IFFM: We noticed that you are getting a lot of attention on your vocal music, and you are releasing your original music soon? Can you elaborate more about it? DR. SHELLIE: Yes, my single on Spotify and iTunes from the musical Chicago “And All That Jazz” was very well received. I was approached by Hollywood musical producer Romina Arena and she is creating original music for me and a cover that will wow when we get into the music studio in the fall! I have also had the opportunity to perform on stages around the country weaving storytelling and music together for my Keynote speaking.

IFFM: We noticed you have done fashion shows and host them over the years to raise money for charities, can you tell us about it? DR. SHELLIE: I have always loved storytelling. I have found over the years working with many fashion designers and charitable organizations that fashion shows are a way of acting without having to learn lines or memorize lyrics. I love to tell the stories of the clothing through a movement on a runway. One of my favorite runway experiences was a few months ago when I got to wear an incredible black dress from Audrey Hepburn’s personal estate in the Pittsburgh Opera fashion show. It was made all the sweeter because 20 years prior, I was the fashion curator Richard Parsakian’s “Audrey Hepburn” in his show at the Andy Warhol Museum. So, to wear her actual gown in this show was full circle

and amazing.

Celebrating Darla Allgood's birthday has a special place in my heart. Darla Allgood is quite simply a great woman; I speak of the person. It is her inspiration and integrity which is the essential mark of greatness. I have known Darla for over 5 years, our friendship has never been clouded by a single quarrel or misunderstanding, nor has it ever grown stale, it has blossomed. She has always strived to do her best towards any goal to make things happen for our magazine and for her husband and family before putting herself first. My wife is a kind and gentle spirit, beautiful, strong, independent, and is my best friend. We share our ups and downs together and are always there for each other. I am so proud of Darla, she has so many talents and she uses them for God. She has accomplished so much. The things that matter to her most is loving God, her family and friends. She puts God first and says the only thing that matters in life is what you do for God. She is a wonderful mother her family is her top priority, she loves her boys and grandsons, they are her life. Being the mama bear she has done such a tremendous job raising our boys, (many times on her own as I was deployed so often). They all have grown up into men of integrity, loving God, kind and caring. She has met so many wonderful friends over the years through all her women's beauty pageants, speaking engagements, volunteer work and charity events. She receives well over 200 birthday wishes each year and it keeps growing, (who has that many friends? I'm just jealous) she loves them all and keeps in touch with as many as she can. Darla you are a women of noble character. In Proverbs 31 it

says 10.

A wife of noble character who can find she is worth far more then rubies. 25-31. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her; many women do noble things, but you surpasses them all. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a women who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. Darla you are all of these things. You are wonderfully and beautifully made. I am so proud of you and I love you so much. So have a great, fantastic 60th birthday. And remember 60 is the new 40 your beautiful. I love you ~Your hubby.

Fashion is something we deal with everyday. Even people who say

they don’t care what they wear choose clothes every morning that say a lot about them and how they feel that day. One certain thing in the fashion world is change. We are constantly being bombarded with new fashion ideas from music, videos, books, and television. Movies also have a big impact on what people wear. Ray-Ban sold more sunglasses after the movie Men In Black. Sometimes a trend is world-wide. Back in the 1950s, teenagers everywhere dressed like Elvis Presley.

Who dictates fashion? Musicians and other cultural icons have always influenced what we’re wearing, but so have political figures and royalty. Newspa-

pers and magazines report on what Hillary Clinton wears. The recent death of Diana, the Princess of Wales, was a severe blow to the high fashion world, where her clothes were daily news. Even folks in the 1700s pored over fashion magazines to see the latest styles. Women and dressmakers outside the French court relied on sketches to see what was going on. The famous French King Louis XIV said that fashion is a mirror. Louis himself was renowned for his style, which tended towards extravagant laces and velvets.

Clothes separate people into groups. Fashion is revealing. Clothes reveal what groups people are in. In high school, groups have names: “goths, skaters, preps, herbs.” Styles show who you are, but they also create stereotypes and distance between groups. For instance, a businessman might look at a boy with green hair and multiple piercings as a freak and outsider. But to another person, the boy is a strict conformist. He dresses a certain way to deliver the message of rebellion and separation, but within that group, the look is uniform. Acceptance or rejection of a style is a reaction to the society we live in. “A little of what you call frippery is very necessary towards looking like the rest of the world.”-Abigail Adams, letter to John Adams, May 1, 1780 Fashion is a language which tells a story about the person who wears it. “Clothes create a wordless means of communication

Fashion is a state of mind. A spirit, an extension of one’s self. Fashion talks, it can be an understated whisper, a high-energy scream or an all knowing wink and a smile. Most of all fashion is about being comfortable with yourself, translating self-esteem into a personal style.

Why is it important? Fashion is a means of self-expression that allows people to try on many roles in life. Whether you prefer hip-hop or Chanel-chic, fashion accommodates the chameleon in all of us. It’s a way of celebrating the diversi-

fashion magazines are all part of Haute Couture (“High Fashion” in French). Some of these expensive and often artistic fashions may triumph and become the fashion for the larger majority. Most stay on the runway. Popular fashions are close to impossible to trace. No one can tell how the short skirts and boots worn by teenagers in England in 1960 made it to the runways of Paris, or how blue jeans became so popular in the U.S., or how hip-hop made it from the streets of the Bronx to the Haute Couture fashion shows of London and Milan. It’s easy to see what’s popular by watching sit-coms on television: the bare mid-riffs and athletic clothes of 90210, the baggy pants of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. But the direction of fashion relies on “pluggedin” individuals to react to events, and trends in music, art and books. “In the perspective of costume history, it is plain that the dress of any given period is exactly suited to the actual climate of the time.” according to James Laver, a noted English costume historian. How did bellbottom jeans fade into the designer jeans and boots look of the 1980s into the baggy look of the 1990s? Nobody really knows. Once identified, fashions begin to change.

Sleeping well, drinking lots of water and keeping your face natural is a recipe for looking pleasing on camera. Keep your hair well groomed, and if you're men, keep cleanly shaven. When it comes to clothes, something subtle and that blends well with the persona you’re trying to create will be greatly beneficial. Step two in perfecting yourself for the camera is focusing on your message. A tv interview is short and sweet. Remember that not all you say will be used, just pivotal moments. So make sure to deliver the most important message you want to reach your audience. If it’s all important, keep it simple and don’t add any fluff to whats being said. Also, keep your story straight. That is step three. Don’t get lost in trying to personalize the message you want to deliver to your audience. It’s okay to add a few short anecdotes, but remember why you are there, and give the audience the appropriate message. They’ll remember some of what you say, so you want that to be what is important

SUPPORT - ADVOCATE - EDUCATE - UPLIFT - NETWORK -RESPECT Something almost magical happened as the words of these women went viral at EmpoweringWomenRadio.com. Others started taking notice. One such lady from Pakistan wears a veil and lives in a male dominated society. In a land where many women are denied education she has a master’s degree. Many are not allowed to be employed and she works as a women’s rights activist through SAWERA. Although she lives in a part of rural Pakistan where women are barred from making their own decisions, she decided to reach out to the United States-based Empowering Women Radio. Hena Gul listened to Dr. Shellie’s interview with “Empowered Girl—Empowered World” conference leader Haseena Patel in South Africa. It is through Haseena that Dr. Shellie Skypes in to schools to work with Power Circles of teenage girls in South Africa. Hena reached out to Empowering Women Radio and she was introduced to ladies with similar missions. After she bonded with Dr. Shellie and connections were formed with incredible women around the world, Hena created the phrase a “Global Sisterhood” for what we are experiencing through Empowering Women.

For years, The Global Sisterhood has taken need requests from local, national, and international women through our Charity Partnerships and we find ways to support each other. When a need request comes in, and after it is properly vetted through our Executive Board of Directors, if we determine that it’s a problem that needs our help that we can take on, we become like family for The Global Sisterhood. We pull our resources of time, money and, talent and we fundraise through events such as the Empowering Women in Philanthropy Awards. Over a thousand women strong, we make a way to support the needs of our “family” near and far.

There’s no denying that food plays a vital role in our health. What we put into our mouths helps us to fight disease and live a healthful life. However, food can be a double-edged sword because what we put at the end of our fork can also cause disease. We need proper nutrition for our immune system to thrive and for us to function at an optimal level. Deciding what we should and shouldn’t be eating can get very confusing, especially with all the constantly changing opinions and advancements in food science. This was the entire basis behind my award-winning, #1 bestselling book Food Sanity, How to Eat in a World of Fads and Fiction. Many things considered bad for us years ago are now called the “superfoods” of today, and vice versa. here’s my ...“Oops, they got it wrong” list: WWW.FITNESSFASHIONMAGAZINE.COM

Research also shows eating as little as one serving of red meat a day is associated with a 50 percent increased risk of type 2 diabetes, compared with people who eat it less than once a month. The reason for this could be because the high iron content of red meat increases inflammatory chemicals, which may destroy insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.

and liver damage. The reason for this is because the juice of an orange doesn’t contain fiber and it’s easy to consume the juice of multiple oranges at once without feeling full. Eating an orange, on the other hand, does not cause this spike in blood sugar because it contains lots of pulp and fiber. Eat your oranges, don’t drink them.

Cow’s milk also contains an inflammatory protein called casein, which is also used to make glue to hold together wood. The first part of the book discusses the various background influences on our health, such as the environment we grew up in, our perspectives, the relationship between the body and the mind, energy, the human brain and stress. The second part of the book goes in-depth into Michael's Six Pillars of a healthy lifestyle - movement, nutrition, breathing, hydration, sleep and mindfulness. The last part of the book we 'bring it all together' and reveal the common theme thread through every word in this book and help you understand how to use all this new found knowledge and apply it in a very simple, sustainable, practical and life changing program.

For over 15 years Michael Abdallah has devoted himself to researching and developing a comprehensive life changing program, and adeptly brings together all of the wisdom and the knowledge he has gained over the years into this wonderfully simple to understand book that should be a great help to anyone who is interested in their physical, mental and emotional health. MICHAEL'S SIX PILLARS SUMMARY Movement: We were created and designed to move. We are opportunistic movers, streamlined and designed for multi-joint, multiplane, dynamic movement against the force of gravity over distance. We are a system of integrated systems that only operate best in the presence of movement. Nutrition: The oversimplified 'calories in vs calories out' theory has been glamorised without any real biochemistry taken into consideration or no real knowledge of what's happening intrinsically. For example, 1) how different foods are used up in the body, 2) what metabolic advance you could have and 3) the effect they have on the body. Breathing: 3 seconds without oxygen and our cells will die, all of our biological systems are dependent on oxygen to function, although the benefits to breathing are far more comprehensive than just staying alive. This chapter will open you up to a brand-new way of appreciating better breathing. Hydration:

Water, referred to as the messenger of God by world renowned scientists. If you regulate your water in- take and work on prioritizing it during your day, you can contribute to improving your weight loss while also investing in your overall health wellbeing. Sleep: Besides its myriad health benefits, sleep is an integral factor in losing weight and feeling good. Focus on the natural sleep wave patterns that occur between 10 PM and 6 AM. During that time, our bodies go through neurogenic and hormonal repair cycles, which are imperative for growth and tissue repair. Mindfulness: The chapter outlines how significant you become in being able to control the outcomes in your life when you can connect with yourself and the world around you by being in the moment.

N THE CONTEXT OF INCREASING POLARIZED OPINIONS ABOUT medicine, expertise, and what those things mean, I thought I’d share one of the rather amazing

stories of a hero of modern medicine.

Ignaz Semmelweis, MD,

practiced as a gynecological surgeon in Vienna in the mid 19th Century. He’s now referred to as “the savior of mothers.” But what about how he gained this honorific? He is one of the early practitioners who designed a prospective study design where he measured results directly, something rare in

his day. Ignas observed that on some units the mortality rates for new mothers of “puerperal” infections reached 30%. Some versions of history noted that nurse midwife units had lower mortality rates due to handwashing. Other versions of history noted that the worst mortality rates were on units where medical students came directly from cadaver labs without washing their hands. Other descriptions noted that the prestige of the individual surgeon of the that day related to how dirty his surgical gown was. The ethos of the surgeons had not included handwashing because no one could “see” germs. Whichever version is more accurate, Ignaz had a realization that perhaps washing hands between births and exams might reduce

infection rates. He developed a simple solution for handwashing that ended up being anti-bacterial, and showed that by washing © by Gregory P Brown

Interestingly, in certain areas of Europe, doctors began to follow his practice. But in Vienna, local fellow professionals found his ideas laughable because no one could see the bacteria [we can’t see it so it isn’t real]. His own abrasive personality didn’t help in his acceptance

to be so obsessed with this, and had him committed to a mental asylum in 1865, where he died 14 days later due to injuries from being beaten by guards when he tried to escape. Only after Louis Pasteur later developed the germ theory of disease was there a theoretical understanding of how Semmelweis’ work could be

Today, the foundation of handwashing remains not only the key to reducing infections after surgery, but also the foundation to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and other viruses in the community. So much could be said about this historical set of events. We tend to think these areas of blindness to data must be centuries old; but, alas the same phases of data blindness persist into the current day. It’s not limited to medicine, either, as the challenges of physics moving from a Newtonian worldview to an Einsteinian worldview, but that’s a different story.

er, more whole and powerful worldview. It’s easy to ridicule the doctors who rejected Ignza’s findings. But consider what new concepts or ways of thinking that we may have rejected outright as seemingly false that might be a next step of self discovery. On an individual level we fall prey to the distortion related to “perception is projection.” What we see “out there” in a huge way is related to what our own filters “in there” allow us to actually see. Out of the nearly infinite stimuli out there, we select those things that match our own worldview, which prevents all of us from seeing data that doesn’t match. This prevents personal overwhelm,

the data “objectively.” Just suspend disbelief. But when the professional community believes in a particular version of “reality” it is quite easy to completely dismiss contrary data. This remains a challenge of peer reviewed journals today, because the “peers” all perceive innovation or newness as a violation of the status quo, which they believe they have to defend [because it is all they can “see”]. Some new ideas will be found to be false and drop away, but just data and study will allow that to happen. Other new ideas could be truly paradigm changing once accepted. How many innovations that could save misery or save lives have been lost to the tyranny of the “status quo?” We can never know because they were ignored or actively suppressed. Whatever became of the electric car from the

1970s?

The stuck areas of life, whether fears over life events, noticing problems that just won’t change, observing serial relationship problems. . . . they need a larger worldview, new data, new ideas. What are you willing to try to see that you can’t yet see; hear what you can’t yet hear; feel what you can’t yet feel? Stepping a bit outside of personal comfort zones of perception? Is there some data out there that doesn’t support ongoing fear? Do we choose to look at the fear based data for COVID-19 [or anything else] because it is matching our current worldview, or perhaps choose to seek more hopeful data to confront those fear based perceptions. It is out there! Choose what you choose to see carefully: it will begin to define what you’re able to see. ~ Dr Greg Brown

Inflammatory bowel disease is one of the most debilitating disorders my patients suffer from. Symptoms of this chronic condition include abdominal pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, unwanted weight loss, and severe fatigue. Unfortunately, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) appears to be a growing problem. Research presented at United European Gastroenterology Week revealed that there could be three times as many people living with IBD than previously thought.1 Although almost 7 million people suffer from IBD globally, the disease remains steeped in mystery. For as long as I can remember, identifying the actual cause of IBD has left scientists completely stumped.

However, thanks to a new study, this could be about to change. In a small-scale study, a team of researchers found that individuals with IBD had larger amounts of microplastics in their stool. The results were published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.2 Now, I don’t need to tell you that plastic is just about everywhere. But the presence of microplastics is even more widespread than you might think. As the name implies, microplastics are extremely small pieces of plastic. Some are so small that we can’t see them without a microscope. They’re usually made by larger pieces of plastic that break apart over time – sometimes to the point where they almost look like dust. Scientists estimate that the average American consumes enough microplastics to put a credit card together every single week. That amounts to 74,000 particles of microplastic a year. 3 PREVENT IBS BY AVOIDING MICROBEADS While it’s impossible to remove microplastics from the environment – after all, they are everywhere – there are things you can do to reduce your exposure. Here are a couple of tricks I share with my patients.

1.

2.

Use a laundry filter: Nearly 65% of today’s clothing contain plastics like polyester, nylon, acrylic, and polyamide. In fact, these fabrics are one of the biggest sources of microplastic pollution on the planet. A single load of laundry can release a million microplastic fibers into the environment.

But you can install a washing machine filter that dramatically reduces a large portion of these from getting into your system. In one study, filters were able to eliminate almost 80% of plastics.5Alternatively, you can also wash your clothes on a lower setting, wash by hand, or invest in clothing made with less synthetic material. 3.

Use fewer disposable products: Single-use products such as plastic cups, plasticware, and even straws and takeout containers all contribute to microplastic buildup. By using less – or even none of these – you can drastically reduce your exposure.Simple ways to start include buying a steel reusable water bottle, using tote bags instead of single-use grocery bags, and shopping locally instead of having items delivered.

4.

Use fewer products with microbeads: Most brands of toothpaste, facial scrubs, and other cosmetic products contain trace amounts of microplastics – which build up over time. These beads can easily pass through filtration systems and enter our rivers, lakes, and oceans. From there, they get into everything else we eat, drink, or use. To avoid microbeads, check product ingredient lists. Avoid polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and nylon. Instead choose natural, biodegradable ingredients, like grains, ground nut shells, and salt and sugar crystals.

Everyone wants to enjoy their summertime activities, but it’s important to temper that desire for fun with an interest in remaining safe, particularly when it comes to activities like boating or swimming. The following safety tips can ensure that you and your family enjoy a happy and safe time in the water. It is estimated that an average of ten people die every day from water-related accidents. This makes it fairly obvious that more care and attention are needed when planning or engaging in water-related activities. First, we will cover what issues might arise during water-related activities, and how to combat these issues. The most obvious of these issues would be the inability to swim. Many people are unable to swim, or unable to swim strongly. The easiest way to combat this is also quite obvious, as there are any numbers of businesses and organizations which can teach you, such as your local YMCA or YWCA. On a related note, whether or not someone is a strong swimmer, accidents can happen at any time. For this reason, it is vitally important to never joke about drowning, act like you can’t swim if you can, or anything of the like. These actions can take away from a lifeguard’s ability to help people actually in need.

can help save lives during an emergency. There are other factors involved in water safety as well, which change depending on the specific situation. For instance, if you have a private pool, it’s essential that you have security fencing surrounding the area so that unattended children or pets do not accidentally drown themselves. When swimming or engaging in other water-related activities in locations beyond the backyard pool, it’s important to check the availability of lifeguards, the location of the nearest First Aid Station, and other concerns. For swimming or other activities in the ocean or other large bodies of water, make sure you swim in well-lit, populated areas, with a preference for areas that also have lifeguards in attendance. Just following these simple safety tips can ensure you have a fun and also a safe time in and around the water! Melissa Hull runs two global media companies, Globex Media

Why Biohacking? Biohacking is more than just reading mindless self-improvement tips. It is understanding the why behind how you’re feeling, thinking, and performing. At LifeVantage, we live for finding the “why” through relentless research, experimentation, and technology. Biohackers are individuals who believe in experience-based knowledge. There is always something tangible that’s affecting your daily ability to be awesome. Instead of simply accepting aches, ailments, and exhaustion as part of growing old, start to question those setbacks. With the “biohacker mindset,” you’re not eschewing traditional medicine, you’re just figuring out what works best for you. You’re actively seeking out a healthier lifestyle. And for that, your future self will thank you. With all this in mind, the real question you should be asking is…why not biohack?
