SAT, ACT Tests to Undergo Major Changes

I

t has been a major criticism of educators that seemed to have fallen on deaf ears until now— low performance of African Americans on SAT and ACT tests. The tests, which are required for admission into most 4-year colleges in the US, are outdated and biased toward the experiences of white students, critics say.

But beginning in 2016, things will change. The SAT point scale will be lowered from 2,400 to 1,600, antiquated vocabulary words will be eliminated and the essay portion of the exam will be optional. Additionally, students will no longer be penalized for wrong answers.

According to an article on TheRoot.com, “Throughout the history of the SAT and ACT, black students’ average scores have been the lowest among all race groups.

the ACT is 17, compared with 22 for white students, and the national average for black students on the SAT is 860, compared with 1,061 for white students.”

The disparity of test scores by black students, compared to those of whites, raises questions about the significance of the tests toward long-term college success, not only for African Ameri-

cans, but for any students.

It is not clear yet whether lowering performance standards on these tests will more accurately predict college performance. However, the American Educational Research Association, the American Psychological Association and the National Council on Measurement in Education warn that minimum test scores should not

Celebrating Women’s History Month The History of Women: 1990s

S

uccess is often met with resistance, and it is not uncommon for setbacks to follow a period of progress. This is what the political scene looked like for women in the early 1990s.

Women made steady progress in the 1970s and 1980s—taking leadership positions in Corporate America, gaining government support and resources to start their own enterprises, and winning seats in Congress.

The election of President Bill Clinton in 1992 was considered a victory for women, especially with his wife Hillary taking a leadership role in the White House. But that movement was apparently more than most Americans could take.

Despite Clinton’s willingness to include more women in high government positions, many women, as well as men, felt uncomfortable with the president’s wife having an office in the West Wing.

The backlash against Hillary was met with resistance. However, there was an undercurrent going on which would soon put the women’s movement back on tractk. That movement was spearheaded by the Clarence Thomas hearings in 1991. Anita Hill and other women testified that the Supreme Court nominee had sexually harassed them. Women were waking up to the fact that they did not have to tolerate sexually suggestive remarks or gestures by men in the workplace.

At Clear Gardens, students are taught in the Vinyasa Flow Yoga tradition, which simply means, linking breath to movement. “Lengthening the breath and along with the movements, creates rhythm. I want to begin teaching workshops on breathing and meditation.”

Honestly, when most individuals think of the practice of Yoga, you think about whatever the media has framed for you as the archetypal representation. But when asked what life lessons Yoga has taught Collins, she said, “We all have ups

and downs, and we don’t know what’s going to happen. Yet, we keep breathing, and we keep moving. Yoga equates to life.”

Collins mentioned that she wants to provide this training where it’s needed, and I believe that’s a noble undertaking. This is especially needed in communities where stress levels are heightened due to poor quality of life conditions. Yoga is realigning the breath, and synchronizing the breath with movement.

It doesn’t require focus, it actually brings you into focus. It relaxes you, while providing health benefits to the body. We may laugh at the beads that drape Russell Simmons neck, but in my opinion, if more of our community practiced Yoga, imagine the outcome.

We’d be able to imagine ourselves as we did when we imagined things…When we were curious.

Congresswoman Waters Demands Action to Improve Emergency Response at LAX

ongresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), whose district includes Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), issued the following statement today regarding the release of a report by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), about the response and recovery efforts following the November 1, 2013, active-shooter incident at LAX: “I am shocked and dismayed by the revelations included in LAWA’s report on the response and recovery efforts following the November 1st active-shooter incident at LAX. This report is an embarrassment. LAWA spends $125 million on security every year. With this level of investment, LAX should have a state-ofthe-art emergency response system.

“I join with the entire Los Angeles community in mourning the loss of TSA Security Officer Gerardo Hernandez, who was shot and killed

in the line of duty during this tragic incident, and I commend the efforts of all of the law enforcement officers and first responders involved in apprehending the suspect and preventing him from killing any additional people.

“Nevertheless, LAWA’s emergency response system clearly failed on this critical day. LAWA’s report explains how problems in coordination between various police and fire departments resulted in multiple command posts at different locations that did not unify for 45 minutes.

“The report also reveals numerous technical problems. Incompatible radio systems interfered with emergency response efforts, and many of the airport’s red phones and panic buttons were not working properly. When a TSA agent picked up a red phone immediately after the first shots were fired, the airport

police operator who answered the call had no way to determine where the call originated.

“LAX, which is located in my district, is the third busiest airport in the United States and the sixth busiest airport in the world. It generates jobs for 294,400 workers in Los Angeles County and serves nearly 66.7 million passengers every year. The safety of all of these workers and travel-

ers is of paramount importance.

“The emergency response failures included in this report are simply unacceptable. I expect to hear more from LAWA on how the recommendations in this report will be implemented and what other measures will be taken to improve emergency response protocols and protect the millions of people who frequent this airport.”

Council Revisits Parking Enforcement

“Green teams” were formed at Kelso and W. Claude Hudnall Elementary Schools to teach kids how to recycle, what to recycle and why it is important. Dawn Harris of Republic noted that the program provides a learning opportunity for parents as well.

Planning for Emergencies

T

he early morning wake-up call on Monday, in the form of a 4.4 earthquake was just a minor jolt for many of us in Southern California. Although widely reported in the news, shakers have become so common that most Californians write them off.

We even joke about them most of the time.

Thoughts of “the big one” return each time we experience a tremor, but we soon go back to our normal lives. Some may check their emergency supplies, but for the most part, life continues as usual. “I know I should get more earthquake kits,” you tell yourself. But that is probably the last thing you actually do.

Maybe it’s Hollywood, year ’round gorgeous weather, or the belief that we have more time that prevents us from taking action now. But the possibility of a major devastating quake is not that farfetched. We know this, so why don’t we take emergency preparedness more seriously.

The answer to that question prompts another one. Why do human beings, in general, procrastinate? Why do we put off doing the things we know are good, right, and necessary for our own good, and those in our lives and community?

What are you doing to help the situation? Are you and members of your household doing your part to conserve water?

On June 3, Californians will elect county, state and national officials. Are you registered? If you are registered, will you vote?

If “the big one” came tomorrow, would you have enough food, water and supplies ready to survive for 3 days? If something happened to you, would your family know where to find important documents?

The saying that we should stay ready, so we don’t have to get ready is so true. Life, like earth-

quakes, is unpredictable.

Every spring, when the time changes, we are reminded to change the batteries in our smoke alarms.

It’s also a good time to sit down with your family and go over emergency plans. Make sure everyone is up to date on contact information; where important papers are kept; and where and how to meet in case of an emergency evacuation.

There will be no time, and you

may not have the presence of mind to calmly figure things out when disaster strikes.

No one wants a disaster, and I am certainly not predicting one. But again, it’s better to stay ready than have to get ready. Let the recent earthquake serve as a gentle nudge to make the time now for emergency preparedness. Do it now, while you have the luxury to think in a calm manner.

An ordinance was passed that will give the council authority to use outside personnel from the private sector for parking enforcement. The vote does not eliminate parking enforcement jobs, but allows the option for the outsourcing of parking enforcement, if it is deemed in the best interest of the City.

Resident Lynette Lewis said she worked “to make sure people from Inglewood got (Casino) jobs but they didn’t get them. “They hired people outside of Inglewood. They didn’t run the card club well. I would like to see what kind of jobs are available. I would like to see the other entities that are here beside Chris Meany and

that group.” She then asked Assistant City Manager/Chief Information Office Mike Falkow about any personal financial interest in Holly­wood Park.

“I’m not sure where this rumor has begun, but I have no vested interest or my family in Inglewood, other than the City of Inglewood, which is my current employer,” Falkow said.

Lewis was also unhappy about how the Inglewood police handled the recent student walkout at Inglewood High School.

Leroy Fisher doesn’t think it’s right that people to have to pay to attend Mayor Butts’ “State of the City” dinner. He said the ticket prices were too high, and named cities who charge anywhere from $0 to around $50 for similar events.

“I think it’s really a shame that we should pay you to hear about the city,” Fisher said.

Butts also addressed the police issue: “There was no SWAT team there.

And I know you know what a SWAT is, Ms. Lewis. The call we got was that there was a disturbance at the school, and objects were being thrown. They (police) never entered the school property.

Councilmember Ralph Franklin had reservations about approving the ordinance for parking enforcement personnel. He said he had a “number of issues” regarding parking enforcement, which pertained to the language.

For example, he said there is a wide variance on the length of time different vehicles can be parked.

Some vehicles must be moved after 2 hours, some 24 hours, and others

72 hours.

“There is too much mixture going on here to have it adopted as submitted,” Franklin said. He was also concerned about language that states Inglewood police would have to get approval from the Dept. of Transportation to direct traffic on a state highway.

Councilman Eloy Morales said, “The Dept. of Transportation is aware we have a public works director, and they are aware we regulate (traffic). I don’t see an issue…”

“In my 37 years (in public service) I have never been asked to get approval from the Dept. of Transportation to direct traffic on a state highway, so those conflicts do not exist,” Butts said.

They Have Fundamentally Different Learning Patterns, Says Pioneering Expert

A recent study from researchers at the University of Georgia, which followed 10,000 students as they moved from kindergarten to eighth grade, indicates that though boys scored well on tests, indicating mastery of material, girls got better grades. Researchers account for higher scores in girls because they comported themselves better than

boys while in the classroom.

“I think that, by now, most academics have accepted that boys and girls have fundamentally different learning needs; girls are better at sitting still and listening, whereas boys learn better via kinesthetic learning, which involves more physical activity,” says Dixon, who has more than three decades experience as a teacher and is a parent of boys, and is the author of “Helping Boys Learn: Six Secrets for Your Son’s Success in School,” (www.HelpingBoysLearn.com).

Senate leader Darrell Steinberg said he expects Wright would leave the Senate if a formal conviction is entered at his sentencing May 16, meaning a special election would then be held to replace him.

These projects conserve drinking water supplies by using recycled water for non-drinking water purposes (irrigation, parks, industrial cooling towers). • Movement matters: Nearly every time, the student who disrupts class because they cannot sit still is a boy. Research reveals that young boys’ brains develop a tremendous amount of neural wiring to facilitate movement and sensitivity for how things “fit” together. When a boy is a toddler, we would never think that a sedentary child is a good indicator of health, so what makes us think that he should change while in grade school? One tip: Allow a boy to use his “movement wiring” by allowing him to use his body as he learns to represent the topic.

• Games work: Their testosterone makes males naturally competitive. If you want them to become suddenly engaged in something, make a game out of the lesson—it’s just like flipping a switch on. Just look at sports talk shows with analysis such as “Pardon the Interruption;” each expert has a clock clicking down to make his point. Little gaming tricks like this works on the male brain. Tip: create clear rules – they help boys understand victory, and they add legitimacy to the lesson. Games also serve as an excellent method for male bonding, too.

• Make them laugh: Observe a group of males; whether young our old, they bust each other’s chops. Not only is it okay, they enjoy it! Everyone has a positive chemical reaction with laughter; boys, however, often

use humor as a form of communication, an asset with which most girls do not have a problem. Research has demonstrated that boys’ emotions are processed initially in the more primitive parts of the brain and come more indirectly to the speech centers. That’s why making a crude joke is easier for males to communicate sensitive feelings. Tip: Before starting homework or an assignment, ask a boy to consider what might be funny, weird or strange about it; his mind will be more focused on the topic afterwards.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg; if parents and teachers are serious about getting their boys off to a better start in life, I encourage active participation and education,” Dixon says.
