What Makes Cinco de Mayo Such an American Day?

inco de Mayo is growing into a larger celebration every year in the United States. Yet, in Mexico, where this holiday originated to commemorate the victory the Mexicans won over the French in 1862, it is celebrated mainly in the area around Puebla, where the battle took place. In the US, celebrations occur from coast to coast. According to the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at UCLA, Cinco de Mayo has been commemorated in California in some form or other since the 1860s. This is not surprising since there has always been a large proportion of Latinos in California. They chose to honor this triumph of ingenuity over might, even though it has become a minor holiday in their native land. In the United States today, Cinco de Mayo is more

TMZ broadcast the recorded conversation between Sterling and thengirlfriend V. Stiviano, telling her not to bring black people to his games, especially Magic Johnson. Ironically, Stiviano is Black and Latino.

n the wake of the recent scandal that’s got the entire country standing on podiums, I noticed something rather fascinating. Some friends asked me, if I was a Clippers player, would I have played in the game last Sunday after learning that my team owner was a (Continued on page 2)

Calling Sterling’s comments, “deeply disturbing and alarming,” Silver said he would urge the board of governors to force a sale of the team. Sterling was apparently upset when Stiviano posted a photo of herself posing with Johnson on Instagram. During the April 9 conversation, which is about an hour long, Sterling was heard to say: “It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?” (3:30) “...Don’t put him [Magic] on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. And don’t bring him to my games.” (9:13) A confidential source to TMZ said the couple got into an argument because Stiviano refused to sign a confidentiality agreement. She often tags her Instagram photos to Random House and other major book publishers, which suggests a tell-all book is in the works. Clippers Coach Doc Rivers said, “I think Adam was fantastic.” He added, “It doesn’t matter the wealth, you want to work for someone that you have their respect.”

The Clippers were warming up for their fifth playoff game against the Golden State Warriors while the news conference was being held in New York Tuesday. Chris Paul said the team was very emotional during warm-up and overwhelmed by the love and support of their fans. A crowd of protestors held signs denouncing Sterling outside Staples Center. The Clippers won the game and now lead Golden State 3-2 in the best-of-7 series in the Western Conference. “Coach talked about it in our locker room (and) I’m sure it’s been tough on her (Rochelle Sterling, estranged wife) also,” Paul

said. “She came to our game to support us in Golden State, and for us it’s tough, but I can’t imagine how tough it is for that family, so we’ll let them get through that. I think the biggest thing for us is getting back to basketball and doing what we love.” Meanwhile, Sterling may lose more than a basketball franchise. There are allegedly 100 hours or more of audio recordings in Stiviano’s possession. An unnamed TMZ source said Sterling had reached out to his former girlfriend and asked how “he could make it go away.”

However, I’m not alone in those sentiments, as the NBA officially announced its disciplinary actions upon Clippers owner Donald Sterling, banning him from the league and slapping him with a nice $2.5 million fine. The nail in the coffin came when it was announced that the NBA was going to encourage its owners to force Sterling to sell the franchise. It’s interesting how this entire situation unfolded. From the multitude of voices that expressed their viewpoints and feelings on the matter, some being extreme, and oth-

ers passive, the voice of the players seem to have spoken the loudest as stories are coming out that the players with help from Sacramento Mayor and former Phoenix Sun, Kevin Johnson, were planning to boycott their next playoff game if Sterling was not removed from the league. I also think about the impact social media has had on this scandal, and it’s nearly impossible to ignore the millions of individuals who took to Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to apply pressure on the league by threatening to stop watching basketball games. A public protest was organized via Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, and took placed last night close to Staples Center. When I put this into perspective with how it relates to our commu-

nity, I see the community beginning to embrace the change that’s coming, and saying, okay, what are the problems, and how do I contribute? The vision of our city’s tomorrow is being shaped as each day fades into the next, and it is our responsibility to stand on our soapboxes, take to Twitter, take to Instagram and Facebook, and take to City Hall on Tuesday nights. It’s time to send our emails, or simply pick up the telephone and make the effort to connect. The Sterling scandal demonstrated the immense power solidarity has to move mountains, and that with organization and a shared common goal, tomorrow is ours for the taking, we just have to slap on the full court press.

Edison International Awards $1.2 Million in Scholarships to Edison Scholars

ongratulations to 30 high school seniors across Southern California Edison’s (SCE) service territory who have been named 2014 Edison Scholars, each winning a $40,000 scholarship offered by Edison International, parent company of SCE. The scholars live in or attend public or private high schools in SCE’s service area and plan to pursue college studies in the science, technology, engineering or math fields, also known as STEM. More than 1,400 students applied for the scholarships, a 92 percent increase over the previous school year. Eduardo Orozco, a City Honors student from Inglewood, is one of this year’s recipients. He was recently accepted to MIT. Councilman Eloy Morales congratulated Orozco and presented him with a plaque from the City of Inglewood. “Congratulations to Eduardo Orozco for this great accomplishment. Eduardo and his family are an example of the families we have in Inglewood, hardworking, intelligent, and willing to do everything necessary to get a great education

Eye on the City The Flyer Conspiracy

T

he agenda for Tuesday’s council meeting was light, so time was spent discussing the City of Inglewood’s responsibility for ending offensive junk mail. Councilman Alex Padilla responded to comments made earlier by Aldene Sligh, who accused him of conspiring to try and run seniors out of Inglewood. She received a flyer in the mail a few weeks ago from a company looking to buy houses. She visited the company in Padilla’s Second District and did some digging. “I found out he has the same last name as you and he contributed to your campaign,” Sligh told Padilla. “Don’t lie to me. I think there’s a campaign to move the older citizens out of this community. Councilman (George) Dotson, since the flyers

are being delivered into your district, I would have expected you to say something.” “As it relates to (the) business, I have no financial interest in that business. I meet with realtors all over. I don’t care who it is. If they are interested I will meet with them. My name does not show up on that filer, I am not promoting it,” Padilla said. “The last time I looked, we live in America. As a councilman, I can’t do anything about that. There is no way I can stop anyone from printing anything. If there is something you disagree about, throw it in the trash,” Dotson said. Councilman Eloy Morales said there are limits to what the council can do. “They think we can control everything from their houses being

foreclosed on and their kids getting kicked out of school,” he said. The council adopted a resolution approving the FY2014-15 Citizen Participation Plan. Three public hearings were set to receive comment for citizen participation during the FY2014-15 Consolidated Plan process. A hearing was set for May 13, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. to receive public comment on the priorities for community development and housing needs. Comments on the City’s Draft FY2014-15 Action Plan will be heard on June 24, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. A final hearing on December 9, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. will be held to receive public comment on the Draft FY2013-14 Consolidation Annual Performance Evaluation Report. Mayor James Butts corrected an

inaccurate comment made earlier that people would be in danger of losing their homes, if they took out a home improvement loan and missed a mortgage payment. “I don’t believe that is true. The loan stays with the property. It isn’t a foreclosure. They can’t repossess your property for it. When the property is finally transferred, that’s when the money’s owed,” Butts said. City Treasurer Wanda Brown congratulated Councilmen Dotson and (Ralph) Franklin on their recent town hall meetings. “The meetings are an excellent opportunity for those not able to attend the council meetings. It’s also an opportunity to dispel rumors that you hear about the City, like giving $18 million to a church. Why would we give (Continued on page 11)

he NAACP knows what it feels like to be snubbed. They were snubbed when President George W. Bush turned down an invitation to speak at their annual convention in 2004. It happened again with President Barack Obama in 2012, and with Mexican President Vicente Fox in 2013. Each of these presidents cited scheduling conflicts as an excuse. Whether or not this was the case, the NAACP did not buy it. Apparently their outrage against the presidents, however, was not enough to keep the NAACP from doing the same thing to the black media, who has supported them with countless and free publicity during their long 100 year plus history. The NAACP has now landed in the unenviable position of having to apologize to black newspapers nationwide for snubbing them with a gross lack of advertising. Not a single black newspaper, large or small, carried the organization’s 42nd Annual NAACP Image Awards Magazine. The guide went out to white newspapers, but not to black ones. The word spread quickly through the National Newspaper Publishers Association, which represents more than 200 members of the black press, that no one got an ad buy, The NAACP apologized Wed­ nesday to black community newspapers around the country for the advertising snub at the recent Image Awards, blaming the mistake on an advertising contractor. One has to seriously question hiring a contractor that doesn’t understand the importance of placing the NAACP guides in black newspapers. President Ben Jealous can apologize all he wants, but it’s hard to believe the blunder was not intentional. His blaming the advertising contractor on the omission would be more believable if the guides had not been advertised in any publications. But to exclude all black papers. and then publicize in a few white ones seems too calculated of a move to support. As NNPA Chair and publisher of the Los Angeles Sentinel Danny Bakewell said in a statement, “The fact that they are buying the message from the white papers

Willie Brown, Publisher, Inglewood Today Weekly and they want us to convey the message free in black papers is insult to injury.” Leigh Owens of TheUrbanPolitico.com wrote: “For years, there has been serious debate around the relevance of the NAACP and it’s ability to connect to the modern generation of Black folks whose plight is much different than when the organization was first started and a much different need existed. Obviously a mishap, such as ignoring black media as a whole, for your annual television program will not help.” Many community newspapers have gone out of business in recent years due to the recession, increased printing costs and a shift to online publishing. When black organizations and businesses do not support their newspapers, it has a negative economic impact on the community as a whole. Maybe Owens is right. Maybe the NAACPs failure to include black papers in its advertising budget is a sign of things to come. Maybe it doesn’t need the black media to promote it because it no longer has anything relevant to say. Maybe, it’s finally on its way out. There was a time when the NAACP could be counted on to speak for the voiceless, to stand up against injustice and inequality. In turn, black folks at all economic levels supported the organization with their time, effort and dollars. Jealous said in a statement that if the contractor wants to do business with the NAACP again “they must convince us they are capable of keeping their word.” Black publishers will be watching, Mr. Jealous, to see if you will do the same.

Autumn Burke Focuses on Education, Business and Job Creation at Assembly Campaign Kick Off

ampaigning on her promises to stimulate the growth of local business and hiring, increase the availability of affordable housing, and advancing the needs of local schools, Autumn Burke officially kick started her campaign to represent residents of the 62nd State Assembly District. Burke officially opened her campaign office April 26 to a host of progressive community leaders. Following the festivities, campaign volunteers spent the afternoon going door-to-door and calling voters, most of whom were excited to hear about Autumn’s years of service and vision for the 62nd District. araben free lotions and creams are important because our skin absorbs everything we put on it. Much like food, the products we apply on our skin enter our body, and our bloodstream. Unfortunately, today many skin and hair products contain dangerous ingredients that can do both short and long term damage to our health. One of these are parabens. They are a group of chemicals very commonly found in products we use daily. Our moisturizers, shaving gels, creams, sprays, tanning solutions and even toothpaste may contain them. They are added to our cosmetics as preservatives, and are widely used because they are a cheap and effective way of giving a long shelf life to personal hygiene products. The common ingredients have been around for a long time, and paraben free lotions and creams were not heard of until recent years. Studies have discovered dangers of these chemicals: Allergic reactions have appeared on the skin of people using these preservatives. Sometimes reactions are present right away, but many times they develop over time. It is shocking to find that even some products labeled to be suited for sensitive skin contain chemicals from this group. Paraben-free face care is essential for anyone with sensitive skin. Even more serious dangers of parabens are that they interfere with the hormone balance of our body. Even in diluted amounts, these chemicals interfere with the

Today Baby Boomer Business Owners: When to Sell, When to Hold!

early every business owner has heard that timing is important when selling a business. It is well documented that the timing of external factors - like changes in the economy, availability of funding, and the rise and fall of interest and tax rates - can have a profound effect on the value and salability of a business. Private business owners will be among the ranks of retiring Baby Boomers. In the 1960s and 70s, many Baby Boomers started their own businesses. As a result of the aging business owner population, roughly 40% of the family-owned businesses in the United States are expected to experience a leadership change in the next five years Many studies point to the fact that many of these owners hope to sell their businesses on the open market in hopes of funding their retirement and enjoying the benefits of a lifetime of hard work. Baby Boomer business owners may find that selling their company at the right time could be a means to obtain the funds they need to maintain a comfortable lifestyle during their retirement years. Their need to liquefy assets could be underscored by the fact that Baby Boomers are considered a generation of poor savers. Research magazine reports that the majority of Baby Boomers will not have sufficient funds to retire when they hit the traditional retirement age of 65. With their retirement resources often riding on a business sale,

Baby Boomer business owners are encouraged to explore the factors that may signal the best time to sell their company. An uncertain economy, low interest rates, and favorable capital gains tax rates have prompted many business owners to cash out. Considerations when Deciding to Sell The decision to sell can be a difficult and emotional turning point for the business owner, and the motivation for selling is often complicated and subjective. Reasons include retirement, health issues, desire for liquidity, partnership disputes, diminished interest, lack of operating growth capital, and lack of suitable heirs, among others. Regardless of the reason, the decision to sell a business involves extensive planning and preparation in order to negotiate and execute a sale on the most advantageous terms. An owner with a sound strategy for selling his or her business is often better able to realize an attractive value for the company than someone who enters the process unprepared. The sale process typically includes financial appraisal and assessment of value, marketing the business, locating a prospective buyer, structuring the transaction, managing the buyer due diligence, negotiating and closing the transaction and post-close transaction. Despite the importance of having in place a clear-cut plan when deciding

to sell, according to a recent survey of small business owners by M&A Today, 65% do not know what their company is worth and 85% have no exit strategy. Worse yet, many business owners fix a price in their mind and may directly or indirectly communicate that price to potential buyers and competitors. Common Mistakes Made by Sellers The typical business owner sells one business in his or her lifetime. On the contrary, corporate buyers often acquire multiple businesses each year, and financial buyers can be even more active. Invariably, inexperienced sellers can make mistakes that buyers can capitalize on. Some of the most common mistakes include the following: Not knowing the value of the business. Private Business owners minimize profits to reduce taxes. Thus, their company’s financial statements often do not reflect the true profits and value of the business. As a result, many companies sold by their owners may be sold below market value. Using a multiple or ratio to set price. There is no single multiple or ratio that applies to all privately held businesses and much depends on the industry type. Each business is unique and requires a comprehensive review and analysis of the company, as well as a strong understanding of the dynamics of the M&A marketplace, in order to determine potential market value.

Selling at the wrong time. Many sellers wait too long to sell, not understanding that one should sell when the market is ready. Conversely many business owners spend a lifetime building their businesses, only to sell hastily, failing to recoup the actual worth of the company. Trying to rush the sale. Once an owner has decided to sell, she or he understandably wants the process to be over quickly. But preparation and selling a business—including finding the best buyer—takes an average of 12 months, though each transaction is unique and timeframes can vary widely. Negotiating with only one buyer. Although business owners may feel more in control when dealing with a single suitor, generating interest from multiple buyers can significantly increase the probability of selling the business at or close to the asking price. Not understanding the buyer’s motives. Rather than emphasizing the business’ growth potential, sellers often dwell on the past performance. Buyers, however, are looking for future revenue projections, return on investment, growth potential, and synergy. Inadequate documentation. Buyers expect documentation in the form of 3-5 years financials as well as documented procedures, policies and systems, including recast financial statements and five-year pro formas, backed by solid research and analysis that shows the poten(Continued on page 9)

Crenshaw Boulevard Construction to Begin This Weekend

T

he Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) will host a live chat on Tuesday, April 29, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. to discuss upcoming construction on the Crenshaw/ LAX light rail line. Construction on the long anticipated rail line is set to begin at 10 p.m., Friday, May 2, through Saturday, May 3, on Crenshaw Boulevard between Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Stocker Street. These streets will be closed to implement traffic re-striping and the placement of concrete barriers to separate the work area from the road. Two lanes of traffic in each direction will be open on Crenshaw Boulevard between MLK Boulevard and Stocker Street, during the majority of construction. For the first two months, left turn lanes on Crenshaw Boulevard between MLK Boulevard and Stocker Street will be prohibited. These left turn lanes will be restored after two months. An additional street closure is scheduled for Friday, May 16, on

Crenshaw Boulevard between Exposition Boulevard and Rodeo Place. The 8.5-mile Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project is a $2.058 billion light rail that will connect Metro’s Expo and Green Lines with eight new stations. When the Crenshaw/ LAX line opens to the public in 2019, passengers and customers will be able to travel to work, medical care, entertainment, shopping, school and other activities all over the entire Los Angeles region. The Sheriff Candidates Forum is a civic engagement event that will provide an opportunity for attendees to meet and discuss their most pressing concerns and important policy issues with candidates of the upcoming June 3 primary election. The evening will include a meet and greet session from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and a formal question and answer period from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Seven candidates have been invited; three have confirmed to date: Lou Vince, Todd Rogers and James Hellmond. The candidates will answer queries from the public, as well as have an opportunity to share their vision and priorities for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Lakers Coach Mike D’Antoni Resigns

os Angeles Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni resigned Wednesday after less than two seasons on the job. Team spokesman John Black confirmed D’Antoni’s resignation, ending the brief tenure of the Lakers’ fourth head coach in less than three years. D’Antoni went 6787 after taking over the Lakers early in the 2012-13 season. He replaced the fired Mike Brown, who lasted just 71 games after replacing 11-time NBA champion coach Phil Jackson. The injury-plagued Lakers were 27-55 this season, their worst campaign in more than 50 years. With Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Pau Gasol missing large chunks of the season, Los Angeles missed the playoffs for only the third time in 38 years. “Given the circumstances, I don’t know that anybody could have done a better job than Mike
