INFLIGHT INTERVIEW

KASEY CHAMBERS & SHANE NICHOLSON

Releasing Wreck & Ruin in September

I

n 2008, Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson became one of the only married couples in the history of the Australian album charts to have an album collaboration debut at number one, coming second to none other than John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Almost five years on, Kasey and

Shane have recorded Wreck & Ruin, the highly anticipated follow up to their 2008 platinum #1 hit album, Rattlin’ Bones. “Having been almost five years since we made Rattlin’ Bones we thought it was time to ‘tempt fate’ and challenge our marriage by making another album together,” the

couple said. “We have both made solo albums in between but in the back of our minds we always knew we would end up making music together again.” According to Kasey and Shane, the writing process fell into place easier than they had planned so they grabbed a few of their >>

“Wreck & Ruin was born and gave us a chance to revisit the sounds of music that we love to make together where it can be traditional, but not conventional.” musician friends and recorded everyone jamming the songs on a farm for a week. “When the situation is right, it’s not difficult for us to make music together,” said Kasey who lives with Shane and their children on the Central Coast of NSW. “We click on that level.” “Wreck & Ruin was born and gave us a chance to revisit the sounds of music that we love to make together where it can be traditional, but not conventional.” Wreck & Ruin was recorded in eight days at Foggy Mountain, and the 13-track album captures each of the various elements of Kasey and Shane’s love for music – from roots to gospel, bluegrass to folk, but always country to the core. The album opens with the hymn-inspired Til Death Do Us Part, before launching into the title track, a mixture of banjo and bruised

fiddle work all purposefully built around country influences. It’s as if the pair are stomping in a barnyard weighing up their differences, jamming in the name of revolution and taking a traditional genre and shaking it up for what it’s worth. The album’s first single Adam & Eve is loaded with religious imagery. There are serpents and sin and storytelling that’s part fairytale and two shakes Biblical. “There is no symbolic connection between us and Adam and Eve,” said Shane. “I don’t know if that story ended that well anyway!” Other songs like The Quiet Life beg the question of wishing for a life away from the big city. “That song is about our lives,” Kasey said. “A lot of people and couples can relate to that.” “We’ve all thought hey I just want to swap

this life for a quiet life for a while. It pops into your mind every now and again. I would get bored. Shane would love it though.” “Absolutely,” Shane added. “We wrote that sitting on the back porch of the cabin and looking at the mountains and I was thinking I could easily do this instead of making this album and going on tour. I could easily sit here strumming and drink scotch all day.” Up Or Down was inspired by a day of listening to the gospel sounds of The Louvin Brothers’ 1950 album Satan Is Real while Sick As A Dog literally gets its name from the entire family being swiped by the flu earlier this year, and ploughs through a fast, nasty bluegrass-stomp. The new album is out Friday 7th September, and the new single, Adam and Eve, is out now.

So you think you know the Kimberley?

Think again! T

he Kimberley Aerial Highway allows visitors to see some of the most breathtaking sights that Western Australia’s epic Kimberley region has to offer. Covering nearly 423,000 square kilometres, the region of WA has fewer people per square kilometre than almost any other place on Earth. The ancient landscape is punctuated with extraordinary gorges and waterfalls, spectacular cave systems, lush rainforest patches and abundant wildlife. It is like nowhere else on earth, and there is no better way to view and experience its wonders than from the air. The Kimberley Aerial Highway provides stunning scenery, access to remote and unspoilt locations, and the intimacy of isolation in one of the world's most extraordinary places. The 'Highway' consists of a number of remote airstrips at major attractions throughout the region, including Mitchell Falls, Windjana Gorge and World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park. After enjoying spectacular aerial views of these sights, visitors can then land in order to join on-theground tours and activities. Windjana Gorge National Park is home to a spectacular 3.5km long gorge carved out

Purnululu National Park boasts one of the most fascinating geological landmarks in Western Australia - the Bungle Bungle Range. Meanwhile, Cape Leveque and One Arm Point can be found on the northernmost tip of the Dampier Peninsula and are well known for their fascinating Aboriginal culture and communities. But it’s not just access to some of the Kimberley’s natural ‘gems’ the Highway offers – it also opens up many of the region’s unique accommodation offerings including El Questro Station, Home Valley Station, Mt Hart Station, Kooljaman at Cape Leveque, Eco Beach and two breath-taking new properties – Kuri Bay and Berkeley River. W

estern Australia’s film industry is thriving, with many of the state’s dramatic landscapes transformed into film sets for a number of high profile movie projects. 2012 will see the release of Drift, starring West Australian born Hollywood heartthrob Sam Worthington. The surfing drama is attracting international buzz and will be shown at Cannes Film Festival in May. Filmed in WA’s South West region last year, Drift is set in the 1960s and 1970s and showcases the beauty and the drama of the West Australian coastline. The film is produced by World Wide Mind Films’ awardwinning Australian film director/producer, Tim Duffy (Let’s Talk About Sex) and WA ex-pat Myles Pollard (McLeod’s Daughters, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), who also stars in the film. The screenplay is by Australian actor, writer, producer and director Morgan O'Neill (Sea Patrol, Water Rats, Solo), who also directs the film with Ben Nott and executive producer, WA’s Joan Peters. TRAVEL BUG BITES

Break Up A HOLIDAY BREAK:

10 interesting stayover options T

ravellers are “breaking up their holiday breaks” by staying over at the world’s holiday hotspots on the way to or from their primary destinations. Flight Centre Limited global executive general manager of marketing Colin Bowman said growth in the number of airlines servicing Australia, coupled with the emergence of low cost and hybrid carriers, had opened up a variety of new holiday options for travellers. “As the range of airfare choices takes off, travellers are finding that the conventional flight path from A to B is not always the best or most interesting travel option,” he said. “In

22

Issue 23

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

some cases, flying direct to the destination may not be the cheapest flight either.” To highlight some of the interesting alternatives that are now available, Flight Centre’s airfare experts have compiled a range of interesting “stay over” itineraries.

1) New York, via Hawaii

For most Australians, the journey to the Big Apple typically includes a flight via Los Angeles, but an exciting new option was made available in June, when Hawaiian Airlines introduced direct services from Honolulu to New York’s Kennedy (JFK) airport.

2) New Zealand, with a South American flavour

Competition is intense on the Trans Tasman routes, which are now serviced by Qantas, Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia and a host of highly rated international airlines including Emirates, Aerolineas Argentina and Lan Chile. In addition to flying to NZ, travellers taking off to Santiago with Lan can also stopover in Papeete and Easter Island.

3) London, via the Maldives

There are literally dozens of ways to fly to London. If you’re not in a hurry to touch down in the UK, Emirates offers one of the most interesting alternatives, which includes stops in Singapore, Colombo (Sri Lanka), Male and Dubai.

4) Paris, via Reunion

Similarly, if you’re travelling to Paris and in need of some beach time, consider Air Tahiti Nui or Air Austral. Air Tahiti offers flights from Sydney to Papeete and on to the French capital, while Air Austral flies via Reunion Island, the gateway to Mauritius and the Seychelles.

5) Rome, via Dubai

While many travellers still fly to Europe via Asia, Emirates’ and Etihad’s rapid growth in recent years has really put the Middle East on the stay over map for Australians. Passengers taking off from Melbourne on Emirates can stay over in Dubai on the way to or from Rome and other European and UK destinations.

6) LA, via Fiji

The quickest way to get to Los Angeles is, of course, the direct route to Los Angeles International Airport. But there’s also a host of indirect options for travellers to consider. Fijian carrier Air Pacific, which flies from several Australian cities, offers connections from Nadi to Los Angeles and other North American destinations, including Vancouver.

7) Bali and Phuket combined

These two holiday havens have long been favourites for Australian travellers. But there’s no need to choose between them, as it’s now easy and affordable to visit both. Flight Centre has created an airfare deal that includes a flight from Australia to Bali, via Singapore, on to Phuket and then home to Australia via Singapore.

The Frangipani Cable Beach, Broome

Contemporary Paradise at Cable Beach

8) Kenya, via Korea

Australian travellers taking off on an African safari now have a new flight option. Korean Air, which offers flights from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, recently launched non-stop services from Seoul Incheon to Nairobi. Flights will leave Seoul on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

9) Las Vegas, via Hawaii

Travellers taking off to Las Vegas can really hit the jackpot when it comes to stopover options along the way. In addition to taking the traditional route to LA with V Australia, Qantas and others, Aussie travellers can choose to get beached in Hawaii by flying Hawaiian Airlines and stopping over in Honolulu.

10) South Africa, via Adu Dhabi

If you’re planning a trip to South Africa, there are literally dozens of flight paths to consider, in addition to the direct route from Australia. Examples include flights with Etihad, via Abu Dhabi, and Air Mauritius, via Mauritius. n

‘TISTHESEASON for SNOW NSW Snowfields & Resorts Thredbo – Thredbo is a year-round resort nestled at the base of Mount Crackenback in the foothills of the New South Wales Snowy Mountains. Home to Australia’s longest ski run of 5.9km, this is a true European-style mountain resort, just 6km from the peak of Mt Kosciuszko. Perisher – You’ll find Perisher in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains. It’s 5.5 hours by car from Sydney, via Canberra and Cooma, or about 7 hours from Melbourne. This broad-ranging resort takes in no less than seven spectacular Snowy Mountain peaks centered on Mount Perisher, which stands a formidable 2054 metres above sea level. There are 47 ski lifts and the skiable area measures over 12km, providing something for everyone.

Selwyn Snowfields – Known as Australia’s premier family and learnto-ski resort, the Selwyn Snowfields flank the sides of Mount Selwyn in the northern Snowy Mountains. Set in the beautiful Kosciuszko National Park of NSW, these snowfields have a long history of Australian skiing. Nearby Kiandra is where skiing began in Australia around 1861 and it’s a great place to begin a snow experience. Charlotte Pass – If altitude is what you’re after, Charlotte Pass will take you all the way to the top! It’s the highest resort in Australia and lies in the heart of the NSW Snowy Mountains. It’s a mere 8km from the Perisher Valley. Here you’ll be amazed at the majestic views of Mt Kosciuszko and The Snowy Mountain Range. Charlotte Pass is a little more difficult to access, only by Oversnow Transport and is much smaller than other resorts, but what this resort lacks in convenience, it makes up for in some of the most consistent and best-quality natural snowfalls in Australia.

Falls Creek – Adjacent to the spectacular Bogong High Plains and part of the Alpine National Park, Falls Creek village in north-east Victoria lies 1600 metres above sea level and the highest altitude at 1842 metres. Victoria’s largest alpine resort, Falls Creek is an easy 4.5 hour drive from Melbourne and a full day’s drive from Sydney. If a road trip isn’t on your agenda, you

15 ski lifts, 92 ski runs and 65km of cross-

coach ride or hire a car from the airport. With country trails, there’s skiing and snowboarding for everyone from beginners and families through to advanced skiers and riders. Mt Hotham – Located in the Australian Alps National Park, Mt Hotham provides visitors with a classic Australian winter wilderness with plenty of

beautiful snowgums, spectacular views and undulating mountain ridges. Hotham is easily accessible along The Great Alpine Road and even boasts its own airport with direct flights taking just 45 mins from Melbourne and 80 mins from Sydney with Qantaslink in winter. Hotham is known for a lively après ski culture, with more than 20 bars and a range of restaurants to suit all budgets plus two beautiful day spas. Mt Buller – About 250km and a 3-hour drive from Melbourne is Mount Buller village. The village is picturesquely located on one of the mountain slopes from which it takes its name. You’ll find plenty of ski-in/ski-out accommodation and the resort area can accommodate up to 7000 people, so there’s no shortage of lively atmosphere, fun bars, great restaurants and vibrant nightlife with over 30 places to choose from. There’s also a spa, cinema and plenty of shops for when you need a little downtime. Mt Baw Baw – Mount Baw Baw snowfields offer the closest downhill skiing to Melbourne; an easy 120km drive away. With 35 hectares of groomed runs, seven ski lifts, three snow play areas, 10kms of groomed x-country ski trails and unlimited terrain amongst the snowgums to explore, you will be hard pressed to find a better outdoor venue so close to Melbourne. Given the nature of the terrain and the lift network, Mt Baw Baw snowfields are ideal for the snowboarder, downhill and cross-country skier. Lake Mountain – Lake Mountain is just 120km from Melbourne, making it ideal for short and weekend trips, so it’s little wonder it’s the most visited snow resort in Australia. It specialises in crosscountry skiing and snowplay, including

tobogganing, snowshoe walking and snow bike riding. It also holds numerous events including snow sculpture competitions and its own music festival. Its unique sub-alpine environment is a great introduction to the snow and the majority of the trails are for beginners and intermediate cross-country skiers. It’s important to note, however, that snowboarding is not permitted, as Lake Mountain isn’t a traditional downhill ski resort. There’s no resort accommodation, but there are plenty of great places to stay nearby in the Yarra Valley, Marysville Triangle and Alexandra.

Snowaustralia.com is the official representing body for all that is involved with the Australian snowfields and resorts. It is a complete information hub, introducing new holiday-makers to the Australian snow experience with the choice of nine major alpine resorts in both New South Wales and Victoria. Snowaustralia.com is the online “go-to” when planning an Aussie snow trip, promising a one-stop shop as well as being simple and affordable. Snow Australia has sourced the best packages across all resorts making it more accessible and giving you the ability to compare prices, locations and accommodation to suit everyone’s needs. n

TAKING THE KIDS OUT OF SCHOOL FOR HOLIDAYS BY ALICIA RANFORD, MINING FAMILY MATTERS CO-FOUNDER (WWW.MININGFM.COM.AU)

A

huge benefit of the FIFO/DIDO lifestyle is the ability for families in mining and resources to stretch their annual leave. This doesn’t mean you get more annual leave than other families, but you do get to combine annual leave with extended R&R, which is a lovely little side-benefit of the industry. For those who don't do FIFO/DIDO, let me explain. Let’s say your husband works nine days on the mine site and then has five days off at home. He takes nine days annual leave and ends up with 19 days off (five days rostered R&R + nine days annual leave + five days rostered R&R = 19 days). I've never met a FIFO/DIDO family

who’s complained about this! So this fantastic arrangement, coupled with the fact that FIFO workers get to keep their frequent flyer points, makes for a great excuse to take a holiday. It's not always so well received by educators though. West Australian Education Minister Liz Constable recently singled out FIFO parents for criticism on the issue of taking extended holidays during term time. "The figures for student attendance show rates at schools have failed to improve, despite a government campaign to increase them, particularly those with parents who are fly-in-flyout workers who organise holidays during the school term," she told ABC Perth. "One day off when they don't have a legitimate reason is not acceptable; children are required to go to school." I have to admit, I'm one of those parents. Just this year we took our children (both early primary) out of school for a two-week trip to Bali, and we did the same last year to Thailand. We weighed up the pros and cons of taking the kids out of school and decided that time together as a family (coupled with the life experiences they would receive while on holiday) far outweighed the time missed at school. So with that in mind, here are my tips for making the most of valuable annual leave: • Write a letter to the principal well ahead of time, explaining the reason for your child’s absence from school. Forward a copy to their

class teachers too, requesting any work they might miss while away. Then, of course, ensure this gets done before you return. • Choose a destination with a different culture - an eye-opening experience will widen your children’s horizons. • Get the kids to write a journal of what they've been doing each day. Include rubbings of coins from whichever country you’re in, airline tickets and attraction ticket stubs of the places you’ve been. • Travel with another family. True, this is risky, but choose friends who have travelled before and have like-minded interests. Make sure the kids all have a good relationship and you parent in similar styles. We have found that travelling with friends actually takes some of the intense pressure off when you are in unfamiliar surroundings. And when the kids are all having fun, mum and dad can have some one-on-one time as well. Organise a swap night when your mates look after all the kids and you get a romantic night out. • If you are staying in the one place, hire a

villa. It’s cheaper than you think, especially when sharing with another family. In Asia they often come with a pool and when the kids are in bed it's downstairs for a little adult time. Cuts out the need to hire unknown babysitters or being stuck in your motel room because the kids are exhausted but its only 7.30pm. • Organise day trips. You’ll be picked up from your villa/resort and taken for a day of activities. Your guide will be an amazing source of local knowledge and will teach you some phrases to help you on your way. A quick Google before you leave will give you endless options. My advice is to wait until you arrive at your destination before booking. That way you can check the weather and make sure it’s a nice day. No point visiting that volcano if it’s covered in fog! • If travelling overseas isn’t something you’ve done before, contact a travel agent who will help guide you with your plans. They often have the cheapest deals too. We have had great success with both www.byokids.com.au and www.flightcentre.com.au. Whether you’re a FIFO/DIDO or residential family, life is busy and we all work hard - so it’s extra important to make precious time for family. I know it’s a cliché, but the kids grow up so fast. Drop Anchor at Bluewater and You’ll Never Want to Leave I f you love water, or just the thought of it, you will love Bluewater Marina, Trinity Beach. As an investment or a place to live the life, Bluewater abounds in opportunity. For those looking for a waterfront residence or valuable land buy, Bluewater has only a handful of prime, waterfront allotments available. Idyllic in the extreme, these home sites overlook the shimmery waters and white boats of the marina as well as nearby rainforest covered mountains. The remaining five lots are from 600 square metres and start from $399,000. These ‘lifestyle’ blocks are rare and represent the region’s last waterfront land development. Bluewater has just released a new offer for anyone purchasing these remaining few by pledging to make up to $39,000 in interest rate payments. If you are fortunate in owning a boat, Bluewater’s world class, 108 berth marina provides a high security and quality mooring. Even if you don’t own a boat, a berth at Bluewater Marina is a prime investment worth considering – offering excellent year round returns underscored by five star management and maintenance. Bluewater Marina is Cairns’ only freehold

marina. That in itself is unique. In fact, nothing compares to this state-of-the-art facility with deepwater ocean access, Cairns’ only cyclone-rating and the peace of mind that comes with a fully secure and managed marina. These attributes were well proven in Cyclone Yasi last year. The 108 single and multi-hulled marina berths are 10m, 12m and 15m berths to suit boats between 40 and 60 feet and come complete with 240 volt, two phase power. Three phase power is available on 18 foot berths. Bluewater’s marina berths are highly regarded and in hot demand especially given Australia currently experiencing a shortage of marina

berths. In December last year, Bluewater Marina recorded 100 per cent occupancy, testament to its popularity and this nationwide trend. Increasingly, Bluewater’s boat owners are changing the way they live their life on the water by venturing less and choosing to stay moored at Bluewater. Why you may ask? It’s all about the lifestyle – quietude and serenity in this picturesque location. Bluewater Marina has just released a new investment opportunity for the first six berths sold that provides a $30,000 saving as well as payment of levies for the first three years. This represents an enormous saving that can be used in conjunction with Bluewater’s very attractive and affordable 99 year lease that is available from $99,000. In the future, Bluewater’s marina precinct will, when developed, encompass luxury waterfront homes and a lifestyle precinct comprising retail, food and beverage outlets, villa homes and apartments, all overlooking the marina. With timber boardwalks connecting all facilities within the precinct, this hub will become a home away from home for residents and visitors to the region who want to truly experience the beauty of tropical living. n

On the Northern Beaches of Cairns, Bluewater not only offers your family an idyllic Australian costal lifestyle that’s close to great schools, shops and restaurants – you get to come home to the ultimate playground with pristine beaches and the Great Barrier Reef on your doorstep. Bluewater is an investment in your family’s future and your lifestyle away from work. Discover Bluewater for yourself. www.facebook.com/Bluewater.BRP

A quick review of its standard features reveals the new ClubSport to be anything but a “base” model. Powered by HSV’s 6.2 litre, LS3, Generation 4 V8 which delivers a massive 317kW of power and 550 Nm of torque, the ClubSport effectively includes all the major features of the outgoing MY12 ClubSport R8 model with the exception of HSV’s Enhanced Driver Interface (EDI), which will be available as a factory-fitted option. The new ClubSport also picks up HSV’s 20” Pentagon alloy wheels to complement an impressive list of standard features which includes sport touring suspension, electronic stability control with competition mode, 4-piston brake package, satellite navigation and rear park assist with reversing camera. The new ClubSport will be launched at a maximum recommended "drive-away” price of just $65K for the manual version, which represents approximately $7,500 of added value when compared with the outgoing MY12 HSV ClubSport R8.

HSV Maloo Adopting a similar strategy to the ClubSport, HSV is also re-introducing the Maloo to the HSV range. Also powered by HSV’s 6.2 litre, LS3, Generation 4 V8 delivering 317kW of power and 550 Nm of torque, the new Maloo includes all the major features of the outgoing MY12 Maloo R8 model with the exception of EDI, and the remote locking hard tonneau and performance sailplane. In place of the hard tonneau will be a versatile, soft tonneau cover, offering a level of storage flexibility that is sure to be well received by the trade community. For those preferring the hard tonneau and performance sailplane, these can be optioned for $3,990. As with the ClubSport, the new Maloo picks up the larger, 20” Pentagon alloy wheels to complement its standard sport touring suspension, 4-piston brake package, performance seats in cloth trim with 4-way electric adjustment on the driver’s seat,

satellite navigation and rear park assist with reversing camera. The Maloo will be launched at a maximum recommended "drive-away” price of just $58,990 for the manual version, which represents outstanding value. n

MINING FAMILIES

ROCK

The world’s first self-help book for mining families, is being launched Australia-wide

A

new 176-page book offers professional advice and practical strategies for the growing number of mining workers coping with fly-in/fly-out, drive-in/ drive-out or life in isolated mining communities. Mining Families Rock features professional advice by a psychologist, personal anecdotes from mining family members, and a raft of simple tips for keeping relationships healthy and kids happy. The book is also aimed at Australians hoping to tap into the mining boom, with timely advice on where to start when you want a job in mining and what to expect from life on a mine site. It’s published by the award-winning online support network Mining Family Matters, with 70 chapters including:

• Staying connected when you work away • Helping children (from toddlers to teens) cope • Using time wisely on precious days together • Rebooting your sex life in a mining marriage • Beating the 'black day' blues >>

• Building a new life in a mining town • Mine site etiquette and what to pack for your first shift

Sample tips from Mining Families Rock COPING IN THE EARLY DAYS OF FIFO/ DIDO: We all cope differently when things get tough. Some need more contact; others prefer to withdraw. If your partner seems distant and keen to get off the phone in the early days, try not to take it personally. HOW TO COPE WHEN YOU’RE MISSING YOUR KIDS: Remember that your children will only worry and panic about dad being away for Christmas or a big birthday if the adults seem to be worried or panicky. Look at this as a great opportunity to model resilience and problem-solving skills. BEATING THE BLACK DAY BLUES: Black days are a bit like Mondayitis, only on a bigger scale. For some miners, it’s the final day of

“MINING FAMILIES ROCK HAS BEEN CAREFULLY COMPILED NOT ONLY TO HELP PEOPLE THROUGH ANY CHALLENGES THEY FACE AS A RESULT OF THEIR WORK CHOICES, BUT ALSO TO HELP PEOPLE FEEL GOOD ABOUT THOSE CHOICES.” their time off. For others it’s the actual day of travel back to the mine site. Next time you are having a black day, take the time to think about how you feel (sad, anxious or stressed) and how you are acting. Sometimes, even just noticing your black day thoughts can help. MINING MUMS WHO WORK AWAY: Make sure guilt doesn’t affect your parenting style. If you do feel guilty about working away or long hours on the job, offload to supportive friends and/or family to get it off your chest, rather than changing how you interact with your kids. DON’T LET MONEY MAKE YOU MISERABLE: Don’t alter your commitments (i.e. new house or bigger loan repayments) until you are sure that mining works for you. FIFO/DIDO families don’t do too well when they feel stuck with the lifestyle. WORKING AWAY – HELPING CHILDREN TO COPE: Allow your children to talk about how they feel, and offer an extra cuddle when they’re sad. Avoid saying things like “be brave” or “don’t be silly” because they might start hiding feelings from you, thinking they are unacceptable feelings to talk about. HELPING TEENAGERS TO COPE: some FIFO/DIDO parents feel a little guilty or sorry

for their kids, and so expect less of them. Strangely enough, this can be bad for their self esteem. Encouraging and even expecting your teenager to take part in family activities and help around the house is not only good for their confidence; it’s great for setting up opportunities for communication. SEX AND THE MINING COUPLE: If you have differing libidos, don’t fall into the trap of thinking the ‘problem’ rests with the person who wants less or more sex. Setting the issue up as one person’s problem just makes it harder to tackle and increases the tension, frustration, guilt and blame. Try approaching your differing sex drives as a team, working together to break your ‘sex cycles’. MARRIAGE BREAKDOWNS AND INFIDELITY: If you have a strong relationship based on mutual respect, interests and love for each other (and you can openly discuss any worries or issues as they arise) there is no reason the FIFO/DIDO lifestyle should negatively impact your marriage or partnership. MINE CAMP ETIQUETTE: Get yourself clean and tidy before breakfast and dinner in the mess hall. No-one wants to sit beside someone with half the day’s work still on their overalls. n THE

SURV GUIDEIVAL Mining Familie s FOR

Mining Family Matters co-founder, Alicia Ranford says Mining Families Rock has been carefully compiled not only to help people through any challenges they face as a result of their work choices, but also to help people feel good about those choices. "The mining boom offers great opportunities for families, but after six moves in a decade and eight years of fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) I know it can also put intense pressure on couples trying to maintain a strong relationship and raise happy, healthy kids," Alicia says. "Great communication is the absolute key, and hopefully this book will start a lot of conversations on many personal levels." Mining Family Matters psychologist Angie Willcocks says there is a lot of attention in Australia on the negative impacts of FIFO rosters on families, and it’s time to turn the focus onto how to make these couples more resilient. "Working away from home is a fact of life for a growing number of Australian families and it can be a positive experience so long as couples are very clear about goals and potential problems up front,” Angie said. “They need to tackle any issues as a united team and regularly reassess how the whole family is coping." Mining Families Rock is written by mining mum Alicia Ranford, psychologist Angie Willcocks and journalist Lainie Anderson. It’s priced at $24.95 and is available from the Mining Family Matters website, www.miningfm.com.au. The creation of a comprehensive self-help book follows the success of MiningFM’s 32page Survival Guide for Mining Families. More than 50,000 copies have been sold to mining companies Australia-wide since March 2011.

Bamboo fabric is arguably the most sustainable choice for clothing and homewares and the list of its environmental and fashion benefits is extensive and impressive. The fastest growing plant on the planet (and one third faster than the fastest growing tree), bamboo can grow to upwards of one metre per day. Botanically a grass and not a tree, it sends up new shoots after harvesting, eliminating the need for replanting. Bamboo is perfect for regenerating degraded areas – it is the fastest growing canopy and generates more oxygen than equivalent stand of trees. n

MONEY MATTERS

FINANCIAL AND LIFESTYLE BENEFITS OF

RESORT STYLE LIVING WITH MANY ADVANTAGES PERFECTLY SUITED TO THE FIFO LIFESTYLE, MANY IN THE MINING INDUSTRY ARE TURNING TO RESORT STYLE LIVING.

A

ffordable homes and rent, plenty of facilities, a tight knit community and the highest of security means resort style living is luring more and more FIFO workers. One such example is El Caballo Lifestyle Village located in the hills of Avon Valley under an hour from Perth city and less than half an hour from Midland. According to El Caballo Director Matthew Pavlinovich, the village offers quality built homes in a friendly gated community for the over 45's. “With rental and sale opportunities and prices well below median, a home here for your fly-in-fly-out readers may well be ideal.” he said. Another reason the resort lifestyle may appeal to FIFO workers is the security it offers for their partners who are left home alone for longer periods. “Security is of the utmost importance here at El Caballo,” Matthew said. “Access

is granted – or denied - via intercom, so the guest buzzes through to the resident and speaks to them directly.” Resort villages are also great for entertainment offering many facilities for residents to keep themselves busy. El Caballo Lifestyle Village, which is surrounded by an 18 hole golf course, has an indoor spa and sauna, a cocktail lounge and wine bar, tennis courts, bowling green,

fully equipped gym, cinema and even an arts and crafts centre and workshop. Also worth mentioning is the tight knit community feel that comes hand in hand with lifestyle village living which may be appealing to FIFO workers as they have additional support and friendships close by. What every property investor needs to know… Your investment could be under-performing – here’s a tip to make it earn more than it’s currently doing…

W

hen it comes to investment properties, you hear two philosophies – renovate and make a profit or by contrast – rent it out and don’t spend a cent unless you absolutely have to. In the current property market both philosophies could be wrong and if you follow them you could lose money or your investment rental property could become an underachiever. The reality of the property market at the moment: •

Capital growth in most of Australia is slow and may stay that way for another 12 months so short term profit is unlikely. The rental market is running gangbusters for well presented properties. Rental prices have risen markedly since 2010.

Take for example an investor client of ours who bought a fairly tired 3 bedroom 1960s style house on a 432sqm block in a smart suburb that would rent for $350 a week.

After an assessment by our property management experts on its potential, he spent approx $30,000 in refurbishing the kitchen, bathroom and laundry, installing built in robes, repainting the interior and rendering the outside to give it a more modern look.

Don’t over-capitalise for the locality

You must not spend if there’s no benefit ie don’t be driven by the heart

The improved rental yield needs to cover the upgrade within 4 years

A gas oven was installed because tenants prefer gas. The upgraded house has been let for $550/ week giving an improved rental yield of $200/ week.

Renovating can also have secondary benefits:

So is that a good proposition? Calculations show the $30,000 plus interest on the loan will be paid off by the extra rental within 2-3 years – when tax deductible allowances come into consideration.

If you have an investment property, you’ll want to hold it for a while – so what’s your plan to have it produce the best return?

That’s a great payback! But it gets even better…

If the property’s condition is becoming rundown – and a lot of rental properties are this way, investing in a renovation to earn extra rental income can be the best way to go in a strong rental market. Improvements can yield a substantial rental profit.

The renovated house was leased to an excellent tenant very quickly

Because the important areas were brand new the tenant signed a 3 year lease with options

The owner had the house valued shortly after showing an increase of $50,000 in 6 months-even in this market

We go by 3 rules:

Reduced maintenance costs

Smart properties attract better tenants

Tenants look after nice properties

Vacancies reduce

The resale value increases

Advice on an investment property’s potential to earn more is just one part of our comprehensive property management service. Call us now on 6389 7777 and ask for Andrew or Dee or email: andrew@gowre.com.au We’re specialists in making property investment profitable!

How to get the best performance from your investment property… To most Perth real estate agents, property management is a minor part of their business.

Quarterly inspections with detailed written reports.

Gow Property is different. We specialise in investment property management.

We suggest things you can do to your property to maximise your tax deductions and depreciation allowances

We keep you informed of issues that could detract from the capital gain potential of your property.

If you decide to sell we can offer your property to our large database of existing investors.

If you have an investment property you need to be assured that your property manager is fully dedicated to your objective: to get the best possible return from your investment over the period in which you hold it: What we do: •

Maximises your rental possibilities by monitoring rental levels throughout the area.

Select tenants after thorough reference checks

Implement a policy of zero tolerance to errant tenants

Whether you’re a new investor, tired of managing your own property or totally dissatisfied with your current management company, do yourself a favour and find out how Gow Property Management does it better for more than 1,000 property owners in Perth. Call us now!!! 6389 7777.

A Swiss Cheese Approach to Decluttering Your Home BROUGHT TO YOU BY WWW.HOMEDESIGNDIRECTORY.COM.AU

THE FIRST BITE When decluttering the first rule is use the Swiss Cheese approach. Don't look at the overwhelming entirety of decluttering your house. Look at it one area at a time. Make a mental list. For example the linen press, the kitchen, the boy's room. MANAGEABLE CHUNKS Break the areas up into manageable chunks once again, for example, clothes, toys and furniture. Look at these areas separately keeping in mind: will it fit them next season? Does the furniture layout work efficiently with their maturing requirements? And what needs to be on show and what does not? SORT INTO 4 GROUPS Once you have reorganised the

furniture and put aside what is no longer required, you are ready to sort into four groups. 1. Garage sale/flea market sale items 2. Online sale items 3. Family or friends 4. Charity Flea market sales: A great way to sell your items and generally more successful than a stand-alone garage sale. Many communities have these events regularly, and they're great if you want a little cash for the things you might have given away. Selling online: Another way to get good money for your unwanted items, but be warned - unless you have something that will sell for at least $200, it isn't worth doing once you take into account postage and online sale fees.

Family/friends: Friends and family are a great resource when you're decluttering. Charity store: This is my last stop and it is reassuring that they will take most of want you haven't been able to get rid of at this point. Make sure that you take these items directly to a charity store, as clothing bins for example are owned by rag wholesalers so non-fabric items usually end up in landfill. Most charity stores cannot resell electrical items, for safety reasons, and even brand new items will not be accepted. Decluttering and organising doesn't need to be an overwhelming undertaking. It can provide you with extra mental clarity in an otherwise overwhelming day. n

the materials. Use a peg board as they are lightweight, easy to install and have pre-made holes for attaching the hooks. With a pencil, mark the outline of each tool you want on your peg board panel. Also use a ruler so that your tools are level and straight.

provides seamless hybrid grid/off grid power single & 3 phase output up to 60KW

Paint outlines and attach a frame 2. Once you have measured and drawn your tool outlines, use a thin paintbrush and black paint to paint over the outlines. Once paint has dried, never mount the peg board directly to the wall as you won’t have adequate space behind the panel to insert your hooks. Therefore you must attach a frame so when you mount the framed panel to the wall studs, your hooks can slot in neatly.

Attaching your board 3. Drill and secure the peg board on the wall’s frame, by driving the screws through the panel and frame for a good solid installation. Make sure to level both sides with a builder’s level. It’s now time to attach hooks and nails to hold the tools in place, completing the perfect tool storage rack. T

here is no doubt about it, the year is flying past! As you seek to clear your in-trays and inboxes, you can feel that the pressure is mounting up! There seem to be so many tasks that you need to complete before you knock off – but so little time to do them in! At times, everyone’s life will be out of balance. In order to realise our goals, some sacrifice is necessary. As Stephen Covey put it: “It’s easy to say NO, when there is a deeper YES burning inside,” however sometimes that deeper YES can be business tasks, meetings and reports and these can often be at the expense of family,

Stressed Out?

friends or you own health. You need to identify times when your body is requiring you to be “switched on”, and respect the down times so your body can recuperate. Too much adrenaline can lead to stress and anxiety! Give yourself an honest and realistic evaluation of the tasks that are possible between now and the next week and prioritise your time so that you can settle into your well earned break and actually enjoy it.

When you do not exercise, you do not expend as many calories, and you will not sleep as well at night. 2) Never skip meals. When you do not eat, it sends a message to your body to shut down your metabolism, this in turn make you feel very sluggish 3) Place yourself as a priority over your break and consider gaining some real down-time. If you verbally let your loved ones know that you need a good rest, they will understand much more.

Consider this advice to get you through to your next break stress-free: 1) Make sure that you continue to exercise.

When you relax and recharge your body and mind, you will come back much stronger and more productive. n

Shopping for

Cheap Goods and Bargains BY ALEX WILSON OF SAVINGSGUIDE.COM.AU

I

f you are looking to save money on larger purchases (or on small purchases for that matter) the power of pre shopping and shopping around online can really help you find those money saving bargains. The internet has many sites that can help you find the cheap goods and bargains you are after, all from the comfort of your home computer. This is not to say you have to buy the goods online, instead you can shop around online and find the best prices and bargains from retailers you can physically visit in your local CBD, effectively avoiding making a transaction online while still getting the best price you can find in your local area.

followed by ascertaining which was the cheapest – that way when I got to the city, instead of walking to six different shops and searching, I was able to walk directly to the shop and pick up my new camera at the best possible price.

Pre-Shopping Tips To help you save money on your shopping, it is wise to first think about the following points to ensure you are actually about to buy something you really need. • Is this actually what I am looking for? • Is the price within my budget? • How am I going to pay for this item? Cash, cheque or credit card? • Have I shopped around enough on the price of this item? • Will I regret this purchase? Is it an impulse buy? Cheap Goods and Bargains In order to save money on your purchases, you need to know where to begin to find the best deals on the product you are after. It has become the standard for major retailers to release their sales and cheap goods that are about to be on sale via online catalogues, which then get submitted to major online catalogue sites

54

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

that allow you to flip through the pages and select items easily that you wish to buy in person. Recently I used a website where you can create a pre-shop list to win $10,000 and learn how researching your purchases before hand can save you a lot of money. I was able to find the camera I wanted at six different camera stores in the city

Other Pre-Shop things to consider Price is not the only thing you need to consider when researching or pre shopping for an item. Remember to take the following points into account also: • Do you have specific requirements of size, weight, usage or durability? • What are the costs of any servicing or consumable goods? • Are replacement parts easily available? • Is after-sales support available? • How do you find cheap goods? We would love to hear about how you find cheap goods and bargains using the internet or the like. Is there another way that people can save money and know they are finding the best deal? Write to us at info@inflightmagazine.com.au and let us know! n

Handling Criticism BY KELLY MANIATIS, REGISTERED PSYCHOLOGIST AND MEMBER OF THE AUSTRALIAN PSYCHOLOGICAL SOCIETY

W

hen we are criticised, it’s easy to feel defensive. After all, criticism implies that we’ve done something wrong, or that we’re not meeting the performance levels we should. Well, the good news is that no one is perfect! All of us make mistakes at some point or another. Think about it: if you’ve never made a mistake, it probably means that you’ve never pushed yourself to work outside your comfort zone; you’ve never taken risks; or that you’ve never stuck your neck out for anything. That’s no way to develop your skills or career! There are some constructive responses to reasonable criticism: Adjust your Attitude: Start by looking at criticism as an opportunity to learn and do better. The person offering the feedback is usually keen for you to improve your performance. You can make sure that the conversation starts on the right note by approaching the situation with an open mind, and by having a sense of gratitude that someone’s taking the time to help you. Resist the temptation to be defensive! Disconnect: It’s important to realise that fair criticism is about something you’ve done or said, not about you personally. Try to disconnect your personal feelings from the criticism, so that you can see the truth in what the other person is saying. Really Listen: Make sure that you actually listen to what is being said. It can be easy to just nod in apparent agreement, while in reality you’re busy thinking about what you’re going to say as soon as the other person has stopped talking. That isn’t really listening: you need to listen actively in order to understand just what it is that they’re saying. Don’t Respond Immediately: Always take the time to formulate your thoughts, and make >>

sure you’re calm before you say anything. When we fire back immediately, we often say things we regret and which can make us look unprofessional. If you find that you need more than a few seconds to calm down, say so. Ask for some time to formulate your response, and come back with it later. And if the criticism was received by email, don’t press the reply button straight away! Paraphrase the Criticism: Repeating what the person has just said in your own words is great way to make sure that you’ve understood them fully. Use a non-aggressive approach here. Remain calm, and rephrase what you think they’ve said in an unthreatening way. You might say, “So if I understand you correctly, you think that…” Find the Facts: If the person offering criticism isn’t being specific enough, then ask questions. It’s important to find out what the real issue is. If your boss says, “I didn’t like your last report”, then get details. What didn’t they like about it? Admit Mistakes People who own up to their mistakes are respected and admired. When you freely take responsibility for something that hasn’t

“Start by looking at criticism as an opportunity to learn and do better. “

Come up with a plan for how you’re going to fix the situation and avoid the same mistake next time. Be Thankful After you’ve gained perspective on the experience, thank the person for taking the time to give you feedback. Many people feel uncomfortable giving criticism, just as many people are uncomfortable receiving it. Explain how it has helped you, and what you’ve learned from the experience.

KEY POINTS There’s a big difference in fair and unfair criticism, but sometimes the line between the two is hard to see. Fair criticism can

worked out as you would have wished, you’re demonstrating professionalism and maturity. If you’re in the wrong, admit it and apologise. Agreeing with your critic puts you both on common ground and can often foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and open communication. Learn from the Experience Fair criticism can help us improve our performance, if we take the time to learn from it. So, spend some time thinking about what happened and what your critic said.

help you grow and learn, while unfair criticism can drag you down. When it comes to handling fair criticism, realise that this is an opportunity. Keep an open mind and where possible, be willing to own up to any mistakes you’ve made. Realise that the critic is addressing an action or situation, not you personally. Make an effort to listen actively and understand what they’re saying, then plan how you’ll improve things and move on.

The Ultimate

Golfing Gadget GOLFBUDDY LAUNCH VOICE, A TALKING GPS RANGEFINDER AND A WORLD FIRST IN GOLF DISTANCE MEASUREMENT DEVICES.

O

n 1st August, GolfBuddy - the leading developer of golf distance measuring device (DMD) solutions and new generation golf GPS rangefinders announced the launch of its newest model, the GolfBuddy Voice, a talking golf GPS. Following on from its hugely successful global launch in January 2012 at the USA PGA Show in Orlando, Jamie Stark, GolfBuddy Australia General Manager, said the GolfBuddy Voice was revolutionary to the game. "For hundreds of years golfers have relied on the human voice of caddies to dispense vital distance information on the course,”

Mr Stark said. “GolfBuddy has taken that timehonoured tradition and re-invented it for the technological age.” “The GolfBuddy Voice really is just like having a caddie with you." “Coupled with our experience and proven track record as demonstrated by the global success of our touch screen GPS products - the World and Platinum models - we are perfectly positioned to offer golfers the essential data they need to play better golf,” Mr Stark continued. “We have already >>

witnessed phenomenal global demand and an unprecedented appetite for the Voice and are looking forward to offering it to Australian golfers.” “It is quite simply the hottest gadget in golf.” A major breakthrough in the golf GPS market, Voice is the first of its kind featuring audio capabilities offering golfers the ultimate golfing experience. It is the smallest and lightest golf GPS on the market and the easy to use unit not only provides accurate distances to front, centre and back of the green of more than 35,000 golf courses worldwide, including around 1,000 Australian courses, it actually tells you. Distances are shown numerically on a small screen, alongside the hole number and par. Furthermore, GolfBuddy’s Auto Course & Hole Recognition technology and 24-channel GPS receiver, means the Voice offers superior precision because it always knows where it is automatically locating your position on the course and hole you are playing.

64

Issue 23

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

The Voice’s Rotating Green View always ensures distances are given directly from your angle of approach and players can also track how far they have hit the ball with the Measure Distance function. It gives golfers the option to change from yard to metre readings, tells the time and has eight hours of battery life via a rechargeable lithium battery. Another major development is the Voice’s size. As small as a golf ball, yet light enough to be comfortably clipped onto a hat or visor, the Voice weighs a mere 30 grams and measures 4.3cm by 4.3cm. Its simplistic design means it is straightforward and easy to use and has been designed to be operated and enjoyed by golfers at any level and of all ages. The GolfBuddy Voice is more than just an innovative measuring gadget for golfers, another major drawcard of the Voice is that it complies with the rules of golf’s governing bodies, The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA).

As with all of GolfBuddy's GPS Rangefinders, the Voice is 100% fee-free with no annual subscriptions or course download charges to pay after initial purchase. It comes preloaded with over 35,000 worldwide courses, features a 40,000 course memory capacity and can be easily updated by connecting to a PC via a micro USB port for synching when new courses are added to GolfBuddy’s comprehensive global database or when course maps are updated. “In the competitive market of golf rangefinders, many claim to walk the walk and others talk the talk, however in GolfBuddy’s case, we are the only ones who indisputably do both,” Mr Stark said. “Furthermore, it is the simplicity and effectiveness of the Voice that is generating the phenomenal worldwide reaction.” The GolfBuddy Voice is available www.gpsgolfbuddy.com.au for RRP $220. n

WHAT’S DIFFERENT OF THE MINDSET GOING INTO THIS YEAR? No real difference in the mindset, so just trying to play the best footy that we can. Looking for an improvement every week. But the mindset doesn’t change too much. Normally the expectations from outside of the group may change, but internally, everything’s the same. ARE YOU HOPING TO MATCH LAST YEAR? It’s not so much about matching last year, it’s about improving as a team. So improving as an individual, I’m sure guys would have their own goals, but certainly as a team we want to improve, we want to get better defensively, we want to

get better offensively. All those sorts of things. YOU SAID EARLIER THIS YEAR YOU WERE CONFIDENT WITH HOW THE EAGLES WILL GO, WITH THE INJURIES THIS YEAR, ARE YOU STILL CONFIDENT? We expect to play some good footy. We expect to win plenty of games of footy so that’s the aim in terms of our focus. We think all our players can have an impact so yeah we’re really comfortable with our forward line. We’re comfortable that we’ve got plenty of depth there. We have plenty of players who can kick a good score for us. n

How Art Gains Value Part 3 BY CELIA BERRELL

The Best Adventure We’ve embarked upon a journey that’s our precious gift of life. And celebrate its glory, filled with beauty, love and strife. For now the seas are placid and the sky’s a radiant blue. With joy and faith, we take each step. Your Light will see us through. Poem inspired by Davson’s painting, On the Ark of Salvation (inset).

On the Ark of Salvation

W

hether you are viewing a painting for its inspiration or investment potential, there are ways that enhance the appreciation process - both for the viewer and the painting. How can we really tell if a painting is good or not? The beauty or impact of a painting can be a very personal thing. But there’s more to valuable art than just a pretty face.

The Power and the Passion Myth, art and spirituality lie at the heart of many cultures. Religious reverence has powered some of man’s most fantastical achievements, particularly in art and architecture. From the Egyptian Pyramids to the Sistine Chapel, regardless of our personal beliefs, we truly stand in awe. There is certainly plenty of art that reflects beliefs and stories in such passionate ways that just viewing them somehow connects us.

70

Davson in her art studio hallway

Whether they are cave drawings, a canvas of Christianity or an Aboriginal Dreamtime depiction, they will be images that show and share, reflecting how someone somewhere cares. There was a time when wealth was

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

lavishly bestowed on spiritual or religious art, particularly in eras such as Renaissance Europe and ancient Egypt. In comparison, our Indigenous cultures see the riches of storytelling as paramount to the art’s value. But then spirituality is not about monetary richness. It is more about fulfilling our lives and souls. In our modern Western world at least, the artists most dedicated to creating images that uplift the soul and inspire positive passion for life are frequently generous artisans who are doing it out of love. Perhaps this is a predominantly feminine trait, with gentleness and joy being the reward as well the gift. Spiritual art is a diverse genre whose expression gives us all the freedom to fly and dream for a greater good. It is also again attracting a return to high wealth investment. Are we becoming tired of confronting, aggressive or art that shocks or depresses the senses?

Many great artists have created spiritually uplifting paintings. Can you match the artist with the title of the painting they created?

Artists of the Ark Discussing artist’s spiritual beliefs tends to sound like a testament to their good behaviour! None of us are perfect, but two words aptly describe Davson for a character reference and her spirituality: generosity and gratitude. Her art, particularly since the mid 1990s, has been created with the intention of uplifting and inspiring others in their faith. Believing we can make a difference in the world may sound presumptuous, but if we are prepared to give of ourselves in the attempt, and meet like-minded people along the way, it might just work. And for Davson it did - and still does. For example, her environmental and world peace charity ventures and initiatives over the past two decades contributed towards many improvements and changes in our global community, as well as helped to bring out the best in everyone they touched. In 2002, Davson also became a Founding Patron of the Multifaith Association of Newcastle & Hunter Region. Finding common ground between various faiths, the association organised functions that

A. On the Ark of Salvation B. Madonna of Port Lligat C. The Virgin and Child with five Angels D. Pieta

celebrated the region’s cultural diversity and its compatibilities. On a personal level, and as a member of Sukyo Mahikari since 1995, Davson is comfortable with faith having different flavours. Sukyo Mahikari includes people of different religious preferences that see their participation in sharing the Light of God and all creation as a natural progression from their foundation beliefs. And gratitude is a key component of any form of spirituality. Davson incorporates these beliefs into her art, and with some surprising results. The more dedicated to inspiring others she became, the higher the values of her paintings also became. Now several of her major works are re-selling for substantive seven figure sums. One of the highlights of Davson’s spirituality and artistic career was when her painting With Gratitude Comes Growth was gifted by the Australia-Oceania Region of Sukyo Mahikari for the collection of the Hikaru Memorial Museum Takayama Japan in 1996. Then from February to July 2003, her flagship of spiritual art On The Ark of Salvation became the frontcover illustration for six monthly copies of the

Offering Gratitude Together

Sukyo Mahikari International Journal. As an artist who works mainly on commission, On The Ark of Salvation is one of only a handful of personal major works created by Davson. Since the painting’s creation in 1999, the image has acquired an impressive provenance through publications and major retrospective exhibitions of Davson’s art in public galleries. In 2011, it sold for $1.3 million, making it the highest valued painting by a living Australian artist. Her inspirational paintings are now a highly valued commodity, and a new art movement is subsequently taking shape. On 3rd November 2011 in Takayama Japan, the Arkists or Artists of the Ark was formally pronounced with Davson as the acknowledged leader and artistic inspiration. The movement invites all artists who create in any medium for the uplifting joy and gratitude of their spiritual beliefs to become connected. Could this be a resurgence of spiritual art rising to the role of lead violin instead of second fiddle in the wonderful orchestra of art and life?

Contact Davson Art management to acquire her art from $5,000 and upwards; to learn more about why Davson’s art has experienced better than approximately 20% per annum growth for collector / investors for more than two decades; or to find out more about the Artists of the Ark.

re your feeling exhausted and suffering from fatigue? Do you do shift work and wake up in the dark for fly-in/fly-out schedules? Like most mine workers, nurses, police officers and sports people you endure a long and demanding schedule that means you may need to start your day early. This constant routine of waking up early, especially during the dark winter months, can eventually take its toll on your performance as your circadian rhythm falls out of synch with your day leaving you feeling tired and sluggish. Wake Up Bright is a Perth-based company with sole importation and distribution rights to Lumie Bodyclock Alarms Australia-wide. As such they can offer the Bodyclock Starter 30 to you at a very competitive price of $149.95 including GST, on a one week’s free trial. A Lumie Bodyclock, also known as a Wake-up-light or Dawn simulator, is an alarm clock that wakes you up with a gradual brightening light, naturally re-setting your sleep/wake cycle to help you feel refreshed, alert and energised all day. The sunrise

effect is a natural cue for your body to reduce the production of sleep hormones, such as melatonin and gradually increase the levels of those that help you get up and go (cortisol). Waking up with a Lumie Bodyclock everyday will help to keep your sleep/wake cycle on track as your natural circadian rhythm is reset. This in return will help to boost mood, productivity, energy levels and well being. Using the Bodyclock at night with the fading sunset is the natural way to wind down. GME 2012 Cater Care APPROACHES Services

ith gold mining holding its own and the nickel sector relatively stable, the prospects for WA’s Goldfields look sound as the region readies itself for Goldfields Mining Expo (GME), to be held over three days, from October 30 to November 1, at the Kalgoorlie Boulder Racecourse. The biennial exhibition, organised by Reed Mining Events in conjunction with the Kalgoorlie Boulder Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KBCCI), is already on track for another strong show. KBCCI Chief Executive Officer Hugh Gallagher said while the region is experiencing continuing challenges including attracting and retaining quality mining personnel, transportation infrastructure constraints, increasing costs and uncertainty regarding various mining taxes, the general trend for its mining sector is sound. “While skilled labour availability is showing a negative trend, with welleducated and trained employees moving out of the region for higher-paying positions in the north of WA, the quality of life for people living and working in the Goldfields is considered a plus,” he said. LOOKING FOR A LOW RISK, LOW MAINTENANCE COMMERCIAL PROPERTY INVESTMENT UNDER $100,000? Between a rock and a hard place - is it that hard to find a geologist?

I

n 2010, the Minerals Tertiary Education Council estimated an annual short fall of approximately 600 geologists in the domestic minerals sector in the five years to 2015. Hard evidence of this is reported by explorers and miners experiencing critical vacancies in key skill brackets and a shortfall in field focused, ‘boots-on-ground’ geoscientists. Digirock, renowned as the premier supplier of field trained, boots-on-ground geologists, has helped alleviate some of this shortfall through the provision of specialist contract geologists to the exploration sector. To further assist clients, Digirock has recently established a permanent placement arm, aptly named Quality Recruitment Services (QRS). “Quality Recruitment Services is a natural extension to the niche services Digirock has traditionally offered,” said Digirock Recruitment Geologist, Melissa Higgins. “Being a geologist, I work for my geologist clients, assisting job seekers find their next career progression, and assisting companies find the geo with an understanding of their geological terrain and operational requirements.” With 140 accumulated years of industry networks and experience to draw from within Digirock, Quality Recruitment Services punches well above its weight for service provision and placements. “We are continually pleased with the dedication Melissa shows to her client geologists and companies and her resultant success,” said Managing Director Peta Libby. “Mel is always looking for the best suited opportunity for companies and geologists alike. “If an opportunity doesn’t exist, she’ll make one. “Along with her geological background, tenacity would be the key strength she brings to the team.” To explore permanent staffing options, positions vacant or discuss the range of services offered by Digirock, call (08) 9472 6441 or visit: www.digirock.com.au n

NGARDA CIVIL AND MINING

T

he demand for local Indigenous employees in the mining industry, particularly in WA, has risen to unprecedented levels. In strategic response, mining companies are increasingly committed to attracting, recruiting and training Indigenous workers. This process is a valuable investment into a business, but complex issues can slow the process: requirements to train, house and address the health issues of indigenous employees can prove time-intensive, costly and culturally challenging. Ngarda, Australia’s largest owned and operated Indigenous contracting company, is uniquely placed to assist mining companies in meeting their Indigenous employment goals while delivering real benefits to Aboriginal people. The company’s extensive experience in civil and mining projects has directly led to the training, employment and development of over 2,000 people, most of which are Aboriginal, since the company began over 10 years ago. Ngarda’s Cultural Awareness Training and new Indigenous Mentoring programs can provide critical services not only for Indigenous employment but also long-term engagement and inclusion. Ngarda’s projects are largely concentrated in the Pilbara, including completed and active projects in Pannawonica, Karratha, Yarrie, Paraburdoo and Port Hedland. Its largest current project is Yarrie Iron Ore: conducted in partnership with BHP Billiton, the whole-of-mine project has a contract value of $300 million and employs about 200 staff. Ngarda chief executive officer Dan Tenardi said the recruitment of experienced Indigenous people who were suited to local conditions had a two-pronged effect. “Through solid relationships, Ngarda is uniquely positioned to provide ‘job-ready’ Indigenous workers on various site operations,” Mr Tenardi said. “This not only puts us at a competitive advantage, but has also enabled us to build the capability and capacity of the local Aboriginal population, so they can continue to develop within their communities.” To find out more, go to www.ngarda.com.au n

When is a bank like a mobile provider?

W

hen they don’t tell you they have a cheaper mortgage product than the one you are on! Now is the time to think about your mortgage in the same way as you do with your mobile phone plan – suspiciously! How many of us have had the experience of getting a massive mobile phone bill only to find out that your provider or an alternative has a plan which is far cheaper? You change plans, however are still stuck with the prior bill as unfair as it feels to be. Well the same circumstances can often apply to your mortgage and those numbers can make that phone bill look insignificant by comparison. Considering your home loan is probably the largest debt that you will ever have and for most of us it’s paid in “after tax” dollars, any ongoing savings can really add up. If we can understand that many banks save their best rate offerings to attract new clients, it is a very worthwhile exercise to keep a constant watch on what your bank is offering in the market as well as what is available from other mortgage providers. A saving of just .25% on a $500,000 mortgage over 10 years is $12,500, so it is worthwhile keeping constant watch. Just like your mobile phone plan, don’t find yourself having paid more interest than you needed to for the past few years. SHOTCRETING SUCCESS

P

YBAR has recently completed a unique shotcreting project for Mancala at Bass Metals’ Fossey Mine located in Tasmania. The project was to create a ‘plug’ which would hold back a considerable amount of water in the mine. This particular type of ‘plug’ is only the third time in the world and has never been completed in Australia. The project commenced immediately and was completed within 10 days due to PYBAR’s ability to mobilise straight away. PYBAR was chosen for the contract due to a referral from a former client who was on site in Tasmania, when the issue was discussed. The team of three from PYBAR had a tight time frame to complete this shotcreting project as a concrete pour could not be used because it would not seal and be able to be cast in the manner required by the engineers, creating structural deficiencies. PYBAR had to work within the minimal time due to water build-up to successfully complete this project. “The team from PYBAR did a very difficult job in poor conditions and completed it well,” said Pat Ball, the underground manager at Fossey Mine. “Their competence, attitude and work ethic are a credit to PYBAR.” For more information, visit www.pybar.com.au n

SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.
