KAWASAKIAND C ASSIO LOCK IN HYBRID ENGINE DEAL

Kawasaki’s best motorcycle engine should soar skyward by 2024 in the Cassio 330, first of a new family of piston-electric hybrids from French startup VoltAero.

Kawasaki started in aircraft and is ready to return, says Planning Division Manager Jamie Imai. “There’s not as much distance to an aviation engine as you’d think,” he said. The Japanese firm is explored the market at the world’s largest aviation convention and fly-in in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The new mock-up first debuted at the Paris Airshow in June. VoltAero will keep just one engine for early simplicity, but hopes to modify Kawasaki’s H2R engine and its six-cyclinder variant in six models, starting with five seats and ending with 12. The Cassio 330 will usually run on 330 kilowatts of lithium-ion battery power in a Safran E-Genius motor 100B. The Cassio 480 will be next, boosting performance with 480 kw for six passengers, said Founder and CEO Jean Botti. “We have already validated the entire technology to carry 12 people,” he adds, and conversion to biofuels and hydrogen power should be simple.

The 330’s first flight “by the end of this year or early next year” will be gasoline-powered, said Botti, “because we don’t want to scare the regulators.” The twin boom tail, pusher prop are uncommon but solid, he explains: “It’s still a classic, even if the shape is very different.”

It’s 29-feet, four-inches long with a wingspan of 32 feet, eight inches and a target useful load of 1,389 pounds. Maximum cruise speed is 180 knots with a range of 648 nautical miles. “It flies up

to100 miles on battery power,” said Botti, and that clean silence makes for ideal operation. “Takeoffs are all electric,” he said, “basically, to respect the environment and everyone in it.”

Biofuel certifications could follow and by 2035 the H2R engine could be certified for hydrogen power, said Imai, with simple modifications. “You don’t need a supercharger on an aircraft, so we’ll put on a regular turbocharger,” he said.

Is Botti worried these big futuristic plans could distract from first certification? “No,”he is certain, “We won’t do that.” The green fuels team is separate

and distinct from the certification effort in Europe. “The European Aviation Safety Agency has assigned a dedicated team,” he says, looking for FAA approval second.

Type Certification to produce by 2025 is the goal, Botti said, but by then they’ll have found a U.S. manufacturer and a licensing deal.

“Today we have 218 total orders,” and Botti said the first 70 were placed in Oshkosh two years back based on just a partial mock-up. Retail price will be around $1.2 million. Deposits of 15 percent save a spot.

The EAA Ray Aviation Scholarship program continues to make a difference for young people pursuing aviation dreams, as 400 scholarship recipients have now completed flight training.

The scholarship program is funded by the Ray Foundation, managed by EAA, and administered through the EAA chapter network. Through the program, EAA is able to provide deserving youths up to $11,000 to help cover flight-training expenses. EAA received $1.8 million from the Ray Foundation for 2023.

Since the program’s introduction in 2019, more than 730 scholarships have been provided to young people with a passion for aviation. The current pilot certificate completion rate for Ray scholars is 81 percent, with approximately 240 more scholars currently in flight training.

member programming. “The high completion rate of our scholars demonstrates how this program has a direct impact on growing the aviation community.”

There are EAA chapter and scholar eligibility requirements for the Ray Aviation Scholarship that indicates a commitment to success. Once a chapter is approved for the program, it nominates the chosen scholar for EAA’s final review. Many chapters are granted the full $11,000 for their selected scholar, but some chapters have committed 25 percent of the award to secure their slot in the program. All EAA and divisional chapters in the United States and Canada are eligible for a grant up to $11,000.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS AIR SHOW: BACK AND BETTER

When some annual event is canceled, it usually doesn’t come back, in spite of promises to do so. Not only has the Northern Illinois Air Show/Wings over Waukegan returned, but it was better than ever, with the EA-18G and the A-10C as headliners.

Many major cities have airshows away from the airports from which the performers take off and land. While these are good airshows, people want to get up close to the planes, speak with the aircrews, take pictures, etc. This airshow fulfills that need. Fans get to see the planes take off, perform, and land, where several hours earlier, they were standing next to them.

A stalwart for this show is the Warbird Heritage Foundation. Their planes from World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam, are in top-notch flying condition. These are joined by independent owners of similar aircraft.

There was the Propeller Aircraft Parade, which included the T-6 Texan, Yak-52 (Russian trainer), CJ-6 (Red Chinese trainer), T-28 Trojan, T-34 Mentor, L-19 Bird Dog, L-4 Grasshopper, P-51 Mustang, and A-1 Skyraider. A pair of A-1s later made simulated attacks on the airfield, accompanied by pyrotechnics.

The Jet Parade included the F-86 Sabre, L-39 Albatross, L-29 Delphin, T-33 Shooting Star, T-2 Buckeye, and A-4 Skyhawk. The A-4 later put on quite a show, where a person who was not wellversed in aviation, could have thought that this was a modern day frontline fighter.

This was an air show, but jets are a big part of airshows, and the crowd was thrilled by the Dragon’s Fyre Jet Truck, a 1940 pick-up truck, powered by a GE J85-17 jet engine, as it ran down the runway as though it was a dragstrip.

Susan Dacy (Super Stearman), Galen Killam (RV4), Mike Vaknin (Extra

300), and Bob Richards (Pitts S-1SS) did things with their planes that planes are not supposed to be able to do. The benefit of an airshow by a runway is that their demonstrations began the moment they lifted off the runway and did not end until they landed, something that fans at offrunway airshows do not get to see.

Many airshows have had demonstrations of the FA-18 Hornet and Super Hornet, but few have seen the EA-18G Growler, an electronic warfare variant of the Super Hornet that has replaced the

four-seat EA-6B Prowler. The Prowler had an ECM pod on the top of its tail, while the Growler has them on its wingtips. These planes are based at NAS Whidbey Island, Wash.

In addition to their demo maneuvers, they were part of the Navy Legacy Flight, lead by a F-4U Corsair, accompanied by the A-4 Skyhwk.

The A-10C demo followed. This plane, named the Memphis Belle, is the only A-10 that is painted in the woodland camouflage scheme used in Vietnam. It is

used in training for the A-10 at DavisMonthan AFB, Tucson, Ariz. It made several simulated passes on the runway with pyrotechnics on the ground.

The Air Force Heritage Flight was lead by an A-1 Skyraider, followed by a P-51 Mustang, and the A-10.

I wonder what this air show will have next year!

The Air Racing Association is actively looking for a new location for the races, hopefully by next September.

The Jet Class was inaugurated in 2002 as an invitation-only class, featuring match racing with Czech-built Aerovodochody L-39 “Albatros” jets. Today the class has opened the field by adding other aircraft such as Provost, Iskra, L-29 and DeHavilland Vampires. This class truly stands for the “Fastest Motor Sport” with speeds exceeding 500 miles per hour.

“While we knew this day might come, we had hoped it wouldn’t come so soon. For so many around the world, Reno has become synonymous with air racing and it is hard to imagine the National Championship Air Races gracing any other skies than those in the Sierra Nevada. However, we are confident the event will continue. In fact, we are currently exploring several other possible locations to host the event in the future,” said RARA officials.

With its independent spirit, STOL drag racing is purely about who gets to the finish line and stops first. STOL drag racers fly on a designated track, about 2,000 feet in each direction, landing on or after a white chalk line. Precision and perfect timing are crucial, as any aircraft that don’t make a complete stop between runs are disqualified.

FALLEN RENO RACE PILOTS LIVED THEIR AVIATION PASSION: T–6 C HAMPIONS DIED IN MIDAIR AFTER FINAL HEAT

Chris Rushing, the reigning champion of the North American T-6 class, had four wins to his name before he crossed the finish line on Sept. 17 and clocked the fastest time in the Gold Medal T-6 race. Rushing, of Thousand Oaks, California, died moments later after his AT-6B Baron’s Revenge collided with the second-place finisher and six-time Gold Medal winner Nick Macy’s T-6G, Six-Cat, who also died in the accident as both pilots prepared to land after the Gold Medal heat, the final race of their class for 2023.

Their storied aircraft had recorded times in that final T-6 heat that ended the event’s long run in Reno, an annual gathering of motorsport speed that began in 1964. Rushing, 65, and Macy, 67, were the last of 24 pilots who would lose their lives during (or just after finishing) races in Reno.

Macy’s racing career began in 1986, though he recalled flying agricultural airplanes with his father years before. His father brought the future pilot to the Reno races for the first time when Macy was around the age of 10 or 12, he recalled in an undated interview(likely posted in 2012) by Naomi West for an air racing fan website. “I fell in love with it,” Macy recalled of his first spectator experience. “I always wanted to do that.”

Rushing, a veteran of the California National Guard who ran a nonprofit dedicated to honoring veterans with warbird formation flyovers, recorded his first official heats at Reno in 2005, and worked his way up through the Bronze and Silver Medal classes in much the same way Macy had.

Macy ran the family aviation business, Macy’s Flying Service, providing agricultural applications to farms in Northern California and Oregon, while working his way up through the field, improving each year until he won the Gold race in Six-Cat in 1999, the first of his six championships. Macy won the Gold Medal race most recently in 2012, according to race results posted online by the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA).

Rushing finished fifth in the 2012 T6 Gold Medal race, and would go on to

win four, including the Sept. 17 final Gold heat that he did not live long enough to celebrate.

“I am completely devastated and heartbroken today,” said Fred Telling, chairman of RARA and president of the T-6 Class, in a statement to the media after the accident. “These two pilots weren’t just an integral part of the National Championship Air Race family; they were a part of my family.”

The final heats were canceled and the event ended with that deadly accident, having persevered through many others before in the decades since the first souped-up airplanes rounded pylons in the Nevada desert nearly 60 years ago. In 2011, 10 spectators were killed along with pilot Jimmy Leeward, who lost control of his modified North American P–51 Mustang Galloping Ghost and dove into the crowd. The NTSB determined that untested modifications had weakened the aircraft’s elevator trim assembly.

RARA solicited donations online in the wake of that accident to help cover a $1.7 million increase in insurance premi-

ums following the 2011 accident, and the 2012 races went on as scheduled.

In 2022, an Aero Vodochody L–29 Super Delfin flown by 2021 Rookie of the Year Aaron Hogue, 61, crashed during the final Jet Gold race rounding Pylon 5. RARA announced in March that the 2023 races would be the last held in Reno, though the organization was actively seeking a new venue. RARA said in March that the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority cited “the region’s significant growth amongst other concerns” in deciding to “sunset the event.”

Rushing, the pilot of the Baron’s Revenge Race Team, was also president of the Condor Squadron Officer’s and Airmen’s Association, a nonprofit based in Van Nuys, Calif., that organizes warbird flyovers at various events. The group updated its website with a tribute to Rushing, vowing to “continue this mission in his honor.”

“Chris was known to many as a great man and a skilled pilot, passionate about aviation and serving the community,” the organization wrote. “Chris was a dedicated leader, and enthusiastically led the Condor Squadron in its mission to preserve our Nation’s military aviation heritage, flying hundreds of memorial flights in honor of our veterans and in support of our local communities.”

In Macy’s hometown, Tulelake, the city announced: “We will be flying flags at half [mast] on city buildings and putting out flags on our homes for the week… Such a loss for our community. It will be felt by all.” Other local tributes included Paul Simmons, executive director of the Klamath Water Users Association, who issued a statement: “Nick was a pillar of the community and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers extend to Nick’s family.”

Macy earned his private pilot certificate at age 18, according to the interview he gave to West about a decade ago. He earned a degree in agricultural science and pest management from the University of Nevada at Reno. He took over the family business from his father, Paul, a B-24 instructor during World War II, in 1985, the year before his first race at Reno.

“Our company philosophy,” Macy

told the Herald and News several years ago, “is providing excellent service to our growers and staying informed of the latest developments and technological advances in pest management and to implement techniques, including integrated pest management, to each field situation. It’s not a very easy job. Good pilots make it look easy. It’s nice to get out there and get the job done. I enjoy all aspects of the job. We enjoy the area we [are] living [in] and the people we work with.”

Macy wrote a letter to Congress in 2016, advocating for Tulelake Municipal Airport, where his business had operated for decades, and which was under threat by the pending designation of a national monument nearby.

“It is centrally located in some of the most productive ground anywhere in the world. We cover over 300 square miles and three states in order to provide service to our growers. We are licensed agronomists providing recommendations to growers on the use of fertilizers and farm chemicals on a wide variety of crops, which includes both organic and conventionally produced commodities,” Macy wrote. “I am here to state my story of success, to protect my business and the wonderful people that I employ while providing services to over 900 family farms. Within the last few years, one of my greatest pleasures was seeing some of my employees retire. This may sound trivial, but for a small business to have people retire means that we have provided good paying jobs for a long time. I want to continue my business at the Tulelake Airport so my children, nieces, nephews and employees will have the same chances I did.”

Rushing, a former California National Guard aircraft mechanic, told the Orange County Register in 2013 that the Condor Squadron’s flights throughout Southern California, on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, and other celebrations and commemorations, were a heartfelt tribute to military veterans, using the trainer that honed the skills of many Allied pilots in World War II.

“The most fun thing about it all? It’s a real honor to be honoring military veterans,” Rushing said.

Statement From National Championship Air Races and Air Show on Passing of Nick Macy and Chris Rushing

Editor’s Note: The following message was posted by the National Championship Air Races on Sept. 18.

On Sunday afternoon, around 2:15 p.m., veteran pilots of the T-6 class, Nick Macy and Chris Rushing passed after the T-6 Gold race had ended. Both individuals were longtime participants and staunch supporters of the event and we are heartbroken over this loss.

While the incident happened just outside of the race course, it did not involve any civilians or residential buildings. As is always the case, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are handling the investigation into the crash but we do know that this was not related to racing and happened in the course of landing. Though the families of both pilots wanted us to continue racing and the FAA and NTSB had cleared us to continue, we made the decision to cancel the rest of the event out of an abundance of caution and respect for all of our racers and families.

While there are inherent risks with any motorsport, we work diligently year around to mitigate these risks and safety is our foremost priority. Despite the sad way we have ended our storied tenure in northern Nevada, we want to express our appreciation to the countless fans and volunteers who have supported the event over the years. With the encouragement of our pilots, volunteers and entire air race family and the encouragement of both of these two pilots’ families, we will continue to work to identify a new location for the National Championship Air Races and hope to make that announcement in early 2024.

We want to express our heartfelt thank you to the countless individuals who work to put on an event of this magnitude. This was one of the biggest in the event’s history and we are incredibly grateful to all of the fans who show unconditional support through both the good and troubling times.

Rushing’s racing achievements in the demanding T-6 class nearly equaled those of Macy, who was tied for the overall lead in all-time Gold Medal wins. Rushing won his first T-6 Gold Medal in 2016, followed by four in a row in 2019, 2021 (the 2020 races were canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic), 2022, and 2023, when he finished first, at 234.063 miles per hour, not long before the accident that took his life.

Macy told the story of his racing team’s origins in an interview he gave for the article by West, recounting that the number was more or less randomly “slapped” on the airplane ahead of his very first race in 1986: “I just went down

to see if I could pilot it through qualifications basically was what that year was. I made it through the qualification period and from there it’s been an adventure… It’s been a real adventure for me.”

At the time, Macy’s racing team was composed of employees (the family business employed up to 45 people during seasonal peaks), augmented by other friends, he told West. He was getting ready, about a decade ago, to turn the ag flying over to the next generation, but planned to keep racing Six-Cat at Reno as long as he could: “I’d like to keep going on…I take it for what it is. I enjoy it. I’m lucky to be able to do it and have the chance to do it. I’d miss it a whole lot if something happened and I couldn’t do it.”

AOPA announced the 2023 scholarship recipients in July, and the winners were grateful for the assistance. One proud recipient, Alton Downer –a line service technician at Frederick Municipal Airport in Maryland –was awarded an AOPA flight training scholarship to continue his flight training. (An aerobatic ride in an Extra 300 in 2022 provided an extra jolt of inspiration.)

“I always wanted to learn to fly; as a child I’d look up at the airplanes in the sky and wonder how they did that,” Downer said. “I didn’t know anyone in aviation but when a job came open at the airport, I took the opportunity to at least be a part of aviation.”

Downer joined AOPA and applied for a 2023 scholarship, having applied previously without success.

AOPA’S

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Air Safety Institute (ASI) released a new video from its Early Analysis series providing an initial examination of a tragic accident that took place on Sunday, Sept. 17 at the Reno Air Races.

Two North American Aviation T-6 Texans crashed midair at the National Championship Air Races (NCAR) in Reno, Nevada. No injuries on the ground were reported. Tragically, the accident claimed the lives of esteemed air race competitors Chris Rushing and Nick Macy, both of whom were prior NCAR winners.

Following the final flag of the last race on the last day of the National Championship Air Races ever to be held in Reno, the two competitors in the T-6 class, Gold race category, dropped from the cool-down area and positioned themselves for landing on Runway 8. The midair collision occurred at some point during their transition from the cooldown area to landing.

“In Early Analysis: Reno T-6

there, but it is a blessing,” Downer said. Now Downer’s children are showing interest in taking to the skies. “I say not yet, daddy doesn’t know how to fly yet. But when I do, I’m going to show them they can do it too. Instead of looking up, someone else will be looking up at me.”

To learn more about the available scholarship opportunities, please visit AOPA’s scholarship webpage. Each scholarship comes with its own set of eligibility criteria, but applicants need only submit one application to be considered for all scholarships for which they qualify. The number and amount of all scholarships will be determined by donor funding, which may not be finalized until immediately before awards are announced in May.

To apply, all applicants must be members of AOPA. (Visit aopa.org for membership information.) The scholarship window opened Sept. 5, and applications will be accepted until Feb. 9 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time.

The You Can Fly program is funded by charitable donations to the AOPA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization. To be a part of the solution, visit www.aopafoundation.org/donate.

Midair, the AOPA Air Safety Institute wants to help pilots understand what is known about the accident. We look at factors that are likely to be the subject of an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB),” said ASI Senior Vice President Richard McSpadden.

McSpadden continued, “It appears there are three potential factors that may have contributed to this accident: decreased vigilance departing the cooldown area, procedural errors in traffic deconfliction, and diminished visibility below the higher-flying aircraft. We’ll look for the NTSB to determine the cause.”

Early Analysis videos provide an initial assessment of prominent mishaps that generate large public interest and may indicate important safety lessons for the general aviation community.

TEXTRON AVIATION EXPANDS INTERIOR MANUFACTURING FACILITYTO SUPPORT

DEMANDFOR CUSTOM CESSNAAND BEECHCRAFT AIRCRAFT INTERIORS

Textron Aviation on Sept. 18 announced the company is adding 16,000 square feet to its Interior Manufacturing Facility (IMF) to support growing demand for unique and custom Cessna and Beechcraft aircraft interiors. The expansion enables Textron Aviation to streamline production processes by centralizing machinery within the space to support efficient interior manufacturing for its entire lineup of Cessna Citation jets, as well as Beechcraft King Air and Cessna SkyCourier turboprop aircraft.

Cessna and Beechcraft aircraft are designed and manufactured by Textron Aviation Inc., a Textron Inc. company.

“Our highly skilled team designs each interior to create a customer’s ideal aircraft environment and experience, such as relaxation, innovation or productivity,” said Christi Tannahill, senior vice president, Customer Experience. “This expansion supports our team in exceeding our customer’s expectations with unmatched quality, craftsmanship and efficiency.”

The larger footprint allows the company to support new models like the Cessna Citation M2 Gen2, CJ4 Gen2,

Cessna SkyCourier, Beechcraft King Air 360 and King Air 260. Two products currently in development – the Cessna Citation Ascend and the Beechcraft Denali – will also be supported at the IMF facility once entered into service.

“At Textron Aviation, our commitment to excellence, innovation and the future of flight is leading the aviation

industry,” said Brad White, senior vice president, Operations. “Whether our employees work on the tip or the tail of an aircraft, or whether they’re part of the engineering, design, delivery or servicing of an aircraft, they join in our legacy of success.”

Consistent with the company’s commitment to sustainability, the facility

upgrades include energy-saving LED lighting and high-efficiency systems. Construction on the expansion is expected to be completed mid-year 2024.

About Interiors Manufacturing Facility

Located in Wichita, Kan., the IMF campus is a state-of-the-art facility for aircraft interiors manufacturing. The highly skilled team of operators and artisans utilize advanced technology to create and personalize each interior furnishing. From side and overhead paneling and upholstery stitching to the cabinetry throughout the cabin, the Textron Aviation IMF team of experts ensure accuracy and precision from start to finish. A native of Dallas, graduate of Vanderbilt University, and former USAF Air Force fighter pilot, Perot is also the first person to circumnavigate the world in a helicopter. Not long after his historic flight in 1982, he served as Chair of the Air Force Memorial Foundation and led a 14-year effort to build the United States Air Force Memorial in Washington, DC. The enduring structure pays tribute to the men and women of the USAF and its predecessor organizations. In October 2006, the Memorial was dedicated to the nation. In addition, Perot is the dreamer and developer of Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport, which is home to a vast array of flight services and serves as the cornerstone of one of the nation’s largest inland ports.

A passionate humanitarian and devoted public servant, Perot serves on several association Boards including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Hoover Institution, and is an Emeritus Board member of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. Recognizing Perot’s impact on aviation, his name was put forth by the NAA Board Chair and was enthusiastically approved by the NAA Executive Committee.

“Over the years, Ross has contributed mightily to our industry, as a record-setter, a pioneer, and as a supporter of so many causes that seek to inspire future generations while venerating the past,” said NAA Chair Jim Albaugh. “I know Bruce would enthusiastically endorse his selection as

Established in 2019 by the NAA Board of Directors, the Bruce Whitman Memorial Trophy honors outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to aviation or aerospace in the United States, and who by working with museums and other institutions have promoted an appreciation by students and the broader public of the sacrifices and legacy of members of the military service. Created in honor of the aerospace executive and philanthropist bearing its name, Bruce was posthumously named as the first recipient of the trophy 2019.

“It’s an honor to receive the FAI Whitman Trophy, an award that embodies the spirit of aviation and its profound impact on society,” said Ross Perot, Jr. “Just as the Wright Brothers’ legacy lives on, so does our commitment to inspire future generations to reach for the skies.”

Perot will receive the Whitman Award at the FAI Awards Dinner Presented by Gulfstream Aerospace on Oct. 25 in Dayton, Ohio. Limited seating for the dinner is available. To purchase seats, please visit the event website at naa.aero or directly at https://naa.aero/ general-conference-2023/.

FAA EXTENDS REMOTE ID ENFORCEMENT DATE SIX MONTHS

Drone pilots who are unable to comply with the broadcast requirement of the Remote ID Rule will now have until March 16, 2024, to equip their aircraft. After that date, operators could face fines and suspension or revocation of pilot certificates.

In making this decision, the FAA recognizes the unanticipated issues that some operators are experiencing finding some remote identification broadcast modules.

Drone pilots can meet this deadline by purchasing a standard Remote ID equipped drone from a manufacturer or

purchasing a Remote ID broadcast module which can be affixed to existing drones that do not have Remote ID equipment.

Remote ID acts like a digital license plate and will help the FAA, law enforcement, and other federal agencies find the control station when a drone appears to be flying in an unsafe manner or where it is not allowed to fly.

Flying With Faber

WHAT’S NEW WITH THE AIRLINES?

Iprefer to hop into my own airplane and fly to my favorite destinations. Quite often, the flight is my favorite part of the trip. Unfortunately, I don’t have the fuel capacity to fly nonstop to Europe or Asia. Or, many overseas destinations, for that matter. Plus, I don’t possess the skills to fly for hours over vast oceans.

I also love to fly on commercial airlines. Even though I’ve visited 100 countries, many of them several times over, the thrill of taking off for a remote outpost and landing at that destination never seems to diminish. I especially enjoy arriving at an exotic destination in the depth of the night, disembarking on an old-fashion set of air stairs and taking in the first moments of the magic and ambiance of where I have just arrived.

I have a special affection for many of the smaller airlines. In my experience, the service is often superior to that of the majors and the crews conduct themselves with less attitude of authoritativeness and condescension. Here is some news on some of my favorite airlines.

Condor Airlines

valled inflight passenger comfort and will accommodate 310 passengers with 30 seats in Business, 64 seats in Premium Economy and 216 seats in Economy class. The A330neo has an award-winning, whisper-quiet Airspace cabin, which provides passengers with a high level of comfort, ambience, and design. The cabin affords more personal space, larger overhead bins, a new lighting system and the ability to offer the latest inflight entertainment systems and connectivity. The A330neo also features a stateof-the-art cabin air system.

The new Condor Business Class offers 30 lie-flat (180 degree) seats in a 12-1 configuration with direct aisle access for all guests. The seats seamlessly convert to a 76-inch long by 19-inch-wide bed. Business Class guests have access to the latest movies, series, podcasts, and games, all accessible by touchscreen and remote control on a 17.3-inch screen in 4K-mode. The first row of Business Class will also feature four “Prime Seats,” with added space large enough to accommodate two guests who wish to dine together while enjoying an extralarge, 24-inch entertainment screen. The “Prime Seats” will feature added in-flight amenities including a premium travel kit, inflight pajamas, and a premium snack basket.

In Premium Economy Class, guests enjoy more personal space thanks to a generous extra seat pitch of 35 inches and a greater backrest angle of up to six inches. In addition, the multi-adjustable headrest and footrest at every seat ensures a significantly more comfortable flight experience. Both the Premium Economy Class and Economy Class seats have 13.3-inch in-seat 4K monitors with touchscreens, which can be used to enjoy the extensive in-flight program.

for more travel flexibility, Condor has also introduced a new fare that makes it easy for travelers to make changes to their originally booked flight plan without any penalty or added cost. With a “Flex Plus” fare, guests can change or cancel flights free of charge up to 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure. “Flex Plus” fares are available in all classes of service and can be booked with Condor directly, with travel advisors, or tour operators.

American gateways include New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Anchorage, Fairbanks, Seattle, Boston, Las Vegas, Baltimore-Washington, Minneapolis, Portland and Phoenix. Top destinations include Barcelona, Munich, Venice, Budapest, Zurich and Copenhagen.

EVA Air

EVA Air, one of my favorite carriers, is a Star Alliance member and one of 11 SkyTrax-rated five-star airlines worldwide. It also ranked seventh among the SkyTrax World’s Top 10 Airlines and has secured additional spots in SkyTrax’s top ten for Best Economy Class Onboard Catering, Best Business Class, World’s Best Airline Cabin Cleanliness and World’s Best Airport Services.

Royal Laurel Class business and 278 in Economy. Premium Economy Class will be added in 2024. The latest Royal Laurel Class business seats were designed by Designworks, a BMW company.

This year will see the arrival of more of Condor’s recently introduced Airbus A330neo aircraft in the U.S. and Canada. By 2024, Condor will have an allA330neo long-haul fleet serving its gateways across North America. The A330neo is the new version of the popular A330 widebody. Incorporating the latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, new wings and aerodynamic innovations, the aircraft reduces Condor’s fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20 percent.

Condor’s A330neo will offer unri-

A brand-new feature awaits guests in all three classes: Condor’s new A330neo offers high-speed broadband internet and onboard connectivity. The latest in-flightentertainment technology provides a wide range of films, series, and podcasts. To enable streaming, each seat has an extra holder for a mobile device. In addition, personal Bluetooth headphones can be connected to the aircraft’s in-flightentertainment system. Condor’s A330neo features a 2-4-2 seating configuration in both classes.

In response to the growing demand

EVA Air was established in 1989 as Taiwan’s first privately owned international airline. It is part of the respected Evergreen Group and a sister company to global container-shipping leader Evergreen Line. With a fleet of more than 80 Boeing and Airbus aircraft, EVA services more than 60 international destinations throughout Asia, Oceania, Europe and North America. Gateways in North America include Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver.

EVA’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with a maximum full-load range of 7,100 nautical miles, are currently configured for 304 passengers in two cabins, 26 in

EVA will begin retiring its older B777-300ERs in 2024 and plans a larger role in its future fleet for the wide-body B787-9s with a three-cabin layout. EVA is also in preliminary stages of evaluating next-generation wide-body replacement aircraft, including Boeing’s 777X and Airbus’s A350. In the meantime, the airline is continuing to deliver the high standard of service it’s known for on major long-haul routes from North America with B777-300ERs.

Technologies employed to build the Boeing 787 Dreamliner make the aircraft more environmentally efficient than other aircraft. The fuselage, wings, engine blades and more are constructed of lighter composites such as carbon fiber. Compared to traditional aluminum alloy fuselage construction, the advanced materials significantly decrease the air-

ROBERT CRIPPEN SELECTED TO RECEIVE THE 2023 WRIGHT TROPHY

The National Aeronautic Association (NAA) has announced that Captain Robert “Crip” Crippen, USN, Ret., has been selected as the recipient of the 2023 Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy.

Crippen is being recognized for his devotion to public service and the advancement of American aerospace; his achievements as an aviator, astronaut, and leader; and his selfless dedication to the future of humankind. After completing a degree in aerospace engineering, Crippen joined the USN and was selected for the USAF Manned Orbiting Laboratory. In 1981, he was chosen to pilot STS-1, the first orbital spaceflight of NASA’s Space Shuttle program. Crippen’s NASA career comprised of many firsts including serving with the first American woman in space (STS-7), commanding the first satellite refueling with an EVA (STS-41G), and commanding the first spacewalk by an American woman (STS-41G).

“For the last 40 years the name Bob Crippen has been synonymous with Human Space Flight. From his and John

Young’s STS-1 flight, which ushered in the Space Shuttle Era, to his leadership of the KCS, to his running of Thiokol, a major space contractor, Bob has contributed mightily to our country’s space programs. Beyond his formal roles, Bob has worked tirelessly as an advocate for technology, space travel, and exploration. Bob’s body of work clearly merits this recognition,” said Jim Albaugh, NAA Board Chair.

In 1990, Crippen was named Space Shuttle Director at NASA Headquarters. He followed that by serving as Director of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, providing leadership for over 13,000 civil service and contractors. Post-NASA, Crippen worked at Lockheed Martin as the VP for Simulation and Training Systems. In 1996, he became President of Thiokol Propulsion, which was responsible for producing the Shuttle Reusable Solid Rocket Motors.

NAA President & CEO Greg Principato said, “Bob Crippen embodies the criteria of this trophy, the most significant individual award in American aviation. His service and achievements will

craft’s overall weight and likelihood of metal fatigue or corrosion. Replacing fluorescent tubes with LED lights reduces power demand by almost half.

GE’s advanced GEnx engines reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent. The 78710’s high fuel efficiencies and range capabilities equip EVA to continue to enhance operating performances.

Boeing also engineered its Dreamliners to heighten the level of cabin comfort. The Boeing 787 is equipped with an advanced filtration system that improves cabin air. The composite materials that make up the fuselage result in a more airtight cabin. Compared with other commercial jets, the 787’s cabin humidity can be increased as much as three-to-four times, eliminating dry inflight air. The aircraft’s cabin pressure can also be controlled to make the altitude feel like the optimal 6,000 feet instead of the standard 8,000 feet. This boosts passengers’ blood-oxygen levels and reduces headaches and fatigue. Newly designed engine housings signifi-

cantly reduce noise and give passengers quieter, more comfortable inflight environments.

Air Tahiti Nui has been named a “Five Star Major Airline” for the sixth consecutive year during the APEX

This year, participating passengers reviewed nearly one million flights. Their evaluations were based on their own travel experience, as well as on the services and facilities offered by almost 600 airlines. Prior to being analyzed and certified by APEX in collaboration with Porsche Consulting, this anonymous data was collected on the TripIt from Concur travel-organizing app. These valued

The Polynesian airline now offers six destinations ¬– Papeete, Los Angeles, Seattle, Paris, Auckland, and Tokyo –providing a strong presence throughout the Pacific region and as far as Europe. Daily nonstop service to Tahiti from Los Angeles and Seattle is available. There are also nonstop flights from Los Angeles to Paris.

On your next journey, I highly recommend these three airlines. You will be thrilled with their performance. The flights might even be considered as one of the best components of your trip.

SAVANNAHTO OSHKOSH

Savannah to Oshkosh, with long cuts and detours to see friends and family. 17.1 hours, 8.8 logged as actual, and as Siri would say, almost 2,000 nanometers (nm).

Interesting tidbits:

•Right after takeoff from Savannah, I heard ATC tell an airliner behind me to turn left one degree. Seems as how there’s some regulation that requires 15degrees of separation, and there was only 14…

•On the flight north, I was on top of the smoke (mostly) from Knoxville to half past Michigan with no visible horizon and just a tiny patch of ground showing. Reports along the way were 3-5 miles in haze and smoke, clear above. Glad I wasn’t slogging through it VFR like Vic Syracuse in his helicopter! (But he won Grand Champion rotorcraft, and that’s got to be more than consolation).

•Was talking to a controller and he mentioned that my gas stop was Cynthiana-Harrison County Airport in Cynthiana, Kentucky. No big deal, he could get that off the flight data on his screen, but then he mentioned that they had cheap gas, an unusual comment. Turns out that that little town, and I do mean little, is his hometown.

•From southern Iowa to Knoxville, flew IFR at 7,000 because the clouds had not read the forecast. Only went through some occasionally, though.

•Stopped for gas in Vandalia, IL. I texted the stop to my sister, but the iPhone corrected the spelling to Vandalism, IL.

•While letting the autopilot fly the plane and me paying attention to situational awareness and alternatives, it occurred to me that I was using knowledge, judgment, and experience, but very little skill. After all, how much skill does it take to turn a knob or touch a screen? But, let the autopilot fail, especially with no warning and in a time of high workload, and it’s a whole ‘nother ball game.

30-degree nose down, 500+ feet near instantaneous altitude loss, ball centered and AOA on the green dot the whole way. He was astonished. It’s one thing to read about it or see a video, it’s another to see it with your own eyes. Base to final turn loss of control does not mean high AOA, does not mean stall/spin, just like a botched steep turn at altitude or a runway overrun does not mean stall/spin.

I also flew the Rebird sim, focusing on AOA. LockheedMartin provides the flight dynamics, and the Redbird AOA response to gusts bore no resemblance to what I observe in the RV-9A. I suspect that the gust model has no vertical component, or the airspeed is undamped, or a combination.

Based on this trip, and the flight with the editor, the next AOA data gathering flights will be on final approach in summer thermals and downdrafts. We’ll see what the data says… and the videos.

tude. In other words, 120 hp and the Rotax engines will put more. And the more powerful engine is more fuel efficient.

That all means that at 5,000 feet, my 160 hp Lycoming and either of these two will produce about the same amount of power. And my normal cruise is at less than 60 percent power.

Phil Lockwood of Rotax dealership Lockwood Aviation in Sebring, Florida, had the RV-9A at the show with a 915. Van’s provided the airframe, and Lockwood installed the firewall forward. For balance, the lighter engine had to be moved forward, and that in turn required a dorsal fin to be added to the RV-9A for yaw stability. The plane is still undergoing flight test, and spin testing is scheduled.

I wonder what that extra power would do for an RV-3, Van’s single seater, that I hear has exceptional handling when a lightweight engine is installed.

Lycoming engines, but in places where avgas isn’t available, the Deltahawk is the clear winner. Bearhawk (experimental bush planes) is adapting the engine to some of their models.

As I was standing under the SuperGuppy, I got into a conversation with some random guy when I questioned the terminology of some of the aerodynamics pieces on the plane. Wrong guy to argue with, he was the pilot in command, has been for 12 years, logging 600 hours.

One result of my base to final turn accident research is identifying botched steep turns as an accident mechanism. When I gave that forum at Air Venture on Tuesday, to an absolutely full Forum 3, two of the men in the front had witnessed such accidents. I also gave a demo flight to an editor and he was glued to the flight instruments on his side. 55-degree bank,

Sadly, there were two accidents at Oshkosh this year. A T-6 went into Lake Winnebago with no obvious cause, and there was a midair between an autogiro and a helicopter, right over the field. There are plenty of YouTubers that aren’t worth watching, to put it mildly, but here are two credible videos on those accidents from commenters with close, personal experience:

•https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=-ktf6LwYG8k

v=NQpbLujboI0

Turns out that the pilot of the T-6 was the daughter of a two-time Super Bowl-winning offensive lineman, and she had just celebrated her third wedding anniversary. Condolences to all. •

Rotax had their new, four cylinder turbocharged 915is and 916is engines there. They were in Kitfox aircraft and an RV-9A.

It’s interesting to compare maximum power (141 hp and 160 hp, respectively) and maximum continuous power (135 hp and 137 hp) – not that much difference in continuous power. These engines will shine at higher density altitudes as non-turboed engines, like the 160 hp Lycoming in my RV-9A, only put out 75 percent power at 8,000 feet alti-

Lockwood reports that at 11,500 feet, he sees 170 knots at 7+ gallons per hour, 15 knots faster on slightly less fuel burn than I saw in the last flight in the RV-9A. His airframe is probably a few knots cleaner than mine, but still. Also, winds aloft are generally higher, the higher you go, bad news half the time, good news half the time.

I remember that when I had my AirCam with two Rotax engines, they required Decalin fuel additive to keep lead under control when burning avgas, and there were other minor quirks. There’s lots more details and unique operating characteristics, like $30 spark plugs and $17 oil, and oxygen sensors that need to be cleaned every 20 hours if operating exclusively on leaded fuel, but still, the engine is an intriguing possibility, and one that many buyers will jump at. If I still lived in Arizona, 5,000 feet up…

Lots of interesting details here. The SuperGuppy not only has fore and aft c.g. limits, it also has vertical c.g. limits. And no surprise, it doesn’t handle crosswinds well, so flights are carefully planned, and are usually day, VFR. The most expensive payload he’s flown was worth two billion dollars. The plane has a type certificate, believe it or not, but because it is flown public service, no type rating is required. And this one is the latest in a series of SuperGuppys, number seven, if I’ve got that straight. • • • • •

We all know that modern fighters and airlines are fly by wire, that is, the pilot doesn’t directly move the control surfaces. Turns out that airhart (airhartaero.com) has flown a prototype fly-bywire system in a Van’s RV-12A, and is now working on a completely fly-bywire Sting aircraft with no mechanical connection between the stick and the flight controls. Really.

The engineering prototype RV-15 was there with numerous developmental mods, with many of those painted on the outside of the airplane. More detailed information from the factory is available here: https://vansairforce.net/15.htm

Their idea is that loss of control is a pilot phenomenon, so why not let the computer do all of the stick and ruddering? For example, there are no rudder pedals, and in a crosswind landing, the computers know where the airplane and runway are, which way each is pointing, and does all the control inputs for a perfect crosswind landing.

Deltahawk finally got their diesel engine certified, and it is as advertised. No surprise, it’s heavier than comparable

As mentioned above, my autopilotcentric flight to Oshkosh only required skill for takeoff and landing. The airhart system will remove even that tiny skill requirement, but I don’t know how they’ll address the knowledge part. One thing that would be nice would be if the system displayed all of the limitations and requirements for the airspace that the

U.S. DEPARTMENTOF S TATE C HOOSES EMBRY-RIDDLETO TRAIN DRONE OPERATORS

Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University has been contracted to assist in the development of curriculum and online training for small Uncrewed Aerial Systems (sUAS) operators for the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, Office of Aviation (also known as the Air Wing).

“The government has training standards and robust administrative policies and procedures already in place globally for everything that is crewed but nothing that is uncrewed,” said Dr. Scott Burgess, associate professor of Aviation and principal investigator on the project.

That’s where Embry Riddle comes in. An established leader in uncrewed systems application and safety –Embry‑Riddle became the first academic institution in the world to receive the Trusted Operator certification from the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), in 2018 – the university will lend its expertise in designing and administering a standardized training program that could potentially be used by government employees, law enforcement entities and civil aviation authorities all over the world.

“Their intent is to standardize sUAS training, certification and standardization globally,” Burgess added. “Our job is to offer our existing sUAS professional education, thus enabling their crews to perform to a set standard, as well as assist in setting conditions that provide a level of knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to or surpassing established international

sUAS crew standards.”

The final step will be to design courseware in conjunction with the Air Wing and offer training to students, earning them an industry certification in sUAS.

“The Worldwide Campus Department of Flight has worked aggressively over the past six years to raise the bar for UAS operational integration, training and standardization into various commercial and governmental disciplines, and the federal government came to us for a reason,” Burgess added. “They have been very open to our ideas, due to the fact that our strength in these areas is combined with

our knowledge in aviation safety. The DoS has also encouraged further ideas to establish a noteworthy program.”

Those new ideas will be mined from a wealth of industry experience and various projects led by Embry Riddle to help push drone technology forward. In 2021, for instance, the university earned a firstof-its-kind waiver to begin training aspiring drone pilots remotely through online video streaming platforms. The Department of Flight has a long history of supporting government agencies, such as the FBI, Daytona Beach Police Department, South Florida Water Management District, Conservancy of

SW Florida, Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management and the Government of the Bahamas. Around the same time, Embry‑Riddle was awarded nearly $2 million from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to collect risk-assessment data that will help integrate UAS safely into the National Airspace System.

Researchers at Embry Riddle also continue to leverage uncrewed systems in creative ways to solve real-world problems. Some of those applications are safety-focused, such as using drones to improve tactical response against active shooters or deploying them into hurricanes to more accurately predict storm developments. Other applications might surprise you, such as using drones to map ancient cities.

“We are very pleased to partner with the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Air Wing in this endeavor,” said Dr. John R. Watret, FRAeS, chancellor of Embry‑Riddle’s Worldwide Campus. “As leaders in UAS education programs, we are extremely well-equipped to support these operators and ensure they receive the highest level of training.”

Burgess is leading the project along with fellow drone experts from the College of Aviation at Embry Riddle’s Worldwide Campus: David Thirtyacre, Department of Flight chair, and associate professors Joe Cerreta and Anthony Galante.

DESTINATION: RENO AIR RACES

Awrong turn at Lake Tahoe landed me at the Reno Air Races, officially known as the National Championship Air Races. The competition spans five days and offers something for everyone in the aviation community. This year marked the 59th and final year at Reno of this spectacular event, which is held annually at the Reno Stead Airport in Nevada.

My arrival at the air races was unexpected as I was to have already returned home the night before from a two-day Mother/Daughter birthday road trip to Lake Tahoe. My mother and I had fun exploring Lake Tahoe with its majestic views and incredible parks that overlook the lake. We enjoyed a lazy day alongside the roof top pool and sampled delicious cuisine while staying at Harvey’s on the South Shore.

Thursday morning, as we were headed home, we decided to drive around the lake to its North Shore while continuing to take in the layers of blue water surrounded by high mountains and clear skies. I inadvertently continued straight when I was supposed to turn left and we ended up descending down Spooner Summit, the mountain range linking the

Lake Tahoe Area to Carson City, Nevada.

I was a little confused as the topography changed drastically from the lush green mountains of Lake Tahoe to the desolate high desert valley and realized that we were headed towards Reno. At this point we decided to extend our trip with a night’s stay at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno. I immediately noticed a sign for the Reno Air Races in front of the hotel lobby and knew that I was exactly where I was meant to be! I set out for the races the following morning...

On the morning of Friday, Sept. 15th, I excitedly walked up to the media trailer, looked up to the sky as the day’s races had already begun, and introduced myself to those inside. My arrival at the races was unexpected – especially to me. I have known about the Air Races in Reno for a very long time as my mother and late father often attended the event while staying and playing at the Peppermill Hotel Casino Resort.

My experience at the Reno Air Races was a lifetime fulfilment. Upon my arrival, I had the pleasure of speaking with the pilot of Bunny #62 and was able

PACIFIC AIR FORCES COMMANDER RELEASES “PACAF S TRATEGY 2030: EVOLVING AIRPOWER”

Gen. Ken Wilsbach, Pacific Air Forces commander, released “PACAF Strategy 2030: Evolving Airpower” during a briefing at the Air and Space Force Association’s Air, Space and Cyber Conference, Sept. 11 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii.

In lockstep with the 2022 National Defense Strategy, the Pacific Air Forces Strategy 2030 provides Airmen with strategic priorities to defend the homeland, deter aggression, and reinforce allies and partners in the complex and ever-changing Indo-Pacific strategic environment.

PACAF Strategy 2030 ensures the command’s 46,000 Airmen and civilians continue to evolve competence in areas

crewed for Brant ‘16, ‘17, ‘18, and ‘23. Over those years I have met so many interesting people and got to see firsthand just how rich in history and tradition the air races really were. Families and friends have grown up together at the races collectively forming the September Family. I feel very privileged to have gotten to see and participate in this wonderful event.

I met Brant somewhere around 2015ish volunteering on a B25 they were working on, and then worked with him on the 2016 Nut Tree Air Fair, and then on The Legends of Flight Collection pancake breakfasts in Vacaville. Over the years he has been sort of a closet mentor to me as a pilot, and he has made himself available to bounce many things off of him, imparting his years of wisdom and experience to me, and has also exposed me to many people and opportunities in the aviation community. Brant is highly respected in the aviation and warbird community. He is a man of sound judgment, and a cool head. I truly feel blessed to know Brant, and thankful for him in my life.”

As my day came to a close, I continued to look up and watch as fearless men and women aviators took to the sky with an array of acrobatic flying and high-speed racing. I was grateful to have had the opportunity to experience, for the first time, the final days of the Reno Air Races.

Forty-Eight hours later I was heart-

such as agile combat employment, maritime strike, multi-capable Airmen, resilient basing, information and intelligence sharing, and contested logistics.

PACAF is evolving airpower and setting the pace to preserve peace and if necessary, fight and win,” Wilsbach said. “We understand the challenges inherent to generating airpower in contested environments, recognizing it is fundamentally different than projecting power from safe-haven bases. Therefore, we embrace the acceleration of change, leveraging innovation to benefit the United States and our many allies and partners.”

The document outlines the strategic environment of the Indo-Pacific and expands on America’s strategic competitors and how they attempt to undermine the rule-based international order through coercive actions.

According to the PACAF Strategy 2030, “If deterrence fails, PACAF will be ready to fight. These operational priorities reflect the urgency to accelerate change to meet the challenges of this decisive decade. Informed by our finite resources, PACAF will focus on four priorities: (1) enhance warfighting advantage; (2) advance theater posture; (3) strengthen alliances and partnerships; and (4) shape the information environment.”

Over the course of three days, and with briefings such as “Building the Warfighting Mindset,” “Ready to Compete, Fight, and Win in the IndoPacific,” “Cyber Warfare,” “Partnering to Win in the Space Fight,” “Global Threats and Opportunities,” and “Air Dominance,” the theme of the 2023 AS&CC is “Defeating Multipolar Threats: A Strategic Imperative for

Airmen and Guardians,” further reinforcing the PACAF Strategy 2030.

“As the United States continues to navigate this decisive decade of uncertainty, PACAF must anticipate and rapidly adapt to new social, economic, and security conditions that impact the role of airpower within the Indo-Pacific,” Wilsbach said. “With the combined strength and experience of our Allies and partners, PACAF’s steadfast resiliency will continue to propel us forward to meet the challenges of the future.”

PACAF will continue to evolve airpower to set the pace over the next decade. View the full PACAF 2030 Strategy at https://www.pacaf.af.mil/Portals/6/AFA% 202023/PACAF%20Strategy%202030.pd f?ver=PznEcfuJ1speb7mHfqW6Qw%3d %3d .

broken to hear of the tragedy on Sunday Sept. 17th. Two veteran AT-6 pilots, Chris Rushing and Nick Macy, were killed in a midair crash as they were coming in for a landing after placing 1st & 2nd respectfully.

In Flight USA Associate Publisher, Annamarie Buonocore had a rare opportunity to take a flight with Chris Rushing a few years back and I was eager to hear what it felt like to fly in a tight VFormation with Chris in his AT-6 aircraft.

1.What did it feel like?

The day before I went up with Chris, my friend and colleague, Paul T. Glessner, set up the ride. He told me it would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I had never flown in such a unique and old aircraft before, so I was a little nervous to be honest. Chris provided plenty of assurance. It was a great feeling! Flying over the Pacific Ocean was absolutely beautiful.

2. What did it look like when you were in full V-Formation?

The formation that the Condor Squadron flew never ceases to amaze me. It was a tight and perfectly in-sync formation. On that day, the two other Condor pilots were flying Paul Glessner and Sy Robin, the founder of Sensor Systems, a well-known aviation company in Van Nuys. Being able to see the other planes do a little dance in the sky made it all the more entertaining.

3. How did it sound?

The T6 can be noisy. Of course, I had my headset on to communicate with Chris at all times. Once we got in the sky,

it was rather peaceful.

4. You mentioned that you are not a fan of roller coasters. How did you manage to find the courage to fly in a WWII era T-6 with Chris Rushing?

It’s funny because I was in Southern California that weekend for a relative’s graduation from Pepperdine University, and the family was going to Disneyland the next day. I couldn’t go because I was going to be delivering In Flight to local airports and attending a seminar on weather that morning. When I told my family that Paul had set up the ride, they were laughing at me because I usually avoid anything bigger than the MerryGo-Round at Disneyland. I have to say growing up in aviation, flying has always been important to me. Just like even seasoned public speakers get nervous before a big speech, even pilots get nervous sometimes. You have to override your fear and nervousness. I am a student pilot and have taken demo flights with formation teams, one of which took me upside down. It’s important to me, so I overcome it.

5. Any final thoughts?

I enjoyed flying with Chris very much and gained admiration for him after I flew in his T6. I watched him fly at Reno for a couple years following my flight with him, and he was remarkable. As a publisher and business owner, I really admired his leadership at Sensor Systems with Sy Robin. That company has an amazing story. I love the Van Nuys Airport and hope to take more flights in that area.

I feel heartbroken for both Chris and Nick and on behalf of the team at In Flight USA, we wish them blue skies and to their families, peace in knowing these men contributed significantly to the aviation community. They are legends.

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to share in the Reno Air Races for my first and only time!

2023 NBAA-BACE EXHIBITORS TO SHOWCASETHE FUTUREOF BUSINESS AVIATION

The pace of change in business aviation is as fast as ever, and leading companies are continually investing and innovating to meet the opportunities on the industry’s horizon – a reality that will be on full display at the 2023 NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE).

More than 800 NBAA-BACE exhibitors will showcase the latest aircraft, avionics, engines and other propulsion technologies, as well as a host of other cutting-edge products and services as part of business aviation’s biggest event of the year, set for Oct. 17-19 in Las Vegas, Nev. at the Las Vegas Convention Center and Henderson Executive Airport (HND).

“We are excited to be back in Las Vegas for what’s sure to be our best convention ever,” said Laurie Lutz, NBAA senior vice president of events. “Attendees will have an opportunity for

an up-close look at the technologies driving the excitement, safety and sustainability of business aviation.”

The LVCC exhibit floor will host a vast array of exhibitor types, as well as the Emerging Technology Pavilion, with AAM aircraft and other next-gen technologies, and an indoor aircraft display featuring helicopters and fixed-wing airplanes. An impressive display of leadingedge aircraft will be on hand at Henderson Executive Airport and, for the first time at NBAA-BACE, a series of advanced air mobility flights will take place at the airport.

View a list full list of exhibitors at both venues, and visit the NBAA-BACE show planner on the NBAA website (nbaa.org) for an easy-to-use tool to create a personalized calendar of exhibitor meetings.

Many exhibitors have taken a sustainability pledge to support efforts to make this year’s edition of NBAA-BACE the most

sustainable to date. The pledge includes commitments for reducing printed materials, use of sustainable materials in booth construction, and other sustainability measures.

Several programs are being held in advance of the convention. Visit the website event’s page for details: https://nbaa.org/events/2023-nbaa-business-aviation-convention-exhibitionnbaa-bace/program-schedule-2023-nbaabace/agenda-2023-nbaa-bace/.

Full registration for NBAA-BACE provides access to indoor exhibits at the Las Vegas Convention Center, the aircraft display of aircraft at Henderson Executive Airport and education sessions for all three days of the show. Online full registration for NBAA members is $390 and $640 for non-members. On-site full registration for NBAA members is $510 and $760 for non-members. NBAA NAMES NEL STUBBSAS RECIPIENTOF 2023 JACK DOSWELL AWARD

The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) will award its John P. “Jack” Doswell Award upon Nel Stubbs, a preeminent authority whose guidance has optimized the ownership and use of business aircraft for countless entrepreneurs and companies worldwide.

The association will present Stubbs with the award during NBAA’s 2023 Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) taking place Oct. 17-19 in Las Vegas, Nev.

“Nel’s unequaled ability to analyze and articulate critical considerations for optimizing business aircraft use has been essential to success for organizations of all types and sizes,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. “We are pleased to present her with our Doswell Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions and service to the business aviation community.”

Stubbs is widely considered a fore-

most strategist in aviation tax planning and audits, cost and financial analysis, budgeting, and aircraft ownership and operating structures. She joined aviation research and consulting firm Conklin & de Decker in 1999 and became an owner in 2000, remaining with the company when it was acquired by JSSI in April 2018. She currently serves as vice president of JSSI’s Conklin & de Decker business unit.

Prior to her current role, Stubbs was a longtime employee of NBAA, joining the association in 1987 and becoming senior manager, tax issues in January 1993. In that position, she was instrumental in developing NBAA’s tax program – including the association’s State Tax Report, which remains an industry standard – as well as in forming the NBAA Tax Committee, on which she served as initial staff liaison.

Stubbs currently serves on the National Air Transportation Association’s

(NATA’s) Air Charter Committee, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Business Industry Advisory Board and the NBAA Tax Committee.

She has previously served on the NBAA Advisory Board, Helicopter Association International’s (HAI’s) Finance and Leasing Committee and on boards of directors for the National Aircraft Finance Association (NAFA) and the Arizona Business Aviation Association (AZBAA). Stubbs also is a frequently requested speaker at industry seminars and forums and has been widely published in the aviation trade press.

Created in 1987 in memory of John P. “Jack” Doswell, a steadfast industry advocate and business aviation pioneer, NBAA’s Doswell Award honors high standards for lifelong individual achievement on behalf and in support of the aims, goals and objectives of business aviation.

Nel Stubbs will receive NBAA’s John P. "Jack" Doswell Award during the organization’s 2023 Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) taking place Oct. 17-19 in Las Vegas, Nev. (LinkedIn, Nel Stubbs)

FIRST-EVER NBAA-BACE C AREER FAIR UNVEILED AMIDST HISTORIC WORKFORCE SHORTAGE PROJECTIONS

One of the biggest challenges confronting the business aviation community is the coming shortage of professionals, across the spectrum of available careers. The industry is aging, and the need for young professionals, pilots and those in maintenance, manufacturing, engineering

and other specialties, has skyrocketed.

Available data illuminate this challenge – for example, aerospace company Boeing projects a need for 602,000 civil aviation pilots and 610,000 aviation technicians over the next 20 years. Similarly, flight-simulation manufacturer and train-

ing provider CAE predicts in its 2023 Aviation Talent Forecast that 1.3 million civil aviation professionals will be needed in the next 10 years.

To help the business aviation community attract, retain and foster the next generation of workforce leaders, NBAA

is hosting its inaugural Career Fair at the 2023 NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAABACE) in Las Vegas, Nev. Taking place Oct. 18, from 1-5 p.m. and Oct. 19 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., more than a dozen compa-

ANDRE AGASSI, S TEFANIE GRAF – LEADERS ON , OFFTHE TENNIS COURT – TO KEYNOTE 2023 NBAA-BACE

The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) announced that international tennis superstars, respected entrepreneurs and philanthropic champions Stefanie Graf and Andre Agassi will headline the Day 1 Keynote at the 2023 NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE), taking place Oct. 17-19 in Las Vegas, Nev.

Married in 2001, Graf and Agassi are both widely considered to be among the greatest tennis players of all time. Following their retirements from the sport, the powerhouse couple have led multiple charitable, humanitarian and educational initiatives, with many of those efforts supported by use of business aircraft.

“Andre Agassi and Stefanie Graf are more than tennis icons,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. “They lead by example as models of professional responsibility, social involvement and a commitment to giving back to their communities, and our world. We look forward

to welcoming them to NBAA-BACE to share their experiences and insights.”

Agassi rose to international fame earning 60 men’s singles titles, including eight Grand Slam singles championships. He is the only male player ever to win all four Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal and was also a member of three winning Davis Cup teams.

Preparatory Academy, a tuition-free, K-12 public charter school in West Las Vegas that today hosts approximately 1,200 students. More recently, he launched the multi-sensory educational technology learning system Square Panda.

Graf, winner of 22 Grand Slam singles titles and 107 titles overall in her 17-year career, remains the only player to win Wimbledon, the French Open, the U.S. Open and the Australian Open at least four times. She is also the only woman player to achieve the “Golden Slam” by winning all four Grand Slam singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same year. Graf was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2004.

After turning pro at the age of 16,

Agassi was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2011.

Andre Agassi, Author, Philanthropist & Former #1 Ranked Tennis Player, will be the Day 1 keynote speaker at the NBAABACE, taking place Oct. 17-19 in Las Vegas, Nev.

Graf founded Children for Tomorrow in 1998, focused on providing psychological help for children and families who have suffered trauma from war, abuse or loss of the family. She established the organization in conjunction with Outpatient Clinic for Refugee Children and their Families at the University Clinics of Hamburg-Eppendorf.

The couple are parents of two children, Jaden Gil and Jaz Elle, and continue to be active in multiple business initiatives, entrepreneurial efforts, joint ventures and real estate developments.

The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) announced that entrepreneur, investor and storied “Shark Tank” television personality Daymond John will be a featured speaker for the Day 2 Keynote at the 2023 NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) in Las Vegas, Nev.

Recognized by one Yale University writer as a master of “the intersection of creative and analytical thinking,” John overcame dyslexia to launch FUBU (“For Us, By Us”) in 1992 from the basement of his mother’s home. Initial funding came from a $100,000 mortgage taken against that home; today, John’s global lifestyle brand touts more than $6 billion in product sales worldwide. The FUBU brand is featured at the Smithsonian National Museum of

African-American History and Culture.

Since 2009, John has shared his knack for entrepreneurism and marketing on ABC TV’s business-reality program “Shark Tank.” The five-time, Emmy-winning show features John – known today as “the people’s Shark” – along with other entrepreneur-panelists who critique and often invest in contestants’ plans for start-up businesses.

“Daymond John’s story is one of the triumph over adversity through innovation,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. “We are pleased to feature him at our Day 2 Keynote and look forward to his insights and perspectives that will surely offer guidance for the business aviation community, as well.”

John routinely utilizes business aviation to manage his various companies, speaking engagements and other business

“We are excited to connect our exhibitors who are interested in bringing their recruiters onsite to the Career Fair at NBAA-BACE,” said Jo Damato, CAM, NBAA senior vice president, education, training and workforce development.

“They’ll have the opportunity to engage with college-aged students, attendees already working in business aviation and other job seekers, including those making the mid-career transition from the military.”

The event is open to anyone attend-

ing the show who is searching for a new job or career in business aviation.

“All are welcome as long as they are registered attendees,” said Damato. “If they register in advance online, they can upload their résumés and connect with recruiters virtually as well.”
