Ace Overclocker, HiCookie, makes New Indian CPU-Z OC Record in Mumbai Saturday, December 20, 2014, was a big day for India’s hardcore PC enthusiasts and power users who had gathered in Mumbai, as they were witness to a new Indian record being made in CPU-Z Overclocking (OC), by none other than HiCookie, holder and breaker of multiple OC world records. OC is the practice of pushing a PC component to function faster than the manufactured clock frequency. This calls for a lot of practice, upgraded skills, dedication, and of course, a deep passion for the activity. HiCookie demonstrating his fabled OC skills was the highlight of the PC enthusiasts’ meet, organised jointly by Gigabyte Technology (India) Pvt. Ltd. (Motherboard Business Unit), CoolerMaster India, and Adata India – all Taiwan-based companies and world leaders in their respective spheres of PC hardware. Egged on by the Power Users present, HiCookie managed to achieve a CPU-Z

benchmark of 6.37 GHz, a new Indian record in this category. Also, DDR4 RAM was overclocked to 3060MHz. The record was made by HiCookie, using the Gigabyte GA-X99-SOC Force motherboard with an Intel Core i7-5960X Processor Extreme Edition, with liquid nitrogen (LN2) for cooling. The other crucial components included ADATA XPG Z1 DDR4-2400 16GB RAM Kit, ADATA

XPG SX910 512GB SSD, and Cooler Master V1200 Platinum PSU. GA-X99SOC Force, based on the Intel X99 Express chipset, is a part of the GIGABYTE X99 Overclocking series motherboards. Though it is specially designed for Overclocking, it retains all the vital features of any Gigabyte X99 motherboard, such as SATA Express, 4 way CrossfireX/SLI, m2 sata and AMP-UP audio, along with a wide range of other mainstream attributes. Commenting on the Overclocking session, Suvojit Banerjee, who had come all the way from Kolkata to be a part of the event, said, “Overclocking is my passion and I consistently try to improve myself by practising and enhancing my knowledge. Watching HiCookie in action was like finding a treasure trove full of tricks and tips to improve my OC skills.” The event also featured an Overclocking competition among Power Users.

T

he smartphone market has been showing great promise worldwide and the trend has reflected in the Indian market as well. India is expected to be one of the biggest smartphone market in terms of volume in the coming years. In India, the smartphone market holds tremendous potential as a section of the mobile phone owners in India have still not transitioned to smartphone usage. So the scope of the market reach for smartphones in India is colossal because of this unexplored market. While Nokia had dominated the initial mobile revolution in India, the smartphone phase witnessed the growing presence of other global brands like Samsung, Motorola, Sony and LG have tapped their potential. Then the domestic brands surged into the market and did remarkably well. They include Micromax, Karbonn, Lava,

Spice, etc who have also managed to mark their presence in the competitive mobile market. The market of late has witnessed a huge shift in consumer choices. The smartphone trend is catching up across India as mobile phone with internet connection is growing popular across India. The Chinese smartphones have joined the foray in the Indian market and they are showing great improvement in sales and marked a major share in the Indian smartphone market. Some of the key Chinese smartphone brands have been Gionee, Huawei, Oppo, Lenovo and they have managed to show remarkable growth. They grew from less than 2% smartphone market share in Jan 2014 to 12% by the end of June 2014. About a dozen Chinese handset brands, including Gionee, Lenovo, OPPO, Huawei, ZTE and Konka, have together taken a little more than 10 per cent of the Indian

7

handset market in the past couple of years. The number was only one to two per cent about two years earlier. One of the key trends of growing popularity of Chinese smartphones can be witnessed in the exponential growth of Xiaomi. It has become the leading company in China and other emerging key markets. The four key factors that have contributed to Xiaomi’s success include in-house R&D and competitively priced devices, ability to monetize services, complete online distribution along with wide and deep consumer engagement and cult following. The Indian mobile devices market has always had unique characteristics. In a retail market where the OEM sells the devices directly to the consumer, a robust distribution network (with adequate channel incentives), sustained brand building

and marketing, availability of a number of products on the portfolio and competitive pricing have conventionally been the key factors of success in this market. The Chinese smartphone brands have brought in strong marketing and distribution network in India. The big brands are facing stiff competition as the Chinese smartphone brands are offering better specs and quality hardware in competitive prices. According to research firm IDC, the Indian smartphone market grew at 82 per cent year-on-year in the quarter ended September 2014 to 23.3 million units. The Chinese players who have managed to mark their presence inclued

Xiaomi

Just about four years old, Xiaomi (pronounced as Shao-me) was started by eight co-founders in China. They came up with their first smartphone, Mi1, in 2011 and received around 3,00,000 orders within a few hours. The company, which entered the Indian market last year, has launched three devices here so far -- Redmi 1S, Redmi Note and Mi3 -- in partnership with e-commerce major Flipkart. While all this sounds ordinary, there are many special things about Xiaomi. The company isn't available in any offline retail

channel and sells phones online. It doesn't believe in traditional marketing campaigns and instead communicates through social networking sites. Xiaomi is expected to launch its latest 4G device Mi4 in the country January 28th

Xiaomi is expected to launch its latest 4G device Mi4 in the country on January 28th as it looks to strengthen its position in the booming Indian smartphone market. Xiaomi is often reported as the Apple of China ans is popular for launching budget friendly smartphones that are not expensive.

as it looks to strengthen its position in the booming Indian smartphone market. Xiaomi is often reported as the Apple of China and is popular for launching budget friendly smartphones that are not expensive. The company believes in offering phones almost at minimum cost and earn money by selling the devices for over a year and a half and also by making and selling accessories. It also plans to increase focus on after-sale services. Xiaomi has just five service centres across India at present.

Gionee

Gionee is marekting itself as the sexiest and as the world's slimmest smartphone. It has managed to garner good market share in India following the aggressive marketing campaign and positive public response. Founded in China in 2002, Gionee entered India last year to compete against global brands such as Samsung and Nokia as well as Indian players including Micromax and Karbonn. Within a short span of time, Gionee has rolled out a wide range of handsets. It has received a good response, both for the hardware and software. Gionee launched the Elife S5.5 in India dubbed as the slimmest phone for a price of Rs 22,999, last year. Chinese handset maker

COVERSTORY Gionee plans to set up a manufacturing facility in India in the next couple of years. Gionee's devices are priced 10-15 per cent above Indian brands and 40-45 per cent below global brands. To expand its retail presence across the country, the company, according to a press release, plans to open 250 brand stores across the country by the end of this financial year and increase its service centres to 750 from the existing 700 ones.. The company expects to reach a target of Rs 2,500 crore by the end of this year, with average revenue of Rs 125 crore a month. Gionee is looking at becoming the number six player in India, with local sales of six million smartphones out of the 35 million global sales target by the end of 2014 from 15 models.

Oppo Mobile

After making its presence felt in China, Oppo Mobile decided to enter the evolving Indian handset market earlier this year. The company roped in actors Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor to promote its handsets. It believes in laying emphasis on 'experience'. The company plans to have a diverse portfolio of more than 10 mobile phones across categories by December 2014. It ventured into India with the flagship N1 abd now has quite a few offerings in the market. The Oppo R5 was launched in December. It is planning to build its own showrooms and exclusive stores shortly. It is aiming to have over 4,000 retail points in one year. The no-frills operations, along with their lean supply chain, direct access to consumers and growing brand (of some of the leading players such as Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal), and most importantly competition among themselves make the Indian e-commerce players the preferred partners for many smartphone OEMs operating in India. E-commerce sites have become the default (and only) channel for some OEMs

01/FEBRUARY/2015 such as Xiaomi, Obi and Motorola. With e-commerce sites growing in popularity the Indian smartphone market will be redefined by this trend. The growth of the e-commerce sites is causing stiff competition to the large format retail, organized retail, exclusive brand and large multi-brand outlets in the urban areas. The consumers are looking for the latest technology and new gadgets. Most of the mobile device consumers are repeat buyers who look to purchase smartphones based on their technological needs and personal preferences. The marketing campaigns of these smartphone companies have also gone a long way in helping them reach out to the Indian consumer. This changing market choices signify a paradigm shift in the Indian smartphone space.Beside the top eight Chinese brands which have already made their presence felt here, in India, another 45 — including Zopo, UMI, JiaYu, Mogu, Iocean and Meizu — are working to tap the smartphone market here. All these new products will eat into the Indian companies market share. The strategy is to flood the market

9

with a lot of choice for consumers, including high-end hardware and good experience. The target for these companies are the youth who are looking for technological innovations instead of just a phone for handling calls. The Chinese smartphone brands sell 200,000-300,000 units a month across India on an average, in cities and semi-urban markets. The Chinese brands are definitley here to stay. They are focusing on setting up R&D centres and also expanding their retail and service outlets. The Indian brands will have to strategize a fresh marketing approach to bring in the customers. They will need to develop a personal and direct connect with the Indian consumer while at the same time understand the needs and experience expected by the end-consumer. The Indian smartphone brands will need to offer products and technology that meet with the needs of the consumer and improve on providing better digital and service experience to the technology friendly Indian consumer.

The Chinese brands are definitley here to stay. They are focusing on setting up R&D centres and also expanding their retail and service outlets. The Indian brands will have to strategize a fresh marketing approach to bring in the customers.
