By the 1870s the region had become a booming gold mining centre boasting some of the country’s most productive gold fields, which rewarded prospectors with ‘Holtermann’s Nugget’ the biggest specimen of reef gold at the time weighing 285 kg being discovered in Hill End, which remains one of the most well preserved goldmining towns in Australia. CountryLink’s 3 day/2 night Golden West package allows you to trace the tracks of prospectors in a comfortable guided experience.

The first day sees the train arriving at The Rock where you will be transferred to Hanericka Farmstay. The entire afternoon is yours to enjoy at your leisure. Take in the sights of the farm, watch the milking process or walk up an appetite before you are treated to an Australian country dinner.

Departing every Monday our train takes you to Orange where you stay in Camelia Cottage B&B, a stately federation home reflecting the elegance of the era. The second day will set you off on a scenic 4wd tour to Hill End, one of the most historic townships in the area. Pan for some gold and learn about the heritage at the Information Centre and Museum. A BBQ lunch will be provided on the banks of the Turon River before returning to Orange via the Bridle Track, a picturesque, rugged road. The final day includes breakfast and lunch, whilst taking you to Mt Canobolas for some fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. Sample the fresh local produce in the afternoon and visit some of Australia’s finest, award-winning wineries, before you head back to Sydney. The Golden West package departs every Monday at 7:10am. Fishing Fanatics

XPt r a v e l l e r V o l 7 I s s u e 2 _ 10

WE CHAT TO NICK DUIGAN AND ANDREW HART OF AUSTRALIA’S FAVOURITE FISHING SHOW, HOOK, LINK & SINKER.

P

opular fishing series Hook, Line & Sinker is now in production with its eighth season after signing a deal with 7Mate for free-to-air broadcast of 20 new episodes which began in mid May. Scheduled for Saturdays at 5:00pm, the 7Mate agreement includes 20 brand new, premier episodes as well as some of the boys’ best episodes from their previous seven seasons.

confidence, once you actually see a particular technique work for yourself, the desire to give up and try something else isn’t nearly as strong. What are some of your very favourite fishing spots throughout the country? Nick: It’s hard to rate destinations really because for us they kind of live or die on the vagaries of weather and fishing but I do have a few absolute favourites. The township of 1770 is just about the picture perfect pinup of what a Queensland coastal village should be, gentle pace of life, not too many people and sensational access to some beautiful bits of the Great Barrier Reef.

Shot entirely in stunning High Definition, hosts Nick Duigan and Andrew Hart take viewers across Australia to find the best fishing spots, provide fishing and cooking tips, and always have a laugh with their wacky sense of humour. We understand you guys are now in production on the eighth series of Hook, Line & Sinker – what can we expect? Nick: It’s a bit of a break out year for Hook, Line & Sinker. It’s the first time we’ll air nationally on free to air TV (Saturday arvo 7Mate) so we’re racking up the miles all over the country putting together 20 new shows. We really try to strike a balance between some truly spectacular fishing and also the notion that fishing with your friends is meant to be good fun. So from a fishing perspective, we’ve got some sensational game fishing for Blue Marlin off Tweed Heads, some angry, boat eating Mako sharks in Bass Strait, Barra in the Kimberley and plenty of other good stuff as well. On the fun side, we’re both trying to restore a couple of sub $1,000 dollar boats into tournament rockets, we’ll be fishing the croc infested waters of the NT with the world’s most sophisticated radio controlled vessel, the Cindy Maree II and joining the grey nomads for a pilgrimage up the WA coast. So all in all, another day at the office really.

For anyone that loves the idea but has never fished before – where is a good starting point? Andrew: Local knowledge is key. If we fish somewhere we’ve never been, it’s important to get somebody who knows what’s going on. That’s why if you’ve never fished before the best thing to do is to go with a charter or a guide. You’ll learn more in one day from someone who knows what they are doing than in a year of trying to do it yourself! Nick: Yes, find a friend! Do whatever it takes to get in with someone who knows what they’re doing. These days it’s not that hard. In most places, there are web forums dedicated to fishing in the local area and these can be gold mines of information and more importantly, sources of potential fishing buddies. Fishing is all about

On the New South Wales south coast is a little gem of a spot called Bermagui. It’s not the most fashionable town on the Sapphire Coast but as a place to catch a fish, there are very few better. At various times of the year, Marlin, Yellowfin and Bluefin Tuna along with Kingfish, Snapper and just about anything you can think of can be caught at Bermi. And for truly ‘blow you away beauty’ and epic scale there’s no going past the Kimberley region of WA. We’re fresh back from a trip to the Kimberley Coastal Camp in the Admiralty Gulf and sort of can’t stop raving about the place. The fishing is as good as you would expect with Barra, Mangrove Jacks and Mud Crabs in the creeks and Queenfish, Giant Trevally, Mackerel and Jewfish in the blue water. Throw in some of the oldest, most culturally significant rock art anywhere on earth and a 5 star camping experience and the Kimberley takes some beating.

For all those keen fishermen out there, can you give us some vital tips on how to snag a great dinner? Nick: It’s probably a bit disingenuous for us to be handing out tips given our track record but here goes! There is a great saying I heard from an old bloke who was bream fishing on the side of a river. He was perched on an old fold-up chair, using an ancient rod and reel and next to him in the ubiquitous white bucket was a brace of nice fish. Andrew and I on the other hand were in a flash new boat with enough lures, rods and reels to stock a tackle shop but hadn’t turned a scale all day. We stopped and asked the bloke the secret of his success and his succinct reply was: “If you want to go fishing, use a lure but if you want to catch fish, use bait.” It’s hard to argue. Andrew: My biggest tip is to keep it simple and fish as light as you possibly can. It does not matter what you are fishing for, but if you use the lightest line, the smallest sinker and smallest hook you can, you will get more bites!

Special mention goes to the Oxley Lookout too – a wonderful spot to take in the panoramic views of the region and of course there’s the option to bushwalk about these parts as well. So go on, experience the tantalising offerings of Tamworth for yourself. Visit www.visittamworth.com for more information.

H

ome to the largest country music festival in the southern hemisphere, Tamworth is considered by many to be the Australian country music capital. Don’t let this fool you though; country music isn’t all this region has to offer! Covering 184 sq km, Tamworth has something for everyone from nature lovers and history buffs to passionate foodies and those wanting to relax and unwind - so if you’re heading here on the train today, you’re in for a treat. Approximately 50,000 people call the city home with its thriving retail industry and easy access to the freshest of produce supplied by local growers as well as some great museums and galleries. For those wanting to see a little piece of history, the city also has many buildings dating back to the 1860s and 70s. For the outdoor enthusiasts, enjoy Tamworth’s nature parks, bird sanctuaries and national parks – there’s certainly plenty to see. If you want to catch a glimpse of kangaroos, wallabies, possums, emus and more, why not pop in to the marsupial park – always a popular choice with the kids.

The National Photographic Portrait Prize is an annual event intending to promote the very best in contemporary photographic portraiture by both professional and aspiring Australian photographers. 2012 will be the 5th year that the National Portrait Gallery has held this competition.

he Bathurst Spring Spectacular will be held this year on 27th and 28th October with 11 gardens open to the public from 9.30am to 5pm each day. What’s more, there are two new gardens in the event this year being “Mt.Tamar” owned by Judy and Chris Bayliss and a White Rock garden owned by Ken and Dawn Peterson.

Bathurst Spring Spectacular is organised by Bathurst Gardeners’ Club and over the years has raised more than $150,000 for local charities. This year there will be at least five buses coming from all over NSW and of course many people will be coming by train also. Additionally, there’s the lovely garden of Sarah and Andrew Ryan at Yetholme. Sarah has developed a beautiful garden over several years with wonderful rhododendrons and has established a nursery which is open to the public at certain times. Two gardens at Kirkonnell owned by the Bland Families will be open this year after a break for a couple of years. These are two large country gardens with large trees and many special features. For the history buffs, there are many buildings of historic value in Bathurst including the Court House and the Goal.

And Miss Traill’s historic house and garden will also be open with tours of the house available. Visitors will also be able to purchase refreshments at most gardens – these provided by local charities. Tickets are $15 each and can be used over both days. They will be sold at all gardens plus the Visitor Information Centre in Bathurst. More information can be found at www.bathurstspringspectacular.com.

It’s that time of year again... The Mildura Country Music Festival

F

eaturing a seemingly endless cast of highly talented professional country music artists who aren't signed to major record label deals, the Mildura Country Music Festival is always eagerly awaited by Australian country music fans. The festival kicks off from September 28 to October 7 and the fact that it has Australia’s biggest showcase of independent entertainers gives Mildura a very different complexion. In 2012, more than 100 individual artists and groups will entertain over the 10-day period, and the roster comprises many award winners. The venues, 28 in all, spread from the City Mall providing all-day entertainment at central city venues in Mildura to outlying locations like Wentworth, Merbein, Red Cliffs, Coomealla, Irymple, Buronga and Gol Gol. Every taste is catered for with Line Dancing, Country Rock, Bluegrass, Bush Ballads and daily Walk Ups for those not on the program.

COUNTRY MUSIC

26

MIL UR A D The jewel in the crown in past years has been the live concert and radio presentation of the Southern Stars - The Australian Independent Country Music Awards, presented by Neighbourhood Cable that recognise the achievements of the independent recording artists during the past year, and this year's entries are sure to again endorse the status of the event. Many previous finalist and winners like Felicity Urquhart, Darren Coggan, Travis Sinclair, Drew McAlister and Carter & Carter have also won Golden Guitars, with some notable successes like Brendon Walmsley, James Blundell and Dianna Corcoran being multiple Golden Guitars winners. The culture of Mildura has built up on a real family factor, and that applies equally to the artists as well as the fans. There is a noticeable lack of urgency and panic during the festival, because if you miss a planned event on one day, you can usually catch up later in the week. The excitement factor is still there, but there's an element of control built in - and that's why the enjoyment factor is just as evident on day ten as the start. And the reason the artists enjoy it so much is that it's ten days of music, friendship and fun. Mildura is really a level playing field - no star billing, no support act tag, and certainly no room for egos. Further information and programs can be obtained by visiting www.milduracountrymusic.com.au or call 1800 039 043.

Weekend in Melbourne S

o, you’re in Melbourne for the weekend and it seems like hardly any time at all! If you’ve only got a couple of days, make the most of every moment and explore all Melbourne has to offer.

Southbank. All photos courtesy of Tourism Victoria.

Melbourne Aquarium

MORNING Start your day in the city with a cup of the finest- there are many cafes to choose from. If you’re in the city, try Journal Café in City Library, nearby Degraves Place or Coffee HQ, 367 Collins Street, then wander to Collins Kitchen at the Grand Hyatt for a breakfast with a twist. Watch chefs in the newly redeveloped hotel cook to order from the various food stations which includes Asian, continental and traditional fare. After satisfying the stomach, make your way to the Melbourne Aquarium for its new Antarctica exhibition which includes the cheeky Gentoo and majestic King penguins.

and discover a world of new tastes and flavours and tantalise your tastebuds as you enjoy sampling some of the finest and freshest produce in Melbourne.

NOON From the aquarium, head across to Southbank on the pedestrian footbridge spanning the Yarra River. Explore the promenade and its huge range of cafes and restaurants which run all the way from the Southgate complex to Crown Casino – many have outdoor terraces and balconies perfect for people watching on a sunny day. A couple of new openers include GAS and Sho Noodle Bar.

EVENING Head back into the heart of the city to Chinatown in Little Bourke Street. Try the cheap and cheerful Shanghai Dumpling Restaurant in Tattersalls Lane. There are loads of mid-priced options, but a good Chinese option that embraces Szechuan and Shanghai style Chinese food is Spicy Fish. If you are keen to indulge, try the upmarket Flower Drum in Market Lane which prides itself on exquisite Cantonese fare.

AFTERNOON Wander through the famous Queen Victoria Market, located on Elizabeth Street. This much loved local landmark is Australia’s oldest market and the largest open-air market in the southern hemisphere. Sprawled over 7 hectares, the market features everything from souvenir stuffed koalas, fresh crayfish, leather jackets to pickled onions. Take a Foodies Dream Tour

NIGHTLIFE Follow the stream of punters carrying picnic hampers, rugs and cushions into the Royal Botanic Gardens to catch a flick in the open air at the Moonlight Cinema or you might like to pull up a deck chair on the rooftop of Curtin House in Swanston Street. This unique cinema, with excellent views of the city skyline, seats about 200 and the cinema’s second season program boasts a diverse

selection of films. After the movie, why not check out of the city’s many night spots? From elegant cocktail sipping venues such as Silk Road in Collins Street to Irish pubs dotted around the CBD and techno dance haunts in hidden laneways, there is something to suit every taste.

Day two MORNING Explore Melbourne’s new shops and shopping precincts, including GPO, Melbourne Central, Flinders Lane, Little Collins Street and QV on a self-guided journey. If you prefer an insider’s guide, book a Hidden Secrets Tour where you will be guided through historical laneways, alleys and arcades to visit distinctive and unique stores. These three-hour walking tours finish with lunch. NOON For a chocolate hit like no other, visit one of the city’s establishments dedicated to the art of good cocoa. The Chokolait Hub in Hub Arcade, Little Collins Street is unforgettable,

National Gallery of Victoria

Bourke Street Mall

EVENING Pay a visit to one of Melbourne’s dining institutions. Try Grossi Florentino, in Bourke Street, for one of the city’s most beautiful dining rooms, quality service and excellent food. Nearby is another historic gem Pellegrini’s – or try the Supper Inn. Located at 15 Celestial Avenue it offers fabulous Cantonese fare until approx 2.30am. It’s not a fine dining experience, but full of atmosphere and fun. If you want the latest and greatest, check out Maha Bar and Grill or MoVida Next Door. Koko Black in the Royal Arcade is enchanting, or try Max Brenner in QV Square for one of the finest hot chocolates to pass your lips. AFTERNOON For a spot of culture, check out the latest exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Over summer, it is host to the Remaking Fashion exhibition which draws on the gallery’s extensive and rare collection of Pierre Cardin toiles. The Ian Potter Gallery and ACMI at Federation Square also host an array of interesting collections and exhibitions and make sure you drop by the Melbourne Visitor Information Centre while in the square.

NIGHTLIFE Melbourne is widely acknowledged as Australia’s live music capital. While in town check out the city’s most famous ‘rock bar’ – the Cherry Bar –located on AC/DC lane, no less! Rumour has it, Oasis guitarist, Noel Gallagher was so taken with the bar during the band's 2002 Australian tour, he made an offer to purchase it. For the jazz enthusiast a trip to Bennett’s Lane is a must. This iconic jazz club features a 7-day a week program. The Toff in Town is one of Melbourne's most high profile new live venues, which features a mix of disco, jazz, '70s soul and more. For more information, go to www.visitvictoria.com.au.

Talk Back with Shannan Ponton FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION: Bali! I feel that I'm home there. I've been over 40 times and don't really think I want to go anywhere else. It's the total package for me; people, food, surfing, climate, energy and atmosphere. I just love it. I always stay at the most beautiful place: The Dusu Villas Seminyak. WHAT DO YOU NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT? My Quicksilver Xplode Boardshorts. They're perfect for surfing, training and wearing everywhere and dry quickly. Also, my favourite pair of Asics Runners. I ALWAYS find time for a training session, no matter where I am. TRAVEL TIP: Always drink plenty of beer, seems to work for me. I’ve never had Bali belly! MOST EMBARRASSING/FUNNY TRAVEL MOMENT: Being strip searched in La Paz Airport, made worse by the fact that the curtain wouldn't completely shut!
