Letter From Make-a-Wish Foundation I wish to go…… to Paris! When 17-year old Rebecca was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain disease, she and her family were in dire need of some good news. That’s when Make-A-Wish® stepped in and shed some sunshine on their lives!
Rebecca said that the best part was “just getting to be in Paris and experiencing everything that I dreamed about when I was in the hospital.”
Between treatments, Rebecca was visited by Make-A-Wish volunteers who asked her what her most heartfelt wish was. She thought back to the previous summer when a group of her friends travelled to Paris. Rebecca was unable to go with them at the time, but ever since, she had envisioned visiting all the incredible places they had been, such as Disneyland Paris, the Eiffel Tower and Versailles. She also dreamed of shopping on the Champs-Élysées. Of course, she told the volunteers that her wish was - to go to Paris!
Once they arrived, Rebecca, her brother, and parents enjoyed the French cuisine, shopped at the incredible stores along the Champs-Élysées, went to the top of the Eiffel Tower and even walked through the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.
Rebecca’s mom Debbie reflected, “The trip really made Rebecca forget about everything going on with her illness. And, it was a much-needed break for the entire family.” Rebecca, who recently spent time as an intern at Make-A-Wish, still thinks back to the experience as a turning point in her illness, “Make-AWish really made me forget about being sick, and just focus on the joy of being in a place I always dreamed of. It also made me realize there were people out there who really cared about me.” Make-A-Wish® grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
Make-A-Wish Metro New York and Western New York wishes to thank Jennifer Wilson-Buttigieg for introducing them to Catherine Laleuf and the “In French with English Subtitles” Annual Film Festival. We thank “I FWES” for their continued support and generous donation to Make-A-Wish. For more information, visit: www.metrony.wish.org 6

Honorary President Pascal Elbé Actor & Director
A guest of the first edition of In French With English Subtitles as an actor, Pascal Elbé returned the following year to present his first feature film as a director. As our Honorary President, he will be joining us again this year. Totalizing 45 films as an actor and 4 as a writer, Pascal Elbé is pursuing a successful career that began on the stage. He became a hit in 2003 thanks to the heartwarming comedy, Père et fils, directed by Michel Boujenah, in which he played one of Philippe Noiret’s three sons. Hearthrob in some roles (Tout pour plaire, 2002, by Cecile Telerman), and best buddy in others (Mes amis, mes amours, 2006), he plays with the image of the handsome man in the gay comedy Comme les autres (2008). When he decided to direct his first film, Tête de turc (Turk’s Head, 2009), he gave the lead role to Roschdy Zem, who directed him in Mauvaise foi (Bad Faith, 2006). In 2011, Pascal Elbé gave his voice to the French
version of African Cats (Félins), a documentary produced by Disney. In 2012 he had the leading role in two feature films: Le Fils de l’autre (The Other Son) directed by Lorraine Lévy and La Cerise sur le gâteau (The Cherry on the Cake), directed by italian actress Laura Morante.

JAMES HUTH James Huth, an atypical director in the French cinema world, uses both Anglo-Saxon influences as well as those from cartoons in his kaleidoscopic films that can’t help but be noticed. From Serial Lover to Lucky Luke, we see him again and again as a creator of unidentifiable film objects. James Huth had two lives. Until he was 25 he was a serious student who placed at the top of the entrance exams for Medicine and a brilliant dental surgeon who followed in his father’s footsteps. In spite of all that, he made a career switch, directing his first short film, Télécommandes, and then another the next year, Big Dream. He then took on his first feature film, in 1998, Serial Lover, with Michèle Laroque and Albert Dupontel. This jarring comedy is about a woman who, without wanting to, kills her lovers, in a gory setting tinged with ferocious black humor. In 2005 he came back to directing, thanks to Jean Dujardin who asked him to adapt his character, Brice de Nice for the cinema. This film, which is “way out there” was an enormous success at the box office and generated a huge number of cult copies.
FILMOGRAPHY Director 2011 Un bonheur n’arrive jamais seul Happiness Never Comes Alone 2009 Lucky Luke 2007 Hellphone 2005 Brice de Nice The Brice Man 1998 Serial Lover
Two years later, James Huth made Hellphone with JeanBaptiste Maunier. In 2009 the director teamed up again with his favorite comedian, Jean Dujardin to make the film version of the French comic series, Lucky Luke, before trying his hand at a romantic comedy in 2011, bringing together Sophie Marceau and Gad Elmaleh.
SONJA SHILLITO Writer, screenwriter and producer, Sonja Shillito co-wrote and produced James Huth’s last three films: Hellphone, Lucky Luke and Happiness Never Comes Alone. She also wrote the words to “How Could I Let
You Go,” sung by Gad Elmaleh in Happiness Never Comes Alone. A writer as well, her novel, Silence, On s’aime, written about a couple from their two different points of view, was published by Fayard in 2001.

GAD ELMALEH Gad Elmaleh grew up in Casablanca (Morocco) and speaks fluently French, Arabic and Hebrew. He is very proud of this multi-faceted heritage. His father, who was a mime, was his great inspiration. Gad Elmaleh left his native country at 17 to study political science in Montreal. After a year he switched to the Arts and started writing comedy routines that he performed on the radio and in night clubs. At 21, after graduating, he was accepted at the Cours Florent in Paris in 1992. In 1996 he produced his first one-man show, Décalages, which, for the most part, drew from his experiences in Canada. In the same year he appeared in his first feature-length film, Hey Cousin!, directed by Merzak Allouache. Alternating between comedies and dramas, Gad Elmaleh devoted all his energy to his work. In 2000, he plays the role of Dov, formerly played by Vincent Elbaz, in You Shouldn’t Worry! 2. The success of that film brought him the acclaim of France’s favorite comedian. In 2003, Chouchou, the film adaptation of his triumphant second one-man show, La Vie Normale about the romantic transvestite, captivated nearly four million viewers. Gad Elmaleh’s next role was François Pignon in Francis Veber’s, The Valet. In 2009 he directed his first feature film, Coco, a cinematic adaptation of the adventures of one of the main characters of his one-man shows, a businessman who will go to any length, even the most far-fetched, to make sure that his son can have the most unforgettable bar mitzvah. In 2010, Gad Elmaleh started playing more serious roles, as in The Roundup. Since 2011 he has been seen in several American films, including Midnight In Paris, The Adventures of Tintin and The Dictator. In 2012, Gad Elmaleh stars in Costa- Gavras’ Capital after which he acted under the direction of Michel Gondry in his dreamlike adaptation of L’Écume des jours (Foam of the Daze, to be released in 2013).

“Never has Sophie Marceau had as many falls, and probably never has she been as beautiful. Gad Elmaleh gives Sacha his charm as well as his talents as a pianist and as a humorist; in a scene where he has to put Charlotte’s son to bed he demonstrates his masterful art of the comedy of the silent film.” Cécile Mury, Télérama “A perfectly executed little romantic comedy, that has the distinction of not making too much of itself. It takes us through all the essential stages that lead a bohemian artist (…) into the arms of a slightly uptight and very bourgeois woman (…), in the animated rhythm of a fetishistic homage to the golden age of sophisticated Hollywood comedies.” Romain Blondeau, Les Inrockuptibles IN FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES 2012

Two sisters plan to kidnap their mother so she’ll be forced to love them. The violent nature of the film’s concept masks the fact that it’s really a comedy, even if it does sometimes take harrowing turns. As grown women, these two sisters are still traumatized by their intemperate and harsh mother who has decided to inflict herself upon them. Faced with this threat, they mobilize to put a stop to their mother’s tyranny. QUOTES Josiane Balasko, Actress “To portray such a negative personality was very appealing. My character didn’t torture her kids, just mistreated them psychologically, in truth by just simply ignoring them. She was still a human being with weakness as well as good qualities. So, I played this humorless woman in a non- judgmental way. In any case, I never judge my characters. I treated her like a fictitious person, taking inspiration from people I know or from what Alexandra told me.” REVIEWS “Mum (…) becomes a terrific film after just the first few minutes (…) a cruel and yet touching story, with a flawlessly nasty Josiane Balasko, up against the Marina Foïs-Mathilde Seigner duo, who compliment each other to a tee.”

Suffocated by her parents who shower her with affection and stuff her with food, Rachel, still only 9 years old, is counting the minutes until she’ll be a free adult … until one day her path crosses that of the intrepid Valérie. Why did you have your film take place in the ‘80’s? “Since the character of the father had been deported as a child, it would have been impossible to have the story take place at any other time. However, it’s true that I have an enormous fondness for that period. It’s my childhood, my youth, it’s nostalgia for a kind of gentleness of spirit. It’s a fun era to film. And what’s more, you don’t have to have any scenes with cell phones.”

Both an actor and a director, Roschdy Zem is a major figure in French cinema. Alternating between doing art house films and big budget ones, those he chooses to direct have eminently political themes. Roschdy Zem, whose passions range from sports to the theater, hails from Morocco. In 1987, he appeared as an extra in Les Keufs, even though he had no intention of becoming an actor. After having been spotted a few years later by one of André Techiné’s assistants, he landed a few small parts in the films, I Don’t Kiss and My Favorite Season, all the while being involved in the theater. It was after he reached thirty that his career really took off, thanks to two noteworthy films, Don’t Forget You are Going to Die by Xavier Beauvois and En avoir (Ou pas), released in 1995. As an actor he plays in a wide variety of genres: in social dramas, such as My Little Business by Jolivet for which he was nominated for a César for best supporting actor, in mainstream movies such as Go Fast and Chouchou, or in psychological dramas such as Ordo. In 2006, he is awarded Best Male performance in Cannes, along with his fellow actors, for Days Of Glory. The same year, he directs his first feature film, Bad Faith, the chronicle of a bicultural couple. In 2010 the critics raved over his performances in Turk’s Head. In 2011, Roschdy Zem directed his second film, a poignant story inspired by the Omar Raddad affair, about a gardener, wrongly accused of murdering his employer. The film has been selected as the Moroccan entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards®.

What give the power, the richness of “Armed Hands”, is the human element.” François Forestier, Le Nouvel Observateur Pierre Jolivet has come up with materiel for a film that contrasts between the toughness of a detective story and the delicateness of secret feelings expressed by looks, silences. If we could live our childhood all over again, would we then change the course of events?
How did you choose the young actor who plays yourself as a child? “For the role of the little boy, we were limited by my own adult physical characteristics, since he, of course, had to look like me. It was the casting director who found him: he had acted in Mickael Haneke’s film, The White Ribbon. Although I’d convinced myself that it would be very hard to find someone to fit the part, it was clear that he was the obvious choice.” REVIEWS

HERVÉ MIMRAN FILMOGRAPHY Director 2011 Nous York 2009 Tout ce qui brille / All That Glitter
Hervé Mimran began his career in the cinema in 1992 as assistant cameraman for the short film, Dansons sur le ring. He then worked in television where he directed the show, “La Minute Blonde” until 2006. It was that year that he met Géraldine Nakache on the set of Hey, Good Looking! for which he was a co-writer. It was the actress’s first role and a crucial connection for them both. Four years later they wrote and directed All that Glitters in which two young women, attracted by the chic life of Paris try their hand at living there. Not only did the film win Mimran several prizes, but it brought recognition to a new generation of actors, one of whom was Leïla Bekhti who won a César for Best up and coming Actress. In 2012, with friendship still the filmmaker’s favorite theme, he and his accomplice Géraldine Nakache set out to make the comedy, Nous York. This time it’s not just a girl duo, but a group of buddies since childhood who get together in the city of New York to celebrate one of their birthday.

MANU PAYET Manu Payet was known first by his voice. He began his career as a radio announcer on Reunion Island, where he comes from. N RJ Paris spotted him and in 2002 he was recruited to host their morning show. For four years he ran the most popular radio show in France and his great sense of humor, along with those of Bruno Guillon, and Florian Gazan delighted the public. In 2003 Manu Payet got into television doing parody shows for Comedy! channel. He did a one-man show in 2007 and in the next year had his movie debut in Hello Goodbye. For his next role he was the voice of the main character in the French version of the Dreamworks animated film, Kung Fu Panda. In 2009 Manu Payet was in Coco, written and starred in by Gad Elmaleh, but his first major roles were in 2010 when he played alongside Géraldine Nakache and Leïla Bekhti in All that Glitters, and then in The Perfect Date with Clovis Cornillac and Virginie Efira. On the heels of these contemporary stories, Manu Payet put on tights and traveled back in time to act in Les Aventures de Philibert, Capitaine Puceau (2011) a movie pastiche of the age of chivalry by Sylvain Fusée. In the same year he took on a more somber tone in the comedy/drama, The Day I saw your Heart, a story which puts Michel Blanc and Mélanie Laurent at odds.

GÉRALDINE NAKACHE After receiving her General Academic Studies Degree in Cinema, Géraldine Nakache started working in television for Canal + where she was casting director for the show, “Groland”, before becoming assistant director for the “Guignols de l’Info” skits. In 2000 she became executive producer of the Comedy! channel. From 2003 to 2005 she played in “Starloose Academy” and “La Téloose”, two shows that parodied TV shows. Her movie career started in 2006 with Lisa Azuelos’ comedy, Hey, Good Looking!, in which she commiserates with Michèle Laroque, Aure Atika and Valérie Benguigui over their disappointments in love. In 2008 she took on a role in Alexandre Arcady’s Tu peux garder un secret ?. In 2008 and 2009, the actress played back to back in three comedies: Every Jack Has A Jill, a romantic comedy with Mélanie Laurent, So Close So Far, co-directed by her brother, and Day Off, about the misadventures of Kad Merad during his vacation. In 2010 the naturally talented actress proved herself to be as gifted as director with the very popular comedy All that Glitters, which she co-directed with Hervé Mimran and which was a huge success. In this film that portrays the tumultuous friendships of young girls in the Paris suburbs, Géraldine Nakache starred alongside Leïla Bekhti and Audrey Lamy. Her resulting popularity brought her roles in 2011 in The Day I Saw Your Heart by Jennifer Devoldère, then in 2012 with her band of city buddies in the film of shorts sketches, Players. Following that, she joined the adventures of Marsupilami. At the end of 2012, Géraldine Nakache again sat in the director’s chair alongside her cohort, Hervé Mimran, to take on Nous York, an American style comedy.
