WEDDING BUDGET 101

“What’s your budget?” It’s one of the first questions your vendors will ask as you set up consultations.

Why It’s Important

According to a recent poll, only 9% of couples didn’t pay for any part of their wedding. The remaining 91% need a financial plan to help govern decision making when choosing the best fit for wedding vendors. Creating a spending plan at the start of the wedding planning process saves you time because it helps to narrow your focus to the vendors whose prices fall within your spending range. It also saves you the heartache of falling in love with a product or service provider that you really cannot afford. Now, let’s get to the math.

The Perfect Formula

FC + CC = MS x 75% = WB!

STEP 1:

Determine your family contribution (FC).

Sometimes, parents or other family members offer to pay for a specific service like the cake, photography, or music. It is certainly helpful to have loved ones make a financial commitment to assist with your big day; however, they may not have a current idea of the cost of the service. Therefore, it’s recommended that you ask them to tell you the specific dollar amount that they would like to contribute and when you can expect to receive it.

STEP 2:

Calculate the couple’s contribution (CC).

What you and your fiancé have saved specifically for the wedding is the basis for the “couple’s contribution.” If you don’t have a dedicated savings, you can still have the wedding of your dreams -

you just need more time to realize that dream. Take your after-tax income and subtract all the bills and personal expenses that you have in a month. The cash that you have left can be added to wedding savings. Add this amount for the number of months that remain before your target wedding date, and now you have your couple’s contribution.

STEP 3:

Add the family contribution to the couple contribution to determine the maximum spend (FC + CC = MS).

This is the maximum amount that you will have available to spend on your wedding. There are always unexpected items that come up, especially if you don’t partner with a professional wedding planner who can advise you of the things that your detailed budget may be missing. It’s important to take one more step to determine your wedding budget.

STEP 4:

Reduce the maximum spend by 25% (MS x .75 = WB!)

Reducing the maximum spend amount ensures that you will not overspend even when you pick-up last-minute items just days before your wedding. Now you have your wedding budget!

A classic wedding met with personal flair What is a Wedding Content Creator?
Julie
Photography Julie Martin Photography

A wedding content creator captures your wedding day using a phone, from the first look to the sweet in-between moments including all the BTS and details. The goal: deliver hundreds of clips, photos, and edited reels in a highlight video so you and your new spouse can relive each one together forever. Typically, these are delivered within 24 hours after the wedding day. Whether one intends to share their wedding on social media or wants to relive their big day on video, a wedding content creator can help preserve every moment.

Why are couples hiring a wedding content creator?

To have someone capture with video wedding day footage.

They desire an unplugged wedding day surrounded by fully present loved ones with peace of mind that the all the special moments will be captured.

To see footage of their wedding the day after.

To get ready-to-post content (like a highlight reel) for social media pages.

They want candid, un-staged BTS moments.

· To see footage of the things often missed during wedding days, such as cocktail hour or time in the bride and groom suites.

Your wedding day flies by, and with a scheduled timeline of events, it's easy to miss the details and moments that are so special. A wedding content creator can record your entire first dance to the sweet, candid conversation with your groom after saying "I Do." In addition to the more significant moments, the aim is to capture the little ones too that will bring you back to the exact way you felt on your wedding day. These are the most treasured, sacred moments in your life, and it's a content creator's job to preserve them for you and future generations.

TINY GUESTS, BIG DILEMMA: Navigating Kids at the Wedding

Planning a wedding and incorporating both the children who may take part in the ceremony and those of the guests can be fun, but also daunting. There are several ways to make sure the young ones have a good time while also maintaining a similitude of control. The adults may then also enjoy themselves while their children are involved in activities. Here are some ideas:

· KIDS TABLE: Set up a separate table with age appropriate activities such as coloring books, crayons, puzzles, and games to keep them occupied during the reception.

· HIRE A PROFESSIONAL CHILDCARE SERVICE:

Consider hiring a professional service to provide supervised activities and games during the wedding as well as the reception. Parents can relax and enjoy the festivities while knowing their children are well taken care of.

· KIDS MENU: The food selected for your guests may be scrumptious, but for children, (who can be a little finicky), you may want to rethink their menu. Offer a different menu at a separate table with child-friendly foods such as chicken tenders, mac and cheese, mini burgers, and

pizza. They will not only be well fed, but happy. Also, skip the wedding cake and provide mini cupcakes instead.

· OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES: If the wedding is outside, set up outdoor activities such as bouncy houses, scavenger hunts, mini golf, bean bag toss, and giant Jenga and Connect Four. Also, a well-managed s’mores bar can be incorporated.

· DANCING, MUSIC, AND ENTERTAINMENT:

Children like to dance. Consider asking the DJ to incorporate upbeat music that the kids can dance to. You may also hire a clown, balloon artist, or face painter to keep them occupied.

· PHOTO BOOTH: Set up a photo booth with props for kids to take pictures. This creates memories that will last a lifetime.

· GOODIE BAGS: Prepare goodie bags with small toys, games, and treats. This is a great way to thank the children who are taking part in your wedding, as well as fun for those who are in attendance.

You can ensure that the children will have a great, fun-filled time while also allowing their parents and all of the adults to enjoy your most memorable and beautiful day!

Planning a wedding is an exciting journey filled with dreams of love and lifelong commitment. However, turning those dreams into reality often comes with a hefty price tag. As you embark on the path to matrimony, the question of how to manage wedding expenses can loom large. In this article, we'll explore invaluable budget tips ensuring that your special day is as magical as you've envisioned, without breaking the bank.

It is advised to set your budget at 75% of the maximum amount available to spend. Inevitably, there are details that are excluded from the planning and therefore the budget. Setting aside a small reserve ensures that there is enough money to cover all the costs of the wedding and reduces stress. These are some of the most common items that couples forget to include.

The Marriage License

Yes, you must pay for that! The cost of a marriage license in Virginia varies by county. Expect to pay between $30 - $35 and be sure to note the forms of payment that are accepted at the county office. This is a small, but often overlooked cost.

Undergarments

You’ve included the cost of your attire, alterations, and accessories. Don’t ruin the look by failing to have the proper support (or socks)!

Postage

Wedding invitations printed on lovely, weighted stock with multiple pages will require more than the standard postage. Formal invitations should include a response card with postage attached to save guests the trouble of having to find a stamp and risk receiving the response

The Sneaky Six

Don’t forget to include these things in your budget.

after your deadline or not at all. Ask your stationer how much postage is required and take one complete invitation suite to the post office to confirm the cost.

Lodging

Planning to stay in a hotel the night before the wedding? Want to keep the hotel room until you leave for your honeymoon on Tuesday? Great! Plan for those extra room nights in your budget.

Wedding Day Meals

You’ve asked wedding attendants to join you six hours prior to the start of the wedding so you can get ready together. Feed them! It’s going to be a long day and you’ll need some energy to get through it. Additionally, make provisions for wedding vendors that will be with you more than four hours (i.e., the band/DJ, coordinator, photographer, videographer).

Gratuities

Remember you are paying for services. Gratuity should not be expected by any vendors. However, if a vendor goes above and beyond your expectations and the agreed upon services, add an additional 10 – 20%. The DJ, MC, band members, makeup artist, manicurist, stylist, photographer, videographer, and wedding planner/coordinator do not typically have gratuity included in their service cost.

The harmonization of new and old, perfectly coming together into a venue unlike any other.

When an engaged couple tours Main Street Station, it’s usually the same process. They come in curious to see the venue, then once they see the gorgeous bare bones and unique city feel, their jaws drop and they can picture their wedding vision immediately.

It’s the middle of wedding season and the Richmond Weddings™ Team is sitting with Crystal Lowery, Events Manager at Main Street Station, the woman responsible for helping make city nuptial dreams come true. If you haven’t seen the shed of Main Street Station before, prepare to be wowed. Trains silently breeze by the glass box and are the perfect complement to the unique industrial feel. The concrete floors reflect the recessed lights above and give a dull reflection of the absolutely breathtaking ceiling. Exposed metal beams, the only thing left from the original building, harmonize with new wooden ones, creating that perfect balance of new and old.

Alluding to the jaw drops of touring couples, Crystal explains, “The space really has that effect!” Bring in an experienced wedding planner, and it will transform into whatever vision you’d like.

The train shed, roughly the length of two football fields can turn your wedding into a set of experiences. Break up the length by drapes, opening a section for each part of your celebration. Start with your ceremony at the front, then open a pair of drapes to high tops and a bar for your cocktail hour. Continue to your reception, eventually ending at the back of the shed with your band and dance floor. Dance the night away with your closest family and friends with the Richmond city lights as your backdrop.

While the shed of Main Street Station is obviously impressive, it’s the Head House, an

event space at the front of the building that hosts most of their weddings.

The Head House, which can accommodate up to 200 guests, is where you feel Main Street Station’s history. The Renaissance architecture from 1901 transports you to an older time in Richmond’s history. With two side rooms with exquisite details, one gets that old city feel when climbing the stairs to the event space. Encased on the outside with brick, the Head House is superbly intimate, and just like the expansive train shed, can be transformed into anything you’d like. Crystal explains, “We had one wedding have their ceremony in the Head House, and then everyone came down to the lower level for the cocktail hour as the catering company switched the room over into a beautiful reception.” A quaint and almost secretive balcony sits adjacent to the room, the perfect escape for you and your guests to get that breath of fresh air while looking over Main Street.

The North Plaza, completed in 2022, is Main Street’s Station newest option for hosting your wedding. Located outside of the train station, this space can also accommodate up to 200 guests for all wedding related events including rehearsal dinners, ceremonies, and cocktail hours. If you are concerned about whether putting a damper on the festivities, the space can also be tented to keep you and your guests comfortable.

Main Street Station, in all its parts, is beautiful on its own. You don’t really need too much decor, the space speaks for itself. Completely unique and unlike any other spot on the East Coast, you can create your wedding vision. From the highway, your guests will be impressed. The glass shed and original clock tower standing tall against the backdrop of Shockoe Bottom.

The clock tower was the palate for the entire building and made an appearance on national television in 2018. When Richmond was named one of the cities in season 14 of ABC’s The Bachelorette, the Main Street Station team knew the lucky couple had to come to the Station. The couple had their date in the empty train shed and then sealed the deal with a kiss on the top of the clock tower.

Large floor to ceiling windows let in loads of light, giving you the feeling of being outside, without having to worry about the weather. Since the entire train station is climate controlled, it doesn’t matter if you’re getting married on a snowy February Saturday or the hottest day in August, your experience inside of Main Street Station will be just as spectacular.

When getting married at Main Street Station, there’s the sense of being part of an integral part of Richmond. Known as “The Welcome Mat of Richmond,” Main Street Station is bringing an exquisite air to the River City. The harmonization of new and old, perfectly coming together into a venue unlike any other. Transport your guests to a wedding experience they’ve never had before without losing that sense of YOU on your big day.

Main Street Station has been a landmark in Downtown Richmond since 1901. The station offers two event spaces, perfect for any size. For more information and booking inquiries please call: (804) 646-1862

TOP 5 REASONS to Consider an All-Inclusive Venue

The cost of a venue can be one of the largest expenses for your big day. Before choosing, it’s always a good idea to do some investigating. If you are looking into ones that can do it all, an all-inclusive site may be just the ticket. Here are just a few of the benefits.

1. Convenience

Booking an all-inclusive venue typically includes the space, catering, bar services, staffing, coordination, decorating, and more.

5. Food and Drink Options

These venues have the catering all figured out and will offer many packages to choose from. They will help you plan all the food and bar options from the cocktail hour all the way to cake cutting.

2. Vendor Connections

The venue is booked, but you’re drawing a blank on a florist, a baker, and a DJ. Most places that offer all-inclusive packages will be more than happy to refer you to other amazing professionals in your area.

3. Save Money

This type of venue can be a cost-effective decision that allows more bang for your buck. Who wouldn’t want to save a few dollars for the honeymoon?

4. Reduced Stress and Great Service

You’ll have more time to enjoy the engagement knowing that everything you need is being taken care of by professionals whose only goal is to make the wedding day amazing.

There you have it!

5 great reasons to consider an all-inclusive venue.

First Five Things to Do After You Get Engaged

1. SET YOUR SPENDING PLAN. Beginning the wedding planning process with a spending plan saves you time because it helps narrow your focus to the vendors whose prices fall within your spending range. It also saves you the heartache of falling in love with a product or service provider that you really cannot afford. Be realistic about how much you’re willing to spend on your wedding and how much financial assistance your family is able to commit.

2. CHOOSE THE GUEST LIST. Consider the people who are closest to you, your partner, and your family and write their names down to get a solid estimate of the number of people that will attend the wedding. You want to be able to accommodate guests comfortably and many vendors will need to know the guest count to provide a quote for their services.

3. DECIDE THE TYPE OF VENUE. Will the ceremony be held at a church or a non-religious venue? Are you looking for an indoor or outdoor reception venue? Will the ceremony and reception be in the same location? Are you looking for a venue that is a blank canvas to transform or a venue with its own personality and themed decor? Knowing the answers to all these questions (and items 1 and 2) will direct the venue search.

4. PRIORITIZE YOUR WEDDING DATE. Look at other events or celebrations that are happening in your lives or in the general geographic vicinity and rank your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice of wedding weekend or date. The more flexibility there is with the date, the more options you have for venue and vendors.

5. HIRE A PLANNER. Choose a wedding planner or coordinator before signing any other contracts. They can help you save time, stay on budget, and savor the moment. Even if you’re just seeking assistance with direction and coordination on the wedding day, having a planner in place at the start of the process will help when making decisions. They can provide recommendations for reputable vendors, give you questions to ask to evaluate them, and help think through logistics that will become critical on the wedding day.

The Slice of Heaven You’ve Been Looking For OAKDALE

When he was driving past a beautiful farm property every day on his way to work, Chris Stem never imagined that he would someday get to turn that property into a wedding venue.

When he was driving past a beautiful farm property every day on his way to work, Chris Stem never imagined that he would someday get to turn that property into a wedding venue.

“I kept telling my wife that I couldn’t let it turn into a housing development,” Chris says. “I think she thought I was a little crazy, but here we are!” After surviving 2020 after just opening in 2019, Oakdale is now fully immersed in the wedding boom and booking well into 2024.

When he chose to create the wedding space, one thing was completely clear to Chris: he had to maintain the integrity of the land and its rich history. The first step? Choosing a name with plenty of personal meaning.

The name Oakdale comes from partner Jeff Sears’ nearby family farm that has been passed down from generation to generation since 1902. Today, Oakdale still maintains its agricultural roots. It is the home of 75 head of cattle, pigs, sheep, and a booming hay operation. It is also Chris’s home and of course, a stunning wedding and event venue.

Oakdale is the perfect combination of convenience and seclusion. The 100-acre property is perfectly quiet and idyllic, yet it sits just 10 minutes from Short Pump and Downtown Ashland. Options for rehearsal dinner

spots and guest accommodations are plentiful! Plus, for your out-oftown guests, Oakdale is a quick 35-minute drive from the Richmond Airport.

The jewel of it all, a modern black and white barn with giant picture windows, provides the perfect balance of rusticity and elegance. “It looks like a barn, but inside, it’s a blank slate,” Chris says. “Our couples can create a space that feels elegant, or they can make it feel simple and cozy. It’s all over the map. We’ve seen everything from rustic themes to an opulent indoor garden theme. It’s a great space to create whatever dream you have for your big day.”

The fully climate-controlled barn overlooks a glittering pond and open hayfield where couples can choose from multiple picturesque outdoor locations for their ceremony. Your cocktail hour can take place inside or you can use the two outdoor patios complete with a fire pit and outdoor bar for those pre-dinner drinks.

With 4,000 square feet of indoor event space, Oakdale can host weddings up to 200 guests. You can choose to have your ceremony outside or inside, whichever you (or the weather!) prefer. There’s also an option to host a fully outdoor wedding under a tent or in the

open air so you can enjoy a night under the stars. The venue is fully handicap accessible and of course, includes plenty of parking for guest vehicles as well as limos and buses.

Oakdale is the perfect venue for the couple who wants to keep the planning process simple. Your package includes 10 hours of venue access, a day-of coordinator, multiple outdoor ceremony site options, indoor event space, tables, chairs, linens, golf carts to shuttle your guests from their cars to the event, bartenders, set up, break down, and even a DJ if you’d like! “The building sells itself,” Chris says. “We offer so much — our clients are comfortable because we take so much off of their plates.”

Questions to Consider When Curating Your Wedding Weekend Culinary Experience

An interview with Bartizan’s Executive Sous Chef, Nick Lawrence

What style of dinner service best suits your event?

When crafting your culinary experience, first pick your style of dinner service: plated, buffet, or station-style are some of the most popular choices. If you’re looking for a more formal event, a plated dinner is your best option. Guests are served a first course, a salad, soup, or carpaccio, and then are given a choice to preselect their main course. A main course that features two proteins is called a duet and is highly recommended from a culinary perspective. Guests are given the choice of the duet option or a vegetarian/vegan option. This allows for the kitchen to serve guests more efficiently because 95% of guests receive the duet meal. A choice-of-plated meal is when your guests select between three different main entrees; most commonly two proteins and one vegetarian/vegan option. A buffet-style dinner is normally unattended, and all food options are placed in one location. For a buffet dinner, consider having two to three heavier options like pasta, protein, or starch and two to three lighter options such as a salad and seasonal vegetables. A station-style (or sometimes called a cocktail-style) dinner is executed best at an explorative venue. You may or may not have full seating for your guests and stations are placed around the room(s) to encourage mingling. These options are typically chef-attended and interactive. Pro-Tip: Consider what style of service you are featuring at your wedding and then consider doing something different at your rehearsal dinner to give those guests two different dining experiences.

How can you elevate your culinary experience and make it memorable?

The culinary/beverage experience begins when your guests arrive at your ceremony. Nothing makes a better welcome than being greeted with spiked hot cider when the weather is chilly or a glass of bubbles in the summer. At your reception, consider pre-setting an amuse bouche. This is a great way to get your guests truly excited about the courses to come. For

RICHMONDWEDDINGS.COM 33

your first course, a salad with romaine, parmesan, and croutons is okay (and expected) BUT, a baby beet salad with goat cheese, citrus, candied nuts, shaved radishes, and balsamic glaze is MEMORABLE. Even if your aunt doesn’t “like” beets, she will most likely give it a try, and who knows, she might love it and talk about it at every future family Thanksgiving. Instead of a champagne toast (that many guests end up wasting), add table-side wine service. Pinot Grigio and Cabernet Sauvignon are two popular and approachable wines that pair nicely with most dishes. If your wedding or rehearsal dinner is intimate, under 50 guests, really take it to the next level with a four to five-course wine-paired dinner. The meal would typically start with a seasonal soup/salad paired with a light white wine like Albariño and would end with an indulgent dessert paired with a dessert wine like Petit Manseng.

What are some creative ways to incorporate seasonal ingredients into your wedding menu?

A great place to be creative and highlight seasonal ingredients is in your first course/amuse bouche. During the Spring/Summer months, consider a compressed watermelon salad with feta and baby arugula; this dish is bright and bursting with flavor. A salad highlighting roasted butternut squash during the Fall/Winter months paired with bacon and a smoked yogurt dressing is literally like a campfire in your mouth, in the very best way. Also, don’t be afraid to reach out to your Chef on ways to incorporate unique ingredients that are available during your specific wedding season. Working with seasonal/local fresh ingredients is one of the best parts of the job. Your food isn’t the only item that can be seasonal. Consider featuring a seasonal fruit, vegetable, or herb in your signature drink like a strawberry basil Moscow mule or rosemary cucumber gimlet.

How can you make your menu unique yet cohesive?

Think about your menu as an entire experience from cocktail hour to dessert. Consider a variation of textures like crispy, chewy, and creamy. Select dishes with different flavor profiles like spicy, salty, sweet, and acidic. For example, tuna poke hits all of these flavor

profiles with its crunchy rice cracker, spicy citrus sauce, creamy avocado salad, and nutty toasted sesame seeds.

How much food is enough food?

Three to five passed canapés are recommended for cocktail hour. A stationary display, like an oyster bar or a Mediterranean station, is optional but recommended for cocktail hour as well to give your guests something to interact with. For the reception, ensure your plated meal has at least two courses and your station/buffet dinner has five to eight options. Many wedding clients are moving away from traditional wedding cakes and offering a dessert display instead. Consider serving gelato with an assorted gourmet cookie bar. Who doesn’t want to devour a warm brown butter chocolate chip cookie when taking a break from the dance floor? Sending your guests home with a snack for the road like a homemade brioche grilled cheese to soak up the booze is a current trend that’s here to stay.

How can you balance different dietary preferences and requirements when crafting your menu?

Offer passed canapés during cocktail hour from all categories: land, sea, and woods. Also, ensure you have gluten-free options available throughout the entire evening. An easy way to accommodate both vegetarian and vegan guests is to pick a main course that can satisfy both. For example, risotto can be made vegan with a simple switch of replacing the butter and parmesan with miso. Also, keep in mind that you’re never going to please every guest. It is YOUR wedding, so above all else, your culinary experience should represent you and your partner. If you love lamb chops because they remind you of your first date but are worried your cousin won’t eat them because she’s vegan, serve them anyway. The other 99% of your guests will thank you!

About Chef Nick: A Powhatan native, Nick began his career as a dishwasher at a country club and was quickly promoted to Sous Chef, where he sharpened his technical culinary skills for the next seven years. In 2020, Nick joined the Dover Hall Experiences team. Wine-paired multi-course meals are one of Nick’s favorites to cook because of the opportunity to experiment and get creative with seasonal ingredients and new techniques.

Something Blue:

INCORPORATING SAPPHIRES INTO YOUR DAY-OF JEWELRY

We all know the old adage by heart: “Something old, something new…something borrowed, something blue.” The rhyme stems from 1800s Victorian England and was thought to bring good luck to a long and joyous marriage. Traditionally, a blue garter is worn to check off the final piece of the list. However, allow us to introduce a much sparklier option that is sure to make your special day all the more memorable and oh-so-gorgeous.

In a modern twist on an old classic, opting for stunning sapphires is a unique, sentimental, and practical way to incorporate something blue into your day-of-lucky trinkets. Whether you prefer simple sapphire studs, a diamond-encrusted sapphire bracelet, or have selected a blue sapphire and diamond wedding band, here are a few of our favorite blue sapphire beauties to consider adding to the day-of lineup:

46 RICHMOND WEDDINGS MAGAZINE

PEAR SHAPE SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND HALO STUDS

Beautiful pear shape blue sapphires totaling 1.00 carat are surrounded by halos of round brilliant cut diamonds totaling 0.34 carats. A classic jewelry staple, bridal or otherwise.

SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND STATION TENNIS BRACELET

This tennis bracelet beautifully features oval-cut blue sapphires totaling 6.78 carats alternating between 0.56 carats of round brilliant cut diamonds, giving you that perfectly subtle “pop” of blue. Can be worn for years to come alone or stacked with mixed metal bracelet options

OVAL SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND HALO RIGHT-HAND RING

Timeless and elegant, this ring features an oval cut blue sapphire weighing 1.00 carat surrounded by a halo of round brilliant cut diamonds totaling 0.28 carats. Maybe our childhood dreams of marrying William or Harry didn’t pan out…this is the next best thing! Sport on your right hand for that extra daily dose of royal. Kate and Diana approved!

ALTERNATING SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND BAND

Crafted in a modern single-prong design, this band features emerald-cut blue sapphires totaling 1.30 carats and round brilliant cut diamonds totaling 0.20 carats. It’s true what they say–you’ll want to relive your wedding day over and over again. Extend your special something blue to last a lifetime alongside the engagement ring!

There are dozens of “something blue” options, and truly something to suit every style, taste, preference, or tradition. Rest assured, sapphires are precious gemstones, which means their durability, rarity, and value are unmatched–much like you and your partner’s love story.

5 TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE WEDDING MORNING

50 RICHMOND WEDDINGS MAGAZINE
Kylie Hinson Photography

Planning a wedding can sometimes be a little stressful. Coordinating all the details, making sure everyone has what they need, and packing all items can often feel overwhelming. While the beginning of your day can seem less important than other parts (ceremony, reception, etc.), it is an essential portion and can set the tone for the rest of the wedding. Here are five tips for a seamless and stress-free morning that will pave the way!

1. Give Yourself More Time

Plan to give yourself 1-2 more hours than what you think is needed. Often hair and makeup will run long, someone in the wedding party will get stuck in traffic on the way to the venue, or an important item is left and must be retrieved. There are many factors that may push the timeline back. This will cut into portrait time, or in the worst case, will delay the start of the ceremony. By adding in extra time to get ready, if something doesn’t go 100% according to plan, you won’t be stressed about the timeline getting off track.

2. Wedding Emergency Kit

Have a wedding emergency kit with everything you might need on the day of. Come prepared with essentials such as band-aids, bobby pins, deodorant, toothpaste, mouthwash, double sided tape, super glue, stain pen, scissors, tool kit, etc. You never know when these items might come in handy!

3. Eat

Eating the morning of your wedding is so important! Often this will be the only chance for food until cocktail hour. And if you’re not having a first look, then there is a good chance you won’t get to eat until the reception which means you could be going upwards of ten hours before you have a meal. Make sure to eat before getting dressed so that you avoid spilling on your outfit!

4. Know How to Finalize Your Outfit

Practice buttoning the dress, tying the corset and/or bowtie, fastening all straps, and know how to bustle your dress before the big day. Don’t waste time at the wedding watching YouTube videos on how to tie a tie or bustle your dress. Have the wedding party practice too!

5. Stay Hydrated and Keep Alcohol to a Minimum

Sometimes with the activity and excitement of the day, you can forget to hydrate. Drink plenty of water the morning of, especially if the wedding is during a hot month. Keep the alcohol to a minimum before the ceremony. The wedding day is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be plenty of opportunity, if you so wish, to drink and celebrate with the wedding party and guests. Pace yourselves. Also, use the bathroom before you start getting dressed.

Most importantly, just remember to breathe, have fun, and cherish this time!

Tips for Memorable Catering

When choosing a caterer, you’re probably going to be focused on a couple key factors; menu for the main meal and staffing to set up, serve and clean. However, they can provide so much more! Here are just some of the ways a caterer can help add special touches to the guest experience.

56 RICHMOND WEDDINGS MAGAZINE

1. Breakfast, Lunch or Snacks for the Wedding Party:

A caterer can deliver breakfast, lunch, and/or snacks for you and the wedding party while you’re getting ready. It’s one less detail to worry about on the busy day, and close friends and family can spend as many of those precious moments with you as possible instead of running out to find a meal for everyone. Not to mention it’s easy to forget to eat when you have the pre-wedding butterflies!

2. Pre-Ceremony Drinks and Snacks:

You don’t have to wait until after “I Do” for the party to start! Perhaps some of the guests will be arriving early and you’d like them to have something to munch on while they wait to be seated, or if having an outdoor summer ceremony, consider providing beverages to quench their thirst. Have the guests greeted with a glass of sparkling wine as they get ready to celebrate your love story.

RICHMONDWEDDINGS.COM 57

3. Signature Cocktails:

Often, the caterer will be overseeing the bar. Offering a signature cocktail (or 3!) helps cut down on lines at the bar. A caterer can help come up with a crowd-pleasing signature cocktail or mocktail that is both seasonal and personal.

4. Make Sure the Happy Couple is Fed:

Between posing for photos and spending time with each guest, it can be hard finding time to enjoy cocktail hour appetizers or even the main meal at the reception. Ask the caterer to set aside cocktail hour snacks, get you that signature cocktail and slice of cake you were looking forward to, or even pack to-go boxes to enjoy after the reception.

5. Create Custom Menu Items:

When choosing a caterer, they’ll provide menus of offerings depending on chosen service style. However, in the industry we recognize that every couple and event is different. Maybe you’d like to pay homage to a dish you had on your first date; or, you’d like to add a spicy sauce with a certain hors d’oeuvre to kick it up a notch. Don’t be shy, ask about adding personal touches to the menu!

6. Spruce Up the Reception with Food Presentation:

It’s obvious that details like rentals, decor, and florals are a big part of creating a beautiful reception. Attractive food presentation is another part of creating a memorable experience for guests. Passed appetizers can be served on individual spoons or in mini bowls for a fun bite. Caterers can incorporate flowers as garnishes on a display or can set up an eye-popping candy bar for dessert with sweets in your colors.

7. Partner with Other Vendors:

It’s always possible that you’re looking for something special that the caterer doesn’t provide. Not to fret! If you’re getting a cake from a local bakery, they’ll make sure it’s properly stored and displayed before it’s time to cut and serve to guests. Caterers will work with the venue, planner or day-of coordinator, and any other vendors to ensure every detail is taken care of - and probably feed them too!

First Room Look

There’s an age-old wedding tradition about couples not seeing each other on the wedding day until the ceremony. Over time, this tradition has evolved into a new one: The First Look. For the couple, with Mom and/or Dad, even Grandparents! They have grown in popularity and offer countless benefits. But the first looks don’t end there.

There’s a First Look that we think is just as important: The Room Reveal! This is an intimate time for both of you to see the wedding reception space before guests arrive. It is important to allow time to see the beautiful vision come to fruition. Couples put so much effort, thought process, and time into designing the space they have been envisioning for months. It is a moment filled with so much anticipation and excitement from the planning and design team, and from you!

Working with a planner and photographer/videographer, this is YOUR wow factor moment, and you certainly deserve it after all the hard work planning the big day. Some favorite moments to capture during this first look:

· Unique, personal details.

Amazing reactions – You may cry, smile as big as the sky, or even be in awe – let those emotions roll.

· The planner’s reaction – Their focus on your wedding is to create an entire day that's solely prioritized around your happiness, and they can't wait to enjoy the reveal to see your emotions: tears, laughs, and screams of pure joy.

· You may be able to have a private First Dance allowing a few more moments together before all the chaos.

You will need to schedule a room reveal into the timeline of the day. It should only take around 15 minutes, but you will not regret sparing the time. So pause, breathe, and let the beauty of the room sink in. Your reception space is ready to host your love story, and the magic is just beginning.

Try on your WEDDING RENTALS for size

Your wedding will feature many of the standard traditions. However, after the celebration is over, it's the unique, personal details that guests will remember. You would never walk into a wedding dress salon and pick off the rack without trying it on, right? Why skip that similar step when it comes to creating and designing your tables? Ask a rental coordinator if you can set up a “playdate” and try on those Pinterest-worthy pretties you’ve been eying! Most rental companies have a showroom with an amazing selection of beautiful samples for you to experience some hands-on fun!

One of the biggest decisions (after settling on the wedding location, of course) is how the room is going to come together. How many tables can we fit? Who is sitting where? What does our room design look like?

Here are a few table options to consider:

• Farm tables – extremely popular, no linens required, beautiful finishes

• Round tables – the most popular option with countless linen options available

• Rectangle tables – promote easy conversation among guests, smaller centerpieces

• Square tables – can accommodate larger centerpieces and more elbow room

• Kings tables – more modern and allow for more elaborate centerpieces

• Serpentine tables – bold design statement, more whimsical, require more space

Choosing the right linens for the tables can be tricky. They are a surprisingly important part of the overall décor that can make or break the tablescape's entire aesthetic. Selections range from:

• Standard Polyester – the most affordable option and available in over 100 colors

• Textures – such as woven linen, velvet, twill, satin, sequins, embroidered, soft crush, burlap, and cheesecloth (to name a few)

• Prints – florals, geometric, stripes, checkered, plaids, paisley, and more

Wedding chairs might not be the first thing that comes to mind when starting to plan your special day, but they’re an important detail, nonetheless. Not only do the chairs serve a functional purpose providing guests with a place to sit during the ceremony and reception, they also show up in a lot of wedding photos, which means you'll probably want chairs to complement the rest of the decor that you painstakingly selected. Here are some favorites:

• Folding Garden Chairs – basic and versatile; wood folding chairs are a good choice for any wedding style, especially if the theme

66 RICHMOND WEDDINGS MAGAZINE

leans more casual (even better: they tend to be more budgetfriendly than other chairs.)

• Chiavari Chairs – featuring an iconic silhouette; these chairs embody timeless elegance and charm. These versatile chairs are available in a variety of hues and finishes, making them a classic choice for designs in any season.

• X-Back Chairs – a bold silhouette, rustic charm, and design versatility make them a popular choice and will complement farmhouse, industrial, and formal aesthetics alike.

• Bentwood Chairs – another iconic, curved-back silhouette and round seat that gives a rustic charm-meets-bistro elegance that’s irresistible.

• Luxury Upholstered Chairs & Sofas – surprise and delight guests with unique seating to easily elevate your big day.

• Ghost Chairs – clear acrylic chairs are a beautiful way to add design and class to your event. Simple clean lines in the silhouette allow this chair to be used in a variety of event designs and creates an open and airy feel.

Surprise and delight guests with unique seating to easily elevate your big day.

Your Dream Dress

How to get the gown you really want

Perhaps you’ve dreamt of the perfect gown for that glide down the aisle since you were a little girl. Or maybe it’s a recent phenomenon now that there’s a rock residing on your left hand. Whatever the case may be, these visions are light and lovely. Regardless of your style, envisioning your dream wedding dress brings out your best self.

For that reason, you may have some pretty high standards when arriving to the appointment. No doubt you’ve formed a more concrete image of the gown. Maybe you want sleeves, or you’re set on an illusion back. Even a specific style might be a must-have for some. Unfortunately, you may get into that “perfect” gown and get a chiller instead of chills: the perfect gown doesn’t look perfect.

“Who can get me out of this nightmare? Maybe it’s my entourage of 12 bridesmaids?” The reality is, it’s best to leave them home.

Pro tip: only bring two to three of your closest allies to the appointment.

A good bridal stylist knows the boutique’s gowns and how they fit. Share your vision with the stylist, and they can point you in the right direction keeping style, body type, and budget in mind. Keep an open mind. Try on that gown you passed on twice – if the stylist pulled it, it just might pleasantly surprise you.

Then there’s that other terrifying topic: “What if the gown of my dreams has a price tag that makes me wake in a cold sweat?” Again, open and honest communication with the stylist is key. Be realistic about the budget.

Pro tip: remember to include alterations in the calculations.

You may really want to try that gown from your lock screen, but if it’s not in budget you’ll feel like screaming when you can’t have it. Show the stylist the gown or explain the features you like, and they can help find similar styles that fit the budget.

So don’t let that sea of white in a bridal boutique make you feel like you’re drowning. Don’t be afraid to try silhouettes and styles not previously considered, and make use of the stylist’s knowledge. You’re looking for a flattering fit and an expression of your style, not trying to make a specific gown work because it’s what you thought you wanted. Often a dream has an unexpected, although beautiful, ending.

Sharon Townsend is the Owner/Manager of Tiffanys Bridal, a Richmond tradition since 1969. She purchased her own gown from Tiffanys, and after 20 years of freelance wedding planning, she made the boutique her own in 2008. DETAIL PHOTOS & 10 Items to Include

Weddings are all about the details. From accessories to flowers, invitations and décor, the whole day begins with details! The elements you select tell the story of you, your spouse, and your wedding. Often photographers will start the day documenting these items. Here are ten to provide the photographer.

1. Loose Florals

Ask the florist for loose florals. They will often have extra clippings after making the arrangements and can provide a few additional ones for little to no cost.

2. All 3 Rings

Have the rings cleaned before the wedding! Keep the engagement ring and wedding bands in a secure box or container.

3. Shoes

Shoes make a great addition to these shots. Include both yours and your spouse’s.

4. Bouquet and Boutonniere

Flowers and greenery always enhance detail photos!

5. Invitation Suite

If possible, include two copies of your invitation suite: envelope, save the date, invitation, RSVP card, wax seals, packaging, custom or vintage stamps, and any special calligraphy used.

6. Jewelry and Accessories

Include all jewelry or accessories the two of you plan to wear, such as a necklace, earrings, watch, bracelet, cufflinks, veil, hairpiece, special ring, tie, bowtie, etc.

7. Vow Books

Vow books make a fantastic background for ring photos, especially when the vows are handwritten.

8. Heirloom Items

Honor your family by including heirloom items that have been passed down from generations or anything that holds significance to you and your family. Often this is where the borrowed & blue comes into play.

9. Other Items of Significance

Using ribbon on your invitation suite? Giving a special favor to your guests? Make sure to include any unique items or accents that will be present throughout the day.

10. Gowns, Suits, or Custom Clothing

Have your dress or suit photographed before you get dressed. If there will be a second outfit, custom jacket, or piece of clothing planned for a different part of the day, make sure to have it documented!

To ensure the day starts off right, collect all detail items you would like photographed and put them in a bag or box ready for the photographer to grab.

3 UNIQUE WAYS to Capture Groups at Your Wedding

Group photos are important at a wedding, however sometimes they can be tricky to coordinate. Don’t stress over the ideal method for capturing everyone, here are three alternative choices you might not have considered!

1.

After the ceremony, take a group photo.

Immediately following the ceremony, when guests are already in one location, have the officiant announce that a group photo is about to take place. Have everyone stay seated or have them stand where they are. The photographer can take the picture from the altar with you in the middle of the aisle. Alternatively, if you are in an enclosed space that doesn’t allow for enough room, have the guests exit the ceremony space, gather outside, and take a group photo with you front and center. Afterwards, release guests to cocktail hour and have immediate family and the wedding party stay behind for formal portraits.

2. Instruct guests to come to you.

Instead of going around to each table and taking a photo with guests, (which usually results in unfavorable lighting and awkward angles), have them come to you! Set up two chairs on the dance floor (or stand) and arrange for the DJ to announce each table one at a time to come to the floor for a picture. This allows the photographer to set the same lighting ensuring you get a pic with everyone well-lit and in focus. If you want to add a fun twist, pick a song, and turn it into a game. Try to get all group photos done before the song ends. For the last pic have everyone come up for a large group photo and then immediately afterwards, announce that dancing is now open since all guests will already be on the dance floor.

RICHMONDWEDDINGS.COM 91

3. Make a pitstop on the way to your meal.

When tables are called up to get food, have them stop by for a quick photo op. Either have guests gather around the sweetheart table or create a fun photo wall where you can capture a quick pic with guests.

No matter how you choose to capture group photos, make sure to let the photographer and DJ know what the plan is so they can assist with gathering everyone.

DRAB TO FAB:

How to infuse colors into your big day

Kylie Hinson Photography
96 RICHMOND WEDDINGS MAGAZINE
Kylie Hinson Photography Moy Dumadag Photography

Five easy ways to incorporate your colors into the wedding reception:

1. Flowers

With the help of an educated florist, it’s super easy to choose a flower that will accentuate the colors you have chosen for your wedding day.

PRO TIP: Wedding florists are extremely visual. Instead of saying you have chosen blue, green, and silver as the color theme, consider providing a palette so they can understand your vision.

2. Lighting

Lighting is so “on trend” right now! And it’s a great way to apply colors to walls, ceilings, and floors for your chosen reception venue. Some of the new lights can do upwards of 200+ colors so choosing the right one should be easy! Be sure to hire someone that knows all the nuances of each venue.

3. Linens

Tablecloths, napkins, chair covers, runners, and overlays. With linens, there are quite a few ways to present your colors that are centered around guest tables and chairs. Typically, a planner and venue can help decide on the perfect combination of colored linens for the reception.

PRO TIP: Choosing that perfect red satin napkin could be an easy choice! But consider this: if you have 100 guests, there will be 100 red satin napkins in the reception setup. If you also have red lighting, red runners, and red florals…you run the chance on overindulging with one color. Using whites, ivories, and other neutral colors for tablecloths with smaller color accents keeps guest tables beautiful and timeless.

4. Table Numbers

Gone are the days of being forced to use the old black and white table numbers! You can easily find hundreds of ways to number guest tables using the chosen color scheme. A simple search on Pinterest will produce lots of options to choose from.

PRO TIP: If you have a favorite table number option, and it’s not very big, consider raising the number higher making it easier to see.

5. China Patterns and Chargers

Most china patterns will come in a beautiful ivory or white and will look good on the tables. You can choose a colored charger to go under the first course’s plate to add a little pop of color.

PRO TIP: Chargers can be clear with colored beading around the edge providing just a small bit of color, or they can be solid gold, silver, or red. Remember, a small colored item when used for a lot of guests in one room may produce more of that color then you anticipated. Always ask your planner or venue to provide a table “mockup” so you can see exactly what it will look like.

So, there you have it, 5 easy ways to incorporate your color scheme! If this starts to stress you out, just remember to keep it simple. Stick with 2-5 colors using them consistently and smartly. This will create a seamless color pattern throughout the day and will make sure your wedding day images are amazing!

Samantha and Jonathan share a lot of the same passions, but the ones that brought them together was the love of art and music. A poster caught Samantha’s eye at a concert when she was told that Jonathan was the artist. After a few conversations, they continued as friends. It wasn’t until Jonathan moved to Northern Virginia where the two hit it off and started dating!

Jonathan and Samantha embarked on a trip to Colorado in 2021. On the second half of the trip, they went to Rocky Mountain National Park with friends who lived in the area. On one of the scenic lookouts, Jonathan proposed. Samantha was completely taken by surprise.

When it came to the wedding, the idea was for it to feel serendipitous. They were drawn to Mankin Mansion for their reception due to the lush grounds. The vision was brought to life by adding greenery and hanging baskets from the ceiling, while implementing some favorite pieces from their living room to really make it feel like home. Shared interests were incorporated throughout the day to let personality shine through. Books like Lord of the Rings, Calvin and Hobbes, and drawings from Jonathan himself were scattered throughout. Everybody who knows them knows their love of Star Wars, so obviously lightsabers and masks were props for the photo booth! The day was meant to feel classy but with a lot of nods to what they truly love as a couple.

After saying I do’s, the celebration began with a live band performance and brought the night to a close with a private last dance. The last dance was Samantha and Jonathan’s favorite moment of the day. “The intimate moment after all the chaos and fun really rounded out the night.”

When asked their best piece of advice, they answered “Going into a wedding, just be prepared to go with the flow and not stress about things changing last minute. It might happen but it will end up beautiful. Nobody will notice the little things that go wrong. Live in the moment and know it will be perfect no matter what happens!”

ZOHRA

Tinder was Zohra and Jon’s ultimate matchmaker. The two connected online before meeting in person in Carytown for their first official date. After two years of dating, Jon knew he had met the one. He planned the proposal to take place on his 45th birthday. “He said we had to get dressed up and that my mom and sister were coming over to take photos of us before we went out.”

While taking pictures at their home in front of the Christmas tree, Jon dropped to one knee. After joyful tears, they embarked to celebrate over dinner and dancing. Zohra had previously mentioned how she would love to learn the tango, so he arranged to take their first lesson after dinner on this special night. Though the two never learned the dance before the wedding day, they had a lot of fun trying!

After choosing Bartizan, they came across a post on social media that was full of bright colors. While this wasn’t what Zohra had ever imagined for her wedding, she fell in love with the untraditional and chose to fill their big day with a vibrant palette. Being from Afghanistan, Zohra is used to weddings with hundreds of people. Jon, however, comes from a smaller family in Iowa and hasn’t been to many weddings in his life. They kept the guest list small and incorporated both cultures into their evening.

The couple decided against following many traditions. On the wedding day, Zohra and Jon got ready together at home. Upon arrival to the venue, Zohra walked down the aisle by herself while a friend sang the slow version of a favorite song, Feel So Close by Calvin Harris. After the happy hour, Jon and Zohra entered to a traditional Afghan song, and Zohra’s uncle put henna on their hands while the DJ played the Red Hot Chili Peppers song Hard to Concentrate in the background. (This was a TOTAL surprise, as she was expecting an Afghan song to be played during the traditional Afghan parts.) The couple shares, “It was absolutely perfect for us! It was one of the favorite parts of the night!

Keyanna and Markus first crossed paths in 2004, when Keyanna’s family members introduced them. They talked once or twice on the phone before meeting up at a high school basketball game. That was the night the pair locked eyes and fell in love. After a few years, their first child was born in 2007.

The two embarked on different paths as life would have it, but their love for each other never wavered. In 2015, Keyanna and Markus wanted to give their relationship another try. Keyanna shares, “If two hearts are meant to be, no matter how long it takes, how far they go or how long it seems, love will bring them together to share a life forever!”

Once Markus acquired the ring, he was waiting for the perfect moment to propose. On Valentine’s Day, Keyanna left gifts and a note that expressed her love for him. He knew this was the day. He arrived at her place of work with flowers, candy, and a few gifts. The last gift she opened was a Pandora box with a charm that read “Will YOU marry ME?”

When planning for the wedding the aim was for it to feel royal and elegant. Royalty was a focal point throughout the day. As Keyana shares “that’s the way my husband and I view each other. As if I’m his Queen and he is my King.” Family surrounded them throughout the entire day. Keyanna even had one brother walk her down the aisle and the other brother officiate. The venue was carefully chosen to give an unforgettable experience. The couple has come a long way since being high school sweethearts, and finally celebrated making a Christian commitment before God and their family.

Keyanna & Markus want everybody to know, … “no day is perfect! Things may happen that are out of your control. But with the love of your forever partner, God, and supportive family and friends, your day will turn out beautiful. Always try to enjoy every moment, even the small things. Communication is the most important factor in any relationship.”

Ceanna and Faiz have been friends since high school and by chance went to college together at James Madison University. It was during their senior year when they decided to make things official.

Ever since the two started dating, summertime became synonymous with trips to Faiz’s family’s beach house. Each year they looked forward to summers surrounded by their closest friends. Ceanna shares, “We took many impromptu trips to our favorite bars, country concerts on the beach and long days roasting in the sun. After many summers, this became our annual tradition with friends.”

Little did Ceanna know the summer of 2022 would hold an unforgettable surprise. Faiz, with the help of their closest friends, orchestrated a surprise plan to propose. As they all gathered outside for their customary “golden hour” pictures as the sun was setting, they walked down to the beach where Faiz proposed! The proposal was followed by many celebrations with friends and family.

Ceanna always knew she wanted to get married at her parents’ house where she grew up. They had a private nuptial ceremony the week prior, unbeknownst to their guests, which allowed them to truly absorb every moment of their ceremony. As big fans of all things organic and natural, they decided to implement earthy neutral tones throughout their big day. The wedding being outdoors played into the theme, and the low lighting from candles provided “the coziest vibe as the rain came down outside of the tent.”

They wanted a romantic and sophisticated atmosphere, and their wedding did not disappoint. The goal was to create an experience when guests walked into the tent by adding drapery, unique lighting, chandeliers, and decor. It truly felt like you were entering another world. Ceanna and Faiz want you to know, “When you start to plan your wedding, don’t let other people pressure you into making certain decisions. If it becomes too stressful, take a step back and think about simplifying your plans!”

TANNER November 11, 2023 REBECCA

Rebecca and Tanner had their first date on a hotel rooftop in Washington DC for what was supposed to be “just drinks”. The conversation kept flowing, which made drinks turn into dinner, then dinner turned into a trip to a piano jazz bar until the bar closed! 5 years and 10 months later, Tanner asked Rebecca to meet him for drinks to meet his boss for the first time. When Rebecca arrived, she saw Tanner sitting alone with two drinks on the table and undone napkins. To solve her confusion, Tanner quickly said his boss was in the bathroom. After she settled in her seat, Tanner dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him.

The wedding venue the couple chose is co-owned and operated by the bride’s father. It was special to get married at a location that holds much meaning to the family. The weekend included a golf tournament, rehearsal dinner, welcome party, and the wedding, all hosted at The Estate at Independence.

About one month prior to the wedding, Rebecca and Tanner drove down from DC to bury the bourbon at 5 am. This tradition was extra special to the couple as they buried it at the base of a tree planted in honor of the bride’s late grandmother, knowing she would provide them a little extra luck on their wedding day.

The day before the wedding, a golf tournament was hosted in honor of the groom, the “Tan-Man Invitational” or TMI. The golf course flags were replaced with flags with outlines of the groom’s face on them and the entire staff wore hats with “TMI” on them and T-shirts with his face logo on them too!

The ceremony was decorated with unstructured florals and natural wood and the band had the crowd piled on the dance floor all night long. This made the wedding exactly how the couple wanted it, timeless, fun, rustic, romantic, and magical.

FEATURED WEDDING

Itall began when one of Rachel’s high school friends begged her to tag along to a fall ball game one September evening. After some convincing, Rachel caved and happened to interact with a boy she had seen around but never actually talked to. They hit it off immediately, and Cross wasted no time messaging Rachel that night. After texting back and forth, an infamous first date at Waffle House, and hours of talking, the rest was history.

As high school sweethearts, the time came to go off to college. Cross left for Virginia Tech and Rachel for James Madison University. While the distance was hard, and as most people said ‘impossible’, they were determined to make it work. A little under one year away from their graduation, Cross decided to take Rachel on a surprise date. As usual, Rachel wasn’t ready on time, and Cross seemed more in a rush than normal. They arrived at a spot where they used to have picnics and fish. When Rachel turned the corner, she was met with their dog, Chaco, running up to her with a sign that read, “Mom, will you marry dad?”. Rachel quickly turned around, saw Cross on one knee, and fell to the ground in tears.

Wedding planning in college was exactly what you’d expect, a stressful mess. They went from planning a destination wedding to wanting to elope, to finally landing on their dream venue. Their wedding had accents of Old Hollywood with a timeless black and white color scheme. They danced the night away surrounded by close friends and family before running outside and getting whisked away to their happily ever after.

A note from the couple: “We honestly couldn’t have done it without the help of our parents. Everything was perfect - and even the smallest details were executed beautifully. We couldn’t imagine a better day.”

They were destined. Born on opposite coasts, simultaneously moving to the other’s home state, Hailey & Cameron grew up 3,000 miles apart...until meeting at JMU. They bonded over East and West Coast “isms,” favorite poems, and summer trips to the James River. After a whirlwind summer, on the 21st of September, Hailey asked Cameron to be her boyfriend...cue the song, “Do you Remember...?”

Fast-forward to Hailey’s brother and sisterin-law, Aaron & Ginny’s gorgeous wedding in December, and the family vacation that followed. Nicknamed their “Family-moon,” Hailey’s family cruised to Central America where the family arranged for a surprise excursion to a sloth sanctuary in Honduras, a dream come true for Hailey. Cameron dropped to one knee as her family affectionately watched Hailey hold Snow White the sloth. “Hailey Marie Ramirez, will you do me the honor of becoming Mrs. Foster-Parker?” Through streaming tears, Hailey squeaked, “Yes! Yes!” as Cam slid his grandmother’s 100-year-old art deco engagement ring onto Hailey’s finger.

Married on their 7th anniversary, Hailey & Cam’s wedding day was nothing short of magical. Hosted at Hailey’s family home, Mankin Mansion Estate, with the ceremony held in the English gardens and beautifully officiated by Cameron’s grandmother. Another special treat was Cam’s maternal grandmother, lovingly known as “Dog Toe,” who was the couple’s flower lady. They celebrated their union with three Celtic traditions; saining to bless the space, handfasting to signify their bond, and an oathing stone to represent their connection with ancestors and uniting their two families as one.

Their reception followed, with a mix of lush, earthy, and eclectic tones, vintage furniture, lawn games, and candlelight throughout the grounds. After a surprise singing toast by the bride’s parents and a pie in the face, Hailey & Cameron danced the night away with family and friends from all over the continent. They continued the celebration with a bespoke afterparty DJ’d by Hailey’s father. Cracker Barrel provided the late-night nosh before the newlyweds were whisked away in the family’s Aston Martin. Hailey & Cameron have since settled into their cottage on the Mankin property which they lovingly share with their two cats, Crysta & Jonesy.

TRENDS IN Wedding Stationery

Wedding invitations and stationery are ever evolving. While the traditional wedding invitation will likely never go out of style, new applications, printing styles, colors, and embellishments are allowing couples to make their invitations unique to them, their lifestyle, and the look and feel they want to convey.

Color

Color is exploding in wedding papers. Although white, ecru, and gold will always be a staple, other colors are making appearances and sometimes stealing the show. Soft muted hues in blush, blues, and soft sages are a favorite. These work with the most formal of ceremonies and are great for more casual events, those with boho overtones as well as those with a farmhouse feel. Deep jewel tones are also making waves on paper. Emerald, rich ruby, amethyst, and sapphire are gorgeous to use in fall and winter. Earth tones such as terra cotta, peach, and sage green give a summer or autumn wedding a pop of seasonal color.

Crest

The ultimate in personalization is a custom created watercolor or hand drawn crest. Crests are customized logos that symbolize a couple’s journey

towards the altar. Your initials, where you met, your pets, favorite hobbies or pastimes, and colors of the wedding are favorites to include in a custom crest. No two are ever the same, and it highlights the uniqueness of each couple and their story. Once the crest is created you can use it throughout the wedding invitation suite as well as day-of items like seating charts, menus, napkins, and cups.

Typography

Typography is a huge design element, whether it is calligraphy with large loopy script or super modern block lettering with lots of white space. Typography is the most important of invitation design elements. Some of the most popular trends with typography are hand painted scripts and calligraphy. Depending on the style, invitations can have a formal look, or fun and casual. Minimalist typography is also a popular choice for couples that prefer a clean and modern appearance.

Eco Friendly

Some couples make their earth conscious statement through stationery that is green and helps reduce their carbon footprint. Some of the most popular sustainable products used in wedding stationery are plantable paper with non-invasive wildflowers and herbs that guests can put in the ground after the big day. Recycled paper and vegetable dyes are another way to make your invitations a little kinder to Mother Nature.

Embellishments

Some couples choose to elevate their invitations with add-ons such as wax seals, vellum wraps, ribbons, and belly bands. Wax seals, an old-world stationery embellishment is having a resurgence in modern wedding invitations. Wax is melted onto the invitation or envelope and then imprinted with a design in the hot wax.

120 RICHMOND WEDDINGS MAGAZINE
Juliana Mary Photography

Not interested in melting wax? You can get the same look with premade wax seals that have adhesive backs. Wax seals are an easy and fairly inexpensive way to up the wow factor for your invitations. Vellum is a trendy add-on with translucent stock that is used in wraps around an invitation, belly bands, and even envelopes. Vellum can also be printed and gives a very layered look to invitations. Ribbons, twine, and thread tied in bows or knots or combined with a wax seal, not only add a pretty finish to the invitation but also serves to keep all the pieces of the suite together in a neat package.

Your invitation sets the stage for the wedding and all that your guests will experience with you, make it one they would not say no to!

· What does your Foundation look like?

What do you appreciate most about your fiancé and what similarities or differences do you share as a couple? Often, opposites attract and that is because you see something unique in your partner that you admire or are curious about. Was their upbringing, or has their life journey been very different or similar to yours? Sharing those ideas with each other can help you move toward a stronger foundation and lifelong marriage.

· Will you follow a map of life or chart your own course?

Are you a rule follower or someone who pushes the boundaries? Looking at these characteristics will help you discuss as a couple what your ‘roadmap’ looks like. Be prepared for detours and be flexible when it comes to understanding and listening to how you each will handle challenges and obstacles in life. You will not be the same person in a year, or many years from now, that you are today; we all change and learning how to journey along the course together will bring fulfillment in marriage and life.

· What goals do you have as an individual and as a couple?

Treat marriage like the best job you could ever imagine. Set goals, challenge yourself and each other to be the best you can be, carefully hold each other accountable and have trusted friends, mentors, colleagues, and coaches who you can turn to for additional support.

· Plan for pit stops and maintenance in the marriage.

You can’t run on empty and get to your destination of a lifetime together. Make time, monthly at least, for fun dates and an annual trip or vacation together (just the two of you). Read marriage & relationship books or devotionals together to keep learning and growing as a couple. Couples that plan for play and learning together are more satisfied with their marriages and are healthier too!

Hair and Makeup Trial Runs

Your wedding day beauty is something that doesn't have to be intimidating. A trial run can help ease your mind for the big day!

From natural, all the way to the super glam, it’s a great way to test out different looks and to make sure you’re comfortable with your choice before the wedding day photos are frozen in time for forever! Here are a few of the top questions:

When to book?

It is recommend to book 1-2 months prior to the wedding day. By this time your hair will be closer to its eventual length if you're letting it grow out. This goes for skin prep as well if you are working on a new routine.

Is it required?

Check with the hair and makeup team. Some require a trial, some do not. Also, check to see if a trial is included or if there is a separate fee.

How should I prepare for this appointment?

It is suggested to come with clean, dry hair, and no makeup. You can perform a typical moisturizer/skincare routine but come with a clean face to start. Bring along wedding day jewelry, veil, and headpieces if you want to see a finished look!

How does a pro help decide which style looks best?

Send a photo of yourself to the stylist, as well as inspiration images. This helps them guide you if there’s any additional prep needed. (For example, you want a smooth style, but your hair is naturally curly.)

The trial run is a great way to meet the artist and offers a more relaxed way to try

all the things!! Don’t be afraid to ask to try multiple styles.

Building Stronger Relationships for the Common Wealth

In all the excitement of wedding planning, no one wants to think about divorce. Trust us, it’s not something we want to talk about in a wedding magazine either! But with roughly 50% of marriages ending in divorce or separation, it’s something we HAVE to talk about!

After all, getting married is far more than planning a celebration — it’s planning the rest of your life..

Now what if we told you that there is something you can do to cut down your chances of experiencing divorce by 30%? That’s a no-brainer! Studies show that attending premarital counseling as a couple will decrease your chances of divorce by a third.

This is where Rebecca Blackwell and the team Marriage & Relationship Coaches come in. Marriage Coaching & Training RVA is a preferred partner of the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening communities through healthy relationships, marriages, fathers, and families. Whether you’re single, engaged, married, or in a long-term relationship, there are relationship coaching and engaging programs that provide the practical tools for building strong and fulfilling relationships.

126 RICHMOND WEDDINGS MAGAZINE
“This is not your old-fashioned premarital counseling. It’s your opportunity to connect and talk about what WILL happen, what COULD happen, and the good and the bad of being married.”

After chatting with Rebecca about premarital coaching and the other incredible programs FFVA has to offer, we were ready to sign up for a session ourselves! With 15 years of experience working with couples, certifications in several Marriage and Relationship Coaching programs, and her own 27 years of marriage, Rebecca has plenty of insight to share into what it takes to build strong foundations. She also has a clear passion for helping others form marriages just like the ones she grew up admiring.

“My grandma always said, ‘Don’t let the sun go down on your anger,’” Rebecca remembers. As she watched her parents navigate 58 years of marriage, Rebecca learned the importance of family, faith, and solid communication. Though her father has passed, he left Rebecca with strong roots, and she continues to honor his legacy by finding the silver lining of every situation and helping others develop those same strong roots.

“This is not your old-fashioned premarital counseling,” Rebecca says. “It’s your opportunity to connect and talk about what WILL happen, what COULD happen, and the good and the bad of being married.” Some of the topics Rebecca covers in her sessions include communication, problem solving, sex and affection, finances, children and parenting, spiritual beliefs, family, and friends.

Not sure if premarital counseling is something you need? Ask yourself if you and your partner have had successful conversations about a few things::

· How soon do you want children?

How many children do you want?

How will both families be involved in the marriage?

How would you handle job loss or a sudden move?

What type of roles and responsibilities do you see yourself taking around the house?

If you haven’t discussed at least a few of these topics as a couple, you may not be setting up a strong foundation for your future! Your sessions with Rebecca will be a safe space to share your feelings, make plans, and grow as a couple. Those big topics seem a lot less scary when someone is guiding the discussion!

Rebecca and the team at FFVA also counsel couples who are getting remarried and bringing two families together. Rebecca will help you learn from your previous relationships to create clearer communication and stronger foundations than ever before.

Once you’re a part of FFVA, you’re a part of their community for even more of life’s big events. After the big day, you can join The Ring of Relationships, a monthly subscription service offering quarterly coaching, annual assessments, discounts on date nights, and more.

And speaking of date nights, FFVA hosts incredible events for couples! You’ll be invited to dances, movie nights, glamping trips, paint parties, and more! Whether you’re looking to connect with other couples or make memories together, you’ll learn a little bit and have a whole lot of fun. You can register for date nights at www. vadad.org/relationships.

And they don’t stop there! Strong relationships mean strong husbands, dads, and coparents too. FFVA also hosts New Dad 101 for men becoming fathers too! This virtual half day event is hosted for dads, by dads. A veteran dad will talk you through what to expect as a new parent and what to expect throughout labor, delivery, and beyond. Three topics lead the fatherhood classes: No perfect dads, no dumb questions, and the most important relationship you can teach your kids is the one with their mother. You can also register for this and other fatherhood programs at www.vadad.org.

The best part? Four premarital coaching sessions with FFVA are ONLY $150! That’s a steal of a deal when you remember that the simple act of participating in premarital counseling means you’re 30% less likely to experience divorce. PLUS, mentioning RVA Weddings gives you $25 off, AND you can give these sessions as a gift! Who needs another set of mixing bowls when you give the gift of a strong relationship foundation?

FLAWLESS WEDDING MAKEUP STARTS WITH Healthy Skin!

It’s no secret that on wedding days, people want to look their absolute best. As a bride, groom, or parent, you’ve probably been dreaming of this monumental day for years. You’ll be seeing all of your closest family and friends, and the photos and videos will last a lifetime. That’s why there couldn’t be a better time to tackle those little insecurities you’ve been carrying around!

That’s where Dr. Agnihotri comes in. Dr. A, as he’s known around his office, is an expert on the face. With an extensive and impressive background in oral and maxillofacial surgery, his specialty is anything from the neck up. But before you start picturing invasive and intense surgeries that leave people looking plastic, Dr. Agnihotri is striving for the opposite. He explains, “We want to enhance your natural beauty with minor adjustments.” In fact, if Dr. A doesn’t think a procedure is right for a patient, he won't do it. “We’ll work together to create a treatment plan that is best. If we can’t achieve a safe, natural-looking result, I won’t do it. I have to be able to sleep at night!”

For the average person, seeing a doctor and undergoing a new procedure can be intimidating, but don’t worry — Dr. Agnihotri and his team make it easy. First, you’ll head to their pristine Short Pump office for a simple consultation. Dr. A will chat through what your goals are and the look you want to achieve while explaining the different steps he can take to get you there. Then he’ll create a personalized treatment plan that works for your timeline.

So, if your wedding date is your deadline, when should you start working with Dr. Agnihotri?

For the more surgical options like Eyelid Rejuvenation, Laser Skin Resurfacing, or a Face Lift, the process should begin a year to six months out. The earlier the better! The same goes for filler treatments like Botox and Dysport which are injections to reduce fine lines. “Six months is protocol so we can develop

a treatment plan. If you were training for a 5k, you wouldn’t wear brand new sneakers the day of,” Dr. Agnihotri explains.

The recent trend of having glowing, bright skin is not lost on Dr. Agnihotri. That’s why his top recommendation for wedding day beauty is a HydraFacial. With this non-invasive skin-clearing procedure, you’ll leave with glowing skin in just 30 minutes. “You get that healthy, dewy glow while your skin is infused with antioxidants, leaving your face hydrated and refreshed,” Dr. A says. Since it’s non-invasive, you can treat yourself to a HydraFacial the week of the wedding because after all, flawless wedding makeup starts with beautiful, healthy skin! Don’t wait to start your journey to a beautiful complexion! Q& A WITH KAYLEE, A RECENT BRIDE

Q. What made you want to take control of your skin?

A. My acne started in my younger teens which led to unbearable scarring. I didn’t know how to take care of my skin. I felt like I couldn't leave the house without piles of makeup on. It was time for me to finally do something about it, and I’m so glad that I did because I barely wear makeup anymore. I feel so much more confident and comfortable in my skin!

Q. How far in advance did you start treatment? What treatments did you receive?

A. I started treatment less than a year before my wedding, which I didn’t think was enough time. Dr. Agnihotri assured me that this was enough time to achieve my goals, and we got started a month later. I had two Hydrafacials and then two microneedling sessions. I also received Obagi® Rebalancing Cream, their medical grade skin care products.

Q. How fast did you notice the results?

A. After the first microneedling session, it was really kind of crazy. My husband, (fiancé at the time) said, “Oh my gosh, your skin looks so different. Are you wearing makeup?” And I said “No!”

Q. What was your experience like with Dr. Agnihotri and the ACS Team?

A. I cannot say enough good things about them. Dr. Agnihotri didn’t rush; he took the time to talk to me before each procedure and made me feel really calm throughout the whole process. There aren't a lot of people like him, it’s so refreshing. I can’t pinpoint exactly what to say about the team because everything sounds right. They made me feel so good, and their location is very convenient.

Q. Is the investment worth it?

A. Oh my gosh, yes! Also, I now know how to use skin care products properly because of Dr. Agnihotri.

Q. Anything else you want to mention or any advice for current/future brides?

A. Skin care is extremely important. You can put as much makeup on your face as you want, but at the end of the day, clear, beautiful skin is so worth it. Take care of your skin. Go have this experience, thank me later.

A Guide to Planning the PERFECT HONEYMOON

Crafting the ideal honeymoon would be a breeze if you were acquainted with every resort and destination and if endless free time was at your disposal. However, the internet is flooded with misinformation, and numerous bloggers are receiving compensation for penning reviews about resorts.

Selecting the perfect destination isn't as straightforward as picking a resort solely based on online pictures and the best price; numerous pitfalls could arise. In the quest for a flawless honeymoon, everyone appreciates valuable connections and a helping hand.

Dream up a honeymoon vibe.

Before getting into the details, let's daydream about the ultimate honeymoon! Chat about wishes, likes, and the general vibe you're after. Whether a tropical getaway, diving into cultural wonders, or wanting an adrenaline-fueled escapade, syncing up your daydreams will be the kickoff to an unforgettable adventure! Either way, don’t forget to add a touch of romance to the honeymoon!

Start by figuring out a honeymoon wish list; then shape the budget accordingly. Opting for destinations with a solid all-inclusive scene often means getting more bang for your buck. If you want non-stop exploration, factor in considerations like budget, travel duration, and the preferred vibe—be it tropical, urban, or adventurous.

What do you want to invest in the honeymoon?

Establish a budget that accommodates a dream honeymoon without causing financial stress. Consider all expenses, including flights, accommodations, activities, meals, and unexpected costs. A clear budget will guide decisions and allow you to indulge in experiences within your means. Ensure the budget aligns with the vision!

Select the ultimate destination.

Selecting the right destination is pivotal. Factors such as the season, climate, and shared interests should influence decisions. Whether it's the romantic allure of Paris, the pristine beaches of the Caribbean, or

the cultural richness of Europe, pick a location that resonates with both of you. Opt for what suits you best; don't rely solely on friends and social media crowdsourcing. Your travel style is unique.

To go all-inclusive or not?

Are the plans to thoroughly explore the destination, or perhaps enjoy one or two tours? If leaning towards a resort-centric experience with numerous on-site activities and dining options, then an all-inclusive setup might be the perfect fit. All-inclusive resorts simplify the planning process by bundling accommodations, meals, and activities into one package. This option allows you to relax and enjoy each other’s company without constantly checking the budget. However, if you’re inclined to venture out and explore daily, opting for a non-all-inclusive resort may be more suitable.

RECEPTION SITE When choosing a venue, be clear on what is included in the rental fee such as chairs, tables, linens, etc. Plan on 50% of your budget going toward the reception because this will include your venue fee, food, beverage, rentals, etc.

The Estate at Independence includes all these items as well as an onsite coordinator.

The Estate at Independence offers many breathtaking spots for portraits, ceremonies and receptions including these.

BUDGET ACTUAL NOTES

CATERER/FOOD/BEVERAGE

Before you sign the contract, be sure to look at the food and beverage minimums. If you are looking to stay within a budget, limit the bar to beer and wine or add a little bit of personality with a signature beverage!

The Estate at Independence has lowered its rental fee to help ensure you have a fantastic meal at your reception!

DJ VS. BAND

When making this decision, know the rules of the venue and the space available. A 5-piece band is going to need more space than a DJ! Many places, like The Estate at Independence, welcome both.

138 RICHMOND WEDDINGS MAGAZINE

FLOWERS Some ceremony sites speak for themselves and don’t need an abundance of flowers. You can then focus your floral budget on the reception space and really WOW your guests.

GRATUITIES For your caterer or food service, gratuity is always added into your bottom line, but you do have other wonderful vendors on the day of that you can treat. Keep this in mind when thinking about your budget. Be sure to arrange envelopes with each vendor’s name on it so your planner can easily handle it on the wedding day.

ACCOMMODATIONS Venues will often work with nearby hotels who can offer room block pricing.

Other venues such as The Estate at Independence offer custom onsite lodging for the newlyweds or family and the bridal party.

Information provided by Total Wine. Learn more at www.totalwine.com

Let’s do the math

Use these simple formulas to determine roughly how many bottles you’ll need for your reception.

WINE:

A x B x 0.5 ÷ 5 = 750ml Bottles Needed

BEER:

A x B x 0.3 = 12 oz. Servings of Beer Needed

SPIRITS:

A x B x 0.2 ÷ 15 = 750ml Bottles Needed

Not serving cocktails?

Plan on a mix of 60 percent wine, 40 percent beer.

WINE:

A x B x 0.6 ÷ 5 =

750ml Bottles Needed

A = Number of Guests

B = Drinks required per guest

Based on length of party

1 hour = 2 drinks

2 hours = 3 drinks

3 hours = 4 drinks

4 hours = 5 drinks

5 hours = 6 drinks

BEER:

A x B x 0.4 = 12 oz. Servings of Beer Needed
