Has Taylor Swift Created a Wave of New Voters?

Last week mega pop star Taylor Swift endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris on Instagram after watching the Trump-Harris debate.

“She fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” Swift wrote. “I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”

The endorsement came after Trump shared a fake image of Swift endorsing him in an AI-generated post last month. Trump wrote “I accept.” Swift’s real endorsement set the record straight and made it clear to her 283 million followers where her heart really was. This is not the first time the singer has made a public endorsement. In 2018, she threw her support behind two Tennessee congressional candidates whose views on LGBTQIA rights and gender equality line up with hers.

Trump’s pretentious fondness for Swift ended abruptly, with an

emotionally charged post on Truth Social, saying in all caps, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT.”

When asked what he thought about Swift’s comment, Trump’s vice-

presidential running mate JD Vance said: “We admire Taylor Swift’s music, but I don’t think most Americans, whether they like her music, are fans of hers or not, are going to be influenced

Remembering Tito Jackson

Tito Jackson, one of the founding members of the beloved Jackson 5, died on Sunday at 70.

A family told the New York Times that the singer died of a heart attack while driving from New Mexico to Oklahoma. According to the Daily Mail, a passerby spotted Jackson and saw that he needed medical attention. The driver flagged down police near the American Heritage Plaza shopping center in New Mexico, where he had apparently pulled over after experiencing some discomfort. He was transported to the hospital, but pronounced dead

hours later.

Sons of the singer and musician confirmed the news Sunday evening on Instagram, writing, “It’s with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved father, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson is no longer with us. We are shocked, saddened and heartbroken.”

They described their dad as “an incredible man who cared about everyone and their well-being.”

Tito Jackson was the third of nine children, and part of a musical family dynasty which included brothers, Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon and breakout

Lies and More Lies: Cleaning up Trump’s Mess

“If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that’s what I’m going to do.”

These are the actual words spewed out of the mouth of a man hoping to become Vice President of the United States! Can you believe it? Yes, JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, actually admitted to the world on Monday that he lied about Haitian migrants stealing and eating people’s pets in Springfield, Ohio to draw attention to immigration problems.

He said this with a straight face, and not an ounce of remorse, regret or embarrassment.

Trump told the same lie in a televised debate last week, and even doubled down after moderator David Muir

called him out on the nonsense. It may be a ploy by Trump and Vance to make political rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, look weak on immigration, but to Springfield residents, it’s a nightmare.

It was the week from hell for officials forced to clean up Trump’s mess. Since the pet hoax began, the city has experienced at least 33 bomb threats against Haitians, which has led to school evacuations. Widespread fear and hate has gripped the city.

Despite Springfield police and city manager debunking the lie that Haitian migrants are harming people’s pets, the lie continues to spread like wildfire. The quality of life has plummeted. The annual CultureFest celebration has been cancelled. Parents are afraid to send their children to school. The city’s resources, which were already tight due to the influx of 15,000 migrants, are now stretched to the limit in the predominately white, blue-collar city of about 60,000.

Springfield Mayor Rob Rue said seven days ago (before the debate), his city didn’t have concerns about bomb threats. Now Springfield is spending “hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars” to keep residents safe and violence at bay. The Proud Boys, a White Supremacist group is patrolling the streets interrogating the Haitian community, spreading

hatred and racism.

While the chaos continues in Springfield, Trump has managed to escape without consequences. This is his tactic. Tell a big lie, start a fire, fan the flame. Then, move on and start another fire somewhere else. Last week he peddled the lie about Haitians eating people’s pets. This week, the lie is that President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris are responsible for the recent assassination attempt on his life by a shooter who tried to take him out at his golf course in Florida. He blames it on their “rhetoric.”

Never mind that Trump has been repeatedly warned by Secret Service not to have events in open outdoor spaces because it makes it harder for them to protect him. So now, he has

put a target on the backs of Biden and Harris, as well as Haitians.

Once again, victims are left to refute his false claims and clean up his mess. Trump has a lie for every news cycle. It doesn’t matter what he says or how many people he hurts as long as the attention stays on him.

Here we have a 78 year-old toddler, sticking his proverbial finger in every pie, turning everything upside down, creating messes everywhere he goes, leaving adults to clean up after him. As much as I love the enthusiasm and positive energy surrounding Vice President Harris’ campaign, I’m weary of this election season.

November 5th can’t come soon enough for me. Enough is enough!

Black Caucus Members Weigh Next Steps for Reparations in California

For more than two weeks now, members of the California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) have been facing sharp criticisms from frustrated advocates and other Black Californians after the State Assembly failed to bring up two reparations bills for a floor vote on Aug. 31.

On Sept. 14, Assemblymembers Mia Bonta (D-Alameda), Corey Jackson (D-Moreno Valley), and Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento) participated in the “State of Black California 2024: Listening Session Tour” in Sacramento. During the session they heard from people who said they felt let down that the bills did not pass the Legislature and advance to Newsom’s desk for his consideration.

The three-hour event was held at the Secretary of State’s office building, one block south of the State Capitol. Amid interruptions and disruptions from the attendees during the event, Bonta said she appreciated the feedback.

“I got out of it what I expected. We have a lot of diverse thoughts and opinions about how to proceed,” Bonta told California Black Media (CBM). “It was helpful to hear directly from people without the constraints of hearing rooms and formalities. I heard a lot of frustration and concerns. I

also got out of it a call to action, as we shared, to do better and I am certainly committed to doing that.”

On Sept. 12, CBLC member Sen. Lola Smallwood-Cuevas (D-Los Angeles) called-in to Dominique di Prima’s radio show on KBLA 1580 AM in Los Angeles to share her perspective on reasons the CLBC did not to bring the bills to the Assembly floor. She also shared that going forward there needs to be better communications with the community to ensure passage of bills in the future.

“I want to say that the CLBC has laid a strong foundation to build upon. I think what this experience, this dialogue we are in with our

community has shown us is that we need to address our communication channels,” Smallwood-Cuevas said. “I think we attempted to do that by having the State of (Black) California convening across California.”

The State of Black California Listening Session tour is a community conversation on reparations and the state of the Black community. The tour is an opportunity for the public to learn more about the 2024 legislative report that is an initiative of the University of California, Los Angeles’s Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, and the reparations package.

Nick Cannon will serve as the celebrity host.

HBOB fans have made their voices heard, casting votes online to select the final two bands to perform at the live event: Hampton University and University of Arkansas Pine Bluff. The full HBOB 2025 lineup includes:

• Alabama A&M University

– Marching Maroon and White Band

• Alabama State University –Mighty Marching Hornets

• Hampton University – The Marching Force

• North Carolina A&T University – Blue and Gold Marching Machine

• Southern University –Human Jukebox Marching Band

• University of Arkansas Pine Bluff – Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South

Honda will provide an institutional grant to each of the six schools for their respective music education programs and support the bands’ travel expenses to the Invitational Showcase in Inglewood. All 52 bands that participated in the voting process will also be awarded an HBOB Legacy Grant from Honda.

“Honda is thrilled to continue our longstanding support of the HBCU community through HBOB which is a core part of our Drive the Legacy initiative,” said Jasmine Cockfield, the project leader for Honda Battle of the Bands at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “We congratulate each of this year’s participating HBCU bands and are confident that they will put on a memorable show for HBOB fans that promises to be a showcase for the ages.”

Honda has supported HBCUs for over 35 years, recognizing their critical role in providing higher education and opportunities for advancement to the Black community. This support includes scholarships, programming, and initiatives that

celebrate the dreams and potential of HBCU students, helping shape them into future leaders. Through HBOB and the Honda Campus AllStar Challenge, Honda has awarded over $14 million in grants in support of HBCU education programs and facilities improvements, impacting the lives of more than 300,000 students.

Nick Cannon to Serve as HBOB Celebrity Host

The host for the 2025 Honda Battle of the Bands will be multi-hyphenate entertainer and entrepreneur Nick Cannon. Among his many film and TV credits, Cannon starred in the classic 2002 film “Drumline,” that elevated public awareness and enthusiasm about the ingenuity and creativity that is synonymous with HBCU marching bands and dance troupe culture.

“Honda Battle of the Bands has been a cherished celebration for fans of HBCU marching bands, resonating deeply with generations who hold Black culture close to their hearts,” said Cannon. “Hosting HBOB’s firstever West Coast show is an honor. We’re going to create unforgettable moments together.”

New Band Selection Process for

In addition to hosting its firstever West Coast showcase, HBOB also reimagined its approach to the band selection process. In July, the Honda Legacy Council selected North Carolina A&T University and Southern University to perform at HBOB 2025. From there, each university issued a challenge to one other eligible HBCU marching band to perform at the upcoming live event, with North Carolina A&T University challenging Alabama A&M University, and Southern University challenging Alabama State University.

Honda launched a public voting phase on July 16 and invited fans to help determine the final two bands in the lineup. Fans could vote for their favorite band once per day through August 15. The two bands receiving the highest number of votes from a roster of 52 eligible schools were awarded the final two spots in the HBOB 2025 lineup.

NFL Play 60 Event Brings Fun and Fitness to Inglewood Students

On September 17th, the Los Angeles Rams brought their NFL Play 60 initiative to Coleman Field in Inglewood, hosting a day of fun and fitness for students across the entire Inglewood district. The event, designed to encourage children to get active for at least 60 minutes a day, featured Rams mascot Rampage, who energized the crowd by giving high-fives and signing T-shirts. Rams cheerleaders and members of the team also made special appearances.

Subrina Miller, District Community Liaison Specialist, praised the event, saying, “It was a great event, our students really enjoyed themselves. Special thanks to Dr. Goolsby and her team, The Rams, and El Torito for providing lunch for our kids.”

Bennet Kew Elementary 5th grader, Ella Bunn, shared her excitement: “I had a lot of fun. I enjoyed the different obstacle courses and I got my T-shirt signed by Rampage the Ram. I also was able to make a bracelet at the craft table, too.”

The NFL Play 60 initiative, which has been promoting youth health and wellness for over 18 seasons, continues to inspire the next generation to stay active alongside all 32 NFL teams and their partners.

On Your November Ballot: Is Prop 36 the Right or Wrong Solution for Retail Theft?

Prop 36 would Increase drug crime and theft penalties and allow a new class of crime to be called “treatmentmandated felonies,” which also require some offenders to participate in drug and mental health treatment.

It would also make the crime of shoplifting a felony for repeat offenders and increase penalties for some drug charges, including those involving the synthetic opioid fentanyl. It would also give judges the authority to order those with multiple drug charges to get treatment.

Supporters of the proposition say that it is a good balance between California’s ‘tough on crime’ days and the passing of prop 47 which they blame for creating loopholes in state law that criminals use to avoid accountability for drug trafficking and retail theft. They also claim it will combat homelessness which has risen 50% since the passing of prop 47.

The intent of Prop 47 was to reduce spending on imprisonment in California and reduce the state’s prison population as mandated by a United States Supreme Court in 2011.

During the pandemic, the rate of shoplifting and commercial burglaries increased statewide. The Public Policy Institute of California found that reported shoplifting of merchandise worth up to $950 increased 28% over the past five years.

Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez (D-Pomona), a supporter of prop 36, made his stance clear in a press release in August.

“As a strong advocate for both public safety and comprehensive

treatment programs, I am proud to support Proposition 36. This measure strikes a necessary balance between accountability and rehabilitation, ensuring that repeat offenders of retail theft and serious drug crimes are held responsible while also offering a path to recovery for those struggling with addiction,” Rodriguez wrote.

“It’s time we prioritize the safety of our communities and provide the resources needed to help individuals turn their lives around,” he added.

Opponents of the proposition argue that it is misleading to present idea tough-on-crime policies as a solution to homelessness. They, instead, directly link so-called “tough” polices of the “War on Drugs” to the overcrowding of prisons in the state and the over-incarceration of Black Californians.

California Black Media spoke with Eric Harris and Carolina Valle of Disability Rights California who

strongly oppose the Prop 36.

“The kind of rush to panic at this time is misplaced and misguided based on the actual data,” said Harris. “The first folks who are going to get penalized by these types of policies –and we know this based on our long history of criminal justice work in this state – will be Black people, Latinos, and people with disabilities – with intersections among the groups.”

While supporters claim crime is increasing in California, Valle points to statistics that say otherwise. The Center on Juvenile & Criminal Justice released a study that shows the latest crime trends for 48 California cities clearly show significant declines. The data show crime declines across almost every major crime category, including an 11% decline in theft and a 17% drop in burglary, in the first three months of 2024 compared to the first three months of 2023.

“Having a felony on your record has

very drastic consequences for public safety and family togetherness,” said Valle. “Because of Prop 47, they were able to avoid a felony conviction. That person is able to get a job that they need, housing that they need, they’re able to vote, all these things that we really value for stability here in California. So, a few years ago, there was actually a ballot initiative to do exactly what Prop 36 aims to do: roll back Prop 47.”

“And voters, again, really affirmed their commitment to preserving Prop 47 and rejected that ballot initiative because you really can’t throw a rock in California without hitting somebody who has been positively affected,” continued Valle. “We want to, as voters, recommit our votes to preserving Prop 47, and we can do that by rejecting Prop 36.”

A “yes” vote on Prop 36 supports making changes to Proposition 47, which was approved in 2014, including:

•classifying certain drug offenses as treatment-mandated felonies;

•increasing penalties for certain drug crimes by increasing sentence lengths and level of crimes;

•requiring courts to warn individuals convicted of distributing illegal drugs of their potential future criminal liability if they distribute deadly drugs like fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine; and •increasing sentences for theft based on the value of the property stolen.

A “no” vote opposes changes to Proposition 47 (2014), thereby maintaining certain drug and theft crimes for items valued below $950 as misdemeanors.

Comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel couldn’t help but point to the irony in Vance’s comment: “You mean a disconnected billionaire celebrity like your running mate Donald Trump? The one who has a skyscraper with his name on it?”

Philpart, who has worked closely with the CLBC and whose organization was the benefactor of nearly $3.5 million in state funds last year, which was regranted to over 70 organizations for civic engagement and to support non-profits in our state, has also been under fire from advocates.

The night before the State of Black California event, Chris Lodgson, a reparations advocate and member of the Coalition for a Just and Equitable California (CJEC) questioned Philpart about allegations that the CBFF had been designated by the CLBC to receive $3.5 million in state funds, requested by the CLBC, to fund reparations legislation implementation.

The CBFF granted CBM $25,000 of that money to fund its Capitol Correspondent.

Lodgson asked Philpart,“What is your relationship to that funding” and whether CBFF has made any attempts to get any of the money.

“No, we don’t have any relationship with that,” Philpart told Lodgson at the meeting.

However, Lodgson asserted that he had a discussion with SmallwoodCuevas and she confirmed that “there was a plan” to fund CBFF $6 million. Lodgson also shared with Philpart that he contacted Bradford’s office and was told that there was a letter sent to Newsom’s office from the CLBC that requested the Governor to direct $6 million to the proposed California African American Freedmen’s Affairs Agency (CAFAA) and $3.5 million to CBFF.

In a letter obtained by CBM and dated May 24, the CLBC requested that the state provide $6 million to assist funding efforts related to SB

“Yeah, there’s a letter with my organization’s name on it but it is not an agreement between our organization and the (Black) Caucus, or the legislature,” Philpart said.

In a telephone conversation with CBM, Philpart said CBFF was “not getting the money” and he “had no idea” what his organization would have been doing in terms of reparations implementation had it received any funds. He added that the CLBC can still decide where the funds could be directed to fulfill what it is intended for.

“They have power. That is their discretion,” Philpart said. “They are lawmakers. and they have done the work to ensure that this money exists for (implementation) and they have decision-making authority over those dollars.”

Jackson said that the CLBC did make a collective decision to fund the agency and CBFF. Since the bills were held up with the expectations that will be brought during the next legislative session, Jackson said there will have to be another conversation among CLBC members about how the $12 million will be allocated.

“We still have to spend the $12 million,” Jackson said. “We have not gathered yet because we are all in our different districts right now to try to see what that $12 million looks like. Does it need to shift because things have shifted? Does our strategy need to shift? Those are the discussions we still have to have.”

On Sunday night, Swift appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards, urging people to register to vote while accepting her award for video of the year, which is voted on by fans. “Please register to vote for something else that’s very important,” she said, “our presidential election.”

Harris Denounces Trump’s Attacks on Haitians

In an interview with Black journalists, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris condemned Trump’s recent remarks about Haitian immigrants, calling his false claims “a crying shame.” She urged Americans to reject his divisive rhetoric and emphasized the importance of voting to stand up against hate.

“This is not new,” Harris said, referring to Trump’s long history of using racist tropes. She decried his false statements about Haitian immigrants stealing pets, labeling them “grounded in age-old stereotypes.”

Harris’s message was clear: the American people need leadership that promotes unity, not fear. Stand with Kamala Harris against lies and racism.
