SAT, ACT Tests to Undergo Major Changes

I

t has been a major criticism of educators that seemed to have fallen on deaf ears until now— low performance of African Americans on SAT and ACT tests. The tests, which are required for admission into most 4-year colleges in the US, are outdated and biased toward the experiences of white students, critics say. But beginning in 2016, things will change. The SAT point scale will be lowered from 2,400 to 1,600, antiquated vocabulary words will be eliminated and the essay portion of the exam will be optional. Additionally, students will no longer be penalized for wrong answers. According to an article on TheRoot.com, “Throughout the history of the SAT and ACT, black students’ average scores have been the lowest among all race groups. Currently, the national average for black students on

the ACT is 17, compared with 22 for white students, and the national average for black students on the SAT is 860, compared with 1,061 for white students.” The disparity of test scores by black students, compared to those of whites, raises questions about the significance of the tests toward long-term college success, not only for African Ameri-

cans, but for any students. It is not clear yet whether lowering performance standards on these tests will more accurately predict college performance. However, the American Educational Research Association, the American Psychological Association and the National Council on Measurement in Education warn that minimum test scores should not
