Hello Residents,

I hope you are staying comfortable during our hot summer. Please remember that it is important that we drink sufficient amounts of water to keep ourselves hydrated, even if we aren't thirsty. A sign of liquid distress is nausea and/or feeling faint; so, please don't wait until you have symptoms before taking action.

I have formed an ad-hoc committee to look at the parts of the Community Center that were not recently renovated. The intent is to look at ALL areas with the eventual goal of updating the color scheme and any fixtures and furniture that need to be changed. This will be an ongoing project, and I expect it to take many months before any dollars are allocated. But I believe it is a worthwhile goal as many parts of our community center are 10+ years old. While I am on the subject of the Community Center, I want you to know that an open house will be held on Friday, September 17 to commemorate the expansion and renovation of the community center that took place over the last year or so. There will be food, entertainment, and a memorable photo to take with you when you depart. More information will be publicized, but please save the date for what I expect will be a wonderful event. Stay cool and enjoy all the events that Debbie Kent has planned for you.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
You may have noticed that the world is slowly coming back to life. Well, the same is true of Sun City Aliante and its Community Center. Clubs are starting to meet again, fitness classes are back in swing, and events are being planned. Of course, our Lifestyle Director, Debbie Kent, is bursting with pent-up energy that she has been storing up for the last year and a half. This means you will be seeing newly scheduled trips to popular sites like Mt. Charleston the Grand Canyon and even world-famous Oatman, Arizona. Wayne Headrick
Through the summer, I'm sure trips to see Las Vegas Aviators and Las Vegas Aces games will be on tap. Of course, many of us hope to see concerts at The Wynn and Vegas Golden Knights games come up on her list of great stuff in the fall. At the same time, Trish Williamson, Editor, and Publisher of the Breeze is working with The Breeze advertisers to reinvigorate the ever-popular Lunch/Snack 'n' Learn Seminar series. Although The Breeze is published monthly, you realize that the time between when it must be sent to the printer and its arrival in your mailbox is a couple of weeks. During that time, Debbie and Trish don't stop looking for great things for our residents to do. So, how can you keep up with the latest club activities, seminars, special events, and calendar changes? The Sun City Aliante website and weekly eBlasts are designed to keep you as up-to-date as possible. To receive weekly eBlasts, you must have an account on the Sun City Aliante website at www.suncityaliante.org. As all residents (homeowners and renters) are authorized to have an account, all you need to do to view the “password protected” sections of the website and receive weekly eBlasts is to request a website account. There are three basic ways to request an account. The first is to stop by the Community Center and request a “Green Form” from an Associate at the Front Desk or the Customer Service Office, complete that form, and return it to either location.
The Sun City Aliante Board of Directors pictured (l-r) are Mark Pallans, Director; Nancy Prince, Treasurer; Ed Sloman, Vice President; Warren Geller, President; Wayne Headrick, Secretary; Mark Towers, Director and Mark Smith, Director. The Breeze is a monthly publication of Sun City Aliante Community Association, Inc. (SCAL), designed to provide information and news to the members of Sun City Aliante. The second is to use your favorite computer/smartphone browser and go to the Sun City Aliante website at www. suncityaliante.org. On the homepage of the website, click or press the “Register” link at the top right of the website window, complete the requested information, be sure to check “yes” at the bottom if you wish to receive the eBlast. Then click or press the “Continue” button and wait for an email containing instructions for completing the process. The third is perhaps the easiest – members of your Communications Committee will be available at scheduled times in the Grand View Room of the Community Center to help set up your account and show you around the website. I hope everyone has a great rest of the summer and an outstanding fall. See you around the Community Center, R. Wayne Headrick Secretary, Sun City Aliante Board of Directors

COMMUNITY MGR Members of the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors and management attended the Community Association Institute Awards (CAI) Nevada Chapter Gala at Red Rock Resort on July 16, 2021. Each year, CAI honors Board members, community managers and communities in Nevada who have enhanced the lives of the residents of their communities.
EXCITING THINGS ARE HAPPENING
We were proud that Sun City Aliante, along with four other Associations, were nominated for Southern Nevada Outstanding Large Association of the Year for 2020. This was the third Damian Carrasco consecutive year our Association was nominated for this prestigious award (“the CAI Oscar”). The previous two years Sun City Aliante won the award. Board President Warren Geller and I were also nominated, respectively, as Board Member of the Year and Onsite Manager of the Year. Unfortunately, we did not win, but everyone was more than deserving of the award. The contributions of our volunteer Board and Committees and Sun City Aliante staff play a significant role in the outstanding recognitions received by this community. Right now, several Committees are looking for volunteers. The Finance and Lifestyle Committees have an opening for one homeowner. The Patrol and Architectural Review Committees have openings for two homeowners. We are very excited the Sun City Aliante Patrol is back. All interested residents and past patrol volunteers are invited to join the Patrol and get personally involved in observing and reporting to deter potential crime in the community. For more information about the Patrol, please contact Phil Zanello at 702-460-9592 or email ZP9@aol.com. As you know, your Board of Directors is charged with the responsibility of enhancing and improving the community and ensuring funds are used wisely. Once your Board has approved an initiative, you may wonder about the status of it. I wanted to bring you up to date on several projects we have completed or are working on: • • • • • •
Parking Lot – In addition to repairing the cracks in the asphalt and restriping the parking spaces, the asphalt company resurfaced the entire parking lot at their cost. Landscaping – Planted new landscaping in front of the Community Center. Lighting- Installed additional lighting at Widewing Park. Gym – Repaired multiple pieces of gym equipment. Pool - Repaired and replaced all the rollers to the pool doors. Sauna – Repaired the sauna.
• • •
• • • •
Air Conditioning – Completed minor repair work on multiple AC units. Water Heater - Replaced the existing tankless water heater. Investment Funds – Moved our investment funds to FirstService Financial which increased our annual interest amount by approximately $13,000. New Gym Equipment - Working on purchasing a few new pieces of fitness equipment, including a stair climber, rowing machine and an arm curl bench. Vista Room - Working on a proposal for a new sound system for the Vista Room. Lighting- Working on installing lighting to highlight the Veteran's Wall inside the community center.
We are excited that Communications Committee is hosting a New Resident Welcome on Friday, August 20 and Saturday, August 21 in the Vista Room. Since our last event in 2019, so many new residents have moved into our community that we have to hold it on two different days. New residents will receive an invitation by mail and be asked to RSVP to the Front Desk. Immediately following the New Resident Welcome, The Lifestyle Department will host a Club Open House. This is a great chance for new resident to learn firsthand about our amazing Clubs and Special Interest Groups available to residents. We look forward to seeing all of you back enjoying our amazing activities and events. Damian Carrasco Community Manager, Sun City Aliante

LIFESTYLE NEWS Positive Thoughts What a year! As our world has changed, we have adapted and moved forward. We saw how the quarantine impacted the quality of life and it confirmed the power of human interactions positively enriches family, friendships, good health, and happiness. Community Each Sun City Aliante resident has the privilege of living in a community that prides itself in offering a remarkable lifestyle. Community is a powerful word and strong communities foster feelings of kinship and fellowship through shared experiences. Experiences such as being a member of one of our many Chartered Clubs or Special Interest Groups, participating in a wide range of activities, or attending a Lunch ‘n’ Learn to provide a sense of purpose and belonging to something special. Residents look forward to reconnecting with friends and neighbors to enjoy living in an Active Adult (55+) community. Opportunities to Re-Connect

COMMUNITY STANDARDS I always remind new owners/tenants to register at our office, but I do not often thank the ones who do. I want to give a big shout-out to the new residents who have set appointments to meet with Carol Garbarino, Customer Service Coordinator, to register and take their pictures for the Activity Card. This process is not only a requirement, but it is also helpful for us in the management office. First, we enjoy meeting you. Secondly, we believe an informed resident is a great resident. It is important that you allow us to answer your questions and be able to give clarity to verbiage that may be ambiguous in your governing documents or provide information you simply cannot find. Carol is careful to give as much information as needed during the registration process. So, thank you! Thank you for taking the time to visit and get to know us as well. The New Resident Welcome Orientation on August 20 and 21 will be an amazing event. All new residents will receive an invitation by mail. For those of you I have not met yet, I am excited to welcome you in person. Residents will be able to meet Board members, staff, and committee members who make our community such a pleasant and enjoyable place to live. There will be some refreshments served; so, come and join us. If you are planning to install a fence, wall, pool, or spa, we highly recommend you attend our Architectural Review Committee (ARC) sessions to seek guidance or get questions answered before hiring your contractors. If you have questions about the Design Guidelines, please contact me or come to one of our biweekly ARC meetings. More is not always better! Resist the temptation to water everything to death in the heat. Just because a plant “looks dry” does not mean it needs more water. If the soil is watered too often, the plant cannot breathe and cannot take up the water in its soil. Deep, infrequent water and surface mulches keep your shrubs and trees healthy through this stressful time. Through August 31, watering restrictions prohibit landscape irrigation between the hours of 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday watering also is prohibited. Water your landscape early in the morning, before sunrise, to reduce evaporation caused by wind and heat. Our Community Center is bustling with people and activity again, and it is so good to see residents I have not seen in a while. Naturally, our residents would like to bring over guests, and I encourage all of you to take pride in our beautiful Community Center. Please remember to look over the community Rules and Regulations regarding guests; so, there are no surprises. Our goal is to provide great customer service and nurture good, professional relationships. The use of the Common Area facilities is foremost and primarily for the use and enjoyment of residents. We accommodate guests and visitors only when they do not infringe upon the convenience or right of enjoyment of residents. Let us be courteous, respectful, and grateful towards residents and guests. Most importantly, have fun with each other.
Las Vegas has so many new and innovative attractions for you to experience. Let the cooler temperatures begin so that we can take advantage of all that this city offers.
If you have any questions, please contact me at 702-638-5006 assistantmanager@suncityaliante.us.
Enjoy the last days of summer,

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
COUNCILMAN RICHARD CHERCHIO
Dear Residents,
Hello Everyone,
We were pleased to see so many residents attend the Town Hall Meeting and Ice Cream Social. It was a great opportunity to meet your local, state and congressional legislators and ask any questions you had.
Many of you are likely enjoying these long summer days outside with your pets. Although this can be a fun time of the year for you and your furry friends, it is also important to remember that higher temperatures mean higher risks. Here at the City of North Las Vegas, we are very proud of the work we have accomplished in updating our ordinances to better protect the health, welfare, and safety of the animals in our community.
Welcome to our new residents who have joined the Sun City Aliante community since October 2019. The Communications Committee has sent invitations for a New Resident Welcome and Chartered Club & Special Interest Group Open House. If you receive an invitation, please don't forget to RSVP. Thank you for your positive feedback on our Lunch 'n' Learn seminars. This month we will reintroduce Snack 'n' Learns. It is great to see so many of you coming back to enjoy the educational opportunities provided by our advertisers. Please make your reservations in advance; so, presenters have an opportunity to purchase enough meals/snacks for everyone. We thank you for cancelling if something comes up at the last minute and you cannot attend. Our seminars this month include everything from a “Reopening Celebration Lunch” hosted by Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick, to an Ice Cream Social and a Chair Yoga demonstration with Cano Health, to topics related to the security of your home and health and affordable final arrangement options. I look forward to seeing you at the seminars. We have some exciting photos submitted by residents who have unique hobbies – everything from scuba diving and sky diving to kite flying and hiking, to golfing, kayaking and photography. We really appreciate you sharing your cherished memories. Our Resident Spotlight feature this month focuses on Phil Zanello, chairman of the Patrol Committee and the restart of the Sun City Aliante Patrol. Phil is looking for residents who would like to volunteer their time and talents to deter and discourage crime with the community. It is a great way to get involved, help make a difference and make new friends. Please see page 29 for more information.
Our updated ordinances (bit.ly/3hkYveT) include requirements to provide adequate shelter and protection to pets, with penalties for owners who do not comply. Additionally, triple-digit temperatures require owners to provide measures such as misters, air conditioning, and shade structures to allow pets a place to cool off. These are progressive measures that give our Animal Protection Officers additional tools to ensure that animals in the City are receiving proper care from their owners. I believe this will go a long way in ensuring that animals in our community are treated humanely and appropriately. In addition to following our ordinances, please keep your pets safe by following these precautions from the experts at the ASPCA: • • • • • •
This year on August 4 the U.S. Coast Guard, one of the five branches of the U.S. Armed forces, celebrates its 230th birthday. The Coast Guard was created on August 4, 1790, when the first Congress authorized Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton to construct ten vessels, known as “revenue cutters,” to combat smuggling and enforce tariff law. The Coast Guard, as we know it today, was formed in 1915 with the merging of the Revenue Cutter Service and the U.S. Life-Saving Service. Eventually, the Coast Guard became so essential in protecting the United States, that it was moved to the Department of Homeland Security in 2003, to aid the United States efforts against terrorist attacks. We salute all residents who served in the U.S. Coast Guard. August is “Immunization Awareness Month.” Many diseases that once crippled and killed Americans have by and large been eradicated. However, influenza, measles, mumps, chicken pox, hepatitis A and B and shingles are out there. Next month, we will feature a seminar by a local pharmacist to give you updates on immunizations. If you have any suggestions or comments, please contact me at twilliamson@suncityaliante.us or 702-429-1623.

Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water when it is hot or humid outdoors. Know the symptoms of overheating in pets, which can include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor, or even collapse. NEVER leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle even with the air conditioning on. Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool. Not all dogs are good swimmers. Introduce your pets to water gradually, and make sure they wear flotation devices when on boats. Open, unscreened windows pose a real danger to pets, who can fall out of them. Keep all unscreened windows or doors in your home closed, and make sure adjustable screens are tightly secured. Feel free to trim longer hair on your dog but never shave your dog. The layers of a dog's coat protect it from overheating and sunburn. When the temperature is very high, do not let your dog linger on hot asphalt. Being so close to the ground, your pet's body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during these times to a minimum. Food and drinks commonly found at barbecues can be poisonous to pets.
Remember, our pets rely on us to protect them at all times! It is our responsibility and the law! When temperatures hit triple digits, which lately has seemed like every day, pet owners MUST provide a cooling system or misting system if an animal is left outdoors for any amount of extended time. Anyone found or reported to be negligent will be fined and could be charged with a misdemeanor or a gross misdemeanor. Unfortunately, over the Fourth of July holiday, we once again saw a lot of illegal fireworks launched in our neighborhoods. This year alone, it cost all of us taxpayers approximately $1.5 million in hours and resources to try and keep up. Once again, people need to respect their neighbors and only use Safe N Safe Fireworks when celebrating Independence Day.
Enjoy the month and stay safe. Trish Williamson Editor, The Breeze
As always, I am happy to help any of you with matters related to the City of North Las Vegas, specifically Ward 4. Feel free to email me at cherchior@cityofnorthlasvegas.com. Until next time, stay hydrated and be safe, everyone! Richard Cherchio Mayor Pro-Tem

TOWN HALL MEETING & ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Nevada Congressman Steven Horsford hosted a Town Hall Meeting and an Ice Cream Social in the Vista Room at the Community Center on July 1 from 1-3 p.m. He invited Nevada Senator Pat Spearman, Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick and North Las Vegas Councilman Richard Cherchio to participate in the meeting. Congressman Horsford discussed several legislative initiatives to help seniors, including a bill to allow Medicare beneficiaries access to better dental care, a bill to reduce drug prices and stop pharmaceutical companies from hiking costs for life-saving medications and a bill to increase Social Security monthly payments (by increasing the percentage of the beneficiary average indexed monthly earnings used to calculate monthly payments).

IMMUNIZATION AWARENESS MONTH IT'S AUGUST: HAVE YOU HAD YOUR SHOTS?August is “Immunization Awareness Month,” and it's a good time to get up to date on vaccinations for both children and adults. It can take weeks for vaccines to kick in, which is why this is a great time to get vaccinated – BEFORE cold and flu season and BEFORE kids go back to school where
More than 60% of all people hospitalized with seasonal influenza (flu) are over 65, which is why the CDC recommends a flu shot for older Americans. As we get older, it's also important to be protected against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) with a Td or Tdap vaccine. Pneumonia is a leading cause of death among seniors, which is why the CDC recommends the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) for adults over 65 years old. Additionally, they also suggest that seniors talk to their provider about getting extra protection from the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13). If you want to dive deeper, the CDC has a quick self-assessment survey you can take online to determine which vaccines you need.
they are exposed to all kinds of germs. WHAT CAN VACCINES PROTECT YOU FROM?
So talk to your provider to make sure the vaccine works for you, and then get vaccinated to protect yourself and others!
Many diseases that once crippled and killed Americans have by and large been eradicated by modern vaccines. However, influenza, measles, mumps, chicken pox and more grownup diseases like hepatitis A and B and shingles are still out there, and therefore adults need protection as well as children. Not to mention teens and young adults who can benefit from vaccines for human papillomavirus (HPV) and meningitis. WHY SHOULD YOU GET VACCINATED? The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) has published a list of 10 reasons to get vaccinated, and here are a few: • Being up to date on your vaccines is as important to your health as diet and exercise. • Vaccines are safe and will not cause the diseases they are designed to prevent. • Even young healthy people can get sick without vaccines. • Vaccines can be the difference between life and death. • If you get sick, you're endangering your children, grandchildren, parents, and co-workers. Diseases preventable by vaccines cost society upwards of $10 billion a year. The NFID says that the average case of the flu can last up to 15 days, causing five or six missed school or work days. HOW SAFE IS IT? We put children in car seats, we use seatbelts, we wear bicycle helmets, we bundle up when it's cold outside – and getting vaccinated is just another common-sense way to stay healthy and safe. Before a vaccine is released to the public, the FDA conducts rigorous laboratory testing to make sure it is safe and effective before it becomes licensed. Once a vaccine is licensed, the FDA, CDC, National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other federal agencies conduct ongoing follow-up studies to ensure safety. NOT JUST FOR KIDS According to the CDC, one in three people will develop shingles in their lifetime, and the risk increases as you get older. That's why they recommend healthy adults over 50 get the shingles vaccine.

CHARTERED CLUBS ALIANTE CLASSY CHEFS The Aliante Classy Chefs will not start in September due to an abundance of caution regarding COVID-19. There is much anticipation of getting the club up and running in the not-too-distant future safely. Here is a recipe they are sharing that is a great addition to your Grilling meals. BEER BREAD The only Beer Bread Recipe you will ever need! It is all about the beer (of course) and the butter! 3 cups (330g) sifted all-purpose flour 1 (12-ounce) can beer room temperature 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 cup (1 stick, 113g) salted butter cold 2 teaspoons salt (optional) 1-4 tablespoons of granulated sugar (optional) Preheat the oven to 375°F. Prepare a glass loaf pan with butter or panrelease. (If you do not have glass, use a light-colored pan as a dark pan might bake the edges too quickly.) In a bowl add the flour, baking powder, and salt. (add the sugar here if using) The use of sugar is based on the type of beer used and your preferences. When using a lite beer 2 were found to be sweet enough, sometimes just 1 tablespoon. If you prefer a sweeter beer bread, use up to 4 tablespoons. Whisk dry ingredients together. Pour in the beer and stir all ingredients until just combined and there are no dry parts. The batter will be thick. Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan and smooth out if needed. Cut the butter into slices (roughly tablespoon size) and place on top of the raw batter evenly. Bake for 3545 minutes or until the bread is golden brown on top. There should be about 1/2 inch of melted butter bubbling at the bottom. Allow to cool on the counter for about 5 minutes or until all the butter in the bottom of the pan is soaked back up into the bread. When using a lite beer, we found 2 tablespoons will make it sweet enough.

UKULELE STRUMMERS Greetings From the Sun City Aliante Ukulele Strummers! We meet weekly on Sunday afternoons in the Activity Room near the Fitness Center. Two classes are offered and both have room for more strummers: Intro to Ukulele 101: 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. This is the class for people who have never played ukulele or who want to go back to the basic chords. Intermediate Ukulele: 2:30 – 3:30 pm. This class is for intermediate players who have attended ukulele classes here or with another instructor. For new songs the intermediate class is using the FREE song book of 350 songs by our new friend, Petey Mack, whose daily Facebook live Ukulele classes and book saved our sanity during the pandemic. We sent Petey a video of our class playing from his Songbook this week, and he was thrilled! There are many songs in the book which use the basic chords we know, along with some new fairly easy new chords which we will learn. I will use a projector to show the song book in class, but you will want to download it to your computer for home use. Here is the download link to Petey's book: https://peteymack2.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/5/4/135404457/dec_2020.pdf Please feel free to invite your Sun City Aliante friends who are interested in one of the above classes. If you have any questions, please give me a call or drop by the class. We are so happy to be able to play live with you again! Aloha and welcome back to normal! Kevin Smith 916-847-7422

CHARTERED CLUBS VETERANS AUXILIARY
VETS 365
Hello from the Veterans Auxiliary. We hope everyone is enjoying their summer and staying cool.
Happy Summer! As the weather is heating up, so is Vets365 serving our local veterans! Recently we helped a Navy Veteran move to Las Vegas from Los Angeles. He is actively going to job fairs, looking for housing and meeting new people. He seems very happy to be in our area. He will be coming to the September Veterans Club meeting to meet everyone.
The Veteran's Auxiliary is collecting coupons for U.S. military and their families proudly serving overseas. If you are interested in saving coupons, please cut and separate them (food, non-food, and pet). The coupons are good even if they are expired up to six months. We will not meet this month; so, please bring your coupons to the Vista Room on September 21 at 9 a.m., and thereafter on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. The Veterans Auxiliary will auction gift cards in conjunction with the Veterans Clubs Spaghetti Dinner on November 6, 2021. We will sell tickets soon. We are preparing for our upcoming garage sale, which will be a fundraiser for the Veterans Auxiliary. We encourage everyone to participate once we have further details. The Veterans Auxiliary meets every 3rd Tuesday at 9 a.m. in the Vista Room of the Community Center. See you in September. Donna Lawhead, donnavegas10@gmail.com Lynda Towers, Lynda1229@msn.com Co-Chairs, Veterans Auxiliary

Armed Forces Military Veterans and First Responders Appreciation Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 16 at Craig Ranch Park. For more information, please call (702) 321-1075. You can also visit www.NLVEVENTS4MILITARY.ORG The Elected Board and Appointed Board of Sun City Aliante Veterans Club, are meeting this month to pre-set the arrangements for the Spaghetti Dinner to be held on Saturday, November 6 between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. We are starting something new this year. When we send out volunteer sign up lists, we are beginning a Mentorship Program for new volunteers. You will have fun assisting and learning from our worldrenowned chiefs and other volunteers on how to set up for kitchen and food preparations, how to set up serving stations, including serving food, along with volunteering and manning other stations. We encourage anyone who has food experience or is new to the community to come out and meet us and join in all the fun festivities. The Veterans Club of Sun City Aliante continues to wish everyone a wonderful summer. We hope everyone is now having a chance to visit all their family, friends, and loved ones. The Veterans Club is still dark for the month of August. Our next scheduled meeting takes place on September 21 at 6 p.m. in the Vista Room. We are looking forward to seeing everyone return. Sincerely, David Hollander Chair, Veterans Club

JEWISH COMMUNITY HIGH HOLIDAY SERVICES The Sun City Aliante Havarrah is hosting lay Jewish High Holiday Services at the Sun City Aliante Community Center. All are welcome. The scheduled services are: Rosh Hashanah Service and Kiddush Lunch on Tuesday, September 7th, 11 a.m.; Kol Nidre Service on Wednesday, September 15th, 6:30 p.m.; Yo m K i p p u r S e r v i c e , Thursday September 16th, 11 a.m.; and Break-the-Fast Thursday September 16th, 6 p.m. The donation is $25 per person, paid in advance before August 20th. Volunteers are needed to assist in planning, setup, and to read prayers. More specific information will be forthcoming. Rosh Hashanah, means the "head of the year," and is the Jewish New Year. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah, literally "day of shouting/blasting". It is the first of the Jewish High Holy Days, which usually occur in the early autumn. Rosh Hashanah observances include candle lighting in the evenings, festive meals to welcome the sweetness of the year ahead often including challah bread and apples dipped in honey. Prayer services include the sounding of the ram's horn (shofar). Following Rosh Hashanah, the "Ten Days of Repentance" is observed, marking the opportunity to reflect on any sins and transgressions over the past 12 months. Kol Nidre is a declaration chanted in the synagogue before the beginning of the evening service on Yom Kippur, when fasting begins. The New Year represents a fresh start. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. It marks the culmination of the 10 Days of Awe. Its central themes are atonement and repentance. Jewish people traditionally observe this holy day with fasting and intensive prayer, often spending much of the day in synagogue services. Break-the-Fast is the meal eaten at the end of the fast day. It is enjoyed after the sounding of the shofar.
