Polls Show Clinton and Trump in a Dead Heat Why So Close?

ith nine weeks to go until the big election, all eyes are turning toward Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump. It’s shaping up to be a dirty fight to the finish between 2 very different candidates—each calling the other bigoted, unfit and shady.

On Wednesday a CNN poll showed Trump 2 points ahead of Clinton—a surprising finding given the incendiary tone of Trump’s campaign. Trump tops Clinton 45% to 43% in the new survey, with Libertarian Gary Johnson standing at 7% among likely voters in this poll and the Green Party’s Jill Stein at just 2%.

With Clinton more heavily favored among Hispanics, African Americans and other people of color; women, younger voters and college-educated whites, why is her opponent pulling ahead?

Clinton enjoyed a 7 percent bump in the polls following the Democratic National Convention in July.

Storing Photos and Important Papers

O

ur photographs are precious to us. Some have come down through the generations and some of us are the family historians and keeper of the photographs. It’s a big job, but someone has to do it.

Thirty years ago I became the family historian and everyone turned their photos over to me.

When that happened, I learned how to best store them for maximum longevity. Now, there are new options which also allow us to share the family photographs with our relatives.

Photo albums have been the mainstay of storage. However, not all albums are good. Albums with sticky pages that hold photos in place are a disaster if you ever want to remove them. I learned the hard way that once they are stuck for a few years, they cannot be removed without tearing them.

Likewise, never use albums with plastic sleeves unless the words “PH balanced” and “Acid free” are present. Certain forms of plastic give off gasses that will discolor, make photographs brittle, and greatly shorten their life.

They are costly, but I use archival photo albums obtained from www.lightimpressionsdirect.com.

Never store photographs with paperclips, rubber bands or tape attached. If you need to identify the photo, only write lightly on the back with a pencil. Printing is better than handwriting as not everyone is good at deciphering our script.

The newest option is to place photographs on a DVD. Check with Costco, Walgreens, and CVS about this service. It can get costly, depending on the number of photos you have. If your budget doesn’t allow for endless expenditures of this kind, ask your relatives to pitch in a few dollars to cover the cost of digitizing the photos they gave you. Sweeten

If you have a scanner for your computer and the time, you can do the work yourself and save a bundle of money. Once scanned, you should store these precious memories in two ways in case your computer crashes and your files are irretrievable. First, on a CD and second, on a thumb drive.

Important papers - birth certificates, marriage licenses, death certificates, home title, insurance policies, etc – should be copied and scanned at home or digitized and put on a CD. The originals should be kept in a safe place – consider a safe deposit box at the bank or a home strong box with a high heat rating. Copies can be stored with your earthquake supplies, with relatives, or any safe place in your home.

For both photographs and important papers, the storage location and temperature are important.

Damp basements, garages, and hot attics are not good. Storing at a temperature below 750 and humidity below 650 will prolong the life of photographs and important papers. For more information, go to www.archives.gov/preservation/ family-archives/storing.html.

$10 Million Spent to Register New Immigrant Voters

M

onths after the Obama administration spent $19 million to register new immigrant voters that will likely support Democrats in November, it’s dedicating an additional $10 million in a final push as the presidential election approaches.

The money is distributed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Homeland Security agency that oversees lawful immigration, to organizations that help enhance pathways to naturalization by offering immigrants free citizenship instruction, English, U.S. history and civics courses. Officially, they’re known as “citizenship integration grants.”

Since 2009 USCIS has doled out $63 million in these grants to prepare more than 156,000 resident immigrants in dozens of states for U.S. citizenship, according to the agency’s figures. Besides the free classes, Uncle Sam also offers immigrants free “naturalization legal services,” the latest USCIS grant announcement states.

“Recipient organizations serve both traditional immigrant destinations and new immigrant getaway cities in 21 states,” the USCIS document reads. The latest $10 million investment will prepare approximately 25,000 residents from more than 50 countries, according to the agency. More than a dozen states—including California, New York, Florida, Washington and Ohio—with large resident immigrant populations are being targeted as well as cities with huge immigrant populations such as Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Washington D.C.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been aggressive in promoting its citizen integration grant program this year, offering large sums to recruit new groups that can offer immigrants the services they need to become citizens.

Clearly, the ultimate goal is qualifying as many immigrants as possible to vote since they tend to cast ballots for Democrats.

“We intend to award about $1 million to first-time recipients in the Citizenship and Integration Grant Program for fiscal year 2016,” the agency’s grant announcement states. “If you represent one of these organizations, or know of an interested organization, we strongly encourage that organization to consider applying. Additionally, another $9 million will fund programs that provide both citizenship instruction and instruction and naturalization application services.” Some might consider this a cash giveaway.

housands of cheering spectators at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, NY witnessed history being made on Monday when tennis star, Serena Williams won her 308th career match at the U.S. Open. She became the winningest player in Grand Slam history.

USA Today reports that Williams first matched the records of Martina Navratilova, who has 306 career match wins, and of Roger Federer, who has 307, before making her way to the head of the pack after a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Yaroslava Shvedova to make history and secure a spot in the U.S. Open quarterfinals.

“I just feel like I’m going out there doing what I need to do,” Williams said. “I’m not overplaying, I’m not underplaying. I’m just trying to play my way into this tournament.”

he exciting return of the Rams to Los Angeles was a déjà vu moment for those of us old enough to remember. In the old days, the team played regularly at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Who could forget the Fearsome Foursome in the 60s? Rosey Grier, Lamar Lundy, Merlin Olsen and Deacon Jones made up the Los Angeles Rams starting defensive line.

They were hard to beat and Dick Butkus called them “the most dominant line in football history.”

The Rams was the first NFL team to play in Los Angeles and among the first to integrate with African American players. They signed Kenny Washington and Woody Strode in 1946.

The Rams were once a glory team of the NFL, but has struggled to regain prominence for the last 10

years. Now that the players are back where they belong, it’s like Magic.

The Rams came out of the gate winning from Day One during the preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys, 28-14. The next week, they won again, 21-20 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The team’s re-entry into Los Angeles has resurrected everything it

The Rams’ Midas touch caused the team to sell out of season tickets within 6 hours. Its 20-year absence from the City of Angels created a vacuum not only in Los Angeles football, but socially as well.

Unlike dozens of other cities where families bond over the sport, a whole generation of football lovers missed the opportunity to take their kids to a football game. We had no bragging rights for our own home team. The city that once boasted two home teams—the Rams and the Raiders—was suddenly absent from the roster of NFL football hosts.

Now that the Rams are back, football fever has never been so great. Folks here feel another connection, and thanks to the Lakers, Dodgers and Kings, have sports teams to cheer on all year ‘round.

That said, if you haven’t yet watched an L.A. Rams game, either in person or on TV, it’s time to get behind them. Our home team will play the 49ers on Monday, September 9 in San Francisco’s Levi Stadium. Catch the action on Monday Night Football. Yes, “we’re more than ready for some football.”

He started the final two games of the 2014 campaign for Houston and won both contests— home games over Baltimore and Jacksonville.

A University of Houston alum, Keenum spent his first two NFL seasons with the team that shares his college town. He spent seven weeks on the team’s practice squad before injuries at the quarterback position opened the door for a return to the Texans to complete the 2014 season.

The Rams traded a seventh-round pick to the Texans to re-acquire him during the 2015 offseason.

In college, Keenum set NCAA records for career passing yards (18,312), touchdown passes (150) and completions (1,460).

ITT Shuts Door on 35,000 Students

I

TT Technical Institutes abruptly closed more than 130 campuses on Tuesday, leaving careers of thousands of students up in the air.

Thousands more are now unemployed. The schools came under fire by the federal government for recruitment and accounting practices.

It is the latest in a growing list of for-profit trade schools in California that have fallen under scrutiny by the feds.

Classes were supposed to start this month for about 35,000 students and 8,000 employees will lose their jobs. Campuses are located in Sylmar, Torrance, San Dimas, San Bernardino, Corona and Orange.

Numerous state and federal investigations have revealed that ITT did not comply with accreditation requirements. Another red flag, sources say, is that large vocational schools like ITT are publicly traded. It makes you wonder what their real motives are, one source said.

ITT said in a statement Tuesday that there has been a “complete disregard by the U.S. Department of Education for due process to the company.”

“These unwarranted actions, taken without proving a single allegation, are a ‘lawless execution,’ as noted by a recent editorial in The Wall Street Journal. We were not provided with a hearing or an appeal,” the company said in the statement.

Veronica Harms, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Consumer Affairs’ Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education, warned prospective students looking to attend a private for-profit school in California to check her agency’s website before signing up. The site lists schools that are licensed and accredited to operate in the state. She also advises people to Google schools for ratings, complaints and lawsuits.

On Sept. 1, California’s Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education issued an emergency decision banning ITT from accepting new students at its 15 California locations. The Education Department ultimately opted to ban ITT from enrolling new students who depend on federal financial aid.

Similar concerns by the U.S. Department of Education fueled a shutdown of the Marinello Schools of Beauty earlier this year. Marinello abruptly shut down, closing all 56 of its campuses, including 39 in California, after the U.S. Department of Education said the for-profit cosmetology school was improperly allocating federal student aid money, the L.A. Times reported.

The schools allegedly requested aid for students without a valid high school diploma, underawarded some student funds, charged fees to students who took too long to finish their programs and committed “other acts of misrepresentation.”

Clinton has been hard at work, touring around the country and outlining plans for her presidency, but her long absence of press conferences has added to the public view that she is not transparent.

Her absence has created a media vacuum. Trump, by contrast, is hogging the spotlight every day for better or worse.

Currently, Clinton continues to lead Trump in key battle ground states. NBC News said Trump has zero support by African Americans in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

How Technology Is Simplifying Relief of Chronic Pain Doctors hate seeing patients suffering from chronic pain, and not just because their instinct is immediately to want to help their patients to feel better. One of the primary challenges doctors confront is that even though chronic pain is common, it can be extremely difficult to diagnose and treat. The condition can be debilitating for patients and frustrating for the doctors trying to help them.

“Chronic pain is a multi-faceted condition,” says Dr. Ahmed Raslan, assistant professor of Neurological Surgery at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland. “The causes are varied, and each person experiences chronic pain differently. The sheer number of variables in play can make effective treatment extremely complex. It’s not unusual for doctors and patients to try multiple types and combinations of treatment before finding something that provides at least partial relief, and that process can take months and even years.”

More than 11 percent of American adults suffer from chronic pain,

according to a recent National Institutes of Health study. People who live with chronic pain report numerous negative effects on their lives, including damage to personal relationships, decreased productivity at work, disruption of their daily routine and even depression. The Institute of Medicine has estimated the medical costs and lost productivity associated with chronic pain could cost as much as $635 billion per year.

“Many chronic pain patients face barriers to effective treatment, including the need for continual doctor visits to adjust aspects of their treatment, and difficulty traveling to meet with their physicians,” Dr. Raslan says. “Conditions such as intractable back pain, nerve injury, neck pain, pain after hernia operations, spinal cord injury pain, post herpetic neuralgia, complex regional pain syndrome, and pain after failed back surgery can force patients to try multiple treatments.

Blood pressure can fluctuate quite a bit throughout the day—as much as 30 to 40 points. The ideal way to create a baseline measurement is by checking 3 to 4 times an hour during the day and every 30 minutes at night.

If you’re over 50, the top number is the one to watch. Know the difference between the top and bottom numbers. The top number measures systolic pressure or the force at the moment the heart beats, pumping blood throughout the body. Your arteries and vital organs experience the flow of systolic pressure, which makes seniors especially vulnerable to increases in blood pressure. Diastolic pressure is the bottom number. It measures pressure between the beats, where blood flows back to the heart.

You can lower pressure without drugs. Dropping 11 pounds can reduce pressure by more than 4 points, according to studies. In addition, eating 5 fruits and vegetables daily and cutting back on salt have been shown to be effective in reversing hypertension.

Depending on how fast and regular the therapy is being delivered, patients may feel a slight tingling sensation in the area of the body associated with their pain, and in most cases patients report that sensation replaces the feeling of pain, which corresponds to pain relief.”

Though SCS has been around for years, recent advances from St. Jude Medical have made the proven effective treatment simpler for patients and doctors to use successfully. St. Jude Medical recently launched the Proclaim Elite SCS System, which is the most advanced SCS system the company has ever developed, and which includes a new, innovative platform that enables patients to adjust therapy

The company does note that implantation of a spinal cord stimulation system can involve risk, such as painful stimulation, loss of pain relief and surgical risks, such as paralysis, during the implantation procedure. Patients should talk to their physician to determine if spinal cord stimulation therapy is right for them and their particular pain condition.

For many patients the therapy can deliver pain relief leading to dramatic improvement in quality of life. “Before I tried SCS, managing my chronic pain was very difficult,” says Ronald Seeling, 50, of Warren, Oregon, a patient of Dr. Raslan.

“For many years, I was taking a lot of pain medication and my quality of life was diminished. I could barely walk and couldn’t do things around the house or visit with my grandkids.”

LA County Endorses LA City’s $1.2 Billion Bond Measure to Build Housing for the Homeless

T

he Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors threw its support behind the City of Los Angeles’ $1.2-billion bond measure to build housing for the homeless.

If approved by voters on November 8, Proposition HHH would finance the construction of 8,000 to 10,000 permanent supportive housing units for the chronically homeless over the next decade. It would also fund affordable housing, temporary shelters and other amenities needed by the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless.

“Let’s get on with the business of making a significant dent in homelessness,” Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said. “We cannot afford to allow the status quo to persist—our fellow Angelenos are depending on us.”

Testifying before the Board, Mayor Eric Garcetti explained that Proposition HHH stands for homelessness, housing and hope. He added it goes hand in hand with the County’s own efforts to address the crisis of homelessness.

“A year ago, we didn’t have a strategy. A year ago, we weren’t working together.

Today, it’s a very different pic-

ture,” the mayor said. “We’re now aligned in a comprehensive homelessness strategy to make sure that we can address the immediate needs of unsheltered residents.”

Councilman Marqueece HarrisDawson said Proposition HHH would house women, children, veterans, seniors, foster youth and the disabled, among others. “Without this bond, we would be stuck at about 3,000 units of permanent supportive housing,” he said. “With Proposition HHH, we can more than triple that number.”

City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana said, “The plan addresses not just the immediate needs of the homeless, but the long-term needs.” He added a civilian oversight committee would be among those ensuring the funds would be spent appropriately.

Ruben Gonzales with the LA Area Chamber of Commerce and United Way’s Christine Margiotta also testified in support of the motion. Both represent key stakeholders in mobilizing the business sector and community organizations to support city and county efforts to address homelessness.

What Is a Good Credit Score?

good credit score is what each of us aspires to. After all, a credit score is one of the important determining factors when it comes to borrowing money – and getting a low rate when you do. But trying to pin down a specific number that means your credit score is “good” can be tricky. When it comes to figuring out what makes a good credit score, there are a few different schools of thought.

Most credit scores—including the FICO* score and the latest version of the VantageScore—operate within the range of 301 to 850. Within that range, there are different categories, from bad to excellent.

• Excellent Credit: 750+ • Good Credit: 700-749 • Fair Credit: 650-699 • Poor Credit: 600-649 • Bad Credit: below 600 But even these aren’t set in stone.

That’s because lenders all have their own definitions of what is a good credit score. One lender that is looking to approve more borrowers might approve applicants with credit scores of 680 or higher.

Another might be more selective and only approve those with scores of 750 or higher. Or both lenders might offer credit to anyone with a score of at least 650, but charge consumers with scores below 700 a higher interest rate!

With credit scores, the higher the number, the lower the risk.

That means consumers with higher scores are more likely to get approved for credit, and to get the best interest rates when they do.

And they are more likely to get discounts on insurance and qualify for less down when it comes to large purchases. For example, if you’re buying a $300,000 house

with a 30-year fixed mortgage, and you have good credit, you could end up paying more than $90,000 less for that house over the life of the loan than if your credit was mediocre. This means the monthly payments are lower over time as well!

To carry out this important mission Obama created a special Task Force on New Americans chaired by his Domestic Policy Director, Cecilia Muñoz, the former vice president of the powerful open borders group National Council of La Raza (NCLR). Millions of taxpayer dollars have funded

the task force’s various enterprises, including multilingual media campaigns promoting immigrant rights.

The goal is to “strengthen civic, economic and linguistic integration and to build strong and welcoming communities,” according to a reportissued by the task force. In the end communities will be strengthened by welcoming all residents, the administration assures.

Practically every federal agency is participating in the effort by contributing resources and creating programs to help immigrants.

For example the Department of Labor (DOL) is implementing “new workforce programs” for the “new Americans” and the Department of Education is promoting “funding oppor-

tunities” to assure that the immigrants “are provided the tools they need to succeed.”

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is collaborating with other agencies to release a career and credentialing toolkit on “immigrant-focused careerpathways programs.”

The Department of Justice (DOJ) and USCIS are making sure the new Americans have worker rights and protections and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is launching a two-year pilot to assure that non English speakers have “meaningful access to housing programs” subsidized by American taxpayers.

Los Angeles International Airport Launches Groundbreaking Partnership to Train Airport Service Workers in Emergency Response

irport officials announced today a groundbreaking partnership with Service Employees International Union-United Service Workers West (SEIU-USWW) to train hundreds of airport service workers contracted by the airlines, concessionaires, and other tenants to respond effectively during emergencies at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Service workers perform a wide range of assignments for airport tenants, including wheelchair and baggage handling, interior aircraft cleaning, airline security, aircraft fueling, cargo and dangerous goods handling, aeronautical maintenance, and custodial services.

“It takes the entire airport community to respond effectively to a serious airport emergency,” said Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners President Sean Burton, “LAX staff has made significant changes to ensure airport safety through improved response coordination, increased emergency management staff resources, new equipment, extensive training, and establishing mutual-aid agreements with outside organizations, such as the American Red Cross. Training airport service workers to assist passengers during critical times complements the overall emergency-response effort.”

SEIU-USWW and its awardwinning training fund called the Building Skills Partnership, airline services provider G2 Secure Staff, American Airlines, and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) began developing the curriculum and pilot training program in February 2016.

The pilot program will launch in the next few weeks for a group of workers who provide services directly to passengers in Terminal 4. The pilot program will be evaluated, refined as needed, and then tailored to address the unique characteristics of each terminal, other airport locations, work-group classifications, terminal-specific emergency procedures, and chain of command.

Core principles and elements of the training will be consistent throughout the airport, focusing on emergency observation skills, stakeholder communications, evacuation procedures, notification protocols, basic understanding of the Incident Command System, and identifying emergency responders of partner agencies.

The new training program parallels the emergency-response management method advocated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) called the “Whole Community Approach.” This ap-

proach recognizes that private-sector individuals and organizations can play important roles during emergencies. The approach is based on three principles: understanding the needs of the community, engaging and empowering all parts of the community, and strengthening what works on a daily basis.

The training program also helps service providers comply with requirements of their Certified Service Provider Program (CSPP) License Agreement that allows them to operate and conduct business at LAX. The CSPP establishes minimum standards that include emergency

The study also reported that LAX’s ongoing capital-improvement program creates an additional 121,640 annual jobs with labor income of $7.6 billion and economic output of $20.3 billion, $966 million in state and local taxes, and $1.6 billion in federal tax revenues.

LAX is part of a system of three Southern California airports—along with LA/Ontario International and Van Nuys general aviation—that are owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports, a proprietary department of the City of Los Angeles that receives no funding from

preparedness, LAX rules and regulations, compliance officer, training requirements and minimum staffing, customer service, equipment and motor vehicles, administrative requirements, labor harmony language, and applicable contractor responsibility program requirements.

“The airlines and other tenants at LAX contract thousands of workers to provide passenger and aircraft services. They are valued members of the LAX community,” said LAWA Chief Executive Officer Deborah Flint. “Training these workers provides them with skills to keep themselves safe during an airport emergency, to directly assist passengers, and to contribute to the overall emergency response and recovery.”
