That’s when former Morningside coach Jim Harrick did the unthinkable and led the Bruins to the only NCAA title not won by John Wooden.

Harrick, currently an assistant coach at Cal State Northridge, is just a footnote in the annals of UCLA sports lore.

He has not been celebrated or truly respected for being the only living coach to win an NCAA title other that the Wizard of Westwood.

Shortly before the 1996 season, UCLA fired Harrick for lying about who attended a recruiting dinner. At the time, Harrick was the secondwinningest coach in school history.

Harrick came on the heels of a dismal reign after Walt Hazzard.

Steve Lavin took over from 1996 to 2003, compiled a record of 145–78.

He was one of only two coaches in the country to lead his team to five NCAA “Sweet 16s” in six years (1997, 1998, 2000–2002), the other coach being Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. Lavin guided UCLA to six consecutive seasons of 20 or more wins, as well as six consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, but it was not good enough.

Ben Howland, a coach who employed a similar style as current mentor Mick Cronin, went to back to back Final Fours defeating the likes of Gonzaga and Kansas in the process.

Howland got fired and Steve Alford introduced UCLA being an 11 seed.

Alford was shown the door and after the Lakers brought LeBron from Ohio, the Bruins went to Cincinnati and got the highly successful mid major coaching star Cronin.

Few blinked, and no one really cared.

Some scoffed would be Howland lite, installing a grinding scheme of defensive intensity in a region that loves the run and gun.

Just two years in Cronin has changed the culture at UCLA and is demonstrating that if he can keep UCLA in games, the talent will win close games and that is what has transpired in this run that led the Bruins to The Final Four against top seed Gonzaga on April 3.

I love that Cronin has openly embraced the challenge of winning it all, and that getting to this point does not happen often. There are no guarantees the Bruins will ever return.

That is why it is incumbent to win it all.

Regardless the odds stacked against him and the 11 seed Bruins which entered the tournament as a contingent of the First Four on its way to knocking off No. 2 seed Alabama and No. 1 seed Michigan.

Gonzaga is a different animal, but UCLA has heard that before and have relished being the underdog. The Bulldogs thumped UCLA rival USC by 19 in the Elite Eight. UCLA would love to smash Gonzaga and then win National Title No. 12.

Nobody expects them to win anyway.

Congresswoman Waters Speaks Out Against Anti-Asian Violence, Participates in National Day of Action and Healing

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Inglewood), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, joined with Reps. Judy Chu, Lucille Roybal-Allard, Karen Bass, and Norma Torres for the “LA Speaks Out Against AAPI Hate” virtual event.

This event included remarks from elected officials, victims of hate who courageously shared their stories, and organizations that provided information on how to report incidents and ultimately help address this issue.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters delivered the following remarks at the event: “Thank you so very, very much Judy Chu for hosting this important event.

You know, as one of the most senior Members of the California delegation, I feel a strong responsibility to provide leadership on this issue. I want you to know, as the Chair of the Financial Services Committee, I’ve created a Subcommittee on Diversity and Inclusion in order to deal with racism and discrimination. I want you to know that I do not tolerate racism and discrimination in any shape or form. I have been a victim of racism and discrimination all my life and so, I’m with you today because I stand tall against this racism that is being activated and is placed against all of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. I want you to know that when I joined the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, that I

joined it because I knew that we need to stand together on all of these issues of racism and discrimination. And so, it is not just now that I’m getting started with this issue. You know, I represent a community of cities. My city of Gardena is twenty five percent AAPI, my city of Torrance is thirty six percent AAPI, and I deal with the issues of concern to all of my communities all the time. And so, this past weekend, in one of my cities of Westchester, we took to the street and we organized a protest where we stood for hours protesting the racism and discrimination against members of the AAPI community.

“So, I am so pleased about your leadership, Judy, and I am also pleased that my colleagues have joined with you today and have expressed their outrage at the racism and discrimination that’s being placed against the AAPI community.

“And so, not only do I stand up in support of and in solidarity with our AAPI community. Over the past year we have all witnessed the horrific rise in anti-Asian sentiment and violence, and we’re here today to say in no uncertain terms: enough is enough! Just this week, when I mentioned to you, that I joined with grassroots leaders of all ages and backgrounds for a protest in my district, I want you to know that we’re going to continue. We’re going to do this as often as we can, and we’re going to move around the district in doing it.

API Lays Out Initiatives, Including Partnerships with Communities of Color

The American Petroleum Institute (API) said it would support carbon pricing to help lower the country’s emissions and slow global warming.

“What we’re advocating here is a market-based approach, and that could encompass many different ways to do this,” API President and CEO Mike Sommers said during a news conference on Thursday, March 25.

Sommers stopped well short of endorsing President Joe Biden’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions within 30 years.

“There’s no way it is feasible without technologies that aren’t currently in the marketplace today,” Sommers offered.

“We think that the best way to do that is through a market-based carbon-pricing mechanism that isn’t picking winners and losers.”

Sommers noted that API supports the direct regulation of methane for new and existing sources.

“We want to work with the Biden administration as they develop those new regulations,” he remarked.

When asked what API is doing to involve minorities, Sommers noted that the 600-member organization has many partnerships in minority communities.

“We’ve worked with them

over many, many years, and those partnerships are strong and growing larger,” Sommers noted. The National Newspaper Publishers Association, the trade organization representing the 230-plus African American-owned newspapers and media companies in the United States, counts among those API partners.

“In fact, API has had a program for over a decade, which brings a minority and underrepresented communities together to talk about, jobs and initiatives within the oil and gas sector,” Sommers responded.

“It’s an important priority of both the API board of directors and the API team in Washington. We’ll continue to grow those alliances over time because we know, based on the studies that we

have done in this space, we expect that 50 percent of the jobs in oil and gas in the next 20 years are going to be filled by women and minorities.”

Sommers added that those are “good paying jobs.”

“Jobs that led a pathway to the middle class. And, we want to make sure that minorities and underrepresented populations are well-represented within our sector.”

During the news conference, API released its policy framework of industry and government actions to address climate change risks.

At the same time, they aim to meet long-term energy needs globally.

“Confronting the challenge of climate change and building a lower-carbon future will require a combination

of government policies, industry initiatives, and continuous innovation,” Sommers stated.

“America has made significant progress in reducing emissions to generational lows, but there’s more work to do, and there’s nobody better equipped to drive further progress than the people who solve some of the world’s toughest energy problems every day.

“As our industry accelerates efforts to advance groundbreaking technologies, reduce emissions and drive transparent and consistent climate reporting, we urge lawmakers to support marketbased policies that foster innovation, including carbon pricing.”

Sommers noted five areas in which API and its members support climate actions, including accelerating technology and innovation to reduce emissions while meeting growing energy needs and the further mitigation of emissions from operations to accelerate environmental progress.

He said API also endorses a carbon price policy to drive economy-wide, market-based solutions.

The organization also seeks to “advance cleaner fuels to provide lower-carbon choices for consumers and drive climate reporting to furnish consistency and transparency.”

The book takes us on a stirring whirlwind tour of historical racial injustices, revealing a startling repetitive pattern that contextualises George Floyd’s death, reminding us that change inevitably begins with us.

As the trial of police officer Derek Chauvin is about to begin, the timely reflection it provokes attests that I CAN’T BREATHE is more than a mere book. For new Rams wide receiver DeSean Jackson, his Los Angeles homecoming is bigger than football.

Yes, he gets a chance to potentially close out his career winning a Super Bowl in the Rams’ home stadium, in his hometown. But he is also afforded an opportunity to be closer to the community he was raised in, and by extension more hands-on as he continues to give back to it.

“For me, Los Angeles, California – being born and raised here in L.A., man, this is very personal for me,” Jackson said during his introductory video conference last Friday. “I felt like being able to have that upbringing and background from me being able to be raised here when I go all across the world, it’s like a demeanor you carry yourself with, it’s a swag you have. So, for me to be back here in L.A., man, I know the inner city very well. I come from that, and I just want to reach back and help pull people out.”

DeSean Jackson on signing with the Rams, relationship with Sean McVay, playing with Matthew Stafford Jackson has long maintained a connection to his West Coast roots even as the first 13 years of his professional professional football career kept him on the opposite side of the country.

He grew up in the Crenshaw neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles before attending Long Beach Polytechnic High School, but still gives

back to both communities.

Last December, he teamed up with Packers tight end Marcedes Lewis, Titans linebacker Jayon Brown and former Patriots and Browns linebacker Willie McGinest – all of whom are also Long Beach Poly alumni – to donate $50,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach. When the Cali Bears Youth Football Team – founded in 2018 and serving disadvantaged, inner-city youth in South Central Los Angeles – needed funding to save their 2019 season, Jackson stepped up with a $30,000 donation to cover uniforms, equipment, referees and venue fees to make it possible.

Jackson also hosted a youth football camp in Los Angeles in 2014 with the Crenshaw Colts, a local youth Pop

Warner football league.

“The poverty, the slums, where we’re stuck at, we don’t really have the opportunity to get out of there and go see things different,” Jackson said. “So for me, I’m continuously in those areas to just help kind of change the mentality, from how we were raised and what we grew up doing, just to really be on some positivity going out and helping kids stay in school, stay off the streets, stay away from drugs and just really create platforms and opportunities for these young kids that have somebody to kind of lean on when they feel like they’re down and out and they don’t have no one to listen to or to get answers from. That’s kind of what I see myself bringing here to the city, is something I’ve already really been doing.”

Regardless of what those initiatives look like, Jackson ultimately wants to set an example for Los Angeles youth that their hard work can be rewarded, knowing how much of an impression it made on him at a young age through his older brother.

“Just to be able to have them know I’m here, to really give these kids the opportunity to come to training camp, to come watch us play and really see how it’s done,” Jackson said. “Because at a young age, my older brother, Byron (Jackson) played for the Kansas City Chiefs and he actually had a great relationship with (former head coach) Dick Vermeil. I can remember I was like nine years old, he took me to a training camp in Wisconsin and as a young kid to be able to see what it takes, how hard they work from really being in training camp in dorm rooms to waking up early in the morning, to having a full day where it’s nothing else but waking up in the morning, to eating breakfast, to going to meetings, to practice, to taking a lunch break, then going back to meetings, going back to practice, just being able to see that as a young kid speaks volumes. Draper, an award-winning documentarian who is also a member of the sorority, takes pleasure in being able to tell this universal story about the women who founded an organization that is still making change today.

“The reach of Alpha Kappa Alpha into American society is at every level,” says the NAACP Image Award nominee. “When you get a mammogram, get a scholarship to further your Xfinity, becoming the first original film for the media company’s Black content education, attend an HBCU among many

Draper considers it a privilege to make this documentary. “It’s an honor to elevate the stories of Black women who have influenced American society using the tools I know and love.”

While Twenty Pearls is clearly a passion project for Riley, it is also in line with the type of historical work the storyteller creates as a celebrated documentarian. In 2016, Variety Magazine named Draper to its “2016 Top 10 Documakers to Watch“ list.

Draper’s 2016 documentary, Olympic Pride, American Prejudice, which tells the untold story of 18 African Americans who defied Hitler and Jim Crow in 1936, was a 2017 nominee for the NAACP Image Awards Outstanding Documentary Film and qualified for the 2017 Academy Awards.

4 Ways Continued Remote Work Could Torpedo Business and Career Success

The rise of remote work has changed the face of business, and in some cases brightened the outlook for employees weary of battling traffic during morning and late-afternoon commutes.

Many of those employees hope their companies will stick with this new work-from-home reality even after the pandemic is nothing more than an unhappy memory.

But despite the benefits, continuing remote work beyond what is necessary could result in serious consequences, says Clint Padgett (www. clintonmpadgett.com), president and CEO of Project Success Inc. and the ForbesBooks author of How Teams Triumph: Managing By Commitment.

“Working from home limits the interaction between employees and their managers and co-workers,” Padgett says. “That might be fine for a short time, but over the long haul it means you aren’t developing relationships or communicating in ways necessary to create a cohesive team.”

So far, most people choose to focus on the upsides. More than half – 54 percent – of remote workers say that if given a choice they would want to keep working from home even after the pandemic, according to the Pew Research Center.

Padgett says employees and their employers may both come to regret that view. He says potential downsides of permanent work from home could include: Employee burnout. When someone leaves an office at the end of the day, they put both actual distance and emotional distance between themselves and work. With remote work, Padgett says, that barrier between home and work is removed, which could lead to greater instances of burnout. As a result, people are more likely to produce poor quality work or leave their current jobs in search of something they hope will be better, he says.

People see each other in hallways or the breakroom and start to chat.

“Those organic conversations often result in creative thinking and problem solving,” Padgett says. “That’s a missing ingredient in the creative process with remote work.”

An increase of “silo-itis.” Even in an office, human nature leads people to seek out like-minded individuals, which means people within departments often stick together unless steps are taken to make sure they interact with others. “With the lack of physical interaction that remote work gives us, we will be even more isolated, working only within the team structure,” Padgett says. “That’s problematic because you get better results when people come out of their silos.”

The potential for lower pay. One of the perks of remote work is that people can live where they please and no longer need to be in the same general area as company headquarters. That

means they can abandon high-cost areas in favor of communities where housing is cheaper. But Padgett points out that there are already news reports that some employers are considering paying people less as a result.

Right now remote work is the reality for many people, so to get the most out of it, managers should be proactive about making sure remote workers are actively included in Zoom meetings, Padgett says.

“And while I know nobody wants more Zoom meetings,” he says, “people may need to schedule one-onone time with coworkers or to gather virtually in small groups just to chat and discuss non-work-related topics.

“That can help restore some of those serendipitous moments and reduce the problems associated with a return to silos.”
