Community Center Guidelines

SUN CITY ALIANTE COMMUNITY CENTER FULLY REOPENED

We are very excited that over the past few months, we have been able to resume all our normal activities in compliance with state and local mandated guidelines. At this writing, although we have resumed our normal activities, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak has imposed a mandate that requires everyone, whether they are fully vaccinated or not to wear a mask in public indoor places in Clark County and other Nevada counties with a high COVID-19 transmission rate. Based on the Governor's mandate, the following health guidelines with be enforced inside the Community: All residents are required to wear masks inside the Community Center at all times. The only exceptions to the mask rule include the following: * Removing your mask to eat/drink * Using gym equipment * Swimming or participating in an aqua aerobics class * Participating in a Fitness Class * Doing physical exercise such as playing table tennis or dancing * Showering before and after using the pool We will continue to evaluate the situation daily and keep you informed of any changes. These restrictions will remain in place until the State Health Authority Directives advise it is safe and the Board believes it is in the best interest of the community to remove them. Based on the Board of Director's decision to fully reopen the Community Center, we have fully reopened all facilities; and we are bringing back all activities to their regular schedule before COVID19. The Community Center's Hours of Operation will extend one hour in the evening on Monday- Friday. All of the areas inside the Community Center are fully reopened. Residents are no longer required to make reservations in advance to use the Fitness Center, Pool Area or to participate in a Fitness or Pool Class. Residents are still required to make reservations for Lunch 'n' Learn and Snack 'n' Learn seminars and all on-site and oﬀ-site events.

Residents can access all equipment in the Fitness Center and Aerobics Room.

Foods are permitted during scheduled activities only.

•

Registered guests are permitted to use the Community Center facilities and must be accompanied by a resident. Guest registration is $5. All Clubs and Special Interest Groups are invited to resume activities. However, the group leaders must contact Lori Daniels to conﬁrm dates, time, and space. Open Play is permitted, but you must contact the Front Desk 24 hours in advance to request your time and space.

I woke suddenly to the annoying beeping of my fire detectors, which, of course, happened at 2 a.m. After I assured myself there was no fire, I thought the batteries needed replacement but discovered the three fire/CO2 detectors were the original ones put in 16+ years ago. I decided to invest in all-new ones and was surprised that they had not “complained” years ago as they are rated for a seven-year life expectantly.

In any event, I changed each one myself (not so sure that it was a wise choice) and survived the ladder and the height. In retrospect, I would recommend you get a handyman or perhaps Seniors Assisting Seniors (SAS) people who would facilitate you to stay on terra firma. While I'm sharing my frustrations with you, a major complaint I have had for years is that Del Webb didn't give a thought to seniors climbing ladders to change ceiling air filters. This was a poor design on their part. I am still limping along with the same A/C unit that was installed 16 years ago and fear it may quit before much cooler temperatures arrive. If you see me in the Community Center more than usual, you will know I'm waiting for an A/C vendor to give me an estimate for a new one. Well, there you have some scrambled venting on my part. In the grand scheme of things, I guess all of this is small potatoes as our community is in great shape. We are fiscally sound, and residents seem very proud and happy to be living here. This month is a very religious one for my Jewish family and friends, as we celebrate Rosh Hashanah (New Year) followed 10 days later by Yom Kipper (Day of Atonement), when we repent our sins against God. May we all, whatever religion we are, be inscribed in the Book of Life for another year, as we reflect on our blessings and take stock of our relationship with each other. On April 29, 2021, the Nevada Assembly voted to approve AB356 (30-12), a non-residential turf removal proposal introduced by Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) regulators. The regulators believe the new law will save approximately 12 billion gallons of water per day in the Las Vegas Valley. This equates to approximately 11 gallons of water per day for our 2.3 million residents.

Governor Sisolak signed the bill into law on June 4, 2021. This law is the first in the nation to take such drastic measures in recognizing drought conditions. The law says that no water from the Colorado River can be used to irrigate ornamental grass on non-residential properties, effective January 1, 2027. It applies to grass that virtually no one uses in office parks, street medians, and at entrances to housing developments. It EXCLUDES single-family homes, parks (i.e., Widewing Park), and golf courses. The Property and Grounds Committee asked the Board of Directors to authorize the Committee to begin discussions to renovate all existing areas that are not in compliance with AB356. In July, the Board voted unanimously to move forward with the request. One of the main reasons the Committee wanted to make this change right now is to ensure that Sun City Aliante will be able to collect reimbursement from SNWA for the removal of turf. SNWA pays $3 per square foot for the first 10,000 square feet and $1.50 for all thereafter. It is estimated that Sun City Aliante has approximately 12,000 square feet of turf. This translates into $33,000 in funds to help “seed” the project. The impacted areas in the community are the turf area adjacent to the water fountain, the turf area adjacent to the entry monument along Aliante parkway, the turf area at the Vista room/kitchen entrance over to Lanneret Drive and the turf area behind the Vista room looking toward the 9th green. As of the writing of this article, the staff has begun discussions with Gothic Landscaping and Gothic Construction, who employ registered Landscape architects who will prepare construction documents and estimates.

It is the desire of the Property and Grounds Committee to add a WOW factor to both the waterfall area and the front of our new building. Potentially, the Property & Grounds Committee could be reviewing preliminary designs in September with recommendations to the Board in October/November. Once the preliminary design is approved, the landscape architects will complete working drawings for the construction. Spring of 2022 could be a target for the sod removal and construction of the new areas. I want to commend the members of the Property & Grounds Committee for taking the initiative to ensure we are moving forward quickly to bring our community into compliance with the new state law which recognizes the drastic need to preserve our water supply. COMMUNITY MGR KUDOS AND THANK YOU Dear Residents, I was very excited to welcome so many new Sun City Aliante residents, who moved to our vibrant community since our last New Resident Welcome. A two-day event was held on August 20 and 21. Thank you to the Communications and Lifestyle Committees and Debbie Kent and her team for hosting events on two days to a c c o m m o d a t e t h e l a rg e number of new residents.

Our committee volunteers do amazing things to enhance the offerings and options for our community. They play an integral role in making decisions, in coordination with management and the Board of Directors, that directly affect you. Volunteering your time and talents is one of the most powerful ways to make a difference, to help others, and meet like-minded people. Finally, I want to welcome Brian Anthony Rapalo Bueso, a new member of the Maintenance Department, to our team. Have an enjoyable September! Damian Carrasco Community Manager, Sun City Aliante

Residents had an opportunity to meet members of the Homeowners Association (HOA) Board, management, Damian Carrasco and staﬀ as well as fellow residents. They were also introduced to the many resources available, including Community Center amenities, activities, shows, and excursions, and the Sun City Aliante website. Immediately following the New Resident Welcome, we held a Chartered Club and Special Interest Group Open House. Representatives of our amazing 40+ Clubs and Special Interest Groups were located throughout the Community Center ready to welcome new residents and introduce them to the various activities. I look forward to our Community Center Reopening and Expansion & Enclosure Project Completion Celebration on Friday, September 17. I hope you will be able to stop by between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to enjoy the refreshments and entertainment. As of August 16, the Sun City Aliante Patrol has returned and is now fully operational. You will see Patrol volunteers driving through the Sun City Aliante neighborhood to observe and report any hazards or incidents. I am delighted to recognize all the members of the Patrol Committee for their hard work and dedication over many months working together to bring the Board's vision into reality. Congratulations to Patrol Committee Chairman, Phil Zanello, and committee members: David Conner, Sheila Gray, Mark Premselaar, and Dorothy Tucker. Kudos to all of you. Over the past year, Patrol Committee members have worked tirelessly on creating new policies and procedures, and safety protocols to make it possible for them to restart the Patrol with the Board's approval. They also revised the volunteer application and created a new logo for the Patrol vehicle. In addition, Committee members designed new uniforms consisting of a long and shortsleeve polo shirt, a hat, and a windbreaker, complete with the new logo. Dave Connor conducted the initial training during the second week of August. Another training was held on August 27. The training included classroom sessions and driving the Patrol car. For more information on volunteering for Patrol, please see the article on page 17.

Sun City Aliante Board Meeting Summary Please read below for a summary of the August 11, 2021, Board of Directors (BOD) monthly meeting: Unfinished Business: A. The Board approved moving forward with the Grand Re-Opening of the Community Center and Expansion Project Completion Celebration on September 17 and increased the event budget to $8,498. New Business: A. The Board discussed the mask mandate and decided to keep the current guidelines when residents enter the Community Center and for all events inside the Community Center. The only exceptions, when a mask may be temporarily removed, are taking a shower before and after using the pool, inside the pool, during physical exercise (including using gym equipment, fitness classes, table tennis, dancing) or actively eating or drinking. B. Board approved moving forward with the New Resident Welcome as previously scheduled on August 20 and August 21. C. Board approved a renewal contract with ECR for the Membership Card Machine in the amount of $900. D. Board approved a Lifestyle Committee recommendation to establish a new Chartered Club called Hand, Knee & Foot Club. E. Board approved a Lifestyle Committee recommendation to purchase three replacement sewing machines for a total of $587.43. F. Board approved the appointment of Sonja Bankston-Cullen to the Lifestyle Committee. G. Board approved the appointment of Wayne Edgerton to the Property & Grounds Committee. H. Board approved the appointment of Jeffry Bowers to the Patrol Committee.

LIFESTYLE NEWS Dear Residents, Hello September! Summer has ﬂown by, and we are excited to welcome back our residents who have been away for the past few months. Thank You I want to thank the Chartered Clubs and Special Interest Groups for hosting a very successful FAIR at the New Residents Welcome on Friday, August 20, and Saturday, August 21. The Community Center was ﬁlled with enthusiastic group representatives who shared their participation experience and provided informational tables with the new residents. To the Fitness Instructors who were in attendance – thank you for promoting a healthy lifestyle to our residents. According to reservations, there were nearly 150 New Residents who took part in this two-day event. In addition, thank you to all who helped support the New Residents Welcome – Board of Directors, Communication Committee, Presenters, Administration, Maintenance, and the Lifestyle Department. Everyone put their heart and soul into making this a huge success. Great News from the Lifestyle Committee The Board of Directors approved the purchase of three new Brother Sewing Machines and two sets of regulation Corn Hole equipment for all residents to use at the Community Center. Please check in at the Front Desk for assistance with using these two new additions to the many resources available to residents. Hand, Knee, and Foot has been approved as a new Chartered Club. COMMUNITY STANDARDS Dear Residents: Happy September! Welcome new residents, and I hope you are settling into our community. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you about watering schedules and restrictions. According to the North Las Vegas Utilities Department, the watering schedule for summer ended August 31. From September to October the schedule changes. Please remember to adjust all your irrigation clocks according to the days permitted in your assigned watering group. For details, visit www.northlasvegas.com and click on Utilities. Water restrictions • Sprinkler watering on Sundays is prohibited. • Watering with a handheld hose and supervised testing of your irrigation system are allowed any time. • Watering new or reseeded landscapes is permitted daily for up to 30 days once per calendar year. Call (702) 633-1484 before the planting takes place; so, the Utilities Department can make note on your water account. • Watering restrictions also apply to drip irrigation. While you may water any day of the week, watering may not exceed the maximum number of days per week allowed by the restrictions. Experts agree that running drip irrigation less frequently is much better for plants than daily watering. • Watering on days other than assigned watering days during restricted hours or other ways of wasting water, such as a leak on your property or unnecessary use, are considered water waste and may result in a fine. A first violation can be up to $320. Please visit the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) website at http://www.snwa.com to learn more about water conservation. To report water waste, please contact the Water Conservation hotline at (702) 633-1216. Solar panels If you plan to add solar panels to improve energy efficiency in your home, please take note of these guidelines. You must install an exterior solar panel from the roof down on the utility side of your home and paint it to match the base color of your home to maintain the aesthetics of the community. Local solar installation companies are willing to paint the conduits for free. In addition, consider installing deterrents, such as bird mesh, plastic predators, or roof spikes, to protect your solar panels and roof from birds. Birds are attracted to solar panels for climate protection and nesting, and they can potentially cause thousand of dollars in damage. If you want to make any improvements to the outside of your home or property, you are required to submit a Home Improvement Application detailing your project to the Architectural Review Committee (ARC), which is handled through the Compliance/Customer Service Office. The ARC Review meetings are held every two weeks on Thursdays to review homeowner applications. (Homeowners are invited to these meetings to ask questions about projects.) ARC Applications and Design Guidelines are available on the main page of the Sun City Aliante website at www.suncityaliante.org. Autumn is just around the corner. We can look forward to cooler days ahead and the delicious smells of pumpkin pie and hot apple cider.

I hope everyone has been doing well since my last article. I want to start by sharing some exciting news! My nonproﬁt's annual Armed Forces, Military Veterans & First Responders Appreciation Day will be held on Saturday, October 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Craig Ranch Regional Park, 628 W. Craig Road (please note, the entrance will be located at the corner of Commerce Street and Craig Road).

I also want to extend my appreciation to everyone, who sends in monthly articles and photos for the Chartered Clubs and Special Interest Groups section. This truly helps to keep residents in the know on the latest happenings in your world. It is encouraging to see so many of you attending our Lunch 'n' Learn and Snack 'n' Learn seminars. This month we have informative presentations, including the future of Medicare, why immunizations are important, an urgent care mobile service called Dispatch Health that brings back the “house call,” as well as seminars on how to outsmart scammers, and ways to burglar-proof your home, to name a few. The Communications Committee will host a website training seminar on Monday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to noon. Committee members will help you familiarize yourself with this important resource. Please bring your computer device, such as a laptop or iPad you use to access the website, if possible. If you have not logged into the Sun City Aliante website, please came early; so, we can set you up before the seminar begins. I am very pleased to invite all residents to attend our FREE Advertisers Meet 'n' Greet, hosted by the Communications Committee, on Thursday, October 14, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Vista Room. Look forward to lots of FREE door prizes, Give-a-Ways, and a continental breakfast hosted by MountainView Hospital and the ER at Aliante. This is a great opportunity to meet Breeze advertisers on an informal basis. You will have the chance to speak directly with representatives about their products and services. The battleship Missouri was chosen for the formal surrender ceremony, as she was named after President Truman's home state. This year Labor Day is celebrated on September 6. The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on September 5,1882 and was started by the Central Labor Union in New York City. On June 28,1894, the U.S. Congress voted it as a national holiday. On September 16, 1620, a total of 102 men, women and children set sail on the Mayflower from Plymouth, England bound for a settlement in Virginia. They were the first of millions of people to come to America in search of freedom and the dream and promises of a new world. Beginning September 16,17 or 18 through October 3, the Oktoberfest is held in Munich, Bavaria. Each year, the event is opened as the mayor of Munich taps a keg of beer. Millions of people from all over the world attend this event. Octoberfest celebrations are held all over the world during this time.

I am happy to say our entertainment lineup this year is truly second to none. We will have Freddie B, Pin-Ups on Tour, Thrillbilly Deluxe, and first-rate singer Frank Pizzaro! Pizzaro was one of the many brave firefighters in Manhattan who responded to the tragic 9/11 call. He has also performed with many well-known groups, such as The Platters, the Las Vegas Youth Jazz Orchestra, and with your own Sy Neilson's bluegrass band. Additionally, we'll have free food prepared by John Mulls Meats for all our veterans, military, first responders, and their families. Food will also be available for purchase by various other eateries on-site. I'm also excited to announce that we'll have the Las Vegas Cruisin' Association Classic Car Show for all to enjoy and much more! Recently, one of the questions I have been asked the most is how we bring businesses to North Las Vegas. Many times, businesses have their own research models that they use to gauge whether our city is a good fit. Lately, many great and well-known businesses have seen the success of our wonderful city and are making plans to move here. That includes some great restaurants! Pretty soon, we'll have businesses moving to the area of Bruce Street and Craig Road, which include BJ's Brewhouse, Chili's, Olive Garden, Panera Bread, and Starbucks, just to name a few. In other news, we will continue to move forward with DR Horton on the Villages of Tule Springs adjacent to Sun City on the east side. As I previously mentioned, when we get to the point that we have some rendering designs, we will have a Lunch & Learn in the Vista Room with the developer and his representative present to answer any questions. I truly believe you will be pleased with what is planned to complement our community. Our residents often ask me about how the growth of the valley impacts our water supply; so, I will try to have a representative from the Southern Nevada Water Authority attend as well. I'm also aware of some of the increased traffic we're seeing and, like some of you, I have heard the loud, modified mufflers some people have on their vehicles. I want you all to know that I am diligently working with staff on addressing these concerns. Lastly, the Clark County School District will build a Career Technical Academy (CTA) between Revere Street and Goldfield Street along Dorrell Lane on half of the last of their 40-acres allocated to them many years ago by the BLM. More on this will be discussed soon. In the meantime, I am honored to have the privilege to write a monthly article in the Breeze Magazine, which I consider one of the best community publications by one of the best communities anywhere in the valley. I want to wish everyone a safe and happy upcoming Labor Day! I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to cooler days to come. Make no mistake, Windows 11 will not be available for most of us until early-tomid 2022. Even then, it will only be offered through the automatic Windows Update to newer computers. No website will ever offer it to you. No email will ever offer it to you. If you are offered Windows 11 this year, it is most certainly not Windows 11 and likely contains malware that will damage your files. Don't fall for it! Take the garage door opener with you every time the vehicle is parked, including when shopping, doing business and at home parked in the driveway. 6. Do not hang them on a hook in the garage. 8. The door from your garage into your house should be locked. 9. If you park on the street, a thief could potentially use a tow truck to haul your vehicle away. To avoid this, turn your wheels toward the curb and set the parking brake. This makes it diﬃcult for a thief to tow your vehicle away.

RELATIVES SOMETIMES MAKE YOU VERY PROUD By Trish Williamson

You probably have a favorite aunt, uncle, cousin, or distant relative who you love to talk about, because you are proud of them and their accomplishments. No doubt, they are a source of great stories. And, we all love stories, especially about fun people.

“When “Buddies” was a pilot show, my cousin said, 'Tom Hanks was so broke that he asked Miller to lend him $5,000 for rent. He doubled the amount, but as soon as Hanks received his ﬁrst paycheck, he paid the money back. He was so grateful that when he would see me, he would drop to his knees and say, 'Thank you so much for helping me with my career,'” added Judy. “Unfortunately, my cousin, Tom, died last year, but he received a tribute for his work during the Academy Awards program.”

Have you ever researched your family tree? Well, Sun City Aliante resident Judy Dvorkin did and discovered some interesting facts about her grandmother, Sarah Tartakovsky. According to Judy, at age 18, Sarah left her home in Russia to sail from Germany to the United States on the ocean liner, the Hanover, in Judy Dvokin (l) is pictured with her 1912. Her ship sailed in the daughter, Kacia (r) and granddaughter, Lindsee, (c) at her ﬁrst Packer football North Atlantic and was passed game at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, by the RMS Titanic as it raced WI. to New York. When the ship's captain was informed about the distress of the Titanic, he decided not to rescue passengers because of the danger of icebergs. When Sarah debarked from the Hanover in Texas, she was met by a cousin, and they traveled to Iowa. Sarah eventually married Jacob Miller, who had two children from a previous marriage, Eddie and Cele. Sarah and Jacob also had four children of their own. Judy's father, Marvin, was their oldest child . Judy's uncle, Ed Miller, became an icon in the Dry-Cleaning Industry. In 1934, he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to open a family-owned called “Spic and Span.” He weathered the Great Depression, and by 1941, he had become the guru of dry-cleaning in Milwaukee with national name recognition. By the end of the century, the company was the largest dry cleaner in Wisconsin with 31 stores in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties and her relatives owned stores in Madison. “Uncle Eddie was the inventor of the “Steaming Susie,” a metal tailor's dummy with vents through which spewing steam would smooth out wrinkles in women's dresses from inside, avoiding seam impressions and shine. Ed sold his patent to a manufacturer, and today, the 'Steaming Susie' is used worldwide,” Judy said. And Judy's stories continue to get better. Next, she talked about her cousin, Tom Miller, one of Eddie's two sons. “I think Tom got interested in studying TV and ﬁlm, because his father sponsored a television show called “Play Ball,” which showcased the Milwaukee Braves,” explained Judy. “After college, Tom moved to Hollywood and became the executive producer of well-known television shows such as 'Happy Days,' 'Laverne & Shirley,' 'Full House,' 'Mork & Mindy,' and 'The Odd Couple.' Also, Tom Hanks got his break on 'Bosom Buddies,' another television show that Tom produced,” she continued.

“Uncle Eddie's other son, Robert, who was a lawyer, joined his father in the early 1970s after working six years as a banker. He was largely responsible for the growth of the company's industrial business,” noted Judy. Not only does Judy have colorful relatives, but she has also enjoyed a very interesting life. She was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin in 1971, she moved to California to become independent. She worked for Union Bank and California Federal Savings. After meeting and marrying her husband, Larry, in a bowling league, she went to work for Exxon in serval jobs and ﬁnally in Human Resources, where she was responsible for writing/editing the employee newsletter and setting up Fire and Water Safety programs. She retired in 2000 when Exxon merged with Mobile Oil. Judy and her daughter, Kacia, moved to Las Vegas in 2004. Judy went to work for Wynn Las Vegas as a secretary, and later, as executive secretary for the Chief of Human Resources until she retired in 2007. Kacia managed two retail stores at Wynn Las Vegas. Judy is truly a Green Bay Packer fan and is very passionate about her team. She also loves to play cards and go bowling. Her high game is 287 and her high scratch series is 754. 'My biggest challenge in life was raising two children, 5-year-old Kacia and 3-year-old Alex, as a single parent after my husband passed away in 1984. I am very fortunate because I have great relationships with both my children who have had successful careers. Alex works for Anthem Blue Cross and Kacia is employed with Palm Mortuary helping to make funeral arrangements. EUCHRE CLUB Welcome Back! The Euchre Club is now playing cards. Members meet in the Activity Room every Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. Members welcome all past and new players. SUN CITY ALIANTE SONGSTERS The Songsters start rehearsing for their holiday concert on September 2 in the Vista Room. The group has 45 choir members and 5 musicians. Everyone is looking forward to seeing one another again and learning the music for their concert. The Songsters rehearse every Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Vista Room. TECHNOLOGY CLUB The Technology Club m e t o n T h u r s d a y, August 5 to discuss ways to “Cut the Cable Cord and save $$$.” Over 40 residents attended this discussion. Rod Stark presented information on the growing use of streaming services to replace cable. To use streaming services, sufficient wi-fi bandwidth and an Amazon Firestick/Roku box are needed. Residents can choose from a large selection of streaming services offering TV, movies, sports, and on demand programming (many free services). Popular streaming packages were highlighted, and questions were answered. The next topic will be “Selecting a PC.” Attendees will learn about how to select a PC among the many choices out there. • • •

Fall is just around the corner, and we are very excited that we will meet again this month at 6 p.m. in the Vista Room of the Sun City Aliante Community on September 21. I hope everyone has enjoyed their summer and had a chance to visit with all their family and friends.

The Sun City Aliante Ukulele Strummers are still meeting weekly on Sunday afternoons in the Activities Room next to the gym. Two classes are oﬀered and both classes have room for more strummers: Intro to Ukulele 101: 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. This is the class for people who have never played ukulele or who want to go back to the basic chords. Intermediate Ukulele: 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. This class is for intermediate players who have attended ukulele classes here or from another instructor. VETERANS AUXILIARY Hello from the Veterans Auxiliary. Happy Labor Day! We hope everyone enjoyed their summer and stayed cool and healthy during the hot and humid weather. The Veterans Auxiliary is collecting coupons for U.S. Military and their families proudly serving overseas. If you are interested in saving coupons, please cut and separate them (food, non-food, and pet). The coupons are good even if they are expired up to six months. JEWISH COMMUNITY HIGH HOLIDAY SERVICES The Sun City Aliante Havarrah is hosting lay Jewish High Holiday Services at the Sun City Aliante Community Center. All are welcome. The scheduled services are Rosh Hashanah Service and Kiddush Lunch on Tuesday, September 7, 11 a.m.; Kol Nidre Service on Wednesday, September 15, 6:30 p.m. Yom Kippur Service, Thursday September 16, 11 a.m.; and Break-the-Fast Thursday September 16, 6 p.m. Volunteers are needed to assist in planning, setup, and to read prayers. Rosh Hashanah, means the "head of the year," and is the Jewish New Year. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah, literally "day of shouting/blasting". It is the ﬁrst of the Jewish High Holy Days, which usually occur in the early autumn. Rosh Hashanah observances include candle lighting in the evenings, festive meals to welcome the sweetness of the year ahead often including challah bread and apples dipped in honey. Prayer services include the sounding of the ram's horn (shofar). Following Rosh Hashanah, the “Ten Days of Repentance” is observed, marking the opportunity to reﬂect on any sins and transgressions over the past 12 months. Kol Nidre is a declaration chanted in the synagogue before the beginning of the evening service on Yom Kippur, when fasting begins. The New Year represents a fresh start. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. It marks the culmination of the 10 Days of Awe. Its central themes are atonement and repentance. Jewish people traditionally observe this holy day with fasting and intensive prayer, often spending much of the day in synagogue services. Break-the-Fast is the meal eaten at the end of the fast day.
