Publisher/Editor’s Letter As September is Leukemia, Lymphoma, myeloma, and childhood cancer awareness month that has been shared by many. I had the pleasure meeting Frank Shankwitz “The Wish Man”, who is our featured cover story a couple of years ago before he had retired from his “Make A Wish Foundation” when I was working for a fashion magazine, granting wishes for those who wanted to become a model. I later reconnected with Frank a couple of years after, then stayed in regular touch since then.

Frank is one of the top 10 most influential person to know, in fact he is number one on our list, as he and fellow officers from the Arizona Highway Patrol selflessly helped Chris Greicius, a 7-year old boy suffering from terminal leukemia, to receive his ‘wish' to become a Highway Patrol Motorcycle Officer like his heroes, 'Ponch and Jon’, from the popular television show, 'CHiPs'. Reflecting on how he had helped Chris happiness becoming a Highway Patrol Motorcycle Officer before he passed, he knew there was a need to grant more children “wishes “and created the non-profit organization “Make A Wish Foundation” to grant more wishes solely to raise enough money to grant more wishes. Recently, I had an opportunity to go to dinner with him and my fiancé, as we got seated I kept staring at the ceiling, unknown reason why, until Frank told me the story when he was young there was a gunfight in the restaurant/saloon and those are the bullet holes in the ceiling. I was so surprised, after all these times I never looked up and seeing all those bullets holes made me realized there was history there, and I could not help myself staring at all the appliances on the wall, window, and a mannequin at the top of the stairs where a room used to be. My mind flashed with all the memories (in a trance-like) of the past history of different varieties of people, especially I stared at the shovel for a while seeing the history of the person using it, while Frank talked to my fiancé about the history of the saloon and his journey from being dead for 4 mins to being brought back to life, how the doctors told him that “God spared him for a

reason” to create the foundation, and how he worked with the foundation while keeping his job was tough, however, he persisted and stayed with the foundation for over 30 years and refuses to make profit or salary for himself. I could see his mission was to help improve humanity by never giving up on what he believed in making an enduring impact on people lives around the world by inspiring others to contribute as well. Now Shankwitz is a published author of and a producer of his own movie “The Wishman” sharing his story. He definitely is one of the Influential People as he utilized his selfless drive, humble character, and steadfast grip on his goals to pursue his passion of making the world a better place and he has a great influence on others. INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE Magazine

W elcome to the world of influential people. From social media, business, health/fitness to

transformational leaders like self-help gurus, educators, authors, speakers, artists, coaches, trainers, and mentors all are heroes too often invisible heroes. All are visionaries coming forward to bring a message of hope and possibilities and developing a platform for creativity and excellence. Our definition of an influential person is someone who chooses to impact those around them for the better, someone who encourages people to think beyond their own life so that they will aspire to inspire others. Influence is not enforced but gently led by personal example and. education. While big media would convince us that the world’s influencers are all on the ‘main’ stage we at Influential People Magazine disagree. Yes, we may read a book or see someone in a news report, but those people are too distant from our own sphere to make them relatable. We know, it is those in our communities who truly influence us, who teach us and inspire us, not by one deed but by how we see them live. The team at Influential People believes passionately in spreading that message and understands the need to provide exposure for people on a local level. We work hard to provide a forum for coaches, mentors, authors, writers, trainers, speakers, business owners, entrepreneurs, photographers, event producers, health & wellness practitioners, teachers, icons, heroes. We consider these people to be leaders whose voice and a story has still to be told to the world. Influential People Magazine is known as a place for emerging Influencers. THE STORY OF

FRANK SHANKWITZ

SPEAKER, CO FOUNDER OF MAKE A WISH FOUNDATON, PRODUCER By Stephanie Rathje-Kinney (Manager of Frank Shankwitz)

Frank Shankwitz. You probably never heard his name, but you may have heard of the non-profit he created and co-founded over 38 years ago. The Make-A-Wish Foundation was founded in 1980 and is an extraordinary charity that grants the wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. From humble beginnings, the Make-AWish Foundation is now a global organization. During the 1970's, Shankwitz was assigned to an Arizona Highway Patrol 10man motorcycle tactical unit, that worked the entire state of Arizona. In 1978, Shankwitz was involved in a highspeed pursuit with an impaired driver, when another impaired driver pulled in front of him and he struck the vehicle at 80 mph. He was pronounced dead at the scene when fellow officers could not revive him. An off-duty emergency nurse stopped at the scene and intervened. Four minutes later, she had his heart beating. After a three-month recovery, one of Shankwitz doctors told him, "God spared for a reason, and you need to find that reason." Two years later, Shankwitz found the reason. In April 1980, Shankwitz and fellow officers from the Arizona Highway Patrol helped Chris, a 7-year old boy suffering from terminal leukemia, realize his 'wish' of becoming a Highway Patrol Motorcycle Officer like his heroes, 'Ponch and Jon’, from the popular television show, 'CHiPs'. Chris was picked up at his hospital in a Highway Patrol helicopter and flown to the patrol headquarters, where Shankwitz was asked to stand-by with his motorcycle, so Chris could meet a motorcycle officer when the helicopter landed. Chris spent the day at the Highway Patrol headquarters, where he was made an honorary Arizona Highway Patrol Motorcycle Officer, complete with a custommade uniform, badge, and motor officer wings. Chris died a few days later, and when the commander of the Arizona Highway Patrol learned Chris was going to be buried in Illinois, he asked Shankwitz and fellow Motor Officer Scott Stahl to attend the funeral and bury Chris with full police honors. Word of their mission was forwarded

10 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE

to police agencies in Illinois. Shankwitz and Stahl were joined by officers from the Illinois State Police, plus city and county police for the funeral procession. Chris was buried in his Arizona Highway Patrol uniform, his grave marker reads, "Chris Greicius-Arizona Trooper". On the flight home to Arizona, Shankwitz started thinking about how happy Chris had been when his 'wish' came true, with the energy and happiness of a typical 7-year old. 'He forgot he was ill', was one of the many thoughts Shankwitz had during the flight home, and the idea was born to create a non-profit foundation that would let children with life-threatening medical conditions just 'make-a-wish', and the foundation would make it happen, with Chris being the inspiration to create the foundation. It took Shankwitz and fellow cofounders six months to obtain the new foundations 501(c)3 non-profit status. In November 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation became official, with Shankwitz being the first President/CEO. The first official wish was granted in March 1981, to another 7-year old boy with leukemia, whose wish was to go to Disneyland. That wish led to the folks at Disney becoming one of the biggest sponsors of the foundation. Now, almost 38 years later, the foundation has grown to include 63 chapters in the United States and 36 international chapters on five continents, with over 450,000 wishes granted. All because of a 7-year old boy whose 'wish' was to become a highway patrol motorcycle officer. Back in February of 2018, Frank’s manager, Stephanie Rathje-Kinney had booked a speaking event scheduled for Frank, in Clinton, Iowa, where Stephanie currently resides. Much to Frank’s surprise, Stephanie had gone in November (Veteran’s Day) prior to Frank’s visit and located the burial of Chris in Kewanee, Illinois. Stephanie had a TV interview set up upon Shankwitz arrival, but not before she drove him to revisit the burial of Chris, where the MAW idea was born. Finally, after 38 years, Frank was able to go back and salute the little boy that changed so many lives. An unforgettable moment, once again.

Humbled in receiving the numerous awards, Shankwitz biggest reward is meeting former 'wish' children at his speaking engagements, who are now adults. Through the grace of God and modern medicine, they have survived their life-threatening illness, and he enjoys watching their eyes as they tell their stories and relive the excitement of their wish experience. Shankwitz life story will soon be featured in an upcoming motion picture, "Wish Man", which completed filming in October 2017. The idea for Wish Man began in 2013 when Producer Greg Reid and Director Theo Davies approached Frank with the idea of making a feature film about his life. The next four years Shankwitz assisted with the screenplay and scouting for filming locations in northern Arizona. In terms of lighting and cinematography, Director Davies wanted to have a warm and nostalgic look similar to the movies No Country for Old Men and Hell or High Water, using natural light as the main source. He succeeded in showing the beauty of Frank’s hometown and its beautiful surroundings exactly as they are. Frank admitted he found it somewhat surreal watching the actors portray him and the painful incidents in his life. The emotions caused some tears when a scene brought back some pleasant, and not so pleasant memories. The film stars Australian actor Andrew William Steel as Frank Shankwitz. For over a year, Andrew worked with Frank learning his personality and speech patterns, worked with a dialect coach to lose his 'Aussie' accent, took motorcycle riding and safety courses, and did additional training with a retired California Highway Patrol Motorcycle Officer. He also attended weapons training courses in preparation for his role. Co-stars include Robert Pine, the veteran actor who played Motor Sgt. Joseph Getraer in the TV series, 'CHiPs'. The Producers reached out to him when Shankwitz asked who was better to play the motor sergeant in Wish Man. Robert brought his years of experience and professionalism to the production, setting the bar for the younger actors. Frank also asked producers to reach out to Larry Wilcox, also from 'CHiPs', to play a scene with his former "sergeant", Robert Pine. Frank said, “It was fun watching the two reunite on the set and see them work together again”. The rest of the cast included Bruce Davison, Tom Sizemore, Dale Dickey, Frank Whaley, Pat O'Brien, Steven Michael Quezada, and Danny Trejo. The newer generation of actors included Kirby Bliss Blanton, Julian Curtis, Chris Day and Christian Ganiere. Frank was also the Consulting Producer and Technical Advisor, his days started at 7:00 am, reviewing the day's filming scenes with the director and script supervisor, and then approving the set, costumes, and make-up. Shankwitz really enjoyed working with the set designers, wardrobe, and make-up artist. Also, Frank later found out that the script supervisor, Kennedy Del Toro, was a 'Wish Child', receiving her wish when she was 14 years old. Such pure bliss and emotional for the both of them. ~ Stephanie Rathje-Kinney

The Long-Term Objective is your ultimate position to achieve. It is not necessarily something that you can do in a day, week, month, or year. If you can, then it is not a Long-Term Objective but merely a step that gets you closer to the big picture.

THE MASTER PLAN A plan is a detailed proposal for doing or achieving something. A Master Plan, in our sense, means a group of individual actions that you need to take to accomplish your Long-Term Objective (like a giant to-do list stretching out over years). In launching a complex new product, you could write a Master Plan covering the design steps, another Master Plan for the hardware, another Master Plan for the software, and so on. Specific people can then be assigned a specific Master Plan to get a job done. A product launch can move swiftly when organized in this fashion. In other words, this is the master things-to-do list that contains everything you need to accomplish your Long-Term Objective.

TEN WAYS TO BUILD A LINKEDIN PROFILE WHICH POPS!

BEN BAKER AUTHOR AND A SPEAKER

By Ben Baker With more than 467 million active accounts on LinkedIn, it has become the platform for business. Each of these people wants to be seen, heard, valued and engaged with, but the majority do a horrific job and do nothing more than add to the ever-increasing amount of noise that is social media today. The truth is, it does not have to be that way. It is possible to stand out. It is possible to be recognized as valuable, and it is possible to meet your objectives by being on the site. Whether you are looking for a job, or a better one, partners, employees, vendors, or a myriad of other things, the first thing you need to do is answer the ever-important question on social media. . . Why should anyone care about me? Everyone is busy and has a limited amount of time. They also have thousands, if not millions of things competing for their limited interest daily. It is those people who can understand who their audience truly is, what value that they can provide them and why those people find you valuable that will eventually rise above the noise. That is every single person’s first objective who is reading this article. Understand who your true audience is and why they care. Not everyone is your target; not everyone will care about you. This is a good thing. Could you hold the attention of 467 million people? I certainly could not; it would be exhausting to try. Better to focus on those who you know you can help, that have problems that you can solve and communicate with them in ways that they will relate. Easier said than done? Possibly, but here are ten ways to immediately change your LinkedIn profile to make it stand out to those whose attention you wish to keep.

Image - I cannot emphasize how important it is to not only have an image on your profile but to have a professional one. It needs to be an image of you, not you and someone else, and it needs to set the tone that you are trying to portray. Do you want people to find you to be a serious person, engaging, relaxed, funny, innovative or charming? The image that you choose will go a long way to set the tone. Not having a professional image dismisses you right away. People

18 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE

wonder what you are hiding and why they should trust you. This is an investment. Do not do the selfie pose and do not take a picture with your webcam. Take the time to hire a professional or have someone who can take a good picture, take one, crop it to the right size, make sure that your glasses are not showing glare and you do not have red eye. Appearance matters, and this is how someone who has never met you and may never meet you, thinks of you and judges your online persona. Note: utilize this same image across your social media. The reason for this is that when people are looking for you on Twitter, Facebook or wherever, they know it is you because they recognize the image as being you.

Byline - Having a byline that tells a story is critical. This is the sentence under your picture that tells people who you are and what you do. I tell people that “I help brands to stop being commodities and instead be branded worth loving.” This is my story. It captures people’s attention and makes them curious to find out more. It does not create a preconceived notion about who I am or what I do and therefore draws people in and compels them to find out more about me. Having a byline that gives a true window about how you help others and what they can expect to find when they dig deeper allows people the opportunity to either move on or dig in. Those who dig in will want to know more, and from this point forward you have captured their attention.

Contact info - Why people do not fill out their contact information on their LinkedIn profiles is beyond me. The reason to have a social media presence is to give people reason and opportunity to engage. Once you have captured their attention, why would you not want them to be able to find out more about you? I have a lot of detail on my contact information page. Personal email, blog site, website, other social media, and even my phone number. I have been online for as long as LinkedIn and Twitter have been around and quite honestly, the aa mount of spam that I get is almost

insignificant. That is why spam filters exist. It allows the valuable information to come in and keeps away the nonsense. I want people to be able to contact me. I want people to have the ability to know what else I am doing digitally, and I want people to have a fuller idea of how I can add value to their lives. By giving people access to my full digital signature, they can appreciate how I can help them, how I add value and how to contact me, so I can support them.

and actions on LinkedIn and throughout social media. They want to know that you talk about certain things and not others. They want to know that your opinion is consistent and that you engage in certain types of conversations and not others. By being consistent, in the way you write, how you think and how you act and react, people will be drawn to you because they know what you stand for and what you stand against.

Biography - Tell your story authentically and compellingly. This is how

matter. It is as important to give good recommendations as it is to get them. It shows people what others think of you and how you think about other people. Take the time and be generous, you will be amazed by how people will reciprocate.

people get to know who the person is behind the screen. A clear and concise biography that tells where you have been, where you are now and what your vision is for the future lets people see the real you. It gives them a reason to care and know that there are commonalities that can help make connections easier and help you build influence through trust. Be real! Don’t try to be who you are not, because it will backfire on you. People will either like you for who you are, or they won’t. Again, you cannot please everyone and why would you even try? Tell people who you are beyond your work experience. Tell them what your passions and interests are. Tell them your goals and the types of people with whom you are trying to connect. All of this makes you who you are, and who you are is interesting to the right people.

Video - Video is becoming more and more critical regarding social media and establishing your presence. People are more willing to watch a video than reading and therefore having a compelling video on your LinkedIn profile increases your opportunity to be heard. I recommend creating a video with subtitles and uploading it natively into LinkedIn. The reason for this is that most people have the video set to run silently and if you have subtitles, they are more likely to either read the subtitles or click on the volume to hear what you have to say. The reason to have the video uploaded natively to LinkedIn is that it is easier to search, and it is seen as more relevant within the LinkedIn algorithm

Experience – When you put information down about your job positions and volunteer work, think more about what you learned and the skills you have gained from doing what you did, rather than the job itself. People are looking for people with experience. They want to know that the person that they are searching has relevant experience in solving specific problems. Job titles do not necessarily tell the accurate story about what you did when working or volunteering. Paint a vivid picture. I had this job, I gained this experience, and I learned this.

Engagement – I cannot stress this enough. It is vital to be engaged in social media and LinkedIn is no exception. Your “likes” means nothing. If you want to be noticed, leave a comment about what you liked about the article or conversation and why. Have an opinion. Be respectful, but let people know why your opinion matters. When you see an article or a cartoon or video online, don’t just share it, share it with a comment saying why you find it relevant. Tag the person you are sharing it from and lend your voice as to why it should be shared and commented upon. Take the time to post. Your opinions and thoughts are just as important as anyone else’s out there. “I saw this today and thought this about it.” Show that you have a unique thought on the platform. Do not just be another “yes” person. Stand up for what you believe and be prepared to defend it. People will acknowledge, engage and be intrigued.

Recommendations – Whether you like it or not, recommendations

Be human – This is probably the most important thing, both online or off that I can recommend to anyone. Care about people, be generous, be empathetic and be a great listener. Take the time to get to know people and find out what their problems are before you bombard them with an offer to help them. Build friendships, create trust and generously support those within your social media circle. It will not go unnoticed. Is this an exhaustive list? Absolutely not! It is a place to start and things to keep in mind as you continue along the journey of building your online presence. Know that you will make mistakes, say sorry when you can, learn from them, evaluate and get better. To your success, ~Ben Baker

RENEE REISCH

NEVER GIVE UP

SPEAKER, FACILITATOR, CONSULTANT

By Renee Reisch

Tom Barette Photography

Hi! My name is Renee Reisch. When I spoke with Heide, the Publisher of Influential People Magazine about being featured in it, I thought about how I have influenced others over the years. Working in Corporate America has taught me a lot, but not half as much as I have learned about myself this past year. I was let go of my job due to a nationwide layoff, my father developed an inoperable stage 4 lung cancer and I lost my best friend in the world. I was devastated and thought my life was over. I fell into a depression and didn’t know how to get out of it. I am and always will be forever grateful to my parents and my family for their love and support. This is my story…

NEVER GIVE UP Have you ever had someone in your life who loved you and believed in you so much, that even during those times when you didn't believe in yourself, she did? For me, that was my friend. She wasn't just any friend, she was my best friend in the world, my soul sister. We did everything together, and nothing together, but it was just being together that made all the difference in the world. The biggest attribute my best friend imparted to me, however, wasn't a memory at all, but rather her legacy to never give up and make sure you have someone in your corner to help you in the process. A prime example of this happened in December of 2013 while I was a manager for a very large retail corporation. I had gone to work sick, but knowing I was the only senior manager scheduled to close that night, I felt compelled to stay. I remember walking out to my car at 1:00 a.m. shivering and barely able to swallow, just looking forward to getting into bed. The next morning, I drove myself to Urgent Care. I told the doctor I felt like I had a sore in my throat as opposed to a regular sore throat. My feeling was confirmed. She said there was one big one sitting smack in the center. I tested negative for strep, but due to the infection, I was running a low-grade fever. The next morning, I felt even worse. My best friend "Lynne" picked me up and drove me back to Urgent Care. My one sore had apparently given birth during the night to many. When I asked the doctor how many there were now, she would not say. She said she knew me well enough to know I would freak out. That alone said it all. She told us to go straight to the ER. Knowing how long a wait it would be, my best friend decided to stop at her house first to pick up a few things. I stood in her living room as she quickly gathered things together. She packed extra socks, snacks, magazines, and a blanket. She made me laugh amidst my pain. I asked if she thought we were going on a picnic or

20 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE

something. She said she wanted FB: Tom Barette to make sure we had everything Www.baretteexpressions.com we might need. Being a former Girl Scout, she was always prepared. While in the ER, I was tested for several diseases, given a spray to numb my throat and was told to follow up with my primary care physician. After a bunch of bloodwork, I was diagnosed with a highly contagious disease known as viral pharyngitis. If I was to go out, I had to wear a mask and if anyone was to visit me, they were to do the same. The only one who ever did was my best friend Lynne. She would come by several times during the week to drop off applesauce, Gatorade, Jell-O, soup, and chicken she cooked...just the way I liked it. She told me I needed protein to keep up my strength. Lynne also always included the latest issue of Cosmo or People she felt I would enjoy. She even brought over coloring books and crayons. She said it would help keep me relaxed. This illness was not only the beginning of a 3 ½ month Leave of Absence from my career but the beginning of learning to survive in a world of isolation where I could no longer be heard. It robbed me of my voice AND made me a prisoner in my own home. While giving up may have been the easy way out, it would not have been best. It has been 5 years since I was so sick, yet it is still in my mind. The saying “if G-d brings you to it, he will bring you through it” really resonates with me. There were lessons I needed to learn. First, to be a better listener. After all, we have two ears and one mouth, and second, to empower others, especially women to use their voice. I have had the pleasure and privilege of using my voice to interview The Women of Achievement aboard the Queen Mary, our Veterans from WW1, WW2, Vietnam, and Korea, been part of Allison H Larsen and Dave Vanhoose’s Women of Influence, Allison’s Spotlight Summit and Tamara Hunter’s 365 Days of Awesome, Celebrate Success Through Service, Service Hero #73. My wish is to create a group of Female “Lovepreneurs” and empower them to use their voice to change the world. I am a leader and know I can help make a difference in the world in which we live, but I can’t do it alone. There are many ways people use their voice. Whether you use sign language, art, music, or are a speaker, or author, reach out. I am a connector and would love the opportunity to connect with you and see how we can work together to make this come to fruition. My journey is far from over, but now I am finally using my voice as it was intended and aligning my passion with my purpose.

NEVER GIVE UP: THE DRIVE If you’re one of those people who makes excuses for not moving forward from your current situation, you are not alone. As crazy as it sounds, it is easier to stay stuck than move forward because it involves risk. This is fear based (False Evidence Appearing Real). The thing is, it doesn’t really serve you. A great example is Colonel Sanders, the founder of the everfamous Kentucky Fried Chicken better known as KFC, one of the biggest fast food chains worldwide. While most people retire at 65, that is precisely the age at which Coronel Sanders’ dream began. He drove all over knocking on every door, sleeping in his car wearing his signature white suit. After being told, “NO” for 1,009 times, it didn’t stop him until he got a “Yes!” This was a tough journey for him, but he never gave up…and neither should you. I am an avid runner. As such, I always see people out walking their dogs or engaging in other physical activity. There was one day that stood out from the rest. During my warmup, I came across a man resembling the likes of Santa Claus (he actually referred to himself in those terms) walking two corgis. One 13 and one 10 months. He was talking about how he has been trying to lose weight and become healthier. I gave him kudos for making the effort and gave him some tips to keep him going. I told him not to think of what he is doing as a diet, but rather a lifestyle. Once he would change his thoughts, the entire process would become much easier. I also suggested he start incorporating more plant-based foods and to stay away from dairy. Slowly, he will begin to see the changes which will keep him motivated to continue. Our conversation soon changed, once "Santa" decided to open up to me about his journey. He told me he is 65 years old and used to be an alcoholic. In 1991 he decided (yes, he made the choice), to stop the madness and change his direction of life as he realized that Alcoholism was no longer serving him. He explained that he had incurred a serious injury in his job for many decades as a bricklayer with two rotator cuff replacements and knee injuries along the way. When he decided to change his life, he went back to school to earn his degree and learn a new trade in real estate. For 8 years he was turned down from jobs in his field, then one day as luck (aka fate) would have it, he was accepted for a job as a real estate appraiser which will begin in just a few weeks. I smiled and congratulated him. He was still in shock that he got hired after so many years of trying. It was then that I decided to share a story about a bracelet I now have from my best friend who passed a year ago. It says, "Never Give Up." I wear it every day. I explained it was because he never gave up on himself that doors opened for him. There was a reason why I stopped on my run...the cute corgis may have been the initial intention, but you see, I too am on a journey of living my purpose. Hearing Santa's story gave me an extra shot of the power of not giving up or giving in. We expressed our gratitude toward one another for taking time out to appreciate our journeys. I finished my run that day in record time. To those of you still trying to figure out your purpose, I will say this: Stay away from the nay-sayers, get out there and surround yourself with like-minded people through networking events and meet up groups. Keep working toward your goals and remember, if you believe it, you can achieve it. Never give up. Your pot of gold awaits.

A Note From Jim...There are many of us who have dreams, goals, and an entrepreneurial spirit. There are others who are maintaining their status quo as well, are just not happy or have issues in sustaining their basic lifestyle. Whatever the scenario, many of us have obstacles or the proverbial “stumbling block” that either holds us back or takes us off track. I have met, observed and have had the fortunate opportunity to see how Renee Reisch interacts on a personal level. Needless to say, I was quite impressed by not only her interpersonal skills but her own self-esteem. I have had the opportunity to see Renee’s warm and positive interaction with the Disabled American Veterans during interviews. She is also very skilled while hosting red carpet events. I have heard comments such as, "WOW... she’s good" and "Renee is a natural!" Renee was the main speaker at an event in the San Diego area and she literally mesmerized her audience with her "get to the point" and "let’s fix it" attitude. What I find as a unique quality, is her ability to help people bring out and resource their gifts and abilities. Many have a variety of skills or goals. The problem is, their skills are not utilized, and their goals are never reached. Renee’s unique gift in finding, bringing out and resourcing the natural born abilities as one has been literally life-changing. She leaves those who she works with both inspired and motivated. It’s quite simple, Renee’s technique along with her method of bringing out one’s skills and talents works. ~ James Zuley - Boomers Talk Radio FB: James Zuley https://ezwaybroadcasting.com/jimzuley

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY

YORAM BALTINESTER AUTHOR, SPEAKER, TRAINER, COACH

By Yoram Baltinester

I

remembered the time I was playing “Chutes and Ladders” with my mom when I was little. We would play the game and roll the dice. Every time I hit the bottom of a ladder I’d jump up and get ahead in the game. And then every once in a while, I would hit a chute. A chute means I’d be losing and going back, away from the finishing line that I wanted so much to cross over before my mom did. The absolute worst thing about the big chute is when you are a few steps away from the finishing line and you have to go farther away from the finishing line. Every time I hit a chute, I noticed I had suffered a setback, and I needed to recover to get back in the game. Little did I know that Chutes and Ladders is a perfect metaphor for Life’s setbacks and gains. You start from nothing to make some gains, whereupon at some points in the game, you lose some of it. Then after having a setback, you recover and continue. Recovery is nothing but again preceded by a setback. Recovery has a halo. It has a halo of a long, hard, outstretched process that may very well be impossible. Even the very name of this article induces a feeling of an odyssey. A tough road full of hazards and monsters, hardships and battles. Let’s look at a few things that may make your path easier. 1. The need to recover occurs as we sustain a setback. No surprise there. When we talk about “recovery”, the question is “recovery from what”. The general answer is, of course, from a setback. It could be a loss of some business; it could be a monetary loss, a loss of an intimate relationship or just a friend; it could be injury, which is the loss of your health; it might be a loss of focus. Any and all of these examples are life setbacks that require us to “recover”. 2. Recovery is a process, not a point in time. Recovery is not instantaneous. Recovery is a process that takes time. The setbacks and subsequent recovery vary in magnitude and lengths. The more substantial or meaningful your loss is, the worse the feeling, and the longer (so it seems) the road to recovery will be. The loss of a client is nothing like the loss of a child, and a loss of a business deal is nothing like filing a bankruptcy. 3. Setbacks are natural and expected, so guess what – it’s okay to need recovery time. Life is a cyclical dynamic of gains and losses. Every time we gain something it feels great, and every time we sustain the loss, we have a feeling that we call, well, the feeling of loss. That is why we feel like we MUST find a way to recover. The need to recover is inseparable from the set-

back of life, both of which are guaranteed. It’s just a matter of time before you will need to recover from something. Because if a setback is actually expected as part of life, understand that having one does not mean you are broken and should not trigger any self-criticism or judgment upon yourself. It does not mean that you are a bad person, parent, spouse, man, woman, or a professional person. Moreover, there would be nothing shameful in a setback either. It really does happen to all of us, and to the best of us. You are not the only one who has one, so relax and join the rest of us, imperfect humans. We experience it frequently too. 4. The pivot - when we accept a setback, we can imagine what recovery looks like When you think setbacks are okay, it is easier to relax than actually dream up what a state of recovery looks like. After all, if you think that the setback is an indication that you are bad and broken, a recovery does not seem possible at all, does it? This is a critical point to make. Without the acceptance of setback, there is no recovery. However, when we do accept it, we can take a moment to sit down and define for ourselves what needs to occur or be achieved. To judge what would be good enough for us (and this is an individual judgment call) to be labeled as a state of recovery. 5. When you know where you need to go, you can plot the path. Once you have a definition of how it looks and feels like to be “recovered”, you can consult an expert or figure out on your own how to get from where you are to a complete and full recovery. From there, you can step up and over the milestones along your path. 6. Celebrate the recovery It is extremely important to celebrate and acknowledge your achievement when your recovery is complete. It energizes you and reinforces your self-confidence and gratitude. Remember, The recovery process is not a point in time. The point in time is when you accept the situation and the setback while you are walking on the path to recovery. Your process of recovery started at the moment when you understood that you had sustained a setback and accepted it. The pivotal moment of realization is when you paved the way for the creation of a recovery plan, it is a plan that requires your time and energy (possibly money, too) before bearing fruit. ~Yoram Baltinester

JOB LOSS AND THE SEVEN DYNAMICS OF CHANGE

NANCY RANGE-ANDERSON

AUTHOR, SPEAKER, TEACHER, COACH, WRITER, CEO

Copyrighted by Nancy Range Anderson Back when I was a corporate learning & development consultant I used a specific change management exercise to introduce a new course or concept. It was based upon the Seven Dynamics of Change developed by Ken Blanchard. The exercise shows that when going through any change, whether in an organization or in our personal lives, we generally go through several steps. They are: • People will feel awkward, ill-at-ease and self-conscious • People initially focus on what they have to give up • People will feel alone even if everyone else is going through the same change • People can handle only so much change • People are at different levels of readiness for change • People will be concerned that they don't have enough resources • If you take the pressure off, people will revert to their old behavior I felt these steps when I lost my own job. Whether for cause, at will and even if you’ve been meaning to leave your job, the following Seven Dynamics of Change will most impact your thoughts. 1. People will feel awkward, ill-at-ease and self-conscious. You may have been let go for cause or part of the wave to downsize a department or organization yet the feeling of being in the spotlight and feeling self-conscious remains and you take it personally. You may immediately consider how your friends or family will look at you or even judge you. It’s an uncomfortable stage. 2. People initially focus on what they have to give up. Like any loss, when you lose your job you immediately think of the intrinsic things that are removed. Things like salary, benefits, and 401K or savings programs may come to mind. There is also job security, the work itself, the routine and the friendships that have been cut off. 3. People will feel alone even if everyone else is going through the same change. Everyone handles things differently so even though a group of people may have been let go, each one will have different needs and feelings. It’s only natural to ask, “Why me?” and “No one understands what I am going through.” 4. People can handle only so much change. With a job loss comes a change in lifestyle and the stressors of life become harder to bear. Not only have you lost your job but you lost your routine. Put that routine/ habit to work as a job search routine. 5. People are at different levels of readiness for change: Some people are up for a new career and some not. Whatever your readiness level, accept it but don’t stay stuck. 6. People will be concerned that they don't have enough resources: It’s natural to worry about finances, payments and the future. Nonessentials are put on the back burner and that might disappoint your family or friends. What about your resume? You may worry about recreating and having enough accomplishments to support your past position. 7. If you take the pressure off, people will revert to their old behavior: Your old job search methods (emailing resumes or applying to websites)

24 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE

won’t always work. On the surface, these steps may give you a sense of accomplishment but in the long run, they are not as effective as networking and face to face interaction. It’s always been about who you know rather than what you know so now it is even more important than ever to network. Also, your old resume format has changed. Make sure you tailor your resume and cover letter to each position. Use keywords, focus on your accomplishments and don't fall back on the same-old/sameold. It matters. Losing a job is difficult and while it is common to grieve and feel many of the emotions listed above, it is also a time for reflection and reconnecting. Job loss is just that; a loss. The feeling you are may be experiencing is natural but if you are having trouble adjusting and moving forward, try reaching out to a friend, family member or professional. . ~Nancy Range Anderson http://blackbirdlearningassociates.com/ Fb: @ Blackbird Learning Associates LLC

LIFE IS A JOURNEY IS A JOURNEY SO, DON’T MISS THE VIEW

PATTIE SADLER TALK SHOW HOST, SPEAKER, AUTHOR

By Pattie Sadler jour·ney [jur-nee] Show IPA noun, plural jour·neys, verb, jour·neyed, jour·ney·ing.

noun 1.a traveling from one place to another, usually taking a rather long time 2.passage or progress from one stage to another: the journey to success.

verb (used without object)

How many times have we heard it? Life is a journey, enjoy the ride? Life is a journey, not a destination… We’ve heard these among many others. However, the question is… Where are we headed? Why are we here? What is the purpose of this so-called life? These questions are very personal, and very much a part of our completeness in this life. Every single person in this world has had those very same questions. Every individual must come to their own terms as to the purpose of their being, the totality of their existence. I, for one, have come to decide that my whole life is a journey and the view is the destination… or rather, what we can look back upon as a whole. It is a known fact that our lives are based on our everyday actions and achievements. Making small goals and accomplishing them rather than the whole grandiose idea of a life that may not ever be achieved. I have come to realize that there are 7 rules in life which can help us get through the day to day living so we can look back and enjoy that view. Let’s consider these rules. 1. Make peace with your past so it will not mess you up in your present. Somehow, we need to let go of the things that are in our past and things that are out of our control. We should make amends whenever and wherever as possible, and then let go of those things which are not our part of our responsibility. If we are living by day to day, thinking or dwelling on the past and the wrongs we have done, or the wrongs were done to us, we are giving up the power of today to live a much more fulfilling life. Part of making peace with the past is not only forgiving others but the ability to forgive ourselves. For if we are unable to completely let go of the swing to jump in that pool, or we will never feel the refreshment of that cool water on a hot day. We can relieve ourselves

32 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE

of a lot of pain just by forgiving others, forgiving ourselves and letting go. 2. What others think of you is absolutely none of your business. Honestly. If we are to dwell on what others might be thinking of us, it would be a waste of energy, time and peace of mind. How could anyone honestly know what is going on in the mind of another? And for that matter, what others think of you does NOT matter! What is important here is that what we believe of ourselves, is what pushes us forward, or keeps us where we are... stuck in the middle of our own mind game, or strategically moving forward in our game of life. 3. Time heals almost everything, so give it some time. If you are suffering, there is a cardinal rule that in order to move forward, one must take it one day at a time. Sometimes one can only stand it a minute or an hour at a time but taking steps to move through the suffering can only bring us to the other side. Trying to hide in our addictions or self-destructive behavior to cover and hide the pain, only causes more pain in the long run. Face it head-on, day to day, and you will find yourself happier as you are able to look back at the span of it all. 4. Don’t compare your journey to that of another and do not judge them. You cannot see what the journey is of another and you have no idea as to what their life is all about. The only vision of a life that you can see through your own eyes is your own. The only experience that you have is what you experience. Your life is your vision and will be your perspective that helps you as you move through your time on this earth. As you consider your own life, you might realize, that no one really can tell you what is best for you or how you really should be. In the same sense, you really can’t tell another person how they should be because their perspective is unique and very personal. Do each day to your best ability and focus on yourself and your choices then it will be a success for today. 5. Stop thinking so much!!! It is absolutely ok to not be sure of an answer, they will come to you when you least expect them. Many of us spent too much time in our own heads to see the past, the future, or let alone the present. Don’t focus on the past, don’t waste time dreaming of a future that isn’t here. We must live in the present to

create memories and something to look back on. Do the best you can be with “right now” and tomorrow you will be grateful for the triumph of another day. 6. No one is in charge of your happiness, except for YOU... That’s right folks, No one gets to decide your mood, and you cannot hang the responsibility on another for this one. Being happy is a condition of the mind and an absolute choice. Sure, there are situations and circumstances around us that might not make us so happy at times, and we may be worried or concerned about a lot of things life has to throw at us, but the trick here is enduring and how we handle these circumstances. Do we use drugs because of it? Do we throw a tantrum? Or do we choose to sit in our room and cry? No… Not to say that there are those who have depression, however, taking the steps to get ourselves healthy, taking the needed medication, exercise, or eating healthy, getting the rest one needs, or just taking care of responsibilities each day... We just need to endure and move forward and be determined. We do not give up and we do not blame others. No one can control how you feel. We are responsible for our behaviors and yes, our feelings too. It is not wrong to be sad, or upset, or disappointed, it is realizing these emotions, letting go and being OK in the long run that matters. 7. Smile, you don’t own all the problems in the world. The weight of the world is not on your shoulders. We can become overwhelmed when we consider not only our own problems, but the problems of the next person, and the next, and the community, and the society, and the whole world…… OH MY!! What a tragic decision that is. We must be in control of our own situations and treat our day as a treasure. Take care of yourself. Smile in the mirror and say “Hello world!! It is an absolutely beautiful day” and yes, of course, faking it until we make it does seem to be a ticket. We can coach ourselves on a daily basis to be more positive and find the sunshine in things around us. Yes… Take those arms and wrap them around yourself and give yourself a hug. Today is yours. You are worth smiling about. You know, I believe that life is a series of days taken one day at a time. I look back on my life; I see the tragedies and how I have dealt with them, the happiness of those years has filled me up for making a choice to take it a day at a time. If I try to take on my whole life in an hour I would become far too overwhelmed and suffer for that choice. I have made every effort over the last 5 years to simplify my life by taking the steps I have discussed here. Because of these steps, I can learn to enjoy the scenery as I go through to see that whole view when I get to my destination. Part of taking it a day at a time is taking on being responsible; being honest with myself; being honest with those around me and being full of gratitude for all that has been given to me and all that I have achieved. If it weren’t for the daily achievements and daily goals met, I would not have got ANYWHERE! So, today my challenge for you is this. Take life a day at a time. Stop and smell the roses and be grateful for those in your life that make it more meaningful. Take a challenge one at a time… completing one goal and then the next. One does not reach the top of the stairs except by one step at a time. So, if you want to ride the banister down, consider how you will get there first. And remember, before the ride down on that sled down the snow-covered mountain, take a deep breath.

Can read a lesson plan and IEP. 1-part Educator, 1 part entrepreneur, 2 parts mom, and 3 parts student. Too many parts? Loving to multi-task and learning late in life that my natural ability lied in teaching shocked me too! After spending years in dental assisting, visual merchandising, real estate and real estate development - pursuing things that I was told would make money and therefore make me happy, I was miserable. I joined the academic world, in 2011, and became known as Mrs. Baird. Intrigued with learning myself I knew I wanted to be able to ignite the minds of youth. Although, I quickly realized I had a heart for the special education populations. From children with Autism and other spectrum disorders to dyslexia and oppositional defiant populations; I have officially found my calling. However, in April of 2012, at the table while getting my taxes prepared I sat with a huge smile on my face. I knew I had spent a lot of money on my classroom as I developed lessons and experiences my student would never forget, but I also knew I would get it back on my taxes… WRONG! That year I spent $1,700 on classroom supplies and was only able to write off $250!?! Motivated by the thought of saving teacher’s money (myself included) my other great passion has become building a collaborative platform for teachers to shop, save and sell unused classroom supplies. I help certified educators save their own money and still deliver the quality lesson experiences that keep them passionate about teaching young minds. ~Monica Baird @info@scholarsdollar.com FB: @monica.baird.37

IF SCARS HAD A VOICE WHAT WOULD IT SAY?

JENNY MULKS

CEO/FOUNDER, SPEAKER, AUTHOR, ADVOCATE, PHILIANTHROPIST, CANCER COACH

By Jenny Mulks While impatiently waiting to check-in for a flight I’m running late for, unbeknownst to me, the gift of perspective and gratitude surrounded me. The moment my eye caught the gentleman in the wheelchair traveling alone, the energy from my harried schedule shifted. Unaccompanied and struggling to bring his luggage to check in, he rolled his chair with one arm while attempting to drag a suitcase and carry on with the other. He denied assistance despite his visible struggles, and he kept wheeling forward with a determination that he was getting on that plane, headed to an adventure. Is he embarrassed by accepting help? Was he in an accident? I wonder if he was previously married, and she left? The script begins to run in my head as I begin to write ‘the story’ for a man I didn’t know and would never meet. I looked around to observe several more that are enduring daily struggles with life-altering disabilities; To the side of me, is a young boy of 11 years old, missing his leg from the top of his thigh on down. He’s playing with a younger girl that is missing her right arm. They are accompanied by 2 adults, that don’t look to be their parents, but what do I know? However, I begin “writing their story in my head”. Was it cancer? Was it an accident? Is that their parents? So many questions and “stories” are running through my mind to fill in the blanks. Behind me, a middle-aged woman in her 60’s, holding her white cane in one hand and her traveling companion in the other, wearing a joyful smile on her face. Where was she headed? How does she experience a new place when she can’t see it? Doesn’t she feel vulnerable traveling? The script keeps running in my head…. What happened in their lives that completely altered their paths? Are they happy? How would I feel if I were in any of their shoes? I can visually observe and see their ‘injuries’, their loss and their scars but I am also able to observe the softness and gratitude they share through their kind demeanor and the happiness that seems to illuminate from them. Feeling a sense of selfishness and shame with my former level of impatience, I take a deep breath, inhaling gratitude for this moment of aware-

44 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE MAGAZINE

ness and exhaling a new perspective that what we see on the outside, is most often not the story on the inside. And how we short-change ourselves and others, thinking we know people and their stories without having the privilege and honor of really doing so. I’ve experienced this personally, time and again. I’ve received pity where I didn’t deserve it and I’ve received a judgment that was far from reality. But from this, I have received grace and wisdom in knowing there is more behind every human than what meets the eye. All too often, based on what people view on the outside, they judge what your life must be like, who you are, what you are about. ‘Your story’ is written by many who know nothing of you, your trials, your triumphs, your shame, and your glory. This seems more natural for strangers to do to one another, yet still unfair. But when friends, family, and lovers do this, what a loss to not get to know the real person standing before you. That beautiful, perfectly imperfect person that you could love even deeper and more authentically if you knew their true ‘what and why’, you’re not only seeing their scars but hearing what those scars had to say. What about the scars that are not visible to the eye? These emotional scars are often remnants of the visual scars or painridden experiences of loss, grief, and change. What we do not see with the naked eye or a camera lens, is what is taking place in the heart of this person. Our assumptions rob us of the opportunity to learn why they believe, feel, trust, respond, recoil, think, behave, and love, the way we do. We place our assumptions upon others and write their story for them, without any knowledge of who they are, what they believe in and why they are passionate about their WHY. Allowing the scars to have a voice from the person that wearing them is a gift to both of you. In my work with children fighting cancer, I see the battles they face on a daily basis with each of those challenges. I see the physical scars and even deeper, I see the emotional scars of these children and their families, because they share them with me. Being a cancer survivor myself and being given a second chance at life after a terminal diagnosis, I know what goes into fighting cancer, as well as the journey of survivorship, if you are blessed to survive. I know what both the physical and emotional scars are like. However, many only see the visual scars of mine.

When people see the 18” J-shaped scar covering my stomach, many see the remnants of an engraved surgical scar where the skin is now healed. Where “something bad must have happened”. However, I see where a deadly tumor once lived and wanted to take me away from my 4-year-old little boy. I see parents, family, and friends that were preparing for my death. I see tears, a vast chasm of fear, desperation, loneliness, and illness. I see the loss of love and abandonment. I see God’s walk beside me. I see my family and friends that lifted me up with light and love. I see hope, love, and miracles. I see that goodness overshadows the bad. I see that anything is possible. Regardless of what is there visually, beneath that scar lie other scars, not visible to the naked eye, but only seen by the soul where survivorship, love, and loss, lives and breathes.

Frank Shankwitz

If you’ve earned this space in my heart, and you ask, I will share. I will share my perfectly imperfect self that has fears, broken pieces, bad decisions, and tragedies. But I will also share my triumphs, comebacks, bravery, hope, and persistence. My hope is that when you know and see my scars, you will feel and witness the love and grace in my heart that fuel my soul to be the essence of love and to help mankind. You would never know that story if you filled in the blanks for me. You will never know someone else’s story if you fill in the blanks for them. Every scar has its own authentic and vulnerable beauty. It encompasses your story of surviving whatever marked you, whatever tried to hurt you, showing that you survived and hopefully thrived. Our scars show our unique growth through the process of healing and the body’s amazing ability to want to heal us, to be whole. Often times it is the lifealtering moments that create our deepest scars building character, empathy, discernment, compassion, perseverance, grace, gratitude and purpose. We are all eventually survivors of some story that will continue to shape our humanness. Not all scars are bad nor are they equal, but they do deserve to be treated with compassion. Begin by listening to the voice of the scars of those you love and grow by sharing this journey together. Scars make us human. Just because we have some scars doesn’t mean that we can’t be filled with joy, happiness, and hope! ~Jenny Mulks
