For the past two decades Bourbon Street Fish & Grill has been a mainstay on Prairie Ave. across the street from newly built SoFi Stadium.

With a vast variety of fish Po-Boy sandwiches on its menu it brought the delicious flavor of New Orleans seafood to the community of Inglewood.

Bourbon Street Fish had also become the hub for local community newspapers as a distribution site, but as Inglewood continues to evolve amid its ongoing renovation and development, the eatery is among the latest small business casualties.

Derrick Anthony Brown, owner of Bourbon Street Fish, confirmed to

Inglewood Today this week that his restaurant was not allowed to renew its 20-year lease with owners at the 601 S Prairie Ave. location thus forcing its closure and clouding its future in Inglewood.

Brown, who once served as president of the Inglewood-based non-profit Sportsman Little League, stated that he has attempted to find other locations in Inglewood, but has not been successful.

He also accused Inglewood property owners of favoring more lucrative corporate business.

Rumors have been widely circulated about Bourbon Street Fish becoming another small business victim of corporate development that has

transformed the city into the sports and entertainment capital of the world.

Chief among the rumors was LeBron James and his business partners purchasing the land that once occupied Bourbon Street Fish, the apartment complex next door and the Lighthouse Memorials & Receptions, McCormick Center funeral home to make room for a new development project.

However, when reached by Inglewood Today, a person at McCormick said they knew nothing of the business being sold and doubted that would be the case for the 40 year family named funeral home.

Neighbors of Bourbon Street Fish told the newspaper they heard that Brown

had received $2 million, but that appears to be highly unlikely since Brown did not own the property or have a signed lease agreement.

Sources say that throughout the two decades that Brown and his family had conducted business at the location they did not attempt to purchase the land which is now in a family trust of the current owners.

Brown was delinquent in keeping a scheduled a meeting with Inglewood Today on Aug. 17, and also failed to return phone calls.

New Census Data Shows Changing Complexion of California; Political Power Shifts

Last week, the U.S. Census Bureau held a press conference to announce its first local level findings from the 2020 data collection cycle.

The new numbers -- which drill down to provide demographic information at the county, city and block levels -- reveal that California is more multiracial, more urban and facing population shifts that will likely lead to redrawing the boundaries of the state’s congressional and legislative districts.

Based on estimates the Census Bureau released in April, California is already losing a seat in the United States House of Representatives for the first time in the state’s 171-year history, bringing the state’s congressional delegation down to 52 members. That loss of one seat will also equate to a decline in the amount of federal funding California receives every year.

Since August of 2020, the 14 members of the California Citizens Redistricting Commission have been working on the once-in-a-decade project of redrawing the lines of the congressional, state Senate and Assembly and State Board of Equalization districts. There are five Democrats, five Republicans and four people who are not members of either party serving on the commission.

Bureau. “While the primary purpose of these data is for states to redraw their districts, these statistics will also tell us how many people live in each city, each county and each block.”

Those numbers also determine how – and how much -- state and federal funding will be allocated to counties and cities in the state.

Based on the numbers, most of the changes coming to the state’s legislative districts are expected to happen where there has been population increases, slow growth or a loss of residents – areas in the rural northernmost regions of the state and in Southern California counties around or below Los Angeles.

Growth across the Los Angeles area, for example, over the last 10 year has been slow, but some cities like Irvine in Orange County are now among the fastest-growing in the country.

Over the last 10 years, the complexion of California has changed significantly.

Driven mostly by population growth among Hispanics, the state joined Hawaii, the District of Columbia and New Mexico as places in the United States where Whites are no longer the majority. The state’s Hispanic population grew from 37.6% in 2010 to 39.4 % in 2020 while the White population dropped from 40.1% to 34.7%.

The state’s Black population has also seen a decrease of 2.7% from a little over 6 % to 5.7%. The current total Black population is now 2,237,044.

California is also the second most diverse state after Hawaii, according to the Census Bureau.

“As the country has grown, we have continued to evolve in how we measure the race and ethnicity of the people who live here,” said Nicholas Jones, director and senior advisor of Race and Ethnic Research and Outreach, Population Division, U.S. Census Bureau.

The Census Bureau implemented a significant change to the 2020 census data collection. It used two separate questions to gather an additional layer of ethnic information besides the usual inquiries on race and Hispanic origin.

For example, if a participant identified as Black or African American, there was also an option to specify nationalities like Jamaican, Haitian, Nigerian, Ethiopian Somali, etc.

“The improvements we made to

the 2020 census yield a more accurate portrait of how people self-identify in response to two separate questions on Hispanic origin and race. Our analysis of the 2020 census results show that the US population is much more multiracial and more racially and ethnically diverse than what we measured in the past.”

Across the United States, the results showed that the White population remained the largest in the country at 204.3 million with an additional 31.1 million identifying as mixed in combination with White. The multiracial population comprised the second highest population for the first time at 49.9 million alone or combined,

surpassing the Black or African American population at 46.9 million.

The U.S. population is now 57.8% White, 18.7% Hispanic, 12.4% Black and 6% Asian.

There were several other notable findings shared by the bureau during the presentation. The US Population is currently 331.4 million people, an increase of 22.7 million over the past 10 years. The 7.4% increase is the second lowest growth rate in history.

Overall, national population growth was centered around urban areas over the last 10 years. California is home to 3 of the top 10 largest cities in the country. San Jose stands at number 10 with a population of 1.01 million (a 7.1% increase), San Diego is at number 8 with 1.4 million people (a 6.1 % increase), and number 2 on the list is Los Angeles with 3.8 million residents (a 2.8 % increase).

For the first time ever, all cities in the top 10 (with the highest populations) have over 1 million people.

According to the Census Bureau this first release of local redistricting data is in a legacy format that will be easier for experience data analysts to navigate.

In September, we will release the exact same data in a far more user-friendly format that people are familiar with and will allow for easier searching,” said Jones.

County Can Count On On August 11, 2021, La Tijera TK-8 hosted a press event for the Los Angeles County Office of Education safety and wellbeing campaign, “All In: Schools L.A. County Can Count On”. We were honored to host the Public Health Director, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Mental Health, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, Dr. Jonathan Sherin and Los Angeles

Distribution We are proud to share that our District distributed over 150,000 meals in the 2020-2021 school year.

The grocery kit distribution program ended on August 12, 2021 and effective August 23, 2021, we will resume meal distribution for our IUSD students. We are thrilled to announce that we have added supper to our meal program, so we will now be serving breakfast, lunch and supper! For those students in the After School Education and Safety Program (ASES), supper will be served on campus; for those not in ASES, students will be able to take the supper home as a grab and go meal.

For students who are participating in the Independent Study Program, meals will be provided on a weekly basis similar to our “Grocery Kits” option. IUSD Construction Facilities Updates We are excited to share updates on the construction projects at various IUSD school sites. Construction will continue at identified school sites throughout the year.

The food services kiosk is being installed on the newly placed concrete pad. This will be the new serving area for the new TK-5 Campus of Woodworth-Monroe. New window

blinds were installed inside all the TK-5 Classrooms and work rooms of each building. A new fence line is being installed at the field to establish the surplus property line that is planning to be leased for future development

The staff lounge was recently renovated into a wellness/ lounge center for staff. The sandblasting process which removes all old paint from the buildings has started as part of the exterior painting project. Once the sandblasting process is completed, patching of walls and new painting will begin around the exterior of the buildings.

Alternate Income Form IUSD is participating in the Seamless Summer Meal Option during the 20212022 school year and this program provides students with breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks at no additional cost to families. In order to continue receiving additional District funding for this special program, families are required to complete the “Alternate Income Form”. The income form will not only provide free meals, it may also assist with after school academic and enrichment programs, state and federal funding for school budgets, resources for classrooms and much more! In addition, our district is having a competition between elementary and secondary schools where the two winning schools will have the In-N-Out truck for lunch.

Inglewood’s latest dining hotspot: ‘Martin’s Cocina + Cantina’

A new dining option has arrived in the downtown Inglewood area, and it’s set to be a local hotspot. ‘Martin’s Cocina + Cantina’ has officially opened its doors at the corner of La Brea Avenue and Regent Street.

The highly-anticipated, familyowned Mexican restaurant has been turning the heads of passers in the community for many months, as it’s nearly impossible to miss the trendy, animated sign beaming onto La Brea Avenue.

It’s safe to assume that Martin’s generous square footage and chic interior design will bring in many events and social gatherings. The spacious, modern bar area and the multiple photo ops – one at the front of house, and one near the back– sets the tone for fun times. Live entertainment such as mariachi bands and DJs are to be expected on some of the busier

nights.

As of now, Martin’s is amid their soft opening phase, with the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for September 16. Christian Martin, Restaurant Operator, encourages the whole town to show up for the celebration.

“My family, we’ve been here for years, so we want to stay in Inglewood and we do our best to make relationships with folks in our own community,” says Christian Martin.

Sports & Entertainment History made as fans see football at SoFi for first time

NFL football is officially underway, and for impassioned Chargers and Rams fans the preseason debut on Aug. 14 at SoFi Stadium was been a long time coming.

The monumental evening marked the first time that football fans were able to bask in the luxury of the brandnew, 70 thousand-seat, state-of-the-art stadium which is home to Rams and Chargers.

Excitement filled the air for those who were in attendance for the matchup. The highly-anticipated SoFi

Stadium has been in operation since September of 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic prevented the opening of its doors to the public during the 2020 NFL season. For nearly a year, many Inglewood residents have been counting down the days until they can finally reap the benefits of the multibillion-dollar, revolutionary stadium residing in their own backyard.

Eager spectators filed onto Hollywood Park ground, many who seized the opportunity for a tailgate party with loved ones as part of the pre-game festivities. Some dressed

head-to-toe in Rams gear, some in Chargers gear, and some were divided households of half-and-half.

“I’m super excited to see the finished product and what all it offers, not only the beauty of the aesthetic, the water and everything, but I want to see the shops, the restaurants, and everything else. I’m excited. I see the NFL Network building next to it. So, I can’t wait. And actually, to be honest with you, I’m more excited about just being inside of this great, almost sixbillion-dollar monument of a stadium than I am about the actual game,” says

Other pre-game festivities included the entertainment stage that sits in the middle of American Airlines Plaza, the open-air space just steps outside of the stadium entrance. An hour before kickoff, the stage featured a performance from Rams cheerleaders, along with a DJ and other interviews.

Attendees danced, ate, drank, and took photos with Rampage– the official Rams mascot.

As for the game itself, the Chargers got the win. And as many of both team’s starters remained sidelined, it was an opportunity for certain rookies and less-established players to make a statement and solidify roster spots for the season.

Regardless of many predictedstarters not being on the field, the crowd remained electrified all throughout the night. Every catch seemed to earn a roaring applause, as if it was simply a relief to have something to cheer about after nearly two years¬– and counting¬– of pandemic anguish and uncertainty.

This weekend both the Rams and Chargers will play at home, with the Rams playing on Aug. 21st against the Raiders and the Bolts hosting the 49ers on Aug 22nd, respectively.

Inglewood native Jamal Hill is set to represent Team USA Swimming at the upcoming Tokyo Paralympics. This will be the first Paralympic journey for the 26-year-old. In 2019, the Hiram College graduate won second place in the 100-meter freestyle at the Indianapolis World Para Swimming World Series.

Prior to that, in 2018 at the

Paralympics Swimming Para National Championships, Hill took home first place in the 100-meter freestyle and the 50-meter freestyle, along with second place in the 100-meter backstroke.

The upcoming Paralympic Games, which have been delayed due to the pandemic, will take place beginning August 25, 2021, but will be officially referred to as the ‘2020 Tokyo Paralympics’, due to the fact that the

occasion was originally scheduled for the year of 2020.

NBCUniversal will broadcast 1,200 hours of Paralympic programming of the Tokyo Games, including more than 200 hours of TV coverage among NBC, NBCSN, and the Olympic Channel, along with over 1,000 hours of live streaming across 19 sports on NBC’s digital platforms.

The Chargers signed outside linebacker Davin Bellamy. The team also released quarterback KJ Costello and tight end Matt Seybert, bringing the roster to 85 players.

Bellamy entered the NFL in 2018 as an undrafted free agent with Houston.

He has spent time with the Texans, Bengals, Titans and 49ers over the last three seasons. Before coming into the NFL, Bellamy spent four years at Georgia. He played in 48 games for the Bulldogs, totaling 118 tackles and 13 sacks while forcing four fumbles.

Bellamy will wear No. 56 for the Chargers.

The Drew League Still in Fun Biz

Founder Dino Smiley reunites community through hoops

It’s a steamy summer afternoon in Bellflower, the St. John Bosco parking is filled to capacity and fans of the iconic Drew League are coming and going amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

After a year pause due to the pandemic The Drew League is back in business and fulfilling its prophecy of reuniting basketball players, family and friends that span generations.

On this particular day it is as if the league never stopped producing without excuses as its moniker implies, although 2020 became yet another COVID-19 casualty, a mere hiccup on its glorified history of revealing stars, stalwarts and foundational pieces to a league that has become as much of a tradition in the Southern California as low riders and hip hop.

The frequent voice of affable George Preciado echoes throughout the gymnasium at Bosco piercing the roars of the crowd after a posterizing dunk, but the man responsible for it all Dino Smiley is too busy to see or notice.

Smiley has committed his life and for the most part his family of son Desmond, daughter Chaniel, who serves as commissioner of league, wife Stephanie and brother Butch to The Drew League, and since 1971 Smiley has seen more than his share those electrifying moments.

This year has been particularly more rejoiceful than others because for a while it was not a sure bet to happen due to the looming and stagnant coronavirus which has altered life as we’ve all become accustomed to.

“Just seeing people reunite has been the most important,” Smiley explained to Inglewood Today. “People always come back to hang out and see old

friends and of course hoop. Players are happy to get back on the court and compete at the highest level, so it has been fun.”

From a fans perspective there is no telling what you might

experience at The Drew, it’s like a box of Cracker Jacks you never know what you are going to get inside.

Whether it’s the gray bearded long time coach Wally Moore who lays claim to three Drew crowns, famous Ball Brothers, NBA standout Montrezl Harrell, former Compton and USC now NBA standout DeMar DeRozan, the comeback NBA kid Isiah Thomas or Dodgers star outfielder Mookie Betts just stopping by.

In years gone by there was the late Kobe Bryant taking court, James Harden, rapper The Game and The King, LeBron James has made cameo appearances at The Drew.

There is never a dull moment at The Drew no matter where its being played, but the first and only hosting

With all that has happened and the tremendous growth The Drew has made throughout the years, it has not outgrown its core purpose of generating entertainment while making the participants accessible to the fans who support them.

Before the Nike sponsorship that came along to provide the fancy uniforms, studs like Casper Ware was a mere high jumping, hot shooting star from Fremont High, Baron Davis was a prodigy and the players paid the referee fees out of their own pockets.

Back then the championship award was anything Smiley could afford, such as when the title team received miniature black and white televisions.

Today, The Drew League symbol is emblazoned on Nike dry fits T-shirts, sweat shirts, caps and yes face masks and even has its own signature Nike kicks. Sales from the merch benefits The Drew Foundation which offers scholarships to kids in underserved communities.

Davis was among the headliners at the inaugural Drew All Star game at Southwest College this summer that also featured former Laker Metta World Peace. It marked the first time the NBA Players Association sanctioned a pro-am event.

Casper, since retired as a player, coaches his son Casper Jr. on the long standing Cheaters squad that will be an 8th seed when the playoffs tip on August 19th.

The Cititeam Blazers (62) is among the top seeds, having won the Tamar Hamilton Division, named for Smiley’s late sister who died in 2020.

All In (6-2), coached by the boastful and colorful Moore is the other top seed led by Stephaun Branch and Wally’s son Marquis Moore. Then there is the last team to win it all, the Most Hated Players led by former NBA journeyman Nick Young.

This year another team will crowned at The Drew, but the true winners countless be the spectators who don’t want the fun to end and can’t wait for it to start again.

It is quite rare when two members of the House of Representatives are joined for a public event, but to have The Speaker of the House and the top Democrat representative together was beyond exceptional.

That was the case recently on Aug. 12 when Speaker Nancy Pelosi joined Congresswoman Maxine Waters in South Central Los Angeles to explain the significance of the Child Tax Credit at the Maxine Waters Employment Preparation Center.

Waters, who serves at the top as powerful House Committee on Financial Services is responsible for bring The Speaker, the first woman to hold such prestigious post to the region.

Flanked by two families, one Hispanic and one Black, Waters told massive media gathering at the Ethel Bradley Early Education center on the campus of the impact of the legislation.

“There is no doubt that the expanded Child Tax Credit will impact our communities and help put an end to child poverty in this country,” said Congresswoman Maxine Waters. “I’m delighted that Speaker Pelosi has joined to help spread the word about what I believe to be one of the most significant public policies for children and families in the history of our country.”

She stated that “These two centers play a critical role in fostering the growth and development of our community here in South Los Angeles from adolescence to adulthood through a strong commitment to the educational advancement and workforce development of our learners.

I am thankful to the Speaker for her leadership on behalf of our children and I’m thrilled to demonstrate to her the

amazing work being done here in CA43 to ensure our children and families are supported.”

It did not take long for families to redeem the benefits of the credit.

“Nearly one month ago, families began receiving their checks from the Biden Child Tax Credit that Democrats secured in the Rescue Plan, benefitting more than 90 percent of California children and cutting child poverty in half,” said Speaker Nancy Pelosi. “As we advance our Build Back Better Agenda, Democrats will continue to fight to extend these tax cuts, as well as secure more vital benefits for working families, so that we get parents earning and children learning. In this fight for our families and our children, we are grateful to have the leadership of Chairwoman Maxine Waters, a force of nature who has made a difference for millions in Los Angeles and America.”

The Child Tax Credit provides children and their families with additional payments throughout the year that helps them with the costs of food, childcare, diapers, healthcare, clothing, and taxes. Low-income, working, and middle-class families are receiving the same monthly payments: $250 per month per child between the ages of 6 and 17, and $300 per month for every young child under the age of 6. Monthly payments began on July 15, 2021 and will continue through the end of the year.

Impact of the Child Tax Credit in California’s 43rd Congressional District: Eighty-six point six percent of children in Waters district will gain from expanded and improved Child Tax Credit, this amount to approximately 162,000 children.

The average benefit for 47,600

households is $3,100.

The expanded and improved Child Tax Credit lifts 18,300 children in CA43 out of poverty.

Because of the larger benefit for the youngest, 6,700 kids under the age of six are raised out of poverty. Families with children in poverty will receive $4,300 on average.

Eligibility Information: Single filers making below $75,000, head of household filers making below $112,500, and married joint filers making below $150,000 are eligible for the full amount.

If a couple makes under $24,800, a head of household makes under $18,650, or a single filer makes under $12,400, and they have not filed their taxes, there is a simple, easy tool to sign up for the Child Tax Credit at ChildTaxCredit.gov and click on the sign-up link. All you’ll need to apply are a reliable mailing address, an e-mail address, Social Security numbers for your children, and Social Security Numbers (or ITIN) for you and your spouse. If you provide bank account information, you can receive your payment safely and securely by direct deposit.
