The Rise of Cirrus Aviation Services: A Leader in Private Jet Travel

Cirrus Aviation Services has swiftly emerged as a leader in the private aviation industry since its founding in 2009. This success story is a testament to the vision, dedication, and strategic acumen of its co-founders Greg Woods, his brother, and their father. Together, they transformed a dormant aviation certificate into the largest private jet charter company in Nevada. In an exclusive interview with BizAvJets USA Co-Publisher Eli Stepp, Greg Woods, President of Cirrus Aviation Services, shares insights into the company’s journey, its operational philosophy, and the bright future that lies ahead.

From Engineering to Aviation: A Family Legacy

Greg Woods’ entry into the aviation industry was not a typical one. With a background in computer engineering, Woods initially found himself disillusioned with the repetitive nature of his work. “Engineering is solving similar problems with a similar toolset over and over again,” he explains. Seeking a change, he took a sabbatical, and it was during this period of self-discovery

that his family’s legacy in aviation called him back.

Woods’ father, a corporate chief pilot, had previously been a co-owner in an aviation charter company in Las Vegas. When that venture ended, the opportunity to start anew arose. Seizing this chance, Woods, his brother, and their father decided to launch Cirrus Aviation Services. What began as a small, family-operated business has grown into a major player in the industry.

Building an Aviation Powerhouse: Cirrus Aviation’s Early Days

The early days of Cirrus Aviation Services were far from easy. After acquiring a dormant certificate from a Scottsdale-based company, the Woods family faced the challenge of reactivating the certificate and expanding their operations. “We started with just one aircraft, and then that one ended up going away because the owner had a problem,” Woods recalls. It wasn’t until 2012 that the company began to gain momentum, and by 2014,

Cirrus Aviation was finally making strides in the charter market.

Today, Cirrus Aviation Services boasts a fleet of approximately 30 aircraft, making it the largest charter operator in Nevada. The fleet ranges from the five-seat Honda Jet to the luxurious Gulfstream 550, and 15-seat Challenger 850 catering to a wide array of client needs and preferences.

Management and Charter: A Tailored Approach

Cirrus Aviation Services offers more than just charter flights; it provides comprehensive aircraft management services, tailored to meet the unique needs of each aircraft owner. “Our mission is to be the best management

company for aircraft owners and operators,” Woods asserts. This means offering flexibility and ensuring that every decision, whether it’s related to maintenance, charter operations, or stocking the aircraft, aligns with the financial interests of the owner.

One of the key aspects of Cirrus Aviation’s management service is its ability to generate revenue for aircraft owners through chartering. Many of the company’s clients choose to offset their ownership costs by making their aircraft available for charter when not in use. Cirrus Aviation has perfected a system where some of their planes are even cash-flow positive, a rarity in the industry. “We try to let them know what’s achievable and realistic with their aircraft,” Woods says, emphasizing the importance of setting realistic expectations and working closely with owners to achieve their financial goals. Woods also added, “We are fortunate to have

Navigating the Future of Aviation:

An Insightful Conversation with Paul Damron

In a rapidly evolving aviation landscape, few individuals stand as uniquely positioned to understand the intersection of technology, regulation, and aviation as Paul Damron. Currently serving as the Advanced Air Mobility Manager for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), Paul’s journey into aviation is as dynamic as the industry itself.

From Firefighter to Aviation Advocate

Paul’s initial foray into aviation began unexpectedly during his time as a wildland firefighter. “I was part of a Zion Heltex helicopter crew,” he recalls, “and that’s where I got my first real taste of aviation.” Growing up in San Diego, Paul’s fascination with aircraft was further fueled by watching fighter jets, like the Blue Angels, soar above his neighborhood. However, it wasn’t until later in his career, working with geospatial mapping and drones, that his path in aviation truly took off.

Having transitioned from a background in range management to geospatial development, Paul found himself at the forefront of drone technology. His work at the Utah Department of Transportation involved managing large datasets and working closely with drone companies to enhance UDOT’s operations. This experience naturally led him to a pivotal role within

UDOT’s Division of Aeronautics, where he now oversees multiple airports and plays a crucial part in the state’s advanced air mobility initiatives.

Advanced Air Mobility: Shaping the Future

Paul’s current role as Advanced Air Mobility Manager is both innovative and challenging. “It’s still a new concept,” Paul explains, “not many states have adopted the title yet.” His responsibilities are multifaceted, involving everything from managing public airports to pioneering advanced air mobility (AAM) systems.

“Advanced air mobility is the new frontier in aviation,” Paul states. “It includes everything from small package deliveries using drones to regional air mobility and air taxis.” This emerging technology promises to revolutionize how goods and people move, especially within urban environments. The task ahead for Paul and his team is to develop a comprehensive ecosystem that supports these innovations, while navigating the complexities of state and federal regulations.

One of the significant challenges in implementing AAM is ensuring that new technologies integrate smoothly with existing infrastructure. “We’re working closely with cities and municipalities to create zoning regulations that accommodate these new types of

Safety in Focus at 2024 NBAA-BACE: A Preview

Just as the year has brought a number of significant developments to the safety landscape for business aviation, the issue will be in focus as never before at the 2024 NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE), taking place Oct. 22-24 in Las Vegas.

“In just the past year, the FAA has been taking a new look at pilot mental wellness,” noted NBAA Director, Safety and Flight Operations Mark Larsen, who served on the FAA Mental Health & Aviation Medical Clearances Aviation Rulemaking Committee, which issued recommendations to the agency earlier this year.

“Equally important, this year also included the introduction of a sweeping new Safety Management System (SMS) mandate,” Larsen said. “Separately, but

significantly, Congress has passed a 1,600-page multiyear FAA reauthorization bill with key safety provisions.

“NBAA-BACE is where we’ll have the top experts to unpack the new SMS, and help you understand whether it will apply to your flight operation,” Larsen continued. “We’ll have the authoritative sources on the FAA’s evolving mental-fitness posture, and whether the changes have implications for your flight readiness. The convention is where top FAA officials will explain what the mammoth FAA bill means for the safety of your flying.”

The spotlight on safety will culminate with the 2024 National Safety Forum and Single-Pilot Safety

Vulcanair and Deltahawk Collaborate To Incorporate Jet-Fuel Solutions For Entire Vulcanair Family Of Aircraft

Vulcanair Aircraft, a manufacturer of general aviation aircraft, has entered a collaborative relationship with DeltaHawk Engines, builders of the revolutionary FAA-certified DHK jet-fueled piston engines to begin the development and certification process through FAA and EASA for installation of DeltaHawk’s engine into Vulcanair’s aircraft offerings.

An agreement between the two companies has been signed and sharing of engineering data and technical resources is now underway to incorporate in Vulcanair’s production of new V1 aircraft first, followed by the P.68 and A-Viator platforms.

Global availability of Jet Fuel offers opportunities for this platform to be sold where AvGas is being or has been phased out. Flight Schools, who are very sensitive to operational costs, also benefit from lower cost of ownership via maintenance and lower fuel consumption savings as well as lower Jet-Fuel prices over other options. In addition, the altitude performance of this engine will enable higher density operations to continue normally, even on hot days.

Michael E. McMann, VP Sales & Marketing of Vulcanair Aircraft U.S. Distributor Ameravia, said, “Installation of the DHK engine in the V1 and P-68 platforms will expand the market not only because

of lower cost of operation but also because of fuel availability concerns. DeltaHawk’s highly innovative engine technology is already setting new standards for what a modern general aviation engine should be, and we are excited about what this technology will bring to V1 performance and cost of operation.”

Christopher Ruud, Chief Executive Officer of DeltaHawk added, “We are very excited about our formal collaboration with Vulcanair, and we anticipate the DHK engine in these aircraft will be a huge success in the training and international markets. In addition, this is a great step towards expanding general aviation market while ensuring and improving environmental sustainability.”

Following FAA certification of the DHK180 last year, flights of the new engine in factory aircraft have been ongoing at DeltaHawk’s manufacturing and flight test facility in Racine, Wisconsin, along with work by the company’s quality and operations teams in preparation for production of integrated firewall forward engine packages. In addition, DeltaHawk has previously announced 200 and 235 hp DHK engines well.

become the trusted partner of many of the most wellknown bands, entertainers, and celebrities, as well as the hospitality driven Las Vegas strip.” Cirrus Aviation is environmentally responsible and proud every flight in their operation is carbon-neutral and has been since 2015.

The Human Element: Staffing and Operations

Running a successful private aviation company requires a skilled and dedicated team. Cirrus Aviation Services employs over 110 pilots and 20 full-time maintenance staff, ensuring that every aircraft is maintained to the highest standards and that flights are conducted safely and efficiently. The company’s operations team is another critical component of its

aircraft, like eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles),” Paul explains. These aircraft, capable of taking off and landing vertically, will require new types of landing zones, known as vertiports, which need to be strategically placed within urban areas without disrupting existing structures.

Regulatory Challenges and Ground Operations

While the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) controls the national airspace, Paul emphasizes that states play a critical role in regulating ground operations. “We’re not managing the airspace,” he clarifies. “That’s the FAA’s job. But we do regulate what happens on the ground, like where these aircraft can take off and land.”

This ground-level regulation includes determining suitable takeoff and landing zones for drones and eVTOLs within urban environments. “We’re working with local governments to ensure that vertiports and other landing areas are strategically placed to avoid conflicts with buildings and other structures,” Paul says. This effort is crucial for integrating AAM into daily life, especially as more companies begin to offer services like drone-based package deliveries.

Aerial Awareness and Safety

One of the key concerns in the growing field of drone

success. “We’ve got a fairly significant operations department,” Woods notes, highlighting the importance of strong leadership and experienced personnel in managing the complex logistics of private jet travel.

Cirrus Aviation also places a high value on training and development. While experienced professionals are always in demand, the company has developed a robust in-house training program to bring new talent up to speed. “We like to keep all of our people on-site,” Woods explains, noting that this approach allows for better training and more efficient operations.

Navigating Challenges: The Impact of COVID-19 and Beyond

The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to the aviation industry, but Cirrus Aviation Services has managed to navigate these turbulent times with resilience and adaptability. Initially, the pandemic made it difficult to attract and retain pilots, but the situation has since improved. “We’ve been pretty lucky.

operations is safety, particularly in crowded airspaces. Paul notes that while drones are becoming more common, there’s a need for better airspace awareness among all operators. “We’re trying to figure out where the states fit in,” he says, “and how we can provide enough information to help those operators function better.”

Interestingly, while one might assume that equipping drones with transponders to make them visible to manned aircraft systems would enhance safety, Paul points out the potential downsides. “Mixing drones into the same system as manned aircraft could clutter the screens of pilots,” he explains. “As long as there’s separation of airspace, and drone pilots follow regulations, there’s no need to overload pilots with extra information.”

Instead, the focus is on low-altitude surveillance systems that can help drone operators be aware of other drones in their vicinity. “It’s about ensuring that each side—manned aircraft pilots and drone operators— has the information they need without overwhelming either.”

Bringing AAM to Airports

While the idea of drones and eVTOLs operating from major airports might seem futuristic, Paul confirms that it’s already in the works. “We’re establishing partnerships with airports for eVTOL operations,” he shares. These aircraft will initially

The Evolution of Jet.AI: From Jet Token to a Pioneering AI-Driven Aviation Company

Jet.AI’s story is one of evolution and innovation. Originally founded as Jet Token in 2018 by Michael Winston, the company was headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jet Token’s initial focus was on providing jet cards and fractional ownership opportunities, enabling clients to access private aircraft at agreed-upon rates. The company also operated a proprietary booking platform, facilitating private jet travel with third-party carriers as well as its own fleet of leased and managed aircraft.

In 2023, recognizing the transformative potential of artificial intelligence, Jet Token rebranded as Jet.AI, Inc. This name change was more than just a rebranding exercise; it marked the company’s shift towards leveraging AI to enhance its operations and create new revenue streams. Today, Jet.AI is publicly traded on Nasdaq under the symbol JTAI, a significant milestone that reflects the company’s growth and its commitment to pioneering new technologies in aviation.

Jet.AI’s Vision: Transforming Aviation with Artificial Intelligence

At the heart of Jet.AI’s mission is the belief that advances in machine learning and natural language processing have the potential to revolutionize the aviation industry. McNulty elaborates on this vision, explaining how Jet.AI is working to integrate AI into every aspect of its operations, from managing its fleet to optimizing flight paths and reducing carbon emissions.

“Our team is composed of experts in aviation, finance, and technology, all working towards a common goal: to bring the benefits of AI to the aviation industry,” McNulty states. The company’s management team, including Chairman Mike Winston, CEO George Murnane, Sales VP Kienan Franklin, and Chief Marketing Officer Jake Vale, is dedicated to executing this vision.

Jet.AI’s approach to AI is not just about improving efficiency; it’s also about sustainability. The company is committed to reducing the carbon footprint of aviation through various initiatives. These include optimizing fleets to ensure maximum efficiency and creating technology that tracks carbon emissions and facilitates the purchase of carbon credits. Their DynoFlight platform is a key part of this effort, advancing aviation’s carbon-neutral goals through high-quality carbon removal credits and emission tracking.

A Comprehensive Suite of Services: Meeting the Needs of Modern Travelers

Jet.AI’s services are designed to meet the diverse needs of its clientele, offering a range of options that provide maximum flexibility and convenience. One of the company’s flagship offerings is its Jet Card program, which comes with a host of benefits. With no blackout dates, 365-day availability, and no repositioning or ferry fees, the Jet.AI Aviation Jet Card program is designed to offer seamless access to private air travel. Clients can upsize or downsize the aircraft based on their specific mission, thanks to the program’s interchange capability. This flexibility ensures that flight hours are applied efficiently, regardless of the aircraft chosen.

The convenience of managing flights is further enhanced by the Jet.AI membership portal, where clients can book and manage their flights with ease. The portal also provides access to account management features, including billing history, flight hours usage, and account balances. Trip planning is made simple, with options to book flights, upload passenger manifests, and arrange catering and ground transportation.
