Gallagher,40, succeeds Marie Waldron (R-Valley Center), who led the caucus from 2018 until last week.

“James has always been a measured leader. He’s a good man. I know him and his family. He’s the right man for the position,” said Tamika Hamilton, a Black Republican, U.S. Air Force veteran and candidate to represent California’s sixth Congressional District (in the San Diego area) in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Hamilton praised Gallagher for his “common sense” approach to politics, adding that the lawmaker believes in building consensus around important issues.

“He is always willing to work with the other side. If the Democrats have a good idea, and it works for people, he will roll with it,” said Hamilton.

“I believe his vision for California includes everyone – not just for the party.”

In an interview with California Black Media on Feb. 11, Gallagher said his number one goal is to improve quality of life for Californians. During his eight years serving in the Legislature, Gallagher says he has always found common ground with Democrats.

“There are a lot of places where we are just not meeting the mark. One of those is affordability. Costs continue to rise. It is harder to afford a house.

Harder to afford rent. Our utility bills are going up. And a lot of that is due to policy, said Gallagher.

“We have convoluted programs for affordable housing and the result is: We don’t get enough built.”

Gallagher also criticized Gov. Newsom and the Democratic leadership in both houses of the Legislature, pointing to climate programs with burdensome costs to companies and customers; rising crime rates in some

part of the state; and billions spent on solving homelessness.

“But we haven’t seen a lot of results,” he said. “We want to focus on better solutions we feel will empower people to have a better life. Some solutions are bipartisan.”

Before his election to the Assembly, Gallagher, an attorney, and rice farmer, served on the Sutter County Board of Supervisors from 2008 to 2014.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science at the UC Berkeley and his Juris Doctor at UC Davis.

Gallagher is married and has five children.

In the California Assembly, Democrats hold a super majority of 60 seats compared to Republicans, who only have 19 seats. There is one Independent.

Among registered Black voters, about 73 % are Democrats while about 5 % are Republicans. About 20 % of African American voters are Independents.

There are no Black Republicans serving as State Legislators or among California’s delegations to the United States Senate and House of Representatives.

Hamilton says as Gallagher settles into his new role, he should acknowledge that the state GOP leadership has not done a good job of engaging Black Californians.

“The party has made some major missteps when it comes to the Black community,” admits Hamilton. “We have to do a better job. But what have we gotten out of the Democrats besides performance and acting? They make us think they are doing the right thing.

Gavin Newsom does this beautifully.

But where is the action behind it? They have controlled this state for decades without a change in sight.”

Hamilton says Democrats cannot continue to tout that California is the largest economy in the country when the middle class is “broke and struggling.”

The morning after taking office, Gallagher hit the ground running, pushing legislation to end the state of emergency in California.

“Average Californians are scratching their heads. Why are we still under a state of emergency?” he says. “We’ve been under a continuous state of emergency for just under two years.

Here’s the problem: when there is a state of emergency, the Legislature has less power and the governor has power to essentially enact rules and executive orders as he sees fit. Those are rules that are established for everyone without zero public input.”

Micah Grant, a Black Republican and Trustee on the Natomas Unified School District Board, says Gallagher is a guy “whose feet have touched the earth.”

Grant, who also serves as Chairman of the Board of California Black Media, says after the George Floyd riots when tempers were flaring and racial tensions were high, Gallagher joined a spirited community discussion in Sacramento with people of different races and backgrounds.

He joined the conversation and took a lot of heat from the audience, but he left the people in the room feeling like someone from State Government had listened their concerns and was willing to address them.

“James is a serious advocate for education reform – the kinds of reforms that will help Black children in California succeed. That’s the kind of leadership we need,” said Grant.

On Tuesday, Feb. 15, the statewide indoor mask mandate for vaccinated Californians expires.

As COVID-19 cases decline, public health officials say the state is easing restrictions in an effort to return the state to pre-pandemic normalcy.

“Omicron has loosened its hold on California, vaccines for children under 5 are around the corner, and access to COVID-19 treatments is improving,” said Dr. Tomás J. Aragón, Director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). “With things moving in the right direction, we are making responsible modifications to COVID-19 prevention measures, while also continuing to develop a longerterm action plan for the state.”

Many private establishments across the state may continue mask requirements in their places of business but a majority of California’s counties have announced that they will be lifting mask mandates for vaccinated people, following the lead of the state.

On Feb. 10, Newsom signed Senate Bill (SB) 115, authorizing a $1.9 billion COVID-19 relief package to bolster the state’s ongoing emergency response.

“California has led the nation’s fight against COVID-19 with a comprehensive response that has saved countless lives. As we emerge from the Omicron surge, we’re not letting our guard down,” said Newsom.

“The COVID Emergency Response Package will ensure the state has the resources to continue tackling this challenge head-on, with funding to enhance our testing and vaccination efforts, support frontline workers, strengthen our health care systems and battle dangerous misinformation.

Los Angeles County has the highest COVID case rate in the state, followed

by San Diego and Riverside counties, according to state health officials.

Both San Diego and Riverside counties plan on ending their indoor mask mandates along with the state on Tuesday.

Last week, Newsom’s administration implemented measures to make sure statewide COVID case rates continue to decline.

On Feb. 9, Newsom signed SB 113 and SB 114, extending paid COVID-19 sick leave until Sept. 30 of this year, and providing $6.1 billion in relief for California businesses, respectively.

Vaccination rates are also increasing, both at the state and national levels. As of Feb. 11, 64.3% of the US population and 73.3% of California’s eligible population have been fully vaccinated, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and California state health officials.

“Unvaccinated people will still need to wear masks indoors,” tweeted Gov. Gavin Newsom last week.

However, not all California’s counties will be following Newsom’s lead.

During a press conference on Feb. 9, Santa Clara County Health Officer and Public Health Director Dr. Sara Cody announced that the county will not be lifting mandates until officials there determine case rates, vaccinations, and hospitalizations are low enough to reopen.

“Our case rates are 40% of what they were but we still have very high levels of community transmission, still higher than at any other point in the pandemic pre-omicron,” said Cody. “The risk of being exposed to someone with COVID in our community is still high.”

The other eight Bay Area counties have announced that they will follow the state’s lead.

Councilman Alex Padilla Bask in Glow of ‘Taste of Inglewood

The Rams were going through their final preparations for their eventual big Super Bowl win at SoFi Stadium on Feb. 13, all the while ‘Taste of Inglewood’ was unfolding with its three day block party downtown on Market Street.

‘Taste of Inglewood’ featuring an array of vendors that included food trucks such as Nays Tacos, the Clippers, The Forum, fruit beverages and healthy cream for your skin was the first real event to come out of the COVID pandemic and it did not miss a beat literally.

Inglewood 2nd District City Councilman Alex Padilla was on hand for the three day event that began on Thursday Feb. 10 and concluded at 10p.m. on Saturday Feb. 12. “‘Taste of Inglewood’ has been going on in Inglewood for three or four years.

He’s a business owner here in Inglewood and a long time support of everything we’re doing in the community and he’s also one of our commissioners as well, so he volunteers to work with our city to move everything that we are doing forward and so he’s really committed to bringing entertainment, to bringing folks together to recognize all of the positive things that we are doing in the City of Inglewood,” explained Padilla to Inglewood Today.

He continued; “So, this is a family event and everybody here is having a great time, celebrating all of the good things that are happening in Inglewood, the transition that has taken place just the past five years to now for a city that’s on the move, and again a city that’s recognized as The City of Champions and we are the entertainment district for all of the state of California. We have done more in the last few years that

most states have done in generations and you only do that because you get good support from the community and you have strong leadership that believes in a vision and works together to make that vision happen.”

Padilla said that ‘Taste of Inglewood’ was the culmination of a city that believes in each other and is willing to work with each other and he paid great credit to Major James T. Butts, Jr. who’s at the top of the org chart.

“Nobody does anything without surrounding themselves with folks who can help them do the heavy lifting and with the mayor and the council, we are the elected officials and we are the ones that give the direction for the city and at the end of the day it’s about having staff when the rubber meets the road that are out here every day doing good things for our community. We couldn’t do the heavy lifting if we didn’t have a community that supported us and

backed us up and believed in what we are doing. Together we all do our part of doing that heavy lifting and Mayor Butts is at the leadership role and you need to have somebody that’s strong that God has blessed with broad shoulders,” Padilla concluded.

In addition to serving on City Council Padilla is also a Special Investigator with the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners, Office of the Inspector General, where he is assigned to the Use of Force Section. In that capacity, he oversees the Los Angeles Police Department’s investigations into its most critical and high-profile incidents, including officer-involved shootings, other uses of deadly force, and incustody deaths.

Inglewood is fortunate to have his talents in public service and just like ‘‘Taste of Inglewood’’ he represents the brightest of the City of Champions.

Sports & Entertainment My Journey to the Inglewood Rams Coronation

It was a long and exhausting week leading up to Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood and a sea of Bengals fans made themselves at home in the new sports and entertainment Capitol of the world.

After navigating on the 105 and 110 to the Convention Center in downtown Los Angeles all week to get my credential for the game and I studied the maze and wrestled with how I was

actually travel to the stadium.

When I rose Sunday morning, had my wife on standby for what would be my journey to the Super Bowl.

After showering at 9a.m., I decided to have breakfast at home, a good one, Evergood hot links, eggs and rice with a tall glass of orange juice as the clock began ticking towards 11a.m. I said lets go.

We or at least I figured that Prairie was the ticket and we would go as far as Century and I would jump out and walk the rest of the way.

It didn’t work. I encouraged her had

Mercifully, I decided to jump out at Doty and foot patrol north bound to SoFi. Along the way catching glimpse of families offering their driveway for parking for $300, selling Rams and Bengals wrestling masks and anything they could think of literally.

The elevator took us to the 7th floor where I could see the press box the one that sit in for Chargers and Rams games throughout the season, but this wasn’t just any game so I was assigned a seat in the auxiliary press section 525.

I encountered the rush of fans heading into the stadium, wearing their gear supporting their team and getting bum rushed by unofficial vendors hawking plastic chains, wide rimmed cotton hats and yes beer and water too.

My goal was to make it to gate M in one piece, with my Coach backpack stuffed with my Apple computer, note tablets, writing pens all of the instruments of a seasoned reporter of 45 years.

It’s a good thing I was smart enough to wear a T-shirt, cotton pants and tennis

which I obliged walking for another 20 minutes to only discover that I was headed to section M, gate M was another 30 minute walk west, then north east.

Whew, if this wasn’t the Super Bowl, the ticket that everybody wants, the game that over 100 million people watched, the one with Snoop, Dr. Dre, Mary and Kendrick and all of those acts that reminds me how old I am. I didn’t need 50 to be the cherry on the ice cream.

Finally, I am at gate M. Where the

At first I was a bit peeved, but at least I was in the stadium. I could hear the roar of the crown and there’s not a bad seat in the house here. After walking around the stadium for another 38 minutes so, I finally found it.

Eighteen rows high!

Thank God the Rams pulled it off, 23-20 or else I don’t know how I could have mustered the energy to walk out of the stadium to Prairie and then south to 118th before I was clear of the congestion and get my ride home.

Civil Rights Leaders Slam Tesla After California Charges Automaker With Discrimination Tanu Henry | California Black Media

NAACP California-Hawaii Conference President Rick Callender says he supports the decision of the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) to slap automaker Tesla Motors with a discrimination lawsuit. The complaint accuses the company of “systemic racial discrimination and harassment.”

Callender says “racism is rampant” at the electric vehicle manufacturer’s plant in Fremont, an East Bay city located about 44 miles east of San Francisco.

“We demand a racist free workplace.

Business & Gov. orgs should know racist behavior is not tolerated in CA. Who thinks they should own a @Tesla now?” tweeted Callender after DFEH filed the lawsuit Feb. 9.

“Segregation at the Fremont factory, along with the absence of Black and/or African Americans in leadership roles, has left many complaints of rampant racism unchecked for years,” says the lawsuit filed with the Superior Court of California in Alameda County.

“As early as 2012, Black and/or African American Tesla workers have complained that Tesla production leads, supervisors, and managers constantly use the n-word and other racial slurs to refer to Black workers,” the complaint continues. “They have complained that swastikas, “KKK,” the n-word, and other racist writing are etched onto walls of restrooms, restroom stalls, lunch tables, and even factory machinery. They have complained that Black and/or African American workers

are assigned to more physically demanding posts and the lowestlevel contract roles, paid less, and more often terminated from employment than other workers.”

The Rev. Amos Brown, co-chair of the African American Empowerment Council, vice-chair of California’s Task Force to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans and Pastor of Third Baptist Church in San Francisco, also condemned Tesla.

“The struggle continues. Racism is not dead. This is just another virus that is rearing its ugly head,” he said. “It is time this nation and corporations admit, atone, and act to end racism so that there will be equality of opportunity for African Americans.”

More than 15,000 people work at the Fremont plant, according to the

DFEH lawsuit. Blacks make up about 20 % of workers on the assembly lines and about 3% of corporate employees.

There are no Black executives.

The lawsuit also alleges that, in the past, there have been few opportunities for advancement for Black employees, and they are disciplined more and more harshly for violations than other races.

“As the former director of Rainbow Push Coalition’s Automotive Project, I know how imperative it is that we continue to call out discrimination in any form. I’m not surprised because this is indicative of their culture. Tesla doesn’t support communities of colors in the way in which it does business,” said Glenda Gill, a member of the Black Women’s Collective strategy committee. “Recently, I attended an automotive industry event and Tesla won three top ethnic markets awards.

They didn’t show up or acknowledge the recognition. That says a lot about their culture and people in leadership.”

“The facts of this case speak for themselves. DFEH will continue to take steps to keep workplaces free of harassment and racism,” he said.

Tesla responded to the DFEH lawsuit in a blog post, calling the legal action “misguided” and stating that the claims date back to a period between 2015 and 2019.

“The DFEH has decided to sue Tesla instead of constructively working with us. This is both unfair and counterproductive, especially because the allegations focus on events from years ago,” Tesla’s response reads.

“Tesla strongly opposes all forms of discrimination and harassment and has a dedicated Employee Relations team that responds to and investigates all complaints,” the post continues.

Yet, in 2020, DFEH says it received 31 Tesla employee complaints citing discrimination based on race, gender and other factors.

Last year, a San Francisco jury ordered the company to pay a Black employee, Owen Diaz, $137 million.

Diaz, who was an elevator operator, says he was traumatized because he suffered racial abuse while working for the automaker.

“They would call me boy or ‘n-word push the button on the elevator,’” Diaz told KTVU in Oakland. “And when I was complaining to Tesla’s upper management and letting them know what was going on, it’s like I became public enemy number one.”

Diaz said the verdict in his case was a message to Tesla CEO Elon Musk: “Clean your factory.”

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Planning Commission of the City of Inglewood, California, will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at the hour of 7:00 p.m., to consider the following: 1.

A public hearing to consider an application by Beth Aboulafia representing Target Corporation for Special Use Permit No. 2022-002 (SP-2022-002) to allow the sale of beer and wine for off-site consumption in an approximately 35,000 square-foot one-story retail tenant space that is part of a multiple tenant mixed use development on an approximately 2.77-acre site at 220 North La Brea Avenue and legally described as Lots 1 through 32 of Block 305 (APN 4015-028-013 thru 023).

A Notice of Exemption (EA-CE-2022-005) has been prepared stating that the proposed project is categorically exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), a copy of which is available for public review in the first floor lobby of City Hall and via email at asalazar1@cityofinglewood.org.

Zoning Code Amendment No. 2022-001 (ZCA-2022-001) to make modification to Chapter 12 of the Inglewood Municipal Code (Planning and Zoning) related to the Inglewood Transit Connector Project; 5.

Design Standards and Guidelines for the Inglewood Transit Connector Project.

A Draft Final Environmental Impact Report has been prepared, a copy of which is available for public review

The Planning Commission will be asked to make a determination regarding the public hearing item. In making a determination for the public hearing item they must also make an environmental determination for the agenda item.
