Hollywood Park Announces
New Retail Tenants Opening This Fall
For The Record’s Cinevita Takes the Stage At Hollywood Park Starting December 2024
Hollywood Park, the largest urban mixed-use mega development under construction in the Western United States, announced on Friday continued momentum for its retail district with three new tenants slated to open in Fall 2024 and early 2025: Martin’s Cocina y Cantina, The Meeting Spot and Phenix Salon Suites.
In addition, Hollywood Park will be the site for the World Debut of CineVita, opening on December 3 for a limited run through April 2025. CineVita will be home to For The Record, a genre-defying, immersive experience that brings iconic films to life through music, performed by stars of record, stage, and screen. The CineVita is more than a venue—it is a pop arts destination, meticulously crafted by five generations of master tent builders in Belgium. Featuring 3,000 hand-carved mirrors, hundreds of stained glass windows, and finely
detailed wood carvings on every staircase and luxury booth seat, this awe-inspiring 15,000-square-foot space transports audiences back to the golden age of cinema. As the largest of its kind
ever built, the CineVita Spiegeltent will provide the perfect stage for For The Record’s unique brand of live entertainment.

Gov. Newsom Vetoes Jobs for Undocumented Workers at UC Campuses
On September 22, California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill which would have allowed undocumented immigrants to work at University of California campuses. While support for undocumented workers might ordinarily be a nobrainer for the progressive Democratic governor, Newsom decided Assembly Bill 2586 was too risky to approve. According to Insidehighered.com, “The bill was based on a yet-to-betested legal theory put forth by the Center for Immigration Law and
Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles, which suggests that the law prohibiting employers from hiring undocumented immigrants doesn’t apply to states or state entities such as public universities.”
Due to the bill’s ambiguity, Newsom said more clarity was needed. He is concerned that approving AB 2586 could make the UC system vulnerable to lawsuits and put universities at risk of losing federal funding. Newsom wrote in his veto message that California has been at the “forefront of expanding opportunities for undocumented students who seek to
realize their higher education dream,” but the legal risks of the legislation were too great
In a statement to the Los Angeles Times, the UC System explained, “This is a complicated situation, and we acknowledge the Governor’s basis for his veto in light of concerns that federal law would prohibit the University from hiring undocumented students, and that the implementation of this law could put our students, faculty, staff, and significant federal risk of funding.
“Given the gravity of the potential consequences of this bill, which include potential criminal and civil liability for state employees, it is critical that the courts address the legality of such a policy and the novel legal theory behind this legislation before proceeding,” Newsom wrote in his veto message
The veto is a devastating blow

The statement continued: The bill “shone a bright light on the inconsistencies of state and federal immigration policies and employment laws.”

How To Reduce and Prevent Childhood Obesity
By Willie Brown
According to the CDC, “Approximately 1 in 5 U.S. children and adolescents have obesity, with the impact disproportionately affecting Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black children, as well as those from lowerincome families.” September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and an excellent time to get educated on ways to combat this epidemic. It seems ironic that families with less money for food would account for higher levels of obesity. But the truth is food quality, nutritional value
and levels of physical activity are just as important of the amount of food consumed. Childhood obesity has a lot to do with eating habits. Families with lower incomes tend to buy lower priced items, which unfortunately are starchy, highly caloric carbohydrates which pack on pounds and inches. While it is true that overweight parents can produce overweight children, what is often inherited are poor eating habits and cooking habits. It is up to parents and other adult caregivers to change the alarming statistics on childhood obesity by changing what is on the family menu; by reinventing how food is eaten and prepared.
If you’ve ever tried unsuccessfully to lose weight, then you can only imagine what it’s like for a child with little knowledge or control over the quality of food that they eat. It’s particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start children on the path to health problems that follow them into adulthood, setting them up for serious medical conditions
as well as poor self-esteem and depression.
So, what can be done to curb this epidemic?
First, understand that the biggest contributor to childhood obesity is lifestyle. While some parents might argue that obesity runs in the family, the truth is obesity is caused primarily by consuming too many high caloric foods and drinks, while getting little or no physical activity.
Sitting for long periods of time, getting little or no exercise, eating junk food, and eating out too often or late at night can lead to obesity. These behaviors can be controlled and changed through increasing physical activity, eating more fruit and vegetables, fewer sweets and fried foods.
Social and environmental factors also contribute to obesity. There are “food deserts” within low-income areas—fewer supermarkets and an overabundance of fast food restaurants serving highly salted, deep fried foods and sugary drinks.
Despite these challenges, families can adopt lifestyle changes to reduce childhood obesity and ensure that it does not carry on into adulthood.
Obese children need support from the entire family, and one of the best ways to lend this support is to adopt healthy habits for the entire family.
One of the best strategies to reduce childhood obesity is to improve the
eating and exercise habits of your entire family. Treating and preventing childhood obesity is a team effort. Get everyone involved in exercise. Walk, play sports or ride bicycles together, as a family. Get children more involved in preparing meals.
Make simple changes like substituting fruit for salty snacks, prepping meals ahead of time so there is always a healthy food option available. It’s also important to talk to your child’s doctor to ensure your child’s weight falls withing normal range for their age and height. Ask the doctor to check for diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol especially if it runs in your family.

Usher: Past, Present, Future
By Maya Mackey
Usher has officially arrived at Uncle status. Mr. Raymond’s 4-night stay at the new, sparkly Intuit Dome—new home of the LA Clippers—kicked off last Saturday. I was lucky enough to get a ticket to the event in Club 10, one of the premier seats in the arena. The swanky club had an Instagram worthy decorative wall, with Jay Z’s infamous line in his wife’s song, Drunk in Love:
“This D’usse is the sh-- if I do say so myself.”
That quote lets you know the vibes you’re about to experience in the club seats. Other Club perks include premium food options and a lounge/bar set up. It makes you feel luxurious.
I arrived with just a few minutes to spare, so my Club 10 experience was cut short. Usher started promptly at 9 pm and crooned about every song you could want him to sing.
His show, a briefly revised version of his historic Vegas residency was built into 3 acts. The first act was Past, and Usher’s inner theatre kid shined. His earliest hits were performed on roller skates with his back up dancers (who were incredible!). You might remember something similar from his Superbowl Halftime Show this
past February.
During the second act—Present— Usher goes full theater mode. For his more obvious sexual tunes and a few of the classics (like Confessions), we saw Usher hump the stage in slow gyrating motions. Something that may have been sexy as all get out when I was 15 now feels really cringy at his big age of 45 (sorry Usher!). Meanwhile there was a stage upon the stage, where we saw two dancers in silhouette simulating love making. Parental warning: This is not a show to bring your kids.
The third act—Future--has Usher embracing his age and channeling the spirit of Marvin Gaye. After a brief change, he comes up from
beneath the stage, donning an oversized red fur coat, reminiscent of Sesame Street’s Elmo. This where he playfully asks the crowd to sing his infamous Superstar, and ignites a competition to see which side of the stadium could sing it the best.
He does a raunchy bit where he feeds his lady fans cherries. He fixes himself a drink at the bar in the VIP section and takes us to The A, as strippers perform on poles. This man is nothing if not an ENTERTAINER. He delights in debauchery but his voice is so silky smooth and his body is so flawless that you kind of forgive the rest.
He has his DJ do a special little run of LA/California hits from Blow
the Whistle to Not Like Us before shouting out the famous people in the crowd that night (namely LA Reidthe man who discovered him).
Usher eventually makes his way back to the main stage and in a blink, he’s changed again and is doing his Techno-pop hits “OMG” and “DJ Got Us Falling In Love.”
He’s slower, and it’s noticeable but again, to have abs like that in your mid -forties?! Not too much on Mr. Raymond.
His legacy is finally cemented in Hollywood, a long time coming. And, his charisma and good looks are still the star of the show alongside his impeccable catalogue and Superstar vocals.
Intuit Dome thanked Usher for a 4-night run with his own Intuit Dome embroidered bomber jacket.
His Sunday show saw the likes of LL Cool J and Boyz II Men.
The Past, Present, Future Tour is a variety show that verifies Usher’s immaculate run in R&B and “brings the A (Atlanta) to the world” as he prides himself on.
He’ll circle back to California again this November in Anaheim and I highly suggest you check it out.
T.I. and “Tiny” Harris Win $71 Million in Lawsuit Against Toy Company
T.I. and Tameka “Tiny” Harris are celebrating a huge victory after being awarded $71 million on Monday by a California jury. The couple sued and won their case against MGA Entertainment, accusing the global organization of violating intellectual property rights of their OMG Girlz music group with L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G. dolls.
The Sept. 23 verdict came after 3 court appearances by the “Live Your Life” rapper and his singer wife in a trial which spanned 4 years.
Tiny, a member of Xscape, shared her victory in a live Instagram video outside of a federal courthouse in Santa Ana, California:
“We did this for the city. We did this for the culture,” Tiny said.
“It was a fight. It was a hell of a fight,” she continued of the case that started in 2020, and lasted until Monday’s hearing. “We couldn’t be more happy.”
“We were proud to represent the OMG Girlz, Tiny, and T.I.,” their
lawyer told E! News in a Sept. 24 statement, “who had the courage to stand up for themselves and fight a billion-dollar corporation’s intimidation and insults with grace, perseverance, and a determination to
protect their intellectual property and the rights of other creatives.”
The statement added that thanks to T.I. and Tiny’s determination, “a remarkable jury did the fair, just and right thing by holding MGA
Entertainment fully accountable for trade dress infringement and for misappropriation of name, likeness, and identity.”

to undocumented students needing the financial means to support their education. “The federal government has failed Dreamers and failed on immigration reform,” Democratic Assemblymember David Alvarez, author of the bill, said in a statement after state lawmakers passed his legislation.
Newsom has previously supported services and rights for undocumented Californians, including the expansion of the state’s health insurance system to include all eligible undocumented residents. He has stopped short, however, of endorsing their rights to UC campus jobs and home loans.
Additionally, the volatile nature of the current presidential race could court unwanted outrage from conservatives about Democratic immigration
policies. According to Politico, the Biden administration had privately pressured the UC’s governing board members not to proceed at a time when the president’s reelection campaign was taking hits over the border. They ultimately postponed the matter until January of 2025.
For now, the governor is leaning toward allowing the court to decide whether undocumented people can hold job at UC campuses before signing it into law.
“Seeking declaratory relief in court — an option available to the University of California — would provide such clarity,” he said of the legal ambiguity surrounding the issue.

Harris Denounces Trump’s Attacks on Haitians
In an interview with Black journalists, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris condemned Trump’s recent remarks about Haitian immigrants, calling his false claims “a crying shame.” She urged Americans to reject his divisive rhetoric and emphasized the importance of voting to stand up against hate.
“This is not new,” Harris said, referring to Trump’s long history of using racist tropes. She decried his false statements about Haitian immigrants stealing pets, labeling them “grounded in age-old stereotypes.”
Harris’s message was clear: the American people need leadership that promotes unity, not fear. Stand with Kamala Harris against lies and racism.
