A Coupla’
Fanatics WE CHAT TO NICK DUIGAN AND ANDREW HART OF AUSTRALIA’S FAVOURITE FISHING SHOW, HOOK, LINK & SINKER.
P
opular fishing series Hook, Line & Sinker is now in production with its eighth season after signing a deal with 7Mate for free-to-air broadcast of 20 new episodes which began in mid May. Scheduled for Saturdays at 5:00pm, the 7Mate agreement includes 20 brand new, premier episodes as well as some of the boys’ best episodes from their previous seven seasons. Shot entirely in stunning High Definition, hosts Nick Duigan and Andrew Hart take viewers across Australia to find the best fishing spots, provide fishing and cooking tips, and always have a laugh with their wacky sense of humour. We understand you guys are now in production on the eighth series of Hook, Line & Sinker – what can we expect? Nick: It’s a bit of a break out year for Hook, Line and Sinker. It’s the first time we’ll air nationally on free to air TV (Saturday arvo 7Mate) so we’re racking up the miles all over the country putting together 20 new shows. We really try to strike a balance between some truly spectacular fishing and also the notion that fishing with your friends is meant to be good fun. So from a fishing perspective, we’ve got some sensational game fishing for Blue Marlin of Tweed Heads, some angry, boat eating Mako sharks in Bass Strait, Barra in the Kimberley and plenty of other good stuff as well. On the fun side, we’re both trying to restore a couple of sub $1,000 dollar boats into tournament rockets, we’ll be fishing the croc infested waters of the NT with the world’s most sophisticated radio controlled vessel, the Cindy Maree II and joining the grey nomads for a pilgrimage up the WA coast. So all in all, another day at the office really. Andrew: It’s a bigger year than ever before! We’ve got shows coming up from all over Australia. From surviving massive seas in Tasmania catching tuna to sunning ourselves in the Kimberley.

Lord Howe Island
27,000 year old rock art - Kimberley
Any all time favourite fishing stories? Andrew: My favourite would have to involve our radio control boat, the Cindy Maree 2. She appears on the show every season (Cindy Maree 1 was sunk by a giant squid) with a new mission each year of catching a fish on film on remote control. It’s really frustrating, and a bit stupid, but Cindy Maree is very much a part of the show. This year she will battle crocodiles in the NT while trying to catch a barra!
For all those keen fishermen out there, can you give us some vital tips on how to snag a great dinner? Nick: It’s probably a bit disingenuous for us to be handing out tips given our track record but here goes! There is a great saying I heard from an old bloke who was bream fishing on the side of a river. He was perched on an old fold-up chair, using an ancient rod and reel and next to him in the ubiquitous white bucket was a brace of nice fish. Andrew and I on the other hand were in a flash new boat with enough lures, rods and reels to stock a tackle shop but hadn’t turned a scale all day. We stopped and asked the bloke the secret of his success and his succinct reply was: “If you want to go fishing, use a lure but if you want to catch fish, use bait.” It’s hard to argue. Andrew: My biggest tip is to keep it simple
Nick: For me there’s probably one day in my fishing career that stands out as a turning point. It was very early on in the days of Hook, Line and Sinker and up to this point I’d never really caught a big fish. On this day, we headed out east of Tasmania for a spot of Mako shark fishing. The day went well and after an hour or two we had not one but two big Makos swimming around the boat. To cut a long story, after more than four hours of battling the bigger of the two sharks and utterly spent, we managed to tag the fish and let it swim away. It was something of an awaking for me, that fishing was indeed a passion worth pursuing. For anyone that loves the idea but has never fished before – where is a good starting point? Andrew: Local knowledge is key. If we fish somewhere we’ve never been, it’s important to get somebody who knows what’s going on. That’s why if you’ve never fished before the best thing to do is to go with a charter or a guide. You’ll learn more in one day from someone who knows what they are doing than in a year of trying to do it yourself! Nick: Yes, find a friend! Do whatever it takes to get in with someone who knows what they’re doing. These days it’s not that hard. In most places, there are web forums
dedicated to fishing in the local area and these can be gold mines of information and more importantly, sources of potential fishing buddies. Fishing is all about confidence, once you actually see a particular technique work for yourself, the desire to give up and try something else isn’t nearly as strong. What are some of your very favourite fishing spots throughout the country? Nick: It’s hard to rate destinations really because for us they kind of live or die on the vagaries of weather and fishing but I do have a few absolute favourites. The township of 1770 is just about the picture perfect pinup of what a Queensland coastal village should be, gentle pace of life, not too many people and sensational access to some beautiful bits of the Great Barrier Reef. On the New South Wales south coast is a little gem of a spot called Bermagui. It’s not the most fashionable town on the Sapphire Coast but as a place to catch a fish, there are very few better. At various times of the year, Marlin, Yellowfin and Bluefin Tuna along with Kingfish, Snapper and just about anything you can think of can be caught at Bermi. And for truly ‘blow you away beauty’ and epic scale there’s no going past the Kimberley region of WA. We’re fresh back from a trip to the Kimberley Coastal Camp in the Admiralty Gulf and sort of can’t stop raving about the place. The fishing is as good as you would expect with Barra, Mangrove Jacks and Mud Crabs in the creeks and Queenfish, Giant Trevally, Mackerel and Jewfish in the blue water. Throw in some of the oldest, most culturally significant rock art anywhere on earth and a 5 star camping experience and the Kimberley takes some beating. n editor’s word
and fish as light as you possibly can. It does not matter what you are fishing for, but if you use the lightest line, the smallest sinker and smallest hook you can, you will get more bites!

OUR BACKYARD
T
he Kimberley region in Western Australia is renowned for its stunning landscapes, spectacular coastline and national heritage listed national parks - what it’s not as well known for though are the unique outback characters who call it home.
Larissa White El Questro tour guide and avid adventurer Stepping boldly into the littleknown gorges of the vast Cockburn Range, this one-time city girl learned what it means to truly lose yourself in the moment and rediscover your adventurous side. Through three dry seasons and the wettest wet in years, the Kimberley has beckoned Larissa into new frontiers of untouched wilderness, the marvel of bush medicines and the thrill of wildlife encounters. And yet there’s still so much for her to explore. It’s also the simple pleasures of life at El Questro that Larissa has come to love. Waking up to the sunrise in the bush, hiking with a bunch of like-minded people, soothing limbs in the thermal pools of Zebedee Springs, ending the day with sunset drinks around the campfire and enjoying the warmth of good company.

Greg Harman (AKA Hairy Dog)
Barra fishing tour guide and croc tracker It was the adventure that first got Greg hooked on the Kimberley in 1979. The thrill of tracking crocs in the remotest corners of the planet. The huge barramundi hanging on the end of every stick. The jaw-dropping, eye-popping wonder on the faces of his tour guests. But what Greg ultimately fell in love with was the beauty and softness he found at the heart of this rugged, hard place and the romance of living life by the rhythm of the tides, the wet and the dry seasons in one of the last true wilderness areas on Earth. Partnering with wife Jane, Greg set up Ultimate Adventures to share his love of the Kimberley on barramundi fishing and wildlife safaris on the Lower Ord River. Over the years, he’s guided National Geographic photographers, journalists and fishing enthusiasts, venturing deep into the Kimberley in search of the ultimate adventure.
James Brown
Third generation pearl farmer of Cygnet Bay Until the age of 12, James didn’t know of any life other than Cygnet Bay in the Kimberley region of WA – one of the last untouched wilderness areas on Earth. His childhood was a real-life Swiss-FamilyRobinson-meets-Castaway affair. No phones, no power, just a simple life of fishing and camping out on spearing trips with the local Bardi people. It wasn’t until he returned from studying at university that he realised how special his home really was. The smells, the colours, the warm water on his skin, the reefs, the whirlpools, the huge tides and the thousand islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago – James felt compelled to protect it. Continuing the 60-year legacy of his pioneering father and grandfather, James has cultivated the largest round pearl in the world, established a marine research centre and is now passing on his knowledge of country and sea to his children. And for the privileged few who visit this remote Kimberley outpost, James offers an exclusive backstage pass to the pearling industry and real life as a local.

Donny Woolagoodja
Mowanjum artist and law man of the Wororra lands Inheriting his father’s role as law man of the ancient Warorra Lands of the Kimberley, Donny’s greatest love is sharing his connection to the country and the creation stories of Lai Lai. Through his art and teachings, he keeps culture strong among his people and helps others see the sacred Kimberley lands through their eyes to rediscover their connection to the land. Donny speaks of the Wandjina, the spirits who showed his people how to live and care for the land. Keeping the Wandjina fresh, Donny keeps the Wandjina strong, and through the oldest expressions of his culture, music, dance, hunting and fishing by the tides, he helps the young people of Wororra learn what the land means to them. Donny’s Wandjina Namarali painting opened many minds as it rose above the Sydney Olympic crowds in 2000. But it’s his work on the original Wandjina cave paintings in the far north Kimberley that keeps spirit and culture alive. n

argaret River or ‘Margs’, as it’s known by locals, was originally a chilled out surfie town and agricultural area popular with hippies and farmers. Although Margaret River has evolved into a world renowned tourist destination, this beautiful South West town has maintained its groovy vibe and continues to attract artisans and others seeking an alternative lifestyle or relaxing holiday. Located three hour’s drive south of Perth, Margaret River’s popularity undoubtedly contributed to Lonely Planet recently naming Australia’s South West as one of the World's Top Ten Regions. The Margaret River Wine Region is one of Australia’s largest and most diverse, featuring stunning beaches, tall-timber forests, premium wineries and highly decorated caves. Why not set off on a hippy trail through Margaret River and discover the many wonders on offer? There are plenty of activities to keep the mind, body and soul invigorated including yoga, meditation, surfing, scenic walks and of course indulging in the local organic food and wine. Samudra hosts a number of yoga and surfing retreats worldwide in scenic ocean settings and it’s no wonder they’ve chosen the Margaret River region as one of them.
Samudra retreats aim to encourage personal growth through a healthy lifestyle. Samudra offers packages including Ashtanga Yoga, health, sustainable living, vegetarian cooking, raw food preparation, surfing and permaculture gardening. eing a new parent is tough, especially when your partner works away. On top of all of the normal worries of being a new mum or dad, FIFO/DIDO parents worry about the impact of one parent working away on their child. Truth be told, the FIFO/DIDO lifestyle is probably not ideal for families who are in the first six to 12 months of parenthood, for all sorts of different reasons. But we can't always choose the timing of babies, and sometimes we have to make the best of a less-thanperfect situation. If you have recently transitioned from a mining couple to mining parents (or are considering the scenario) it might pay to think about the following areas:
sure you and your partner are regularly assessing what's working about FIFO/DIDO and what isn't. If, after weighing up the pros and cons, this is still your choice, then you have to get to work changing your thinking style to one that will help you cope better. Sometimes, simply adjusting to parenthood can be tough too. If you're struggling, or feeling overwhelmed with feelings of additional expectation and responsibility, check out www.beyondblue.org.au (they have a great free booklet called Hey Dad).
For the relationship: Remember you are working as a team and
For the person at home:
each of you has a different role to play. It's
Practical and emotional support is absolutely vital for new mums. (I know that some mums work away, but mostly it's dads, so please excuse me for referring to the person at home as mum. Of course the same information will apply if you are a dad whose partner works away!) In our culture, we put a lot of emphasis on mums getting all she needs from her partner, but in many other cultures it's other women who offer support, comfort and guidance. If your partner works away, you'll need to think and plan where your support will come from. One advantage of the FIFO lifestyle is that families can live wherever they like (as long as it's near an airport) so it might be possible to live near family or friends who can help out. If not, you might choose to pay for help (cleaning, gardening, meals etc) and seek out local support services or meeting places for new parents. Make sure you look after yourself. It's hard to look after a demanding baby when you are not taking care of yourself. I know it's boring, but making sure you are eating well, resting enough and getting a bit of exercise will all help you cope better in the long run. As soon as possible (often when your baby is about four months old) get into a good routine for you and your baby. Some families have the 'luxury' of not needing a routine for day-to-day life with baby, but single parents and parents whose partners work away don't. Having some predictability in your day is really important when you don't have someone coming home in the evening to give you a break. As a new mum, it can be really hard to know how you're going and if what you are experiencing is normal. Some days are hard for all new parents. Here's a rule of thumb: if you are coping OK and enjoying being a
all about shared goals. There's no point whatsoever getting into a competition about who is busier or more tired or working harder. It's tempting to go there with statements like: "you think you're tired ... try looking after a baby/working shifts (etc, etc) and then see
For the person working away: You'll need to feel connected to what's going on at home with baby, even when you're away. Familiarise yourself with your baby's routine so you can take part when you get home. Think of questions to ask your partner when you speak to her rather than relying on her to 'spoon-feed' you baby information - she won't always have the energy. You might even want to spend some time while you're away reading about baby development and milestones so you can be informed and interested in where your baby is at. Of course communication with bubs when you're away is going to be tricky. A baby can't have a phone conversation! This is not an excuse to back off though, you just have to get more creative in staying connected. Here are some examples that other FIFO/DIDO dads with young babies have tried: record your voice reading a story or singing a song for baby to listen to; read a bedtime or good morning story to baby via Skype. It can be really hard being away from your partner and baby. Some dads feel very lonely and sad thinking of what they're missing, and some even feel quite depressed or angry. As I always say, make

how tired you are!” But there really is no point. You're both tired. Talk often about how each of you is going ... what's easy, what's hard, what you need more help with. Always try to come back to the idea that you are both on the same team, with the same goals (to raise a child, pay the bills etc). Accept that lengthy phone conversations might be a thing of the past. Find other ways of feeling connected and loved, like emailing when you get a chance, leaving notes in your partner's bag or around the house, or giving small gifts. (For an insight into what sorts of things might make your partner feel more loved by you, check out The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman.) Know that it is very normal for the passion in a relationship to 'cool' in the first few months after the birth of a new baby. Most couples fire things up again at some point. Having said that, don't wait for the spark (and energy for sex) to miraculously reappear of its own accord. Chances are you'll both have to put in a bit of extra work to get things back on track. Talk about it, make a plan and just do it!

The Buzz ABOUT GERALDTON BY BETTINA MANIATIS
“GERALDTON AND THE MID WEST MAINTAIN INTEREST AS ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO INVEST, DUE TO THE DIVERSITY OF INDUSTRY AND A NON-RELIANCE ON ANY ONE PARTICULAR INDUSTRY.”
T
here’s a definite excitement echoing through Western Australia about the growth of the Mid West region of WA, in particular the regional city of Geraldton. In fact according to the Greater Geraldton Investment Brochure, increasing economic activity and investment in the region is expected to generate rapid population growth and independent modelling shows that its current population of 55,000 could reach a whopping 80,000 by 2021 and 100,000 by 2031. I had a chat to David Sorgiovanni, Property Sales Consultant at Activewest Real Estate in Geraldton to get the scoop on

what all the fuss is about. David, there seems to be something brewing in Geraldton… Yes. For the last six months, there’s been a steady increase in the number of investors coming back in because of a demand of people wanting to be in the rental market. There are a lot of workers in town looking for furnished accommodation - which is pretty much impossible to get. So currently our vacancy rate is very low. I think it’s down to around 2 per cent and also, on top of that got increased pressure because some of the companies that are coming
to town - whether it be for mining or professional services that are required - it’s actually significantly increasing the yield. So with interest rates dropping and the rent value going up, for some of the furnished accommodation, we’re starting to see considerable increases for our returns which is the start of something big I think. So where is it placed in terms of its growth? It’s still fairly early because Geraldton traditionally always had fishing and agriculture and the tourism industry but on top of that we’re now seeing $27 billion

Renewable Power - What Equipment Do You Choose?
T
hose in the market for renewable power can benefit from a broad range of technologies, manufacturers and installers. With many new solar and wind power businesses, as well as some long established ones, the renewable energy industry clearly has significant capacity. But what equipment do you choose and how do you know the product will last the distance? “Clean Energy is strictly a science and engineering business,” said Peter Bulanyi, Managing Director of Si Clean Energy Pty Ltd. “Companies serious about Clean Energy primarily employ electronics engineers, technicians and electricians.” Si Clean Energy, a company with science and engineering at its core, has been actively working in the industry since 1989. It
employs qualified engineers, technicians and electricians as well as training apprentices in both the electronics and electrical trades. The company also operates a component level service department that is known in the industry Australia wide for its high tech inverter repair capabilities. This allows them to provide fast and reliable back up service and repairs for their products, customers and their installations. “To us, choosing the correct equipment to install is the first step in ensuring that whatever the installation is, it will be successful for years to come,” Mr Bulanyi said. “With the knowledge we have gained over the years in our industry and the products available, it was only natural that the company move towards manufacturing our own line of high quality products in Australia.” “We believe that keeping control or our productions from start to finish is paramount
to providing our customers with the reliability they need and desire for this fast growing energy sector. The Blue Series Inverters is one of three products currently manufactured at our facility.” At Si Clean Energy, they aim is to assist their partners to design, supply and install the highest quality systems possible with the best quality products and support available and performance that delivers in terms of Return On Investment and CO2 abatement with uptime system guarantees. FURNISHING YOUR NEW HOME FROM HOMEDESIGNDIRECTORY.COM.AU
W
alk into a house and you will know immediately if the furniture reflects the personality of the home-owners, and works for the room. When the furniture is well-chosen, there is a feeling of harmony in the room, and your eye easily wanders around it. Consider the architecture of your room If possible, start with an empty space or remove unwanted pieces. Naturally, your wall material and colour, as well as your window furnishings will influence your choice (of course if they have not been well chosen, it will be hard to make any furniture look good). If there is some strong architectural feature in your room, perhaps you want to work with it, or echo its shape in the furniture, e.g. a curved sofa or half-round table in a bay window, or squareedged furniture symmetrically placed against a geometric brick fireplace. Make a floor plan of your furniture If you have a lot of furniture to place, create a floor plan and a list of pieces that you think you will need. Then make a budget an allocate prices to each piece. What style of furniture do you like? Your personal preference will dictate the overall style of the furniture i.e. whether contemporary, traditional, period, country, beach, retro, shabby chic or country specific. Once you have chosen your furniture style, search the internet for examples. Often the simpler the furniture, the better it is. A heavily styled piece may lose its appeal, unless it is a real classic.
Ideally, your furniture, like your entire decor, should be of a similar style in all rooms, so there is a feeling of fluidity when you move around your home. Create unity as well as variation with your furniture Your furniture needs to create a cohesive room, one that has both unity and variation. Both of these qualities come from repeating similar materials, shapes, colours, textures, or patterns. Whatever you choose needs to relate in some way to other pieces. Consider the functionality of your furniture In a living room, you need furniture for conversation, casual eating and drinking, as well as watching TV. If you listen to music, you may need a piece close by to store CDs. If you are a reader, you might need a comfortable chair and a light source from a lamp on a table. Consider the number of people you want to cater for. You may need a larger number of small chairs to accommodate them. Think about climate and the comfort of your furniture. Your chairs naturally need to be comfortable. Make sure you sit on them for a while before buying - some sofas and chairs can have hard, vertical backs. If you live in a hot or humid environment, more contemporary furniture that takes up less space and allows airflow around you will feel more comfortable than heavy traditional furniture. In these situations, leather is the coolest option for sofa covering.
Consider the size of your room A small room generally needs smaller scale furniture however the room must not become cluttered with too many items. A single large piece with a few small secondary items can also make the room look bigger. Small rooms often need furniture to be multifunctional i.e. a coffee table or bed base that is also a storage area, or a sofa with pillows that becomes a bed. Tables can have extending sections to accommodate the occasional larger numbers. If you want the room to look bigger, bookshelves and cupboards should be on legs, so you maximise perceived floor space. When selecting coverings for a small room, use colour very discerningly. Often a variation of one colour will make the area feel bigger. Bold colours on coverings can make a small room look too busy, even claustrophobic. Shiny materials that reflect light will make a room look bigger. Mirrors that reflect a view through a window or a corridor can have a dramatic effect on a room’s perceived size. A large room might need dividing into different functional areas or “pods” and require a number of larger items. It will require furniture that appears more solid and with more texture. A large room will also handle big colour or texture changes. Selecting the right furniture is not so hard Take your time, look at rooms you like and analyse them, then go design your furniture setting and trust your judgement. n

Water EFFICIENCY
DON’T JUST FLY IN AND FLY OUT OF IT
I
n an industry such as mining that relies on water to survive and is a heavy user of our precious resource, it is important that when you knock off, you do your bit for both the environment and to help secure water for the future. At Home Residential households are the highest users of potable water in Western Australia, accounting for 71 per cent of total water usage, compared to 19 per cent for business and commercial sectors. This is a similar story across Australia, therefore, at home, you have an opportunity to make the greatest impact. Small changes around the home can make a huge difference in your annual water consumption, not to mention help the bottom line. Here are five simple tips to help:
32
•
Is it time for you to purchase a new toilet? You should consider the Caroma Profile Toilet Suite with its integrated hand basin. The sink actually sits on top of the cistern and the water you wash your hands with feeds into the toilet, which can deliver an additional 10% saving in total bathroom use.
•
Dripping taps are a silent killer as well as costly water users that are often overlooked. Fixing a leak can save you up to 50 litres per day – not to mention the headache.
Issue 22
www.inflightmagazine.com.au
•
Installing a front loading machine can save you, on average, 57 litres per cycle. Front load washing machines also use 60% less energy.
•
If reducing your time in the shower just isn’t an option, why not install a 3-star water-efficient shower head that can save you up to 45 litres per day, without compromising your shower comfort. New ‘twin jet technology’ in some shower heads helps achieve a pleasant feeling while saving water, creating a needle like sensation.
• Installing a greywater system allows you to re-use waste water around the home and can reduce your annual water consumption by up to 30 per cent. Greywater provides your backyard with water all year round, no matter what the climate. If you have reduced your water consumption at work or at home, you should enter the national 2012 savewater! awards® and be recognised for your efforts. On Site Innovation Australia is leading the way in water-efficient technology at both a residential and industrial level. A prime example, that has particular benefits to the mining industry to help reduce water consumption, is a product called AquaArmour. Developed by the Aqua Guardian Group, AquaArmour is
Aqua Guardian
a modular, self-tessellating evaporation and algal control mitigation system designed to save up to 88 per cent of evaporation loss from major water storages and dams. It provides continuous permeable cover, while still enabling rain and inflows to be captured and stored. Innovations like AquaArmour are what we need to ensure our water supply is protected into the future. MONEY MATTERS
BY ALEX WILSON OF SAVINGSGUIDE.COM.AU
S
torage is rapidly becoming a necessity for many Australian households. We find ourselves with the inability to buy a house that is large enough for the possessions that we hold, whether it is from over purchasing or from family furniture and items that you cannot bring yourself to throw out. Sometimes it is best to clear out your excess items and avoid the cost of storage, as items that you have to store tend to be items you could technically live without, though if you are like me, some things are just too hard to part with, requiring somewhere to store them – this is where cheap self storage comes into play. SELF STORAGE THE OLD WAY In the past there were very few options for self storage, all of which were quite expensive and required large monthly payments and security fees. Providers of self storage were people like Kennards Self Storage, Fortknox Self Storage in Melbourne and a large range of boutique storage providers all across Australia.
These providers become complacent with the costs of self storage and in turn are charging quite a substantial amount of money based upon the amount of space you require. This tends to be because they are located in prime areas that are close to the CBD or local areas you live in. SELF STORAGE THE NEW WAY Saving money on self storage is about to become a lot easier. The concept of private self storage is starting to appear, that of which everyday people can lease out their excess space to those looking for storage space. A company called SpaceOut took this idea and made it into an easy to use website for Australians wishing to partake in such private storage. SpaceOut gives power to the average person to either provide or rent reasonably priced, privately owned storage space. Private storage ‘space’ may be an unused cupboard, a garage or shed, or part of a spare room in a house or office. SPACE OWNERS As a ‘space owner’ you could be sitting on a
goldmine. Do you have empty space in your home, business or organisation that could be used to store things for other people? Would you like to rent that space out and make extra income? SPACE SEEKERS Have you ever thought that self-storage was expensive? Would you like to be able to store your things closer to home, or in an area, suburb or even street of your choice? Would you like convenient and easy access and save money at the same time? Maybe you only need to store a few boxes and it seems unnecessary and costly to use a self-storage facility. SpaceOut has the solution! YOUR THOUGHTS Share your thoughts on self storage and the best way to save money doing so. Maybe you disagree totally with the concept of needing storage, so please share with us! Write to us and info@inflightmagazine.com.au and tell us what you think. n

Take the road less travelled with a 4WD Able Bus & Coach
T
he Able Bus & Coach 4WD mine module ticks all the boxes for a minesite.
A key proposition of the vehicles is robustness. They’re built on a bigger truck and put less passengers in. It may cost a little more but it’s better in the long run, giving a stronger, more reliable vehicle. Another key feature of the vehicles is inter-changeability with passenger modules that can be removed from older cab chassis and placed on a new cab chassis reducing replacement costs for companies. Able Bus & Coach’s vehicle make of choice is Isuzu – and for good reason: Isuzu isn’t just a good make of vehicle; after sales service is unsurpassed. The tilt cab of the chassis also allows easy maintenance and access to the motor. A higher ground clearance than a conventional bus chassis is also ideal for mine sites and remote areas. For safety compliance, the vehicles meet strength and design requirements.
A higher ground clearance than a conventional bus chassis is ideal for mine sites and remote areas. All the engineering tests are validated. Extensive safety features come standard with the coaches. These include a built-in Rollover Protection System (ROPS) to Australian Standards 1636.1 and 2294.2 and Australian Design Rule rollover compliance, full size coach seats with seat belts and driver’s air bag. Air conditioners designed and built for extreme heat and vibration also come standard.
Testament to the company’s business philosophy of building tough yet safe, reliable and comfortable vehicles that meet the highest standards are customers such as BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and NationWide Hire and a repeat business rate of 90 per cent.

TOWARDS VOLT LAUNCH
H
olden and ChargePoint unveiled the first electric vehicle charging station for Volt drivers in Port Melbourne outside Holden’s Salmon Street headquarters recently. The head-turning Volt charging station is powered by Origin’s government-certified 100 per cent GreenPower and will be available to Holden Volt drivers in one of Melbourne’s fast-growing business and industrial precincts.

The Holden Volt, on-sale in Australia later this year, is a game-changing electric vehicle (EV) with extended-range capability and can recharge in less than four hours using the dedicated level two, 3.3kW charging station. To support the Volt launch, ChargePoint has also installed six more green energy charging stations in Holden’s engineering and design headquarters and at its Proving Ground in Lang Lang for Holden
employees driving Volt evaluation vehicles and working on the program. Minister for Climate Change, Energy Efficiency, Industry and Innovation, the Hon Greg Combet AM MP was the first member of the public to plug into the petrol pump of the future with one of Holden’s first Volt vehicles. Joining the Minister for the unveiling was Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, ChargePoint CEO James Brown and Holden’s Executive Director Engineering Greg Tyus. Mr Tyus, whose engineering team is responsible for preparing the Volt for Australia, said Volt would change the way Australians think about sustainable transport and Holden. "Volt can travel a distance of up to 80 kilometres on pure electric driving – more than enough for most drivers to commute each day without visiting a petrol station,” he said. “You can drive emission free and recharge at home from a standard power outlet in less than six hours for around $2.50.” Origin Executive General Manager Corporate Affairs, Phil Craig, also welcomed the opening of the new piece of EV infrastructure. “Origin is seeking to support this new technology with electric vehicle charging equipment and services, delivering a simple and effective one-stop solution to consumers,” Mr Craig said. “Together with Holden, Origin hopes to encourage the take up of more electric vehicles in Australia.” n

Boutique Breweries of Western Australia
FROM TOURISM WA
F
editor’s word
irst up is Little Creatures at Fishing Boat Harbour, Fremantle. It's home to an award-winning brewery, a funky bar, a restaurant and an art gallery. There are no frills, but the beer's fantastic. The true star of the show is the famous golden live beer, christened Pale Ale (it's won a truckload of international awards). The food's also top-notch, the vibe is relaxed and the view is worth a million bucks. Also in Fremantle, you’ll find The Monk, matching its awardwinning and seasonal brews with delicious beery breads and bites, pizzas and hearty mains. At the Old Brewery in Perth, original recipe beers are still produced onsite by a master brewer. What makes the Old Brewery so unique is its integral place in local history - first established in 1877. Today, it's a hub of activity with world-class restaurants that attract socialites and famous patrons. Tours of the microbrewery are also available. The Swan Valley is the heart of beer country. Here, you'll find an array of hearty brews on offer. Follow the scent of sizzling schnitzel and the melodic strains of Edelwiess to Duckstein Brewery. This homage to Germany perfectly captures the country's essence - you actually feel like you're in a Bavarian beer garden. A tankard of your favourite brew can be enjoyed with your favourite German cuisine, from sauerkraut to apple strudel. At Feral Brewery, the crowds are a testament to the award-winning beer and first-rate grub served. In true Aussie style, staff are more likely to call you 'mate' than 'sir' or 'madam', and that's fine by Feral's fans. Of the six beers in its stable, the most famous is the Belgium White - even non-beer drinkers swear by this miracle brew. The stylish MASH Brewing is worth a look, as is Ironbark Brewery in Caversham. Margaret River may be more famous for its wine, but the locallybrewed beer is just as delectable. Bootleg Brewery has become something of an institution in the area, revered for its delicious lunches, picturesque grounds and gourmet beers. Colonial Brewing Company was quick to gain a good reputation and scoop awards for its range of excellent ales, matched with suitably hearty meals. The family-run and family-friendly boutique brewery in Eagle Bay shares its award-winning brews and its passion for wine making and local produce from 11 till 7 every day of the week. Matso’s is the Kimberley’s award winning microbrewery – a true Broome treasure whose award winning beers include their famous alcoholic ginger beer and the curiously named Hit the Toad premium lager. Flâneur To be a
B
eing in Paris for me is like floating in a beautiful bubble. I stroll through the streets in remembrance of things past. I follow the cobblestones, being enticed by sounds, smells and sights to discover the moments you will never find in a guide book. The French have a word for this activity - it is to be a flâneur (the French word for stroll is flâner). It is the best way to discover the Latin Quarter, Montmartre and the Marais where there are still streets not much wider than a carriage. These streets are lined with an alluring assortment of businesses, mysterious and beautiful doors. If you are quick, you may even catch a glimpse of what is behind these usually closed doors. They say the devil’s in the detail, but so too is the treasure. Everywhere you look in Paris there is a stunning wide shot – a building designed with perfect proportions, often surrounded by a manicured garden. But go closer. Let your eyes (and your camera) zoom in to the exquisite craftsmanship that we so rarely see on architecture today. It will be on stonework, on stairs, windows, the lamps that are like jewellery for architecture. While you are strolling the streets with nonchalance, you will inevitably come across a vitrine (a shop window) that is filled with evidence of the past. I really don’t like the term bric à brac. It sounds more like something
you should do with a racquet and perhaps a shuttlecock, than rediscovering treasures from someone else’s life. You may find your fripperies from the past at the marchés aux puces – which sounds like an extremely contagious skin condition to an English

speaker. It is a flea market. But to describe a junk shop, I far prefer the other term the French use in more abundance - Brocante. This word is more like a chandelier, something crystal cut or perhaps studded with pearls. Like a child shielding her eyes and peering through the window of a toy shop full of elegant and exquisite dolls, I now do the same thing through the windows of French Brocantes. I scan the treasure hoping for a glimpse of something that I’ve seen before long ago in the home of an ancient and mysterious relative, or read about in an historic novel. There are few things as romantic and alluring than a window display of fascinating relics from another person’s life, another time. Along the rue de Roi de Sicile in the Marais, I stumbled upon a window full of curiosities in “De Bouche à Oreille Maison” (from mouth to ear house!). Objects nobody would really need, but simply must have if this is your penchant. A little further along the intriguing back streets of this fascinating quartier, I found a selection of accoutrements necessary for enjoying a tipple of Absinthe. Drinking this lethal, liquorice flavoured alcohol was one of the cool Bohemian things to do during the late 1800s, especially in the night clubs of Paris. It was eventually banned from sale. But for being a flâneur you will not be arrested – you will be rewarded! n

Beautiful Bluewater

ou work hard and you deserve the best. Bluewater’s master planned residential development at Trinity Beach embraces this belief offering the ultimate lifestyle and investment security. Situated a short 15 minute drive north of Cairns Airport, Bluewater is nature’s paradise spanning 155 hectares between two World Heritage listed attractions – Wet Tropics rainforest and Great Barrier Reef. This idyllic setting is all about the great outdoors; forest pathways, verdant parklands, white boats, sparkling marinas, barbecues and days spent at the beach. And while all this might seem miles away from the everyday, Bluewater is just minutes from Smithfield shopping centre, a choice of schools and James Cook University. From the people who are shaping its
future to those who call Bluewater home, everyone agrees on the vibrant quality of life that this innovative and naturally beautiful community offers. As a place to live, play or invest, the beauty of Bluewater is its diversity - that along with affordability and quality, captures the tropical spirit of north Queensland. Bluewater comprises a selection of housing allotments positioned in rainforest, park and waterfront precincts. Only few of the waterfront allotments remain, positioned overlooking the development’s impressive 108 berth marina. In keeping with its strong design philosophy, Bluewater has secured a select group of building partners, all of which share a sympathetic approach to the environment. As
Fly into work... Fly out to paradise
a general rule, Bluewater’s building standards focus on homes that invite the natural world inside while taking advantage of elevation, views and breeze flow. Many of the homes, by names such as David McCoy Homes, Better Homes Queensland and CPC Constructions, are thoughtfully created to complement the tropical surrounds and proximity to the beach using modest, eco-friendly materials with functional design. In short, Bluewater is the best of many worlds – a beach side lifestyle with the convenience of close proximity to Cairns and Smithfield in a master planned community that offers state-of-the-art infrastructure and extensive public amenities.

ROCK AUSTRALIA R
Below: ROCK Australia has invested heavily in “intelligent” drill rigs, including three Sandvik DP 1500i drills currently deployed at Mt Rawdon.
OCK Australia, reigning Prospect Award Mining Contractor of the Year, has substantially increased its drill fleet with the acquisition of three tophammer drills, four DTH drills and three DR 460 rotary blasthole drills. This takes ROCK’s fleet of rigs to well in excess of 40 units, with the expectation of surpassing 50 in the current year. The company’s Executive General Manager, Roy Coates said ROCK is the first contractor in Australia to purchase a range of the new breed of intelligent rigs, with the acquisition of Sandvik DP 1500i drills and Atlas Copco D65s. He also added that the company’s strategy of service and commodity diversification was further realised with the award of a three year coal rotary drilling contact for BHP’s Saraji mine, where ROCK has deployed three new DR 460 blasthole rigs. n

THORZT ELECTROLYTE THIRST AID T
horzt-y? Try a new fluid and electrolyte replenishment drink, designed to beat an industrial strength thirst. THORZT has been scientifically formulated to meet the hydration requirements of Australian workers. THORZT has been positively evaluated by physiologists at the University of Western Australia, who praised the formula for its balanced make up and lower levels of sugar, compared with most sports drinks. Dehydration is dangerous, leading to loss of coordination and concentration. THORZT concentrates are available in five great tasting flavours in both traditional and sugar free formulas, and in a range of pack sizes from individual solo shots to bulk mixers for larger work sites. The flavours have been “road tested” on a wide range of consumers, with one common response: Yum! THORZT cooler containers and drink bottles are also available in convenient sizes specifically designed to mix THORZT concentrates. THORZT is available at all good safety outlets. Check out the range at www.thorzt.com n

How Art Gains Value Part 2 BY CELIA BERRELL
Meditations by Celia Berrell
Drifting on a tranquil lake of mottled hopes and patterned faith. Feeling peace and tenderness, amidst your lucid water ness. And like the caterpillar, nigh, transforming to a butterfly, I know there is a part of me transcending through eternity. Poem inspired by Davson’s painting, Melting Transitions Rise (inset).

W
hether you are viewing a painting for its inspiration or investment potential, there are ways that enhance the appreciation process - both for the viewer and the painting. How can we really tell if a painting is good or not? The beauty or impact of a painting can be a very personal thing. But there’s more to valuable art than just a pretty face. This is the second article in this series of articles that provide an edge-on perspective for determining the merits of an art work.
Exposure and going Solo Are Australians becoming arty? Did you know, art gallery goers outnumbered football fans attending matches in 2007/8? Getting the most out of your Gallery viewing experience
is a comparably quiet procedure. Buy or borrow a programme, take your time and generously pause in front of any image that draws you in. Then check the programme for the art’s provenance and choose a winner. If a painting hangs in a professional Commercial Art Gallery, the proprietor believes the painting is good enough to sell and earn them a commission. Most artists develop a symbiotic relationship with one or more Commercial Art Galleries, and are promoted through the Commercial Gallery’s operations with Group Shows and Solo Exhibitions. Public Art Galleries aren’t motivated by art sale profits. Much of the time, Public Art Galleries (national, state and regional) provide the opportunity to view and enjoy art that is beyond the fiscal value commonly found in

many Commercial Galleries. Having a Solo Exhibition in a Public Gallery is a great honour for any artist. Having a major Retrospective Exhibition displaying works from two or more decades of an artist’s life is deemed valued acknowledgement of the artist’s worth to the greater community. Very few female artists have had a Solo Retrospective Exhibition tour in Public Art Galleries. This honour is reserved for the higher echelons of living (and deceased) artists, of which most are male.
Doing Things Differently Most aspiring visual artists look to Commercial Galleries for support in promoting their career path. However this places the business-end of the art process with a Gallery owner. Davson

chose to manage her own career instead by creating art on commission and setting up studio/galleries. She seeks out her own clients and provides them with the art works they desire. Consequently, Davson’s patrons and supporters are the people who own her work, rather than Commercial Gallery dealers. She held her first Solo Exhibition AntiApathy at the Village Frame Shop Gallery in Sydney in 1982; and her first public gallery Solo Exhibition Melting Transitions at Manning Regional Art Gallery in 1990. “Whenever I sell a painting, I gift about ten percent of its value to not-for-profits, frequently in the form of custom framed small artworks to various public galleries. It’s my way of supporting our regional art galleries” Davson admits. “This may have been the catalyst for my being invited to hold a Solo Exhibition at the Manning
Regional Art Gallery in 1990.” Since then, two Major Survey Exhibitions of Davson’s art have toured in 20 Public Galleries around Australia. Most of the pieces for these exhibitions were lent from the collections of Public Art Galleries, Corporations and private collectors, as well as superannuation funds. “I have been delighted that the owners of my work have been willing to loan the art back for exhibition so that many people can see and enjoy the art. This exposure also adds to the provenance of each artwork” explains Davson. Davson is also frequently a guest speaker at dinners and events, and will speak at a series of seminars in Sydney being hosted by Fusion wealth, advisory and strategy group in April and May 2012. Through exhibitions and events, many of Davson’s artworks have been improving their credentials with interesting results. Davson’s On The Ark of Salvation sold for $1.3 million
in 2011, making her the highest valued artist in Australia and placing Davson among the top female artists in the world. Another example, her A Quality of Understanding Required (1.8m x 3m - 10 ft by 6 ft) has gained extensive exposure since its controversial beginnings in 1986 as a commission for Sydney’s Japan Week Festival. The ownership of the painting was returned to the artist when Festival organisers were unable to complete the final commission transaction. The painting featured in both the major touring retrospective exhibitions of Davson’s art. This master work re-sold some years ago for a very healthy six figure amount. It is currently on the market again, this time being progressively sold to a consortium of investors for a quality seven figure amount. After all, it is an expansive painting!
Above: Detail from Davson’s painting Reflections in the collection of the Northern Territory Art Gallery & Museum, Darwin, NT, which was loaned for her major retrospective touring exhibition tour 1999-2002 in public galleries.
Contact Davson Art Management to learn more about investing in art, why Davson’s work has returned approximately 20% per annum growth for collector / investors for over two decades, or acquire her art from $5,000 upwards.
Enjoy the benefits…

SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.

TALK BACK WITH
Emma Dean OCCUPATION: Songwriter/Musician/Performer/Actor/ Dreamer (I do these things separately and sometimes all at once!) FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION: New York became my favourite travel destination after I performed some showcase concerts there in October 2011. I adore the lush world of cabaret, musical theatre and fringe theatre so I spent most of my downtime going to see shows. I was in heaven. I’m thrilled that I will be back there to perform my show “An End To Dreaming” alongside Jake Diefenbach this August for The New York International Fringe Festival! TRAVEL TIP: For those gluten intolerant vegos out there like me, be prepared to explain (in multiple ways) that chicken doesn’t actually fit into that category. Oh and, don’t forget the folder with all your tickets and accommodation receipts. Long story!! MOST EMBARRASSING TRAVEL MOMENT: I was on a plane bound for Melbourne for my first interstate show back in 2003. My bass player and I were going through the check list of things we were to bring. Warm coats - check; keyboard cables check; violin - check; CDs; uh oh. It was my one job to bring the CDs and I forgot! We ended up dragging our feet around to every CD store in Melbourne and buying multiple copies of our own album to sell at the gig. I am now especially organised and a big believer in making lists! WHAT’S COMING UP FOR YOU NEXT? I’m currently splitting my time between my own pop-cabaret solo performance and my new electro-fairytale-pop duo with Jake Diefenbach called Geppetto. In June, I will be taking my one-womanshow STRIPPED to Adelaide Cabaret Festival which has been a dream of mine for many years. Geppetto have just finished recording our debut EP with the fabulous Darren Middleton (of Powderfinger fame) and we will be performing at some Australian festivals before taking our show to New York for the Fringe Festival in August.
