Letter From Make-a-Wish Foundation For its third edition, In French With English Subtitles has selected the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York to be part of this event. We are deeply thankful to all the spectators and sponsors who, by being here, will contribute to help make funding available to grant wishes to children with life threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy! Facts about the Foundation® of Metro Western New York.
Make-A-Wish New York &
Mission Statement: We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. General: The Make-A-Wish Foundation is the largest wish-granting organization in the world with 62 chapters in the United States and its territories and 36 international affiliates spanning five continents. Our chapter is one of the busiest Make-A-Wish® chapters in the country, based on the number of wishes granted and operating budget.
11,000 children in our area – more than 2,000 in the Western New York counties and more than 9,000 in the five boroughs of New York City and Nassau County, Long Island. In fiscal year 2011, we touched the lives of 914 wish children and their families by granting 684 wishes of local children and facilitating 230 wish assists for children who reside in other areas, but whose wishes took place in New York - that’s one wish every 10 hours! Wish Referrals: Referrals are made by parents or guardians, members of the medical community or children themselves. Medical eligibility is determined by the child’s primary care physician, who must sign a medical authorization form. We serve children between the ages of 2 ½ and under the age of 18 at time of referral.
History: On April 29, 1980 in Phoenix, a young boy with leukemia realized his heartfelt wish to become a police officer. His dream served as the inspiration for the largest wish-granting organization in the world. He was given a custommade uniform, helmet and badge and spent the day as a police officer. The Metro New York chapter, which served the five boroughs of New York City and Nassau County, Long Island, began in 1983 when 7-year-old Steven’s wish to meet Daisy Duke (actress Catherine Bach) of the popular “Dukes of Hazzard” television show came true. The Western New York chapter was founded in 1992, when a young girl wished to meet country music legend, Reba McIntyre at Melody Fair. The Western New York chapter served children in 17 counties in the Buffalo and Rochester area. In September of 2011 the two chapters joined forces, now serving 23 counties.
Standards: We are proud participants of the Better Business Bureau Charity Seal Program, which indicates that our organization has met the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability. Make-AWish policy prohibits telemarketing and door-to-door solicitations. Our chapter is also the proud recipient of Charity Navigator’s highest rating - 4 Stars – in December of 2010 and is featured as one of the Best 50 Nonprofits to Work for in 2011 in The NonProfit Times Survey of April 2011.
Wishes Granted: Overall, our chapter has touched the lives of more than

YVAN ATTAL Actor, screenwriter, director... Yvan Attal is a multitalented artist. Chosen by top directors for his unique presence and his dedication, he is among the best actors of his generation. Yvan Attal was born in 1965 in Tel Aviv, Israel. His parents, who were Jewish “Pied-Noirs” (French citizens of European origin living in Algeria during colonialization), left the newly independent Algeria to settle in Créteil, on the outskirts of Paris. As a child, Yvan Attal was fascinated by The Godfather movies, his inspiration to eventually pursue a career in the cinema. In 1985, he enrolled at the Cours Florent - a prestigious French drama school - and made his debut on the stage three years later, playing in Biloxi Blues by Neil Simon. The same year, Elie Chouraqui offered him a role in his TV movie, Parlez moi d’Amour. Then in 1989 he made a profound impression on the public as Hippolyte Giradot’s “hustling partner” in Un monde sans pitié, the culte film by Eric Rochant. His performance won him a César for best supporting actor. In 1991, he met and fell in love with Charlotte Gainsbourg during the shooting of Aux yeux du monde. In 1997, the same year that he got the Prix Jean Gabin for best up-and-coming actor in the French cinema, he directed his first short film, I Got a Woman. Four years later he made his first feature length film, Ma femme est une actrice, starring his wife, Charlotte Gainsbourg. Hailed by the critics, the film was a box office hit. In 2003, his winning streak continued with Ils se marierent et eurent beaucoup d’enfants. Since 2005 he’s also been acting in the US with such prestigious directors as Sidney Pollack and Steven Spielberg. From 2008 on he played a variety of roles from that of a Nazi hunter in La Traque to the victim of a kidnapping in Rapt. In 2011, Yvan Attal starred in Polisse, as well as in Dans la tourmente (In Turmoil), and in R.I.F. where he plays alongside Pascal Elbé as a man who is desperately searching for his missing wife. R.I.F. (RECHERCHES DANS L’INTERÊT DES FAMILLES) MISSING PEOPLE’S RESEARCH SCREENING SPONSORED BY
Followed by Q&A with Yvan Attal, actor and Patrick Gimenez, producer Hosted by Jerry Carlson, Professor of film While on holiday, the wife of Stephane Monnereau, chief of the Parisian criminal investigation police, vanishes. Ironically, all the evidence seems to indicate that the husband himself might be involved in her disappearance. In order to avoid being held in custody, Mr. Monnereau flees with his son. From that moment on, his sole purpose is to prove his innocence and to solve the mystery of his wife’s disappearance. The title of the movie R.I.F. refers to the form that has to be filled out before launching an investigation for a missing adult. This particular form differs somewhat from the one that has to be filled out for a minor, since someone over 18 actually has the legal right to “go missing” without notifying his family.

Thomas, a father in his fifties, ends up by pure coincidence in the town he grew up in. He suddenly falls ill and wakes up forty years earlier in his teenage body. Thrust back in time, he not only gets to re-live his first love but has the chance to better understand the cause of his father’s mysterious disappearance. But can we really influence past events by living them again? In his third film, Sam Garbarski takes inspiration from the famous eponymous Jiro Taniguchi’s Manga by shifting the scene from Japan to the old fashioned charm 1950’s France.

TOUS LES SOLEILS SILENCE OF LOVE SCREENING SPONSORED BY
Alessandro, an Italian professor of baroque music, lives in Strasbourg with his 15 year old daughter, Irina, who’s in the midst of her adolescent crisis, and with his brother, Crampone, a gentle but crazy anarchist, obsessed with seeking political refugee status, ever since the beginning of the Berlusconi years. Wanting to be a model father after his wife’s death, he has put his love life on hold, and with his gang of buddies and their burlesque fantasies, he can never find a moment’s peace. Alessandro is completely caught off guard when his daughter feels the first stirrings of love, and suddenly his world is turned upside down….

JENNIFER DEVOLDÈRE FILMOGRAPHY Director 2011 Et soudain, tout le monde me manque The Day I Saw Your Heart 2009 Jusqu’à toi
Jennifer Devoldère’s interest in the cinema goes back to when she was eight years old… After having seen E.T. and Raiders of the Lost Ark, she was determined to follow in the footsteps of Steven Spielberg. Inspired by this childhood fantasy, right after finishing her studies, she made several short films, winding up in the publicity world where she directed ads for various well-known brand names, as well as for humanitarian organizations. In 2009, she wrote and directed her first feature film, Jusqu’à toi, with Mélanie Laurent and Justin Bartha. Her first film conjures up the spirit of such American romantic comedies as Some Like it Hot. Jennifer Devoldère is quoted as saying she likes to inspire chaos in her movies, like in the Italian films of the 50’s, as opposed to the kind we see in contemporary cinema. In 2011, for her second film, The Day I Saw Your Heart, she tells a story of a complicated family situation between a detached father, played by Michel Blanc, and his troubled daughter, portrayed by Mélanie Laurent. In two films now, Mélanie Laurent has played Jennifer Devoldère’s alter ego. What’s more they look alike and one could easily imagine that the actress is a reflection of the director. “Mélanie’s way of expressing herself, her choice of words, her timing and even just her general way of being, affects me. I can hear her voice. She is multi-faceted, and it’s this complexity of hers that I like to focus on. She can be fragile and at the same time have great strength… Show self-confidence, and yet be extremely sensitive. In all honesty, I have a very strong bond with her.”

Followed by Q&A with Yvan Attal, Actor Unbeknownst to his workers, the boss of a factory in the Marseille area is making plans not only to relocate the plant, but to embezzle 2 million euros as well. Franck, one of the employees, finds out about it and without telling his wife, Hélène, decides along with his old friend, Max, to take action… . A powerhouse cast (Mathilde Seigner as Helene, Clovis Cornillac as her husband Franck, Yvan Attal as an old buddy) deliver a compelling and realistic working-class drama. A plant-closing in the Marseille region galvanizes workers but ultimately the laws of economics must govern and jobs are on the line. Bitterness sets in and desperate men are driven to do desperate things. Max (already laid-off 2 years before), together with a reluctant Franck, plan to strike back at management by robbing the head honcho of 2 million Euros in cash locked in an office safe. Nothing can supposedly go wrong... . Dans la tourmente (In Turmoil) morphs into a thriller anchored by a deep awareness of social justice. It is also a study of working class life, of relationships, close friendships, and the small pleasures of life, a dense exploration of how modern life challenges one’s fundamental values and tests one’s sense of honour. We begin to care deeply about the characters will they ultimately choose to do the right thing?

As he is on the verge of making the deal of his career, he agrees to have himself filmed by Joseph Klein, a journalist who is both committed and audacious. It is supposed to pay tribute to the genius of a great man. What it ends up being is an astonishing and exhilarating trip behind the scenes in the business world and into the lives of the rich and powerful. Welcome to the world of Michel Ganiant. Tough luck, because it’s also yours… .

The student Ducoboo has been kicked out of school again. To avoid being sent off to boarding school, he has one last chance: he must do well at Saint-Potache. In order to make it through, this likable dunce will have to outdo himself with the most ingenious and spectacular tricks imaginable. Challenges await him, with Mr. Latouche, his formidable teacher, and Léonie, a fierce opponent and the top student from whom he tries to copy, isn’t fooled by his charm for long… . L’Élève Ducobu is inspired by a comic book created by Godi and Zidrou. The sequel is already in production: Les Vacances de Ducobu will open in France in June 2012.
QUOTES Philippe de Chauveron, Director “Ducobu is an anti-hero, which makes it more interesting. We always remember the real creeps and the super dunces more than the good kids.”

ÉRIC LAVAINE Éric Lavaine started his career in television in 1988 with Canal+, where he worked for 10 years. After having written numerous skits for Les Guignols de l’info and “Les Robin des Bois”, he became the artistic director for the screwball medical sitcom H with Jamel Debbouze and Éric & Ramzy, directing a pool of writers for 70 episodes. In 2006, he wrote and directed the series Le 17 with JeanPaul Rouve, Maurice Barthélémy and Jean Benguigui, as well as drafted and wrote 150 episodes of a short program called Faut-il with Maurice Barthélémy. Also in 2006, he directed and wrote the screenplay for his first feature length film, Poltergay, with its star-studded cast of Clovis Cornillac, Julie Depardieu and Lionel Abelanski, in which the fledgling filmmaker’s penchant for slapstick and even politically incorrect comedy is indisputable. In 2009, he directed and co-wrote Incognito with the singer Bénabar from the H series who also had his debut in this film. Then in 2010, he directed Protéger et servir with its accomplished and popular cast featuring Kad Merad, Carole Bouquet, and again Clovis Cornillac. This year Éric Lavaine is back on the scene with his new comedy, Bienvenue à Bord, bringing together some of the most well-known figures of comedy in France with Franck Dubosc and Valérie Lemercier in the lead roles. A fan of Tim Burton, as well as Harold Ramis and the Farrelly brothers, Éric Lavaine also takes his inspiration from such French comedies as the masterpieces of Yves Robert. He is particularly interested in the art of defining and developing characters in the films of Jean-Pierre Bacri and Agnès Jaoul, as well as those of Claude Sautet or of Cédric Klapisch, inspirations which are as diverse as his films.

Followed by Q&A with Éric Lavaine, Director Hosted by Jerry Carlson, Professor of film Isabelle, the Personal Director of a major cruise line, has made the big mistake of getting involved with her boss. Before embarking on the jewel of the fleet on its inaugural cruise, he decides to get rid of her, both as his lover and as his employee. Now some women get their revenge by poisoning, some by shooting, some by spreading rumors, but not Isabelle. Instead she decides to hire Rémy, an inveterate bum who has failed at everything on land and, so why not on the sea too… as entertainment director. He doesn’t let her down and soon becomes her boss’ worst nightmare. But eventually, he finds his true calling… . The making of the film took place over the course of six weeks, on board a real cruise ship. Between the crew of both the ship and of the film, as well as the passengers, almost 4,000 people lived live together in very close quarters.
QUOTES Éric Lavaine, Director “A ship is a floating island, a self-contained place where people can’t help but run into each other over the course of a day. This situation was the perfect set-up for those real and very human stories of love, etc… . My screenwriter, Héctor Cabello Reyes, and I took a week long cruise to immerse ourselves in the atmosphere, and the biggest impression we came away with was that everyone has a great time, they dress up, they dance, they’re happy.” IN FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES 2011

July 2010, Montreal, Canada. Sophie Malaterre, a 25 year old fashion designer, is not looking forward to the summer holidays. She has no plans, no friends, no boyfriend. Then she hears about the website switch.com, which gives her the opportunity to do a house exchange for a month. Miraculously, Sophie finds a duplex in Paris, with view of the Eiffel Tower. Her first day there is idyllic. The next morning though, she is awakened by the cops. A decapitated body is in the room next door and she has no way to prove that she isn’t Bénédicte Serteaux, the owner of the duplex. The trap is closing in on her. Not only has she swapped apartments, but she’s also swapped her body and her destiny as well… .
