Hyde Park Neighbors Stunned Over Jace Murder

N

eighbors of actor Michael Jace were shocked to learned that he killed his wife, April Monday night after a domestic dispute. They say, until the shooting, they never saw or heard the couple argue. The Jaces were married for 10 years. According to reports, Jace, best known for his role of Los Angeles Police Officer Julien Lowe in the crime drama, “The Shield” from 2002 to 2008, shot his spouse multiple times in the upper torso before calling 911 and confessing to the crime. Police arrived at the Jace’s home, in the 5400 block of Brynhurst Avenue,

shortly after 8:30pm. The pink stucco home is located in the Hyde Park area of Los Angeles, which borders the east end of Inglewood. Specifics of the shooting are not known, however, Jace told police an argument erupted over money. According to neighbors, the Jace family was considered the ‘Huxtables’ of the block. Laughter was frequently heard from the home. However, one neighbor reported hearing the couple argue the night before. April was seen leaving the Jace in “The Shield” home with bags and

her two young sons. Both boys, under 10, were home at the time of the shooting, and allegedly witnessed the murder of their mother. According to police, Jace does not have a criminal record, but court documents revealed he allegedly has a violent temper. Divorce papers, filed by his ex-wife, Jennifer Bitterman, in 1997, stated that Jace choked her and slammed her against a wall in the presence of their 6-month-old son. He also threatened to kill her if she did not cooperate with regard to child visitation, according to her statement. April Jace, a Hawthorne High School graduate,

worked in the financial aid department at Biola University, a Christian college in La Mirada. She previously worked as a teacher in the Los Angeles school district. She had just returned home from picking up the couple’s sons from baseball practice, and had been home just 15 minutes before the shooting. Jace has been in financial trouble for years. He filed for bankruptcy in 2011, and is allegedly more than $500,000 in debt. His home is in foreclosure and he owes more than $20,000 in state taxes. hile Autumn Burke and Gloria Gray go full throttle during the final weeks of campaigning in the 62nd Assembly District, another face is being seen, but not heard. It’s a common theme. An opportunist finds an opening to run for office, moves into the district just in time to qualify for the seat, throws a ton of money into the race and thinks they’ve got it made. Political observers like Basil Kimbrew, Publication Chair of California

Simona Farrise Friends of the African American Caucus, smells something fishy. He noted that candidate Simona Farrise bought a $1.3 million Westchester home in December. “The so-called ‘Democrat’ has spent over $200,000 in her effort to pocket our assembly seat. But financing elections isn’t a new thing for Simona Farrise. She’s helped bankroll the last two campaigns for uber-conservative Republican South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham,” Kimbrew writes (Continued on page 2)

I Killed How (and I’d Do It Again!) By Veronica Mackey

oday I killed How. He had to go! How has been showing up in my life as long as I can remember. Always pestering me. I don’t know why, after all these years, I decided to kill him. But I did. Yep, he’s dead. I killed him, and I’ll gladly do it again. I had to do it. He was messing up my hopes and dashing my dreams. Always interfering and sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong. For every aspiration I’ve ever had, there he was, poking fun at me. I wanted to be lose weight...but How? Get out of debt...but How? Find love...but How? Become a millionaire...but How? I’ve had hundreds of goals and wishes...but I always seemed to get stuck in the How of it. How kills momentum. You’re going along fine, visioning the life you want. Then suddenly How shows up to stop you dead in your tracks. Hope and enthusiasm turn into fear and uncertainty. How is tricky. He’ll try and make you believe you need his permission before you can move on; your aspirations are not valid unless he shows you what to do. He’s so arro-

gant, but also smart. He knows we humans have a hard time not knowing. We want to know everything. Most of us want things all lined up and laid out before we’ll take any action at all. That’s where How gets his greatest joy--taking advantage of us not knowing... I am happy to report, I have joined the ranks of action takers who no longer need How’s permission. You might be saying, “But I need a plan.” I need to know How. And I am here to tell you that you don’t. At least not in the beginning. What you must do immediately is get going. You already know enough about what you want to understand the basic steps you need to take. You at least know that it will involve some sort of action, some form of communication--research, phone calls, emails, visits, etc. That’s enough to get you started. When you’re clear on the what, the how will show up. He will resurrect to show you the way, instead of browbeat you for answers that you may not yet have. The truth is everyone who has achieved greatness in life—whether it was building a multi-million dollar company or raising great kids— did not know exactly how they were

going to do it. They just knew they would do it. The simple advice of putting one foot in front of the other is still valid today. Just get up and go. How has kept more people up at night than the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” But you can slay this dragon in one simple step: RUN! Run quickly, while you can. Before you talk yourself out of that thing you say you want. Before you catch a bad case of “analysis paralysis.” There are times when you will have to go on pure faith, without any road maps, with nothing more than the will and desire to succeed. Your commitment to the desired outcome will have to override your head knowledge. The 10 lepers in the Bible (Luke 17:11-18) were healed on their way to see the priest, not before they left. They went because Jesus said “go,” not because they knew what to do. So, get moving today, and watch the magic happen that can only manifest when you take action. Forget about How. And if he shows up and tries to torment you, just remember, I’ve killed him. He’s just the ghost of your old, stuck past. You’re welcome and have a great day.

5 Ways to Teach Your Kid Entrepreneurism (Continued from page 1) “We set out to author our own book to teach children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old the same principles we had been teaching adults for years—he book we wished we had as kids. Kidpreneurs was born—a book that stokes a child’s desire to get involved in business early by fueling their curiosity in simple, engaging, creative and safe ways. Our goal with Kidpreneurs was to outline some basic tools and strategies kids can use to gain some valuable experience in starting, managing and growing a successful business venture.” Below are 5 tips that will sow seeds of self-reliance and discipline into your child’s future. 1. Allow Kids to Brainstorm. Some of the greatest products came from wild ideas. So, don’t put your parental limitations on your kids, let them dream big, then move to step 2. 2. Coach Them on Goal Setting. So, they have big dreams and ideas. Show them how to formalize those goals with paper and pencil, or typed out on a tablet. Focused goal setting teaches accountability. 3. Support Their Success, but More Importantly, Redirect Their Failures into Seeing New Opportunities. Entrepreneurs think differently. Coach them when they have set-backs to always bring a set of

optimistic eyes to the issue to find a new opportunity. 4. Introduce Them to the Business Plan. Starting your “Kidpreneur” to write their first business plan may sound extreme. However, a simple outline will help them learn structure. 5. Invest in Them. Support your kid’s start-up dreams by investing in them. But don’t just give them money, assign a dollar amount for extra jobs they can do around the house, go over the parameters just like a client, and at the end review their service. Start them off early in the business process. A recent study showed that the 2013 unemployment rate for recent college grads who are black was almost twice that of recent college grads overall, according to report released Tuesday by the Center for Economic and Policy Research. What does this mean? This means that instead of marching, and calling for policy change in the name of equity, our community needs to begin learning the skills needed to be CREATORS of jobs, as opposed to seekers of employment. And, as a community, we need to work diligently to ensure that the entrepreneurs in our community get the support they need to create the jobs that are most effective and beneficial to our community. It starts with the children.

Who Is Simona Farrise? (Continued from page 1) in his newsletter. Farrise is a Santa Barbara attorney who has contributed to the campaigns of both Barack Obama and Graham. So here we have a woman, supporting both a president who fights to keep unemployment benefits coming, and a senator voting to taking them away. It’s a conflicting use of money, to say the least. Not only that. Graham also voted to stop affirmative action for college admissions and keep taxes low for the ultra rich. Just who is Simona Farrise and what does she want? The Wave’s Betty Pleasant reports: “A cursory check into her background revealed that Farrise has absolutely no ties to the community. She left her home in Santa Barbara and moved into the 62nd District on Dec. 20, 2013. She registered to vote in the district in February of this year and now she wants to represent the district— about which she knows nothing— in the state Assembly.” Farrise’s website calls her an “advocate for working families, the disadvantaged, children, seniors, veterans, the LGBT community, the rights of free speech, and for equal justice for all,” and “The daughter of a Teamster and a transit worker…” (Continued on page 10)

Inglewood Family Files Lawsuit Over Death of Animo Student

T

he family of an Inglewood teen, killed in a fiery bus crash, filed a lawsuit this week against companies that operated the vehicles involved. Ismael Jimenez, a senior at Animo Charter High School was one of ten people who died when a tour bus collided with a FedEx truck. He was among dozens of students from Southern California, traveling in a charter bus to Humboldt State University for a campus tour on April 10. The tour bus carrying the students is operated by Silverado Stages. It was being driven northbound on the Golden State (5) Freeway when it was struck head on by a southbound FedEx truck that veered off the freeway, across a wide median and into oncoming traffic. Jimenez was hailed as a hero who lost his own life saving others. According to another Animo student, Jimenez broke a window in the burning bus and began lifting other students out. At least one other family has

cleaning hardscapes with water, turn off decorative fountains, take our cars to car washes that recycle water, and limit our outdoor watering to two times per week. He has also rejected any Homeowners Association (HOA) landscaping guidelines that do not allow for outdoor water conservation. As we enter into the summer months, it is extremely important for everyone to continue to find ways to reduce their water use. With little or no Northern California water, Southern California will be relying almost entirely on our supply from the Colorado River water and from water in storage. By conserving as much as possible this summer, we can extend the amount of water we have available in storage and give ourselves the best chance of beating this drought. How to Serve a Veteran for Serving You

W

Write a letter Many organizations, including California-based Operation Gratitude, sponsor letter writing campaigns for veterans. It’s a great way to express your gratitude to a veteran. To send a letter, contact Thank A Veteran, c/o Penny Alfonso, 1970 Rangeview Drive, Glendale, CA 91201. This is for letters only—no care packages—and should not include references to politics, religion, death or killing. Volunteer at a VA hospital Eye-to-eye contact and human touch is the best way to let veterans know that you care. Whether you donate a couple hours a week or decide to spend your Memorial Day visiting hospitalized vets, it is an experience that will positively impact your life as well as theirs. You can sign up on the Veterans Administration website (http:// www.volunteer.va.gov).

Donate personal items Many veterans are unable to buy some of the items that we take for granted. Donations of books or magazines, personal hygiene items, or gift cards for food or coffee can make a huge difference. Check with your local veteran’s organization to find where the items may be donated. Of course, cash is always welcome. Help the homeless When you give your time, resources or money to help the homeless, you are automatically helping veterans. According to the VA, a little more than a fifth of the adult homeless population has served their country. The VA has founded a National Call Center for Veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, that provides free, 24/7 access to trained counselors. Call 1-8774AID VET (1-877-424-3838). Memorial Day, like the holidays honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Cesar Chavez, should be a day of service—a day to repay veterans for their service to us. As you heat up the grill or head for the beach, be mindful of our military service men and women. Say “thank you” whenever you meet one, and commit to serving them in some way. It’s the very least we can do.

ith negative publicity being focused now on V.A. hospitals across the country, the tendency is to join in the outrage, This is a natural human tendency, and someone has to stand up for the men and women who have sacrificed so much for this country. They deserve a whole lot better than what they have received. Making your voice known on behalf of military families is a noble act which is much needed. Just make sure that your efforts do not end with talking. Most of us want to help, but we don’t know exactly what to do. As you are enjoy Memorial Day this weekend, you can go beyond mental and emotional support, and add some “legs” to your words. Mental depression, Post Traumatic Syndrome and other forms of mental illness are common conditions from the battlefield, which often follows veterans when they return home. Beside the physical needs for medical care, jobs, housing and money, there is a huge need for mental and emotional support. Feeling unappreciated, that they don’t belong in society, only contributes to their sadness and depression.

School Board and Elected Officials Attend “Peek and Teeth” Party Event Previews New Dental Clinic in Lennox “One way we give legs to our commitment to health of communities is by offering low cost dental services to the communities we serve, understanding that good oral health is key to overall wellness of an individual.”

T

o Help Everyone Health and Wellness Centers (T.H.E.), which provides health care to individuals and families in Los Angeles regardless of their ability to pay, along with the school district of the City of Lennox, hosted a “Peek and Teeth Party” recently to preview its new dental offices located on the campus of Lennox School District, located at 10223 Firmona Avenue in Lennox. Local elected officials from the office of LA County District 2 Supervisor Mark Ridley and Assemblymember Steven Bradford of the 62nd District, Lennox School Dis-

trict Superintendent, Kent Taylor and Lennox School Board Members and principals shared remarks and toured the facilities, set to open by the summer of 2014. “T.H.E.’s mission is to bring affordable, high quality and culturally sensitive health care to individuals and families in Los Angeles, regardless of their ability to pay,” shared T.H.E. President and CEO Risë K. Phillips, as she welcomed and addressed the group. “One way we give legs to our commitment to the health of our communities is by offering low cost dental services, understanding that good oral health is key to overall wellness of an individual.” T.H.E. Lennox Dental will provide full mouth x-rays, check-ups, cleanings, fillings, extractions, fluoride treatment, and oral health education to patients. They will receive care from a licensed and experienced dentist as well as a dental hygienist. In the first year alone, they anticipate seeing 1200 adults and 4800 children, with the hope of expanding the reach of these services as they grow in Lennox, a 1.1 square-mile community near Inglewood in great need of resources and support.

The dental offices were made possible by an ongoing partnership between T.H.E. and Lennox School District, along with the support of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration. T.H.E. and the Lennox School District began their partnership in 2011 with the opening of a full-service primary care health and wellness center on the district’s main campus, where students, their families and community members receive health care services. The wellness center will soon be opening up a second primary care facility in Lennox later this year.

T.H.E. Health and Wellness Centers provide primary care services across four sites located in Los Angeles. Services they offer include annual physical exams, family planning, pediatric care, cancer screening, chronic disease screening and treatment, HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections screening and treatment, prostate exams, vaccinations, dental health services, nutrition health education and mental health services. These services are available to the community, regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. For more information on T.H.E., visit www.tohelpeveryone.org.

Tips for Finding a Good Long-Term Care Facility

hat is an ideal long-term care facility? Various answers cropped up from the aged who, after all, make up a big percentage of the recipients of caring services in the USA, and elsewhere for that matter. Most men and women in their retirement years still prefer to be cared for by their children right in the comforts of their homes. However true, there are some individuals accustomed to their independence and would rather be under the care of nursing institutions or retirement communities. Living with your children and opting for the services of a nursing home or an assisted living facility has its advantages, but you shouldn’t discount the fact that each also has its downside. For instance, home care will ensure you’re well taken care of because your kids or other relatives will be present 24/7 to assist you in all areas of activities of daily living (ADL),such as eating, bathing, using the toilet, dressing up, and performing house chores. Unfortunately, you cannot count on them to administer medications, especially if you have a serious health condition because they are not trained professionally in the medical or nursing field. Those who can afford to pay a professional would prefer home health

care and, thus, hire a licensed nurse or medical practitioner to look after them, and attend to their medical needs. However helpful this is to a patient, studies done on long term care show that the government will not shoulder the expenses of caring services performed in one’s home unless the reason behind it is medical. Meanwhile, patients with low to no income are an exception in the eyes of the government. So even if the reason for their home care is nonmedical, the government will definitely consider paying the home care services that were provided to them. Cost of Long-Term Care Your budget for long-term care will depend on your choice or type of long-term care facility. If you opt for home care or home health care, you will not spend as much as you would in a nursing home or assisted living facilities. Besides your budget, however, your health condition is also an important factor to consider when choosing a caring facility. At home, your medical equipment is probably limited to the basics. such as a sphygmomanometer, thermometer, weighing scale, and perhaps a nebulizer. Unfortunately, these are not enough to address very serious conditions like heart diseases, cancer, respiratory problems, and many (Continued on page 12)

8 Things Low Income Parents Do That Cause Their Babies to Become Obese

A

recent study by the Journal of the American Association of Pediatrics examined infant care practices (2 months old) among low-income parents and found some interesting results. The study involved nearly 900 low-income parents who participated in the study at four different health centers. What the parents were doing is believed to be increasing the possibility of their children being overweight.

What low income parents are doing wrong Many behaviors among this low-income group, of which about 86 percent are receiving Medicaid benefits, were found to be clearly among practices that lead to obesity. For example: 1. Ninety percent of the infants were in homes exposed to television for 346 minutes a day. 2. Fifty percent of the infants were actively watching television with their parents. 3. Twice as many babies were given formula instead of breast milk. 4. Forty-three percent of parents put their babies to bed with bottles. 5. Twenty-three percent propped the bottles up in the baby’s bed, a practice that can lead to overfeeding. 6. Twenty percent said they fed their babies whenever they cried. 7. Thirty-eight percent tried to get their babies to finish their milk.

8. Sixty-six percent did not put babies on their tummies to encourage exercise. It all leads to overfeeding their babies The problem with these practices is that they can all lead to overfeeding babies. Formula, for example, flows more freely from the bottle than breast milk does from the breast, so baby eats more. Tummy time for babies, often missing in low-income

families, is when the baby is encouraged to lay on his or her stomach. It is a form of exercise when the baby can lift their heads to strengthen their necks and upper backs. Other practices are simply encouraging babies to eat more than they need. Is race a factor? The study showed some differences in parental behavior by race. For example, African American parents were far more likely to put their babies to bed with a bottle or prop the bottle. They also spent more time watching television. Hispanic parents were more likely to try to get their babies to finish their milk. But most all of the low-income parents in the study showed similar infant care behavior. According to the Journal of the American Association of Pediatrics who authored the study, behaviors thought to relate to later obesity were highly prevalent among the low-income parents included in this study. Today Build Your Fortune on YouTube (Part 2) By Rosalind Zavasky

the attitude that your video absolutely requires someone else’s content to be good—this isn’t the case. Choose a decent name for your account. The name is permanent. If you’re looking to make a name for yourself, name your channel after the name you’re trying to build your “brand” around. You want your channel to have a name that is short and memorable. People have a tendency to forget long channel names. The fact that a name is open does not mean it’s a good name for your channel. Try to keep in mind the same rules of thumb you use for selecting domain names. People need to be made aware of your videos so they will click through and watch them. One of the keys to making money on YouTube is becoming a YouTube partner and you can’t do that until you are regularly uploading videos that are seen by thousands of people. This implies that people have to be made aware of your activities. There’s no problem with a little selfpromotion when you are just starting out. All your social media profiles, status updates and activities should include a link to your videos. Also insert links in your forum posts and on your blog. You have to be patient. People will give up, or at least become frustrated, when the fruits of their labor are not immediately realized. It is important that you work with consistency. Don’t give in to the temptation to give up. There is no way around spending the time necessary to do anything on the Internet. You

rite great video descriptions. Don’t leave out any important details about your video. Be honest, but also make your video sound as interesting as possible. You may want to begin your description with any important links, such as to your sales page or blog. Your video description is how you help people to better understand what you are saying in your videos. This is also an area you can make good use of by telling people about yourself and your projects. You shouldn’t make the description so long that it’s tedious, but make sure you include every significant feature of your video. You might be tempted to come up with creative ways of using someone else’s material in your videos. You are better off finding another way to make your video entertaining. You don’t have the right to use a song by a famous band. Making a slide show from someone else’s article doesn’t make it your own unique content. If you want to call your video original, you can’t simply steal the script from another video and change a few things here and there. Yes, doing these things can save you time but they won’t earn you any money. If you really want to use someone else’s content, you should go about it the proper way and ask permission to use it. But never have

A

were patient with other areas of your business; this is no different. As you work and upload you’ll attract more viewers. Frequently, subscribers will be the results of having more viewers. They will share your videos. And eventually you’ll have lots of opportunities for revenue headed your way. Keep in mind that not everyone likes to watch videos, and some people are hard of hearing. This means taking the time to create and upload a transcript of your video to YouTube when you upload the video itself. YouTube has a built in system for transcribing videos but it is not even close to being accurate. This is something you should do yourself to ensure the quality of your videos; it’s best to know how to edit them as well. When you don’t do any editing of your videos, there will inevitably be mistakes and sloppy elements that won’t make a good impression. You don’t have to be technically proficient to edit videos these days, as there’s plenty of easy to use software around. With a little practice, you’ll learn how to do a good job at editing. It’s not necessary to go out and buy costly programs or cameras when you’re in the learning stages, but even simple editing techniques will help a great deal. If you want your videos to be profitable, it definitely helps to make them flow as smoothly as possible and remove any obvious mistakes. It isn’t the most expensive equipment that always turns out to be the best equipment. Even the camera on your

smartphone is capable of recording excellent videos. Don’t allow yourself to be sucked into putting off your YouTube channel because you’re afraid you won’t have the money. The content of your videos matters more than the equipment you use to make them. As long as the video is clear and edited well, no one really cares about the camera. When YouTube offers you revenue sharing for your videos, make sure you take advantage of it. The proposal might only be for a single video that has had a lot of views. On the other hand, there’s a good chance they’ll make an offer that includes your whole account. As soon as the offer is made, though, make sure you take it. The idea behind the revenue sharing program is that YouTube will feature ads on your videos and you will both share in the earnings. It’s a great monetization option for your videos and also the perfect way to start making some money. In conclusion, sharing content on the Internet has never been easier than with YouTube. A lot of people will see you when you do this. Instead of just reading your material, they will be able to put a face to thecloser to online success than ever before. It is important that you do not give up! As long as you put in the time, you can earn a great living with YouTube. No matter what you’re trying to accomplish with your videos, you can certainly find ways to make them more effective and powerful. (Continued on page 9)

Earthquakes, Disaster Preparedness and CERT (Part 4) CERT Training

By Anne Cheek La Rose

n the previous parts of this series, we have seen how to make quake kits to feed and shelter our families and prepare our homes and possessions to ride out an earthquake. We have learned why all Inglewood residents should take these steps. Now, we will explore the last piece of the Quake Preparation Puzzle – CERT. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training is a course, led by LA County firemen, to teach residents how to be prepared for earthquakes, disasters, and terrorism. A CERT class is an extremely important tool in your arsenal for preparation. Best of all, the class is free and costs only your time. This in-depth course will train you to deal with the aftermath of quakes and disasters. It is designed to teach residents to work together on their block to help themselves and their families, then to help one another. The foremost dictate of CERT is personal safety. Without taking care of yourself first and continuing to keep yourself safe,

likelihood fire and police will be busy with fires, major injuries, and quite possibly will be unable to get to us because of blocked roadways. For these reasons, we need to prepare ourselves and our families to ‘shelter in place’—at home—for an extended period of time, maybe as long as 10 days to two weeks. Areas of training are: disaster preparedness, team organization, two sessions on assessing injuries and how to deal with them, light search and rescue—when to do it and when not to, how to deal with fires and the kinds of fires to stay Anne Cheek La Rose away from, and the kinds of terrorism residents are likely to encounter you cannot take care of others and (remember, we are close to LAX). keep them safe. and how they plan to implement the training when the time comes. Everyone’s approach is a bit different, but the end result is the same. CERT classes have been offered in Inglewood periodically for the past 10 years. Many residents have taken the training here, as well as at County facilities. It is hoped that every residential block will have multiple CERT trained residents— one or two residents can’t perform these duties alone—when the time comes, the job will be just too big. We are currently looking for those interested in taking the CERT training in Inglewood. One doesn’t have to be an Inglewood resident to take the training here. The City is creating a list of those interested in possibly taking a class. Once a class is enrolling, you will be notified. To place your name on the list, please call the District 2 Police Community Center at 310-3305337 and leave your name, phone number, and email address. You’ll be glad you did. We’re all in this together.

How to Ditch Your Cable Bill (Without Giving Up all the Good Stuff)

S

ince the FCC made analog transmission obsolete back in 2009, digital cable substitutes have been popping up everywhere, offering customers new ways to access digital television. Now, it has become a way of life. The move forced everyone to subscribe to cable or buy a box that was pretty much limited to network television in order to view anything at all. It also made some question whether they really needed cable or satellite TV. Rapid advancements in technology is creating a growing group of former cable TV subscribers who get their

By Veronica Mackey

content almost exclusively online. TV networks have gone where the money is, making more shows available on their websites. If you’re willing to wait about a day after the show airs in real time, most channels will put the five or so most recent episodes of currently airing TV shows on their websites or on Hulu for free. This option is, at best, limited. But with a subscription to Hulu Plus or Netflix (around $8 a month each), you can expand your viewing access… significantly. In fact, you can easily save $50 or more a month. Add YouTube to the

mix and you’ll have all sorts of videos to watch, already paid for with your Internet subscription, including full length episodes. The option that offers the most channels currently is to purchase a streaming device to link your computer to your television. Retailers are seeing a rise in video streaming, and say many customers have replaced their old cable boxes for good. A one-time purchase and quick installation is all that is needed to enjoy your favorite programs. For folks on a budget, or those who don’t watch a lot of TV, it’s a nobrainer.

How does online video streaming work? Making the switch from network and cable television may take some getting used to. The biggest difference to me is that streaming television is not as dynamic. With regular cable, television is always “on.” Content moves continually from one program to the next. It’s more passive. Streaming television acts more like a computer. It forces you to be more engaged (at least when choosing what to watch) because after a show is over, you have to use the remote to tell it what to do next.

But it’s a small price to pay for the savings you receive. And although, you won’t find everything through streaming video that you find on cable, you won’t find the same shows being repeated either (unless you decide to watch them again). Cut the cable cord Now that AT&T is buying Direct TV, and Comcast has acquired Time Warner, there will be fewer companies competing, and, advocates fear, fewer consumer choices. There are also fears that prices will go up again. Streaming device makers cannot compete with the monster line up of shows offered by the cable and satellite giants. But this technology is still in its infancy. There will be more choices.

Free Home Safety Checks Offered to Inglewood Seniors

N

early 20 million seniors, ages 65 and older, visit the emergency room each year with almost a third of the visits related to injuries—many of which are sustained in the place seniors are meant to feel the safest, their home. In fact, 65 percent of senior homes have at least one potential safety issue, according to adult children of seniors surveyed by Home Instead, Inc., franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care® network. However, almost half of all home accidents by seniors (48 percent) can be avoided according to a recent survey of emergency room doctors. These preventable home hazards, such as throw rugs or loose railings, can be particularly harmful, leading to falls and injuries that can impact seniors’ ability to live independently. However, the majority of seniors (85 percent) haven’t taken any steps to prepare their homes for their changing needs as they grow older. “The home should be the safest and most comfortable place for aging seniors,” says Eric Carr of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Culver City and Inglewood. “It is critical for families and seniors to invest the time in identifying the necessary home safety modifications to ensure it stays that way.” Senior home safety experts recommend that adult children of seniors take at least one day each year to perform a thorough safety check of their parents’ home. To help families accomplish this goal and help

seniors reduce the risk of injury in their own homes, the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Culver City and Inglewood is offering free home safety checks conducted by local senior care experts throughout June. The safety checks will be provided at no cost on a time-available basis. “An annual safety check can help seniors avoid dangers that could threaten their independence,” said Carr. “When we go into homes, we see a lot of red flags that are easily overlooked by those who are familiar with the home. Most of the time, these are relatively easy and affordable fixes—and they could be the difference between a trip to the emergency room and staying safe at home.” The most common issues found in seniors’ homes are tripping hazards, bathrooms without assistive equipment, such as grab bars on the shower or tub, and storage that’s too high or too low. A free home safety checklist, online safety assessment and recommendations for inexpensive modifications that could ensure the safety of older loved ones are also available at www.makinghomesaferforseniors.com. These free safety checks and support resources are part of Home Instead Inc.’s broader Making Home Safer for SeniorsSM program. To request a free home safety check or the home safety checklist, please call the local Home Instead Senior Care office at (310) 836-8475.
