80,000-Seat Sports Stadium Proposed for Inglewood Initiative to Appear on 2015 Ballot

By Veronica Mackey
.A. area media is all abuzz with the latest news about a proposed 80,000-seat stadium to be built in Inglewood. Just days into the new year, the big announcement arrived at a January 5 press conference in front of Inglewood City Hall. Hollywood Park Land Company (HPLC) unveiled the City of Champions Revitalization Project, an initiative for expanded development in the heart of Inglewood, which would add a sports and entertainment complex to the previously approved Hollywood Park Tomorrow project. He added that the Hollywood Park Tomorrow project has been in development for several years already. “It is called the City of Champions Revitalization Project (because) it is bringing the city back in terms of civic pride and the notion that Inglewood has served the county as far back as the 30s with the race track and the 60s with the Forum. It brings back that prominence and that stature,” McCallum said. Los Angeles has been without an NFL team since the Rams and Raiders left in 1994. Since Kroenke purchased the property, speculation has been swirling about the Rams returning to Los Angeles. Does this mean the stadium is being built for the Rams? Meany said there has

Inglewood Named 2014 LA Neighborhood of the Year
C
urbed LA (www.la.curbed. com), a highly regarded real estate site has named Inglewood as the “2014 Neighborhood of the Year.” The honor is a result of the site’s annual reader voting contest to determine the Los Angeles County area neighborhood with the most interesting and progressive developments. Communities are ranked in terms of economic and social factors. “I am proud to announce that the City of Inglewood has prevailed and been voted the Los Angeles Neighborhood of the Year for 2014,” Inglewood Mayor James Butts said. “We are....once again....the City of Champions.”
Inglewood beat out Bunker Hill, the powerful Arts District, Los Feliz, and South Park to win the coveted 2014 Curbed Cup Golden JPEG. There are a number of factors that led to Inglewood being considered by Curbed LA for the competition, Mayor Butts said, as noted by the website: “Last year dawned with the reopening of the renovated and morefabulous-than-ever Inglewood Forum, now run by the people who manage Madison Square Garden, and it’s already the most successful large venue in Los Angeles by a huge margin, hosting nearly a third of all the arena shows in the region last year.
Meanwhile, work began on the Crenshaw Line, which will have two stops in the city, and Inglewood’s mayor landed a powerful seat on the Metro board, replacing Santa Monica’s mayor in a significant geographic shift.” Congratulations to Inglewood for winning this award and joining the list of Curbed’s Neighborhood of the Year award winners. “I would like to recognize the hard work of all our City of Inglewood employees that have persevered through challenging times and maintained a high level of quality service, and positioned the City and its leaders to seize opportunities over the past 3 years,” Butts said.
Missing Stuart Scott
S
tuart Scott, the humorous, highenergy, sports announcer on ESPNs SportsCenter, whom Kobe Bryant said “changed the game,” is being remembered as much for his cameo film roles and catchphrases as the sports legends he covered. Scott, 49, who died of cancer on Sunday and joined ESPN in 1993, developed a broad fan base on the sports cable network. In fact, Scott’s popularity with fans led to several cameo appearances, including: “He Got Game,” “The Kid,” “Drumline,” “Mr. 3000,” “Herbie: Fully Loaded,” “The Game Plan,” and “Just Wright.” The irrepressible Chicago native changed the way sports was covered, simply by being himself. He connected with his audience and made the broadcasts an entertaining narrative instead of a bunch of rote statistics. “He was a trailblazer,” says ESPN anchor Stan Verrett, “not only be-

He did not shy away from the fact that he was a black man, and that allowed the rest of us who came along to just be ourselves.” His catchphrases and colorful accounts of sports action made Scotts’ broadcasts exciting to watch. From his animated “Boo-yah!” to “Hal-
lah,” “Just call him butter ’cause he’s on a roll” and “Holla at a playa when you see him in the street,” fans embraced the sayings and the man. When he was seven, Scott and his family moved from Chicago to Winston-Salem, N.C. He would later attend the University of North Carolina, and become part of the on-air talent at the student-run radio station WXYC. He graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts in speech communication. In 2001, he gave the commencement address at UNC where he implored graduates to celebrate diversity and recognize the power of communication. In addition to SportsCenter, Scott hosted Monday Night Countdown and events like the NBA Finals. He also sat down with presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. “I will miss Stuart Scott,” President Obama said in a statement. “… Wherever I went, I could flip on the TV and Stu and his colleagues on (Continued on page 11)

When asked if there has been discussion on whether the Rams would move, or where they would play, Mayor Butts responded, “One thing there has not been any discussion of, any teams moving. The only discussion that I have had revolves around the City’s economic climate, and what a great place it is to develop.”

January Events
J
By Anne Cheek La Rose
anuary is always exciting because it’s the start of the New Year. 2015 is no exception. There are some fun and educational events taking place this month, of which you should be aware. On Saturday, January 10, the community is invited to the main Inglewood Public Library. From 1-2PM Michael Massenburg will unveil his mural in the outer lobby of the Library. Mr. Massenburg’s mural, “Inglewood Stories,” encompasses Inglewood through images of her people. Research for the mural was taken, in part, from the Inglewood stories recorded during the month long LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) Inglewood Art project that took place last July. From 3-5PM, Poetess Malaika J. Beckford will present her anthology of Inglewood Poetry in the Gladys Waddingham Lecture Hall, across from the Library plaza. This anthology was born in free writing workshops conducted by Ms. Beck-
ford at the Library and two other sites in town. Both projects were funded through the Arts Commission IGAP (Inglewood Growing Artists projects) grants. Refreshments will be served at the event. Sunday, January 18 is Inglewood Free Day at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art). Spend the day exploring world-class art from 10-7PM. Gather family and friends for this informative day of exploring the many galleries and exhibits at LACMA. The surrounding communities invited on this day are Altadena, Compton, Hacienda Heights, Montebello, Monterey Park, San Bernardino, and Torrance. To gain free admittance, go to a ticket booth and use the code phrase LACMA9. Lastly, Monday, January 19 is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration in Inglewood. This year marks the 32nd year that Inglewood has celebrated the life and legacy of
Anne Cheek La Rose Dr. King. This year’s theme is “Advance the Dream.” We will mark the day with a program starting at 9AM in the Crozier Middle School auditorium at 120 W. Regent Street. The program will feature gospel choirs, keynote speakers, and wonderful speeches from elementary, middle, and high school students based on this year’s theme. The students presenting their
speeches were chosen from several finalists. These students worked hard on their presentations, not only writing the speeches but memorizing them for the judging last month. It is inspiring to watch each student deliver their speech and see that they, so young and with no first-hand knowledge of Dr. King, fully embrace the legacy of this great man. Following the program, instead of a parade, Inglewood chooses to recreate a symbolic civil rights era march. At approximately 11AM the march will start at Crozier and end at the Forum. King Day festivities will continue at the Forum with a festival of commercial and community vendors, interactive games, food trucks, and live entertainment by Radio FREE KJLH 102.3 FM, the entertainment sponsor. Other sponsors for King Day are Sky Posters, The Madison Square Garden Company, Inglewood Unified School District, and Southern California Gas Company.

Publisher’s Message
It Keeps Getting Better
I
f you are reading the print edition of Inglewood Today, then you have noticed something unusual. The entire cover is devoted toward news about the City of Champions Revitalization Project. It is just that important! Last week, we focused on the successful impact that the renovated Forum has had on Inglewood. Within just one year’s span of time, Inglewood has out-booked Staples Center and the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine. Yes, the Forum, buoyed by a $100 million investment by Madison Square Garden and world class entertainment, is truly “fabulous” again. Just one week later, Inglewood has been named the “2014 L.A. Neighborhood of the Year” by real estate website, CurbedLA.com. The site holds an annual reader vote contest to determine the community with the most progressive development. But, the really big news—and why I felt it necessary to change the format this week—is the announcement of an 80,000-seat stadium to be built in Inglewood adjacent to Hollywood Park. The Forum has not only made Inglewood the City of Entertainment, but the stadium will make Inglewood once more the City of Champions. It is the cherry on top, the shining star, so to speak on just how far we have come in just a few years. Every destination city has a stadium and a major entertainment venue. It is what drives revenue, creates jobs, and attracts tourists from all over. Now Inglewood will have both. So let’s see: By 2018, Inglewood will add to the Forum as major cultural and tourists attractions, the sprawling 238-Hollywood Park Tomorrow, with upscale homes, retail centers, a casino, hotel, parks

Willie Brown, Publisher, Inglewood Today Weekly and schools PLUS an additional 60 acres for the new sports stadium. By this time, the Crenshaw/LAX light rail, with two stations in Inglewood will be operating to bring passengers to and through our city. It’s going to be absolutely amazing. Add to that, our growing community or resident artists, new school building projects, and franchise businesses that continue to come here, and you have a city that would rival many of its neighbors. It wasn’t that long ago when Inglewood was considered a “bedroom” community, a place to ride through. This turnaround has not been easy, but it speaks to the leadership and the commitment of residents who held onto their vision of something better. While Inglewood may not have the glitz and glamour (yet) of its South Bay neighbors, it more than makes up for that in spirit. It’s easy to look good when your community is dotted by multi-million dollar homes. But pulling off a deal like a major sports stadium, despite being a predominately black and brown city, on the lower income end of the South Bay—now that’s something pretty special. Inglewood residents should be very proud of what has just occurred, and it will only get better.
Just Saying... Don’t listen or focus on the evils of life, it will only detour you from recognizing your blessing. Happy New Year!!!
Yvonne Horton

Family Wins $8 Million in Case Against County Sheriff
I
n another controversial case where a black man was killed, allegedly as a result of a choke-hold by police, the suspect’s family has been awarded $8 million. A Long Beach civil jury awarded the money to the family of Darren Burley, a 29 year-old man whom Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies admitted to engaging in a violent struggle with in Compton. Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call on Aug. 3, 2012 because Burley, high on PCP, was choking a pregnant woman. Plaintiffs argued that during the struggle, the deputies blocked the flow of oxygen to Burley’s brain. Deputies denied ever applying a choke-hold, although they admitted to punching Burley, zapping him with a stun gun and using their body weight to force handcuffs on him. His death, they
Attorney Carl Douglas say, was caused by sudden cardiac arrest brought on by chronic drug use. Burley died 12 days after his arrest. While county prosecutors declined to charge deputies David Aviles and Paul Baserra, citing Burley’s violent behavior, and ju-
rors found Burley to be 40 percent at fault, they still found the county negligent and guilty of battery. “Mr. Burley was subject to an illegal choke-hold and suffocation when deputies put too much pressure on him face-down during a misdemeanor arrest,” family attorney Carl Douglas said. Douglas made the announcement on his Facebook page on New Year’s Day: “Just Bangin’ The Drums.. After deliberating for two days, the jury in my wrongful death trial awarded the family of Darren Burley $8 Million. Hallelujah!! Our team of lawyers, Jamon Hicks, Olu Orange, and John Sweeney fought the County lawyers for six weeks before Wednesday’s tremendous verdict. Mr. Burley left a wife and five kids under 14, each of whom’s life

Though no amount of money will ever bring their Dad back, they will be able to be secure in the memory that his life did matter, and the fair minded people of Long Beach agreed. “This money will truly result in the dawning of a new day for each of them. How appropriate on New Year’s Day!!” Douglas is best known for being one of the defense attorneys in the O.J. Simpson murder case. He is the former managing attorney for the Law Office of the late Johnnie Cochran Jr. before starting his own firm, The Douglas Law Group. Among his other clients was singer Michael Jackson (both trials), actors Jamie Foxx, and Queen Latifah.

Selecting Your Options for Weight-Loss Surgery By Kurti S.
A
dvancements of medical science have brought in big changes in weight-loss surgeries. Over weight can pose serious health threats such as coronary heart diseases, diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, and more—and eventually reduce one’s life expectation. Obesity is a growing concern worldwide. Changes in lifestyle and food habits have increased the number of overweight adults and children to an alarming level. When you are searching for obesity treatment make sure that you make an informed decision because each type of weight-loss surgery has its set of pros and cons. Weight-loss surgery is also referred to as bariatric or obesity surgery. It is often the last resort to help one lose weight. The size of the stomach is altered through the surgery to manipulate the food intake capacity of the patient. Weight-loss surgeries have gained much popularity recently but these aren’t free from complications. Weight-loss surgeries can increase your chances for gallstone, cause vitamin or fluid deficiency in your body; or increase your chances of ulcers, etc. So, you must consider all your options before deciding about surgical weight loss. What are the major types of obesity surgery? Laparoscopic adjustable banding: Doctors will often suggest adjustable gastric banding surgery for weight loss. It is preferred by doctors since it minimizes scopes of
surgical procedure creates a detour in the stomach for the food to go directly to the small intestine. The surgeon creates a small pocket at the top of the stomach and then cut the small intestine from the stomach and adjusts it to the created pocket. This way the food bypasses the bigger section of the stomach and therefore, the body absorbs fewer nutrients and calories. Sleeve gastrectomy: The stomach is cut lengthwise and the portion is removed to make the stomach look like a tube or sleeve. As a result, the stomach holds less food. It is the most permanent form of bariatric surgeries as a portion of the stomach is completely removed. Liposuction: Although it is not a weight-loss surgery in true sense, because it doesn’t affect one’s food intake ability, liposuction is a popular form of cosmetic surgery that helps the patient get rid of excess fat tissues and makes him slimmer. India has made great advancements in performing a wide variety of weight reduction surgeries. As a result, both international and domestic patients are opting for weight loss surgery India in large numbers. Laparoscopic Adjustable Banding Kirti S is a writer and web enthusiast. An End to Acid Reflux?
N
early everyone gets heartburn now and then. But the fiery sensation that grips your chest and throat after eating spicy food, for example, can also be a symptom of a more serious condition: gastroesophageal reflux disease, which in its most chronic form can lead to cancer. For years, the roughly one-third of Americans with GERD have mainly relied on prescription or over-the-counter medications to reduce stomach acid. However, as we’ve learned more about the potential long-term effects of the newest class of drugs called “proton pump inhibitors”—which now take up more space on the shelves than good ol’ Tums ever did—that’s made for a different kind of heartburn.
“The Food and Drug Administration has issued numerous warnings about PPIs, saying long-term use and high doses have been associated with an increased risk of bone fractures and infection with a bacterium called Clostridium difficile that can be especially dangerous to elderly patients,” the New York Times has reported. That helps explain the current excitement over a simple outpatient procedure that may actually correct GERD for good without the need for invasive surgery. Stretta Therapy (www.strettatherapy.com), which is FDA-approved, uses radiofrequency (RF) energy delivered to the muscle between the stomach and esophagus to, in effect, “remodel” the problem area.
“The sphincter muscle gets thicker and stronger, so it won’t open as easily,” explains Dr. Mark Noar of Endoscopic Microsurgery Associates in Towson, Maryland, who performs the procedure in his own practice. Dr. Noar is also the lead author of a newly published, peer-reviewed study that tracked patients for 10 years after receiving Stretta Therapy, which is covered by most insurance (including Medicare). Among the most remarkable findings: 72 percent were found to have remained GERD symptom-free. That’s almost a job requisite for someone like Kathleen Dickinson, who—loathe to even consider surgery—sought the doctor out for Stretta Therapy after what she describes as “years of suffering” and
concerns about possibly developing osteoporosis from the medication she’d been taking. “For me, it wasn’t just that I couldn’t enjoy my favorite dishes,” says the 70-year-old Maryland woman. “I’m a corporate trainer, and the constant coughing and clearing my throat affected my speaking presentations.” She’s now back to eating Mexican food. Oh, and one final reminder: While heartburn may be the most common symptom of GERD, it’s not the only one. Others include chronic coughing, sleep apnea and a change in voice. Source: NewsUSA

Couples also often get tripped up when it comes to handling money requests from needy family members. Make sure you’re on the same page to prevent tension later. Are the big items dragging me down? According to Elisabeth Leamy, Good Morning America’s consumer correspondent and author of Save Big: Cut Your Top 5 Costs and Save Thousands!, it’s the big items, not the small ones, that hurt people’s finances the most. She suggests focusing on minimizing your mortgage, car, health, debt, and grocery payments. Buying a used car instead of a new one, for example, can save drivers tens of thousands of dollars. Plus, she says, since “cars these days are really well built, the risk is lower than it used to be.” Am I wasting money by carrying debt? If you’re paying down a $10,000 credit card bill with a 15
percent interest rate, then you’re paying about $1,500 a year to carry that debt. If you’re paying off a $10,000 car loan at 6 percent, then you’re wasting $600 a year on interest. If you can find the extra cash, consider paying off those loans so you can stop throwing money away on debt payments.
