elcome aboard your flight today with Skippers. Our dedicated crew will do their very best to make your trip as comfortable

as possible. Skippers new integrated services covering the Coral Coast comprising of Kalbarri, Monkey Mia/Shark Bay and Carnarvon have been very well received by the travelling public and we are seeing record numbers particularly to Carnarvon. We have commenced an extra Monday afternoon return service to Carnarvon and have upgraded our Wednesday return service to Leonora/ Laverton to a Dash- 8 300 (50 pax) - both these flights are being well patronized. Perth Airport delays have all but gone with the runway work completed but then we have CHOGM which is causing some congestion for our flights and road ways around the airport. Once the dignitaries have departed, things should get back to normal. We have commenced an extension to our apron area in conjunction with the airport owners which should improve our arrival and departure capabilities. Skippers package holidays through Discover West Holidays have been well received incorporating all our destinations as well as those people coming to the city for work or pleasure. Our reservations system is now connected to Travel Fusion, one of the worlds largest travel agent booking systems enabling overseas travellers to book direct to all our destinations Skippers is proud to be providing services to the exciting new discoveries and mines such as Sandfire Resources which has accelerated its construction phase and the Tropicana joint venture which is about to enter its construction phase. Both of these are the largest discoveries in Western Australia for a long time. Skippers is also providing services to Onslow in support of BHP’s Macedon Oil and Gas Project which has just started its construction phase. Skippers continues to support the communities with sponsorship deals involving various activities at the destinations we service as well as enabling editorials to be included in the Inflight Magazine. We once again remind you that we have wireless internet that is available to our passengers in the Perth terminal, which is free of charge. Please enquire upon checking in. Our Broome base is continuing to grow and support the mining and resource industries in the area as well as many ad-hoc charters. Once again, enjoy your journey with us today. We feel privileged to provide this service and look forward to you flying with us again soon.

Mangar Chuote leads local children in some event training at the Carnarvon inter-school athletics carnival

Y

oung athletes in Carnarvon may be the key to Australia’s track and field success, according to one of the state’s leading coaches. Lindsay Bunn, who visited Carnarvon in September to conduct coaching clinics and help to set up an athletics competition and coaching program, said he had seen tremendous untapped talent in the region. “I would say that athletes in this area, and in many areas of regional WA, could provide many future international athletes,” Perth-based Bunn said during a break at the regional primary schools competition. “The kids up here are tremendously talented and I believe it’s because they grow up tougher than they do in the city. “They have the benefit of growing up in the outdoors without many of the distractions city kids have. “We had one lad the other day who ran 100 metres barefoot in less than 11 seconds - that’s phenomenal.” This was Bunn’s fifth visit to Carnarvon, where he helped launch a regional athletics program. His visit has been made possible by a partnership between the Department of Sport and Recreation and Skippers Aviation. He was being assisted by local parents and former runner Paul Mullane, who helped organise a community meeting in August. “I was keen to get some sort of athletics programs up and running, as we haven’t had anything for six or seven years, and all this

talent is going to waste,” said Mullane. The new athletics program will be different to anything which has previously operated. There are no forms, no fees and competitions only take place once a month. It’s a combination of ingredients from successful programs in Bunbury, Karratha and Jamaica. “Parents are time-poor today, so it’s no good trying to have weekly competition as we’ve always done,” said Bunn. “We need the parents involved, and we will assist them to coach. “I also have elements of a simplified teaching program, which is used in Jamaica. “The other similarity with Jamaica, which produces athletes like Usain Bolt, is that their kids come off grass tracks and grow up tough, too.” Other sports like athletics also have the

opportunity to source Skippers flights to assist the development of their sport through the Department of Sport and Recreation Regional Flight Assistance Scheme which was recently launched in partnership with Skippers Aviation. The Skippers sponsorship will help leading coaches travel to the Gascoyne and also provide travel for talented young athletes to compete in Perth. “Skippers will play a significant role in building the capacity of sport and recreation in the Gascoyne region,” said Department of Sport and Recreation Director General, Ron Alexander. For further information on the athletics program being run, please contact Lindsay Bunn on 0412 379 802 or Paul Mullane on 0419 931 044.

City P

erth is a city for sailing. When Fremantle made its mark on the world during the 1987 America’s Cup, it was no coincidence Perth gained regard as a premier sailing destination and this year, the city is set to capture everyone's attention once again as it prepares to host the 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing

10

The Perth 2011 Sailing World Championships will take place from Saturday December 3 to Sunday December 18

World Championships. A world title, 80 nations, an anticipated 5,000 visitors - including 1,400 of the best Olympic class sailors - and the chance to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics, makes this one of the largest international sporting events in Western Australian history. In fact the Perth 2011 ISAF

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

Sailing World Championships will be four times larger than the 2012 London Olympic Games sailing regatta for which it is the pre-qualifying event, and three times the size of the 1987 America’s Cup defence. For spectators, visitors and the local community, the event represents much more

than sailing with a full line up of entertainment both on and off the water. Fremantle will celebrate the ISAF Sailing World Championships with a host of public activities centred on the Esplanade Park in the Worlds’ ‘Village,’ close to the sailing action on Bather Bay. Live music, theatre, fashion, international cooking demonstrations and art exhibitions will make Perth 2011 an extraordinary event for the entire community.

The Perth 2011 Sailing World Championships is expected to generate approximately $41 million for the Western Australian economy and has strong backing from both the Western Australian and Federal Governments, as well as substantial commercial sponsorship. It will also reach the world through live national and international television. Perth 2011 Event Director and America’s Cup veteran, John Longley said sailing is set to become a grandstand sport in Perth. “Bathers Bay at Fremantle is just like an amphitheatre, with great views of the boats from the South Mole, Bathers Beach and Challenger Harbour,” he said. Spectators will be able to take in the sailing action up close with the final medal races contested on a course bringing the yachts just metres from the main vantage points lining Bathers Bay in Fremantle. n

Sailing the State STAY in one of the best locations in Perth affordable accommodation in a million dollar setting. View to Perth city, across the Swan River. Photo courtesy of Tourism WA.

Western Australia’s 12,000 kilometres of coastline and myriad of tranquil rivers and inlets makes it the perfect frontier for sailing and cruising holidays.

P

erth is blessed with more days of sunshine than any other Australian capital, making yachting a popular pastime on the sparkling waters of the Swan River, where the gentle water and gusty sea breezes create ideal conditions. Make sure to keep a look out for the local pod of dolphins who call these waters home. Yacht clubs dot the shoreline from Perth to Fremantle, and in the summer months local sailors compete in twilight sailing competitions. If you’re not a sailor but love getting out on the water, head to Fremantle where local company, Starsand Yacht Charters runs twilight sailing cruises, as well as Rottnest Island, whale watching and overnight sailing expeditions. (www.starsand.com.au) For an adventure of a lifetime, join the crew aboard the historic Leeuwin II on the seas off Fremantle. The iconic 55-metre tall ship offers three hour short sail experiences where participants take part in ship activities such as hauling lines or climbing the bowsprit; as well as longer voyages for youth and adults. (www.sailleeuwin.com) If you’re looking for something a little more low-key but still active, hire a 4.5-metre catamaran on the South Perth foreshore, where you can feast your eyes on a million-dollar view of the city skyline as a fresh breeze whisks you along the river. (www.funcats.com.au) Outside of the Perth region you will find sailing and cruising adventures along the Western Australian coast. One of the most spectacular and remote cruising destinations is the Kimberley in the state’s far north. One of the world’s last true wilderness areas, here you can explore untamed islands, collect oysters on deserted beaches, croc-spot and take a dip in a cascading waterfall on a luxury cruise. Departing from the tropical pearling port of Broome or the small town of Wyndham, there are a number of lavish sailing boats trawling this stunning coastline during the season from April to September. (www.australiasnorthwest.com) On the mid north coast from World Heritage Listed Shark Bay to World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef, it is an aquatic playground - dolphins, dugongs, sea turtles, manta rays and schools of colourful fish. See them on a cruise, or take a dip in the aquamarine waters. Taking a cruise and then swimming with the gentle giant of the ocean, the mighty whale shark, is one of the most spectacular reasons to visit Ningaloo Reef each year from April to July. (www.australiascoralcoast.com) In the south west of the state, set sail on a private charter, where you can hire a yacht, learn the ropes or simply kick back and enjoy a skippered sail around one of the safest and most picturesque cruising grounds in WA - Geographe Bay - and gateway to the famous Margaret River Wine Region. Here you can also take in the annual Humpback Whale migration on a whale watching tour, or canoe down one of the tranquil rivers. Thrill Seekers, Historians and Foodies Flock to

Geraldton L

ocated around four hours drive north of Perth, Geraldton is a great short break destination, offering beautiful beaches to the west, rolling hills and breakaway ranges to the east, plenty of activities and attractions and a range of accommodation. Situated on Champion Bay, Geraldton is one of Australia’s top destinations for water sports enthusiasts, who visit from near and far on the promise of consistent summer winds, providing ideal conditions for yachting, wind surfing and surfing. Fishing and diving are also popular pursuits in this part of the world. Fishing enthusiasts and divers alike should not miss a visit to the Abrolhos Islands located off the coast of Geraldton. The Abrolhos Islands form one of Western Australia’s most unique marine areas showcasing eerie ship wrecks and an abundance of marine life. Divers will delight in seeing everything from rays, to lobster and

17

Issue 18

clown fish. Many of the most spectacular areas lie in shallow water near the shore and are just as easily enjoyed with a snorkel and mask. Scenic flights and boat charters are available from Geraldton. Closer to Geraldton, the South Tomi wreck is just three nautical miles from Geraldton and is another popular destination for divers. Originally a Patagonian tooth fish fishing vessel, which was later confiscated and scuttled in 2004, the South Tomi dive wreck is now home to an abundance of marine life including an array of coral and schools of fish. Although the coastline is a major drawcard for this growing city, Geraldton also offers a range of other activities and attractions, catering for people of all ages and interests. The city has recently undergone a major transformation, so if you haven’t been to Geraldton for a few years it’s well worth taking a fresh look.

“Situated on Champion Bay, Geraldton is one of Australia’s top destinations for water sports enthusiasts, who visit from near and far on the promise of consistent summer winds, providing ideal conditions for yachting, wind surfing and surfing.” Walk trails, interpretive signs and landscaped gardens now line the picturesque beachfront, while more alfresco dining establishments and shopping outlets grace the streets overlooking the foreshore. The recently redeveloped foreshore offers white sandy beaches, a large playground and a water fun park, while just a few hundred metres away, the WA Museum Geraldton provides a fascinating insight into the region’s rich natural, social and maritime history. A poignant reminder of the region’s maritime history is the HMAS Sydney II Memorial, which commemorates the loss of 645 Australian soldiers who met their fate in a World War II naval battle in 1941 soon after the ship’s last stop in Geraldton. After 66 years of mystery, the wreck of the German vessel, the Kormoran was found

18

Issue 18

in March 2008 and a few days later the Sydney was found approximately 250 kilometres from Shark Bay. This magnificent memorial located on Mount Scott overlooks the city and features a silver dome of 645 seagulls to represent each sailor lost in this war time disaster. A wall displays photographs of the HMAS Sydney II and the names of her crew. Join a guided tour to learn more about this notorious World War II battle and the dedicated search for the wreck. The Point Moore Lighthouse is another indicator of the region’s maritime history. This bold, red and white striped landmark has become something of a Geraldton landmark. Overlooking the ocean at Point Moore, the lighthouse stands 34 metres tall and its beam can be seen 26 kilometres out to sea. The structure is the only one of its kind in Western Australia.

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

Interpretive signage about the lighthouse’s interesting history can be found at its base. Geraldton’s coastline is not only rich in maritime history and a major tourism drawcard, it continues to be one of the region’s key assets. If you’re keen to gain first hand insight into the region’s lucrative fishing industry or would like to drop a line or crab pot yourself, visit Fishermen's Wharf for a taste of one of Geraldton’s most important economic drivers. This commercial boat harbour is a hive of activity during the western rock lobster season, when around 300 boats haul in pots of this valuable delicacy. Join a guided tour of the Geraldton Fishermen’s Cooperative Processing Factory between November and August to learn more about this multi-million dollar industry. Although it’s one of the most valuable food commodities on the menu, western rock lobster is far from the only delicacy originating from the Geraldton region. Foodies flock from near and far to taste fresh dhufish and a plethora of other seafood, such as snapper, groper, trout, prawns and scallops. Head to the Farmers’ Markets held each Saturday from 8am to noon at Maitland Park to stock up on local fresh fruit and vegetables, olives, preserves, cheeses and yoghurt. Alternatively, why not take a scenic drive inland of Geraldton to the Chapman Valley, which offers a range of delectable local produce and lovely views of the Moresby Ranges. Enjoy a glass of wine and bite to eat at the winery or visit the lavender farm for a delicious meal and to purchase lavender body products. On your way back to Perth, you simply cannot drive past Greenough without stopping. Learn about the area’s interesting heritage at the Central Greenough Historic Settlement, discover uncrowded beaches and enjoy a walk along the scenic river. In fact, there’s enough to see and do in Greenough to justify spending a night or two. n

Uncovering a Picture of North West History: The Canning Stock Route Project

O

ne of the world's last true wilderness areas, Australia’s North West can only be described as rugged, wild and beautiful. Venturing inland from the stretching white coastal sands to red earth country exposes extraordinary rock formations, magnificent waterfalls and expansive desert. As the sun beats down on this outback frontier, it’s hard to imagine a history as rich as the magnificent landscape, however this very history has been captured to tell a vivid tale, stories previously unrecorded from the remote desert lands of Western Australia, from an Aboriginal perspective in an exhibition called ‘Yiwarra Kuju,’ or ‘one road’ – The Canning Stock Route Project. In the early 1900s, an ambitious attempt was made to drive cattle from the stations of the Kimberly through the Western Desert Region to markets in the South of Western Australia. Aboriginal guides were used to locate local waters during the surveying of the stock route. The Canning Stock Route project is a landmark cultural and artistic endeavour, with some of Western Australia’s leading contemporary Aboriginal artists contributing their knowledge to a rich cultural repository that explores the history and cultures of the Canning Stock Route. The project began as a partnership between Perth-based cultural organisation FORM, and

nine remote Aboriginal art and cultural centres in the north of the state with direct connections to the stock route regions. It depicts the history of the century-old, 2,000km stock route that runs from Wiluna to Halls Creek, crossing three deserts along the way. The exhibition that resulted from the project, ‘Yiwarra Kuju,’ is a joint initiative of the National Museum of Australia and FORM, and is an extraordinary blend of paintings, cultural artefacts, photography, oral history and film, created by Aboriginal artists and an intercultural team of emerging Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal curators and filmmakers. Yiwarra Kuji is on display at the Perth Convention and exhibition centre during CHOGM

(October 24 to 30) before being opened to the public for a free, four week season from November 2 to 27, 2011. The exhibition was shown at the National Museum of Australia for six months, closing in January this year. It was the most successful exhibition in the history of the Museum. The nine art centres across the North West encompass the Martumili Artists (Newman, Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu, Kunawarritji, Nullagine),Yulparija Artists (Bidyadanga), Mangkaja Arts Resource Agency (Fitzroy Crossing), Ngurra Artists (Ngumpan and Wangkatjungka), Warlayirti Artists (Balgo, Mulan and Billiluna), Papunya Tula Artists (Kiwirrkurra), Kayili Artists (Patjarr) and the Birriliburu Artists Tjukurba Gallery (Wiluna). n

Revovations: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly By Fran Sidoti from savingsguide.com.au

I

f you see people walking down the street, looking like zombies, feverishly comparing the colours of tiles as they wander the halls of Bunnings, chances are you’re looking at another casualty in the renovation war. Here’s why spending money, and spending it on the right things, is a necessity.

Practical, Not Pretty I spent the best part of my childhood in a house

22

Issue 18

that was being renovated. I had family breakfast with builders and plumbers and painters until I was about 12. It was a mammoth task my parents undertook, and well worth it now. But the things that cost lots of money were not always the ones that were obvious to the eye. Insulation, grading- they’re not hot, and they’re not pretty. No one’s going to comment on them as they walk through your home, as they would a new kitchen or beautifully restored old fireplace - but they

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

are a necessity. Making those hard calls will not only improve the re-sale value of the house, but will make it a nicer place to live in for the years you do remain there. Ignoring a leaky roof and renovating the sun room instead might seem like fun, but is a financial disaster waiting to happen.

The Bad There are trends in renovation, as there are in any undertaking. Trends that are written off by this

year’s experts (and potentially every year’s experts) include: a fireplace in the corner. For centuries, people put fireplaces in the middle of a wall. For a reason. It immediately throws all proportions of a room out, and makes it look unappetizing. For those with delusions of grandeur- it’s suggested that Grecian columns and spiral staircases are vetoed. Take it from someone with Greek bloodcolumns only work in ancient settings. And spiral staircases only work in fairytales. Having a house that’s easily accessible and comfortable is far more important than one that looks like Rapunzel is at home. Ditto internal French doors that open onto a blip of a room- French doors are meant to open onto impressive rooms and the whole effect will be lost if it’s a room full of dowdy couches and the telly.

Limited Funds If you have limited funds, go with what you know works. As advised in Globe and Mail, invest in well-built structure, good quality windows and appliances that’ll last for 50 years as opposed to flashy ones that break when you breathe too heavily on them. Know your own habits, and ways in which to best accommodate them. A walk-in pantry for the big cook, or an independent bench top for the kitchen for those who like to have dinner parties.

How To Avoid Expensive Home Repairs Give your house an audit. Walk around and list all the things that concern you- from the things that just need to be fixed through to the things you would desperately love to change. If you know what repairs you will need to make, it will be easier to start saving for them. Have an emergency fund and a maintenance budget- the more you can fix now, the more money you will save on it later. Don’t get DIY if you’re not comfortable- sometimes spending the $200 on a professional will save you an immense amount of money. And always look up- a happy roof is a happy home. n

Miners and Vitamin D Deficiency

Minimise your Risk By Nereda Wills, naturopath from Sun and Earth Organics

A

larmingly, studies have shown that up to 97 per cent of Australians are Vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in the health of your bones and muscles, your immune system and your cardiovascular system. The main source of Vitamin D actually comes from sunlight, so you can see why those who work underground are at such risk.

24

Issue 18

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

There is a huge amount of research going into Vitamin D at the moment and so far, a deficiency has been linked to the following health problems: • Osteoporosis • Increased risk of falls and fractures in the elderly due to poor muscle strength and bone density • Autoimmune diseases • Cardiovascular disease • High blood pressure • Type 2 diabetes complications • Increased cancer risk • Poor immune system function Vitamin D plays an important role in protecting your bones, as they require vitamin D to absorb calcium and make them strong. Studies show that people with low levels of vitamin D have lower bone density or bone mass. Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to increased allergies, colds and lung infections so since we get so much of it from sunshine, you can now see why these conditions are more common in winter. So how can you get enough Vitamin D? Dietary sources include oily fish and organic egg yolks. If you can’t consume these foods a few times a week, you can take a daily Vitamin D3 supplement from your health food shop. Sun cream will block 99 per cent of your vitamin D absorption from the sun, so make sure you get some daily unprotected exposure, but of course make sure you don’t get burnt! Moderate sun exposure is healthy, but burnt skin increases melanoma risk. The Australian Cancer Council recommends that during summer, majority of people can maintain adequate vitamin D levels from a few minutes of exposure to sunlight on their face, arms and hands or the equivalent area of skin on either side of the peak UV periods (10am to 3pm) on most days of the week. In winter in the southern parts of Australia, where UV radiation levels are less intense, people may need about two to three hours of sunlight spread over a week to maintain adequate vitamin D levels. n

Couples in the Mines As many employees of the mining industry know, lengthy time away from your partner can certainly take its toll emotionally - but nowadays, working in the industry doesn’t necessarily mean you have to leave your partner at home as more and more couples seek to work together at the same mine site. Angie Wilcocks, Psycologist for Mining Family Matters (miningfm.com.au) delves a little deeper into the topic of Couple in the Mines.

W

orking in the mining industry can mean different things to different families, depending on the way their work/ life balance is structured. Some couples base themselves in a city or large town while one partner works away. Some relocate to the nearest mining town. And yet another choice is both partners doing FIFO/DIDO – sharing the same donga on the same roster on the same site for the same company. The most obvious benefit is spending lots of time together – which might sound great in theory, but naturally has some pitfalls! Most couples on a joint FIFO roster seem to share a donga - and there are certainly issues that can arise from living together in a tiny space!

27

Issue 18

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

The extent to which couples can manage this arrangement probably depends on how similar their living habits are. Most couples are fairly compatible with day-to-day habits and activities. Really successful couples negotiate around their differences. We know that individuals differ in lots of ways: how tidy they are; how much TV they like to watch; how much sleep they need; and whether or not they make noises as they eat. In a 'normal' environment, couples can find space to just be themselves without bothering the other person too much. In a donga, even seemingly small differences can make for unbearable relationship stress, and grow into much bigger issues than they otherwise would. For example, if your partner

wants/needs to watch TV late into the night (and you don’t) this becomes a problem when you are sharing a single room. Couples with differing habits really need to work hard on compromise – set and stick to clear ground rules (even as simple as deciding five nights when the TV can be left on and five when it goes off ). Another pitfall is allowing work to dominate your thinking and conversations. Living together on site, working with the same people and doing the same (or similar) roles can contribute to this. While bitching about work might seem like a fun thing to do at the end of a long day, it ultimately won't add anything constructive or positive to your life or relationship. If your partner wasn't with you on site, there is no way they would listen to endless

complaints about work and colleagues – and this is a good thing! It’s a good idea to limit work conversations to 10 minutes or so at the end of the day. Yet another common source of disagreement in FIFO families, including those who work together, is how time off, or R&R time, is spent. This might seem a little surprising. You'd think that couples who work together would have a good understanding of the stresses related to the FIFO lifestyle and would agree about how time at home should be spent. This is often not the case. Because you work away together, friends and family might think you don't need to spend time together when you’re home – and this can lead to unrealistic demands during R&R. They need to remember that you’ve both been working hard and that you haven’t had quality time together. For the sake of a healthy relationship, you need to say ‘no’ to family and friends sometimes, and perhaps introduce set days for particular tasks or seeing particular people. It is really important that you spend time together as a couple when you are at home. Working on a project (a garden or a house) or sharing a hobby definitely helps to keep couples connected and this is really, really important for couples who work together. Couples who spend a lot of time together don't necessarily know each other any better or communicate better than those who spend a lot of time apart. In fact, there is a real danger of complacency, with the assumption being that you are close and connected just because you are physically together a lot of the time. You can easily (but incorrectly) assume your partner knows what is going on for you emotionally because he is there in the same environment. If we assume this, we won't bother telling him/ her verbally – and this puts undue pressure on the partner and the relationship. No matter how much time we spend with someone or how much we love them, it is very important to remember that they can’t read our minds. Your partner can't know with any certainty what you are thinking and feeling, unless you tell them! Living and working together can make communication a little tricky. Getting the balance right will probably require some practice – no-one wants to “communicate about the relationship” every minute of the day and we certainly don't need to tell our partner every thought and feeling! It's more about making an effort to verbally tell your partner how you’re feeling, rather than assuming they “just know” or “should know”. An example of this is coming back to the donga, exhausted after a hard day at work. You're grumpy and not in the mood to talk about anything. You just want to go to bed. If your partner wasn't there with you, you would send a text or make a quick call, explain your mood, tell them you love them,

and leave it at that. Your partner back home would then be clear that you're not grumpy with them. BUT, if your partner is with you in the donga at the end of your bad day, you’re more likely to assume they know you're grumpy (and why) and not bother with the niceties. This does your relationship a major disservice. Your partner might take your grumpy behaviour to mean that you are upset with them, adding to stress and tension for them and the relationship. Talking honestly to your partner goes a long way to creating a positive and trusting relationship. Some couples I know even add humour to this by having a funny code word, like “pina colada” as shorthand for saying “I've had a bad day, I'm tired and grumpy and don't want to talk to you, no offence, I love you very much and hope tomorrow is better”. Try it. Quick tips • Watch your conversations, make sure the amount of time you spend talking about work and/or colleagues is limited • Aim to have shared interests when at home • Work on communication, don't assume you partner knows what you are thinking and feeling. Let him/her know! • Be upfront about the challenges of sharing a donga and look for solutions rather than blame • Problem-solve any differences about how R&R time is spent

• •

Don't become complacent about your relationship just because you spend a lot of time together Two great books on improving relationships are The Five Languages of Love by Gary Chapman and ACT with Love by Russ Harris.

On a final note: as with any major relationship decision, it is important to weigh up possible pros and cons before starting to live and work together on site. Talking to others in the same situation and trying to problem-solve any potential problems in advance is a great idea, and I always recommend giving any new lifestyle an initial timeframe to test out whether it works for you and your relationship. n

Want to GET AHEAD in Your Career?

Top tips to stand out from the pack

T

he mining and resource industry isn’t much different to any other when it comes to standing out from the pack. Showing your willingness to learn, having a positive attitude and staying away from workplace politics can be applied to almost any sector within the workplace so here are our top five tips for getting ahead in your job.

5. Willingness to Learn Show your eagerness to keep up with the latest systems, be willing to go along to any training courses on offer and take a keen interest in upcoming changes within the company.

popular girls bitching about everyone else, at university it was the high achievers sniggering at those that didn’t do as well, and in the workplace, the group of workers who get together at lunch to discuss everything that’s wrong with the company and how they could improve it if they were in charge. The best thing you can do if you want to get ahead in your job is stay well away. You almost never hear of this kind of employee climbing the ladder (because they’re too busy whinging about how they could build a better one).

There’s nothing worse than the kind of employee who will turn their nose up at new systems because ‘the old one works just fine.’ The world changes and it’s important you can be flexible and do so as well.

The same goes for touchy subjects and gossip. Some people naturally just want to stir the pot. No good can come of it, and if you become chummy with this kind of gossiper, soon enough you’ll be the right in the middle of it all and you won’t even know how you got there.

4. Respect for the Company

2. Achievement

So it may sound a little obvious, but you’d be surprised how many employees you hear nowadays whinging and whining about the systems in place and the way the company does things. At the end of the day, if you don’t truly like the company you’re working for, how can you expect to get the best results? And to truly like a company, you need to not focus on the things you don’t like about it, but the things you do. This ties in heavily with point 1.

3. Stay Away from the Politics Every society has them; at school it was the

30

Issue 18

It may not be rocket science, but be the best you can be at your job. There used to be a fear that if you’re the best at your job, you will never be moved elsewhere (as in upwards) because no one will ever be able to replace you. That’s complete rubbish. An employer will soon realise who the high achievers are in the workplace and reward them for it – it’s common sense.

1. Positivity A big one, and you’ll notice there’s a little of this in all of the points mentioned above. Basically, if you’re positive and happy in your role it will show and it will rub off.

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

Focus on the good things in your current job and not the bad and the same goes for the company, your co workers, your boss – the list goes on. Soon enough, your positivity will be noticed, not only by your employer, but co workers as well. People will be eager to work with you and perhaps they’ll even make a comment to the boss about how great you are to work with. You’ll be recognised for having a great attitude and rewarded for doing so – positivity only breeds positivity. It’s only onwards and upwards from there!

Steps Toward a Happier Life By Kelly maniatis, registered psychologist and member of the australian psychological society

L

AITP E

ast issue, I spoke about the three steps to achieving resilience in the workplace: improving health and well-being, managing workloads and building happiness. Now, let’s discuss some of these steps in more detail.

stablished back in 2001, AITP Pty Ltd celebrated its ten year anniversary recently and in today’s tough economic climate, that’s certainly an achievement. According to AITP’s Business Manager, Melissa McCann, the company’s success and longevity can be put down to a number of things. ”We still stand out today for a number of reasons including the fact that we offer limited numbers in our classes,” Melissa said. “This enables more one on one time with the trainer and also gives us more time to spend with the students for follow ups.” But the company’s point of difference doesn’t stand only with its personal approach to training, AITP also keeps up to date with the latest in technology. “We try to keep as up to date with things as we can,” Melissa said. “For example, in our Cert 4 Occupational Health and Safety Course, we have Project Canary which is a program that simulates a mine site.” “It gives the learners a real life situation on a mine site and there are different scenarios they have to work through as a team.” For more information on the company including courses offered, visit their website at aitp.com.au n

When it comes to health and wellbeing, make sure you have a health care check up; don’t neglect diet and hydration and exercise. It’s also important to manage your stress levels – remember, life is bigger and richer than your job alone. Another important element is to keep your mind alert and flexible - the mind needs exercise just like the rest of your body. As for managing workload, asses your personal rhythms - are you sharpest in the morning or the afternoon? Schedule tasks that require your greatest brain power. You should also invest time in planning. Establish your goals for the year, the quarter, the month, the week and each day. This allows you to be proactive and not simply reactive with your time. Take ten minutes at the end of each day to plan for the next. Something else to remember is to include only as much on your to-do-list as you can actually accomplish in a day. Carrying things over from one day to the next contributes to the feelings of always being behind. Be realistic about the amount of time a task actually takes. Underestimating can result in over-scheduling the day and feeling frustrated about what’s left undone. Something that I feel is very important is to each day schedule something that is fun or inspires you. Giving yourself moments of enjoyment keeps the work from becoming a drudgery. In the next issue, I’ll discuss the final step toward achieving resilience in life: building happiness. n

Bouncer Sports believes that playing team sports also provides a positive environment for social interaction, friendship and motivation in addition to personal health and fitness. Bouncer Sports understands the difficulties experienced by people working on a Fly In Fly out / Drive In Drive out (FIFo/DIDo) roster to participate in weekly scheduled sporting events whilst on rest break back in Perth. Sporting fixtures are typically programmed for an afternoon or an evening but not during the day making it difficult for people working on a FIFo/ DIDo roster to play team sports. Bouncer Sports plans to kick off a day time indoor sports competition which caters specifically for people working on an 8d/6d, 2w/1w, 3w/1w and 4w/1w roster during the week commencing 6th February 2012 for the following: • Mens / Ladies Basketball (5 players per side) • Mens Cricket (6 players per side) • Ladies / Mixed Netball (7 players per side) • Mens / Ladies Soccer (5 players per side)

PYBAR Mining Services installing ground support for the commencement of a new portal in the pit wall at Red October

Are you a Geologist or Field Technician Wanting ROCKSOLID Training? New to the industry, fresh out of university or simply in need of some rock-solid, hands-on-training to further your career? Then Digirock’s comprehensive five day, industry recognised Geological Best Practice Series is for you.

Saracen

...making the move from open-cut to underground

S

aracen has chosen Orange-based mining and civil contractors, PYBAR to establish the mine at their Red October site. With a focus on safety, quality and fast track underground development, PYBAR is proud to have been awarded the contract. The project involves site establishment, decline and level development, ground support, production drilling, tele-remote bogging and all haulage at the new underground mine with a start-up team in excess of 35 people. Saracen Mineral Holdings is one of Australia’s up and coming mining companies with its assets spanning the world-class mining district of South Laverton in Western Australia, supported by the infrastructure of the Carosue Dam operations. Focus over the next 12 months is to develop the underground potential of its Red October, Deep South, Whirling Dervish and Porphyry deposits. Red October is located approximately 1000kms north-east of Perth and a trial mine is being planned to confirm the geological interpretation and metallurgical properties for the proposed underground operation. While this project may represent a small part of Saracen’s reserve inventory, its potential higher grade can make a significant difference to the company’s production profile. Utilising their extensive fleet of equipment, PYBAR was able to quickly and easily resource the project and have it mobilised to site. This project is PYBAR’s sixth in Western Australia and confirms their position in Western Australia as an established mining contractor. PYBAR looks forward to developing a ‘one team’ approach, working in partnership with Saracen to deliver a successful project for Red October and future sites. n

A Digirock geologist at work in the field

D

eveloped by experienced senior exploration geologists, the course demystifies the roles, responsibilities and terminology of exploration drilling in the real world and combines theory with practical demonstrations and techniques. The course is broken into five modules; The Role of the Geologist, Drilling Methods and Safety, Introductory Sampling and Assaying, Drillhole Data Collection and Core Processing, and Land Access and Cultural Heritage. On completion of the five modules, geologists will have the knowledge and skills to apply best-practice principals to their work and supervise drilling programs confidently, safely and effectively. As part of Digirock’s commitment to quality, a session on regolith geochemistry is part of “The Role of the Geologist” module. The session includes a practical logging exercise that involves examining drill chips through various regolith terrains with the assistance of Senior Geochemist, Michelle Carey of ioGlobal. This important addition ensures that young geologists can apply the correct techniques when logging regolith profiles in exploration drilling. Places are still available for the final course of the year held at the Rose and Crown Hotel from the 14th to 18th November. Numbers are limited and filling quickly so be sure to confirm your attendance and head into the New Year with a fresh outlook and broadened knowledge of your role. For more information on the Geological Best Practice Training Series, contact Training Manager, Helen Tanner at helen@digirock.com.au, visit www.digirock.com.au or call (08) 9477 3747. n

Take the

FIRST STEP in Purchasing Life Insurance

A

ccording to new research from Choosi.com.au, 57 per cent of people in Australia are not covered by any life insurance. Of those that are currently covered, nearly two thirds (64 per cent) feel that they don’t have adequate protection. Overall this means that 85 per cent of people across the country have a life insurance problem. What’s more, one in four people that don’t have any life insurance have a mortgage and/or dependents. This means that should anything unexpected happen, they are potentially leaving their families exposed. So why are Australians so under-insured? The main issues with purchasing life insurance include finding the insurance terms “difficult to understand” and “confusing”, and that they are unsure which policy would cover their needs. Most of the time, they just don’t know

43

Issue 18

where to start. There’s a new website that might help though. Choosi.com.au, is a new comparison service that helps Australians compare, select and choose an insurance policy offering three simple tips to help guide you in making the most important decision you can make for your loved ones – after all, the age old saying remains true today – it’s better to be safe, than sorry.

1. Don’t delay Life is full of uncertainty and as much as we don’t like to think about it, you just never know when something may happen to you or your spouse. The last thing you need at those times is added financial stress. Don’t put off investigating life insurance, it’s not worth taking the chance - go online, it only takes a few minutes.

2. Shop around and compare As with choosing any significant item, it’s worth shopping around for life insurance to make sure you get the right policy. There are some great life insurance deals out there and these days it’s easier than ever to compare them, particularly online with services like Choosi.com.au.

3. Compare like for like Make sure that the cover and features are similar for the products you are comparing. Each policy has different benefits and it’s important to understand the differences when comparing premiums to ensure you are genuinely receiving good value.

4. Consider your circumstances It’s important to assess your situation to know what type and how much life insurance you need. Factors to consider include your mortgage, bill payments, outstanding debts, ongoing living expenses and your dependents. Each person has different life insurance needs and it’s important to know what yours are to find the right cover.

“one in four people that don’t have any life insurance have a mortgage and/or dependents. This means that should anything unexpected happen, they are potentially leaving their families exposed.”

5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions If you don’t understand the terms and conditions, ask! It’s better to figure out what the fine print means now, rather than when you need to make a claim – you need to be confident in the cover. Save all your correspondence with your provider so you can refer to them anytime. Always read the product disclosure statement (PDS) before you buy. n

So you’re making the money... But do you have a financial plan?

BY ALEX WILSON FROM SAVINGSGUIDE.COM.AU

H

ave you put much thought into where you want to be (financially) in five years time? Many people tend to live for the here and now and although that may seem like a pretty general assumption, it rings true when we see the amount of consumer debt and lack of take up for financial planning in Australia. John Lennon had a wonderful quote when he said: “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” Let’s have a look at what a five year plan could potentially look like.

YOU ONLY HAVE LIMITED TIME TO MAKE MONEY Every time I am watching the news, some NRL or Rugby Union player is defecting from their team to go and play overseas. Why do they do this and what does it have to do with a financial plan? The answer is simple. You only have a finite period of time to make money in life. It’s no different in rugby, except when you are a rugby player, you have until about the age of 30 to make your fortune. This means that everyday you get closer to the age of retirement, you have one less day to earn money to support both yourself and your loved ones into the future.

46

Issue 18

Your plan should use this as the basis for accumulating wealth as it really frames it well – you only live once and there are no second chances when it comes to how much money you have to retire with. Though remember John Lennon’s quote when doing this - you don’t want to only plan for the future and not live for the now.

EVERY DOLLAR YOU WASTE IS IRRETRIEVEABLE Further from the point above, if you only have a limited time to earn money, every dollar you spend is $1 off the lump sum you will earn in your life. Yes, spending is necessary - but it might make you think twice about buying your 3 cafe quality coffees a day for $10.

A FINANCIAL PLAN IS ABOUT GROWTH A good five year financial plan needs to have the idea of growth heavily embedded. If you are young, you want more money. If you are older, you still want more money but you’re probably less able to risk how it is you go about making those returns. Set a clear goal of how much you want to grow

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

your wealth within five years. This will be your driving force. An even better financial plan is about growth and defending wealth. There is no point having the right mindset - growing your money - and then wasting it or risking it too heavily. You want to defend your money, which means diversifying where you invest, save and spend. Yes you can own some shares, but consider some cash savings, extra super contributions and more. You want your money protected from one foul swoop on any given industry or sector.

WITHOUT A PLAN, YOUR FINANCES WILL FAIL Set really clear goals on where you want your finances to be in five years. Aim to maximise your earnings, minimise your wastage, find ways to grow what money you do have and then ensure you defend it to stop your hard work going to waste. A plan can be as simple as five written goals on a piece of paper on the fridge. It could also be a contract you write up and sign to help yourself to it. You should start a plan right away - it will at least get you thinking about your five year goals and financials at the end of that period. For more personal financing tips, visit

i all. Pleased to meet you all (well, nearly meet you all). My name is Paul McKinley, and I am the Director/ Proprietor of Finance 48.

We're a finance broker that specialises in funding cars, bikes, boats, and equipment. That's all we do. We don't do mortgages, debt consolidations, or raise working venture capital. We specialise. We do a lot for guys in the mining sector, especially guys (and girls) on FIFO. They love their toys, and so do I. With a motorbike (Boulevard M109), Jet ski (Yamaha SHO), and a Boat (Four Winns S215), my wife says "that's enough!" More to the point, I share your passion. We can arrange the finance, all insurances, and mechanical warranties on the above. Dealer and private sales are most welcome. I'm also a Chartered Accountant, and we do a lot of commercial funding (again, primarily vehicles and equipment), so would love to assist with your next purchase. We also can arrange and have settled all your finance, so when you fly back in, you can just go and pick up your new toy!

So please, have a look at our our site, and give me a buzz on (08) 9227 7233 www.finance48.com.au

The Boy’s Toy Genie By bettina maniatis

Y

ou’d think pining after a toy wouldn’t be a worry in your adult life. How many times have you heard the neighbour talk about his dream sports car or the bloke on the bus talking to his mate about that Harley he’ll own “one day”? And what about you? Is it a boat you’ve set your sights on? Or perhaps even a jet ski? Whatever the “boy’s toy” is in your heart, get it faster with the genie of boy’s toys, Finance 48. The company is a finance broking business specialising in (you guessed it!) boy’s toys such as cars, bikes and boats. (They also do trucks and equipment). Unlike any other finance business though, with Finance 48 you can actually “drive away in 48 hours” - the company’s motto and point of difference according to the genie himself (and Director of the company), Paul McKinley. “We specialise in fast and efficient finance

and we have competitive bank finance,” he said. “Basically 48 hours from the client’s first contact right through to approval and driving away -that’s the benchmark I’ve set for our company.” That certainly seems very fast taking into account the research, registration, the checks and the paperwork. “We do all the running around,” Paul said. “We do business with many dealers, but we can also arrange things if it’s a private sale.” So you see now why I refer to the company as a genie; it’s a dream come true to cut out all the hassle of a loan purchase. It’s like Paul has tapped into the minds of so many out there and honed in on a wish to achieve that dream boy’s toy quickly, easily and with peace of mind. Perhaps this ability to tap into desires is an art for Paul because he knows such desires himself? “I ride motorbikes, I race down at the drags, I

have a jet ski so I really relate to the guys when it comes to getting something they’re passionate about,” he said. “I’ll usually get into exhausts and horsepower and that kind of thing with the clients before we get onto the loan.” So if you’re one of those neighbours talking endlessly about that dream car, or the guy on the bus pining after that motorbike, perhaps it’s time to get your very own genie and make that wish come true. To get on track and rub that lamp, give Finance 48 a call on 08 9227 7233. n

Be sure to read the next edition of Skippers Inflight Magazine to read about how Finance 48 can help with commercial lending, another of their specialities.

Whether you stick a purple sticker on it, stitch your name into the side, or tie a white ribbon on the handle, make your luggage stand out with something you’ll recognise the moment it comes out on to the carousel. That way, you’re not jumping through the crowd at the last minute to grab your bag, as you didn’t recognise it until it was close enough.

Number ONE KNOW THE AREA You’ve probably heard this one before, and the reason we’ve made it number one is because it really can make or break a holiday – know the area before you arrive. Whether you check it out and get your bearings on Google Maps or talk to someone who’s been before, it will make the world of difference.

Number THREE CUT THE CARRY ON

Another great tip is to go for a jog

An arguable point as many believe you should always have some carry on luggage with emergency items in it incase your bags are lost. But on the other hand, the more you have to carry on, the more you’re lugging around the airport with you.

become familiar with the surroundings

or walk when you’ve unpacked to (but don’t get lost of course).

AND FINALLY Read the Airport or Inflight Magazine…

Safety Briefing Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. Seatbelts Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. Tray Tables/Seat Backs Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. Smoking Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. Carry On Luggage If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. Electronic Devices Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.

Fifi & Jules Show on The Today Network nationally

Talk Back with Favourite travel destination: Fifi - With a love of history and art, I am always drawn to Europe when planning a holiday. I love walking the historic cities in Spain, Italy and France and eating everything in sight because the food is incredible. But I always return home exhausted and a few kilos heavier. Jules - Hawaii is phenomenal. You’d think a place so well-known around the world as a tropical paradise would struggle to live up to expectation, but it actually exceeds it. And now with our strong Aussie dollar, it’s super cheap. Travel Tip: Jules - Don’t travel with Fifi Box. Some people have aura’s that surround them, Fifi has a Vortex... a tornado of haphazardness

62

Issue 18

Fifi and Jules that sucks in everyone who travels with her. You’ll miss flights, misplace baggage and somehow be seated in the same seat as her. Fifi - Don’t travel with Jules Lund. Despite a decade working on a travel program, he still manages to leave his carry-on bags on the plane, leaves his wallet in the taxi, and forgets to book hotels so when you turn up in the middle of the night after a long flight, you get turned away. Most embarrassing travel moment: Fifi - I learnt the hard way not to wear underwire bras when going through US airport security checkpoints. Strip searches are no fun regardless of how attractive the guard is. Jules - Well, the only thing more embarrassing than stripping down to a violet

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

G-string with the ‘Thunder From DownUnder’ in Vegas, was getting a spray tan the day before wearing nothing but a sock. Use your imagination. Actually... don’t do that. What are some exciting things coming up for you? Jules – I’m just about to head off on a last minute trek to Everest Base-camp with Intrepid. Can’t wait! I’ve jogged around the block 3 times since Christmas, so I’m more than prepared. Fifi - I’m about to travel through Austria and Germany and can’t wait to get stuck into some bratwurst, Bavarian cakes and strudel. I hope the hotels have a gym because I’m going to need to burn off some calories.
