Inglewood Hub: New UPS Store By Charles Jackson
Over the past three years, the city of Inglewood has virtually become a tale of two cities. In part of the city we have put in place an entirely new infrastructure surrounding The Forum, Hollywood Park Casino, SoFi Stadium and the promise of the Intuit Dome. At the same time, just minutes away from this ideal situation some residents are grieving over the loss of the once vibrant retail district along Market Street, and the rapid dispatch of some businesses that found the balance between rent and receipts to no longer be palatable. As of late, the only thing new about Market Street has been the addition of card reading parking meters, overlooking vacant parking spaces. But the other day I needed to return a few office products to an on-line vendor. On my way to the prescribed drop off location, situated on the other side of “the infrastructure,” I noticed a sudden bright spot right in the middle of Market Street, and it was just what I needed. Apparently, about a year ago a young woman by the name Giavonna Grimes had a vision. She was a recent graduate of Purdue with a dream to buy into a local business. After some measure of research she focused her attention on a sandwich shop, but while another eatery would be welcomed, it would not be a unique addition to the tapestry of relevant demands for this place and time. With the anticipated growth trajectory of this part of town, and expected to be supporting a growing residential housing, retail and entertainment area, what was needed in Inglewood was a business hub. Ms. Grimes reconsidered and wisely sought to become a sole proprietor of a UPS franchise. Now, starting her second year in business She now has 1600 square feet of space in her Market Street location, between Manchester and Queen. She has plans to expand the business to offer large format poster printing services, in addition to the present list of services that she provides to this burgeoning, progressive community. Today the store offers a list of well received convenient services. Beyond the expected packing, shipping and
printing, services there are 500 post boxes on site for customers that require 24 hour access to basic USPS mail pickup. The store can also make arrangements for customers that need to pick up oversize packages after
hours. There are faxing services of course along with notary and PC services. You can also drop off a full range of regular post office mailings, well after the local post offices close. Best of all, thanks to Ms. Grimes’ vision and desire to serve, we no longer have to drive out to Los Angeles or
Hawthorne for these services. Located just a city block away from city hall, we now have a convenient and local partner that allows us to regenerate our revenue back into our city, and handle our business, with a group of informative men and women available to assist us navigate the demands of our quick paced society. Advocates Want More Black Californians Involved in State’s Transition to EVs Maxim Elramsisy | California Black Media
When Los Angeles hosted its annual car show a little over a month ago at the LA Convention Center, it not only showcased the latest in automotive technology, but the event also transformed into a policy forum on clean energy, previewing what lies ahead for California’s electric vehicle (EV) future. Battery-powered cars took center stage. They accounted for the majority of the over 1000 vehicles on display, ranging from cars and trucks to motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and semi-trucks. For Black and other minority advocates in attendance, several concerns emerged. Among them were the impact of the transition to zero emissions vehicles (ZEVs) on Black Californians and how the state will equip low-income neighborhoods with the infrastructure needed when
California bans the sale of all gaspowered vehicles in 2035. “It’s not enough to build the infrastructure in low-income neighborhoods, the people in those neighborhoods need to have access to the jobs installing and maintaining that infrastructure,” said Charles Dorsey of The Dorsey Group, a Black-ownedand-operated Long Beach-based consulting firm. Speaking on the sidelines of the car show in a meeting room tucked away from showgoers, Dorsey engaged in a lively policy discussion about California’s clean energy future. “My hope is that this is also an opportunity for us to make a decision to do business with small businesses did we rock with small and growing businesses, until they became medium businesses understanding that you’re going to metric for [success],” Dorsey said. have to work with them, so they can Continued on page 7 get to the same place; and that can be a “How many
