In 1912 Renzo Frau transformed a seat cover into an international passport to success. Since hen Pelle Frau® leather has been the key ingredient in a unique global story of historic values and contemporary moods, elegance, comfort and prestige. The “iconic material” of timeless archetypes, Pelle Frau® leather preserves the original and natural softness of the fi nest coats to guarantee its inimitable aesthetic and tactile qualities, as well as its durability. Guaranteeing the highest quality standards, Pelle Frau® is strictly natural full-grain leather, the outer layer, the most valuable part of the dermis, with pores either partially or completely uncovered, soft, resistant to light, and dyed right through. Pelle Frau® leather is divided up into nine collections dedicated
to the living space. Each type has distinctive qualities in terms of its hand, feel, warmth and appearance. In the general catalogue of a company that, like Poltrona Frau, has existed for more than 100 years, there are products that are always bound to stand the test of time and become to some degree archetypal and eternal. This is why we have decided to call them “Icons”. They are no longer just extremely well designed and comfortable armchairs, chairs or sofas, but have become symbols. Light stitching that traces out a smile. Clean cuts that bring out the tactile quality of the hide and leather. Lightness of form and, above all, the sensory charm of leather. Shell in moulded curved beech plywood. Padding in polyurethane foam. Legs are in wenge-coloured solid ash wood and sports the new Moka finish. The internal part of the shell is covered in Pelle Frau® leather. In elegant contrast the external surface is in Cuoio Saddle Extra. Two different materials that enhance each other when sewed together with clean-cut edges. On the back of the seat the visible stitching traces a delicate motif and hides the zipper which, like an impeccable tailor-made suit, is used to close the cover. The seat is also available in a version completely covered in Pelle Frau® leather.

Sinuous and compact design. Ginger Ale is the most informal and simplified variant of the Ginger, ideal as dining room chair. The outer shell is made of moulded thermoplastic composite polymer, and is available in the colours “anthracite”, as well as “cement” or “chalk” from the general catalogue. The padding is in polyurethane foam and the inner surface of the seat is upholstered in Pelle Frau® leather from the Color System. The 4-spoke column base is made of steel with black plastic tips for the fixed or swivel versions. The latter is equipped with a shock-absorbing device and automatically returns to the starting position.

Designed in 1965, the ‘Dezza’ armchair sums up some of the most important design canons of Ponti: in formal terms as it features the legs with its characteristic tapered triangular section and in methodological terms for its revolutionary “system modularity”, by menas of a limited number of pieces. It is interesting to know that by the time he designed Dezza and its variants at age 74, Ponti was living on the top floor of a building located in Via Dezza, in Milan. Support structure in seasoned beech with polyurethanefoam padding. Seat sprung with elasticcloth. Cushions for seat and backrest in polyurethanefoam and Dacron. The ends of the assemblyelements on the sides are in chrome-plated brass.

The enveloping design is exalted by the free play of folds that the leather creates across all of the internal part of the backrest, making it pleasantly undulating. The precious contrasting stitching along the seams and on the external surfaces of the upholstery creates a refined elegance. The frame of the backrest and seat is in steel with moulded polyurethane foam padding, and shaped foam with polyester wadding in the zones where more comfort is needed. Springing is obtained from elastic belts and the base is made up of four feet in cast aluminium with a tubular steel frame in a gunmetal grey finish. The upholstery is in Pelle Frau® leather. An invitation to meditate and relax.

The springing of the seasoned beech wood seat consists of double-cone steel springs that are individually tied and attached to jute webbing. Mamy Blue, even in its swivel version, has its support base with 4 feet in solid wengé-stained ash wood. As a harmonious accessory to the armchair, the pouf combines the Saddle Extra hide of the lower part with the Pelle Frau® leather used on the upper surface. The sofa in its modern evolution. Each and every element of Massimosistema is upholstered on all sides and can be used just as well alone or as part of a composition. On the large surfaces, the quilted stitching that marks the seats continues along the backrests and armrests. Elegance, versatility and comfort do the rest. The base structure is in poplar and beech. The backrest and armrest structure is in birch plywood and solid poplar wood. The backrest and armrests are padded in polyurethane foam and polyester wadding. Seat cushions are in goose down and polyester staple with a polyurethane foam insert, whilst backrest cushions are in goose down. Feet made of nylon in a glossy black or ruthenium finished steel.

Jean-Marie Massaud takes inspiration from the world of saddlery and design GranTorino. A modular sofa with an exquisite, original version that combines Saddle Extra Leather with Pelle Frau® leather or fabric. Hand-cut, hand-shaped leather closely moulds the lines and structure of the seat. The high and slim armrest also presents intricate, careful workmanship. The cushions have beautiful horizontal stitching in the centre, which gives the sofa a sense of visual lightness. Comfortable seats, compact, well-cut shapes that reduce the overall dimensions to a minimum, and subtle T-shaped feet that are hidden from view and raise the frame off the ground. The GranTorino frame is in tubular metal with interwoven elastic straps. The backrests and armrests are made of birch and poplar plywood.

Jean-Marie Massaud revisits the compositional language of the GranTorino HB sofa to give form to the GranTorino Bed. The headboard is on the generous size, becoming a distinctive feature. Its large surface area and discreet X-stitching almost create a kind of panelling effect. Despite this, its thickness is kept in check to provide a sense of lightness. The frame for the headboard is in pine slats and MDF with a crossbeam in multilayer birch and strips of solid beech, with rear padding in polyurethane foam and quilted padding on the front in polyester wadding and polyurethane foam. The bedframe is in pine slats and MDF, lightly padded with polyurethane foam. The combinations between materials are very sophisticated. It can be upholstered in Pelle Frau® leather or in two diff erent materials. The feet are in titanium-colour painted steel.

An enveloping and protective shell-like geometry which finds its natural completion in the simple lines of the base and frame, the bed is realised in poplar plywood and is lightly padded with polyurethane foam and polyester wadding. The inlay work that is a feature of the new “Bolero” dining table can also be seen on the surfaces of all of the “Fiorile” cofee tables, produced from birch plywood with an ash veneer. According to the geometries of the table, the grain changes to form a different design each time. The faintly trapeze like shape of this table accentuates the visual perception of a thickness reduced to the minimum. The frame supporting the table is in wengé-stained solid ash with a triangular section profile. The mounting plates and spacers are in black lacquered steel. Protective caps. The table top surface is in rotary-cut wengé-stained ash veneer with a characteristic cross-grain inlay and a wengé-stained solid ash trim around the edge. The table top core is in MDF board and underneath it is offset in veneer. The under-top support is in multiply birch finished with matt black textured scratch-proof paint. In the marble version, the legs of the table are in ash in a wengé stain.

Dido is a new lamp, a reworking of the classic lampshade typology. The structure on its rectangular base gives the glass a clean line, echoed in the squared-off shade made from ice coloured fabric. Holly The floor lamps play with soft, soaring lines, as the stem of the Holly lamp. A stylised woman’s profile supports the lampshade. The glass mutates as solid appears liquid, moulding itself into volumes and voids of exquisite visual beauty. The lampshade is double layered and covered with ivory coloured fabric.

The furniture catalogue that Gastone Rinaldi put together for RIMA in the mid-50s was largely dedicated to seats: armchairs, chairs and sofas. However, there were also a number of extremely finely-measured incursions into the world of accessories, including small serving tables, magazine holders and the T 904 bench. This product type was quite rare in Italy at the time and Rinaldi probably took his inspiration from Nordic culture. Originally, the T 904 was a side table (as suggested by the code) which can, however, be moved around using the handles. With cushions, it becomes a seat. In vintage photos, Rinaldi places two of the three cushions on top of each other to create a kind of armrest for those who wish to sit and always leaves part of the surface free for a glass or a magazine.
