Chef Serge Krikorian and his wife, Mary, started their catering business in 2002. Having catered thousands of events over the years as Dinner’s Ready, they launched Vibrant Occasions Catering, a new name that more accurately depicts the level of food and service provided at weddings and social events. As we approach the holidays, Vibrant Occasions Catering will bring Southern hospitality to family gatherings and corporate events. Chef Serge Krikorian with the penchant for developing unique recipes, especially sauces, offers a delectable Cuban Mojo, a citrus-marinated pork butt that is braised until fork-tender and served with a mojo sauce (similar to the pork in the sandwiches Jon Favreau made out of a food truck in the movie, Chef), Smokey Mushroom Chicken, Marinated, roasted chicken breast topped with sauteed mushrooms, smoked provolone cheese, and applewood-smoked bacon crumble, Shrimp and Grits: Blackened wild-caught gulf shrimp and spicy browned butter corn relish over cheesy stone-ground grits. Pork Shanks: Merlotbraised pork shank served with roasted garlic Yukon Gold mashed potatoes, maple-glazed heirloom carrots, roasted broccoli and a salad with toasted crostini to name a few. Chef Serge Krikorian hails from the quaint town of Benton, Arkansas His southern hospitality paired with his penchant for developing unique recipes, especially sauces, has garnered his reputation as foodies’ fan favorite in his community and now on the Youtube space, “Cooking with the Kriks.”

Jules: Your elegant cuisine can be seen at weddings and special events. Can you share a few memorable occasions? Serge: I keep saying that I am going to write a book about all of the things that I have seen, heard, and had to do at weddings, but honestly, I don’t think anyone would believe half of it. There was the time that we were at an outdoor wedding, and during the ceremony, the power went off. None of the wedding party was aware because they were outside. I had my wife bring my personal generator, and we hooked it up and were able to get lights in the venue, music from the DJ, and power for the catering. No one but us, the DJ, and the venue owners knew what was going on until the bridal party was leaving and the power came back on. They thought it was just romantic lighting. Our goal at any event is to make sure that if something goes wrong, and

inevitably something will eventually go wrong, that no one is negatively impacted by it. We work with the other vendors, and they work with us to make sure that if any of us has an issue, we pull together to make sure that we resolve it before it affects our clients. Jules: “Cooking with the Kriks” is cooking up southern hospitality. How did this all start for you? Serge: Cooking with the Kriks started when my middle son, Brian (who never met a camera he didn’t love), and I decided to do a cooking demonstration and put it on YouTube. Brian has a passion for making pizzas and intends to reopen our carryout and delivery pizza business with his updated take on our pizzas. The reaction we received to that first episode was so positive that we started bringing in local celebrities and asking them what dishes they would like to learn how to

make and then teaching them how to make them. Things that I take for granted that everyone should know how to do, like slicing a bell pepper, are not necessarily things the general public knows, and they love to learn new cooking skills. What Your APPEARANCE Says About Your DIET

Dr. David Friedman

AUTHOR, SPEAKER, RADIO/TV HEALTH EXPERT

overdoing caffeine can accelerate wrinkle formation. While that morning Joe may

give you more energy to jump-start your day, it is also a diuretic that can dehydrate the skin during the day. Skin that lacks adequate hydration doesn’t retain the plump, luminous look of young, healthy skin. This dehydration process can also exaggerate fine lines and wrinkles, making you look older. But don’t despair! You can enjoy the energizing benefits of coffee without the effects of dehydration simply by drinking plenty of water beBy Dr. David Friedman

I believe the popular statement “You are what you eat” should be changed to “You age how you eat.” It’s well documented how dietary choices can help in the prevention of conditions like obesity, arthritis, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even cancer. While it’s not always possible to see the negative effects taking place inside the body, your exterior appearance can be a great indicator if you need to alter your diet.

Below are some telltale signs of how your diet may be affecting your appearance and accelerating the aging process: SAGGING SKIN If the reflection in the mirror isn’t revealing healthy, glowing skin, this is a good indicator that your collagen and elastin levels are being compromised. You should cut back on simple carbohydrates like white pasta, white bread, baked goods,

and popcorn. These foods are quickly converted to glucose in the body which can be inflammatory and destructive to

Oxidative stress caused by free radicals can damage the DNA and cells of your skin. This contributes to prematurely aging skin due to the destruction of collagen and elastin. Eating foods that are rich in antioxidants can help to neutralize the ravaging effects of oxidative stress. The good news is the epidermis, or surface layer of the skin, is renewed every twenty days. When these cells of your skin die and get replaced by nourishing healthful food, your appearance can drastically improve. Even if your diet has been aging you, you get a doover!

Also, avoid adding cream and sugar to your coffee, as both dairy and sugar have adverse effects on your skin as well.

youthful. In addition, alcohol can adversely affect your vitamin A levels. This is a

very important antioxidant for your skin/ body and it is vital in the regeneration of new cells. Always drink in moderation. The more alcohol you consume, the faster the sands of time will fall.

PREMATURE WRINKLES

When it comes to staying hydrated, the rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces per day. So, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should consume 75 ounces of water each day.

can create a “browning” reaction of our epidermis. Skin is composed of collagen and elastin, which makes our skin supple and soft. Sugar causes collagen crosslinking which results in accelerated aging of the skin. The more sugar we consume, the more prone we are to developing dark spots on our skin. Another reason sugar is so ravaging to the skin is it shortens our telomere length (the strand at the end of our DNA.) Every time our DNA duplicates, our telomeres short-

en. While our bodies normally replace those telomeres, sugar quickens that shortening, and thereby, advances the aging process. Cut back on those sweet indulgent foods.

LINES BETWEEN EYEBROWS (“ELEVENS”) The space between the eyebrows can wrinkle, which is often referred to as “elevens.” This area corresponds with the liver, which plays a profound role in detoxification. Cut back on your alcohol consumption. Each time your liver filters alcohol, some of your liver cells die. The good news is the liver can develop new cells; however,

prolonged alcohol misuse

(drinking too much) can reduce its ability to regenerate. One alcohol, in particular, to avoid if you want to reduce those “elevens” is tequila made from agave. Agave syrup comes from the agave plant, a succulent that is native to dry regions in Mexico. It is extremely high in fructose (up to 97%!) Agave can contain more fructose

than high fructose corn syrup, another major ager when it comes to collagen destruction.

Some studies suggest that

agave syrup is ten times more inflammatory than high fructose corn syrup (HFCS.)

After becoming frustrated with so much biased (often paid for) and conflicting research, Dr. Friedman created a common science meets common sense approach that finally puts an end to the culinary conundrum!

1.

Change your diet: Today, almost everyone on the planet is inflamed, thanks to a modern diet packed with inflammatory ingredients like refined sugar, grains, and cheap vegetable oils.I recom-

mend that my patients limit carbs to 5% to 10% of daily calories. The easiest way to start is by avoiding all processed foods. Also avoid grains, rice, pasta, beans and legumes, and starchy vegetables.Fats should make up the bulk of your calories. But they have to be the right kinds of fat. Strictly avoid trans fats and vegetable oils like

What is BioHacking? Biohackers are individuals who believe in experiencebased knowledge. Their mindset is, “Show me the research and then let me try it for myself.”

B

Iohacking is taking full control of your biology. If you’ve pursued ways to improve your health, that’s biohacking. But, it’s more than just putting butter in your coffee every morning or taking a daily vitamin. Biohacking is the desire to understand the body and mind you’ve been given and using everything at your disposal — cutting-edge technology, tools, and science — to become the best version of yourself.

Why Biohacking? Biohacking is more than just reading mindless self-improvement tips. It is understanding the why behind how you’re feeling, thinking, and performing. Knowing the “why” empowers you to not only biohack your body, but to make impactful changes to your overall health and well-being. At LifeVantage, we live for finding the “why” through relentless research, experimentation, and technology. Biohackers are individuals who believe in experience-based knowledge. Their mindset is, “Show me the research and then let me try it for myself.” Learn to pay attention to how you’re feeling. There is always something tangible that’s affecting your daily ability to be awesome. Instead of simply accepting aches, ailments, and exhaustion as part of growing old, start to question those setbacks. With the “biohacker mindset,” you’re not eschewing traditional medicine, you’re just figuring out what works best for you. You’re actively seeking out a healthier lifestyle. And for that, your future self will thank you. With all this in mind, the real question you should be asking is…why not biohack?

that Vinnie embodied that in his life. He began to play football at 5

years old. I was always proud to hear the coach mention Vinnie's hard work on the team. I realized though that people work hard and don't always win. I wanted to show Vinnie and my students that hard work is worth it. I started joining in pageants to show my kids that dreams are attainable if you just don't give up. Going from sneakers to putting on heels to walk the runway was no joke. My spirit had perseverance but lacked grace. With each pageant, I got a little better and my confidence grew. I got married and had my next child, I have been a mom for twenty-five and a half years. My journey began when I was 21 when I had my first son, Vinnie, on November 12, 1995. When I was three months pregnant, his dad left me. He wanted me to give Vinnie up for adoption and said it was unfair to a child to only have a

mom. Although I went through labor and delivery without his dad, I learned quickly that being a single mom was still amazing. My mom was there for me too and taught me to persevere. Vinnie was the greatest treasure that I could have ever imagined. He was a gift from God. I was attending school at Ithaca College to become a Health, Physical Education Teacher, and a Coach. Alone with Vinnie, I knew I needed to continue my education so that I could support my son. I graduated and got a job teaching and coaching. I enjoyed my job so much. Not just sharing life with Vinnie, but with my students. I empowered them to know they are a masterpiece and to give 100% to their life in every way. One famous NFL coach, Vince Lombardi inspired both Vinnie and I with his drive to persevere. He believed in heart power. He said, "the quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence." I was very happy

Emily on December 2, 2000. She was wonderful. She was another treasure for me. My husband was an alcoholic and the drinking got bad. I continued in pageants and working hard to show my kids that life is great. On September 4, 2005, I had my third child, Alli. She was

my next little miracle and just amazing! I love being a mom! Emily and Alli wanted to dance. It was my childhood dream to be a dancer. With the girls, I began dancing again. It was so much fun! My husband continued drinking and made our life very hard. I had to make the decision to protect my kids and divorce. I wanted my kids to know that life can be hard but to keep persevering. The kids understood to keep running the race of life and God will hold us up. They were brave. I taught them no matter what family is important and your character does matter even when no one is looking. I married again a man named Elliot. We had another child, Gabriella, born on July 24, 2009. She was terrific and yet another treasure from God. Being a mom makes me whole and gives me a purpose to, "train my children in the way they should go." (Proverbs 22:6). We have always

had fun. The girls started doing pageants, modeling, and dancing with me. Vinnie was always supportive and watched when he wasn't playing sports or riding horses. In May 2014, I was assaulted by a student while teaching. A student threw a rock at the back of my head and I suffered a trau-

matic brain injury and I was unable to teach. It was hard on my kids and they gave me 100% of their love. In June 2015, I realized that I had cancer but I didn't go to the doctors because I wasn't sure how to tell my kids after going through a brain injury. In August 2015, Emily and I went to Connecticut to participate in the Petite America Pageant. Director, Kimberly and Queen Carol opened the pageant with a message from their heart about breast cancer and the need to do self breast exams as they both had cancer and recovered. As I sat there, I realized that small pea size lump in my right breast was exactly what they were talking about. God brought me all the way to this pageant to tell me go to the doctor because your kids need you. Kimberly made sure I saw the doctor and wasn't afraid. So, after the pageant, I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer and BRCA 2. It was aggressive and spread to my lymph nodes. My family and I planned my recovery party for April 24, 2016. I began treatment with chemo and a double mastectomy. I received a call on March 21, 2016 to tell us the good news that I was cured from

cancer. Praise God! We had our recovery party. That pageant gave me the courage to know I had to be me and my kids got to have courage along side of me. I lost my hair and my breasts. I realized that I was still me. I didn't need a wig to be a mom. With Kimberly's encouragement, I was able to put my crown on with no hair on my head and spoke to many different groups about getting checkups, hope, and love. I believe that " hope is an anchor for the soul" (Hebrews 6:19). God's love for us is greater than we can ever imagine- even greater than our own love for our kids which is a lot. After recovery, we still, participate in pageants, fashion shows, and dancing. I love to share our story like Kimberly and Carol shared with me. Being in pageants and fashion shows gives me a voice to help share hope with people. Through our journey, my eyes were opened to the many truths about my kids being so proud of me and loving me no matter what. What I started to encourage in them has grown to a love for people and themselves. I'm thankful that they invite people into our lives and I love watching our family grow. We have so many people who care about us and that we care about from participating in these activities. No matter what happens, I am a mom to Vinnie, Emily, Alli, and Gabriella. As they grow, I am so excited to see their adventures and where life takes them. Being a mom is the very best thing I could ever hope to be. My kids teach me too. Moms do matter. Kids need their moms and moms need their kids. This journey that God has planned for me is my purpose. I am thankful to be a mom. Being a mom is the very best thing I could ever hope to be.

an Inspirational Cuban Model and Fitness Instructor

Yessenia Martinez is a Cuban model currently residing in Miami. She has been a fitness instructor for 7 years and recently became a personal trainer. In 2020, she competed in her first modeling competition, “Miss Fashion Global” and placed top 5 in the fitness category. It was there that she met Victoria Henley of “America’s Next Top Model “and was invited to walk her first fashion runway show. Since then, she continues to work with new models, designers, and photographers as she

expands her resume. In between shows, she is committed to her own health and fitness goals. It is her idea that, “all that we want, we can achieve, as long as we live each day as if it is already ours.” Fitness and fashion have always been her passion and are evident as part of her everyday life. IFFM :What inspired you to become a fitness instructor? Yessenia: I was first inspired by amazing instructors that I met when I began going to the gym as a teenager, when I first became pregnant, and after becoming a mother. The role they played in my life inspired me to do the same for others. IFFM: How did you get into modeling? Was it something you always wanted to do? Yessenia: I was first introduced to modeling as a child, but I never felt confident about pursuing it as I struggled with body image. I also believed modeling was only for a specific body type that I did not fit.

In 2020, I was teaching a lot of fitness classes and wanted to compete in a competi-

tion. I signed up for Miss Fashion Global in the fitness category with no expectations. It was here that I was reintroduced and drawn into the modeling industry. I met Victoria Henley at the competition, and she invited me to walk in a fashion show. Since then, it’s become a new passion. 3.What did it feel like walking in a Fashion Runway Show? It felt nerve wracking at first. After the first few walks on the runway, the fear disappeared, and it became fun and exciting. It

feels like a performance, and it’s a moment to be whoever you want to be in the outfit you are showcasing. The best part is being able to be inventive with your poses and facial expressions. 4. Any fitness tips you can share with our readers? Set small, realistic goals. Stay consistent and create a routine that works for you. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else because everyone has different body goals, capabilities, and limitations. Never skip abs or miss leg day. Lastly, change your mindset to see exercise as therapeutic rather than a chore. 5. What are your 2022 goals? My 2022 goals are developing my modeling experience and wellness company, Wellyess. I’m launching a fitness-wear line, Fityess, and I’m praying to see it on the runway this year. 6. How important do you think nutrition is to achieving your fitness goals? It’s a hard truth, but without consideration of nutrition, fitness goals are hard to reach. Nutrition is 70-80 percent of meeting these goals. The important part is making nutritional adjustments that are tolerable and evidence based. Truly understanding why certain foods need to be included or excluded in relation to our health and goals is what makes the challenge of nutrition easier to overcome.

The first part of the book discusses the various background influences on our health, such as the environment we grew up in, our perspectives, the relationship between the body and the mind, energy, the human brain and stress. The second part of the book goes in-depth into Michael's Six Pillars of a healthy lifestyle - movement, nutrition, breathing, hydration, sleep and mindfulness. The last part of the book we 'bring it all together' and reveal the common theme thread through every word in this book and help you understand how to use all this new found knowledge and apply it in a very simple, sustainable, practical and life changing program.

For over 15 years Michael Abdallah has devoted himself to researching and developing a comprehensive life changing program, and adeptly brings together all of the wisdom and the knowledge he has gained over the years into this wonderfully simple to understand book that should be a great help to anyone who is interested in their physical, mental and emotional health. MICHAEL'S SIX PILLARS SUMMARY Movement: We were created and designed to move. We are opportunistic movers, streamlined and designed for multi-joint, multiplane, dynamic movement against the force of gravity over distance. We are a system of integrated systems that only operate best in the presence of movement. Nutrition: The oversimplified 'calories in vs calories out' theory has been glamorised without any real biochemistry taken into consideration or no real knowledge of what's happening intrinsically. For example, 1) how different foods are used up in the body, 2) what metabolic advance you could have and 3) the effect they have on the body. Breathing: 3 seconds without oxygen and our cells will die, all of our biological systems are dependent on oxygen to function, although the benefits to breathing are far more comprehensive than just staying alive. This chapter will open you up to a brand-new way of appreciating better breathing. Hydration:

Water, referred to as the messenger of God by world renowned scientists. If you regulate your water in- take and work on prioritizing it during your day, you can contribute to improving your weight loss while also investing in your overall health wellbeing. Sleep: Besides its myriad health benefits, sleep is an integral factor in losing weight and feeling good. Focus on the natural sleep wave patterns that occur between 10 PM and 6 AM. During that time, our bodies go through neurogenic and hormonal repair cycles, which are imperative for growth and tissue repair. Mindfulness: The chapter outlines how significant you become in being able to control the outcomes in your life when you can connect with yourself and the world around you by being in the moment.
