Go to www.facebook.com/mackayairport and ‘Like’ us for all the latest news, special offers and exciting competitions. In March a thrilled Angela Johnson was the lucky winner in our first big Facebook competition. She won a trip to The Ultimate Rock Band Weekend featuring all time rock favourites KISS. Angela flew to Mackay courtesy of Tiger Airways Australia on their new direct service from Sydney. (Check out www.tigerairways.com or their new phone App for more info on this and their direct Melbourne service too!) Angela enjoyed accommodation in the beautifully appointed Lanai Riverside Apartments Mackay. This fabulous prize package was also supported by Mackay Tourism and the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre. The concert was a great event for Mackay and Mackay Airport is really proud to be the naming rights sponsor of another fantastic event, the Mackay Airport Beach Horse Racing Festival. Be sure to mark Thursday 15 – Sunday 18 August in your diary and enjoy the great line up of supporting events such as charity golf, food, wine and plenty of lively entertainment that will culminate in the signature event, the beach horse races, on Sunday 18 August. This unique festival promises to be packed with fun for all. Did you get your entry into our Quad Bike competition last month? All you had to do was spend more than $10 at an airport store. That’s so easy with the great range of magazines, books and gift ideas at Relay newsagency, or the delicious offerings available at Delimarche and Aromas cafes within the Departure Lounge and the landside Lavazza café and of course the great range of drinks at the popular Barra Bar. Watch out for more of these easy to enter competitions with fantastic prizes! We have two more bikes to give away throughout the year thanks to our partners at Redline Motorsports for their support and supplying the bikes. Make sure you speak to Darren at Redline to get a great deal... tell em I sent you!! More exciting news is the excellent new coach connections direct from Mackay Airport through to the Whitsundays. Ocean Breezes departs the airport 2:00pm every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, while Whitsundays 2 Everywhere depart at 12:30pm Tuesday & Thursday, 11:00am Wednesday and 11:45am Fridays. We’re also working to get you better coach connections to key Bowen Basin locations. If you are driving yourself to and from Mackay Airport there’s plenty of convenient car parking options from the fully sealed long term car park where you can stay for just $6:50 per day for stays of 30 days or more, or choose the covered car park for just $9:00 per day for 30 days or more. Of course the short term car park is ideal for shorter trips or to meet or farewell passengers with ten minutes free in the carpark. For other transport options the leading hire car companies are conveniently located in the Mackay Airport terminal or taxis are available from the rank along the front of the terminal. The Hangover Part III reunites Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha as Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug. Also returning to the ensemble are Ken Jeong as Mr Chow, Heather Graham as Jade, and Jeffrey Tambor as Alan’s father, Sid. Joining the starring cast is John Goodman.

Roadshow Films presents The Great Gatsby, a film that follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and skyrocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin Daisy and her philandering, blue-blooded husband Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness to the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy.

Principal skater Cecilia Bierich of Sweden, but better know to the crowds as Peter Pans faithful sidekick Tinkerbell, had a chat to Inflight Publishing about why she loves to skate in Disney on Ice. Following in her brother and sister’s footsteps, Cecilia laced up her first pair of skates at age four and quickly took to the sport. She has now been skating with Disney on Ice for three years and loves every moment of it. “Growing up I loved all the Disney movies and I would watch them over and over again,” Cecilia said. “I´ve always loved the movie Beauty and The

Beast but I think I loved the characters Ariel and Jasmine a little more, mostly because of their outfits. “In this show I am actually portraying the role of the little pixie fairy, Tinkerbell, but I think she sees herself as a princess too so it´s a lot of fun. “To learn the role I studied videos and practiced the characteristic movements and attitude of Tinkerbell.” Cecilia currently tours with Disney On Ice presents Princesses & Heroes and has travelled around Europe, South America and the U.S. with the production, leaving audiences with lasting memories. Join Ariel as she yearns to explore the

Q. Your new album Heartthrob has a bit of a different sound, what was the inspiration behind this album? A. A lot of our previous albums have been a bit self-loathing, full of breakup songs and they played a big part in capturing our coming of age. We were younger when we did these albums, now being in our early 30’s we process things differently so our songs are

anadian singer-songwriters Tegan And Sara returned to Australia this April and May for a run of headline dates, alongside the Groovin’ The Moo festival. When the identical twins first came to our attention with their canny pop smarts about 14 years ago, they were a brash young indie outfit. Oh how things have changed. These days Tegan And Sara are well and truly entrenched in the big leagues, having sold nearly a million career albums and having shared stages around the world with bands like The Killers and Neil Young. Their music has grown organically to the point where – while still adored by their underground early adopters – they’ve gained a whole new following in the pop realm, their timeless and heartfelt music connecting with people of all ages, scenes and demographics. Q. You have played countless shows around the world how many times have you been to Australia to perform? A. I think we have been to Australia close to 10 times now.

even time world bodybuilding champion, international movie star, successful businessman, property investor, philanthropist, environmentalist and the 38th Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger will hit Australian shores in June. Schwarzenegger, who was last in Australia in 1980 when he shocked the bodybuilding world to come out of retirement and win his then record breaking 7th Mr Olympia title at the Sydney Opera House, will be the headline speaker at Jamie McIntyre’s 21st Century Financial Education Summits in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne on June 12,13, and 14 respectively. These Summits have previously hosted Sir Richard Branson (2011) and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's sister Randi Zuckerberg (2012). 21st Century's Jamie McIntyre said he was proud

INFLIGHT CHATS TO ARNIE ABOUT SUCCESS: During his only media conference Inflight Publishing was selected to submit a question to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Here’s what we asked.
to be hosting Arnold Schwarzenegger. “The 21st Century Financial Education Summit features world renowned speakers, authors, trainers and coaches,” Jamie said. “The sole purpose of the Summit is to empower attendees to accelerate their life or business to the next level and to live the life of their dreams. “Arnold is one of the world's most successful men; a genuine high achiever reaching the top in four different spheres bodybuilding, business, acting and politics. He is remarkable. “Arnold embodies everything that the Financial Education Summit is all about. “He is motivated, inspirational, an achiever against all odds. How incredible that a young man from a small village in Austria could by the age of 21 have moved to Los Angeles and been crowned Mr Universe; and within five years become the greatest bodybuilder of all time; and within 10 years a millionaire from business; and within 20 years the world’s biggest movie star; and then 36 years later elected Governor of California, the seventh largest economy in the world.” With a career spanning 46 years and reaching the higher echelons in sport, film and politics, Governor Schwarzenegger was the youngest person ever to win the Mr Universe title before becoming the world’s most recognisable all American action hero in films that include Last Action Hero, True Lies, End Of Days and the hugely popular Terminator trilogy. His movies have grossed more than$3 billion. Schwarzenegger himself said he was really excited about visiting Australia in June. ”Australia is one of my favourite countries in the world and the people there are always so friendly and welcoming,” he said. “Sydney will always be special for me as it’s the city that I won the title of Mr Olympia
Q. Inflight Publishing: IF YOU HAVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE ON SUCCESS WHAT WOULD IT BE?
for the final time.” After accomplishing numerous feats and being one of California’s most effective marketing tools, Schwarzenegger left office in 2011 and co-founded the R20 Regions of Climate Action, a global nonprofit dedicated to helping subnational governments develop, implement, and communicate the importance of low-carbon and climate resilient projects as well as their economic benefits. In December 2012 he was recognised as a 2012 Global Advocate by the United Nations Correspondents Association for his work with the organisation. On a totally different level, Schwarzenegger released his long-awaited autobiography, Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story in 2012 and released his recent film The Last Stand in January this year. To watch Arnie speak alongside other well-known inspirational figures such as boxing legend Danny Green, prosperity activist Pat Mesiti, ex NBA champion, speaker, mentor and visionary Eric Bailey, founder and CEO of Financial Freedom Institute Nik Halik and founder of over 12 different companies Jamie McIntyre himself, visit www.fes2013.com.au n
A. Arnold Schwarzenegger: You have to have a vision of where you want to go and what you want to do. You could have the best ship or the best plane in the world but if it takes off and doesn’t know where its going, it’s not going to end up anywhere. So what I always say is that the most important thing is to get in touch with what you want to accomplish and set high goals and just go for it. And always have this vision in front of you. Because the key thing is if you struggle or need to overcome obstacles you ask yourself the question ‘why am I doing this?’ When you have the vision in front of you it makes it easier because you know why you are doing it. I have never questioned myself about why I am doing this, because I always saw in front of me standing on the pedestal, receiving the big trophy, winning the Mr Universe. And because of that I was always looking forward to the next squat, the next hundred push-ups, the next hundred sit-ups. I was never thinking ‘oh my god I have to go to the gym’, I looked forward to going because I knew it would get me one step closer to turning my vision into reality. So for me, envisioning your goal is the most important thing in becoming successful. Your editor Lahnee will be traveling to Melbourne to meet Arnie and attend the 21st Century Financial Summit in June. Stay tuned for photos and check out the web conference with Arnold on our YouTube channel www.youtube.com/user/InflightPublishing.

I highly recommend checking out the BirdCage next time you are in Brisbane and want to get out of the city and into some delicious new foods. Visit www.birdcage.com.au for more information. n

hree months ago in the antique precinct of Woolloongabba, Brisbane, a little bird flew in to town and set up nest on Logan Rd. BirdCage, a refreshing restaurant serving Pan Asian cuisine with a modern Australian fusion, is the newest addition to the strip of elegant eating options in this popular, destination dining spot. My husband and I visited on a Wednesday night for a late dinner and were greeted with warm hospitality by owner Darryl Marsden who opened shop after more than 15 years spent living and working in Asia. With a background as a chef, Darryl wanted to bring something new to the plate and create a restaurant that served the types of foods he loved to cook, and eat. We started the night at the bar, adorned in parlour like red lights, and enjoyed a cocktail – for me it was an Asian inspired Red Lotus with lychee and passionfruit. The ambience was delightful – set in an old Good Year building, BirdCage boasts vintage décor and antique styling set on a backdrop of old brick with low hanging lights, floorboards and a mixture of dark wood furniture and modern black and white striped booths. The unique styling contrasts well with the modern plating of foods fused with Asia tradition. To throw another element into the mix, BirdCage has an underground function area that resembles a room from an old castle; browned brick walls, soft lighting – a truly different space with a very vintage feel. Our seat for the night was in one of the modern booths by the restaurant’s entrance. It was spacious, ambient and quiet so we had plenty of opportunity for conversation over a glass or two of wine. With a good sized menu offering a bit of everything, it was difficult to choose what to eat. But we managed. BirdCage is the perfect place to try something a little different from what you might usually order. For me this meant an entrée of oxtail braised in star anise and lemongrass, with Chinese green onion pancakes and chili jam. I had never ordered oxtail before but I was glad I did. The rich meat melted in my mouth, and combined with the chili jam and pancake, the flavours were huge. My husband opted for a lighter entrée of king prawns and chicken rolled in rice paper with glass noodles, Vietnamese mint and coriander dipping sauce. For main I ate the crispy skinned free range chicken with scallion and ginger sauce on baby bok choy, a smaller meal but full of flavour. Pablo had the house special, whole gold band snapper, seasoned in BirdCage spices, fried and served with Asian slaw, mint, sesame oil and lime soy. He ate every last morsel of the delicate fish flesh. Darryl informed us later that this is a dish people call and book in advance as the restaurant only orders six per day to keep it as fresh as possible. For desert, another house special and possibly the best banana fritters

ou would be forgiven for thinking you had in fact left Brisbane and stepped into a whole new world of lavish luxury when you enter the Emporium Precinct. Perhaps that’s the point, to make you feel like you are in your own little slice of designer heaven. When my husband and I arrived at the Emporium Hotel and pulled up alongside a very well dressed valet, that feeling of royalty swept over us and I knew it was going to be a good 24 hours. The Emporium precinct and Emporium Hotel is located on Ann St in Fortitude Valley, only a 20 minute drive from the Brisbane Airport. Having won a host of awards and recently winning the title of Best Luxury Accommodation in Australia at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, you only need to step foot into the vibrant reception area to see why. Emporium Hotel is is one of Brisbane’s true luxury boutique hotels and is renowned for its exquisite design, beautiful detailing and personalised service. From the moment you step through the intricately designed doors you are surrounded by sumptuous elegance. Red walls with silver finishing’s and zebra print armchairs adorn the reception area and the staff are the friendliest I’ve come across in a long time. Upon checking in we were escorted by the concierge to our King Spa Suite on the top floor, right next to the rooftop lap pool, gym and sauna. It was bliss! Each of the 102 luxurious studio suites are custom designed and individually finished. And the finer details, such as Emporium embroidered pool towels, Molton Brown bathing therapies from England, Emporium bathrobes with matching slippers, 'Sip
& Crave' Personal Bar and Exquisite Sleeps Pillow menu offering a variety of pillow options, are not forgotten. After admiring the room for a while we were off to shop. The precinct offers designer shopping at its best and we had a date with Jean Brown, one of Australia's leading multi-brand fashion retailers. We were greeted with top notch customer service and a glass of French champagne to sip while we browsed the newest fashion trends straight off the catwalk. Then it was on to a few more boutique stores, Emporium caters for the ladies and the men, and there are so many to see. We got in as much boutique browsing as we could before lunch at Mecca Bah, a summery Turkish restaurant with a delicious lunch special. And to top off a day of luxury what could be better than winding down with a massage. Ella Bache, still in the same glorious precinct, offers the latest in face, body, hand and foot care, waxing, IPL, spray tanning and tinting. Pablo and I opted for a half hour destress massage, and it was heavenly! Perfect for people like us with a busy lifestyle, or frequent travellers needing to literally ‘destress’. Finding the energy to drag myself back across the complex to the hotel was a challenge. But the allure of an in room spa bath followed by pre dinner drinks at one of Brisbane’s most exquisite Cocktail Bars got me there. The Emporium Cocktail Bar is designed just as fabulously as the rest of the establishment. It features an eclectic collection of locally made, custom-designed pieces and antiques sourced from exotic locations around
the world. Sipping on a ‘Silky Mist’ at the bar, I felt as though James Bond could walk through the door at any minute. And after a cocktail fix and a bit of piano music, we sashayed our way next door to Tartufo restaurant and Wine Bar for an indulgent three course Italian dinner. Tartufo is the vision of Tony Percuoco who over a 36-year culinary journey has scaled the heights of the industry operating a series of internationally acclaimed award-winning restaurants in Sydney and on the Gold Coast. And his food is sublime. We indulged in everything from house made ravioli al pomodoro to pollo in padella, corn fed, oven roasted chicken breast served on a roasted butternut pumpkin and mascarpone purée; agnello in fregola, oven roasted lamb rack served on fregola accompanied by Spanish onion, roma tomatoes, soft herbs, a mascarpone and paprika dressing and red wine lamb jus. Then, just for the sheer pleasure, we split a caramelised pear tart with almond frangipane and vanilla bean gelato. Yum. Sleeping that night was like sleeping on clouds. Literally. The pillows were soft and the bed just right. If it wasn’t for the in room breakfast served up the next morning it would have been easy to sleep all day. And although it was time to check out and head back to reality, we had to enjoy a little taste of France at Belle Époque Patisserie, right next door to the hotel, before the valet brought our car back around. Macaroons, chocolate tart and fresh coffee; what better way to end 24 hours in Brisbane… n

ith only 48 hours to spare you want to visit a place where you can fit in as much, yet as little, as possible. You want a hint of romance, a touch of relaxation, a dash of entertainment and a nip of fun. So…Viva Las Vegas!

Ok maybe not Vegas, but as close as we can get here in Aus. Last month my husband and I needed a break so we spent a wonderful weekend at Jupiters Hotel and Casino on the Gold Coast. From the moment you step inside the building it is easy to forget you are just minutes from Surfers Paradise and
it seems reasonable to think you have just entered one of the casinos in sin city itself. A 30 minute drive from the Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta or a one hour drive from Brisbane Airport, this might be one of the reasons why Jupiters is perfect for a 48 hour stopover.
DAY 1: Check in: Not your usual reception area where you step inside the building and voila… the reception desk is waiting in front of you. Instead, at Jupiters you get your first taste of the casino before you have even checked in. A walk up a carpeted staircase, or quick ride in the lift, and we were overlooking the foyer, the bars, and the casino itself. A few minutes later our trip had officially begun. Room service: We were booked into a room on Level 11 of 21 floors. A refurbishment in 2008 meant the rooms were fresh, modern and extremely comfortable. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. In my experience, hotels with so many rooms, and this one has 592 in total, can sometimes fall below scratch. I had been here less than an hour and Jupiters just kept on surprising me! A (big) bite to eat: We arrived rather late in the day so it wasn’t long before we were heading back down the lift to grab some dinner. And when you are hungry, there really is only one place to go at Jupiters and that is The PA, or The Prince Albert, where supersize was the word of the night. At The PA you get a twist on traditional pubstyle food. And when I say twist, I mean the servings are massive, delicious and inspired by American feasts. We chowed down our meals with a beer; Pablo had an old favourite chicken parmy while I went for salt and pepper squid, while watching some live big screen sport. A man’s kind of heaven I would say. Bit of rhythm: We were lucky enough during our visit to catch the premiere of Mayumana’s Momentum; an internationally acclaimed stage show spectacular that uses dance, music and movement to explore the relationships between rhythm, time and synchronicity. Walking the red carpet down flights of stairs to Jupiters Theatre, which reopened in April last year after a $20 million redevelopment, we felt like stars. Cameras snapped our movements and the champagne was flowing. We took our seats, just 5 rows from the stage, and settled in for 90 minutes of mesmerising music, thumping dance moves and a clever mix of movement and sound.
Take a look: After breakfast, which lasted a good hour or so, we decided to set off on a little exploration of the property. Jupiters Casino is open 24 hours a day, has more than 100 gaming tables and 1,400 gaming machines. But even if you are not much into the gambling side of things, you could easily fill your days here without stepping foot into the casino itself. The new state-of-the-art Jupiters Theatre caters for up to 2150 people and boasts modern technology and architecture including a second balcony level, VIP hospitality rooms for pre and post event functions, purpose-built integrated movie projection booth and a high-tech surround sound system. And there are performances on every night! If you get thirsty or hungry, there are more than 10 bars and eateries, plus in room dining if you don’t feel like getting out of bed. Each of the bars has live entertainment at night and cocktails to die for. Recreational facilities include swimming pools and 2 spas integrated into the lush gardens, a gymnasium, massage services, hair and beauty salons, a games room, shopping facilities and tennis courts giving you plenty to do without even leaving the island.
Downtime: Workout out the way, swim in the pool and plans for a big night ahead meant it was time for a rest. Take a page out of our book and use this time to take a nap, watch some in-house movies or head back down to the pool level for a massage. It’s your time off so enjoy it! Vivo Italia: There are not many occasions these days that allow for women to don long flowing dresses or the men to suit up so take advantage of the Jupiters atmosphere and go all out! And when you are eating your dinner in a restaurant as rustically beautiful as Osteria Vivo, an Italian extravaganza of mouth-watering options, you wouldn’t be doing the night justice without looking your best. To sum up the dining here, it is deceptively simple cooking with the purest of ingredients and incredible flavour. Washed down with a glass (or two) of Moet and you have a dining experience to rival most others. We dined over 2 hours on bruschetta; perfectly fluffy seasonal garlic, ruccola, margarit pizza; wild mushroom risotto; porcini mushroom crusted fillet of beef with handmade ricotta gnocchi. And if you do choose to dine at Osteria Viva, make sure you try the cinnamon zeppole and chocolate anglaise and classic tiramisu with chocolate espresso beans for dessert. Yumm! Roll the dice: For a guaranteed great night out, head to one of Jupiters Hotel & Casino’s eight bars complete with extensive beverage lists and a fantastic line-up of live entertainment including stand-up comedy and bands. Or try your luck in the casino. Whatever you do be sure to start out by taste testing the tequila cocktails in the Atrium Bar – they are delicious!
DAY 2: Food fantasy: I can’t remember the last time I got to sleep in until 8am! And still know that I could take another 2 hours to waddle on down to breakfast before the “Food Fantasy” that awaited me was packed down for the morning. Although we called it a rather early night after the show, a big buffet breakfast was still on the cards. Everything from muffins and pastries to fresh chef cooked omelettes, waffles, crispy bacon, fruit and even a juicer was sprawled ‘tastefully’ across the restaurant.
under. So after a workout this was the perfect way to cool down, catch some rays and unwind.
Work it out: After a tour of the property we decided to do the ‘right thing’ and get in a workout. So we went down to the gym. This is not your average hotel gym. This is an actual gym; with classes and all. So if you want to work off some of the food you have scoffed down, this is the perfect way to spend an hour or so in the afternoon before a well-deserved rest. Fancy a dip: One cannot go past the allure of the pools and spas at Jupiters. They even have fountains to play
DAY 3: Bye bye: After spending some time in Las Vegas (the real one in the USA) we were surprised to find just how much Jupiters reminded us of that trip. The atmosphere was electric, the foyers always busy and whether it is 3am or 3pm there is something happening. But the time had come to check out of Jupiters and check back in to reality. Jupiters we will see you again soon. n

fter a crazy airport trip – running late, getting lost in the terminal – the usual stuff, tension was a little high sitting in our seats waiting for the plane to soar into Proserpine. But the minute you do start flying over the Whitsunday Coast, when you see the lush green mountains rising up from the sea and the coral colours of the ocean, you instantly slip into the relaxation zone. We were spending two nights at the Boathaven Spa Resort in Airlie Beach where the rooms were huge; we were on the top floor with two bedrooms and a double spa bath on the balcony looking out over the ocean, the islands and the new Port of Airlie which was directly across the road. We took some time to explore Airlie’s Main Street that afternoon, had a swim in the pool before heading out to Denman Cellars and Beer Café for dinner.

GET OUT OF TOWN
Which ‘way’ do you choose on Hamilton?
Unique in its concept, Denman’s boasts a bottle shop and cellar inside, a café/restaurant outside and about 700 beers to choose from. The menu is tapas, and the culinary choices reflect the surroundings – fresh seafood, tender steak – all served on flat slate plates and with a recommended beer, cider or wine
to accompany them. There are beers and ciders from all over the world. After standing in front of the beer fridge for about 20 minutes (you can go inside and pick your own from the fridge or have table service) I gave up and asked the waiter for his recommendation. In the end I took a

journey to Cambodia with a Pilsner and Pablo, my husband, visited Austria with a hoppy beer. We followed that with a toffee apple cider and a Spanish beer. Bellies full, it was back to the resort for a spa. The next day was a little more action packed – in fact it was extreme. We were booked on the Daydream Extreme Jet Ski Tour with Whitsundays Jetski Tours. I jumped on the back as a ‘professional passenger’ and let Pablo take the wheel, or handlebars, as we pushed our way into 1.5 metre swells through the Whitsundays Passage to Daydream Island. It was exhilarating! We were jumping over waves, hooning through the ocean with sea spray drenching us and neither of us could take the smiles off our faces. The trip out was about 25km and then we spent two hours on Daydream which included lunch and a live reef encounter where we fed manta rays and held a shark!
25 more km bashing through choppy seas and we were back on dry land – the smile was still there. That night it was off for a drink, or two, at some of Airlie’s best bars including Fish D’vine and Rum Bar where Dr Rum made the best mojito I have ever had. And the food there, prawn wontons with Asian dipping sauce, oysters Kilpatrick and prawn cutlets really was ‘D’vine’. The next morning it was time to check out, and say goodbye to the spa which I had become quite accustomed too, and set off to the Great Barrier Reef with Cruise Whitsundays. We were on board the vessel Seaflight for a three hour cruise out to the Reefworld Pontoon at Hardy’s reef. It was magical – the colours of green and blue, the kind of seascape you see in the brochures, this is what you arrive to. We had about 4 hours on the pontoon so we jumped straight in for a snorkel swimming side by side with an array of colourful fish including huge Queensland Gropers, parrot fish (my favourite) and even a sea turtle. The visibility was great and the marine life so vibrant. After the snorkel it was a big buffet lunch then a sunbake before I indulged in a half hour massage on the top deck of the pontoon. There is something so peaceful about having a massage with the fresh sea air on your face. On the way back in to shore we were dropped off at Hamilton Island where we spent the next two nights at the Reef View Hotel. It was beautiful and the views couldn’t have been better; from our room on the 15th floor we woke to sweeping vistas out over Hamilton Island, the beach, the resort and the glistening ocean. On our first evening we were treated to what can only be described as an open aired food extravaganza at the islands newest restaurant coca chu. Headed up by Adam Woodfield, previously of New York’s Manhattan restaurant Betel, coca chu delivers a completely unique offering of modern Southeast Asian cuisine and the restaurant overlooks picturesque Catseye Beach.
The meals at coca chu were enjoyed as a banquet where everyone dug in to taste test the bold flavours. Must-try dishes include a starter of son in law eggs with sweet yellow bean sauce and green mango, and my favourite, twice cooked half duck with plum tamarind sauce, lemon and prickly-ash. Yum! The next morning on board Hamilton Island’s famous buggy’s we explored the island. There is nothing quite like cruising around on these golf buggy’s – we did about five full round trips of the island, during the day and night and had a ball! From the marina to the chapel, Yacht Club Villas to the islands most exclusive accommodation, Qualia, we explored everything – and why not, there is so much to see. We were even welcomed with a chilled glass of Charles Heidsieck Champagne at Qualia’s Long Pavilion, which looked more like a setting in a scene from a James Bond movie where you see the blue waters from the edge pool seemingly flowing over into the ocean below, your view flanked by mountains on all sides. The yellow, blues and browns of the Qualia décor finished off the scene perfectly. Guests at Qualia have exclusive use of two qualia restaurants, both overseen by Executive Chef Alastair Waddell. The rooms, or pavilions, are well worth the price tag with a selection of pavilions boasting a private plunge pool and views to rival any other. Although we were not staying at Qualia, we enjoyed soaking up the atmosphere for a while before heading back to our resort for a lazy swim in the pool. It was happy hour so margaritas and mojitos were on the cards. I don’t know what it is about sunbaking under swaying palm trees by a shimmering pool with a cocktail in your hand that just makes everything seem peaceful and the time tick by slower. That night, although the wind had picked up, we set out once again in our buggy to One Tree Hill, a place high on the hill that promised one of the best sunset views on the island. We were not disappointed. Cocktail in hand (again) we watched the sun rays beam down from the darkening clouds and seep into the deep blue ocean – after 40 minutes the mountains ate up what was left of the orange circle in the sky and we head off to dinner at Manta Ray Café for one of their famous pizzas. Waking the next morning we knew it was that time; time to enjoy one last buffet breakfast at the Pool Terrace Restaurant and check out. But not before a hit of mini golf (which I won!) and a quick cuddle with one of Australia’s favourite friends – a koala. At the Wildlife Park you can have breakfast with these cute creatures and then give one of the resident koalas a cuddle while you pose for a photo. As for my koala, Elvis was his name and taking over the world with his cuteness was his game – I was so excited that I threw all my extra coins in the donation tin after the cuddle. And then it was off to the airport and back to normality. n

And to kick off the celebrations, Air Pacific operated its inaugural ‘sneak peek’ commercial flight to Brisbane with its first new Airbus A330 last month. from Brisbane to regional and remote centres, Thursday Island and the Gold Coast. Last year's offerings garnered record audience attendance of 178,000 people. And with big brass 49-year-old trumpeter/ multi-instrumentalist James Morrison on board as Artistic Director, this year’s event is set to be bigger and better.
James described his appointment as an extremely exciting new chapter in his life. “Having spent many years performing all over Queensland, I have an appreciation for the breadth of music this state has to offer,” he said. “I’m most looking forward to the side of the role where I get to dream up mad concert ideas and do them … all across the state. The stage is 1.7 million square km, so it’s going to be massive.” James loves music and loves the way it can transform people. “The vision for this year is to transform lives through unforgettable musical experiences,” James said. “That’s what we plan to do. “We have done everything from commissioning new musicals to setting up a 2 person concert. And we are going for a world record with the World’s Biggest Orchestra. Concert bands, brass bands, string ensembles, primary and secondary school bands and orchestras, and individual musicians from across Australia are invited to participate. There will be a set piece of music and thousands of accomplished or aspiring musicians will play together. “We need 6,500 musicians to break the current record for the World’s Biggest Orchestra and more than 1,200 trumpeters to break the record for the Largest Trumpet Ensemble. “And then there are the other events that would not normally happen. Like Tina Arena coming to play with a full symphony orchestra in a paddock in Moranbah. “I’m really looking forward to seeing the festival come to life and to seeing the regional areas bursting with music.” Visit www.qmf.org.au for more information, tickets and a full event program.
A bit about James Morrison:
J
ames Morrison is a virtuoso in the true sense of the word. Besides the trumpet, this multi-instrumentalist also plays trombone, euphonium, flugel horn, tuba, saxophones, double bass and piano. At age seven he was given his first instrument, at nine he formed his first band and at thirteen he was playing professionally in nightclubs. His international career developed just as quickly. At just 16 James debuted in the USA with a breathtaking concert at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Following this were performances at the big festivals in Europe including Montreaux, Pori, North Sea, Nice and Bern - playing with many jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Cab Calloway, Woody Shaw, Red Rodney, George Benson, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Ray Brown and
Wynton Marsalis to name a few. Now 49, James Morrison’s career thus far has been diverse. He recorded Jazz Meets the Symphony with The London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lalo Schifrin, performed concerts at the Royal Albert hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for Princess Anne. He has played royal command performances on two occasions for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and for US Presidents Bush and Clinton at Parliament House in Australia. In 1997, James was recognised for his service to the arts in Australia and awarded a medal of The Order of Australia. And most recently he has taken on his newest challenge – Artistic Director of the Queensland Music Festival. n

ovotel Brisbane Airport Hotel is ideally situated just a hop, skip and jump away from the airport and Brisbane City making it the perfect stopover spot for business and corporate travellers. Checking in to the reception I was impressed with the beautifully designed lounges; perfect for sitting back to read the morning paper or meet with friends before heading out to see a show at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Boondall. My suite on the third floor was equally as impressive with high standard room finishing’s and everything you could possibly need for an overnight stay including a proper coffee machine – you know the ones that use those delicious coffee pods. But the coffee was to be kept for another time, now I was off to the races. After a quick drink at the hotel bar, I was whisked away to the Doomben Racecourse for their Annual Girls Day. Arriving at the course there were ladies of all ages dressed to impress already enjoying the sunshine and a bet or two. We started off with tastings of Skinny Girl Cocktails, watched a Miss Universe Pageant and got waited on by some lovely topless

waiters - men of course. Following that was a lovely buffet lunch in the East Terraces where I could watch my race picks cross the finish line, not always in the order I would have liked them to be.
And although this experience was amazing, the highlight of the day was being lucky enough to go up to the callers box and watch a race being called. It is definitely a talent to not only be able to remember the names of every horse in every race but be able to recognise them out on the course as well. But the best, as they say, was yet to come as we made our way across the enclosures and into a mini-van that drove us around to the starting gates where we watched the horses guided into position for the start of their race. Being this close to the horses just made my day. After another couple of races we headed back to the Novotel for a quick freshen up before going back down to the hotel’s Catalina Restaurant for a three course dinner. Although I am usually a two course girl, dessert was too decadent to refuse. And after such a busy day, a good night’s sleep in one of the most comfortable hotel beds I’ve ever stayed in was just what I needed. A buffet breakfast the next morning was the cherry on top of a great stopover stay and play. n

PACKED and GOOD

here is nothing worse than getting off a long flight and not being able to wash your face, freshen up and clean your teeth before heading to a meeting or to start your work. So TravelCosmetics have come up with a solution with the perfect travel companion for frequent flyers, business and long haul adventurers - pre-packed travel cosmetics good to go. The motivation for developing the products came from owner Michelle Govers frustration with the endless packing and measuring of product when travelling. “So I developed TravelCosmetics to service the busy traveller,” she said. Michelle combined her three career passions, travel, skin care and flying, to create a range of MG skin care products which she now packages up in a convenient travel wallet. Michelle’s determination to keep the product Australian and her skills in the skin care industry prompted her ongoing research and eventual product development. “This product and way of packaging means travellers have a convenient way to take these items with them when they fly and there is no extra cost for baggage,” Michelle said. “And knowing you have all you need for your personal hygiene with you is peace of mind.” The travel wallet is designed to be flat and smooth for carrying ease. It has a compartment for travel documentation, passport and also your smart phone.
“We are providing convenience but also quality,” Michelle said. “The products you get with us are professional skin care products, not over the counter product that has been mass produced. “And the expandable washer and environmentally friendly bamboo toothbrush is not only tremendous for personal hygiene needs its gives a little back to our environment as well.” Visit www.travelcosmetics.com.au for more information. n

EXPO FEATURE
Australia & P.N.G Mining Resources Exhibition;
A Mining Expo With A Difference
M
embers of the mining and resources industry will gather over two days on June 13 and 14 at the Cairns Showgrounds in Australia for the Australia & P.N.G Mining Resources Exhibition. With the inaugural event in October 2012 attracting 125 exhibitors, organisers said numbers this year would increase and they expect 5,000 people through the gates over the two days. The Expo pairs suppliers with workers of the mining and resources industry all across Australia, with a focus on Papua New Guinea, north, central and west Queensland. Presented by Trade Show Organisers and Inflight Publishing Pty Ltd, the Expo will provide attendees with a relaxing atmosphere to discover all there is to know about the mining and resource industry. “The expo will showcase new and upgraded products as well as services relevant to the mining and resources industry,” Trade Show Organisers CEO Patrick McElligott said. “There will be both internal and external stalls and for the first time we will have a business centre on the mezzanine level where exhibitors can entertain potential clients in a relaxed atmosphere on a more personal level.” Event Manager Keryn Haynes said the Expo provided the perfect platform for suppliers of
the mining and resource industry to directly reach this niche market. “This is a chance for buyers of the mining industry from across Australia as well as PNG and beyond to shop around for essential goods and services and a fantastic opportunity for the exhibitors to meet these people and build sustainable working relations with them,” she said. “To further enhance exhibitor’s products and services to the attendees, we will only have a maximum of 200 exhibitor stands ensuring all exhibitors get maximum benefit. All the exhibitors will have new as well as tried and proven products and services on display relevant to all the industries. “And we are excited to announce some big sponsors this year including Air Niugini, Airways Hotel, Bank of South Pacific, Grand Papua Hotel, Orica, Qantaslink and Spill Station.” Cairns was chosen to host the event because of its great locality, proximity to PNG and because it made connections with the PNG and Queensland mining industry workers and suppliers easier. “This inaugural event last year boosted the Cairns economy by bringing visitors and exhibitors coming from as far away as Perth and PNG. We expect the same to happen this year,” Keryn said. “And the dates were especially chosen so
that those attending could enjoy the weekend off in fabulous North Queensland. We are hoping people will extend their stay in Cairns so we are putting on a Reef and Beef Meet and Greet on June12, an Awards Presentation Dinner at the Hilton Hotel with live entertainment and special guest speakers on June 13, and a Charity Golf Day on June 15. It’s a great way for the miners and suppliers to enjoy a hit of golf together. The golf day will support two charities, Cheshire disAbility Services PNG and Miners' Promise.” Sister companies Trade Show Organisers and Inflight Publishing Pty Ltd are no strangers to the mining industry as they produce Mining Life & Living Magazine – one of the country’s most successful mining magazines. “And after great success with our Mining Life & Living publications in Australia we are very excited to be launching a new publication Mining Life & Living PNG at the expo; a lifestyle magazine specific to miners in PNG.” The Expo will be held from 9.30am – 6pm both days and it’s free entry for attendees. Opportunities for exhibitors and sponsors are still available. Entry to the expo is free. he inaugural Regional Queensland Lifestyle Expo (RQL) produced by Trade Show Organisers and Inflight Publishing will be held at King George Square, the heart of Brisbane City July 16-17, 2013. The concept of the Regional Queensland Lifestyle Expo is to bring the country assets to the city for the residents of South East Queensland to view the options, the tourist attractions and available lifestyle in regional Queensland. From 9.30am – 6pm over two days in July, the newly re-designed King George Square, adjacent the Brisbane City Hall, will be brought to life with exhibitors ranging from tourism operators to mining and resource providers, QLD councils and government departments to regional community members and businesses. Trade Show Organisers CEO Patrick McElligott said he was pleased with the response from exhibitors and government officials in relation to the inaugural expo. “It is an expo to showcase what regional QLD has to offer,” he said. And Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has put his support behind the expo.
“I am very pleased to lend my support to the Regional Queensland Lifestyle Expo,” he said. “Living and working in Brisbane, we sometimes forget that there is more to our state than what we see on our daily commute to the office. “Having the country pay our CBD a visit reminds us that Queensland is brimming with beauty, diversity, adventure and opportunity. “Every region has its own distinct character and every country town has something unique to offer the traveller who decides to pull up for a while or for good. “The aim of this expo is to show us 'city slickers' the many reasons why we should put an outback Queensland holiday or a move to regional Queensland on our must− do list.” Visit the expo on July 16 and 17. Aviator for a day BY KAREN ROLFE
ooking for an awesome gift idea for your hard to please teenager? Then Pterodactyl Helicopters Junior Aviator for a Day program is just what you’ve been looking for. When I told my son Harry I had booked this for his 14th birthday present, the reply text really said it all… “Are You Serious?? OMG!!” So to say he was a little bit excited was an understatement. His day started with a meet and greet at the Lake Manchester hanger where Captain Mike Jarvis handed him his cap and shirt and got down to the business end. After checking the NOTAMS (Notice to Airmen for the nonflyers among us), the weather, and after a call to the RAAF Base at Amberley for clearance and a flight number for the first part of the trip, we were off to do the safety checks. Every aspect of the process is patiently explained by Mike, and Harry was fully involved with everything which was fantastic. After being cleared for take-off, the chopper was loaded up and off they went to the helicopter
landing site at Normanby Wines where they do joyrides at the quarterly Jazz Festival. The landing site changes weekly as Pterodactyl attend everything from Cup Days to Queensland Raceway Events. After refueling the helicopter, the day of escorting happy customers on their flights began, with Harry learning the safety brief and everything from the physics of flying to the mechanical operation of all of the equipment. At the end of the flying day, you still have to complete your duty which means flying home with the pilot while the ground crew drives back. You will write up the day’s hours, fill out the log books both for the aircraft and the pilot and update the maintenance schedule board. You will then be presented with your “Pterodactyl Helicopters Junior Aviators Certificate”. So if your budding junior aviator is aged between 10 and 15 years, this is a gift they will remember and treasure for a lifetime, and who knows, it could also be the start of their aviation career. n

he phone call at 7pm Friday night was the news we were waiting to hear. Clear weather in the morning, we were good to go with our first ballooning adventure. Driving out to the launch site at 5am we were a mixture of excitement, anticipation and looking forward to being involved in the experience from start to finish. Meeting Graeme Day at the helicopter pad in Limestone Park, Ipswich we jumped in the back of the 4WD and drove further around to our launch site for the morning. As Graeme explained he has a few to choose from depending on the wind direction for takeoff. When you sign up for a Floating Images experience that is exactly what you are in for. We were hands on from the start, unpacking the balloon and getting everything set up for inflation. As Graeme briefed us on the ever important safety issues, we were all too busy watching the

burners and fans inflate our massive balloon and waiting for it to tip up the basket so we could all jump onboard. Graeme has been flying commercial balloon flights since 1991, after falling into the industry in France, the birthplace of ballooning. His skill and ease is obvious and very comforting at 2200 feet above the ground. I was very impressed that of the ten guests onboard, he knew everyone by name and was an absolute wealth of information as we effortlessly floated through the sky. If you are worried about motion sickness, don’t be. Ballooning is the most surreal exhilarating feeling; you really are floating on air. When the basket leaves the ground, you don’t feel like you are moving, everyone was surprised at how smooth the lift off was. We saw everything as the sun rose, the clouds lifted and we floated through the sky for about 30kms; breathtaking views of the City of

Ipswich, the RAAF base, Queenslanders galore, Flinders Peak, Mt Walker, The D’Aguilar Range, Wivenhoe Dam, The Lockyer Valley and the Brisbane and Bremer Rivers. After about an hour in the air, we slowly descended onto a beautiful local property where Ron appeared in the 4WD to take us back to the launch site and onwards for a restaurant champagne breakfast where we all shared our excitement of the morning. Everyone was involved in deflating and packing up the equipment (many hands make light work) which was definitely a team bonding experience. If you are looking for a way to spoil your partner, snuggling up together 2200 ft in the air is a sure fire winner. Best date ever! You’ll be hard pressed to top this adventure. Record-breaking results at Brisbane Grammar School

AML0413
risbane Grammar School’s 2012 senior students have set new benchmarks after returning some outstanding academic results. In the 21 years of recording OP outcomes, last year’s students brought home the highest percentage of OP1s in the school’s history with 20.6% of the seniors attaining an OP1; 51 in total. The OP 1 to 7 results at 68.5% were the second best recorded in history by BGS students while the OP1-13 and OP 1 – 15 results at 93.1% and 97% respectively were also historical records for the school. Headmaster Brian Short emphasised Brisbane Grammar’s commitment to the outcome of all students by highlighting that the entire Year 12 population was tertiary eligible. “These outcomes encouraged a wide range of quality tertiary opportunities for our graduating students, with over 99% of applicants receiving a tertiary offer,” Mr Short said. Mr Short said the academic results came on the back of some outstanding extracurricular and community involvement in
2012 which included five GPS premierships, a first class music program, and some amazing talent being showcased in the visual and performing arts.
“We are also extremely proud of our flourishing community service program which sees widespread student participation with fundraising and hands-on community work happening at home and overseas,” he said. Brisbane Grammar’s Director of Boarding Simon Hill will be at the Xstrata Mount Isa Mining Expo where you can talk to him about the ‘gold standard’ boarding programs offered at the school and enjoyed by boys from across Queensland, NSW, Northern Territory, PNG and further abroad. n

Learning for Life HOW TO MANAGE STUDY WITH A FULL TIME JOB
M
ost people think they either have to work or study. But, with a little planning you can get qualified and keep your job too. Whether you want to increase your skill set with a certificate or diploma, or you want to get a full degree so you can nab your dream career down the track – it is possible to continue working so the money flow, and your quality of life continues too. Of course there are pros and cons to working and studying at the same time and it won’t be for everyone, but if you want to give it a go, you will need to learn to manage your time and get organised.
Here are some helpful tips: Set up a study space: It might not seem like such a big deal but setting up a quiet, uncluttered study space helps you to get focused and stay focused. You will most likely study at home so an area away from distractions such as the TV or family members where you can have your textbooks, notes and computer on hand makes for less stressful study time.
If it’s not, at least you have put aside those extra hours and it hasn’t inconvenienced your lifestyle too much, or put too much extra stress on you during a working day.
Keep motivated: When studying and working it can be easy to lose motivation without constant student contact.
Make a plan and stick to it: Set up a daily or weekly plan for yourself and ensure you set aside time for your studies daily.
Use technology (e-mail, social media and texts) to share ideas and brainstorm.
Split up readings into weekly intervals so your study is manageable and make a list so you can cross off sections as you finish them. This will also give you a sense of accomplishment. Another idea is to speak with your employer and let them know you study too. See if you can plan your shifts around your study schedule, or if not, plan your study around your work hours.
Make one sacrifice each day: If you sacrificed just one hour of television or social time each work day to dedicate to study, that’s five hours of study each week. Depending on what you are studying, this may be enough.
This will also make you accountable for your study.
Have some free time: If you are trying to work and study at the same time, but find all you are doing is working and studying, then it is time to take a step back. You will burn yourself out very quickly if you don’t schedule in some time for recreation. Whether it is some time out with friends or loved ones, or maybe just a few hours to watch a movie each week, you need to give yourself a break and have some “free time”. Getting outside in the fresh air and doing some exercise will also help clear your mind and allow you to de-stress and rejuvenate. n

RELATIONSHIP MATTERS
B WHY FIFO WORKERS

inding Financial Agreements (BFAs), better known as ‘prenups,’ are a useful but no means watertight solution to protecting the wealth of you and your children. In recent years I’ve seen an increase in younger FIFO workers, male and female, inquiring about BFAs. So what are they exactly? BFAs signed before a couple gets married or start living together serve the purpose of setting out the division of assets in the event of them divorcing, or for de facto relationships on the termination of that relationship. A BFA can also be used during an otherwise happy relationship to set out what happens if the relationship breaks down. But BFAs are not straightforward. Asking your girlfriend or fiancé to sign a legal agreement spelling out the division of assets in event of divorce or separation is not an area where the law and human relationships sit comfortably. A second and a very important concern is that Courts across the country have set aside BFA’s for a variety of reasons including fraud, a party being ‘bullied’ into signing, a material change of circumstances such as the birth of a child, or non compliance with the strict procedure for independent legal advice and signing. It is important to ensure that both the drafting of a BFA, and the process by which both parties negotiate and execute the agreement is carried out in such a way that it reduces the risk of a challenge in the future. A carefully drafted and executed BFA can provide protection of your assets against the claims which inevitably follow marriage or relationship breakdown. In summary, while a carefully drawn and correctly executed BFA may not guarantee a complete and irrevocable solution, it can serve as a powerful deterrent. FIFO newbies - how to make it work
BY DEB RUSSO
A
journalist asked me the other day how my husband and I have survived FIFO all these years. First of all: there is no surviving. This was and is a choice. We actively took the job. We knew it was working away. We adapted to it. If you don’t evolve or learn to roll with what life hands you, then you're going to fail whether it’s FIFO or not. FIFO just makes it trickier. Having said that, a good attitude and clear communication are also vital - but that goes for every relationship. So what's my advice for FIFO newbies? You need to understand the job. You need to understand the roster. There has to be a reason you’re doing this. Keep that in perspective. For us it’s the lifestyle. For others it's the money. We do 4:4 weeks (four weeks on followed by four weeks off). So we work six months of the year. Those four weeks at work can be tough, but we know that. We knew that when we took the job. Understand how long that time is away from each other. You will have good days, great days, some bad days and horrible days but that’s life ... nothing in this life comes easy. How you adapt and change will you see you succeed or fail. My husband and I talk about everything from divorce to life after death. Some people say we've cursed our relationship by already talking about divorce, but if you can’t talk about
everything without fear (no matter what the scenario) then you're in trouble. The same goes for being willing to listen. There is a right and wrong way to communicate. If you don’t know how to do it, learn how (and quickly). Adapting and having the right attitude go hand in hand. Life is all about evolving. We never get something for nothing, and FIFO is no different. You want to make decent money with good
time off? Well then, a little hard work is required. You can’t be naive and go in thinking it's going to be easy all the time, because it’s not easy for anyone. Not for the partner working away, the partner at home or your children. The way to get through is to find a routine (and roster) that works for you. Try different things until you find what is right for you - and by that I mean what works for you and your family - not what others tell you is right! Go with your instincts and trust yourselves as a unit. n

Screen Time, the company behind Tim Winton's Cloudstreet, is planning to film a factual documentary towards the end of the year. They're not looking for "actors or contestants" but real workers and families in mining, oil and gas willing to allow them to observe and ask questions about their lives at this point in Australia's history. If you're interested, you'll need to provide a brief description of yourself, your work, where you live and who you work for, and what the mining lifestyle means to you. Please note, at this stage the program is under development and no guarantee is given to the participation of anyone who applies. n the Queensland mining hub of Mt Isa, volunteers are needed to help enrich the lives of residents in aged care facilities. Lorraine Hamilton, a Visiting Services Coordinator with the Australian Red Cross, explains more... “The Community Visitors Scheme is a national program funded by the Department of Health and Ageing to enrich the quality of life of residents of age care facilities,” Ms Hamilton said. “Volunteer visitors are matched with a resident who has limited or no contact with family and/or friends to provide friendship and companionship. “The visits are relaxed and social, with the volunteer and resident simply chatting together, sharing a cup of tea, playing a board game or taking a walk around the home. We currently have vacancies at the Laura Johnson Home in Mount Isa for volunteer visitors. We’re after volunteers who: • are understanding and empathetic of older people; • understand and respect confidentiality; • have good communication and listening skills; • are flexible, creative and adaptable; and • can work independently. “The minimum commitment is one hour per fortnight. Visits can occur either weekly or fortnightly, during the week or on weekends. “We provide full training, and all Red Cross volunteers will also require a compulsory police check.” For further information about volunteering in Mt Isa or Longreach, please contact Red Cross Volunteer Services on 1300 554 419 or by email to qld_visiting_services@redcross.org.au n

Strategies for success in The Survival Guide for Families in Oil & Gas BY ANGIE WILLCOCKS
S
taying in touch: We all have different ways of dealing with difficult situations. Some people need as much contact as possible to feel connected. Others prefer to withdraw, and find that limited contact helps them cope. So if your FIFO partner seems distant and unwilling to remain on the phone in the early days, try not to take it personally. Setting routines: For those on FIFO rosters, how ‘home’ time is spent can become a major source of conflict. Practical suggestions that work for some couples include agreeing from the outset on a set number of nights that will be spent together and socialising together or apart. Women in oil and gas: It’s important not to fall into unhelpful thinking patterns such as ‘magnifying’ (blowing a problem out of proportion), ‘personalising’ (making the problem all about you) and ‘over-generalising’ (making any problem about your gender, when the issue might actually have nothing to do with it). Overcoming jealousy: We’ve heard that jealousy and insecurity are sometimes a problem when workers are getting used to extended rosters on oil rigs. Apparently, some workers think it’s fun to joke about partners having affairs back home. Just tell yourself “everyone’s got a story and their story is not my story”. Change the subject or leave the conversation altogether. Friends and family: Encourage the ‘away’ partner to keep in regular contact with friends and family via phone or email when away. Encourage the ‘home’ partner to make plans to see friends and family even when the ‘away’ worker is home. This eases the pressure on you both. Increasing intimacy: Differing libidos challenge most long-term relationships. When sex becomes a major issue, the lower libido partner feels the need to send frequent signals that “I am definitely not in the mood”. The result is less intimacy in the whole relationship. That’s when it’s time to break your ‘sex cycle’. United parenting: Families separated for work are often good communicators because they take the time to discuss issues instead of assuming that mum/dad will ‘just know’. Some families start every break with a catch-up on purely practical parenting issues. This sends a strong message to the kids that mum and dad are a united team. Helping kids to cope: If your child is missing mum/dad, allow them to talk about it and offer an extra cuddle. Avoid saying things like “be brave” or “don’t be silly” because your child might begin to hide feelings away from you, thinking that you are not interested or that they are unacceptable feelings to discuss. Family rules: Depending on the age of your kids, involve them in the creation of family rules to stick on the fridge. Remember the golden rule for FIFO families: the rules apply all the time, whether you are home or not. Standard rules are very important for kids in hectic households. The Survival Guide for Families in Oil & Gas is a 32-page, A5 booklet featuring professional advice from MiningFM's psychologist Angie Willcocks and practical tips for keeping families strong and healthy despite lengthy periods apart. It's targeted at energy companies for distribution to new and existing employees on FIFO and DIDO (drive-in, drive-out) rosters, or living in remote mining communities. Not only are you working up a sweat and actually feeling like you have accomplished something, every time you punch a boxing bag, speedball or focus pad you are actually toning your muscles. Boxing is also a fantastic stress buster. While you are concentrating on the combination of punches your trainer is giving you, your mind is free from stress. You get to escape for 30 minutes sweating it out and leave feeling alive and ready to face the world again. Due to the intensity of boxing, you will increase your cardio fitness level and your strength in a very short period of time. hat is better than chocolate, wine and a warm summers day all rolled into one? Everyone has their own ideas, but for my money, an amazing massage has the same relaxing effect as a two week holiday.
Massage has come a long way in the last decade, and has seen an explosion of many different styles and treatments, all designed to reduce stress, realign bodies and reduce muscle aches. From the deep tissue therapeutic remedial
massage, to the more relaxing Swedish massage style, right through to hot stone massages and even pregnancy massages, there is a style for literally ‘every body’. The key to getting a good massage is to make sure you use a therapist that is fully qualified. The massage industry introduced nationally accredited courses over 15 years ago, so always check that the therapist has some sort of massage qualification. Another good way to ensure you get a great massage is to ask if they offer health fund rebates (fully qualified therapists will), and ask if they belong to a reputable massage association like the Australian Association of Massage therapists (AAMT). Massage therapists are health care professionals, just like nurses or ambulance men and women, and have undertaken medical training suitable to their field and work under a similar code of ethics. And of course, let them know why you are getting a massage. The massage style and techniques used will be very different from someone who has a sore back to someone wanting to readjust their body clock. Don’t be shy, a good therapist will listen and ask questions and adjust their style of massage to suit you. So what are you waiting for? Do something nice for yourself and your body (and perhaps your partner as well) and book a massage. n

f it is good enough for International Super Model Miranda Kerr, Celebrity Chef Pete Evans, Actor Hugh Jackman and Pro Surfer Taj Burrows, it’s good enough for me! As a naturopath and detox specialist, Bondi based Saimaa Miller sees Aussie’s from all walks of life; parents, celebrities, professionals, retirees, bohemians and sportsmen. What do they all have in common? They all want to look and feel great. So the naturopath, nutritionist, herbalist and health coach founded The Last Resort Organic Detox Spa in Bondi in 2005. Saimaa has since been helping people restore health and rebalance to their lives. “My love of natural medicine came from my mum. She was never big on using commercial medicines and she taught me the value of nature. She passed away when I was quite young so I wanted to continue learning about naturopathy and what she had introduced me to,” Saimaa said. “I trained with masters in natural therapies all across the world and the learning happened for me before I actually did my degree.” Now, Saimaa has released her book Aussie Body Diet & Detox Plan to share her secrets to getting the vibrant and healthy Aussie body we dream of. “Aussie Body Diet & Detox Plan is for anyone from athletes to parents, from those looking to lose a few kilos to those chasing the bright complexion and energetic outlook synonymous with being an Aussie,” Saimaa said. In Aussie Body Diet & Detox Plan Saimaa helps you decide what type of ‘detoxer’ you are and prescribes a custom made fourteen day program that is right for you. Shopping lists, meal planners and tips from Saimaa’s celebrity clients will help along the way, as well her delicious recipes (and this is a diet that endorses dessert!). “I wanted to write something that would be helpful to everyone and would appeal to everyone across the country,” Saimaa said. “I want people to realise there is an obesity epidemic but getting your body back on track is actually really easy. “By using food, water, detox and movement properly and by getting out in nature, getting some sunlight and thinking differently, you can become healthy and happy.” The best part is that Saimaa’s recipes can be used long after the fourteen day detox is over and Aussie Body Diet & Detox Plan arms anyone with the tools and the knowledge needed to live a healthier, happier life. Saimaa is a big believer in traditional naturopathy specialises in nutritional programs. “I treat everyone as an individual. Every single body is different,” she said. Saimaa offers face to face consultations, or for those interstate, a personalised assessment and program via skype. Visit www.aussiebodydiet.com for more information. n

f watching pro surfers ride some of the world’s biggest waves; or crusty demons tearing up the tracks gets you going, then Garage Entertainment is going to knock your socks off. Garage Entertainment is the brainchild of Michael Lawrence and Nicholas Cook, producers of award-winning blockbusters Bra Boys and Fighting Fear. Their experience running a packaged DVD distribution business dealing in more than 1000 action sports titles – and making action films themselves – inspired them to create a
platform to fill a hole that seemed glaringly empty. They’ve been developing the concept for several years, and this year is the year that all their hard work finally pays off. Garage Entertainment offers an alternative to torrenting or iTunes for niche films that are hard to find online. Action and adventure sports fans will be able to access a library of inspiring feature films in a niche, multidevice capable media streaming library. From surfing to mountain biking, paragliding
to skiing, Garage Entertainment will offer viewers the option of pay per view or cheap monthly subscriptions for access to a diverse library of films that explore the excitement of outdoors and adventure sports. www.garagentertainment.com.au will offer hundreds of action sports films on demand – and accessible via internetconnected televisions, computers, tablets and smartphones, offering viewers an opportunity to watch the films they love on the beach, in the sky or under the sun.
Tell me a bit about yourself and your journey to this point? I spent 15 years as the GM of two large fashion businesses but I have just loved films and business from an early age and have always wanted to combine my passion for both. So starting a film production and distribution business seemed like a good idea. My business partner and I saw a gap in the market for working in the niche space of the big action sports and adventure documentaries and films and started Garage Entertainment about 4 years ago. We now have the rights to over 1000 films including films from Red Bull, Rip Curl, Nitro Circus Taylor Steele to name just a few key producers and brands we work closely with. What sparked the idea of Garage Entertainment? We made the film called “Bra Boys” (Australia’s Highest Ever Grossing Doc of all time) and have since made the AFI/ACCTA winning follow up documentary “Fighting Fear” and been involved with two other theatrically released documentaries “First Love” and “This Time Tomorrow”.
Interview with Michael Lawrence from Garage Entertainment >>
We also have a 10 part half hour reality show on Fox Sports/FUEL, so we know the space pretty well. Hence we feel we understand what film makers and brands need from a distributor in this space. What is the most exciting this about this venture? Doing something new and different, building a new distribution system, giving film producers and brands a bigger canvas to make more money back to then make more films. We just love working with cool cutting edge companies like Red Bull. n

Edna May staff catch all the action with Foxtel iQ boxes in every room Edna May Gold Mine in Westonia, WA, (part of the Evolution Mining Group), is the first Australian mine to provide a Platinum Foxtel offering with an iQ box in every employee’s room. To help celebrate this, Foxtel brought some former AFL Superstars to Westonia. Devon Roberts, Environmental and Community Superintendent for Edna May says the unique in-room facility goes great lengths to attracting and retaining staff and keeping them entertained and satisfied.
for everyone. Having an iQ box in-room also provides miners with the ability to pause, record and rewind live TV, so they have full control over what they watch and when, even if they are on shift work.
Roberts continued, “The next thing we knew, some of our favourite former Dockers and Eagles stars were coming out to the local Rec Complex and the mine site – not something that happens every day”.
“With Foxtel iQ in each room, all of the staff have been enjoying the extra entertainment, like they would at home.”
Foxtel understands that it’s important to keep FIFO miners entertained. An independent study has shown 50% of miners surveyed indicated access to pay TV is important in managing loneliness*. So, to demonstrate Foxtel’s commitment to entertaining the mining industry and bringing better entertainment to Westonia, Foxtel brought some of WA’s favourite AFL stars to the town for a community BBQ and footy clinic.
The wider Westonia community were keen to get involved with many miners and locals playing alongside the pros in an AFL drill clinic. Roberts agrees, “The event was great, not just for employees but for the entire Westonia community. The kids all got some signed gear, not to mention the equipment Foxtel donated to the local footy club.”
The new Platinum package provides staff with access to an even broader range of popular channels to watch after a hard day’s work including FOX FOOTY, helping staff keep up to date with their favourite team. MIND OVER MATTER
The Seven motivations of life M
eaning, wisdom, courage, compassion, power, pleasure, survival; these are the seven motivations of life and leadership according to Mark Oliver, CEO of international consultancy, MarkTwo Consulting. After leaving the army Mark noticed motivation was something that wasn’t well addressed. “Many people have tried, and failed, to identify traits of leaders. But the difference is the motivation and understanding this and how it affects us and what we do,” Mark said. So Mark began a quest to develop the Universal Hierarchy of Motivation (UHM) leadership development tool. “The UHM model is about whole mind thinking which is much more effective than whole brain thinking. It provides a whole new way of understanding human nature, personality, culture and behaviour,” Mark said. “There was once the argument that a person could never be altruistic, but recent advances in neuroscience have validated the UHM theory. We are now learning everyone has the capacity to be motivated altruistically, or selflessly. “The UHM model breaks down the selfish and selfless motivations. Each level of the model is another step towards altruistic motivation and ultimately meaning.” Mark has run leadership development and assessment courses since 1986 in both military and commercial environments. In 2002 Mark set up MarkTwo Consulting, then wrote his first book, A Himalayan Trinity, published in 2003. “The first book was three books in one, or three journey’s in one that were each very different but
a similar process was evident in each; my journey through cancer, my journey to assist with water supply in the Himalayas and my journey in developing the UHM model,” Mark said. In 2005 Mark began working on his second book which took five years of research to complete – ‘The Seven Motivations of Life – Taking your leadership to a higher level’. He has just released the second edition of this. “This book sheds insight on human intelligence and one's own motivational drivers to enhance self-awareness and self-leadership in both professional and personal life,” Mark said. “We are all leaders, at times, in life. At the very least life demands that we lead ourselves. “Confucius once said 'to become a leader
you must first become a human being'. The Seven Motivations of Life and Leadership explains more clearly what this means. So it is also a way to help you to answer big questions in both your personal and professional life, such as who am I? What is my purpose? Where am I going? How can I lead myself and others more effectively? “The book's underpinning theory is The Universal Hierarchy of Motivation (UHM); we are all human beings and UHM provides great insights into 'being' human.” Mark’s passion for guiding people to be the best leader they can be at home and work, combined with his deep knowledge and unique take on "authentic" leadership as a driver of business performance, has made MarkTwo's courses and books highly sought after in Australasia and Asia. Mark intends to help people be the best leaders they can be in order to improve their families, communities, businesses, nations and this planet. Over the last 20 years he has designed and facilitated both “train-the-trainer” advanced leadership courses as well as “assessthe-assessor” assessment courses for Australian 'Top 100' and American 'Fortune 500' companies in Australasia, USA, China, Singapore and India. “What I want now from this book is for people to gain insight within themselves and see how these levels of motivation affect their control. I want people to push aside illusions about leadership and what makes a good leader and discover that through breaking down some of these illusions, people can think better and different,” Mark said. “This is a guide to seeking the answers.” n

DIY Interior design ARTICLE FROM WWW.HOMEDESIGNDIRECTORY.COM.AU
W
hy can some people make their home look stylish, cosy or just plain brilliant when others, no matter how hard they try, simply make a mess of it? The answer is simple - they have not read this article and learned the rules! (Which are not complicated, nor difficult.) The four basic elements of interior design are: Light - the effects of natural and artificial light on interior spaces. Colour - how to select colours that go well together. Texture and pattern - how to add areas of visual interest in a space. Scale and balance - if the proportions are wrong, an interior space will look strange or uncomfortable. Planning your interior: Those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Here's what you have to do to avoid as many problems and pitfalls as possible: 1. Draw a rough floor plan of the space you are designing. The plan must be drawn to scale. Scaled graph paper can be purchased from your newsagency. 2. Create some cut-outs to-scale; e.g. kitchen cut-outs and bathroom cut-outs. 3. Move the cut-outs of the furniture and fixtures around the room until they are arranged in a manner you believe will work well without being crowded, hazardous or in conflict with windows and doors. You may have to sacrifice some items. 4. Decide on a colour scheme and then shop for paint. Remember that you can purchase sample pots before you buy, this is a lot cheaper than buying 20 litres of the wrong paint. The paints you sample will need to be applied onto differently oriented walls and assessed at different times of the day, it is only then that you should commit to a final colour. 5. Wall furnishing is back. Check out window coverings such as curtains, blinds and shutters; floor finishes including carpets, rugs and mats; lights for ambience, general purpose lighting, task lighting for work areas and feature lighting and furniture - don't forget about scale and balance. n

SERVING NORTH QUEEN S L AND
Balcony gardening STORY FROM WWW.YATES.COM.AU
W
ith more and more people moving to apartment living, there’s increasing interest in learning about balcony gardening. As with any type of gardening, it’s important to choose the right plant for the right spot, but there are some basic principles to follow that will help achieve success. Aspect and position Check to see how much sun the balcony receives. If there’s a lot of sun, you’ll be able to grow plants such as citrus (choose dwarf varieties), small vegetables, roses, hibiscus and geraniums. Apartments on the shady side will be better suited to foliage plants such as cordylines, dracaena, bamboos and, in frost-free areas, crotons and spathiphyllum. Morning sun positions suit gardenias, hydrangeas and leafy vegies such as baby lettuce. The most difficult position is likely to be facing due west. It will receive hot afternoon sun, often coupled with reflected heat from the wall. In this case, some screening may be helpful. Screens can also provide protection from strong winds.

Pots to choose Remember that the bigger the pot the easier it will be to look after the plant. Plants in larger pots take longer to heat up and dry out. But on a balcony you’ll have to consider the space available and the weight of the pot. Plastic pots are lighter in weight than terracotta or glazed pots, which makes them easier to move around when desired. They’re also selfwatering (i.e. they have a reserve of moisture in the base) which means that they’ll last longer between waterings and there’ll be less likelihood of water overflow. Potting mix Choose a quality potting mix but lighten the load by putting a layer of polystyrene balls in the base of the pot. Bean bag balls are a good suggestion for this layer. Mix some extra polystyrene balls or perlite through the potting mix itself, too. Watering Potting mixes dry out readily, so potted plants need to be regularly watered. Keep pots mulched with an organic layer. It’s important, too, to make satisfactory arrangements for the water run-off. If there are saucers under the pots, put a layer of pebbles or expanded terracotta balls in the saucer to lift the base of the pot above the collected water. Watch that drainage water doesn’t annoy the neighbours below or make the balcony slippery and unsafe. Fertilising Feed potted plants with slow or controlled release fertiliser a couple of times a year during the growing season. n

The streets of Emerald and the Central Highlands are peppered with pink after Central Highlands Auto launched their newly designed numberplate frames to help Cancer Council Queensland raise funds and awareness to beat breast cancer. Featuring the message “Proudly Supporting Cancer Council Queensland”, the pink plates frame the numberplate of each car sold, with Emerald’s Central Highlands Auto donating $20 per plate set to Cancer Council Queensland. Central Highlands Auto General Manager Michael Anstee said their new pink numberplate frames were an opportunity to support a cause that was close to the heart of their community. “It has long been a part of Craig Black’s business philosophy to demonstrate his commitment to the community by giving something back to our friends, neighbours and customers whose lives have been affected by adversity, in this case breast cancer,” Mr Anstee said. “We sell around one thousand cars each year, so during the next 12 months at $20 donation per car this will equate to a $20,000 donation to a very worthwhile cause.” For breast cancer information and support, visit www.cancerqld.org.au or call the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20. n

vanuatu A N I S L A N D PA R A D I S E
BY PATRICK MCELLIGOTT
hristmas was over, my workload had reduced and I needed to do something with my life and needed to relax. I noticed an advertisement in the Inflight Magazine about a seven-day cruise, the maximum number of days I could afford to take off work. The ship was the Pacific Dawn and the cruise, a sevenday tour out of Brisbane to the Vanuatu Islands. I found the name of the boat to be very appropriate. The various sunrises and early evening sunsets were absolutely magnificent, I actually took time out to smell the roses and enjoy their beauty. The ship itself catered to everything I could have ever wanted. The food was magnificent and the entertainment choices extravagant. The nightlife, if I so wished, was there for me to enjoy and everything was covered in the cost of my fare; no hidden costs unless I wanted to indulge in the cocktails or play at the Casino. The first two days we sailed on a calm sea, giving me a chance to familiarise myself with the ship, its crew and everything that was available. The first port of call was Lifou and I enjoyed a short shore excursion, a swim in the crystal clear waters of the island, a trip to vanilla house which was not only educational but a magnificent experience of the local culture in these Pacific islands. And then it was off to Port Vila, Vanuatus capital. We arrived early in the morning and as we looked over the bow of the ship we could see the markets and an extensive number of colourful natives waiting to greet us with crafts and products. Having done my research prior to boarding I chose a taxi, one which was recommended to me by a friend, and I headed off to view the island. We travelled through Port Vila in an easterly direction, the driver was a local native and as I prefer to get off the beaten track as much as possible, I asked him what it was like in his village. So he took us there and we were able to see first-hand how the locals lived and worked on the island. I must admit it was great to see how this simple life makes life so rich and enjoyable for them. Having shown me the other side of tourism, he was also very keen to show me his Islands special sights, and the first port of call was the Blue Lagoon, an inland lagoon made up of fresh water that was so blue. It was surrounded by forest and shrubbery right down to the water’s edge and the water was refreshingly chilling and absolutely magnificent. Lunch time was fast approaching and I wanted to taste the local foods. Being a Pacific island it was only natural that seafood would be on the menu so my guide drove me further around the island and showed me the beaches and beautiful scenery along the way. We stopped off at a restaurant on the banks of the sea and indulged in a fresh seafood lunch of magnificent proportions (caught that morning in the local bay). After lunch we headed to a nearby village to see some of the zoological culture; massive turtles being hand fed by the tourists; native carvings on display in the form of totem poles; the village of thatched huts and native art. I was also lucky enough to visit one of Vanuatu’s famous attractions, the magnificent cascade falls. I quickly realised that it was necessary for me to walk a distance into these falls but the atmosphere and trekking was just what the body needed after so much indulgence on board the ship. Upon my return to Port Vila, I indulged in magnificent shopping, buying some artefacts and crafts of Vanuatu; mementos to take home to remind me of this magnificent trip to this magnificent group of islands. n

oyota HiLux has long been one of Australia’s favourite Action Utility Vehicles. With a reputation for being an unbreakable workhorse, you can push it to the limit, but it keeps coming back for more. The VVT-i petrol or gutsy turbodiesel engines pack a real punch without compromising reliability or efficiency. With responsive handling, you’re always firmly in control, from tight corners in city streets to vast open deserts. HiLux is built to handle anything your location throws at it with its array of intelligent technologies. Big on safety it has an energyabsorbing front chassis structure and strong Safe-T-Cell, helping take impacts from all angles on the chin. ABS (Anti-skid Braking System) is standard
on all models and VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) in the SR5 Double-Cab 4x4 models helps with stability by automatically adjusting engine output and the braking force of each wheel when the vehicle experiences over steer or under steer during cornering. HiLux’s TRC function (Traction Control) controls the wheel spin, when starting or accelerating on slippery or uneven road
surfaces and the NVH (Noise Vibration and Harshness) shields you from whatever chaos is going on around you. With a clever mix of high tensile and anti-corrosion sheet steel, the body is as tough as they come, with a rigid design that takes the strain, whatever you load it with. It’s built to go the distance. Less wear and tear means less maintenance in the long-run, making the HiLux great value for money. The challenge with a HiLux is choosing from thirty-five variations. From 4x2 and 4x4 configurations, three different engines, which includes a 2.7 litre 4 cylinder, 4.0 litre V6 petrol engine and the turbocharged 3.0 litre diesel engine featuring Electronic Direct Injection, along with a choice of cab variants and eight different colours. n

MA is pleased to announce the class leading TTR250 is now more affordable than ever at just $5999 RRP inc GST. In fact this legendary air-cooled DOHC off road trail bike has never been this affordable since its introduction in 1993. TT-R250 is the choice for riders who prize real off road performance and light weight over the latest technical bling. Plus the TT-R250s legendary reliability is backed with a two year factory warranty. Enduro legend Geoff Ballard has owned TT-R250s since 1999 and can’t get enough of the sweet handling and practical four-stroke. He even scooped a gold medal at the 1999 ISDE riding a TTR250 with minimal modifications. Another Yamaha legend, Stefan Merriman, won the 250cc fourstroke class of the Thumper Nats on a TT-R250 too, so this model has genuine race pedigree. The four-valve twin cam engine produces a broad 33bhp that finds traction where more peaky powerplants find wheelspin. And its push-button electric start was the first to appear on a mainstream trail bike. n
