Sheriff Baca Announces Retirement

T

he ink is barely dry on L.A County Sheriff Lee Baca’s retirement notice, and already at least three men are entering the race. Baca announced suddenly on Tuesday that he will retire at the end of this month. He will not seek a fifth term in office. Former L.A. County Undersheriff Paul Tanaka, former Commander Bob Olmsted and L.A. County Assistant Sheriff Todd Rodgers have announced their intention to run for office. Citing personal and private reasons during a press conference at the department headquarters in Monterey Park, Baca admitted remaining in his post would not be good for the department. He called his decision to retire “the most difficult of my professional life.” “We’ve had a great journey over the years,” said Baca. “I’ve held fast to the core values of this great department. That’s who I am, that’s who we are.” Baca’s exit comes amid a scandal. Andre Birotte Jr., the U.S. Attorney for

Baca described a run at a fifth term in office as “a campaign of negative contentious politicking.” A source close to Baca said he is stepping down so he will not be a distraction from the positive work the department has been doing. L.A. County Supervisor

Inglewood’s Future? (Continued from page 1) in the community will grow. This will attract more business owners and developers and, in return, vacant lots will disappear. That’s an optimistic thought. However, it leads me to wonder what types of businesses will begin to sprout in the community. Who will benefit from these new businesses that stake their forks in Inglewood soil? Tax revenues are a sure shot revenue generator for any municipality, but there comes a time when a city must define its culture. And there isn’t a better time than now to begin looking internally to answer those questions. Our school district is not in the best of shape, and our City is in a period of transformation. As an entrepreneur and creative professional, I believe the time is now for creative and economic opportunity. And who better to partner with, than our own young entrepreneurs, economists, community leaders, and agents of change? If we are going to truly make Inglewood a destination haven for developers, entertainment, and business owners, we have to make it a destination for the individuals who live here RIGHT NOW. We need to begin implementing programs that introduce our young people to the ideas of entrepreneurship, innovation, and job creation, rather than the traditional method of training students to become “well behaved workers.” By doing this and giving students opportunities to pilot their ideas in the community with a strong community support system, we are not only investing in our youth, but we are practically ensuring that our young people will return home and start their businesses here after graduating college. Some may even launch their businesses in the community right out of high school. They say the millennial generation has a short attention span, a sense of entitlement, and little patience. According to Forbes and Entrepreneur.com, those qualities aren’t necessarily bad, especially for young entrepreneurs. I believe that it’s the responsibility of educators to understand the children they are educating, and create curriculums that cater to their strengths. There shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all education module that ALL students must conform too. It explains why students around the country are opting out, dropping out, and simply checking out during class time. According to a Bloomberg Business Network article titled: The Case for Teaching Entrepreneurship in High School: “New research from the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) argues that the benefits of teaching young people how to launch and (Continued on page 10)

ctor James Avery, best known for his role of Uncle Phil on the hit sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” passed away on New Year’s Eve. He was 68. The cause of death was complications from open-heart surgery, which he underwent on Nov. 11, 2013. Avery died at a hospital in Glendale, California, according to manager Toni Benson. Avery played Philip Banks, the stern but loving uncle to Will Smith’s character on the show. The role endeared Avery to Fresh Prince fans worldwide, who “adopted” him as their own uncle. On his Facebook page, Smith noted: “Some of my greatest lessons in acting, living and being a respectable human being came through James Avery. Every young man needs an Uncle Phil. Rest in Peace.” “He strove to present an Uncle Phil that everybody wishes was their

ative way, you get creative answers to problems…and that’s what’s dying… People are getting stuck on computers and that does not engender creative thought, which art does.” Avery’s career spans nearly 30 years. He began writing TV scripts and poetry for PBS. Aside from his role on Fresh Prince, which lasted from 1990-1996, the actor appeared in multiple TV shows and movies, including “CSI,” “That ‘70s Show,” “The Closer” and several appearances as a judge on “L.A. Law.” His deep, melodic voice made him a sought after voice actor as well, landing him roles as Shredder in the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” series and James “Rhodey” Rhodes in the 1990s animated series version of “Iron Man.” Avery’s own life was reflected in Smith’s role as a street-smart teenager raised by a single mother, and

gave impetus to his tough love persona as Uncle Phil. In a red carpet interview, he said his mother “never got the info that a single woman couldn’t raise a male child. Her motto was I’ll raise you or I’ll kill you. And there was no room for failure. Her attitude was you do what you say you do, and that was it.” Avery’s ground breaking role of a successful lawyer helped open the door for more positive black role models on television. He noted that “the biggest obstacle to overcome was racism. We all had to overcome that, but it acted as a challenge to me. I wasn’t going to let (it) defeat me.” He is survived by his wife Barbara Avery; his mother, Florence Avery, and a stepson, Kevin Waters. No official word was available about funeral services at press time.

Forum Reopens With a Huge Record

here will be a new, albeit temporary, landmark greeting LAX passengers on top of the Forum’s roof when the Eagles open on Jan. 15—a 250,000 sq. ft. piece of spinning vinyl. The world’s largest vinyl record, built in just 10 days, will coincide with the reopening of the Forum and is a recreation of the group’s multiplatinum hit “Hotel California.” The record will be visible from the sky, spinning continually to announce the newly renovated facility. It will be removed sometime in February. Madison Square Garden Entertainment (MSGE) approached marketing, promotion and public relations company, Pop2Life, in September about creating a stunt to promote the reopening. Erik Murphy, president and CEO of Pop2Life, said he got the idea after studying photos of planes flying over the Forum. He created a mockup of the design using a Google Earth aerial shot of the facility. The giant record is 407 feet in diameter, spins at 17 MPH and took more than 50,000 pounds of materials. The structure is wind-resistant up

to 80 MPH and is visible from more than one mile high. It took 200 continuous hours to print the vinyl, and more than 20,000 total man-hours to design and build. The Eagles’ six night show is a full

The building’s GM Nick Spampanato said MSGE “wanted to make a big statement that we are here, and at the same time draw a direct line to the history and future of this historic venue.”

My Predictions for Inglewood in 2014

his time of year, we find all sorts of articles which predict what the new year will bring. Predictions come from everywhere—prophets, business analysts, even people like Nostradamus who died centuries ago. While I leave dire predictions of doom and gloom to those who claim to know the answers, I will comment on what I want to see happen. Predictions are often based on the current trend of thought. The outcome is influenced by whether you are thinking positively or negatively. Judging from how the year is starting for Inglewood, I expect some pretty good things to happen. Inglewood residents and businesses were disappointed Tuesday night over the lack of jobs and contracts offered by the MTA in regard to the light rail project. But I predict a turnaround. Bottom line: They have to do the right thing. There are too many people watching them. Inglewood is in a much better bargaining position now that it has the commitment of corporate investors coming in. I am confident Mayor Butts, the City Council and other leaders will fight for us. The MTA cannot give all the money to L.A. because the train has to come through our city to get from LAX to Crenshaw and vice versa. The MTA may have been able to get away with it in the past, but today is a new day. I predict home values will continue to rise in Inglewood as business expands in the area. This leads to my next prediction—more tax revenue to fund our schools. Coupled with the smart leadership of school administrator Don Brann, the Inglewood Unified School District will turn around. It won’t happen this year, but we will continue to see improvement. Here are some of my other expectations for 2014:

Just Saying... Willie Brown, Publisher, Inglewood Today Weekly January – The Forum becomes “fabulous” again! Thanks to a huge investment by Madison Square Garden, the iconic Inglewood venue reopens with a sixnight concert by the Eagles. The event will officially kick off Inglewood’s comeback as a destination city. Hundreds of jobs, prosperity for nearby businesses, and a big boost to the City’s tax base are expected. March – Inglewood will begin sound insulating another 1,000 homes within 12 month. It will be a repeat of what would have occurred from contract year, March 2013-March 2014. April – The Hollywood Park Tomorrow project breaks ground, ushering in hundreds of more jobs, upscale housing, restaurants, entertainment and retail centers, office space, and parks. There’s plenty to like about this. Inglewood’s political season will begin during the second half of the year, culminating with the mayor and city council races. The outcome should not be surprising. So here are my predictions for 2014. Remember, perception has a lot to do with the outcome. We’ve got a clean slate, the clock has been reset. Let’s leave the negative behind and give our leaders and ourselves a fair shot at a new and prosperous year.

A new year without a new attitude is simply another day.

8 Steps to Healthy Weight Loss in 2014 – Part 2

I

am 30 lbs. lighter than I was this time last year. As I mentioned last week in part one of this article, I gave up wheat bread, exercise 10-15 minutes a day and eat no later than 8pm. There is no “one size fits all” way to lose weight, however. And a healthy life—not just weight loss—is the ultimate goal. Regarding the wheat, however, I do recommend a book called Wheat Belly by William Davis, M.D. I discovered the book after I lost weight, but it pretty much confirms what I suspected. The wheat, at least for me, made it difficult to shed the pounds. As the doctor explains, the wheat we consume in America is genetically modified. It not only contributes to obesity, but also arthritis, skin rashes, high blood sugar, and more. If this resonates with you, check him out on YouTube: http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=DfY0qnH-m8I Last week, I outlined 4 steps to

are familiar with the health benefits of fiber, much of this knowledge is usually centered around bowel movements. Fiber is the part of plants that our bodies can’t digest. It passes through our digestive tract without providing nutrition or calories. Yet, it offers numerous benefits—keeping colon cancer and high cholesterol at bay, and controlling weight. Fiber makes us feel full sooner and stays in our stomach longer than other substances we eat, slowing down our rate of digestion and keeping us feeling full longer. To increase your intake of fiber, eat more whole and natural foods, and fewer processed foods. Some good examples of fiber-rich foods include: legumes (lentils, dry beans and peas), vegetables, fruits, brown rice, and whole grains (rice, oats, barley, etc.). As you increase your fiber intake, do it gradually. Rapidly increasing your consumption of fiber may re(Continued on page 8)

Moore was helping him prepare for the lead in the West Coast production of the Broadway play “The Wedding Man,” he said. hydrates are the primary fuel source for many vital organs, including the brain, central nervous system and kidneys, so they are not a bad thing. It is misleading to say that eating carbohydrates alone causes weight gain because pounds are packed on more as a result of consuming too many calories, whether they are from carbohydrates, protein or fat. A diet high in “good carbs” like fruit and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and low-fat dairy products can help you lose weight because the high fiber content helps you to feel fuller than junk food or “bad carbs.” Eating rice, potatoes or pasta do not necessarily make you fat. But eating too much of them, never exercising and going to bed an hour later can definitely contribute to obesity. Generally speaking, white bread should be avoided because it is full of sugar and lacks nutri-

Step 6: Limit the “Bad” Carbs Does eating carbs really cause weight gain? It depends on what type of carbs you eat, and how much. So before you write carbs out of your life, it is important to understand their function. Carbo-

What You Can Do to Prevent Breast Cancer

E

very year, 1.3 million women across the globe are diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast cancer awareness is high, but the primary focus of research is on early detection and treatment rather than prevention. Detection and treatment are undeniably important, but many feel prevention deserves more than the 2 percent of funding it currently receives, especially given the promising preventative strategies already out there. One of these strategies could make preventing breast cancer as easy as warding off the flu. While the causes of breast cancer are diverse, nearly 40 percent of women with breast cancer test positive for a virus called the Human Mammary Tumor Virus, which could be completely prevented if there was a vaccine. In fact, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic have developed a breast cancer vaccine that targets a protein found in most breast cancers, and they announced a month ago that they are planning to begin clinical trials in two years. Luckily, you don’t have to wait until the breast cancer vaccine is available to protect yourself. Here are three research-proven natural approaches to help you prevent this all-too-common disease. 1. Get the Toxins Out with Panchakarma: Environmental toxins collect in the fatty tissue of the breasts, where they may contribute to the development of breast cancer. Panchakarma is a detoxification treatment that can effectively eliminate these toxins from the body. Consisting of saturating the body with oils, pulse diagnosis, massage, heat treatments and internal cleansing, it is per-

ents. Replace white grains with brown grains like oats, rye or wild rice. Chips, cookies, pies, and cakes should be restricted to once or twice a week, if at all. You could easily add 300 to 500 calories a day or more on junk food alone. If you’re unaware of what you eat, you’ll never get to the root of your weight problems. Keeping a food diary even for a week is a real eye opener for most people.

formed in a spa-like setting with medical personnel.
 2. Take Medicinal Mushrooms: Japanese medicinal mushrooms have extraordinary immune system-supporting and cancerfighting properties. The most effective way to consume them is in concentrated supplement form. One highly researched mushroom supplement is AHCC, a fermented extract of medicinal mushroom mycelia (roots). AHCC is widely used in clinics throughout Asia to bolster the immune system, reduce risks of infections and provide complementary support for the treatment of cancer, Hepatitis C, liver disease and Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Observational human studies have suggested AHCC can improve outcomes and quality of life in breast cancer patients. In one study, 33 percent of breast cancer patients taking AHCC experienced remission. 3. Allow Love In: Studies show that women who develop breast cancer give more love
than they receive. By surrounding yourself with nurturing relationships, you can reverse this unhealthy imbalance. Dr. Horner is a nationally recognized surgeon and one of the country’s leading experts on breast cancer prevention. She ran a successful campaign to pass laws requiring insurance companies to pay for breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Dr. Horner’s book Waking the Warrior Goddess: Dr. Christine Horner’s Program to Protect and Fight Breast Cancer has just been published in its third edition. Source: NewsUSA

Adding to the difficulty is the fact that sugar hides itself in many forms. Generally speaking, the sugar code can be broken by understanding a simple suffix called “ose.” If you see an ingredient that ends in “ose,” it is probably a form of sugar. Common sugars are sucrose, dextrose, lactose, maltose, fructose and high fructose corn syrup. Sodas are among the major culprits of weight gain. Today JP Morgan Chase Back in Debt Collection Business?

By Paula Langguth Ryan, CM Press

ack in 2011 JP Morgan Chase brought their collection lawsuits to a screeching halt. One client of mine drafted an answer to a newly filed Chase credit card debt collection suit in late 2011 and the only response she got was that the suit was dismissed “without prejudice.” Chase disappeared into the night, reserving the right to refile at some distant time. But they virtually closed up their debt collection division like con men closing up a long time sting operation. At one point, the number of debt collectors in the division could be counted on one hand (and yes, I have all five digits still!) Is NOW the time for Chase to start pursuing lawsuits against folks who have old credit card debt with the too-big-to-fail bank? Maybe yes, maybe no. Signs point to yes but it certainly won’t be business as usual for Chase. Just this week, we settled two old Chase credit card debts for debt negotiation clients with ease and grace. And for the amount our clients could afford. This is the first

progress made on Chase debts in nearly two years, so it’s extremely welcome. And it got me to thinking. My gut says JP Morgan Chase is going to take a kinder, gentler approach to debt collection. No more bull in a credit repair shop for these guys. Here’s a brief summary of the back story in case you’re new to the Chase saga. First, Chase reached a record $13

This is the second state (CA sued Chase in May) to initiate legal action against JPMorgan on behalf of its residents. I expect others will follow AND JPMorgan will want to build up a new image (kinda like Target, Lululemon and Abercrombie & Fitch are gonna have to do this year). everaging the power of social media through Facebook and Twitter, Educate Black America is an Internet site for opportunity and prosperity. Everyone with access to a computer can be included by liking and sharing Educate Black America on Facebook, following Educate Black America on Twitter, by joining the ABC Club from the Educate Black America web site at www.am-blk-coll.com, and emailing them at mindsandmoney@usa.net. Supporters linked to the Educate Black America Network can now receive immediate notification of scholarship awards and availability, as well as employment and intern opportunities. Their mission is to strengthen Black America by raising the bar on educational attainment on all levels, provide a significant new source of funding for scholarships and provide a foundation for individual and collective economic prosperity. The Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as the web site provide full details. The site’s success will depend on supporters using their online purchases from the Educate Black America Shopping site, www.amblk-coll.com, to generate millions

of dollars in scholarships for black higher education. Leveraging the economic power of Black spending overcame racial discrimination in the South in the 50s. That same determination and focus, plus the support of others, can strengthen deserving students to achieve their educational dreams. Scholarship funds come from the money people spend online, while contributions to the United Negro College Fund and the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund come from charitable donations. Educate Black America funds are a new source of education funding separate and independent of these two fine philanthropic organizations. Educate Black America Spokesperson and former Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm said “Educating Black America is something we must do, can do, and should do.” Since 1988, Educate Black America (formerly known as America’s Black Collegians) has generated millions of dollars in financial support of black higher education. If everybody does their part, the trillion dollars spent by consumers and businesses in Black America and other supporters of black higher education can generate a $100 million fund. The funds will be avail-

able to underwrite scholarships that include K-12, college, post secondary trade and career, distance learning, as well as management and professional studies. “The goal will be met if a penny out of every $100 spent can be leveraged through the Educate Black America initiative,” according to Alvin J. Lee, founder and former Fortune 500 executive. “With a user base that includes over 10 million households, more than 750,000 businesses, and 50 million people, the $100 million annual goal is achievable when people take action and leverage their buying power through the Educate Black America Shopping site.” To begin 2014, Educate Black America created a $100,000 Challenge Award grant to be awarded in January based on online purchases between Thanksgiving and Christmas 2013. It’s all about the money and how it flows. When shoppers buy directly from retailers, the stores can maximize their profits as opposed to revenue sharing through partner marketing programs such as Educate Black America. In both cases, shoppers receive the same products, services, and prices. Educate Black America shoppers can choose from

top American retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Macy’s, Walmart, Advance Auto and many more. Educate Black America Shopping has products and services for you, your house, your car, your family, your pets and your business.” For travel spending, Enterprise Car Rental, Expedia and Hotwire are part of EBA Travel. Full details are on the web site under EBA Travel. For 2014, the program has been expanded with Appleseed offering an opportunity for people to participate and share in the scholarship awards and expansion of Educate Black America across the country. Appleseed is an exciting and innovative self-help development program that makes it possible for people, businesses, organizations, and nonprofits to earn cash and scholarship awards. ABC Ventures will be hiring marketing coordinators in local markets across the country to promote and support Educate Black America. Honolulu and Chicago Want Obama Library

n 2014, a nonprofit will be formed and a group selected to raise seed money for the future Barack Obama Presidential Library. The question is, where will it be built—Honolulu or Chicago? People in the president’s two hometowns—his place of birth and his adulthood residence—are campaigning for territory. Like countries who bid for the Olympics, political leaders and educators are making the rounds, hoping to bring home the coveted prize. Gov. Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii) said University of Hawaii professor Robert Perkinson is coordinating a statewide campaign with a budget granted by the university. Hawaii is the sentimental favorite because it is where the president was born. According to an AP report, Abercrombie has talked with President Obama’s sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng and to Obama’s childhood friend Bobby Titcomb about his plans.

The AP also reported the state’s development authority has set aside several pieces of land as potential library sites, with an emphasis on picturesque Hawaiian views. Meanwhile, Chicago players are lobbying for a library in the “windy city.” They argue it is in Chicago that the president got his political start. It is where the road to the White House was paved. Chicago will probably win this contest. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) has pretty much conceded that point, but added that the president can have a presence in his birth state as well. He hopes President Obama will choose to base a post-presidential think tank or philanthropic efforts in Hawaii. “We really don’t see it as an either-or proposition,” said Sen. Schatz, who has assisted the effort for years as a former lieutenant governor and state lawmaker. “We see no reason that the president has to be forced to choose between his two hometowns.”

I’ve seen over and over again that you can.” Considering the times we are in, and the future we are all desiring in our community, it’s time to get more innovative with our approach to the development of the Inglewood of tomorrow. And a program like the NFTE’s couldn’t hurt. Apparently, it’s working, considering their impressive stats: • 99 percent of alumni over the age of 25 have a high school diploma, compared with 85 percent of the larger population. • Half of NFTE alumni who graduated from college earned degrees in science, technology, engineering, or math. Fortyseven percent of NFTE grads with STEM degrees were African American, more than six times the

national rate. Fifty-one percent of NFTE alumni in the survey were African American. When I think of the vacant lots, office spaces, and retail storefronts now, I see Parent Elementary art contest winner, Aniya Connor’s very own art gallery. I see a senior from Morningside High School who went to school for Culinary Arts, cutting the ribbon to his own fusion restaurant that blends Motion Graphic and Compositing Animation with fine dining to allow guests to eat wherever they want in the world. I see an Inglewood High School graduate running a technology startup that designs sustainable furniture and appliances. I see Inglewood’s very own Film and TV Production Studio. That one is mine. DMV Laws Affecting Motorists Bicycles – Passing Distance. AB 1371 (Bradford), known as the Three Feet for Safety Act, will require a motor vehicle driver passing a bicycle that is proceeding in the same direction to pass with no less than 3 feet between any part of the vehicle and any part of the bicycle or driver. When three feet is not possible, the motor vehicle must slow to a reasonable and prudent speed and only pass when no danger is present to the bicyclist. Failing to do so can incur a fine, regardless of a collision or not. This law will take effect September 16, 2014. Clean Air Vehicle Decals / “HOV Stickers.” AB 266 (Yee) and SB 286 (Blumenfield), together extend sunset dates for low emission, zero emission vehicles to operate in high

occupancy vehicle lanes (HOV) without meeting occupancy requirements to January 1, 2019. Commercial Driver’s License. AB 1047 (Linder) will allow the DMV to conduct the commercial drive test for the holder of an out– of–state commercial learner’s permit. The department would electronically transfer the information to the motor vehicle department in the applicant’s state of residence. AB 1047 also modifies the license class definitions to require a driver operating a bus weighing more than 26,000 pounds to hold a commercial Class B license and a driver operating a bus weighing 26,000 pounds or less to hold a commercial Class C license. DMV Vehicle Registration Pilot Program. SB 806 (Hueso) authorizes DMV to establish a pilot program to evaluate the use of alternatives to stickers, tabs, license plates, and registration cards, subject to certain requirements. It will also enable the DMV to experiment with electronic license plates, as well as facilitate DMV’s ability to explore cost–effective alternatives to California’s

traditional metal license plate, plastic–coated registration stickers, and paper registration cards. Registration and Vehicle Transfers Between Family Members. AB 443 (Lowenthal) prohibits the transfer of ownership of a vehicle to a relative or a revocable living trust until all parking or toll-violation fines and penalties reported to the DMV are paid by the transferee. Veterans License Plates. AB 244 (Bonilla) Requires the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) to sponsor a veterans’ special interest license plate and requires the DMV to issue the veterans’ plate if CalVet meets the current statutory requirements. This law creates, in addition to the current Honoring Veterans design of the Veteran’s Organization Plate, a new program to reissue the Veteran design that was issued prior to January 1, 2010. These plates are available to all vehicle owners. The Department of Veterans Affairs must secure 7,500 pre–paid applications in order for the department to implement this plate program.
