MOVIES - FLIGHTS TO THE USA This month’s featured films with reviews by Irish Times journalist

Tony Clayton-Lea G R A V I T Y

PG-13, (91 mins), Drama Following a mid-orbit disaster that wrecks their shuttle craft, spacewalking astronauts Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) try to figure out how they’re going to get back to Earth – despite the fact that they are adrift above the atmosphere with oxygen supplies running scarily low and with no communications system. Director Alfonso Cuaron achieves the near-impossible task of making a leisurely lost-in-space movie one of the most exciting, tense, believable and often intimate cinematic experiences of recent times. And kudos to Bullock and Clooney (Oscar contenders, surely?) for dimming their Hollywood star wattage in order to deliver grounded, personal and totally poignant performances.

R, (111 mins) Action

PG13, (100 mins) Comedy

Taken in under a Witness Protection Programme, the notorious Mafia-connected Manzoni clan relocates from the urban noise of America to the rustic tranquility of a tiny village in Normandy, France.

Four 60-something men who have been friends since their New York school days reunite for a weekend in Las Vegas when the last remaining bachelor of the group reveals his plans to marry. It might be no harm to imagine The Hangover with a pacemaker – Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline and Robert De Niro embark on a last-gasp journey of bonding, laughs, truths and apologies.

There’s one problem, however – old gangster habits of the renamed Blake family are difficult to shake and, even though the FBI is nearby, before they know what has happened, they come under the scrutiny of the local authorities. Such a comic premise is underscored by intuitively amusing performances from the likes of Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer.

MOVIES - FLIGHTS FROM THE USA This month’s featured films with reviews by Irish Times journalist

Tony Clayton-Lea

R, (181 mins) Drama One of the primary motivations for seeing this Ridley Scott drama/crime movie (apart, of course, from the fact that Scott’s movies always deliver good value) is that it hosts the first ever original screenplay by acclaimed American writer Cormac McCarthy (the work of whom is no stranger to Hollywood). Factor in a cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem, and you’ve got a cinematic concoction that sizzles via a script that luxuriates in its use of the English language and by an ensemble cast that is clearly eager to engage with the dialogue.

A L L I S LO S T PG-13, (106 mins) Drama Like Gravity, director J. C. Chandor’s film is a story of survival against the odds in a harsh and unforgiving environment. All Is Lost is also a slice of pure cinema in that it features one actor (Robert Redford), virtually no dialogue, and sequence after sequence of breathtaking up-close and personal cinematography. The storyline is deceptively simple: an unnamed sailor on a solo cruise discovers that the hull of his boat has been perforated, and so begins a struggle to stay afloat – and alive.

5

PG, (110 mins) Action The Percy Jackson series, which got off to a very good start with 2010’s Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief comes back with this second exciting installment ‘Sea of Monsters’. Nominal hero Percy (Logan Lerman), son of Greek sea god, Poseidon, is tasked to find the famed Golden Fleece in order to prevent the unleashing of the power of the scary Titan Krones. Prepare for action set pieces and special effects coming your way!

TV HIGHLIGHTS

HBO has become synonymous with award winning television, and with a prime time spot and a pilot directed by Martin Scorsese, Boardwalk Empire began to cause a stir in Tinsletown before it even aired. The decadent style and seedy underbelly of the 1920s, a world of prohibition under the thumb of t he enigmatic but corrupt ‘Nucky’, played by Steve Buscemi, and barrels upon barrels of bootleg liquor - Welcome to the Jazz Age, Atlantic City Style. We follow Nucky into his world of deception and political ventriloquism, and become immersed in an era where, as the tagline goes, ‘alcohol was outlawed and outlaws be became kings”. Of course, the first season of Boardwalk Empire lived up to the hype and the collective cast and crew raked in an outstanding 18 Primetime Emmy Award Nominations, as well as being named by the American Film Institute as one of the best television programmes of the year. The show has returned for a total of four critically acclaimed seasons, and is set to return to a television screen near you in 2014 for its final season.

The short story is that Game of Thrones is a fantasy series about betrayal, familial love and the quest for power. The long version includes dragons, insane Kings and equally raving Queens, kidnapping, treason and about as much bloodshed and warfare as you can cram into an hour long show; and all of this before you get beyond the elusive “Wall”, where the mysterious “Walkers” wreak havoc and put the fear of death and suffering into even the most hardened of viewer. The Third Series of the show, based on the first half of George R.R.Martin’s fantasy novel “A Storm of Swords” and boasting an impressive budget of $50million, contains one of the most memorable and shocking scenes of the entire show and sees the Lanisters, Starks and Targaryens continue in their quest for the Iron Throne at King’s Landing.

Watch out for the brand new HBO comedy, Hello Ladies. Starring comedy genius and Golden Globe winner Stephen Merchant, the show follows Stuart, a gawky, British, 6’ 7” web designer as he searches for excitement and romance in Los Angeles. Half as charming and twice as desperate as he thinks he is, he’s obsessed with infiltrating the glamorous world of beautiful people.

GRAND DESIGNS Presenter Kevin McCloud follows some of Britain's most ambitious self-building projects, as intrepid individuals attempt to design and construct the home of their dreams.

Aptly named, this is the fourth studio album from R&B Queen Beyoncé. This album is a step in a new direction for Beyoncé, released in 2011 after a career hiatus. The pop-star decided to focus on a rhythm and blues sound for this album. This album also marks a departure from her professional ties with her father, signifying her new found independence and confidence as a solo artist. One thing that hasn’t changed is Beyoncé’s stunning vocal ability which she showcases on songs such as ‘Love on Top’, ‘Best Thing I Never Had’ and dance anthem ‘Run the World (Girls)’.
