People Who

W elcome to the world of influential people. From social media, business, health/fitness to transfor-

mational leaders like self-help gurus, educators, authors, speakers, artists, coaches, trainers, and mentors. All are heroes too often invisible heroes. All are visionaries coming forward to bring a message of hope and possibilities and developing a platform for creativity and excellence.

Our definition of an influential person is someone who chooses to impact those around them for the better, someone who encourages people to think beyond their own life so that they will aspire to inspire others. Influence is not enforced but gently led by personal example and. education. While big media would convince us that the world’s influencers are all on the ‘main’ stage we at Influential People Magazine disagree. Yes, we may read a book or see someone in a news report, but those people are too distant from our own sphere to make them relatable. We know, it is those in our communities who truly influence us, who teach us and inspire us, not by one deed but by how we see them live. The team at Influential People believes passionately in spreading that message and understands the need to provide exposure for people on a local level. We work hard to provide a forum for coaches, mentors, authors, writers, trainers, speakers, business owners, entrepreneurs, photographers, event producers, health & wellness practitioners, teachers, icons, heroes. We consider these people to be leaders whose voice and a story has still to be told to the world. Influential People Magazine is known as a place for emerging Influencers. Will you be one or will you find your next mentor in our pages? Join us to find out.

INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE 7

elcome back to Influential People Magazine! I am excited to announce this month’s exclusive interview with the inspirational Rodica Isabella Shaldan. Rodica is an award-winning Influential Producer, Actress, Model, and Humanitarian. Rodica, her fiancé Ron Whitaker, and Robert Gatewood are collaborating to produce the historical Bucks of America movie that is currently in production! This movie covers the true stories of Black Soldiers and other historical figures who fought for our freedom in the Revolutionary War, it covers the battles from the Boston Massacre to Bunker Hill. In this issue Rodica shares her intriguing story how she and her fiancé Ron started “Hope for the Homeless Humanitarian Project”, this amazing project helps homeless people receive access to food and the supplies they need to survive. February is a month to celebrate, honor, and recognize black history and culture. We must continue the fight for equality, justice, and recognition for all. This month supports and recognizes those who have fought and rose up against the face of adversity. We wanted to honor the memory of Chadwick Boseman. While Chadwick has amplified Black voices as a superhero in Black Panther, he truly was a “superhero” in real life. He inspired so many people by his resilience in battling colon cancer as well as his humanitarian work where he selflessly helped children who were fighting the same invasive disease he was battling with. His legacy still lives on as an influential person, a true fighter. This magazine is also dedicated to my dear late friend Frank Shankwitz. I will miss him terribly; he was an angel and hero here on earth. His legacy will live on as an influential person who co-founded the “Make A Wish” Foundation that helps children obtain their dream while struggling with life threatening diseases. I met him when he and his wife Kitty started and growing the Make A Wish Foundation. I worked for him for a short time helping children obtain their dreams to become a model. In 2009 we reconnected and remained very close friends since. Frank was like a dad to me. When we would go to events we would sit together and share our stories. I got a lot of stories to share from the pub in Prescott he would frequent and can paint a vivid picture of the history. Frank told me he could not figure out why he feels so connected to me, like a daughter figure. We featured Frank on our September 2018 magazine https:// www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/1508378 where we were helping him promote his new released movie "The WishMan" and his "The Wishman" books. I continued to help and support him in his dream, and he supported mine. I watch him soar and he watched me soar in our dreams. Last, but not least, in this issue is our exclusive interview with one of the top 10 Animal Heroes, Susan Hargreaves who is the founder of Animal Hero Kids. This charity empowers youth by providing them with school presentations that highlight animal rescue, advocacy, and promotes a cruelty-free existence by youth. I pray that you will have the time to check out the interviews and articles from our awesome writers. I trust you will find each page informative and inspiring. I pray you will enjoy, learn, laugh, and share with others what you have found here, within these pages. ~Heide Dangelo POI FB: InfluencerHeideDangelo

IN MEMORY OF CHADWICK BOSEMAN Chadwick Boseman became a lasting legacy playing T’Challa in the Avenger movie “Black Panther”. This was the first superhero movie by Marvel that casted a black superhero, and almost all black cast based in Africa. Chadwick played his role flawlessly and made a profound impact on the Black community. Boseman has given the black community insight into what is it like being Black and a hero in the movie and real life. The Black Panther Movie is about more than the latest superhero’s journey; it’s also about black culture’s journey, and it points toward a future where it could be the culture. It acknowledges and celebrates everything from traditional African society to African American political debates, from the power and beauty of black women to the preservation of identity, all within the lush confines of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. The impact he has made and left on the Black community from his character and his real-life battles has inspired many. Chadwick amplified Black voices as a humanitarian when he selflessly helped children who were fighting the same invasive disease he was

battling with. He worked relentlessly with a dedication to making his vision happen. He has inspired many to “carry the mantle” like a call to service to rise to the challenges, despite the circumstances. Even though he has been portrayed as a superhero in a movie, he truly was a “superhero” in real life where he has inspired so many people by his resilience during his battle with colon cancer. He knew he had cancer when he made the Marvel movie but didn’t let cancer slow him down and his dreams. Boseman has passed away in 2020, his legacy still lives on as an influential person, a true fighter.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” The Bucks of America movie being created by Robert Gatewood provides a perfect homage to how the actions of the Bucks of America helped save our right to freedom. With all the civil unrest and turmoil going on in today’s America, it is the perfect time to look back and reflect on how African Americans are part of the foundation of this country.

IN MEMORY OF MARY WILSON Mary Wilson was a singer, bestselling author, motivational speaker, businesswoman, former U.S. Cultural Ambassador, mother, and grandmother. She was well known as one of the original founding singers of “The Supreme”, where she made history and became one of the trendsetters who broke down the racial, social, and gender barriers after their first number one song hit off. Wilson also worked in activism, fighting to pass Truth in Music Advertising bills and donating to various charities. Wilson was inducted along with Ross and Ballard (as members of the Supremes) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Mary passed away in her sleep on February 8th, however, her legacy still lives on as an influential person for her humanitarian work assisting non-profit organizations’ ending hunger, raising awareness, encouraging world peace, and helping children to realize their dreams.

IN MEMORY OF MAGGIE WALKER Maggie Lena Walker became a lasting legacy by becoming the first black woman to become a founder and editor-in-chief of the St. Luke Herald newspaper in 1902, then became the first woman to own a bank in 1903. Maggie Walker saw the struggle of the black community after the Civil War. There were millions of freed slaves working hard against the “Black Codes” that had prevented them from buying property, mortgages, investment capitals, checking accounts, or owning any businesses. This was still another level of oppression where Blacks could not participate in a part of wealth creation in the United States while the country was reforming into a new era. She saw an opportunity to start and make her St. Luke Penny Savings Bank a catalyst for economic independence in the Black community..

Walker has passed away in 1934, however, her legacy still lives on as an influential person. Maggie was so determined to make the world a better place than the way she found it by giving blacks a chance in the “rat race of life” and a launching pad for the advancement of many Black leaders.

At a time when America’s fate was hanging in the balance, free and enslaved African Americans mobilized to help the 13 colonies fight for their independence from the British. The British tried to entice these African American soldiers to fight for them with the promise of becoming free men, but they could not be swayed. The Bucks of America was organized in Boston and little is known about their campaign. Most of the unit’s history is constructed from eyewitness accounts because few records survived. A very well-traveled, astute, observant, and worldly-wise person with a good sense of timing, Adam prefers TV and film acting to stage as he prefers the more natural acting involved and the discreet nuances that come with close-up camera work too. His voice, and indeed the characters

IPM: What sparked your interest in playing a part in Bucks of America?

ADAM: Having served in the British Army myself I was very surprised that a guy like private Kilroy allowed to be a soldier despite his behavior. I know if I’d behaved that way in the Army I would have been dismissed. And not in a nice way. IPM: Things went sideways extremely fast at the customs house on King Street in Boston. What do you think might have been going through your character's mind just prior to and during the massacre? ADAM: Well, he wasn’t exactly a man of the of the highest morals, and things were tense on the streets. As the rioting was in full crescendo, he must have needed no encouragement to be himself, to go beyond the bounds of acceptable practices, but on a grander scale; he probably thought too that because he was a soldier, he would be fully backed by his superiors no matter what he did.

ADAM: The story sounded great and as far as I know it never been told from the angle, we are telling it from.

IPM: What was the most important takeaway that you think the reader should know about the person you're portraying?

IPM: You are playing a private in the British army who was present at the Boston massacre. In your research of your part, what did you find most surprising about this person?

ADAM: He was obviously someone who probably had limited education and a tough upbringing. Someone who had either always been a bully or had himself been bullied. The uniform made him feel

superior to the average American colonist. IPM: If you were the character you are portraying when the sentence was delivered or announced how do you think you might have reacted? ADAM: I would have been shocked and angry to have been appearing in the court in the first place. If I were, he, I wouldn’t have understood how I was doing anything wrong in the circumstances I was in. IPM: When assuming the role of an historic person or any role for that matter what is it that you do to help yourself psychologically become that person and remain in character for endless hours each day of shooting?

trying, stick with it. It can be very soul - destroying indeed. But once you start to make the right contacts it slowly gets a little better. But unless you are born lucky, acting is a slow game. IPM: What is your biggest achievement in the field of acting? ADAM: I was actually cast as General Douglas MacArthur in a big feature film which was released first in Japan on December 18th this year. I got to portray an iconic American person and I also worked alongside some massive Japanese talent too. The casting director and the actual movie director are big names themselves. So to be noticed by them and work with them was amazing. The film is called Nippon Dokuritsu, in Japan, and will be called Independence of Japan when released in the West. IPM: Where did you learn to become an actor?

ADAM: That’s actually a tough one to answer. When playing an actual person from history I first have to do whatever research I can. In this case all I have are relatively small notes and an Irish accent to work with. There is no video footage or anything concerning mannerisms, how he spoke etc. When I’m on set, in costume and make- up done, that is the final piece of my transformation into the person. From then on, I am him until I come off the set at the end of each days shooting. IPM: Is it difficult for you to quote, let go, unquote, and be yourself after long hours of being in character and then having to get back into character again a few hours later? ADAM: Actually no, not for me. I don’t " act" when on set. I AM my character. It's not a script I’m saying and there is no crew around me. It’s all very real in my mind. As soon as I am off set, I come out of character, have a coffee and relax. I find it quite easy to get back into character when called back to the set. IPM: During the times you're shooting a film is it difficult to maintain personal relationships with significant others and close friends how does your work schedule affect those relationships? ADAM: I’m not in a relationship, unfortunately, so it’s not something I worry about. If I were in one, they would know when I’m on set, communications would be minimal until my scenes were done for that day. I can talk easily later. IPM: What have you found in your research about Private Matthew Kilroy that grabbed your attention? ADAM: As I said earlier, I was surprised that someone who behaved like he did was still serving in the Army. Also, the guy must have made a lot of enemies along the way...maybe the Army kept him safe from them… IPM: What attracted you to begin a career as an actor? ADAM: I always wanted to be an actor, but then life happened, and I ended up in the Army for a while. I came into it quite late in my life, when I found myself wanting to change directions. I’d been bodyguarding for ten years and after having lost mates, and been in too many fire fights in Iraq, I felt I needed to do something else, safer. Thought I’d give it a go...and here I am. IPM: What is some advice that you would give to someone aspiring to become an actor? ADAM: You have to have a thick skin and be able to handle rejection....a LOT of rejection. But if it’s in your heart you can’t give up

30 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE

ADAM: I actually only did a few classes to learn about sets, how filming works, terminology etc. Acting comes from within, and because I’ve had a very full and adventurous life, not all of it good, I have lots of places I can go to mentally for good and bad emotions. Those things together with a great imagination made for a good actor. IPM: Do you have an important message you would like to share with our readers and aspiring entrepreneurs? ADAM: Just never give up on your dreams or ideas. Go for it...you are never too old. And by your dreams I mean YOUR dreams, not the dreams of others. We are here for a very short time in the grand scheme of things, it’s up to you to fill your life with more good memories than bad. Adam Templar

CARLEN: First and foremost, I would like to thank our director Robert Gatewood for believing in my talent and presenting me with the wonderful opportunity to be a part of this historic film. I admire the fact that our soldiers in the Revolutionary War were able to unite against both the British and slavery despite the disparity between races, to bring necessary changes to this country at a pivotal time in our history.

IPM: Did you do anything unusual at your audition that may have helped you to land a role and become part of the cast? If so, what was it that you did? CARLEN: Sure. CARLEN: In high school, when I was failing my band class in my senior year, I switched my elective to Drama (Theater) to regather my credits and that's where I gained my passion and respect for the craft of acting. I've also avail myself taking the opportunity to take a number of acting classes and lastly, I've taught myself a few techniques overtime. I am continuously learning on a daily basis to hone my craft of acting. IPM: Being an entrepreneur in your field, how are you able to manage to be an actor, print model, and songwriter in your life? Willing Or Unwilling To Are You

Give Your Full Self?

MELISSA HULL FOUNDER, TV HOST, PRODUCER, SPEAKER, AUTHOR, CONSULTANT

Copyright by Melissa Hull

When it comes to your commitments, responsibilities and relationships, are you willing or are you unwilling to give your full self?

They’ll be upset if I don’t. And on and on and on. It’s so important to get clear on what you’re WILLING to do and what you’re UNWILLING to do. But that’s much easier said than done – unless you have these tricks up your sleeve. Ready to approach your life with a willing attitude? Let’s dive in.

Finding clarity in life, love or business al-

A Mini Reflection: Are You Willing or Unwilling?

most always demands that you ask yourself

Are You Really Willing?

the hardest question – the one you’ve been avoiding. Lately, as I’ve been restructuring my time and my passion, I’ve been asking myself a tough one.

Sometimes we agree to things or willingly show up for a commitment – but with a begrudging attitude. We agree to something we’re actually opposed to. Or we shift into passive resentment because we don’t want to be there. That’s not fair to you. It’s not fair to the person you committed to. And it doesn’t do anyone any good. So, first, we need to understand what it means to be TRULY willing. What does it look like to approach things with a willing spirit?

Am I willing to do this? Or am I just doing this because _____. I feel obligated. It’s the “right” thing to do. I feel guilty. I already said I would. I did it last year.

40 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE

Being truly willing means showing up with genuine enthusiasm to get the job done. It means you’re excited and proud to make your contribution. True willingness is giving 110% of your effort, plus some of your heart. You may be wondering WHY? Isn’t it easier to just do the things we

have to do and give half our effort instead of all or none? Here’s why: Your word should mean something.

Your willingness is your commitment. Your commitment has a standard and a quality that is evident by how you present yourself and how you serve others. True willingness looks a certain way, and other people can recognize when your willingness isn’t true. If you’re not truly willing, and you water down your commitment by only giving it 50%, that is what people will remember. Maya Angelou famously said: “They may forget what you said, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel.” If you’re going to say you’re willing to do something, be prepared to give it your all. Be fully present. Put away the phone. Drop the excuses. Don’t leave one foot in and one foot out.

grace by giving lots of notice, recommending a replacement, or simply pausing your involvement while you recover from burnout.

Finally, let’s address those commitments you can’t walk away from simply because you don’t feel truly willing. Here’s the hard truth: You have to find the willingness. For you, that might mean having an honest conversation about changing, shifting, or delegating some of your responsibilities. Leave room for negotiations but keep your commitment. It’s a great way to find a mutually beneficial solution. At the end of the day, you’re in charge of what you stand for, what your word means, and how you make others feel. But you also have to be honest with yourself and in alignment with your dreams and goals. Take the time to be honest about your willingness, and unwillingness, and do whatever you can to even the score – because how you show up says so much about you. And don’t you want to say good things?

Be willing to share in a moment with others and make them feel the power of your presence – and your commitment. THAT is true willingness.

Signs You Actually Resent Your Commitments

How do you keep your cool when conversations get heated? What tricks help you protect your peace?

So, we’ve defined what true willingness looks like. But what does it look like when you’ve lost that will? It can be difficult to spot in our own lives, so here are some signs that unwillingness has crept into an area of your life: You have to be talked into showing up, or you have to talk yourself into it.

You fight the urge to avoid a person or event. You’re relieved when an “excuse” presents itself. You show up but find every opportunity to mentally “check out.” You reach for your phone too many times with certain people or situations. You’re making slow progress because your heart isn’t in it. You’re hesitant to share a commitment or relationship with the world.

You feel like a commitment drags on forever. If any of these feelings or behaviors resonate with you, it might be time to examine whether you’re a willing participant in that endeavor. Ask yourself: Where have I been unwilling in my life?

How To Find A Willing Spirit If you’ve found an area or two of your life – a commitment, relationship, or responsibility – where you’re not feeling a true sense of willingness, then it’s time to clean up the unwillingness from your life. How? There are things you can stop doing, things you can’t stop doing, and things you haven’t yet committed to. First, start being more mindful of the things you commit to in the future. Don’t say yes unless you feel that fist-pumping excitement I like to call TRUE willingness.

Exclusive Interview with

Susan Hargreaves THE ANIMAL HERO

By Influential People Magazine International Journalist, Jules Lavallee

42 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE

Susan Hargreaves is the Founder of Animal Hero Kids, a charity that empowers youth by providing them with school presentations that highlight animal rescue, advocacy, and promotes a cruelty-free existence by youth. She has been an animal advocate for over 40-years and has been revered by World Leaders and Celebrities across the globe. Jules: You planted a seed four decades ago about Animal Hero Kids. Share your backstory. Susan: When I discovered what is happening to animals in the animal-based agriculture industries, on fur farms, in hunting, and circuses, I was shocked to my core. At 9 years of age after witnessing male chicks being gassed and suffocated at a chicken hatchery, I began to realize the truth about how our society treats other species. In 1980 I determined to be part of the solution and began organizing, investigating, writing, and educating about the realities of animal cruelty that the public is not being shown. I began giving free, customized humane education presentations for all grade levels to build empathy, the building block of kindness. Combine empathy and knowledge with the ability to critically think and what do you have? A prime motivator for positive change, and boy, do we need positive change and more kindness towards all species and the planet! In the past forty-one years I have been encouraged by the compassionate actions by youth, the youth I have met through the school presentations, and through the annual Animal Hero Kids Awards, I created, and of course, the Animal Hero Kids Crew. Jules: Animal Hero Kids has empowered youth to courageous action and true stories of animal rescues. Your books show the true stories of animal rescue and advocacy by youth which are heartwarming and energizing. Susan: In the Volume 2 edition of “Animal Hero Kids Voices for the Voiceless”, there are 284 pages of compassionate, courageous actions. There is the story of the 13year-old boy named Bradley, who was walking home from school and saw across the road a large dog hanging out of a

parked vans’ window being strangled by a leash around his neck, and no-one was approaching the canine because they were scared of him due to the dogs’ size and breed. Bradley sprang into action releasing the pressure around his neck and saved the dog from certain, painful death. When Bradley was at a school assembly he was surprised with an Animal Hero Kids Award and a letter and tickets from his favorite soccer team I had arranged. Then there was the 12-year-old girl who lived in Central Florida, Rebecca, she received a call from a frantic neighbor for help. A pig was lying in the road, the tail was cut and she had road scrapes all over her body, dehydrated, she had escaped from a transport truck on the way to the slaughterhouse. Rebecca called her Stella and cared for her back to health, that story is called “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” Depending on how old your readers are they may know that movie. In Daytona, there was a group of surfer high school-age teens who fought to free a stingray suspended and dangling from a pier. I love surprising kids or teens with Animal Hero Kids Awards during school assemblies with my constant canine companion, Lovey. She was rescued from the kill list of a pound and loves meeting kind folk. I am so proud of the recently published “Animal Hero Kids Voices for the Voiceless" Volume 2, Lovey, and the rescue stories, animal hero tips, classroom projects, and vegan recipes are all contained therein.

“I was an animal hero kid at 3 years old when I felt that animals had the right to live free of harm and suffering. It is vital to foster empathy and critical thinking in youth which leads to compassionate actions, and ultimately, a more peaceful world for all.” ~Joaquin Phoenix—Activist, Actor Jules: AnimalHerokidtober was a huge success. Share some of the initiatives. Any surprises? Susan: Who would have thought we could accomplish so much in this very difficult time and climate? World Animal Hero Kids Month/AnimalHeroKidtober went global. In Brazil an Animal Hero Kid convinced her local restaurant to feature a vegan AnimalHeroKidtober special, in Los Angeles, Animal Hero Kids was sponsored to feed plant-based food to the residents at 1736 Family Crisis Centers and we donated 40

Animal Hero Kids books to drop-in centers, schools, and sanctuaries. Children read some of the stories to the rescued farm animals and shelter dogs and cats. In Alaska, an Animal Hero Kid made catnip toys for shelter cats. There were two surprises to me, one a Kenyan teen, and a Japanese girl, cooked vegan meals for the vegan chef activity, they had simply heard about AnimalHeroKidtober on Instagram. The second surprise was I learned one of the Animal Hero Kids volunteers had a son who had just graduated from film school for claymation. I was looking for a claymator for the new “Veganza Animal Hero” character, and surprise! -he remembered me and was positively affected by the presentation when he was a preschooler. So now Wyatt, who is in the video on the left with a “Team Herbivore” t-shirt, see video…is in the process of completing our first ever claymation, Veganza Animal Hero! Jules: You have received support from celebrities in 2020. Why is celebrity important? Susan: When people have the power of a public spotlight to illuminate injustice and cruelties, it works! Why does it work? Because one tweet from Billie Eilish to her gazillion followers about how going vegan helps animals, the planet and makes a huge difference! I am so happy Maggie Baird, the mum of Billie has given a positive quote for the new book “Veganza Animal Hero” The quote Joaquin Phoenix was kind enough to give bits of help lift Animal Hero Kids.

Animal Hero Kids, the charity I founded has a small budget, the effect of celebrities using their arena to empower more people to think about their consumer choices is priceless. Your free humane education programs are so powerful. One of the goals of Animal Hero Kids is to gift the book, “Animal Hero Kids Voices for the Voiceless” to every library? Tell us about the program and your ebook. After every presentation I leave a copy of “Animal Hero Kids Voices for the Voiceless’ for the school library, group home, treatment center…I am presenting to. When I say other species, I am including humans by the way, as we often forget we are animals, too. We all deserve

to live free from harm, free from prejudice, free from suffering. So, where was I? Yes, the goal is to gift a copy of the book to every school library. I was over the moon thrilled recently by the fact the Connecticut school district bought ebooks for a virtual school program in October, this is the stuff my dreams are made of, getting these empowering true stories to propel more action and change. Jules: Tell us about “Kindness Education,” and the pandemic pivot. Susan: I began to mention it in the answer to the last question. I am 61 years old, not that age makes a difference, but my natural inclination for being all tech-savvy, social media maven is not high. Then the pandemic hit. We made videos underlining the connection between animals being overcrowded, suffering, and super viruses. https://www.youtube.com/watch? app=desktop&v=1Se02ezgdjk All of my school presentations in schools screened to a halt, as you can imagine. So, I had to get virtual, buy a zoom account, make more teaching videos….I am not saying I am an expert, I still have to stop myself from peering at the screen to try and figure out something which ends up being an embarrassing close up of my right eyebrow. Yet, all in all, the virtual world of engaging classes of children was a challenge well met, allowing me to reach far more students than one individual visiting schools in person. It also spawned a partnership with sanctuaries where we collaborate on school programs., a groundbreaking and effective result. Jules: You just launched a new book, Veganza, animal hero. Tell us about the book and the claymation, plus a full-length documentary film geared to all ages. Susan: Veganza Animal Hero swoops in to rescue all species and instill empathy in hardened hearts. Courage the mermaid is a defender of sea creatures, together they are unbeatable and are exactly what we need right now. The children’s illustrated book is gorgeous thanks to the enchanting artwork of Monique Martinez.

The documentary is geared to adults and demonstrates why I founded Animal Hero Kids and highlights why we need more animal heroes. This film answers the question, what is happening to other animals? The Veganza Claymation I am still searching for some voiceovers preferably by celebs to ensure Veganza’s message flies worldwide.

44 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE

I finally, at the urging of some savvy people created an author's website so these projects can be supported and explored at Susanhargreaves.com and Animalheroki ds.org Jules: Animal Hero Kids has big plans for 2021. Tell us about your vision. Susan: 2021! Can you believe it? This will be the best year yet, for Animal Hero Kids, Kindness education, and the sprouting up of vegans. The new virtual courses and partnerships with farm sanctuaries are gamechangers. For so many years I have strived to have the resources to open a mini sanctuary and education center for field trips and service-learning projects, the dream has eluded me, as the financial support is just not there for smaller organizations like Animal Hero Kids. Well, now, epiphany! HOW TO SEE YOUR PAST AS AN ADVANTAGE Focus on the positive side of the coin

G I T T E RANDRUP Copyright by Gitte Randrup I’m one of those people who grew up in what is considered an uncompromising environment, far stricter than most homes in the 70s and 80s. In my childhood home, we had strong values for neatness, honesty, and decency. We had to tend to our obligations and duties. We children were to be seen and not heard, and the expectation was that we would behave and do what we were told. My father had very clear opinions on matters, he was energetic and had the courage of his convictions. Very quickly, I learned to adapt and do what was expected. I became an overachiever and a perfectionist. I constantly walked on eggshells to ensure a calm, peaceful environment. Everything I did, I did to be seen and appreciated. All this had disadvantages in a modern society that highly esteems eloquence, making one’s mark, and presentation skills. Then it’s not so good to have been raised like it was in the 50s and to be neat and reticent. ” However, looking back as a grown-up, I realize that something good came out of it. As they say, there are always two sides to every coin. Ultimately, we choose which of the sides we focus on.” I’m not saying that it’s easy. It hasn’t been. It has taken a lot of work, blood, sweat, and tears. However, today I am in a much

HR BUSINESS PARTNER, BLOGGER, CONSULTANT/RECRUITER, better place. I don’t know if the fact that I’m hypersensitive as a consequence of my background. I assume it is. Regardless, the fact is, I am hypersensitive and experience everything that this entails, including tearfulness, overstimulation, fatigue, and taking things too seriously. Yes, I could choose to be annoyed by all the disadvantages that arise upon visiting a mall or attending a social event with a lot of people. However, this column is not about that. ” Because, over time, I have learned how to focus on all the advantages that stem from being hypersensitive and to use them to my advantage. Being vulnerable is also a strength. These are the cards I’ve been given, so I can simply play them the best way possible.” And what are the advantages of being hypersensitive? I would immediately capture the mood and atmosphere when I enter a room, at meetings, and the like. Often, I’ve been able to use this to my advantage in my work life because I knew what other people needed at the moment and could react accordingly so that everyone was heard. For me, when I work, it’s necessary to keep out any noise with headphones. Otherwise, I’ll soak up that noise like a sponge. However, this gives me the necessary tranquility

for immersion to get things done. Small talk with the person sitting next to you is, therefore, an active opt-in now and then. The same goes for working in open offices. Looking back, I should have negotiated to be able to work from home a couple of days each week. Then it would be a lot easier for me to concentrate. I can only call on others to try that. Then there’s my spare time. Here, I’ve also used sensitivity to my advantage. I love to dance, and I dance the Argentine tango a couple of times a week. My sensitivity makes me a good dancer, as I quickly perceive and react to the lead of my dancing partners. Also, because the music goes directly into my body, I use it actively while dancing. Are you one of those people who are irritated about your sensitivity and who just wants it to go away? If so, I urge you to consider simply focusing on its positive side. Your sensitivity will follow you through life anyway. Instead of fighting it, turn it to your advantage!

How I learned to accept and live with my perfectionism

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a huge perfectionist. Back in school, I once unraveled the entirety of a small rag rug and started all over again because I’d made a few errors. I also told my teacher that I’d pulled myself together and swot up a math exercise because I couldn’t stand bungling it. I wanted to know how to do it and be good at it. There wasn’t any other alternative for me. You may wonder how someone of such a young age can be that perfectionistic. I don’t doubt that it was because, as a child, I always sought to be good enough and to gain recognition from other people. As far back as I can remember, I’d always strived to deliver in the most optimal way possible. It was always in the air that I didn’t do things in an acceptable way and that I had to improve. ”It wasn’t that high grades were expected from me, or that I had to land a prestigious job. It was more a fundamental feeling that it was completely unacceptable if I didn’t behave well, said what I wanted to say, or didn’t understand a math assignment.” Later, when I went to university, I studied a lot – probably more than the majority. One time, I chose to leave the second part of an oral exam because I drew a subject that I hadn’t had the time to study. My teacher and sensor couldn’t understand why I wouldn’t give it a try to see how it went but that wasn’t my thing. I told them I’d take the re-exam when I had studied up on the subject. Then there was the time when I was devastated about a subject. I had failed for the third time and had cried in bed for a whole day. I felt so bad, my mother offered to stay with me for a couple of days. When I entered the job market, I realized, after a couple of years, that I had to work on my excessive perfectionism. Otherwise, I would wear myself out. And so I did. Today I am in a much better place. I’m happy that I did because, according to

research, excessive perfectionism is not to be taken lightly. Studies have shown that perfectionism can lead to anxiety, burnout, depression, and eating disorders. Professor Andrew Hill of York St John University has, in a study, illustrated that two types of perfectionism exist: perfectionistic striving, in which you seek the best result possible, and perfectionistic anxiety, in which you doubt your own ability and blame yourself for the fact that you cannot live up to your own high standards. The latter is the most dangerous and devastating.

down so that it doesn’t dominate your life or your mindset. If you succeed in controlling it, you can use it to your own advantage. ~ Gitte

Randrup http://grconsult.dk/en/ Gitterandrup Gitterandrup

For many years, I saw my perfectionism only as a negative trait. I spent too much time doing things and it was tough to always demand so much from myself and other people. Luckily, I ultimately discovered that perfectionism has its advantages. When I removed the worst part of my perfectionism, by removing my perfectionistic tendency to worry, I was able to enjoy the advantages of delivering high-quality products. If you’re a perfectionist, you may recognize the following advantages. You’re the one who’s always wellprepared, and you deliver high-quality work. That scores you points with your colleagues and manager because they know they can leave tasks to you. You have a reputation as a skilled colleague, as you always deliver what’s expected and more. This can help advance your career in ways you otherwise wouldn’t have experienced. Personally, I’ve found that I’ve received new duties because I handled my current ones quite well. This made my bosses realize that I’d also do well with the next one. Furthermore, you know a lot due to your careful preparation. Soon, you’ll probably have the impression that you know more than other people do. All other things being equal, that’s an advantage in your working life. So, a dear perfectionist! Appreciate this part of yourself instead of seeing it as strictly a negative thing. You must trim it

DENISE M. MICHAELS GHOSTWRITER, AUTHOR, SPEAKER, BOOK COACH Copyrighted Denise M. Michaels

I was standing in the back of a dark, cavernous seminar room, where the staff always stands. That’s because we might’ve heard the speakers’ stories numerous times before or we get called out to take care of something. But mostly we’re fans and we’re there because we want to be. We learn something new every time. During the seven-plus years I worked for a couple of megabestselling book authors and speakers I noticed characteristics about human nature I found fascinating and that propelled me to do things my way. There’s an old saying, “I’d rather ask for forgiveness than permission,” and it describes how I approach marketing and getting the word out about my teensy, little business as a ghostwriter and book coach. I’d rather jump out a bit too far and see what happens rather than take mincing steps to see if anyone validates my point of view. What I saw in those seminar rooms was a few wealthy guys on the platform talking strategy, tips, and sometimes just the mindset necessary for success. No problem so far. The 1,000 plus people in the seats were seekers. They wanted a better life through more income but didn’t know-how. So, listening to someone who’s arrived seemed like the right thing to do. Everyone in the room came to get some-

thing and the majority left happy. But beyond all the tips and information which often are never implemented when they get back home, lies a deep chasm of unhappiness, a problem crying for a solution. Here it is: they often appeared to need some kind of permission or validation to do certain things or make bold moves in their business. You can say they need to: Get unstuck Get out of their comfort zone

Go out on the skinny branches … or one of many other similar terms. It all means stepping outside your normal, safe boundaries and doing something a bit extraordinary, audacious, and scary. It means taking a risk. As John Maxwell said in one of his many books on leadership, “A leader is someone who goes first.” Maybe it’s because I bought my first business at the young age of 25 that I developed the “creativity muscles” to try new and different things. I did enterprising things in high school and college to make money, too. After graduation, with degrees in Journalism and Marketing, I only spent three years in the corporate world as an advertising copywriter before setting myself free. Perhaps my spirit wasn’t broken yet and I never kowtowed to the chain of command.

Somehow, over the years, I developed the ability to trust my creativity and intuition. Okay, I’m not saying I’ll jump off the side of a cliff and figure out how to build a parachute on the descent. I mull things over – and then move powerfully forward. Need I remind you – the buck stops with you. If you’re looking for someone who will say “attaboy” or “attagirl” it doesn’t necessarily happen that way. You put out whatever it is you’re offering and the attaboys come back in the form of people who say “yes” and you turn it into dollars. If you’re waiting for permission before you put your message and brand out there in a big way – you may need a great business coach. Or it might help to toughen up a bit and learn to roll with the punches. Or, a combination of both. I recently started working with a client who hails from a rural state and has built a huge network of marketing organizations in other countries. He did it in Europe with a company that exploded and then flamed out. He’s done it with an old guard MLM in a Pacific Rim country. In a few months, he’ll do it once again on another continent. He’s as entrepreneurial and innovative as they come. The nicest guy you’d ever want to meet with a pretty wife and two young kids. He’s willing to get out on the skinny branches in an industry that attracts a lot of followers. I’m ghostwriting a book for him on how to go international with your business. Point is, I want to encourage you to look at how you approach the business activities that fall under the banner of marketing and ask yourself: Am I being innovative or following the pack? Am I willing to do something different or slightly outrageous? Do I move boldly or frequently seek validation from others? Authoring a book is a big, bold move. It tells every person who sees it online or in a bookstore, “I got something to say. And, if you’re smart and want to know more about what I know, you’ll pay attention and read. Now.”

2. What do I need to do to improve my self-esteem or confidence to feel comfortable speaking with audacity? Remember, it all starts from within. I’ve always been a powerful proponent of the notion your business growth cannot happen any faster than your personal growth. What tired old bromides are rattling around in your subconscious saying, “Don’t toot your own horn?” Or “Nice people wait for others to praise them.” Hey, I love when that happens, but most businesses aren’t successful purely on referrals alone. The process of authoring a book invariably increases your good feelings about yourself and communicates it clearly with future readers. I hope you walk away from reading this article feeling a sense of, “Ahhhhhh, now I know what I have to do to differentiate myself and get a flock of new customers and clients.” Remember bold is beautiful. Getting out on the skinny branches and taking a risk is attractive and builds your courage and confidence muscles. When you combine the two and offer stellar products and services your success and growth as a business owner is assured. ~Denise M. Michaels https://internationalbookwritingguild.com/ Denise M. Writing Your Book Don’t Go it Alone.

Yourself?

You’ve got good ideas, actually great ones. You enjoy writing, too. However, writing a book is an entirely different matter. You’ll want it to be emotionally compelling and connect with readers. You want to be perceived as an expert but without sounding like a bore or a showoff. You’ll also want to

If your business is about selling your expertise and wisdom to clients or customers like a consultant, a coach, a therapist, a professional speaker, a trainer, or a CEO that’s already true, right? Or are you one of the millions of small business owners hiding in the shadows with some confidence in your skills – but not enough to have confidence in your ability to be creative or innovative? If so, you’re the one who’d rather not hold your head up high and possibly get caught in the Tall Poppies Syndrome where the brightest, most standout folks might get their heads lopped off. (Figuratively speaking, not literally.)

build a relationship with readers so they want to find out more about you and what you offer: When you work personally with an expert who knows the path to writing a successful book the journey is much easier. You have an experienced guide on your side who’ll make suggestions to bring your book to a higher level and make it even better than you imagined. You’ll actually save time doing it right rather than doing it over and over. Let’s schedule a time to talk about your book vision by going to the Contact

Page. Let’s discuss what you’ve done so far and how I can help you best. I’ll answer all your questions and share my fees with you at that time so you can make the best decision for you.

If this is you I suggest you explore two essential questions: 1. Am I good enough to go out and say, “I’m the world’s foremost expert in ________?” If you are, great. If not, perhaps there’s something you need to add. Trust me – it’s not a college degree or ten more years of experience. It’s more about how you message the “________.” When my book came out, I claimed loud and proud, “I’m the world’s foremost expert in marketing for women in small business.” Why could I say that? Because no one else claimed it. I dreamed up the category. Maybe you need to dream up your own specific, highly niched category. Authoring a book will make it and you are more credible.

6 Reasons Marketing and Sales Should Work Together AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR KEYNOTE SPEAKER, BUSINESS STRATEGIST, SALES/LEADERSHIP EXPERT

Copyright by Meridith Powell

It’s an age-old problem, the friction between marketing and sales. In most organizations, they are like oil and water. With marketing feeling like they are doing all the heavy lifting – developing campaigns, strategies that tap new prospects and taking market awareness to a whole new level. While sales feel like marketing gets in the way of the important work – the actual sale, believing that deals only happen when salespeople make the calls, engage the customers, and ask for the business. When the truth is, they’re both right. In today’s marketplace, it takes both sales and marketing working together, as a team, to take your business to the next level.

they work together, most marketing and sales departments function in their own silos — working instead on their own individual goals and their strategies. The fastest path to growth and profitability is through the alignment of your sales and marketing teams. Here are six strategies you can use to make that happen:.

6 Strategies to Transform the Marketing and Sales Relationships 1.

Share the Vision – the vision for your company that is. Ensure that marketing and sales are designing their strategies, aligning their actions to support the overall vision of the company. Your company vision gives each department its purpose. It reminds them that the work they are doing is bigger than the department and silos in which they exist. It also reminds them that their success reaches beyond what they are doing impacts the overall success of your company.

2.

Unify the Goal – If marketing and sales are each measured, held accountable to, and given different goals; then it shouldn’t be a surprise that they don’t work together. If you want to increase collaboration and communication with sales and marketing, then the next step is to unify their goals. Never underestimate how powerful a goal is in driving behavior, and determining what actions your team members invest their time and energy in. A unified goal will fast-track the alignment of your sales and marketing teams.

3.

Force Communication – the more your sales and marketing teams, talk, the more time they spend together, the more they will understand each other. So with understanding comes collaboration and alignment. So you need to force that communication

Working together they can: Shorten the sales cycle Retain more customers Improve their forecasts Their market entry costs go down Cost of sales are lower And when the sales and marketing teamwork in tandem, companies report that they grow faster than those who don’t. The result? When marketing and sales work together, your market share expands, and your bottom line gets fat. However, even with all the evidence, all the benefits gained when

department meetings, impromptu huddles, and feedback sessions. Find ways and opportunities to get your marketing and sales teams to talk and share ideas. Besides, ensure they each spend some time seeing sales, and sales to shadow marketing. Walking a few miles in their shoes will give each new perspective on one another’s roles and challenges. 4.

Reward the Right Behavior – if you want sales and marketing to work together, then ensure that is the behavior you are rewarding and recognizing. Team members do what they believe in leadership values and place a priority on. So, if you are talking about sales and marketing working together, but rewarding individual behavior, then you are undermining your efforts. Redesign your recognition efforts to show what you value and what you want – an increased collaboration of sales and marketing.

5.

Shine the Spotlight – on the areas that are working. People learn through examples and stories. The more you do to highlight stories that show sales and marketing working together, the more efficiently your team can transition. Begin team meetings, send emails, shoot quick videos that shine the spotlight on examples of the areas where marketing and sales are not only working together but where they are succeeding. So focus your efforts on creating the story of marketing and sales working together and watch those efforts grow!

6.

Get Their Ideas – People support what they help create – period. So if you want sales and marketing to work more closely together, then you need to ask them how to do it. The more you explain why it is critical to work together and ask for their

input on how to do it, the more support you’ll get from both sides of the aisles – sales and marketing. Asking them “how” gives them ownership in the plan. It will ensure they take responsibility to make it happen. If you want to drive sales and grow your business, then look to the alignment of your sales and marketing teams. Ask yourself if there is room for improvement? What can we do to take it up a notch? In a perfect world, sales would respect what marketing does, and marketing would respect sales. However, the world is not perfect, and if you want to transform the relationship with sales and marketing, then you need to take the lead. Take the lead and follow these steps. Your return on investment will be ten-fold. Far more alignment of your sales and marketing teams that result in an improved growth strategy, and better bottom-line results. HOW TO HAVE GRATITUDE EVERYDAY

CHRIS SALEM SPEAKER/INT’L BEST SELLING AUTHOR, BUSINESS/LIFE STRATEGIST, RADIO SHOW HOST

Copyright Chris Salem We just had thanksgiving and now heading into Christmas. They say this is the time to be most thankful. However, we should be thankful every day. What stops us? It is not being consistent and putting gratitude as a priority to practice every day, so it becomes a routine habit. It is like working out. We have to put it into practice daily. Learning to be thankful every day changes our whole attitude and spirit how we look at ourselves, interact with others, and how we do business. Here are five steps that when put into practice will shift your attitude toward gratitude. The Power of “Thank You” These two words have tremendous power. They show respect to someone that their actions are noticed and important. Taking time to say thank you to someone from opening a door to making copies for your meeting goes a long way. It is easy to overlook and take for granted. Yet, a true thank-you with eye contact can go well beyond you. Expressing gratitude in this way creates a chain reaction that can empower others to do the same making an office environment thrive including your home life. The person being thanked will be more likely to show appreciation to other people in his or her life, leading to even more gratitude and thankfulness. Appreciate Being in the Moment Wherever you are just take time to be in the moment. Start right now. Be thankful for the trees that provide you with oxygen to breathe. Appreciate the paved roads that allow you to drive to work each day. The business that provides you the means to buy things you require and enjoy. Stress and fear are minimized when we are at the moment. Anxiety is reduced by not projecting in the future. This helps to reduce or eliminate procrastination. Being in the moment expands our gratitude for life and opens new doors and opportunities we would otherwise not see without it... Take Care of Your Vessel Your body is a machine that allows you to do so many things each day that we often take for granted. The ability to see, hear, and breathe is just an example. When we do not nourish our bodies with good clean

68 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE

nutrition and exercise then our bodies cannot function at optimal levels to perform the tasks required to live a prosperous life. The more gratitude you have for your body, the better you will treat it, ensuring that you stay healthy and intact for as long as possible. Share Your Value Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. Having gratitude for both is important. The ability to share our strengths adds tremendous value to others we serve in our personal lives and business. Your knowledge in a particular area can empower someone to come into their own greatness. Your craft in something can bring much joy to others that see the value from within. Sharing is caring they say and when done daily you will appreciate your strengths more by inviting others to experience them. Show Interest in Others We are one but with unique talents. Show your appreciation for the people in your life by showing interest in their lives and the lives of their loved ones. People want to feel important and loved—it’s part of being human. If you take interest in the lives of your friends and loved ones, they will take a genuine interest in your life in return. To your health & prosperity, ~Christopher Salem

MISTIE LAYNE: AUTHOR, SPEAKER, TALK SHOW HOST, FOUNDER

CTRL– ALT– DEL (Control – Alt — Delete)

Copyright Mistie Layne Do you hear “you need to slow down” from the loved ones in your life? Do you oftentimes fill your plate so full of obligations that you find little to no free time left over for yourself? Does your mind race with thoughts your life is spinning out of control?

If so, this simple three-step

guide to CONTROL your time by ALTERING your priorities and DELETING negativity may help you create

space and freedom in your schedule. We may use “busy work” for many different reasons, but the bottom line is we must make time for self-care and relaxation or we tend to resent the things we do. The command Ctrl – Alt – Del is used on our computers to get to our task manager to reset our tasks or reboot our computers, but we can incorporate that same technique in our lives as well. We can learn to utilize Ctrl-Alt-Del as a powerful tool to help gain simplicity, maneuverability, and control in our lives

by resetting our tasks. 70 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE

I have always been a busy bee, constantly filling my plate too full of projects, obligations, and work. My family constantly begs me to slow down and they say they get tired just hearing my schedule. There are many different reasons we tend to book ourselves to the max. Identifying your reason is the first step to creating your freedom from burn-out, sleep-deprivation, and exhaustion. Some people are hyper, go-getter type personalities that need to stay busy in fear of feeling idle or non-productive. Others may use their busy schedule as a veil to cloak having to look at themselves and work on issues in their own lives. Additionally, some thrive on the “recognition” of being the one that gets it all done. Which excuses are you hiding behind? Is your busy schedule a defense mechanism from having to deal with internal pain points, regrets, or unresolved issues in your life? If we never have time to address our pain, what do you think will eventually happen? The pain does not just magically disappear, we must work through our issues by addressing them and finding closure or resolution to achieve mental wellness. For those of us thriving from the “recognition,” we must evaluate and discern why we feel we need the validation from others. If you are ready to take CONTROL of your life by managing your time more productively and getting off the hamster wheel, this simple three-step guide is your ticket to freedom, both mentally and physically. CTRL-ALT-DEL your way to a less crowded, more productive lifestyle that allows you to both accomplish the things you achieve and have

time left over for yourself. We must gain CONTROL over our lives by ALTering our motives and DELETING the non-productive outcomes. Instead of falling in bed late every night with your mind constantly spinning with things on the never-ending “to-do” list, learn quick and simple habits that will allow daily accomplishments and mental clarity. First, gain control of your own life by deciding what YOU want and need to accomplish. Make a to-do list every morning by listing things by priority of needs vs. wants. Avoid making your list the night before as this leaves you feeling burdened and anxious about all the things forthcoming. By making your list in the morning, you have more mental clarity and focus with the refreshed attitude of a new day instead of going to bed feeling overwhelmed and obligated. Control needs to be established in your life and discerning the motive of the task will help decide if it is a want or a need for a better understanding of prioritization. Ask yourself if the item on the to-do list is a MUST do or WANT to do, and then quickly evaluate the motive behind doing it.

For example, you have a deadline at work for a project that you have been procrastinating for one reason or another but now it becomes a MUST and takes high priority on your list because you MUST complete it as part of your job. Meeting a friend for a drink or a movie would go toward the bottom of the list in priority that day. By controlling your list, you can create the space for the wants in your life instead of feeling you never have free time to fit those times in. The last part of this first step is creating a list of all the things you tackled that day so you can go to bed feeling accomplished instead of overwhelmed. Next, we must ALTer the things we agree to say “yes” to. As previously mentioned, we sometimes pile on tasks out of obligation, the need to be noticed, or because we feel pressured that we should. We must ALTER our thinking and realize we are the only person responsible for taking care of our health and mental wellness. If it

doesn’t directly fall into alignment with our motives and goals, we need to pass on over-committing ourselves. Learning to say “no” is not an easy task as we are left feeling guilty that we are letting others down. However, if we burn ourselves out for everyone else and their agendas, what is left over for our own goals? Ask three questions: What is the motive behind doing it? What is the outcome? Who does it help? Examine each task before agreeing to take it on as this will help you make choices on how to prioritize it on your daily list. If we say “yes” to everything, we grow resentful and angry at others instead Watch Dare 2 Share of realizing we could have been in control of our time. Find your with Mistie Layne healthyevery balance T/Th between @ 6pm CSTmeeting your obligations, your desires, and on 360tv.com helping others. Learn to alter your time by managing priorities daily. Lastly, it is time to DELETE the negativity and non-productive things that consume your time. If you are committed to something that you oftentimes find yourself angry about or resentful of, then DELETE the activity with total transparency instead of harboring those toxic feelings. DELETE the people or at least the number of conversations you have with people in your life that constantly dwell on things that are not going right instead of seeing all the things that are. Remember that misery loves company and for you to free up your time and mental clarity, you need to delete the negativity. What things do you spend time doing that is of no value? Are you wasting time with gossip, social media trolling, or gaming? Examine your life and delete things that are of no benefit to you or others. Finally, let go of bad habits, non-productive tasks, or things that are harmful to your wellbeing. Discover how you want to spend the extra time you have created and use it wisely. Consequently, as you clear your schedule, you become happier, more productive, and free to help others because you become a positive beacon of optimism. Take charge of your own life by resetting it with CTRL-ALT-DEL daily. Discover what is causing you to overbook yourself and then prioritize your day each morning with purpose and intent.

your day each morning with purpose and intent. Let go of obligations that are not aligning with your agenda, or those obligations that you secretly regret. Alter your mindset to focus on needs vs wants so you can tackle each task more productively. Delete the negative thoughts, negative people, and non-productive actions in your life to create space for the things you desire to accomplish. This is your life, make sure you are the one navigating it because you only have one life to live and one legacy to leave behind. Do you need to reboot? From the Depths of Darkness STEPHEN R S M I T H AUTHOR, SPEAKER, CEO, FOUNDER, BROADCASTER Copyright by Stephen R Smith Dillon, a man who for the most part lived an abundant and blessed life, has gone to hell and come back. His repeated poor decisions cost him everything he had in the past. He lost businesses, two marriages, family and friend relationships, and everything else in between. He survived a few near-fatal car accidents, deadly diseases including hepatitis C, and suffered from alcohol addiction, and mental illness. Dillon went through a drug and alcohol recovery program three times. He also consulted with several Physiatrists, attended self-help programs and counseling. It was two steps forward and three steps back many times over 25 years. Despite that Dillon was an honest, and compassionate person, he found himself fresh out of jail, homeless, and living in the woods with nothing left but himself.

Sustainable addiction recovery improves self-image and prepares one to be a productive individual Dillon found the LWN Live with Nature Foundation that was founded on the premise of a connection to nature, Source, and community, where the mission is helping a person in mind, body, and spirit. We have built a solid foundation of verified referral sources and have helped many people to recover from addictions and poor choices achieve a higher quality of life as the result of our educational videos and counseling network. Transformational change is a slow and not always steady process. Dillon had to go through many failures. He realized that he had been a victim of his creation and had to release himself of the self-hatred he held against himself. He had to forgive himself for his poor choices and behavior, suicidal tendencies, addiction, and feeling of worthlessness. Changing his perspective, thinking pattern, and attitudes toward whatever issue he was not comfortable with, issues like feeling that he was not worthy, good, or smart enough to accomplish whatever he was trying to do took perseverance. Dillon realized that he had to eliminate incorrect and limiting beliefs with new, positive thinking habits. He found that it takes a lot of hard work, determination, consistent healthy routines, and faith in a Higher Power to become successful and stay on the right path. Dillon takes one day at a

time and has learned from his mistakes, even better, he learns from the mistakes of others. Dillon just does not give up.

Addiction recovery and a purposeful productive life starts with a thought and some imagination. Every day Dillon wakes up is a new day that he can paint the canvas in any way he chooses. He starts his day early, three or four o’clock in the morning. The first thing he does is say a prayer of gratitude. Then, he listens to inspirational videos and enters a positive thinking mode and attitude which helps guide him to become a better person. He proves that barriers can be broken down and obstacles can be overcome. This has enabled him to become a reliable father to his children, and someone his family, friends, and the community can count on. Today with the help of LWN, Dillon can smile, look in the mirror and tell himself, “You’re Okay, I love you, Dillon”. He accepted who he used to be and who he is now. He has earned back most of what he lost. Dillon found his purpose and every day, with his faith in a Higher Power, he works to achieve his dreams and goals.

Embolden people who struggle with addictions to recover and inspire others to pay it forward. Dillon strives to help others with addictions. He gives back freely to pay it forward with no expectation of reimbursement. His daily goal is to become a better person. How to Use to Promote Social Change Copyright by Elisha Israel Anyone curious about psychology and personal development has likely heard of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. However, many people aren’t aware that much of Maslow’s later work was focused on what happens to people after their basic needs are met. Maslow researched and theorized that once people’s basic needs are met, they begin a path towards what he calls selfactualization. From studying others, he realized that the people who he respected and viewed as self-actualized shared a common trait. Once they had met their personal needs, they began to dedicate their lives to helping others. In our world, many people need help. Most of us are aware that for every instance of success and privilege, there are many others who are under-resourced and in desperate need of a helping hand. Many people have different paths to advocacy to help others. Whether through the non-profit sector, philanthropy, or policy, we see individuals and institutions doing incredible work to help underprivileged people have a better life. However, I’d like to address the private sector and business communities with this article, because I feel many people have a negative association with the private sector. When starting a business, one of the most foundational lessons is to find a group of people, identify the problem they’re experiencing and provide a solution. This can be applied to many different cases. Some are trivial, selling fidget spinners or unnecessary products for a profit. These can be necessary services such as home repair, consumer products, or even the food we eat.

However, I’d like to highlight that this meth-

80 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE

odology can be leveraged for high-impact solutions that recognize the dire need to provide for marginalized people, the dire need for direct action related to systemic changes, and the relatively slow nature of achieving necessary systemic changes. How? Through the private sector. An example may be ideal here. Let’s identify a problem. A personal favorite is the energy sector. The combination of destructive fossil fuels and horrendous foreign policy to maintain supply chains have led to an increasing need for alternative solutions. These solutions include renewable energy, electric vehicles, oils (and plastics) made from renewable sources, and overall, an immediate shift into a future that’s not reliant on fossil fuels. However, as you may be aware, there is a significant incentive for established industries to lobby for a lack of action with these initiatives. This is where the private sector enters. Companies such as Tesla provide electric vehicles and energy storage for profit while using their influence to guide the consumers towards sustainable choices. We see the same in the renewable sector where solar companies are able to provide sustainable solutions for property owners, reducing their energy expenses while also giving them autonomy and protection from future rate increases. These are examples of leveraging the private sector to drive systemic necessary change. We see the same happening with the increased popularity of companies like BeyondMeat and ImpossibleBurger, driving social behavior for a necessary cause, in this

case reducing the net negative impact on our planet and society that factory farming creates. This is where business becomes interesting, fun, purposeful, and allows for us, as business owners, to combine our vision for a better future with the reality that there’s is much work to be done for that future to exist. One of the side benefits is that many initiatives founded in sustainability are also rooted in inefficiency. This allows for better business practices, improved profit margins, and a society that makes decisions based on the net impact of an initiative, rather than just the amount of money a project can make. As consumers, we have a responsibility to use our buying power to incentivize this shift in the business sector. As business owners, we have a responsibility to offer a mindful commitment to this balance. I’ll end with a challenge. ~ Elisha Israel
