Welcome Aboard W

elcome aboard your flight today with Skippers. With the summer weather upon us, hopefully we can enjoy some sunshine and clear weather which will enable your trip to be as comfortable as possible. Perth Airport is implementing a new slot control system from the 1st February 2013 which they assure us will restrict the number of delays airlines are experiencing at the present time, particularly in the peak periods. Lets all hope that it works better than the present system but it still doesn’t get away from the fact that with the huge passenger volume increase through Perth, the third runway is an essential part of infrastructure going forward which is now being acknowledged by Perth Airport and politicians alike. You will notice an article from our crew supporting Movember (on page 43). The coastal network changes have now been approved and this will provide extra services to Carnarvon and direct services to Shark Bay/Monkey Mia. Burswood Car Rentals have a guaranteed pick-up and delivery service which can be ordered online or direct with them and in most cases is cheaper than the better known brands. Skippers’ package holidays through Discover West Holidays has been well received incorporating all our destinations. Motive Travel also have a number of sporting tours such as Melbourne Cup as well as other sporting events. Skippers Road Transport arm continues to be very active in the resource industry and a couple of loads are shown on this page. Skippers Kimberley Air Service routes servicing Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek are being well patronized by the local community and provide a fast and comfortable journey to the remote locations. We congratulate Millennium Minerals on their success and although at present flying to Newman, we expect in the near future they will be flying into their own strip at Nullagine. Skippers Aviation continues to carr out the Kambalda Regular Public Transport services on behalf of Cobham (bookings and departures are from Cobham's terminal). We once again remind you that we have wireless internet that is available to our passengers in the Perth terminal, which is free of charge. Please enquire upon checking in. Skippers dedicated crews are all simulated trained although not mandated by CASA. Skippers has elected to train all crew in this manner in the interest of safety. It is encouraging that there is a lot of activity over our network by emerging resource companies new and old riding on the back of the current resource boom. Once again enjoy your journey with us today. We feel privileged to provide this service and look forward to you flying with us again soon.

THE WILDLIFE

warrior queen BY BETTINA MANIATIS

E

ver since the death of her husband, Steve Irwin back in 2006, Terri Irwin has been ferociously fighting to keep his legacy alive and with her latest show, Steve Irwin’s Wildlife Warriors, she’s roaring louder than ever.

are continuing Steve’s dream of protecting wildlife and wild places. Steve is still a really important part of the Zoo and the world is still so passionate about his legacy. Can you tell us why you think Steve is still so popular today? I think Steve Irwin’s Wildlife Warriors is such an exciting show because it also includes archived footage of Steve. People around the world still enjoy watching Steve’s passion for wildlife and his unbridle enthusiasm is contagious.

Congratulations on the show! Steve Irwin’s Wildlife Warriors gives viewers a chance to see the behind the scenes work we do at Australia Zoo, at our wildlife hospital and with our rescue unit. There are so many animals at the zoo– do you have a bond and love for each and every one? Each and every animal at Australia Zoo is unique and special. My favourite would have to be the crocodiles because they are so misunderstood. They are actually loving mothers, passionate lovers and have their own individual personalities. Our wildlife make sure that every day is different for us here at Australia Zoo.

"People around the world still

enjoy watching Steve’s passion for wildlife and his unbridled

enthusiasm is contagious.”

- Terri Irwin

Can you tell us about any animals at the zoo that have a particularly interesting story? One of the most interesting animals we experience on the show would have to be an echidna baby. Its name is Muggle and it’s a puggle! Very few people in the world would know what it was just by looking at it. And obviously, as with all your ventures, the show strongly communicates the message of wildlife conservation… We are the most hands on zoo in the world

and it is one of the great elements of the show – it takes you to our conservation projects throughout Australia which is another reason I am so excited about SIWW. Steve Irwin Day was recently – can you tell us how that went? Steve Irwin Day was a huge success celebrating Steve’s life with family, fun and wildlife. We raised much needed funds for Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors and we

Both Robert and Bindi seem so genuinely passionate about following in their father’s footsteps and communicating his message – what do you see for their future? Both Bindi and Robert are passionate about continuing their Dad’s legacy and are loving filming for Steve Irwin’s Wildlife Warriors . Bindi has a real desire to showcase wildlife in need at our hospital and Robert just enjoys wrangling everything just like his dad! And your own future? Where do you see yourself in ten years? Ten years from now, we would love to be achieving more positive results for wildlife worldwide. This includes ending the consumptive use of wildlife and all wildlife trafficking. It’s only if we stand shoulder to shoulder as Wildlife Warriors that we will be able to achieve this. n

Pilbara stories

P

ilbara Stories turns a lens on the Pilbara’s people and community, through a photographic and social documentary project that aims to capture stories of people living in Port Hedland and surrounds. Pilbara Stories features 100 portraits that celebrate the diverse heritage, individuality and experiences of everyday life in the Pilbara with a focus on Port Hedland and surrounds. Over two years, FORM has supported leading international photographers Martin Parr, Bharat Sikka, Ketaki Sheth and Annet van der Voort to develop a multi-perspective and globalising encounter with the region. “Before I arrived into Port Hedland,

I was given many warnings,” said UK photographer Martin Parr. “It’s dirty; it’s ugly and all covered in red dust - the reputation of Port Hedland is not good, to say the least so you can imagine my very pleasant surprise when I arrived and found it to be one of the most interesting, engaging and surreal towns I had ever experienced.” Landscape has been a persistent theme in the history of representing the Pilbara. In Australia’s cities we often see the Northwest as a wilderness; distant and remote. Through artistic and creative engagement, Pilbara Stories creates a special intimacy between a place like Port Hedland and the rest of the country, cutting across the divide between the regions and metropolis.

FORM undertook interviews and recordings with the subjects that were photographed, lending another dimension; one that tells the personal stories of people living and working in this region. Pilbara Stories unveils a new way of seeing and knowing the Pilbara, through its people, their hopes, dreams and desires as they make Port Hedland their home. More than 52 different nationalities live in Port Hedland and the region owes its unique identity to its rich heritage and culture. For many residents, this cosmopolitanism is Port Hedland’s appeal; a place they feel is built on strong foundations of community, and friendship, where diversity is embraced.

“Port Hedland means to me, home, mo re than home , everything. T his country h as given us so m uch. The free dom we were expe cting was sm all, but now, the country has g iven us much mor e than what w e were expectin g.”

- Erzabest Kat ai, Hungarian Refugee and Port Hedland resident for 24 years.

The photographs concentrate on the simplicities of the human interactions: the nourishment of family, the camaraderie of friends, and the initial suspicion of strangers that can be turned into trust. Most of the portraits are shot in homes or places of work, so the familiarity with place enhances a feeling of comfort and an atmosphere of honesty. The photographers record the nuances of body language and the pride conveyed in daily labour and peaceful coexistence. In this way, the project is about globalization, but one that has nothing to do with telecommunications and the circulation of capital and everything to do with the commonality of human experience. The photographs, like stanzas of a poem are fragments that form a visual narrative, shaping a new awareness of place, lending a sense of heritage and a deeper understanding of the people who live in the Pilbara. Each photograph represents a piece of the story constantly unfolding in the Pilbara, as well as an insight into the region’s past. Pilbara Stories will open at the FORM Gallery, Perth and Courthouse Gallery, Port Hedland in February 2013. For more details, visit www.discoverthepilbara.com or www.thepilbaraproject.com n

shock, amaze and entertain crowds with their incredible talent. Highlights include a visually stunning performance by French company Bilbobasso, combining Argentinian tango, music and the art of fire in the street. No one will be safe from the mischief of two precocious babies who will be getting around the streets in 3-meter high prams, involving passers-by and making them accomplices of their antics of young and immature business. acrobalance and of course, comedy. This is circus, but like you have never seen it before. This barely scratches the surface as to what you can expect in Fremantle this Easter. Performances from street theatre company Primitive (Belgium), a one-man, word-free comedy from the USA and Fadunito from Spain will be accompanied by a dozen or so other artists to inspire and delight anyone on the streets. Most performances over the weekend are ‘free’, with the rule of the game being to pay what you believe the entertainment was worth as the artists pass their hat through the crowd. Each member of the audience is the critic who will decide how much is earnt. These performers work hard to delight and inspire generosity. The Fremantle Street Arts Festival is a major event in the port city and a much-loved part of the Fremantle culture. Fremantle is a unique city, with a vibrant and exciting atmosphere within a working port. There are plenty of restaurants, markets, stylish bars and cafes, art galleries and shops to visit in between the Street Arts performances. Roll-up, roll-up there is something for all ages and tastes at the Fremantle Street Arts Festival, so make sure that you don’t miss out on the unique opportunity to experience world class performances and artists in a unique location. n

The Pearl of the north Broome

www.fusionjewellers.com.au Quit smoking perth.pdf 1 11/16/2012 3:25:51 PM

A

ffectionately known as the ‘pearl of the north’, this charming seaside resort town began life as a pearling port in the late 1880s. Luring people from far and wide with the promise of great fortune, a melting pot of Koepanger, Malay, Chinese, Japanese, European and Aboriginal cultures has given the town a captivatingly friendly and flamboyant character. Still proudly producing the world’s finest pearls, you can wander through Chinatown’s dazzling pearl showrooms, retail outlets and sidewalk cafes – once home to pearl sheds, billiard saloons, entertainment houses, opium dens and brothels. Today, 22 kilometres of pristine sand brings the world to Broome’s Cable Beach. Lapped by the warm azure waters of the Indian Ocean, it’s renowned as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches with one of the best ocean sunset views on the planet. Take it all in astride a camel train, on the deck of a pearl lugger, or just swim, fish and relax in the sun. The town of Broome sits on the edge of Roebuck Bay, one of a handful of locations along the Kimberley and Pilbara coastline where you can witness the magical illusion of the Staircase to the Moon. Nowhere else on earth does Mother Nature perform such an astonishing trick of the light. The bay is also incredibly bio-diverse – a haven for thousands of migratory birds that flock here to feast on the food-rich tidal flats, and one of the richest areas of verified dinosaur footprints on the planet. Little wonder Broome is such a popular holiday destination with a bounty of experiences to enjoy:relaxing beachside breaks; enlightening cultural and historical encounters; family getaways; outback adventures and more.

TRAVEL BUG BITES

The many health benefits of travel

I

t’s around this time of year that most give some extra thought to their health. From kick starting that long overdue healthy eating plan to perhaps purchasing some new runners, getting into the healthy lifestyle is usually on the top of people’s priority lists at the start of the year. So, I can imagine it will come as welcome news, and perhaps surprising to some, that travel offers some incredible health benefits. So many of us put off travelling, either for financial reasons or because we have too much on at work and many just simply can’t be bothered with the planning of it all. But what if you knew that taking that trip would actually invigorate your mind and body to the point that both the physical and mental advantages become physically distinguishable? You’ve seen if for yourself. When your college comes back from their holiday looking refreshed - even ‘glowing’ - and mentally sharper than ever.

BY BETTINA MANIATIS

Improve Your Mood

So I’ve compiled a list of the top four health benefits that come from travelling.

Reduce Stress Coming in at the top of the list, and probably the most obvious health benefit to taking a holiday, is stress reduction. The chance to simply get away from it all and clear your mind is the main reason people choose to take a holiday in the first place. Stress is proven to contribute to many health issues from a stroke to heart disease so getting your mind and body out of the stress zone is the best thing for you.

Boost the Brain There’s a lot of planning that goes into a holiday. Itinerary arranging, studying the geography of the region you’re visiting, mapping our your day, remembering your essentials – it all takes your mind and it works hard to make sure everything’s taken care of.

Feelings of dreading the work week or worrying over your to do list are replaced with excitement toward your holiday and happiness to be spending time with loved ones, or to simply be getting out of the daily grind.

Becoming More Active Whilst it’s true that many of us overindulge when it comes to eating on holidays, you also become much more active. From getting to tourist attractions to bush hiking or even just walking around to discover the region, you tend to take many more steps and spend a lot of time outside when you’re on holiday. So, if you’ve been putting off that holiday because you just have too much going on, there’s no better time to put everything else aside, and take that well earned break. Your body, and mind, will thank you for it. n

SEND AIRLINE EXCESS BAGGAGE FEES PACKING

travelling. You may also be in line for an additional allowance if you are a member of the airline’s loyalty program.

Consider a full service airline When weighing up the various airline offerings, look beyond the headline prices.

Make the most of your hand luggage allowance Where hand luggage is included in the fare, make the most of your allowance to minimise your suitcase’s weight – and the charges that may apply to it.

t a time when travellers are being asked to weigh-up a range of extra charges when evaluating airlines’ offerings, Flight Centre has scoured the fine print to compile ten tips for avoiding sky high luggage charges.

Extra luggage charges can be significant and can easily make a low cost carrier’s (LCCs) fare more expensive than a full service airline’s offering. Some LCCs overseas now charge customers for carry-on luggage. Pay in advance, not at the airport Where checked luggage charges apply, fees are typically lower if you pay when you book your flight. If you take the traditional approach of checking luggage and paying applicable fees at the airport, you will typically face heftier charges. Plan ahead Given that you’re required to guess the weight of your suitcase (and pay for it) well in advance of packing, it pays to have an idea of what you will be taking with you to ensure you buy the appropriate luggage allowance. It doesn’t pay to be overweight Once you’ve paid for your luggage allowance, stick to it as weight restrictions are enforced. Charges typically apply for every extra kilogram. Status can be important Luggage allowances may vary, depending on the type of fare you buy or the route you’re

22

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

Again, don’t assume hand luggage is free.

Jetstar passengers who are travelling on Saver Fares are allowed two carry-on items with a combined weight of 10kg. On most Qantas domestic flights, passengers can carry-on two items, each weighing up to 7kg. Wear bulky clothing If you’re travelling with bulky coats or jackets and the climate allows, consider wearing them. This not only lowers suitcase weight, it may also help you avoid another potential fee – the in-flight blanket charge. Take note of cancellation policies Don’t assume that if you cancel your trip your pre-paid luggage fees will be refunded. According to Tiger’s website in Australia, passengers who pay luggage fees “at the time of booking or up to 72 hours before departure are not entitled to a refund of the fee in the event that they do not travel or do not carry the upsized luggage allowance of checked-in luggage.” Read the luggage fine print Policies change frequently and vary widely from airline to airline. Double-check the rules before you travel to avoid any luggage-related headaches at the airport. n

New Year, New Divorce THE TOP 8 QUESTIONS FROM YOUR LAWYER

S

adly for some families, New Year resolutions involve dealing with the ongoing issue of whether the family should stay together, or take steps towards a divorce. This issue, we hear from Perth based family lawyer, Catherine Leach. It may seem strange for a lawyer to give advice that would help a meeting go more swiftly, but that could explain why I don’t drive a Mercedes! If you’re preparing for your first meeting with your Family Lawyer, then be prepared to answer the eight questions below, and get the most out of your meeting (and in a shorter amount of time!). Although everyone’s circumstances are different, in my experience there are things that I always need to know before I can give clear Family Law advice. I need to know the full picture, even if your separation or divorce is amicable. In order to make the best use of your time with your lawyer it is useful to know the types of questions that you are likely to be asked so that you can prepare your answers to these. I have found that when people don’t know the answer to some of these questions, I have been unable to give detailed advice and often people need to come back for another appointment once they have all the information. If your appointment relates to property settlement issues, these are some of the more commonly asked questions I ask: • When you started living together in a de facto relationship and/or your date of marriage, your date of separation and your date of divorce. • Names and dates of birth of any children. • What assets each of you owned at the beginning of your relationship (either the date you started living together or if you didn’t live together, the date of marriage) and any debts that each of you had at that time. • If any substantial inheritances or gifts were received either prior to, during or after your relationship, how much was received and what happened to it. • A list of what you and your ex-partner now own, including superannuation and the value of those items and a list of all debts in your name or in your ex-partner’s name and the amounts owing. • What each of you earns (usually gross taxable income). • Details of any proposals made to you by your ex-partner. • Whether you have received any letters from your ex-partner’s lawyers and if you have brought the letters with you.

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

I really like to be able to check documents because sometimes people are not sure of what the real legal picture is. For example: • If there is a family trust, try and locate the Trust Deed and take it with you as you will be asked who the appointer and the trustee is, • If there are companies, find out the name(s) of the company and if possible who the shareholders and directors are. • If there is self managed super fund, try and locate and bring with you the Trust Deed as you will be asked who the trustees and members are. Some other things I suggest you do to maximise your appointment with your lawyer are: • Ask two or three local real estate agents to provide you with a written market appraisal for any properties and take them with you. • Contact your bank and obtain an up to date balance of all accounts that you have access to or print out current statements from your internet banking. • Contact your superannuation fund and ask them to send you a current statement. • If there are personal loans or loans for motor vehicles, contact the finance company or bank and ask them to provide you with a payout. • If you do not have copies of your tax returns, contact your accountant or contact the Australian Tax Office and ask them to send you copies of your last three returns. If you have clear answers to these questions and you have collected as many documents as possible, your first appointment can be very effective. Often I find that a lot of your appointment time can be taken up by extracting the information from people and the better organised and prepared you are, the more accurate the advice can be and the shorter your appointment. I appreciate that sometimes you just don’t have access to that information, so if you don’t, it is really important to ask your lawyer what steps they can take to obtain answers to our eight commonly asked questions. If your New Year resolution involves taking the first very difficult steps towards a divorce, I wish you all the very best. I hope it goes as smoothly as possible for you. n To arrange an obligation free consultation today, phone Catherine on (08) 9387 4433.

Providing timely mediation so you can get back to doing what you do best

New Parenting Plan? S

chool holidays are the time when parenting plans can be really tried and tested. If you are tired of having to fight about time with the children and find it difficult to talk with your ex, you don’t have to head to court - consider getting a family mediator or a parenting plan kit to facilitate your negotiation. Take Sarah and Mark for example: Mark was supposed to have the kids for the holidays this year but Sarah wanted to go overseas. Sarah insisted and took the kids and Mark negotiated to have more time with them when she returned. When Sarah came back, she did not hold up her end of the bargain. In response, Mark stopped being flexible. Sarah then refused to give Mark back his ‘lost days.’ They reached a stalemate. Through family mediation, Mark and Sarah negotiated a parenting plan that was in the best interests of their children and found ways to improve their communication. Not all parents need to attend a formal mediation process in order to prepare their parenting plan. Some people just need a little guidance as to the key things to consider when drawing up a parenting plan. The Aresolution parenting plan kit can help guide you through this process and for a limited time it is free. You can also use your free parenting plan kit in conjunction with support from the mediator for an additional fee. Douja Elhajj is the principal mediator at Aresolution and can help people reach an agreement without going to court. Save thousands of dollars in court fees and prevent the emotional stress that the litigation process may create. DIY Floor Tiling

YOUR PLACE

Save money and tile your own floors? www.homedesigndirectory.com.au

PLANNING

twist and wiggle the tile to ensure a solid and accurate fit.

Planning is essential if you want a beautiful finish. Firstly do some homework and visit a few tile supply shops. They will be able to supply you with everything you need for your job, and they will also be able to refer professionals to you if required.

Only lay two or three tiles at a time. Follow the lines you have drawn to ensure the tiles are in straight lines. If adhesive oozes up between the tiles when you press them into position you are using too much adhesive. Adjust the amount of adhesive accordingly. As you add each tile, use tile-spacers. These are removed just before you place the grout between the tiles.

PREPARATION Once you have chosen your tiles, it is time to prepare the surface of your floor structure. If you are renovating a bathroom you will need to ensure the floor structure is sound before you start. Levelling. It is imperative at this time to work out the depth of the entire tile-bed so that there is very little 'step-up' onto your tiled area. Remember most standard houses are constructed with the same structural floor level throughout the entire house, allowing for no step-down to accommodate the tile bed. You will need to calculate the total thickness of your tiled floor at the wet-area door, and to include: tile thickness (e.g. 7mm) plus tile glue (1mm) plus cement bed (20mm) plus fibre cement linings (12mm). If, for example, you calculate that you have a total of 40mm in floor thickness, you need to be aware that it can be a tripping hazard and you will need to cut the thickness down to at least 25mm. You can accomplish this by doing research on different products or by reducing the level of the floor structure. Engage a professional for floor level reduction. When the level of the floor has been finalised, lining can begin. Lining. New fibre cement sheeting will need to be applied to all walls. Non-concrete flooring will required compressed fibre cement sheeting to comply with Australian standards for loads. Waterproofing. All internal areas that will see water use are called wet areas and will require waterproofing. The standard for waterproofing your tiled-area will vary depending on room use. Bathrooms, for example, will need to have the highest level of waterproofing (refer to the latest Australian Standard on water proofing). There are water-proof professionals and it is highly recommended you don't do this yourself. Don't forget that tile expansion joints, shower set-downs, door thresholds and bath hobs will need to be factored into the bathroom before the waterproofing membrane is applied. Once the waterproofing is totally dry and has been certified by a professional you are ready to start creating a base for your tile bed.

To cut tiles accurately and cleanly, you will require a tile-cutter. These can be purchased from a hardware store such as Bunnings or Mitre10 for anywhere between $20 and $100.

CURING

Create a base & fall in your floor. If you are tiling a bathroom floor it will need a fall to meet Australian Standards and to avoid internal flooding. You will need to check with your council for current complying floor falls - but a 10mm fall over 1000mm can be used as a guide. Ensure the cement is thick enough in all areas to avoid cracking (i.e. a minimum of 20mm).

TILE INSTALLATION Now the fun bit - you are ready to start tiling. Dry-lay (tile without glue) one row of your tiles horizontally from the set-out point and the other adjacent to this row. This will allow you to see how the tiles are going to fit within the tiled space and which tiles need to be cut. Make sure you allow for 3mm grout (use a tape measure & tile spacers to be precise). You can play with the joint spacing and allow 2 to 5 millimetres of grout between tiles to avoid skinny cut tiles, but keep the joints uniform. If it looks like you will need to cut a tile, make sure you move this tile to a less noticeable place like behind a door.

TROWELLING THE TILE ADHESIVE Make sure you have chosen the recommended adhesive. Your tile supplier or manufacturer should advise on you which adhesive to use. One side of your trowel will have markings or notches. Use this end to apply the adhesive to the floor. This will give it a striped or grooved appearance. Place the first tile on the adhesive and wiggle it back and forth to ensure it is in position. Then lift the tile and examine its bottom. If the adhesive is not evenly spread over the tile adjust the thickness of your adhesive making sure there is enough, then replace this first tile in its correct position. Do not forget to

Tiles must be allowed to cure for several hours, usually overnight. The manufacturer of the adhesive will have a recommended cure time. Do not walk on the tiles during the curing process, it will displace them. It is important to start tiling away from the door - and then working your way back to the door. GROUTING Prepare the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions. Grout has a thick, not a thin, consistency. There are many colours of grout and you can even change the colour to suit your tiles. Use a trowel known as a rubber float and work the grout into the spaces between the tiles on an angle. This enables the grout to be pushed deeply into all spaces. CLEAN-UP Do not delay - use a damp sponge and wipe away all the grout on the tiles. Do not remove the grout between the tiles. Constantly wash the sponge. Have a bucket of clean water at hand and regularly rinse the sponge, and just as you had to cure the adhesive when laying the tiles, so too you must cure the grout. The manufacturer of the grout mixture should have instructions on how to cure their product. It might mean carefully spraying the grout with a spray of water each day for a few days. Again avoid walking on the tiles wherever possible. The final step in the curing of the grout is to apply a sealant. This will prevent water seeping in under the tiles via the grout. FINISHING All tiled floor areas should be sealed before use and there are different sealants for different purposes. General sealants minimise water penetration, but there are others that offer extra floor grip and total water penetration (epoxy coating). n

Geologists in the Firing

and Hiring Line

T

he 2012/13 financial year has been a rocky one for the Australian minerals industry marked by significant job losses, exploration and expansion shortfall and massive cost cutting across all areas of mining. The current industry contraction has been compared to the 2008 period of economic slowdown preceding the GFC, but Digirock Pty Ltd stresses that it is important to maintain perspective. “The role of a geologist, particularly in exploration, has traditionally been highly susceptible to the cyclical nature of the industry but as certain as it goes down, it will come back up again,” said Digirock Recruitment Geologist Melissa Higgins. In an increasingly economically conservative market, it is important to acknowledge the natural flow of geological attrition and not to panic in the face of redundancies and costcutting across the sector. Digirock is a leading geological services provider and, as such, keeps a close eye on industry activity, including the current slowdown. “We’ve seen strong contraction in exploration spending with deferral of drilling programs since July, however our outlook for 2013 is positive,” Melissa said. “We believe we are close to the bottom of a natural low in the cycle and we’re now preparing for an upswing in activity and spending in the New Year.” Digirock’s Quality Recruitment Services has launched a number of initiatives encouraging geological recruitment. These include a Vacation Student Register introducing undergraduates to exploration companies and geoscience recruitment and placement services linking geoscience jobseekers to employers seeking quality staff well matched to their permanent and contract roles. For further services, information or opportunities across exploration and production, contact Digirock on (08) 9472 6441 or visit www.digirock.com.au n

AN INTRODUCTION TO LOCAL BUSINESS BUZZ H

ere at Inflight Magazine, we believe our advertisers truly do have some excellent products and services, and while we may not have the space to cover each and every one of our advertiser’s stories, we do like to support them as much as we can. And thus Local Business Buzz was born. This section is aimed to cover our advertiser’s products or services in a little more detail than just their advert, and hopefully provide you with an entertaining and informative read at the same time. Enjoy!

IMPLEMENTATION APPROACHES T

he principles of RCM (Reliability-Centered Maintenance) are most effective when they are implemented not as a project to be completed but as a program to be lived as part of the day-to-day maintenance of the organisation. This requires a detailed focus on training, knowledge transfer, and application of current knowledge to establish accurate maintenance strategies. However, given the current price collapse and cost increases, it is often difficult to commit to this level of resources. For this reason they also help companies via a RCM Analyst approach where they are able to adapt anonymous failure mode libraries, developed using deep industry expertise, to the conditions and requirements of your operating plant. For any further information on how to apply RCM on your Longwall, Continuous Mining and CHPP assets please contact Reliability Success on the contact details below. Skippers Embraces Movember

uring November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in Australia and around the world. The aim is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health. Registering at www.movember.com, guys then start Movember 1st with a clean-shaven face and then for the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo growing efforts. Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health. This year at Skippers, a small however very committed gang of Mo Bros took on the challenge of Movember and we’re extremely proud of them for having done so. They raised awareness of men’s health issues, and raised few dollars along the way. Hopefully next year a few more Mo Bros can be recruited to make the Skippers’ contribution to Movember an even bigger and better success.

Men's Health. Why is Movember important? • • • • • •

The average life expectancy for men is five years less than women (77 years compared to 82); 1 in 8 men will experience depression and 1 in 5 men will experience an anxiety disorder during their lifetime; The male suicide rate is 4 times higher than that of women; 1 in 3 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime; 1 in 9 men in Australia will develop prostate cancer. Twenty thousand new cases will be diagnosed in Australia this year alone; Close to 3,300 Aussie men die of prostate cancer annually, higher than the number of women who die from breast cancer.

Big steps have been taken towards changing attitudes and habits relating to men’s health around the world but there is still much to be done to catch up with the women’s health movement. Via the moustache, Movember aims to fulfil its vision of having an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health, by continuing to spark conversation and spread awareness of men’s health each year. n

SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.

TALK BACK WITH

PETE MURRAY

OCCUPATION: Songwriter/musician and very average professional surfer (I got some free surf gear from Quicksilver once so I consider myself professional now!). FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION: I love any European destination. WHAT DO YOU NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT? My guitar. TRAVEL TIP: Make sure you get on the right plane or if you are driving make sure you are heading in the correct direction to where you want to go. Also remember your passport! MOST EMBARRASSING TRAVEL MOMENT: I was backpacking years ago and I was in Venice. I got my room key and I went up to the room which had about six bunk beds in it. On the room key was a number but I didn't pay much attention to that. I put my bags on the bottom of one of the bunk beds and went out for the night. When I came back, some other guy was sleeping in my bed and my bags had been moved to the floor. The night before in another hostel I caught some guy with his hands in my bag trying to steal something so I was still angry about that and I wasn't going to take any crap so I picked up the whole mattress and tossed the guy off and onto the floor telling him that this was my bed. The whole room was awake by now and everyone was looking. I was thinking that I had made my point and that no one would mess with me again. The guy on the floor was trying to tell me something but he couldn't talk because he was crapping himself so much and I was still insisting that this was my bed and saying don't ever touch my bags again. He eventually held up his room key and his hand was shaking. The room key had a number on it and it was the same number as the bed that I had just tossed him out of. I suddenly realised that the room key had the number of which bed we were to stay in, and mine wasn't that bed but the bed above him. I was so embarrassed that I picked him up apologizing and made his bed. I just wanted to leave the place right there and then. The next morning, I made him breakfast! I haven't been back to Venice again (maybe this is the reason!!) - definitely not one of my finer moments. WHAT’S COMING UP FOR YOU NEXT? I'm going to be doing an Australian Tour in early 2013 as well as the Riverboats Music Festival (15th to 17th February) then off to North American for a tour in May 2013. n
