Letter From Make-a-Wish Foundation I wish to go…… to the Eiffel Tower!

Sounds of an accordion, the Eiffel Tower, warm sunshine and the brilliant blue sky of Paris - one would say it’s a frame from a movie, but this scenery became perfectly real in Yetunde’s life. It was not easy for 16 year-old Yetunde to pick her perfect wish, but after giving it some thought, she decided that she wanted to visit the Eiffel Tower. “I love everything about it,” she says - “its shape, its structure, it’s so beautiful!” Ideally, she’d have a picnic at the foot of her favorite monument. Soon enough, Yetunde, her parents and an older brother were on their way to the famous City of Light. The entire family agrees that from the first minute of the wish trip, everything was done to make Yetunde feel special. The 7-hour flight passed fast, and voilà! Paris was there waiting for Yetunde to discover all its beauty. “Our hotel was located in the very heart of Paris, so it was really easy to walk around the city,” Yetunde’s father recalls. The Louvre, Notre-Dame de Paris, Champs-Elysées, Arc de Triomphe, and even Disney World Paris – tireless Yetunde visited all the mustsees in one week, making the most of an incredible trip.

And then – there it was - the Eiffel Tower in its full splendor! Yetunde enjoyed a family picnic on a bright green lawn in front of her favorite monument before travelling up to the top of the tower. Looking out upon the breathtaking cityscape, Yetunde recalls: “It was amazing! The scenery was so lovely! It’s an unforgettable feeling when you see the entire city at your feet. It’s definitely my favorite memory of the trip!” “My daughter definitely has changed after her wish was granted,” her father says. “She became more open and started smiling! Make-A-Wish does a fantastic job bringing life to people. We really appreciate what Make-A-Wish did for us. We finally had time to live our lives and be together as a family.” That trip to Paris marked the beginning of a new family tradition: from now on, every year the entire family will set off on a trip to visit other countries. Yetunde can’t wait - there are so many countries to discover, so many books to read, so many happy moments to enjoy! Make-A-Wish® grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Make-A-Wish Metro New York and Western New York wishes to thank Jennifer Wilson-Buttigieg for introducing them to Catherine Laleuf and the “In French with English Subtitles” Annual Film Festival. NICOLAS BEDOS

It is hard to classify Nicolas Bedos. He is before anything else a writer. At the age of 18, he starts as reader and artistic adviser for the TV channel Canal+. He rapidly writes for several programs and directs a series of short fictions called On vous rappellera. At the age of 20, he writes several sketches for his father’s one-man show at the Olympia, the humorist Guy Bedos. This collaboration encourages him to write his first play Sortie de scène, an instant success. He then creates Eva, starring Niels Arestrup and, in October 2009, Le Voyage de Victor, with Masha Méril and staging his own father. In February 2010, he writes Promenade de santé for the theater debuts of Mélanie Laurent. His first screenplays are for the television together with producer Josée Dayan (Folie Douce in 2009, Ni reprise ni échangée in 2010, Bouquet final in 2011). It is for the movie Players (Les Infidèles, 2012) that he writes for the first time for the cinema. SELECTED FILMOGRAPHY 2012

The same year, the author switches for the other side of the camera and plays the role of Antoine, Louise Bourgoin’s unhappy husband in L’Amour dure trois ans by Frederic Beigbeder. He seems to enjoy comedy as he reiterates the experience with Populaire, Regis Roinsard’s first feature movie. In 2012, he plays the lead role in Love in the Air by Alexandre Castagnetti, a film for which he signs the dialogs. He also plays one of the lead roles in L’Art de la fugue by Brice Cauvin to be released in 2014. In parallel to his cinematographic activities, Nicolas Bedos had in 2010 and 2011 a controversial chronic in a weekly TV program. As a result he was frequently invited on other TV sets to talk things over. Columnist for the weekly magazines Marianne and Elle, he published a digest of his chronicles in a collection called Journal d’un mytomane. However, his latest book, La Tête ailleurs, (2013) is a more intimate and less polemical work.

JONATHAN COHEN Jonathan Cohen stumbled upon comedy by chance. As he works as sales rep for a window manufacturer, a friend asks him to come and see him in his theater class. This will be a turning point for Jonathan. He resigns and takes comedy classes, then passes the Conservatoire’s exam and begins his career at the theater. After several dubbing roles, he lands a small role in 2006 in the comedy Comme t’y es belle by Lisa Azuelos. The actor is noticed and hired for the second season of Mafiosa, a series on the mafia in Corsica. In 2010, he stars in Les Invincibles, directed by Alexandre Castagnetti, followed by a role in Le Village des Ombres. On stage in 2011 for L’Entêtement, directed by Marcial DiFonzo and Elise Vigier, he then plays a lead role in Fly Me to The Moon with Dany Boon and Diane Kruger. The following year, Alexandre Castagnetti once again directs Jonathan Cohen in the romantic comedy Love Is In The Air. OFFICIAL AIRLINE SPONSOR OF IFWES 2013

In Paris, Lionel Kasdan, a retired police captain, investigates a strange murder: a choirmaster has been found dead in his church, his eardrums shattered, no witnesses. Frank Salek, an Interpol agent who risks being suspended by his superiors because of his excessive behavior, is on the trail of a secret organization that specializes in kidnapping children. When Salek hears about the choirmaster’s death, he thinks he’s found a link with his own investigation and accepts to team up with Kasdan. But the more the investigation progresses, the more Salek seems to lose his footing, as though caught up by a deeply buried secret. From then on, the two men will plunge into an affair that finds its source in World War Two’s darkest hours. VIRGINIE EFIRA Virginie Efira starts her career in Belgium as an actress, then as a TV host. She arrives in France in 2003 to present several TV reality shows. In 2008 she decides to dedicate her time to her first love: acting. TV gives her a chance by giving her a part in a TV film, Un amour de fantôme, in 2006. The following year, the young actress throws herself in Off Prime, a TV series that shows the near-real life of Virginie Efira, a show that will last two seasons. She appears in her first feature film Barons (Les Barons), then plays the role of a not-so-stupid bimbo in Le Siffleur with Thierry Lhermitte and François Berléand. In 2009, she lands two first roles in the romantic comedies The Perfect Date (L’Amour, c’est mieux à deux), where she is taken aback by Clovis Cornillac who only believes in finding the great love of his life, and Second Chance (La Chance de ma vie), where she lives a frustrated love with François-Xavier Demaison. After having played a part in the play Nathalie, an adaptation by Anne Fontaine, she stars in the director’s movie My Worst Nightmare (Mon pire Cauchemar) with Benoît Poelvoorde and Isabelle Huppert in 2011. In It Boy (20 ans d’écart, 2012), she is a “cougar” seducing the young Pierre Niney. In 2012 and 2013, she plays next to movie stars such as François Berléand (Dead Man Talking), Gérard Depardieu (The Invincibles) and François Cluzet (En Solitaire).

Followed by Q&A with Virginie Efira, Actress Hosted by Jerry Carlson, Professor of film Forty-year-old William Lamers, an anonymous criminal sentenced to death for murder is soon to be executed. The procedure is about to take place in an atmosphere of general indifference and neither the condemned man’s family nor the relatives of his victims have bothered to come to witness the execution. Only a journalist from local newspaper has turned up to watch the “show.” As the law does not define the duration a condemned prisoner’s final words, Lamers will take advantage of this legal void to unwind the story of his life to avoid the death sentence. What was a mere formality rapidly becomes the major issue of a political campaign.

If Julie Ferrier belongs to a family with generations of actors, it is in a dance tutu that she discovers the world of showbiz. She then attends Annie Fratellini’s circus school. She starts to follow acting classes at the age of 15 years. Ten years later, she launches her acting career thanks to Isabelle Nanty, who directs her in a one-woman-show. She makes her first appearance on the big screen thanks to Didier Bourdon in Madame Irma in 2005. This first role leads to more as Julie plays in Un Château en Espagne, Didine, Daddy Cool, all released in 2007; before being on the billboard for bigger projects such as Cedric Kapish’s Paris or Micmacs by JeanPierre Jeunet in 2008 in which she plays the role of a contortionist, Môme Caoutchouc. The following year, she manages the business of Romain Duris with François Damiens in Heartbreaker. She then plays her own role in Mathieu Amalric’s On Tour. The actress keeps the momentum in 2011 dubbing Madame Carlotta for the animation movie A Monster in Paris, making an appearance on the TV series Chez Maupassant. She comes back to comedy, her specialty, with De l’Huile sur le Feu, where she plays opposite Vincent Lacoste, a rising star, and in 2012, she brings a lot of nuances to her role of a betrayed wife by Fred Testot in Sea, Sex and Sun.

CINEMATOGRAPHER

Once upon a time in 2012, three brothers lived happily. One day their mom fell into a coma. So Henri, Philippe, and Louis suddenly started wondering about the meaning of their lives and were swamped by a wave of existential doubts. An entirely new situation for this bourgeois trio in their forties, one which opened a door to the novel and indeed the forbidden... and to the big bad wolf! Remake of 3 p’tits cochons, a Quebec film directed in 2008 by Patrick Huard, this comedy inspects adult life - with a hint of impertinence – a life that is not so far from a children’s fairy tale.

BOULE ET BILL BILLY AND BUDDY SCREENING SPONSORED BY

Everything begins at the SPCA. A young cocker spaniel lies dejectedly in his cage. He can’t find the master of his dreams. Suddenly, a young boy appears, his hair as red as the cocker spaniel’s coat. Birds of a feather stick together: it’s love at first sight. For Billy and Buddy, it’s the beginning of a great friendship. For Billy’s parents it’s the beginning of trouble... and … of a great family adventure!

REVIEW “To adapt a reference such as this Belgium cartoon to the cinema is simply an achievement. (…) Two directors took up the challenge with flying colors (…). Kids will enjoy themselves and parents will be outdone, as they will remember with nostalgia the time of their youth. “Billy and Buddy” is presented as a popular movie perfect for the whole family…” Sébastien Schreurs, A voir-à lire.com

There are those who say that the Malaussène clan are strange, shady, abnormal. But, when you look closely, you note that happiness reigns in this joyfully chaotic family ruled over by a mother who is endlessly falling in love and who has had children by men spread out all over the place. For Benjamin Malaussène, a professional scapegoat in a department store, and the oldest brother responsible for this brood, life is never boring. But when accidents occur wherever he passes by, attracting the attention of the police and his work colleagues, it rapidly becomes vital for him to know why and how these things keep happening, and above all who has got it in for him.

How did the idea of the film emerge? I wanted to tell a story about a human being facing an extreme situation and to show how he would reveal to himself. A soldier steps on a Russian mine with double impulse fuze and is trapped in the Afghan desert: What a great start! More than a war or action movie, Trapped is a movie about survival. Your family was in the Army, did that affect your choice?

FILMOGRAPHY Yannick Saillet, Director 2013 Piégé Trapped

It certainly did but with delayed action! I was not aware of it when I drafted the storyline with Jérémie Galan, one of my friends nor when I further worked on the script with Vincent Crouzet. This spy novel writer who specializes in geopolitics, more precisely in guerillas, helped us to make Sergeant Denis Quillard (played by Pascal Elbé) situation real. Only nine months later I realized that I did not choose this subject only by chance.
