Conditions at Inglewood Schools Prompt Immediate Response By Veronica Mackey
M
ayor James Butts has responded to an eye-opening investigation that revealed some Inglewood schools are operating under unsafe and unsanitary conditions. In a statement dated Nov. 11, 2014, the mayor said: “When I read the November 6, 2014 KPCC article, I contacted the newly reelected State Superintendent of Schools Tom Torlakson that same day and forwarded to him by email a copy of the article…I explained my concerns regarding the multitude of operational, fiscal and sanitation issues that must be addressed immediately.” The scathing article interviewed staff and volunteers at Inglewood High School, Monroe Middle School and Highland Elementary School. The investigation revealed the presence of: • Mice and rats • Water damage • Holes in the ceiling
• An unstable basketball backboard • Nonworking toilets • Unclean bathrooms • Damaged floors • Nonworking fire alarms • Incidents and threats of violence with no campus security In 2012, the Inglewood school district was taken over

Football in Inglewood By Anne Cheek La Rose
I
have no crystal ball so I know as much as you about the possibility of a major league team coming to Inglewood. What I do know is that we have our very own minor league football team—the Inglewood Blackhawks. If you like football, this is the team to watch! From June to November these guys go to work. They are big and fierce and know how to play football. The Blackhawks are part of the LaBelle League and are 6-time League Champs, 3-time National Champs, and 2-time USFA National Champs. This season they are unbeaten! Most of the season games are at home, giving fans a chance to attend. Unfortunately, there is no stadium in Inglewood for the Blackhawks to call home, but Jack-
Anne Cheek La Rose ie Robinson Stadium, just down La Brea at Rodeo Road in the Rancho Cienega Sports Complex, is their home field. Now for the stats on last Saturday’s game:
Conditions at Inglewood Schools Prompt Immediate Response (Continued from page 1) the Office of the State Superintendent of Schools “Unfortunately, 2 years later, and 15 months into the tenure of Dr. Brann, although some progress has been made, a report issued in August by the Fiscal Crisis and Management Team (FCMAT) documents a number of fiscal, operational, and managerial shortcomings, the majority of which are incompatible with a healthy learning environment and are unacceptable for our children,” Mayor Butts said. He continued: “Equally unacceptable, neither I nor the Council were briefed contemporaneously by the State Trustee regarding the breadth of the issues chronicled in the FCMAT report.” According to KPCC, notes were
written by independent consultants Brian Hawkins and Dean Bubar for a report issued in August by the FCMAT. Brann laid off close to 150 employees earlier this year to help cut the deficit. Those let go included mostly cleaning staff and all 23 campus security guards. Most Inglewood schools have been without security since this school year began. Last week, Brann announced to Inglewood Unified faculty and staff in a memo that the district “has selected 17 individuals to fill safety positions at our school sites as soon as possible,” according to KPCC. In addition to campus security, the new guards will provide other services, including CPR, truancy and drug prevention, and conflict resolution. Brann said the district expects to hire more school police in the near future. Major improvements to Inglewood
The Blackhawks (15-0) defeated the visiting Las Vegas Trojans 3424 to solidify themselves as the #1 team in the LCFL going into the playoffs. The win earned Inglewood a first round bye as they await the winners of this weekend’s games to find out their opponent, whom they will face on Saturday, November 22nd. The Blackhawks were led by quarterback Brandon Brooks who threw for 4 touchdowns on the day. To learn more about Inglewood’s own team, visit http://www.blackhawkfootball.com/. schools are planned to begin in 2015, including construction of a brand new Inglewood High School. The project is estimated to cost over $148 million. Butts said he told Torlakson, “the safety, health and sanitation issues must receive priority. He (Torlakson) committed to having maintenance crews at Inglewood High this past weekend and on into the week to remediate this situation immediately.” Brann has been criticized for his $300,000 personal security detail contract. In an interview last month with KPCC, Brann said “I don’t want to get hurt here. I don’t know enough about present-day Inglewood to know how good the chances are for that so I’m just erring on the side of safety.” He later apologized to Butts and the Inglewood City Council for his “insensitive” remarks. nglewood police are looking for 3 suspects following a fatal shooting during the early morning of November 8. According to reports, an unidentified man was killed outside of a Yoshinoya restaurant in the 10000 block of Hawthorne Boulevard. The identity of the victim has been withheld pending notification of next of kin. However, the victim was said to be in his 40s. The owner of a mobile phone store allowed CBS2 to view video of the incident, but did not provide it for broadcast. The shooting was caught on tape by the owner of a
nearby mobile phone store. CBS2 was allowed to view the video, but not use it for broadcast. The video showed three male suspects driving away from the scene. Investigators said the men bailed
out of the car around 117th Street and Lemoli Avenue. Officers in armored vehicles, with dogs, went door-to-door looking for the suspects but weren’t able to locate them. Citing an ongoing investigation, authorities aren’t releasing any details surrounding the shooting. The manhunt is continuing, and police consider the suspects armed and dangerous. Anyone with information about this crime can report it anonymously at the crime hotline: 888-41-CRIME.

Inglewood Police Receive Grant to Keep City Streets Safer
T
he Inglewood Police Department has been awarded a $245.000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for a year-long program of special enforcements and public awareness efforts to prevent traffic related deaths and injuries. The Inglewood Police Department will use the funding as part of the city’s ongoing commitment to keep our roadways safe and improve the quality of life through both enforcement and education. “Every DUI driver removed from the roadway is a potential life saved. With this grant money, it is our goal to create a safer environment for the residents of Inglewood and anyone traveling through our community,” said Inglewood Police Chief Mark Fronterotta. “We want to impress upon everyone—if you choose to drink, please don’t drive. For those who ignore this message, the Inglewood Police Department Traffic Unit will strictly enforce the law. The Inglewood Police Department is dedicated to keeping our roadways safe through enforcement and education.” After falling dramatically between 2006 and 2010, the number of per-
sons killed and injured in traffic collisions saw slight increases in 2011 and 2012. Particularly worrisome are recent increases in pedestrian and motorcycle fatalities and the dangers of distracting technologies. This grant funding will provide opportunities to combat these and other devastating problems such as drunk and drugged driving and speeding. “California’s roadways are still among the safest in the nation,” said OTS Director Rhonda Craft. “But to meet future mobility, safety, and sustainability objectives, we must create safer roadways for all users. The Inglewood Police Department will

n Oct. 16, 2014, Inglewood Today published a story entitled “Attacks on Butts Backfire.” The article stated that Joseph Teixeira accused Mayor James Butts of child molestation. While Mr. Teixeira did not explicitly accuse Mayor Butts of child molestation as first reported, he referred to and quoted from a 1993 L.A. Times article entitled “Santa Monica Chief Accused of Molestation” (Feb. 6, 1993). Teixeira made no mention of the fact that the matter was dropped shortly thereafter, as reported by the L.A. Times one week later in an article entitled “DA Drops Molestation Case Against Santa Monica Chief” (Feb. 13, 1993).

Willie Brown, Publisher, Inglewood Today Weekly time to stop the madness. Retailers who experimented with the Thanksgiving Day opening argued that it could alleviate some of the craziness of Black Friday. In recent years, there have been some unfortunate incidents of shoppers being injured—pushed or trampled by fellow customers. In this age of viral social media, negative publicity can be the death knell of a business—especially a big one. Almost 50,000 people have joined the Facebook group, “Boycott Black Thursday ” to demonstrate against any store that opens on Thanksgiving this year. To those companies who have not yet made the conscious choice to shut down on Thanksgiving, you still have two weeks to make up your mind. Please get this memo: “Thanksgiving is for watching football and being with family!” Consumers have a voice now thanks to the Internet, and they won’t be silenced. We hope you’re listening.

ou know you are living in a world of lower standards when retailers are being applauded for not forcing employees to work on a national holiday. Twenty years ago, the very thought would have been unthinkable. But that is exactly what is happening this Thanksgiving season. Stores like Costco, Nordstrom, and Best Buy have announced they will be closed the entire day on Thanksgiving, Nov. 27. Consumers interviewed about this year’s biggest shopping day said they will support stores that honor the holiday by giving their employees the day off. It may not be all about family, however. Best Buy said it’s closing on Turkey Day because there just isn’t enough profit to keep the doors open. Regardless, closing for Thanksgiving is great P.R. Retailers may actually save money and employees get to be with their families, so it’s a “win-win.” Until a few years ago, being open on Thanksgiving Day was only acceptable at restaurants, hospitals and your local 7-Eleven. But when the economy went south, things changed. Black Friday became Black Thursday. It fueled an advertising frenzy, filled with all sorts of hype to get shoppers to come out. The lure of unbelievable deals began pulling people away from the family table in pursuit of the hottest toys or wide screen TVs. This is why so many protest the commercialism of Christmas. It’s

Medicine Safety Reminders for Cold and Flu Season
mericans catch approximately 1 billion colds each year, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that as many as 20 percent of people in the U.S. will get the flu this cold and flu season. A majority of people (seven in 10) will use over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to treat their symptoms, and many of these medicines contain acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is the most common drug ingredient in America, found in more than 600 prescription (Rx) and OTC medicines, including pain relievers, fever reducers and many cough, cold and flu medicines. It’s safe and effective when used as directed, but taking more than the maximum daily dose of 4,000 milligrams is an overdose and can lead to liver damage. The Acetaminophen Awareness Coalition (AAC), a group of leading health, health care provider and consumer organizations, is reminding consumers to double-check their medicine labels to avoid doubling up on acetaminophen this winter. “Cold and flu season is a very important time to remind patients to be diligent about reading their medicine labels and knowing the ingredients in their medicines,” said Anne Nor-
man, APRN, DNP, FNP-BC, Associate Vice President of Education at the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, a founding organization of the AAC. “People may use a medicine to treat their cold or flu symptoms on top of a medicine they are already taking, not realizing that both might contain acetaminophen.” The AAC’s Know Your Dose campaign reminds consumers to follow four medicine safe-use steps: 1. Always read and follow the medicine label. 2. Know if medicines contain acetaminophen, which is listed on the front panel of packaging and in bold type or highlighted in the “active ingredients” section of OTC medicine labels, and sometimes listed as “APAP” or “acetam” on Rx labels. 3. Never take two medicines that contain acetaminophen at the same time. 4. Ask your health care provider or a pharmacist if you have questions about dosing instructions or medicines that contain acetaminophen. For additional information and a list of some common medicines that contain acetaminophen, visit KnowYourDose.org or follow @KnowYourDose on Twitter. Source: NewsUSA
Environmental Charter School Builds New Playground in Six Hours
A
ssemblyman Steven Bradford. Mayor James T. Butts, Jr. and Councilman Ralph Franklin joined nearly 300 volunteers Nov. 1 to build an entire community playground at Environmental Charter Middle School in Inglewood. The entire project was completed in less than six hours thanks to volunteers from The Smile Generation, Environmental Charter Schools and organizers from KaBOOM! — a national nonprofit dedicated to bringing active play into the lives of kids. Teams of workers assembled the playground—mixing and pouring thousands of pounds of concrete, and moving enough safety surfacing to cover nearly nine NBA-size basketball courts. The play space was actually designed in September by the students themselves, who were asked to draw their dream playground. Their creative young minds envisioned a play space which would eventually include gardening spaces, recycling and composting bins, shade structures, a revolving ring to hang from, and a rock-climbing wall. The design is a reflection of the school’s focus on experiential learning and use
of the environment. The Smile Generation donated dentistry to those who do not have access to dental care. “We are thrilled that we had a hand in helping the Environmental Charter Middle School build a play area and that we were able to serve Inglewood community members with the on-site dental clinic,” said Kyle Guerin, the “we serve” manager for the Smile Generation, a referral service for dentists. Until Saturday, Environmental Charter Middle School students didn’t have a playground, and were not able to fully develop their physical, social and cognitive skills. “It’s wonderful for our students to get a brand-new playground; but what is truly inspiring for our students is to see hundreds of adults, who have never met them, coming to spend their time building a playground so that students can have a safe, challenging, and fun play space —literally in their own backyard,” said Beth Bernstein-Yamashiro, principal of Environmental Charter Middle School - Inglewood. “These projects will positively impact our campus and community for years to come.”
Dr. Myles Munroe Has Fulfilled His Purpose (Continued from page 5) private Lear jet struck a construction crane as it attempted to land. The aircraft was flying low due to bad weather. The plane reportedly exploded, killing all nine passengers, including his wife, a pilot and members of his ministry team. There were reports that Munroe’s daughter Charisa was also aboard the plane. However, she is very much alive. In fact, she has posted two heartfelt messages on social media. On Facebook, she wrote: “With indescribable sorrow, I have cried for the last few hours, in the floor of my closet both crying and with hands lifted at the same time in worship. My papa is the greatest servant leader I have ever met… For every call, post and messages you’ve sent me this evening it has remarkably blessed and nourished my grieving heart.” (https://www. facebook.com/tyadams) She also penned this on Instagram: “My mom, Ruth Ann Munroe, was the epitome of grace. She was truly my queen. She was the essence of everything that God defined as a wife and mother. She stood alongside my dad, as the love of his life, sharing faithfully in ministry with him, raising their children and graciously serving him as her king.” (@ mylesmunroe) The Munroes also have a grown son, Chario (Myles Munroe, Jr). As the founder of Bahamas Faith Ministries International, “Dr. Myles” was a sought after speaker in both the Christian and business worlds. He was known for his powerful teachings on God-given purpose, which inspired people to live life to the fullest. I am one of them.
Dr. Myles was my mentor from afar. We never met, but I bought and read his books and watched him on television every chance I got. He was so wise, so brilliant, the kind of person who made you think every time he spoke. Last year, as I was about to publish, 30 Days in September: How to Master Life’s Tests, (www.facebook.com/ VeronicaMackeyAuthor), I heard Dr. Myles say something so profound to my book’s theme that I had to grab it. “Whatever you proclaim must be tested.” I quoted him on the back cover. Those unfamiliar with Munroe’s work cannot fully appreciate his prominence as a Christian leader without reading his work or hearing him speak. Here is a sample of some of his most powerful quotes, and why so many love him so much: 1. “If you don’t attempt things, you don’t attract God. ” 2. “You must decide if you are going to rob the world or bless it with the rich, valuable, potent, untapped resources locked away within you.” 3. “One of the greatest tragedies in life is to watch potential die untapped.” 4. “Success is not a comparison of what we have done with what others have done.” 5. “When the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable.” 6. “Being open to correction means making ourselves vulnerable, and many people are not willing to do that. ” 7. Success is making it to the end of your purpose. If you die before you fulfill your purpose, you were killed. Dr. Myles encouraged people to “die empty,” give all you have of yourself. Then you are ready to pass on. Dr. Myles lived what he preached. He fulfilled his purpose.

ith the passing of the Affordable Care Act, many insurance companies along with everyone living in the United States was thrown for a loop. Suddenly, having health insurance became law, and just like any other law, there would be consequences if Americans did not follow the rules. This created a storm of confusion as many Americans were unaware of what exactly this meant for them and their families. At the top of the endless list of questions consumers were asking was, “What changed?” For years it had been common knowledge that many health insurance companies were focusing more on their bottom line than the health of those paying their premiums. Countless cases involving denial of treatment and misconduct were reported and, until healthcare reform was passed by legislatures, they
weren’t expected to stop any time soon. So, what did change and how do Americans sign up? For starters, health insurance companies are now required to carry the explanations of their health plans in plain language. This is significant because it disallows the use of vague legal terminology that requires 2 years of law school to understand, giving Americans a fair shot at choosing a health coverage plan that is right for them and their families. Not only have health insurance companies been legally mandated to explain their policies on paper in plain language, but the array of coverage for new health plans since 2010 has been increased. Under the ACA, health insurance companies are required to provide everyone they cover with the “Essential Health Benefits”. Included in the “Essential (Continued on page 11)

Young Father Teaches Kids Organic Farming (Continued from page 1) father of two, husband, and brilliant community organizer, has taken his trash and created a potential business for his daughters. He walked me around to the side of his house and brought me to two Rubbermaid buckets, that I assumed were for storing laundry and possibly toys. In this case, Ryan has converted his storage buckets into compost bins. Compost is organic matter that has been decomposed and recycled as a fertilizing agent. Compost is a prime ingredient when farming organically. Ryan opened the bucket, and immediately I assumed that a horrendous smell would attack my nostrils the minute he cracked the lid. But to my surprise, the bucket had a faint odor, more of dirt than anything rotten. Ryan said, “I looked all around the area and found out that red worms like to eat paper, old newspaper, old fruit, and stuff like that, so when you put it all in there, it creates
your own natural fertilizer. You’ll get ants inside of it, flies, and so on and so forth, and that’s cool, because it’s sort of like, ‘Live and Let Live,’ and they all help each other out.” With every great initiative comes an opportunity to make it a profitable business. Ryan says, “The plan is to eventually get to the point where we can sell the red worms, or give them away in the community as a way for people to start making their own compost bins. Also, red worms go for about $10/lbs. and up to $20/lbs so, the whole idea behind this was to teach my daughters how to be self-sufficient. It also teaches them about business, because—let’s be honest—we live in a capitalistic society. It’s all about what you can supply. So, we have something here that’s grassroots, its sustainable, and it can be something my daughters can live off of.” The last stop on the tour was to Ryan’s home garden where he grows watermelons, strawberries, collard greens, bell peppers, squash, tomatoes, kale, and apples. Before
leaving him, he blessed me with a hefty home grown squash that I must say, looked like a squash right out of the local super market. I can’t say how important it is, as a community, to begin to start dealing with sustainability. Among African Americans have disproportionately higher rates of disease, so good nutrition and diet are the keys to a healthy body. They combat disease much easier than prescription medication does by keeping our bodies balanced, our minds clutter free, and our energy levels at an optimum level. There is no reason why, everyone in our community shouldn’t have a garden in their back yard and front yard, places where kids can come home from school, and on the walk home, jump up and snatch a piece of fresh fruit off the tree, or grab a home grown snack right from their backyards. It will place an emphasis back on eating clean, unprocessed foods, and also will save us thousands of dollars a year. Sustainability is exactly what it says it is. Large

I will periodically advise you as to the status of the State’s effort to stabilize and improve the IUSD.

‘Fabulous’ Forum to Receive Preservation Honor Award National Trust for Historic Preservation to Present Award at Its National Conference
T
he National Trust for Historic Preservation will present its Preservation Honor Award for the restoration of The Forum in Inglewood, CA. The project is one of 17 award winners to be honored by the National Trust during its 2014 Past Forward National Preservation Conference in Savannah, Ga. The Forum shows that post-World War II sports arenas can find new life. Designed by Charles Luckman, the stadium opened with great fanfare in 1967 as the home of both the Los Angeles Lakers and Kings. It immediately became a Southern California landmark. When the teams later relocated, the Forum was sold to a local church. Underutilized and in disrepair, the building was facing demolition until the Madison Square Garden Company purchased it in 2012. Committed to historic preservation, the company maintained the site’s original character while updating it for modern-day use as a concert venue. The rehabilitation also helped revitalize the surrounding community, bringing hundreds of new jobs and redevelopment to the area. “While each is unique, this year’s outstanding Honor Award winners all reflect the importance of protecting our nation’s cultural heritage,”
said Stephanie Meeks, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “Whether it’s the restoration of a center for African American studies in Savannah, or the preservation of the iconic Green Mountain Lookout in Washington state, this year’s Honor Award winners demonstrate how saving places is bolstering local economies and helping preserve the unique fabric of communities throughout the country.” The award will be presented to The Forum/The Madison Square Garden Company at the Richard H. Driehaus National Preservation Awards ceremony in Savannah, Ga. on November 13, 2014. Co-recipients are: Brisbin Brook Beynon, Architects; Clark Construction Group; Severud & Associates; and, Historic Resources Group.
The National Preservation Awards are bestowed on distinguished individuals, nonprofit organizations, public agencies and corporations whose skill and determination have given new meaning to their communities through preservation of our architectural and cultural heritage. These efforts include citizens’ attempts to save and maintain important landmarks; companies and craftsmen whose work restores the richness of the past; the vision of public officials who support preservation projects and legislation in their communities; and educators and journalists who help Americans understand the value of preservation. The winners of the National Preservation Awards will appear online at www.PreservationNation.org/awards.
Obama Picks Attorney General Nominee (Continued from page 1) genocide situation in Rwanda. She is a Harvard graduate, and has spent a large chunk of her professional career working in the offices of US attorneys and serving as one herself. She was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the Eastern District of New York in 1999 and she served there until 2001. Lynch then moved to private litigation and served as a member of the board for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where she prosecuted both Republican and Democratic representatives for fraud and other crimes, and hauled both Citibank and HSBC to court. President Barack Obama, called her back to the federal sector in 2010, where she has remained as US District Attorney for the Eastern District ever since. The president announced Lynch’s nomination on Nov. 8, but critics say he has moved too slowly. Some speculate he did not want to rock the boat by publicly choosing her before the election. The shift to a Republican-controlled Senate, which will take shape in January, is expected to give conservatives more momentum to block any of the president’s nominations. Despite Secretary of State John Kerry’s assessment that there are some nominees who’ve been waiting for Senate confirmations, and the highprofile nature of the position, hearings are not expected to move quickly. In fact, according to Care2.com, “Members of the conservative community are already out to smear her, and Breitbart (www.Breitbart.com) already made a pretty embarrassing misstep when he confused her with an attorney involved in the Whitewater scandal. Wrong Loretta Lynch, but nice try!”
Arrested Film Producer Makes Police Training Video
A
black television and film producer, wrongfully arrested in Beverly Hills on charges of bank robbery, is using his infamous celebrity to improve how police handle arrests. Charles Belk was in town for a pre-Emmy party on August 22 when Beverly Hills police arrested him. He was taken into custody following a robbery at a Citibank branch in the 8400 block of Wilshire Boulevard. Police said he was detained because he matched the description of a man suspected of being an accomplice in the heist. Belk said he was detained for 6 hours and not allowed to make a phone call. He also said officers failed to quickly review security video from the bank that clearly showed he was not involved. He
was finally released around midnight after officers watched the video. Police Chief David Snowden later apologized to Belk and said an internal investigation would be conducted. Belk’s record will be expunged. The+ ordeal has caused Belk to turn his misfortune into an opportunity for good. Mistaken identity is an all-too-common occurrence with men of color and a major component of racial profiling. The chief admitted the investigation “identified areas that could and should have been handled differently.” He said his officers will do a better job in the future
forcement agency. I also will make several personal appearances at the request of the city, including speaking to Beverly Hills Police Department personnel during roll call of all shifts to describe the perspectives of an innocent man who has been detained.” He also said he will work for legislative changes as well. “I’ve launched a new of reviewing videos and allowing nonprofit—Fitting the Descripinmates to make phone calls in a tion—which will help build awaretimely manner. ness of and assistance to those who Belk called the experience a are wrongfully detained or arrest“blessing in disguise” that he hopes ed,” Belk said. “So truly a blessing will lead to positive changes. “The in disguise. Duncan Family Reaches Settlement with Texas Health Presbyterian
T
he family of deceased Ebola victim Thomas Eric Duncan says they have reached a settlement with Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, where Duncan was initially misdiagnosed. Duncan was turned away by the hospital on Sept. 25 with a temperature over 103 degrees. He returned 3 days later when symptoms grew worse. He was admitted and treated, but died on Oct. 8. The family has been speaking out since Duncan’s death on, saying the hospital’s denial of care was due to incompetence and was racially motivated. One relative said Duncan could have lived if the medical staff had got the diagnosis right the first time. He said the Dallas-based hospital turned Duncan away because he was “a poor black man without health insurance.” The family wondered why he was not moved to Emory Hospital in Atlanta—where Kent Bradly and Nancy received life-saving treatments for Ebola. In an interview on Oct. 7, Rev.
Thomas Eric Duncan Jesse Jackson said Texas is one of the southern states that rejected the Affordable Care Act. “Texas has rejected $100 billion in Medicaid monies, which would create more affordable care for poor people,” he said. Attorney Les Weisbrod said Wednesday in Dallas that the foundation in honor of Thomas Eric Duncan will assist other Ebola victims in West Africa. Weisbrod said the foundation is part of a larger settlement that will “take care” of Duncan’s four children and his parents. Weisbrod did not say how much the settlement was worth.

Healthcare Is Your Right! (Continued from page 6) Health Benefits” are coverage for areas such as prescription medication, maternity and newborn care, and chronic disease management. Arguably the most beneficial change within the 2,700 pages of the ACA is the ability for anyone, regardless of their pre-existing conditions, to purchase a health plan through Covered California. Furthermore, the ACA makes it illegal for health insurance companies to charge a person more or refuse them coverage because of a pre-existing health condition. Community clinics are finding that provision has already began saving lives. One example of this is a patient we encountered at our clinic who was diagnosed with cancer. At the time, this patient was uninsured and could not find a health insurance company to buy coverage due to the cancer diagnosis. With the ACA in place, an UMMA Community Clinic Covered CA enrollment coordinator was able to qualify her for MediCal and get her the treatment
she needed-- the ACA saved her life. What’s more is that California has made signing up for health insurance as simple as picking a plan and starting payments or qualifying for free health coverage under MediCal. The signup process is fast and easy. Residents of California can go to www.CoveredCA.com and hit the “Apply” tab at the top of the page. From there, following the simple directions will help residents figure out whether they are entitled to MediCal and if not, which plan will best suit their needs. In an attempt to streamline this process even further, the government has offered grants to community clinics to fully fund Covered CA enrollment coordinator positions who can offer free assistance to community members—the Covered CA website even has a “Find Local Help” tab which can direct community members to the closest enrollment site to them. The next enrollment period opens November 15 and closes February 15, 2015. What are you waiting for? Healthcare is your right!
