The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes; Because that’s the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides.

The beauty of a woman isn’t in a facial mole; But true beauty in a woman, is reflected by her soul.

It’s the caring that she cares to give, the passion that she shows; And the beauty of a woman with passing years only grows.

Before she met and married iconic entertainment mogul Clarence Avant, she was Jacqueline Alberta Gray, a gorgeous fashion model who was among the first Black women to promote luxury European designers like Yves St. Laurent, Pierre Cardin, Givenchy, and Jean Paul Gaultier in the 1960s.

Jacqueline was born in Jamacia Queens, New York in 1940, when Jamaica was a predominantly white neighborhood of German, Irish, and Italian immigrants.

She came from one of the very few Black families in Queens and by the time she was 20 had went to work as a hospital technician and phlebotomist, which is a key member of a healthcare team, responsible for with drawing blood from

patients in addition to mastering clinical skills, offering comfort and reassurance to patients.

She caught the attention of the man who would become her husband and soulmate for 54 years while modeling for Ebony Fashion Fair, an annual fashion show and fundraising event created by Eunice Johnson of Chicago’s Johnson Publishing Company, which traveled to 30 cities, focusing on Black neighborhoods.

Clarence revealed in the acclaimed Netflix biographical documentary ‘The Black Godfather’ that he initially did not want to get married, but encouraged by his mother wed Jacqueline and thus forming one of America’s most influential power couples.

Jacqueline Avant Murder Shocks America The tragic murder of Jacqueline Avant, the 81-year-old philanthropist and wife of legendary music executive Clarence Avant, saddened and shattered hearts throughout America.

Former President Bill Clinton-- said he and wife Hillary Clinton were “heartbroken” by her loss.

“Jackie Avant was a wonderful woman, a great partner to Clarence and mother to Alex and Nicole, an active citizen & a dear friend to Hillary and me for 30 years,” he wrote on Twitter. “She inspired admiration, respect & affection in everyone who knew her. We are heartbroken. She will be deeply missed.”

By Maygan Orr Jay’Ceon Flucus has a running start in life! This Frank D. Parent 2nd grader has been running cross-country since he was 6 years old, and will be competing in the national Junior Olympics on December 10th with his team, the L.A. Jets. He has been training 5 days a week, while still making honor roll grades. Jay’Ceon participated in the Crown City Classic Screenland 5k race and the Jet to Jetty Race, where he ranked 1st place, and he also ranked 3rd place out of 40 runners at the L.A. Jets’ 2000 yard invitational. Additionally, Jay’Ceon placed 7th at the Regional Championship, and placed 6th at the Association Championship.

Jay’Ceon’s teacher describes him as eager to learn and helpful. He assists his teacher with passing out papers, being a class monitor, and is always ready and willing to tutor his fellow classmates.

Jay’Ceon says that he would like to become a pediatric dentist when he grows up, so that he can help kids have the best smiles. His greatest inspiration is Buhia Singh from the documentary “Marathon Boy”. Buhia overcame great adversity to become one of the Continued from page 1: Say Her Name!...

Until Netflix riveting revelation of Clarence, few people outside the sphere of music and entertainment knew much about the man renowned as one of the shrewdest, savvy and most brilliant dealmakers ever known.

In an industry of snakes and sharks where talented Blacks artist and entertainers were manipulated and essentially robbed of their earnings until Clarence became the bridge to their ultimate success.

During the height and pitfall of his journey, the soothing and calming influence of Jacqueline was right there.

There isn’t anyone who met Clarence that did not meet Jacqueline who gave birth to their two children Alex and Nicole.

Both son and daughter are idealistic reflections of their mother’s generous persona, with an under belly steeling that only Clarence would provide.

Jacqueline lived to see Nicole appointed as United States Ambassador to the Bahamas from 2009 to 2011 by President Barack Obama.

She watched Alex take his own path by launching his own talent agency while be cast in the enormous shadow of his trailblazing father.

However, Jacqueline was a wife, mother, confidant and as we have since learned cheerful giver throughout her

greatest runners in India at only 5 years old. Like Buhia, Jay’Ceon wants to be an inspiration to others. Aside from running, Jay’Ceon’s hobbies include boxing, playing Minecraft, and playing with his action figures, Spiderman is his favorite.

Jay’Ceon has this advice to share with life.

Jacqueline Avant was the president of the Neighbors of Watts, which supports the South Central Community Child Care Center, and she also served on the board of the International Student Center at the UCLA. Moreover, she was entertainment chairman of the NOW benefit auction.

Jacqueline was a champion for the arts; she volunteered as a docent in the Pavilion for Japanese Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and sat on the board of The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts and served two terms as the Board President of the Museum of African American Art of Los Angeles.

There were no stronger advocates of Black America than Clarence and Jacqueline Avant.

While most celebrities, politicians and civil rights advocates seek and relish the spotlight for any deed or accomplishment.

The Avant’s were the exact opposite.

They cared less about who knew what they did, and instead focused on just doing good.

They were givers and not takers.

Movers and not shakers.

Jacqueline Avant is precisely who and what America needs during this enduring season of hate, debate and division.

I am perplexed as to why this sweet soul would be taken so cruelly.

“My Cause My Cleats” with the LA Rams

As the Los Angeles Rams took on the Jacksonville Jaguars at SoFi Stadium in Week 13 of the NFL season, Rams players also claimed it a day for charitable causes. In honor of the “My Cause My Cleats” campaign, for the sixth consecutive season, players

across the league had the opportunity to bring awareness to a charity closest to their heart by wearing the name on their cleats.

This year, in Week 13 and Week 14 of the season, more than 900 players around the league will participate in uplifting and highlighting nonprofit

organizations and causes. Some of the chosen organizations included the American Cancer Society, the Exceptional Children’s Foundation, the NAVY Seal Foundation, Boys and Girls Club of America, RISE, and more.

Los Angeles-based designer Miguel Montenegro and artist Sean Vergara

teamed up with the Rams organization to customize cleats for players and coaches who are participating in the campaign. Rams players and coaches will have the option of auctioning off their cleats after the game, where 100% of the funds raised will go towards the selected charities.

SoFi Stadium Worker Story Series:

PVJOBS, a South Los Angeles-based nonprofit that provides construction job training and employment opportunities to the local at-risk community, has placed a group of its workers to help build SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

These workers not only received invaluable construction experience and on-the-job training by working at the SoFi Stadium development project, but also an opportunity to enjoy an extraordinary assignment.

This month, Inglewood Today shares how their careers and personal lives have been forever impacted by PVJOBS and working at the SoFi Stadium development project. In Inglewood Today’s three-part series highlighting a few of these workers, here’s our first story of Inglewood native Kenneth Pojoy.

Born and bred in Inglewood, carpenter Kenneth Pojoy felt a strong sense of pride having worked at the SoFi Stadium development project.

“It felt good to do something for my community,” said Pojoy, who worked on the stadium’s intricate roofing during its construction. “It was my way of giving back to the community.”

Pojoy feels indebted to his community, given that so many others have invested in his life to help him succeed as a construction worker.

Pojoy shared that he often got into trouble during his youth, eventually

leading to his incarnation. By the time he was released, he was a young father who needed to get a job to support his two boys. Struggling to find work, particularly due to his incarceration record, his job search nearly seemed hopeless until his sister Arlin told him about PVJOBS. He soon applied to the job program, enrolling in their construction training course that led to his eventual union membership.

PVJOBS then placed him on a number of construction projects over the next decade.

After working for Kiewit Corporation on a downtown L.A. development project, a foreman acknowledged Pojoy’s hard work and recommended that he join them on their next construction project at SoFi Stadium. Pojoy jumped at the opportunity. “I’m amazed at the final project,” said Pojoy. “Now when I go to the stadium, I can feel the energy.

I can point to so many things that I worked on.”

Pojoy’s enriching construction experience has inspired him to continue his education to further his carpentry career. While he attended Inglewood’s Morningside High School as a teen, he never graduated.

So he plans to return to school to earn his GED. He says that the diploma will support his endeavor of one day becoming a project manager.

Sports & Entertainment Lakers are a mess; who’s at fault?

Time for the blame game?

Who should take the heat for the Lakers 12-12 start of season, players or coaching?

In the midst of adversity, LeBron James refused to point the finger at head coach Frank Vogel. In fact, James dismissed all Vogel criticism and was receptive to accepting the negativity that comes with the game.

“I think criticism comes with the job, you know? Frank is a strong-minded guy. He has a great coaching staff. And we as players have to do a better job of going out and producing on the floor.

So, we’re a team an organization that don’t mind some adversity., that don’t mind people saying things about us, obviously, because that comes with the territory.”

James explained the Lakers basketball precisely. As an employee of the Lakers- you have to be immune to receiving backlash, so it’s refreshing to hear James sticking up for Vogel and putting the responsibility on the players.

On the outside looking in, who really deserves the blame? Coaches are responsible for subbing players in and out and players are responsible for performing to their best ability and listening to the coach. So, the blame game can go both ways.

In this case, the Lakers rocky start could have been affected by a variety of incidents.

The talk of the town has been

Anthony Davis rejecting to start at center. He has made is very transparent, that he likes playing the power forward position and has no interest in playing center. Davis game is designed to play both inside and out- he seems to be more comfortable with his outside shot.

Then the Lakers have big man DeAndre Jordan who was brought in to play center. Jordan has yet to adjust his game in favor of the Lakers. He’s been inconsistent averaging 4.8 points,

6.0 rebounds and 0.4 assists.

Moving along to one of the biggest off-season trades, Russell Westbrook.

Westbrook’s game has not been up to par in purple and Gold. He has missed more shots than made this season, with 4.9 turnovers per game. His game has affected the Lakers with more losses than wins. However, don’t expect Russell’s game to be in a slump for too long. Once he figures things out - he will be an asset rather than a liability on the team.

The biggest guilt for Los Angeles are the transactions made in the offseason. The Lakers only have three players that rolled over from the 2020 season- so they will need time to gel.

In all fairness, you can’t put the blame on coaches, personnel or one player in particular. Doing so would be thoughtless.

But the reality is, when the result doesn’t meet expectations, blame starts to filter through the team.

College football is in order at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium on December 18, as the state-of-the-art facility will host its first annual Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl. In the evening matchup, which will kick off at 4:30 p.m., Pac-12 No. 5 team Oregon State will take on the Mountain West Conference champion Utah State. This will be the first college football game to ever be played at SoFi Stadium, which was opened in September 2020.

“We are thrilled to welcome Oregon State and Utah State to our inaugural bowl game,” said Jason Gannon, executive director of the Jimmy Kimmel Bowl. “These two teams will play the first college football game at SoFi Stadium, and we look forward to watching this competitive matchup on December 18.”

On a philanthropic note, to

support Inglewood youth through social programs that emphasize the importance of personal growth and community involvement, The Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl Presented by Stifel will partner with Inglewood community organization One For All. The Jimmy Kimmel LA bowl will also work with the Boys and Girls Club LA Harbor and the Boys and Girls Club LA Metro by helping to end food insecurity in those communities.

Along with the highly anticipated December 18 college football matchup, the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl will also host a series of events for the teams, their families, fans, and locals in the week leading up to the game, as well as year-round activities that engage the local community.

Company Makes Offer to Black Job Applicant Who Filed “CROWN Act” Lawsuit

A Southern California company recently made an employment offer to a Black job applicant it allegedly rejected because of his natural hairstyle.

Encore Global, which is registered in Delaware but does business in California, released a written statement saying the issue was a “misunderstanding” and the company “regrets any miscommunication.”

“Maintaining a diverse and inclusive workplace where every individual has a full sense of belonging and feels empowered to reach their potential are core values of our business. These values are key to fueling innovation, collaboration and driving better outcomes for our team members, customers, and the communities we serve,” the company said in a statement.

Last month, Jeffrey Thornton , through his attorney Adam Kent, filed the allegations against Encore Global, LLC, in San Diego County Superior Court. The lawsuit asserted that Thornton was denied employment because of his locs.

The lawsuit gave California’s “CROWN Act, signed into law in 2019, its first legal test.

Shane Harris, president of the People’s Association of Justice Advocates, called the company’s alleged action “mistreatment,” “hair discrimination” and the “violation of the California State ‘CROWN Act’ (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair).”

“The filing is believed to be the first

filing of its kind noting a violation of the California Law ‘CROWN Act,” Harris continued. “The bill authored by then California State Sen. Holly Mitchell sought to prohibit employers and public schools from banning natural black hairstyles, including braids, cornrows, and locs.

Mitchell now serves on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

“We regret any miscommunication with Mr. Thornton regarding our standard grooming policies -- which he appears to fully meet and we have made him an offer of employment,” Encore’s statement continued. “We are continuously looking to learn and improve, and we are reviewing our grooming policies to avoid potential miscommunications in the future.”

The CROWN Act, also known as Senate Bill (SB) 188, ensures

protection against discrimination based on hairstyles by extending statutory protection to hair texture and protective styles in the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) and the California Education Code.

Thornton said he was discriminated against in an interview for the technical supervisor position at Encore Global, an events management firm.

According to the lawsuit, an Encore hiring manager informed him on Nov. 1 that he would have to trim his hair to be hired for the position. The locs had to be cut up above the ears, away from the eyes, and with clearance from the shoulders.

Thornton’s hair is styled in locs, clean shaven around the sides and the back, and is about five inches long on the top of his head, Harris said.

“Many Black employees, including

your staff, members, will tell you if given the chance that the struggle to maintain what society has deemed a ‘professional image’ while protecting the health and integrity of their hair remains a defining and paradoxical struggle in their work experience, not usually shared by their non-Black peers,” Mitchell stated in April 2019 when she first introduced the Assembly bill. “Any law that sanctions a job description that immediately excludes me from a position, not because of my capabilities or experience but because of my hair, is long overdue for reform.”

Thornton’s relationship with Encore Global goes back to 2016 when he first started working with the company in Orlando, Florida.

In July 2021 after being furloughed by the company for about a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Thornton decided to move to San Diego after he was notified that his company would be opening new positions up in the San Diego region.

“I started my locs journey in 2019,” Thornton said.

“If it wasn’t a problem in Florida, it shouldn’t be a problem in California, right?,” he said during a news conference in San Diego. “I expected that I was to remove my ear gauges, that’s not a problem. I’d be willing to trim my facial hair. But I wasn’t prepared to be told that I would need to cut my hair in order to comply with Encore’s standards.”

Alphonso “Tucky” Blunt, owner of a marijuana product store in Oakland called Blunts and Moore, says his business is located in the same zip code where he was arrested for selling weed illegally in 2004.

Now that he is legit in the business – he opened his store in a little over three years ago-- Blunt says it is nearly impossible for Black and other minority-owned cannabis startups like his to make a profit in California.

“Where’s the tradeoff? I’ve been in the business for a few years and I’m still in the red. California has one of the highest tax rates on cannabis businesses anywhere. Oakland is in the top four of anywhere in the country,” said Blunt. “We also pay the most for armed guards. It costs like $25 to $30 per hour. The city requires us to have them – unlike Berkeley where they are not required. But police respond faster there.”

Blunt says the challenges cannabis businesses in the state face are many, including the fact that they have to pay federal taxes but can’t write off any expenses because cannabis is not legal on the federal level. Businesses like his also have challenges banking because of federal restrictions. Plus, criminals frequently target cannabis businesses and when they do, insurance companies are typically unwilling to pay for damage or lost products, Blunt says.

To address some of the challenges minority entrepreneurs in the industry are facing – particularly those who were victims of the War on Drugs – legislators in California have taken a number or steps to lower barriers to entry in the industry.

“There is no doubt that the War on Drugs has disproportionately harmed people of color and their communities,” said Sen. Steve Bradford (D-Gardena), Continued on page 7

CASA is an organization which appoints certified volunteers to advocate in the best interests of children, since they cannot speak for themselves. In L.A. County, 30,000 children, who have been abused or neglected, are under the jurisdiction of the Dependency Court.

The Linsleys started their work with CASA Brown County when Corey was with the Green Bay Packers, even getting certified to become advocates themselves. With the Chargers, they’ve gone on to work with CASA Los Angeles and CASA Orange County.

“A lot of these kids don’t have anybody in their life who’s gonna be there for them 24/7,” Linsley said. “To have somebody who is consistently there, week after week, they know that they can lean on this advocate and trust them. Trust is a huge thing for these kids. They live in a world where it doesn’t exist, so for advocates to be there for them consistently, develop that trust, develop that relationship and show them how healthy it is and beneficial it is, it’s so special for these kids and means the world to them.”

Following in the footsteps of the Chargers Impact Fund’s $30,000 ‘Digital Divide’ grant to CASA L.A. for laptops and software subscriptions, Corey and Anna personally pledged an additional $30,000 to be used as a 1:1 match to encourage even more donations to CASA L.A. and OC throughout the month of November leading in to “Giving Tuesday.” These donations ensure children and families affected have equitable access to resources and support they need.

“I think the real deal is spreading awareness to CASA,” Linsley said.

“It’s awesome to be nominated but the exposure to CASA will hopefully bring in a lot of needed advocates and volunteers in whatever form. That’s really what this is all about.”

Corey and Anna also donated $20,000 to the Chargers Impact Fund’s “Community Corner” program which provides youth and community organizations complimentary clublevel tickets at Chargers home games.

Corey’s tickets this season were designated for high school football teams, Boys & Girls Club youth, and CASA children/families.

In 2019, Bradford authored SBB 595, which established a cannabis equity fee waiver program. The Legislature passed that bill and the governor signed it into law the same year. The program was contingent on funding Bradford successfully obtained for its implementation in the Budget Act of 2021.

Right now, California is in the process of approving a $30 million fund that will eliminate business fees for some entrepreneurs entering the cannabis business in the state.

Last week, the Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) released the regulations it will follow to implement Senate Bill (SB) 166, the budget trailer bill Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law in September establishing the fee waiver program.

The program creates pathways for individuals affected by the War on Drugs to enter into the cannabis industry. Potential business owners who are living at or below 60 % of the Area Median Income; who were previously convicted or arrested of cannabis related offense; or who live in a community negatively impacted by past cannabis policies would be eligible for the program.

The waivers go towards licensing fees for their potential businesses which can range from $1,205 to $77,905. The DCC will start accepting fee waiver requests beginning Jan. 1, 2022.

The California Office of Administrative Law will publish the proposed regulations as being “under review” on its website: https://oal. ca.gov/. DCC will share instructions for submitting a public comment and participating in the regulatory process.

The agency will also announce when the comment period, which will last five days, is open to the public.

“SB 166 is part of my continued mission for the Government to atone for the wrongs inflicted on people by supporting them with opportunities to enter and thrive in the cannabis market.

I encourage anyone interested in the cannabis industry, especially equity cannabis applicants and operators, to provide comments during the short window for feedback.”

Nicole Elliott, DCC Director, says the state will continue to invest in opportunities to make the licensing businesses more equitable, particularly for people who were impacted by the War on Drugs.

“We know access to capital remains a persistent challenge for California’s equity applicants and licensees,” she said. “These waivers aim to address this challenge for those who need the most financial support.”

Bradford said for government to truly understand the challenges entrepreneurs are facing, they have to make their voices heard and talk about the barriers to entry they face.

California Goes on Offensive as Omicron Variant Threat Grows

Three days after Thanksgiving, Gov. Gavin Newsom went online to address the new COVID-19 Omicron variant, a version of the virus with at least 50 mutations, according to the World Health Organization.

26 of those mutations have never been detected before, scientists say.

“California is monitoring the new variant,” Newsom tweeted.

“We will continue to be guided by data and science. Right now, the best way we know to protect yourself is to get vaccinated and get your booster. Go today. Don’t wait.”

The variant was first identified by a South African scientist and has since surfaced in several other Southern African and European nations, and has now been detected in at least 16 states in the United States, including California.

In California, the Omicron Variant was first detected in San Francisco on Dec. 1.

Since then, Alameda County public health officials have confirmed five new cases with mild symptoms. All of them were people who attended a wedding in Wisconsin where they likely contracted the virus.

Gov. Newsom responded to the news with a tweet last Wednesday.

“CA’s large-scale testing and early detection systems have found the Omicron COVID-19 variant in California,” Newsom tweeted Dec. 1.

“We should assume that it’s in other

states as well. There’s no reason to panic--but we should remain vigilant.

That means get vaccinated. Get boosted.

Wear a mask indoors.”

Assemblymember Akilah Weber (D-San Diego), a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist, said the state has taken several steps to protect Californians and contain the variant, including “doubling down on COVID-19 vaccination and booster efforts to ensure that all Californians have access to safe, effective and free vaccines.”

Weber was speaking at a briefing organized for Black media last Friday.

She said the California Department of Health is monitoring the presence of the variant throughout California and

is partnering with the federal Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support local public health departments and health care providers across the state.

“The state is also preparing to increase COVID-19 testing at airports across California for U.S. citizens and legal residents returning from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi,” she said. “These countries are where higher rates of Omicron have been observed and may shift over time.”

Last week, President Joe Biden also pushed for vaccines and boosters in preparation for this new variant on

Twitter.

“As we move forward, we will continue to be guided by what the science and my medical team advises. For now, the best way to strengthen your protection if you’re already vaccinated is to get a booster shot, immediately,” Biden tweeted.

In a controversial move, Biden has issued a travel ban from eight African countries where the higher numbers of the variant have been reported.

“The WHO has identified a new COVID variant which is spreading through Southern Africa. As a precautionary measure until we have more information, I am ordering air travel restrictions from South Africa and seven other countries,” Biden tweeted.

This United States’ response has been met with some criticism from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“We call upon all those countries that have imposed travel bans on our country and our southern African sister countries to immediately and urgently reverse their decisions,” Ramaphosa said, arguing that the variant may have been detected in those countries, but there is no proof that it originated there.
