The Kingdom of the Netherlands in a Nutshell.
By J o a n n a Fox
Sint Marteen
Amsterdam
here’s a strong Dutch influence in all areas of life in Aruba, from food, art, and culture, to language, business, government, and education. Considering the Dutch have been in Aruba since the 1600s, this definitely comes as no surprise. What is more surprising is the Netherland’s far-reaching kingdom, and how Aruba is just one place amongst its 6 Caribbean islands, 4 countries, and 12 provinces. To break this down in the clearest way, it’s best to start off with the basics first: the Netherlands is a country in Europe that is separated into twelve provinces. When speaking about the Netherlands, people often incorrectly refer to it as Holland. This is because two of the country’s most populated provinces are North Holland and South Holland, where some of the biggest and most recognized cities are located (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague). People who live in either of these Hollands also refer to themselves as Hollanders, so this is where a lot of the confusion is rooted. Regardless, everyone in the Netherlands is considered Dutch, which is also the language they speak. The capital city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (more on that soon) is Amsterdam, located in North Holland, in the country of the Netherlands.
The Kingdom The Kingdom of the Netherlands is headed by the Dutch Royal Family, and within this kingdom there are four countries. In Europe there are the Netherlands, and in the Caribbean there are the islands of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten. All of these Caribbean islands have their own governments, their own currencies, are considered constituent countries (a country that makes up a part of a larger political entity) and operate within the kingdom. Although Aruba and Curaçao cover the whole area of their respective islands, Sint Maarten is actually only a part of an island, which is shared with the French and who call their side Saint-Martin. It’s not uncommon to hear mention of the ABC Islands when talking about Aruba and it’s geography. The term is in reference to the three islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. They’re all in close proximity to each other in the Leeward Antilles chain, and Bonaire also happens to be… Dutch. So here’s the thing:
Bonaire
Saba
Papiamento and the ABC Islands Besides being part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and within close proximity to each other, the ABC islands (made up of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao) share a common native language called Papiamento. Now an official language in Aruba and Curaçao, and a recognized language in Bonaire, Papiamento is, at its roots, Afro-Portuguese Creole, which over time borrowed words and syntax from Dutch, Spanish, and English to form the recognized language it is today. It was believed Papiamento developed as a pidgin language that was first used to communicate between African slaves and Portuguese slave traders. As more cultures were introduced to the islands, the language evolved. Its dialects vary from Papiamento in Aruba, to Papiamentu in Curaçao, and Papiamen in Bonaire, where it’s not technically considered a dialect but is still distinguished. Papiamento was Aruba’s unofficial native language for 300 years before it was declared official in 2003. It can be found on all the Dutch Caribbean islands, but its roots lay firmly within the ABC’s.

Curaçao
The Dutch have three more islands in the Caribbean, which are Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba (the BES Islands). They aren’t actually considered countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but are more like cities that belong to the country of the Netherlands in Europe. Also called the Caribbean Netherlands, they are special municipalities that enjoy many of the same perks as the Netherlands, including universal health care, education, and social housing. As opposed to living in Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, which are individual constituent countries, the Caribbean Netherlanders vote in Dutch elections just like any person living in Netherlands, and are governed by Dutch law.

GOLD S
o you want to strike it rich in Aruba. You could spend an afternoon chatting up a lonely heiress by the pool at a posh resort. If that doesn’t work, you could spend a night doubling down at a blackjack table. Or you could drive out to an old abandoned gold mine and start digging. No trip to Aruba is complete without a visit to the evocative mine ruins at Balashi and Bushiribana. Walking through them, admiring their counterfeit antiquity at the edge of the sea, you are reminded that Aruba is an island of rich history, along with big dreams that dropped anchor even here in the desert scrub.
Aruba’s gold rush, if you can call it that, began in the early 19th century. A young boy found a glittering rock while he was trying to corral a sheep. Prospecting took hold anywhere and everywhere, but the government was the only buyer and set the price. In 1854, a more promising deposit was discovered and a more involved mining industry began. The concession was a hot commodity, passing through Dutch, American, and British hands before an Aruban company was finally launched. The mining operations were hardly sophisticated, however. Using the powerful winds of the northeast coast, the main mills at Balashi and Bushiribana
ground the limestone rocks into dust, and in dust was treated with quicksilver. Eventually cyanide became the preferred agent, greatly increasing the amount of gold that could be extracted. WWI marked the end of the gold industry in Aruba, and even though some three million pounds of gold had been extracted, a shortage of mining materials halted production. Then the oil refineries started up in 1924 and a black gold rush ensued, but we all know oil doesn’t have the charm or romance of gold. So start digging, because that heiress isn’t looking too impressed.

INTERVIEW
THE MANCHEBO EXPERIENCE T
here are plenty of different hotel experiences in Aruba for every type of traveler. Whether you’re looking for largescale, brand-name, family resorts smack dab in the center of Palm Beach, five-star hotels with their own clubs and casinos, long-term guesthouses off the beaten path, or smaller, family-run places, tourists visiting this small tropical island are spoiled for choice.
26
If you’re the type of vacationer that prefers to be in an intimate setting where everyone knows your name, almost every room has a gorgeous view, the beach is wide and spacious, the restaurant choices are plentiful, and every day you can enjoy a yoga class, a spa treatment, or both, then The Manchebo Beach Resort & Spa might be exactly the kind of hotel you’ve been looking for.
The Manchebo Beach Resort is one of the oldest hospitality destinations on the island. Built in 1966, and being one of the first tourism developments, the owners chose the best location, on the western tip of Eagle Beach. But Manchebo back then and Manchebo now are two very different places. When Manchebo’s General Manager, Edgar Roelofs, was hired 12 years ago, he had a vision of what this hotel could achieve. He knew it had the potential to be something more than the two-star resort it was at the time, that it could be something special, exclusive, and most importantly, a tropical home away from home for his global clientele.
By J o a n n a Fox — Ph o t og r aph y S t e ve K e i th K e n n e t h The yse n
“We have a beautiful spa, and that’s actually how the turn-around began when I started here. The owner hired me for a 12-month consultant contract and I came up within the first month with the spa project. We had a beautiful, tropical design and that was the beginning of the rejuvenation of the resort, to turn it into the four-star hotel that it is today. People feel right at home here.” It does feel like home at Manchebo, and a very luxurious home at that. The dark wood and zen-like atmosphere of the new spa make you want to spend the day lounging in the cool, shaded reception in your big white bathrobe. The massage rooms along the row of cabanas each have a window directly overlooking the beach, where you can hear the wind rustling in the palm trees and the waves lapping the shore while you enjoy being pampered. “The spa really turned out nicely. The cabanas are imported from Bali, it’s full service with manicures, pedicures, facials, scrubs, and wraps, a Jacuzzi, and there’s even a small foot fish spa, where the little fish nibble and clean your feet. And then we added the yoga and the pilates throughout the years too, and now people come here just to relax and to wind down.”
Along with the resort’s spa and wellness programs, they recently renovated their 72 rooms so that guests can enjoy a higher standard of quality. From the rain showers in the bathrooms, to big, comfortable beds and bedding, to the local art that adorns the walls, the rooms feel modern, sleek, tasteful, and fresh. It also helps that because of the configuration of the hotel, almost all the rooms in this two-storey, sprawling layout either have balconies that overlook the ocean or sliding doors that give way to lush garden patios facing the beach. Beyond the revamped rooms, pristine spa, and postcard-perfect beach, Manchebo has not one, but four restaurants to choose from. There’s nothing nicer than to take a break from the beach and have lunch in the shade with the sea breeze coming off the ocean. Manchebo’s beachside restaurant and bar, Pega Pega, is only a few steps away from the resort’s palapas and lounge chairs and open all day for food, snacks, and drinks. For dinner, there’s the French Steakhouse for all your comfort classics, combined with top quality South American beef. There’s the brand new sushi bar, Omakase, to take advantage of all the wonderful, fresh seafood. And finally, Ike’s Bistro for a true culinary experience. That spot’s namesake, Ike, was actually one of the owners.
He passed away about 8 years ago, but as Roelofs explains, “he especially liked the restaurant part of the business. I think that’s why we ended up with so many restaurants. It’s kind of crazy for a 72-room hotel to have four different restaurants but that’s how it is,” Roelofs laughs. The most important part of any hotel business, however, is the people who make it their priority to ensure that the guests have the best possible experience. For Roelofs, he knew that this industry was something he wanted to pursue from a very young age, when his parents would take him to stay at boutique hotels in Europe. At 18 years old, he enrolled in hotel management school and once he graduated, went off to find work in Aruba. Eventually, he made his way to Manchebo and now he considers this place his second home. “It’s one of the few family-owned places left. I’m not part of the family, but they make me feel like I am, so you run it like your own business. It takes a lot of energy because people have higher expectations, so you want to make sure that when they come here, you live up to their expectations.” Roelofs prides himself on being very involved with the guests. Every Tuesday there is a manager party where he invites all the guests to come and have a drink with him. “They love it and they tell me how much they like it here and you get good feedback and suggestions. You get a real bond with them.” Roelofs and his team strive and succeed at making Manchebo a very relaxing, contemporary, and friendly atmosphere. “We’re trying to make this a very cool place. The owners love it, I love it, and my management team loves it. It’s great to work here and to appreciate all the years of working here, as well as the guests who have been coming back for so many years. They come back and they bring gifts for the kids of the employees.” That is definitely not your typical resort, and neither is Manchebo. An Aruban experience like no other, you really have to go and see for yourself.

THE ISLAND OF ALOES T
he benefits of the Aloe plant date back to the great civilizations of the world. From the Greeks and Romans to the ancient Egyptians and Persians, people have always been drawn to the plant for the healing properties attributed to its juices. Aloe thrives in warm, dry climates, and in the 1800s it was introduced to Aruba by the Dutch for commercial agriculture. The Aloe industry steadily grew, and not only became an important cash crop for Aruba, but also provided work for its inhabitants. There have been many Aloe companies on the island since then, but it is Aruba Aloe Balm N.V. that still stands as one of the oldest active Aloe companies in the world. To find out more about the company, its rich history and what makes Aruba’s Aloe so sought after, we spoke to the Director of Operations, Koos Veel.
Koos Veel — Director of Operations
How did Aruba Aloe Balm N.V. come to be?
What makes Aruba’s Aloe superior?
What is your favorite?
After the introduction of Aloe Vera plants in Aruba in 1840, several companies began to export the Aloe Hard Gum from Aruba to places around the world. Most were companies doing other types of import/export business as well, and one of them became Aruba Aloe Balm as it is known today. That company was founded by Cornelis Eman in 1890. It is the only remaining Aloe company in Aruba and not only one of the oldest companies dealing with Aloe Vera in the world, but also one of the first in the world to produce cosmetic products based upon the Aloe Vera gel. Eman established the company as a family business, and it stayed that way from its founding until 2000. In 2000 it was taken over by the well-known Aruban businessman, L. A. (Louis) Posner. The company has changed names several times over the years, mainly because the types of products that it manufactures have changed several times. At first we only exported the Aloe Hard Gum. Then it became the Aloin, and later the cosmetic products got the focus of the business. Currently, Aruba Aloe Balm manufactures cosmetic products for worldwide distribution and, more recently, pharmaceutical finished products for the European market. Several distribution companies in different parts of the world are involved in the marketing and sales of products of Aruba Aloe Balm N.V. The Aloes that we use still come from exactly the same Aloe fields that were planted in 1890 by the founder Cornelis Eman.
We were one of the first companies to formulate and manufacture Aloe-based Skin, Hair, and Sun Care products, as well as the growing of the Aloes at the cosmetic production plant. The quality of the Aruban Aloes has been the best in the world for more than 150 years. Aruba’s desert-like environment intensifies the Aloe plant’s natural healing qualities and produces the earth’s most potent Aloe Vera gel. We hand-cut the leaf within hours of harvest to protect its rich and powerful nutrients.
I am very proud of the Medical After Care Cream, Alhydran, that has been such a success with burn victims. I love our Special Care Lotion, and I go nowhere without our Lip Balm. Our Sunscreen line is a life saver in Aruba, where it really protects against the very strong sun.
What has this industry done for the island of Aruba? Aloe Vera marked Aruba’s first source of welfare and is still one of the only export products the island has. We pride ourselves on creating products with a plant that is so prominent in our island’s culture and heritage, not to mention so unique in its countless benefits. Aruba’s coat of arms even features an Aloe plant in one of its quadrants. We were nicknamed ‘Island of Aloes’ in the 1920s.
What is your favorite part of being involved with Aruba Aloe? All those happy customers are a constant motivation.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about Aruba Aloe? If you want to learn more about the history of Aloe Vera and how Aruba Aloe’s products are made, come visit us during your stay here on Aruba! The tour and museum are open Monday thru Saturday, 8 am to 5 pm. If you are interested in learning more about Aruba Aloe products you can also visit www.arubaaloe.com. We hope to see you soon!
How many products does Aruba Aloe have right now? We have about 49 products, but are constantly working on our Research & Development. We are working on many new products as we speak.

We have grown from a small cosmetic production plant to a company that manufactures products that are sold in more than 20 countries around the world. We have an online sales website in the US that is doing extremely well, and 15 retail outlets of our own, selling only our products. When I started working for the company we had 7 employees. We now have more than 80 employees after our workforce almost doubled over the past year.
Yes, we sell them in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, and soon in the Netherlands. Alhydran, the Medical After Care Cream, is sold in over 22 countries worldwide, ranging from countries in Europe to even South Korea.

THE CORAL BRIDGE I
f you travel across the island of Aruba, away from the more populated, tourist-centric east coast, and make your way towards the west side, you’ll discover a rugged and wild part of the coastline. It is here that you’ll come across the ruins of what was once one of the island’s most treasured attractions and the largest of its kind in the Caribbean: Aruba’s natural coral bridge. Located just north of Andicuri beach (famous for it’s surfing) and down a winding, bumpy road, this exceptional wonder extended 100 feet across the water and was 25 feet high. For as long as most Arubans could remember, this bridge was famous. It was something that locals and tourists alike would visit, admire, and photograph.
Made from a combination of the ocean’s incessant pounding and the strong winds against the coral limestone, the water eventually worked its way through the solid mass and slowly expanded until it broke through and an arc was formed across the shore. Thousands of tourists would make the trek every year to this coveted spot and cross the coral bridge, taking in the breathtaking natural structure. Then out of nowhere, at dawn on September 2nd, 2005, the bridge collapsed. Fortunately no one was hurt, but suddenly Aruba’s treasure was no longer, and worse still, it could never be rebuilt. Tragic not only for the loss of an extraordinary and worldfamous natural wonder, it was also an enormous loss for an island so dependent on the revenue brought in by sight-seers. The bridge was such an important attraction that many Arubans saw it as a devastating blow for the local tourism industry.
What the collapse of this treasured landmark revealed, however, there was another smaller natural bridge that had been standing in the shadows this whole time. It was often referred to as the “daughter” of the larger bridge and, although not as impressive, it stands as a reminder of what used to be, still attracting tourists to this historic spot season after season. One can only hope that, over time, another massive natural bridge will be discovered and will represent a new landmark for generations of Arubans to come.

A WEDDING IN PARADISE
By J o a n n a Fo x
For many couples, the day of their wedding is one of the most important moments in their lives, and one that they’ll remember forever. Although the actual day always seems to pass in the blink of an eye, the build-up, preparations, and planning are paramount to making everything just right, from the food to the flowers, the ceremony, music, drinks, and first dance. With so many decisions to make and details to think about, there’s no better choice than Aruba’s wedding experts. Equipped with years of experience, they know exactly how to help navigate couples so that this special day is worry free, full of laughter and love.
Without the added stress of having to worry about rain or cold weather ruining the big day, more time can be focused on planning the perfect tropical ceremony. Aruba has some of the most gorgeous beaches in the world, and a wonderful selection of hidden spots that only the island’s top nuptial professionals can suggest and reveal. There are spectacular beachside coves for smaller, more intimate ceremonies, as well as wide, white sand stretches that are great for larger groups. Whether on a pier or private boat, church, hotel, or beach, every wedding in Aruba is magical in its very own way.
The dining scene in Aruba is one of the most sophisticated in all of the Caribbean. The island’s unique mix of Dutch and Spanish make for a local cuisine all its own, complemented by a strong North American, South American, and European influence. Because of this wonderful melting pot, there is no type of cuisine or food that is off limits here. Some of the best quality beef comes from South America, as close as 30 miles away, where the high standards of meat rival the US for value and taste. Closer to home the selection of fresh seafood is incredible, with caught-that-day fish such as wahoo, mahi-mahi, grouper, snapper, Caribbean lobsters, and even shrimp. So no matter what dietary need or food preference required, be it a kid-friendly menu or a particular cake design, planning a wedding menu with all the right details and flourishes couldn’t be easier or tastier. The most significant part of a wedding is coming together with friends, family, and loved ones to share an incredibly personal, wonderful occasion. Add a little Aruban sun and sand to the mix, and make this a destination wedding everyone will look back on with the fondest of memories for years to come.
51
The gorgeous island of Aruba is a popular destination wedding location for husbands-and-wivesto-be for many reasons, but first on that list is the weather. It’s one of the greatest fears of many couples, and definitely the one thing they can’t plan on. Aruba’s desert climate makes it the driest island in the Caribbean. Average temperatures are a pleasant 82F, with the cooling tradewinds that sweep in off the coastlines offering relief on hotter, sunny days. Aruba is also located outside the hurricane belt, so there is never a bad time of year to plan a wedding here, whether summer, winter, spring or fall.
SHOPPINGINTL.COM
With its picturesque setting, warm, dry climate, breathtaking beaches, and romantic sunsets, Aruba is the perfect location for your special day. No matter what kind of wedding experience you’re looking for, this stunning Caribbean island can accommodate your every whim and nuptial need. Walk barefoot along the beach with the gentle ocean breeze at your back, and dance all night by fiery torch light to the sounds of an island band. Celebrate with fresh, local food and drink, and toast to tying the knot as the sun sinks below the horizon. From the dramatic landscapes to pristine soft, white sands, this wedding destination is the tropical paradise you’ve always dreamed of. It all begins here in Aruba.

THE ART OF ARZU 66
By J o a n n a Fox — Ph o t og r aph y K e nne t h The yse n
F
or Columbian born, Aruba resident Candy Rasmijn-Reino, making jewelry simply started as a hobby. It was something she liked to do when not working in Marketing, Event and Public Relations for the Paseo Herencia Shopping & Entertainment Center. She always loved big, statement pieces, and when she couldn’t find something she liked in stores she decided to try her hand at making her own. It wasn’t long before people began to take notice of Candy’s extremely intricate, original jewelry, and suddenly she realized that perhaps this was more than just a pastime.
“I started to make jewelry for other people too, and I decided I was going to make it happen. I wanted different designs for different kinds of people,” explains Candy.
of significance for her. “ARZU means wish, hope, and love. I was looking for a name with special meaning and those are really key words. Everyone needs to have them in their lives”.
Although she had never formally learned how to make jewelry, she began to enroll in different workshops that were available. She learned how to weld first, and then moved on to working with fine materials and gems before realizing that she wanted to focus on using her hands versus overcomplicating her pieces with tools. For her, handmade pieces were much more interesting. When it came to naming her company, Candy turned to a Persian word that held a lot
Despite the fact that there are a lot of artists in Aruba, there aren’t many people making jewelry. Even amongst those designers, Candy wanted ARZU to significantly stand out from the rest with clean lines and sleek designs. “I’m trying to make it completely different from what’s out there. Every collection I make, I try and make it different in color and shape, or I use another material or different stones.”
Candy Rasmijn-Reino — Jewelry Designer
Designed by a woman for women, Candy takes the time to think about how the jewelry will feel for her clients when she’s making something. For her, comfort is just as important as style. “I use a lot of stones but the challenge is that a lot of stones are so heavy. You’ll see the pieces and you’ll think they’re really heavy pieces, but they’re so light. I try to use different closures so that they’re easy to wear. I try to make it really comfortable because I really like necklaces and big pieces but I don’t want them to be uncomfortable.”
Entitled Winter, it is inspired by a local woman and her little girl, named Winter, who was born with cystic fibrosis. This single mother (and friend of Candy’s) had to leave Aruba to save her daughter’s life. Seeking special treatment in Switzerland, it was the only thing she could do to give Winter a fighting chance against this disease. “Her daughter needs a clean environment so she needs to be in a specific place. To live your life on the side and put your little girl first, my designs and my inspiration are completely about these two, the mother and the little girl. The little one is a fighter and her mother is trying to give the little one a better life. I think this is amazing.” Candy’s work was shown at the Miami Beach International Fashion Week and can be found at both the Carribbean Queen jewelry store and Yolo at the Paseo Herencia Mall.

Everything is made here in Aruba, and Candy, who not only has her company but is also a busy mother and wife, works from her home studio. “I have a little place where I work and where I love to do art. For me, this is my relaxing time. Sometimes I even go next to the beach and do my jewelry there.” With several collections that include necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings already under her belt, Candy is currently launching her newest collection, and possibly the one closest to her heart.

Candy travels all over the world for her materials, and is drawn to anything that she finds inspiring. She doesn’t limit herself when creating her wearable art, working with everything from stones and freshwater pearls, to gold plating, silver, and leather. “I buy my materials everywhere. Wherever I can find things, I’ll use them. Sometimes I see special materials that are perfect to create unique pieces. I think my jewelry represents that.”

INTERVIEW
ZISSU
— THE IRON BUTTERFLY T
here was a time, before Kanye and Kim turned vulgarity into a luxury lifestyle, before DJs infested the lobbies of hotels or the first class of airplanes, when the jet set had glamour and charm and hints of actual intelligence. If Jackie O was busy on Capri, or Bianca Jagger was tied up at Studio 54, you still expected to find a woman like Eva Zissu turning heads and making a big impression at the boarding gate.
74
She is Aruba’s First Lady of fashion, its Diane Von Furstenburg. At 60, she still has it, all of it, body and soul. She’s had plenty of time and plenty of travel to polish her fashion sense, including unforgettable teenage years spent in America. Zissu wasn’t just in America, however. She was in LA, basking in the glow of Hollywood as it moved into the twilight of its golden age. “I was very young at that time. I lived in Beverly Hills and I was a leader in fashion in my school. Anything I would wear, they would copy. I liked to wear ballet slippers as shoes, so all the girls decided that this was a great look and that’s how it went on. I went to Beverly Hills High. It was all about celebrities’ sons and daughters in that place. I met Ricci Martin and we started going out. I never was allowed to do as many things as my friends. I had overprotective European parents. So I would have to kind of sneak around to go places like Dean Martin’s ranch. They were amazing people, fun and happy. We would horseback ride and just chill out to music and love.”
Zissu returned to Venezuela, but left dental school in her early twenties to once again champ at the bit of adventure. For those familiar with the works of Philip Roth and Saul Bellow, she exudes the flinty drive of mid-century Jewish strivers fighting for success and acceptance from the outside in. It’s what she calls her base and her power. “I am strong because of my parents’ suffering during World War II. Survival is the word that describes their endurance of this suffering. You know, with what is happening in the world right now we have to be very strong. You never know when a Jew will be made to leave his or her place, where they made their home and business that they worked so hard to build. We are at this even in the 21st century. Survival, survival. Look at Europe. Look all over the world. History wants to be repeated.” This aggrieved fire of spirit does not compromise her charm or charisma. Zissu is a woman of hyperbolic femininity, a person who toys with caricature like a cat plays with a mouse. It should come as no surprise that Zissu has opened a boutique in the much-anticipated Ritz-Carlton, where she is showcasing beachwear of her own inimitable design. Her jet lag and my hangover met at the Ritz-Carlton for a chat.
TD: Were you ever a Venezuelan beauty queen?
By T im o t hy Dugda l e — Ph o t og r aph y K e nne t h The yse n
EZ: No, no. Just modelling and TV commercials. I had been in dental school for three years and then we had a strike at the university. And it was very long so with a few friends, I decided to enroll at a modelling school. A week later we already had contracts doing ads for movies, television, and magazines. For me, it was a hobby because I still wanted to be a dentist. But I’ve always been surrounded by fashion. My mother had a clothing factory that she started after WWII.
TD: So in one hand you had dental tools and the other a suitcase of clothes? EZ: Exactly. When I wasn’t in class, I was in the cafeteria selling clothes. My mother had these boutique stores in Caracas, so I did the shows as well. Four times a year we went to Paris and Italy on buying tours, so I had a chance to meet a lot of designers. Louis Ferro, who was very big at that time in the late seventies, invited me to move to Europe and create my own line. They wanted me to do apprenticeships at all the big houses as well. I was very young at that time and I was ready to move to the big city of Paris by myself.
TD: Did you learn to actually cut the clothes? EZ: I am a self-taught designer. You know, I put a design together using photographs and I have someone who draws for me. I have a factory in India that listens closely, captures what I want and sends me samples. From there I do the changes from the prototype.
Eva Zissu Owner and Designer
EZ: When I was young, I naturally focused
Someone who reads about fashion, who travels a lot and knows what’s happening in the fashion world. If you want to know about fashion you have to read about it. You have to be informed. You have to educate yourself.
on young fashion. I had a store for kids called “Petit Rolls.” I’ve always wanted a Rolls Royce, but I had to make do with the chassis of Volkswagens that I got from wreckers and used car lots. At that time I was just buying and selling, not designing. My target wasn’t the rich of Caracas. I always created a rich look for the middle class. Clothing is not about big spending. Fashion is about what is happening at the moment. I have chiffons, poly chiffons and silk chiffons. For the silk you’ll pay more, but I have things that anyone can afford.
TD: Does a woman need to have a “bella figura” to wear Zissu? EZ: Not at all. I have things in here that are one size. It’s resort wear. If you have a good imagination and the right accents, the right shoes and the right accessories, you could go to a wedding with these pieces. The fashion right now allows women to do this. Ten years ago, no way! I am doing a lot of fashion now that is from the East, with Buddhist sensibilities. People are going more spiritual. They seek out and accept things that come from spiritual places. My clothes make a woman feel like she’s flowing. There’s a lot of sensuality to it.
EZ: Someone who is fashion-oriented.
TD: That said, what do you think are the trends in Aruba fashion that appeal to these women? EZ: It’s so hot, so you’re either with a pair of shorts or a little skirt or a light long dress. My resort wear is kaftans and tunics. You can wear my clothes anytime, anywhere in Aruba, even for a night out in the casino. Wear nice jewelry, you look expensive. There are women who even buy my tunics for sleeping at home. They want to look radiant, they want to look silky. Women want more comfort in fashion.
TD: But women are still wearing those godforsaken high heels. EZ: They are still there. A good pair of jeans and a nice pair of high heels and a good t-shirt, that will work very well. Now, if you’re going to wear heels you have to know how to move. If not, you look ridiculous. When a woman has self-confidence you will see it when she walks. Self-confidence is the number one
secret to life. Look at beauty pageants. If a beautiful woman doesn’t come out and walk as if she’s the boss of her body and her clothes and the room itself, it’s sad. For me, that’s why Venezuela has had so many beauty queens. They come out looking like they own the world when they hit the runway.
TD: What about all that plastic surgery? Latin America loves it. EZ: Look, what plastic surgery does is boost self-confidence that should already be there. When a woman has a nice chest you can see her working it. But, of course, she has to have the right surgeon.
TD: What is next for Zissu? EZ: I have eleven stores on this island ‑ shoe stores, clothing stores, this boutique. I don’t have the capacity to do big, big numbers of outfits. I’d have to go into mass production and then compromise on quality. I’m in a lot of stores in Puerto Rico. But frankly, I’m ready to take things a little easier now and focus on personal designs. In the past I focused on the East. This year I’ve tried to bring the big savana of my country, Venezuela, into my designs, like a snakeskin pattern or the flowers. Next year, perhaps, I’ll take your suggestion and look in the desert.

LOCAL BREW I
f you’re a fan of having a drink or two, one of the first things that you look forward to when travelling is checking out the local booze. From wine to cider, champagne or sherry, nothing beats drinking like a local. In the case of Aruba that means sitting back, kicking up your feet, and cracking into one of the island’s craft beers. Nothing beats the heat or quenches your thirst quite like an ice-cold brew. Made right on the island at the Tropical Bottling Company of Aruba, this small land mass has not one, but two local beers: Balashi, and
it’s younger sibling, Chill, which just celebrated its fourth anniversary. Both beers are perfect for Aruba’s hot, dry climate and each reflects the island’s lifestyle: friendly, relaxed, and easy going. “Chill and Balashi have grown into top beers right now for the island, and their popularity seems to be growing rather than subsiding, which is actually a very comforting feeling,” explains Richard A. De Veer, Sales and Marketing Director for the Tropical Bottling Company of Aruba. “When you live on a small island and are competing against major beer brands – when you’re talking Budweiser and Heineken you’re talking about two of the biggest beers in the world – having done what we’ve been able to do in this market, we’re proud. It was a lot of work and it’s not done. You’re constantly under pressure and you have to know what your customers want. At the end of the day, they want a local island brew and that’s exactly what we provide for them.”
Not having preservatives creates a real advantage over run-of-the-mill imports, because it means that the beer is fresh and doesn’t have the extra chemicals routinely added to extend shelf life. “The only thing we ask of our customers and the shops that sell our products is that they don’t store it in areas that are hot, and keep it out of direct sunlight. Those are the two enemies of beer: temperature and light. As long as we have people that are able to understand that and be careful of our beer, we’ll have a great tasting beer, even 6 months from production.”
It’s an education with beer, both learning about what people want to drink, and helping to teach them the best way to drink it. Luckily, the average age of a store-bought Balashi in Aruba is less than a month. “You could run into two months. Maybe in a really slow location you could run into 3 months, but that’s very unusual,” says De Veer. “We do have a shelf life of 6 months. Basically what we’re saying is that for 6 months the taste of our products is stable. We are able to guarantee a particular taste. But here’s the thing about beer: when you don’t have preservatives or stabilizers in it, it changes, it’s living.” According to De Veer, if a freshly brewed beer is kept in the heat and then cooled, it will end up tasting older. If it’s heated and cooled several times, it could end up spoiling the beer altogether. “These are the types of things that we talk to our customers about so that they understand just how important it is that they really safeguard how our product is stored and how it is sold.” The Tropical Bottling Company’s Brewmaster, Albert Bauch, has been working very hard to ensure the top quality of not only their beers, but all the company’s products, since he first moved to the island from Germany in 2008. It was his grandfather that first gave him a taste for beer at a young age. “If I would bring him a beer, he would tell me that I could have a sip. My mother says that I got hooked on it back then and never left it,” Bauch recalls. At the age of 16 he began working part-time at a local brewery, and once he realized he could study to get his Brewmaster’s Degree there was no question of what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. As soon as he got his degree, he saw an opportunity in Aruba and jumped at it. “First of all I’m a Brewmaster, I make beer every day. It’s one of the best jobs you can have, and on top of that I live in the Caribbean,” says Bauch. “Not bad at all.”
Albert Bauch Brewmaster
If there’s anything besides quality that the Tropical Bottling Company honors, it’s their dedicated staff. From Bauch and the team who brew and bottle, to the drivers that deliver the beer, to everyone in between, De Veer prides himself on the fact that they’ve had employees working for them for a very long time. With staff celebrating up to 40 years with the company, it’s definitely something they don’t take lightly. “When you live in any country, working, you can invest in trucks and buildings and what not, but without the right people you’re just a rich building or an expensive set of equipment. So we’ve prided ourselves on our people and the fact that they want to stay working with us for their entire careers.” As much as they care about the well-being of their staff, they also care about the state of Aruba. Since it is an island, fresh water is an important commodity. Wherever possible the company recycles their water, repurposing the supply to wash the trucks or water the plants. They also have solar panels on the roofs of the facilities, and their spent grain from the beer is sold at a very low price to local ranchers as feed for their animals. “There is a lot of local support and people do realize what it is that we’re doing,” explains De Veer. “I think people are going to realize that when they buy these other beers the money leaves the island, but when they buy our beer the money stays. And in that aspect it keeps the money circulating in our economy.” So get out there, grab a light and refreshing Chill, or a slightly more bitter Balashi, and enjoy a little taste of what Aruba has to offer.
95
With the current climate being in favor of local craft beer, more and more tourists and Arubans are opting for lesser-known, locally brewed beverages over brand name imports. This trend, one that has been thriving in North American bars and breweries, is now reflected in the Caribbean market. “It’s interesting to see that the craft segment is growing and we fit right along in that. What also makes it special for us is that we are a no preservative beer,” De Veer adds.

The Tropical Bottling Company of Aruba’s story goes back to the 1920s, where it all began with the De Veer family and their small chain of open air, silent movie theatres. Gradually growing and expanding into different realms of business, they acquired the Coca Cola Bottler Company in 1949. They began to diversify about 15 years ago, when they decided to distribute more than just soft drinks. In a joint venture with a German company, they started producing Balashi Beer. With time, they bought the Germans out and merged the Coca Cola Bottler Company and the brewery to create the Tropical Bottling Company of Aruba. Adding more to their beverage portfolio as the years went by, they now distribute bottled water, Bacardi products (including Bacardi rum, Grey Goose vodka, and Dewars scotch whisky) and Beringer wines. “We’re no longer just a soft drink company. We do a lot more than that and we’re able to be a one-stop shop for anyone who’s looking for beverages,” says De Veer.

Indian cuisine is a combination of many subtle flavors. Dishes are as varied as the climates of India, and as exotic as its people. Fragrant, pungent, and warm spices are delicately blended in meticulous proportions to create their dishes. Spices are prepared fresh every day so that each individual dish has its distinctive flavor and aroma. Tandoor’s traditional dishes are rooted in the soil of northern India, and the kitchen prepares them here in the same way as the chefs would in their own homes. Tandoor’s many delectable dishes may taste indulgent but they also are healthy.

BEHIND THE MASK
S
o often, the most extraordinary travel discoveries are the ones that occur when you least expect them. From the outside looking in, The Mask in the Paseo Herencia Shopping & Entertainment Center appears to be a typical souvenir shop specializing in painted wooden art pieces. People might walk right by without even thinking twice. What The Mask is, and what it actually represents, is something so much more impressive and important than just the average little tourist boutique. On the front walls of this quaint, rectangular storefront hangs a collection of masks of varying shapes, sizes, and colours. Some have mouths agape and eyes wide in surprise. Some look scared or mischievous, and others are smiling and laughing. They are all bright, glossy, and very detailed. Some have floral patterns and others have symbols of animals, suns, and even fruit. Owner and designer Alberto Lopez says that there is always a reason why a customer is drawn to a specific piece and, whatever that reason, the piece is meant for them. “There’s a mythological significance to the masks. They drive evil spirits away and bring good luck. No piece of art is the same, they are all unique and original.” This craftsmanship is part of the history and culture that is known as Mopa Mopa art.
Alberto Lopez — Owner and Designer
the warmth of the artisan’s hands – to a carved wooden mold of a mask. Finally, once the sheet has dried and hardened, shapes and patterns are painstakingly carved onto the surface with a knife. This is done layer upon colorful layer, until the artwork is complete.
Once inside the store, there are more than just colourful masks. Alongside the intricately designed pieces are shelves of carved animals, figures and gods, elaborate totems, beautiful jewelry, jewelry boxes, vases, murals and much more. Although these items all look painted, Alberto and Ximena explain that this is not paint at all, but an ancient coloring process that starts with the buds from the Mopa Mopa trees found in the surrounding area where the community lives. “The land is our mother, our roots, it’s everything to us,” says Alberto. The Quillacinga people have been using this elaborate technique and passing it down from generation to generation. As hard as it may be to believe, these extraordinary masks all begin with tree buds. Artisans pick the buds and then place them in boiling water until they become balls of soft resin. The resin balls are then removed and either chewed or milled for another 12 to 14 minutes. Chewing is often preferred because the membrane becomes smoother and the saliva helps the process. Once the artisan has created a softer, more pliable ribbon of resin, the vegetable or mineral color is added. Two artisans then stretch this ribbon into a rectangle with their hands and mouths until the sheets become similar to wet paper, the desired texture. The thin, colored sheet is then applied – using only

“It’s very entertaining to see the reaction of the people coming in. They’re mouths drop open because they can’t believe this exists,” says Ximena. “They come to Aruba and then they find this. A lot of people tell us that this is the only store in Aruba that sells very unique and traditional art.” And she’s absolutely right.

By supporting this art form, it both helps to keep the Quillacingas traditions alive, as well as directly helps the families of the artisans who produce these pieces. “Now they not only have the opportunity to grow as a community, but their children can go to school and they can get an education. It’s not like before when the young people didn’t know how to write. Now with this, the children can get more opportunities. It’s so important,” explains Ximena. The 17 families that produce this art for The Mask, almost 70 people in total, can also raise their standards of living and become a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous community.

It seems that The Mask in Aruba has indeed brought good luck, along with recognition for the artists of the Quillacinga tribe who live on the borders of Columbia and Ecuador. It is this group of people that created the art form and began this tradition of maskmaking over 2000 years ago. Alberto and his family, notably his daughter Ximena, are part of this culture and work with a community of 17 families to support this art, as well as to teach people about the Quillacinga history, the Mopa Mopa traditions, and share the artwork with the world.
“We have one of the most important arts in the world,” says Alberto, and it certainly is striking. A lot of the designs and patterns carry with them some of the tribe’s cultural and mythological symbolism. The Quillacingas worshiped the sun and the moon as gods, and images of the sun show that it has eight distinct tips. Each tip has a specific meaning: fertility, eternity, happiness, health, victory, wealth, power, and kindness. The sun is a re-occurring image in Mopa Mopa art and is believed to bring good fortune.

ON THE SCENT OF SUCCESS
A
ruba poses an interesting challenge for the luxury retailer. The cruise ships and their passengers are docked in Oranjestad, while package tourists and time-share vacationers loll on the beaches further north. Two different locales, two different kinds of clientele. Penha, one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated purveyors of cosmetics, eyewear, and fashion accessories, has responded to this challenge as you might expect. They have put together a lovely set of boutiques just behind the Renaissance Mall in the Plaza Daniel Leo, arguably the most picturesque and intriguing part of Oranjestad. At the same time, they have staked their claim to some of the choicest locations in the Palm Beach Plaza, Aruba’s swank answer to the best of Miami shopping. A new MAC store has gone in there and is already a success, thanks to the plaza’s generously late closing times that work to attract throngs of the well-heeled and the well-fed. Some of the most meticulously made-up faces can be found taking in the sun around Aruba’s chicest pools, and odds are Penha’s products are involved.
Customer service is key to building customer loyalty, and Penha makes sure that the staff of its boutiques are well-trained. “Our people are always learning about new products and new trends. It’s essential.” The trends, Penha’s spokeswoman further contends, are more global than regional, pointing out that American customers have the same sort of needs and wants as their Latin American counterparts. Founded in 1865, Penha has spent a century and a half building an enviable reputation for luxury retail throughout the Caribbean. Although Aruba is elemental to Penha’s strategic plan of expansion, their landmark store is on Curaçao. It is housed in the most photographed
Recently Penha opened their 22nd boutique in the Caribbean, choosing the Grand Caymans, where the clientele is primarily locals. This is not simply a company with staying-power, but one that chases relentless ambition. The romance of a by-gone era will only get you so far in an age where information, people, and fads move faster and faster. Tradition and history may speak to authenticity for older clientele, but the young live in the moment. A smart retailer builds loyalty by offering clients a total experience of the brand and all that it promises here and now. Every Penha boutique is open and inviting, with plenty of space for customers to browse and linger. There’s nothing snobbish or blatantly trendy about them. You can see the merchandise and, more importantly, you imagine how you will be transformed by the merchandise. I’ve watched people linger in the eyewear section, test-driving their new tan with a selection of different luxury sunglasses from Gucci, Versace, and Ralph Lauren. They’re having a great time, as well they should.
Penha also publishes its own magazine, each issue featuring a different celebrity from a different medium, all attesting to the mystical power of fashion. These are the luminaries that today’s youth envy for their looks and their lifestyle. Penha offers itself as the magic carpet to dreaming that dream, and men are not to be excluded. “We have plenty of men, straight men coming into MAC who want powders just like their women,” offers Penha’s representative. I wanted to laugh, but then I remembered that I had just finished scrubbing my own face. I also found myself swooning in the cologne section of the Penha website, anxious to find out more about Mont Blanc’s Emblem Intense, a scent I know does its appointed job. Indeed, Penha has created a sweet spot in its marketing, one that invites both men and women to embrace beauty, along with the good vibrations that proper grooming can produce. My fair gentleman, even if you turn your nose up at the entertainment industry, might I remind you that the sporting world is full of dandies and metrosexuals who enjoy the company and consort of some very pretty and accomplished women. What man doesn’t want to look good for a lady, who later could be slipping between the sheets in a lovely little nothing from Victoria’s Secret? Vacations are for winding down, romping in the surf, looking good, and discovering how good someone else looks in an elegant nightie.

building on the Handelskade, and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list of buildings. When you shop at Penha, you are shopping in the heart of Caribbean colonial history.

The trappings of luxury have never been more accessible. Aruba, located just off the coast of Venezuela, is where Latin Americans come to chase style and beauty. “They love beauty, they love to look pampered,” suggests a spokeswoman for Penha. “They want powders to keep their skin from looking oily or shiny because we are in the tropics. And we sell a lot of matte lipstick as well. During a recent music festival, we set up make-up booths by the pool at the Renaissance Hotel. Latin ladies love MAC, they love Victoria’s Secret. And they expect superior customer service like you’d get in Europe.”

Every movement of the wrist sets the rotor in motion, winding the watch, so SISTEM51 features an ‘automatic’, or ‘self-winding’ movement. Even when laid to rest for a while, it keeps on going for an exceptional 90 hours. SWATCH SISTEM51 is the revolutionary mechanical watch that turns the old watch world upside down.
