hen Dwight Howard joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 2012, the team had high hopes for the center and power forward from Atlanta.

Howard has amassed several NBA and franchise records and awards during his NBA career. Few players can match his defensive record. He has led the league in rebounds per game five times and is the youngest player in NBA history to lead the league in rebounding and blocks.

Owners understand the climate is changing and not because of the overuse of fossil fuels. Studies show that 71% of young people say they would rather quit their jobs and work for themselves. About 60% of them all say they will do so within a year or so. Old companies ran with old philosophies are no longer attractive to the young workforce anymore.

Social Media The Internet has connected the world in a way that peace treaties and international alliances could never do. Young people have worlds of information at their fingertips faster, and more often than ever before in history and it’s only getting faster. They’re more informed, and they’re joining forces. The Internet has resulted in the creation of social communities like Meetup.com, where individuals meet online based on common interests, then meet in person to network and socialize.

About 98% of people ages 1834 use social media. That’s a lot of young people, communicating with a lot of young people, which translates into hundreds of millions of dollars of “new” revenue. Social Media is now an industry and it’s a young person’s industry. If we need refreshing, Mark Zuckerberg was the youngest billionaire in the world.

He single handedly transformed the perspectives of young people who saw someone who looked like them become the owner of a multinational empire, and he did it all his way. Just look at the headquarters of Facebook! Larry Page and Sergey Brin created Google in their 20’s when they incorporated Google in 1998.

What does this mean for Inglewood? As a city with a rich history and a desire to transform itself into a world-class destination, we have to begin opening our doors for young entrepreneurs and start-ups that think outside the box. Feds Consider Arming TSA Agents

hould TSA agents start carrying firearms? This is the question being weighed by airport officials and national security agencies in Washington DC after last week’s shooting at LAX. The shooting, which is the first in the history of the Transportation Security Administration since the agency was formed two months after 9/11, has caused security officials to reevaluate security measures. Pressure is being mounted by the union representing 45,000 federal security agents to create a class of armed TSA officers with law enforcement training and the authority to arrest people.

The TSA’s purpose is to screen passengers for possible flight safety threats and remove potentially dangerous items. They do not carry guns or make arrests.

TSA Administrator John Pistole said his agency would review its protocols after Friday’s attack.

U.S. Atty. Gen. Eric Holder promised “a review of the security measures that were in place not only at LAX but, I think, a review of the security arrangements that exist in other airports as well.”

U.S. Rep. Eye on the City Residents Rally Support for Subsidized Childcare

The harsh reality of budget cuts showed up at the council meeting Tuesday night. Residents are concerned that closures of day care centers are being considered.

“There are those of us who do not qualify for Head Start because we do not fall behind the poverty line, but we cannot afford private daycare.

Please reconsider closing the preschools,” a young mother said.

Long-time resident Carol Douglas said parents don’t know what to do if the facilities are closed: “It breaks my heart that this is an avenue that the City has to take and the kids have to suffer.”

Is Tea Time Over?

as the Tea Party’s dwindling support finally been made official? Tuesday’s election results indicate it could be the beginning of the end.

Terry McAuliffe, the former democratic national party chairman and fundraiser from Virginia, defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli 48 percent to 46 percent with 99 percent of the precincts reporting. In Alabama, Bradley Byrne defeated his Tea Party rival Dean Young in the Republican primary. Byrne drew 52 percent of the vote to Young’s 48 percent, with all precincts reporting, according to AP. Don’t expect Tea Partiers to go away, but they are hurting Republicans at least as much as they used to help them.

With 2014 midterm elections just around the corner, ultra conservative Republicans are waking up. They are realizing they better soften their grip and try to work across party lines, but is it too late? Since conservatives took over the House in 2010, and in the year leading up to that election, Tea Partiers have pretty much ran the Republicans. They have had Speaker of the House John Boehner caught between a rock and a hard place. Every decision he has been faced with from the debt ceiling to Obamacare had been worked from within the tight confines of Tea Party tactics.

No matter what the issue has been, the answer, when it comes to working with Democrats, is always no. No compromise, no regulations, no tax increases, no affordable health care. No nothing. Obstruction is the noose that has nearly strangled the life out of those few Republicans in Washington who actually want to move forward.

Pew Research Center for the People and the Press in Washington has been studying the rise and fall of the Tea Party for the past three years. Carroll J. Doherty, an associate director, said negative views for the Tea Party are at their highest since Pew’s research began.

“A lot of this backlash among moderate Republicans has to do with tactics, specifically related to the government shutdown and trying to tie health care to it,” Doherty said.

Their ‘my way or the highway’ attitude stands in the way of progress.

The fact that the Tea Party represents a vital base of conservative voters has left the mainstream Republican Party in a real pickle. The movement which mobilized strong opposition to healthcare reform and the economic stimulus is a vital part of the party’ core values. They are the worker bees that go out and make noise in the streets— the ones who get news outlets to show up.

How will Republicans hold on to their Congressional majority next year without the Tea Party?

The short answer is they won’t.

Much to the dismay of moderate Republicans, they need Tea Partiers. Too bad for their party, the division has come to a head at the same time voters have had enough of their craziness.

In an exit interview after Tuesday’s voting, a Republican voter in Virginia said he voted for the Democratic candidate because he cannot stomach anymore hardline Tea Party politics.

The disrespect shown by Tea Partiers toward President Obama and others goes beyond freedom of speech. It is, in my opinion, a sign of treason. But as ugly as it is, I hope they continue.

Let their decline hit a new low so Democrats can take back the house. Use the “tactic of nonresistance” and beat them at their own game. It’s working.

Three Myths about Mental Illness

I

n my practice, I have met many misconceptions about mental illness from patients and their relatives. I can’t blame them. Mental illness has not been understood for a while. In fact, it has created such a stigma, that people dismiss its importance and its impact in their lives. Some even hide their emotional difficulties from the scrutiny of their close friends and loved ones.

Failure to recognize and address the illness has staggering consequences. People have lost their families, their jobs, their sources of security and comfort, their present and future. Unfortunately, some even lose their lives.

In my office, I have several extra chairs intended for my patients’ relatives. With my patients’ consent, I educate their loved ones about the illness and treatment choices. Only through truthful understanding can mental illness be resolved and treated.

Mental illness should be seen in a different light, and has to be understood using a different lens. It has to be explored with compassion and humanity, with openness and tolerance. Here are a few sad, but true myths: Myth 1: “Bad nerves” is bad.

Having “bad nerves” is not necessarily bad. Neither is possessing it, in itself, bad. It has nothing to do with your past sins, failures, or mistakes. When you have mental illness, you have a medical disorder that happens in the brain. Like any medical condition—flu, high blood pressure, or asthma—it also has physical manifestations such as poor energy or appetite loss.

Mental illness can be compared to a stroke—both affect the brain and both have harmful outcomes to the afflicted individuals and their families.

Today How Will Health Care Reform Affect You and Your Taxes?

t’s massive, and it’s complicated. At more than 2,400 pages, the Affordable Care Act (ACA for short) has left businesses and individuals confused about what the law contains and how it affects them.

The aim of the law is to provide affordable, quality health care for all Americans. To reach that goal, the law requires large companies to provide health insurance for their employees starting in 2015, and uninsured individuals must get their own health insurance starting in 2014. Those who fail to do so face penalties.

Insurance companies must also deal with new requirements. For example, they cannot refuse coverage due to pre-existing conditions, preventive services must be covered with no out-of-pocket costs, young adults can stay on parents’ policies through age 26, and lifetime dollar limits on health benefits are not permitted.

The law mandates health insurance coverage, but not every business or individual will be affected by this requirement. Here’s an overview of who will be affected.

For Businesses: It’s All in the Numbers Fewer Than 50 Employees Companies with fewer than 50 employees are encouraged to provide insurance for their employees, but there are no penalties for failing to do so. A special marketplace will be available for businesses with 50 or fewer employees, allowing them to buy health insurance through the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP).

Fewer Than 25 Employees Small companies that pay at least 50% of the health insurance premiums for their employees may be eligible for a tax credit for as much as 35% of the cost of the premiums. To qualify, the business must employ fewer than 25 full-time people with average wages of less than $50,000. For 2014, the maximum credit increases to 50% of the premiums the company pays, though to qualify for the credit, the insurance must be purchased through SHOP.

50 or More Employees For companies with 50 or more full-time employees, the requirement to provide “affordable, minimum essential coverage” to employees has been delayed for one year and is not required until 2015. Originally, employers had been required to file information returns that reported details about the health insurance they provided, with penalties to apply if the insurance did not meet standards.

Companies complained that they needed more time to meet the reporting obligations, and in response the IRS made the reporting requirement optional for 2014. Without the reporting, the IRS could not determine penalties, so the penalties also were postponed for a year.

Bottom line: the IRS is encouraging companies to comply in 2014 even though there are no penalties for failure to do so.

There will be four types of insurance plans to choose from: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The more expensive the plan, the greater the portion of medical costs that will be covered. The price of each plan will depend on several factors including your age, whether you smoke, and where you live.

Many individuals will qualify for federal tax credits which will reduce the premiums they actually pay. Each state’s Marketplace will have a calculator to assist individuals in determining the amount, if any, of their federal tax credit.

Couple Arrested in Stolen Car

H

ow do you know what is your is really yours? NBC News reports that an Orange County couple learned their lesson the hard way. They were arrested after unknowingly purchasing a car that had been reported stolen from Inglewood.

Farrah Johnson and Tom Louscher bought an used 2001 BMW from a dealership, and everything seemed to be in order. The car was clean and in good condition with only 135,000 miles on it, and the dealer gave them a month-long warranty.

“I was all excited to have this nice BMW,” Johnson told NBC. “It seemed like a good price for the mileage ... [the dealer] made it seem all legit.”

The couple, who found the deal on Craigslist, filled out a three-page contract, paid $3,700 in cash and drove their newly purchased vehicle until they were pulled over by police.

When the couple returned to the dealership where they had purchased it, they found an “empty

husk of a shop,” according to NBC News.

“All cleared up except for some stacked rims and tires when it was a complete business days before,” Louscher said.

Apparently the Lakewood dealership, ODG Auto Sales, wasn’t registered with the state, and the salesman couldn’t be found. If the couple had insisted on getting a pink slip, the problem could have been avoided, experts say. The pair said the salesman was going to mail it after he straightened out some paperwork problems.

“He seemed like a nice guy. It seemed professional,” Johnson said.

Ramon Vladimir Torres Quiroz, who sold the BMW to the couple, said he has sold 200 cars in the past year with only five complaints.

“Don’t judge me yet,” Quiroz told NBC News.

He plans to give the couple a refund as soon as possible.

“I’m working on it,” he said.

“As soon as I get the money, I’ll get them their money back.”

Residential and commercial rates for solid waste collection will increase next month. The City’s agreement with Consolidated Disposal Services allows for rate increases if there are increased demands for labor, according to Public Works Director Louis Atwell. “We are receiving a plethora of illegal dumping and it has caused us to do extra work,” Franklin said.

This means rate increases would be delayed for four years in total. The delay applies to: primary, non-repetitive loss residences that are currently grandfathered; all properties sold after July 6, 2012; and all properties that purchased a new policy after July 6, 2012.

• Requires FEMA to propose an affordability framework that addresses the identified affordability issues within 18 months after the completion of the study and provides six months for Congressional review.

• Allows FEMA to utilize National Flood Insurance Funds to reimburse policyholders who successfully appeal a map determination.

• Eliminates the 50 percent cap on state and local contributions to levee construction and reconstruction.

• Protects the so-called “basement exception,” which allows the lowest proofed opening in a home to be used for determining flood insurance rates.

• Establishes a Flood Insurance Rate Map Advocate within FEMA to answer current and prospective policyholder questions about the flood mapping process.

• Requires FEMA to certify that the agency has fully adopted a modernized risk-based approach to analyzing flood risk.

The bipartisan deal comes after several weeks of negotiations with Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate. On October 9, in the midst of the government shutdown, Waters convened a bipartisan meeting of nearly 20 House Members, as well as Senate staff, to build consensus around an agreement to delay and fix the program. ect, he said, and needs to “come out in big numbers.”

Why Overparenting Hurts Kids…and How to Back Off (Part 1)

hile we parents may have the best of intentions, our frantic efforts to shepherd our children to happiness and success are making kids anxious and depressed. Princess Ivana shares eight “hovering recovery” tactics to help you back off…while still giving your kids what they need.

Your son falls on the playground, and you instantly swoop down to hug him and exclaim over his scuffed knee. Your daughter has a fight with her best friend, and you quickly call the girl’s mother to try to intercede. You check over each child’s homework every night so that you can find any mistakes before the teacher’s red grading pen comes out. And any time a school project is underway, you can be found lurking in the art nook saying things like, “A purple sky, really?” or, “Wouldn’t the glitter glue be a better choice than the silver spray paint?” (If, that is, you don’t take over the project altogether.)

If any of these scenarios sound familiar to you, you’re not alone: Overparenting is quickly becoming normal parenting in America. Yes, we moms (and dads) have the best of intentions: We want to protect our children from unnecessary pain, fear, failure, disappointment, and other unpleasantness. But according to Princess Ivana Pignatelli Aragona Cortes, we’re actually doing our children a big disservice.

“Today, kids are overbooked, overtested, overprotected, and as a result, under-believed in,” comments Ivana, a featured blogger at Modern Mom, founder of Princess Ivana—The Modern Princess, and coauthor of A Simple Guide to Pregnancy & Baby’s First Year (Don’t Sweat It Media, Inc., April 2013, ISBN: 978-09888712-0-5, $15.95, www.princessivana.com). “When you try to control too much, you rob your child of valuable learning opportunities, including how to make decisions. In fact, new research is discovering a connection between children’s stress and overparenting. In a Johns Hopkins study, hyper-parenting was more closely related to increased anxiety in children than the mental health of the parent or parental rejection. In turn, elevated anxiety (in children and adults!) is easily linked to depression and behavioral issues.

“Even toddlers with moms who are too directive in play are more aggressive and more likely to throw toys,” Ivana points out. “The opposite is also true: Moms who are less intrusive tend to have happier children.”

Considering that several years ago UNICEF ranked children in the U.S. as the second-unhappiest in the world, it’s fair to say that overparenting is having major negative—albeit unintended—side effects. (If you’re curious, the most unhappy children in the world come from the U.K., where 1 out of 10 children over age eight are unhappy. The U.K. is also considered one of the most “overprotective” countries in the world when it comes to children).

The negative consequences of overparenting aren’t limited to childhood, either. A recent series of investigations showed that as adults, children who were overparented tend to have “lower self-efficacy and an exaggerated sense of entitlement.”

Furthermore, parents themselves “are likely to be less satisfied with family communication and connection.” Even knowing these facts, though, many parents will still have trouble backing off.

“It’s true; most of us have had our bouts of hovering to one degree or another,” Ivana admits. “I’m a recovering helicopter mom myself. I was especially overprotective and overinvolved when my son and daughter were smaller. But a trip to France and its playgrounds helped to cure me of that. There, I witnessed a free-for-all circus of kids-fixing-kids and negotiating their own truces, while parents sat around having fun talking to each other.

“For example, American parents worry about sticks,” she recounts.

“Usually, we’ll take them away from our kids because we think they make dangerous toys. However, in Paris I saw French kids swinging branches at each other—but they somehow managed to survive without incident.

Since then I’ve learned to step back a bit, and I’m still learning.”

The annual Palm Springs Veterans Day Parade is one of the largest and well-attended parades in the Southland.
