2012 CountryLink Inland NSW Tourism Awards
Winners Announced
The annual award ceremony is hailed as the ‘night of nights’ for the Inland NSW regional tourism industry. The theme for this year’s awards was country glamour and the night was a celebration of not only the NSW regional tourism industry but it was also a night to experience the best of what Mudgee has to offer. The 18 winners are now able to compete for finalist positions at the NSW Tourism Awards, which will be held in Sydney, later this year. Winning the Ted Wilson Award for Outstanding Contribution to Tourism by an Individual was Roger Collins, co owner and operator of Black Queen Theatre on the Ridge. TELL US WHAT THIS AWARD MEANS TO YOU.
N
ew South Wales’ best inland regional tourism operators and attractions were named in late July at the 2012 CountryLink Inland NSW Tourism Awards in Mudgee.
Attendees from across the state gathered together at the Parklands Resort in Mudgee to find out which of the finalists would take home a coveted 2012 CountryLink Inland NSW Tourism Award.
I think it’s just an incredible accolade from industry colleges because the submission was done by a group who got together and decided I should be on it. It’s absolutely amazing to me. To be honest it was an incredible shock because I don’t do anything that’s not for the pure fun of it. Being
We Welcome You to Leeton Shire on your next getaway!! Leeton is a thriving town offering a wide variety of experiences in the heart of the Riverina. The town exemplifies contemporary rural Australia with its rich art deco heritage, diverse agricultural practices and renowned country hospitality. The Leeton Visitor Information Centre (VIC), located at 10 Yanco Avenue, is housed in the restored former residence of the Chief Engineer of the Water Conservation and Irrigation Commission (WC & IC) building, built in 1912. This year marks not only the “Centenary Celebrations” for Leeton Shire, but also one hundred years since the precinct in which the Leeton Visitor Information Centre is located was developed.
to other VICs in the region. Local artists and hobby suppliers have the opportunity to display and sell their works and souvenir items on consignment with no commission charged by the Centre. This has been a successful innovation, raising community awareness of and increasing local participation in the Centre’s activities as well as instilling a high level of goodwill in the Centre’s operations. We at the Leeton Visitor Information Centre promote the Leeton Shire’s cultural, historic, business and natural assets and of course those of the Riverina region. Leeton VIC is open from 9:15am to 4:45pm (Mon-Fri) and 10am to 3pm (Weekends & Public Holidays).
In October 2011, our VIC staff and volunteers established a local art gallery and local hobby interest souvenir area in the VIC to create a point of difference
For further information, please contact the friendly staff and volunteers at the Leeton VIC via any of the below mentioned contact points: Phone: (02) 6953 6481 Email: enquiries@leetontourism.com.au Web: www.leetontourism.com.au

Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson RELEASING WRECK & RUIN 12 – X P t r a v e l l e r Vo l u m e 7 I s s u e 3
“Wreck & Ruin was born and gave us a chance to revisit the sounds of music that we love to make together where it can be traditional, but not conventional.”
I
n 2008, Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson became one of the only married couples in the history of the Australian album charts to have an album collaboration debut at number one, only coming second to none other that John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Almost five years on, Kasey and Shane have recorded Wreck & Ruin, the highly anticipated follow up to their 2008 platinum #1 hit album, Rattlin’ Bones. “Having been almost five year since we made Rattlin’ Bones we thought it was time to ‘tempt fate’ and challenge our marriage by making another album together,” the couple said. “We have both made solo albums in between but in the back of our minds we always knew we would end up making music together again.” According to Kasey and Shane, the writing process fell into place easier than they had planned so they grabbed a few of their musician friends and recorded everyone jamming the songs on a farm for a week. “When the situation is right, it’s not difficult for us to make music together,” said Kasey who lives with Shane and their children on the
Central Coast of NSW. “We click on that level. “Wreck & Ruin was born and gave us a chance to revisit the sounds of music that we love to make together where it can be traditional, but not conventional.”
and Adam and Eve,” said Shane. “I don’t know if that story ended that well anyway!” Other songs like The Quiet Life beg the question of wishing for a life away from the big city.
Wreck & Ruin was recorded in eight days at Foggy Mountain, and the 13-track album captures each of the various elements of Kasey and Shane’s love for music – from roots to gospel, bluegrass to folk, but always country to the core.
“That song is about our lives,” Kasey said. “A lot of people and couples can relate to that.”
The album opens with the hymn-inspired Til Death Do Us Part, before launching into the title track, a mixture of banjo and bruised fiddle work all purposefully built around country influences.
“Absolutely,” Shane added. “We wrote that sitting on the back porch of the cabin and looking at the mountains and I was thinking I could easily do this instead of making this album and going on tour. I could easily sit here strumming and drink scotch all day.”
It’s as if the pair are stomping in a barnyard weighing up their differences, jamming in the name of revolution and taking a traditional genre and shaking it up for what it’s worth. The album’s first single Adam & Eve is loaded with religious imagery. There are serpents and sin and storytelling that’s part fairytale and two shakes Biblical. “There is no symbolic connection between us
“We’ve all thought hey I just want to swap this life for a quiet life for a while. It pops into your mind every now and again. I would get bored. Shane would love it though.”
Up Or Down was inspired by a day of listening to the gospel sounds of The Louvin Brothers’ 1950 album Satan Is Real while Sick As A Dog literally gets its name from the entire family being swiped by the flu earlier this year, and ploughs through a fast, nasty bluegrassstomp. The new album is out Friday 7th September, and the new single, Adam and Eve, is out now.

Visit Bathurst in the Spring Sarah has developed a beautiful garden over several years with wonderful rhododendrons and has established a nursery which is open to the public at certain times. Two gardens at Kirkonnell owned by the Bland Families will be open this year after a break for a couple of years. These are two large country gardens with large trees and many special features.
T
he Bathurst Spring Spectacular will be held this year on 27th and 28th October with 11 gardens open to the public from 9.30am to 5pm each day. What’s more, there are two new gardens in the event this year being “Mt.Tamar” owned by Judy and Chris Bayliss and a White Rock garden owned by Ken and Dawn Peterson. Bathurst Spring Spectacular is organised by Bathurst Gardeners’ Club and over the years has raised more than $150,000 for local charities. This year there will be at least five buses coming from all over NSW and of course many people will be coming by train also.
For the history buffs, there are many buildings of historic value in Bathurst including the Court House and the Goal. And Miss Traill’s historic house and garden will also be open with tours of the house available. Visitors will also be able to purchase refreshments at most gardens – these provided by local charities. Tickets are $15 each and can be used over both days. They will be sold at all gardens plus the Visitor Information Centre in Bathurst. Additionally, there’s the lovely garden of Sarah and Andrew Ryan at Yetholme.

Bodypeace Bamboo Clothing Look elegant, feel comfortable 20 – XPtraveller Volume 7 Issue 3
Bamboo fabric is arguably the most sustainable choice for clothing and homewares and the list of its environmental and fashion benefits is extensive and impressive. The fastest growing plant on the planet (and one third faster than the fastest growing tree), bamboo can grow to upwards of one metre per day. Botanically a grass and not a tree, it sends up new shoots after harvesting, eliminating the need for replanting. Bamboo is perfect for regenerating degraded areas – it is the fastest growing canopy and generates more oxygen than equivalent stand of trees.

GolfBuddy launch Voice, a talking GPS Rangefinder and a world first in golf Distance Measurement Devices
O
n 1st August, GolfBuddy - the leading developer of golf distance measuring device (DMD) solutions and new generation golf GPS rangefinders announced the launch of its newest model, the GolfBuddy Voice, a talking golf GPS. Following on from its hugely successful global launch in January 2012 at the USA PGA Show in Orlando, Jamie Stark, GolfBuddy Australia General Manager, said the GolfBuddy Voice was revolutionary to the game. "For hundreds of years golfers have relied on the human voice of caddies to dispense vital distance information on the course,” Mr Stark said. “GolfBuddy has taken that timehonoured tradition and re-invented it for the technological age.” “The GolfBuddy Voice really is just like having a caddie with you." “Coupled with our experience and proven track record as demonstrated by the global success of our touch screen GPS products - the World and Platinum models, we are perfectly positioned to offer golfers the essential data they need to play better golf,” Mr Stark continued. “We have already witnessed phenomenal global demand and an unprecedented appetite for the Voice and are looking forward to offering it to Australian golfers.”
“It is quite simply the hottest gadget in golf.” A major breakthrough in the golf GPS market, Voice is the first of its kind featuring audio capabilities offering golfers the ultimate golfing experience. It is the smallest and lightest golf GPS on the market and the easy to use unit not only provides accurate distances to front, centre and back of the green of more than 35,000 golf courses worldwide, including around 1,000 Australian courses, it actually tells you. Distances are shown numerically on a small screen, alongside the hole number and par. Furthermore, GolfBuddy’s Auto Course & Hole Recognition technology and 24-channel GPS receiver, means the Voice offers superior precision because it always knows where it is automatically locating your position on the course and hole you are playing. The Voice’s Rotating Green View always ensures distances are given directly from your angle of approach and players can also track how far they have hit the ball with the Measure Distance function. It gives golfers the option to change from yard to metre readings, tells the time and has eight hours of battery life via a rechargeable lithium battery. Another major development is the Voice’s size. As small as a golf ball, yet light enough to be comfortably clipped onto a hat or visor, the Voice weighs a mere 30 grams and measures 4.3cm by 4.3cm. Its simplistic
design means it is straightforward and easy to use and has been designed to be operated and enjoyed by golfers at any level and of all ages. The GolfBuddy Voice is more than just an innovative measuring gadget for golfers, another major drawcard of the Voice is that it complies with the rules of golf’s governing bodies, The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA). As with all of GolfBuddy's GPS Rangefinders, the Voice is 100% fee-free with no annual subscriptions or course download charges to pay after initial purchase. It comes preloaded with over 35,000 worldwide courses, features a 40,000 course memory capacity and can be easily updated by connecting to a PC via a micro USB port for synching when new courses are added to GolfBuddy’s comprehensive global database or when course maps are updated. “In the competitive market of golf rangefinders, many claim to walk the walk and others talk the talk, however in GolfBuddy’s case, we are the only ones who indisputably do both,” Mr Stark said. “Furthermore, it is the simplicity and effectiveness of the Voice that is generating the phenomenal worldwide reaction.” The GolfBuddy Voice is available www.gpsgolfbuddy.com.au for RRP $220.

The Running of the Sheep
BOOROWA AT ITS BEST! E
ssential Energy’s Irish Woolfest will be held on Sunday 30th September 2012, the October long weekend.
“The Running of the Sheep” has been likened to the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona and is considered Boorowa’s special woolly version. It is not to be compared to the danger of the bulls as the sheep are cute and cuddly but certainly as visually exciting. Visitors love the sheepdog component when
they see the trusty kelpies leaping on and off the sheeps’ backs as they race down the street and they love seeing the four wheel motorbike meandering down the street when the sheepdogs leap on behind the farmer. This is an opportunity to see Boorowa’s fine Merino sheep up close and personal. The Street Parade follows the Running of the Sheep with a wonderful array of floats, bands and this year a Wool Fashion Parade with

up to 25 models who will display designer clothes. From running sheep, followed by the shearing shack to the end product - the beautiful woollen garments. A sheep is shorn and the fleece is thrown on the stage to receive a spiritual thanksgiving for the fine wool of the district at The Ecumenical Blessing of the Fleece. Sheep shearing and displays captivate visitors all day providing an opportunity to see sheep in

all their glory and this year, there will be Yard Dog Trials to showcase the power of the kelpie. A fine display of Boorowa Merino Studs will enable the visitor to see the fine stud sheep at close quarters. IRELAND VISITS THE IRISH WOOLFEST Essential Energy’s Irish Woolfest has a strong Irish component with Irish bands and dancers to create the Irish spirit. Cassidy’s Ceili will entertain visitors on the main stage with a lively Irish performance. Two bands will march in the street parade, The Canberra Celtic Pipe Band with their divine little dancers, and the Canobolis Band, have been stalwarts at the Irish Woolfest for many years. The Harlequin Bush Band will perform for the first time with a selection of Irish Reels and Jigs. Essential Energy’s Irish Woolfest showcases the Irish heritage and fine wool that is Boorowa.
