President Trump has claimed repeatedly that most federal workers support his tactic of shutting down the government to enforce his demand for a border wall — including those directly affected by it. But a new poll of government employees shows that few actually do.

According to the survey conducted by the Government Business Council and GovExec.com and released Tuesday, 71 percent of federal workers oppose the shutdown, compared to just 21 percent that support it. Just 34 percent of federal employees surveyed support Trump’s demand for funding for the wall, while 56 percent oppose it. And of those 2 workers against the

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said in a Wednesday tweet that he is cutting off federal money to fight California wildfires, claiming the money is being wasted.

“Billions of dollars are sent to the State of California for Forrest fires that, with proper Forrest Management, would never happen,” Trump said. “Unless they get their act together, which is unlikely, I have ordered FEMA to send no more money. It is a disgraceful situation in lives & money!”

It’s unclear whether Trump has already ordered the Federal Emergency Management Agency to cut off money for California fires or is threatening to do so as he has in the past.

Critics on Twitter questioned whether Trump could legally withhold FEMA money that has already been appropriated.

State officials have accused Trump of playing politics with the California wildfires, and said he does not understand the issues involved in fighting fires.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has criticized Trump over firefighting policy, tweeted after the president’s shutdown speech on Tuesday that “Trump’s go-to is governing by fear and division.”

“To the best of my knowledge, this marks the first time in our Nation’s history that service members in a U.S. armed force have not been paid during a lapse in government appropriations,” Schultz wrote in a letter to them. “I recognize the anxiety and uncertainty this situation places on you and your family, and we are working closely with service organizations on your behalf.

More than 30,000 educators have walked off the job demanding higher pay, smaller classes and more staff, requests that the county’s independent school district has described as unaffordable. The two sides have not held formal talks since the strike began on Monday.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and California Governor Gavin Newsom, both Democrats, have urged the two sides to return to the bargaining table. The school system does not answer to either of the two executives.

Thousands of teachers represented by the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) union were set to picket on Wednesday, while the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) planned to use administrators and substitute teachers to keep schools open.

UTLA President Alex CaputoPearl told a morning news conference that he aimed to “get back to the table very soon.”

A representative for LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Newsom has been pushing for the strike to end.

INGLEWOOD RISES AS FOOTBALL STADIUM, OTHER PROJECTS PROGRESS

Development in Inglewood has skyrocketed ahead of the opening of the stadium that will house the National Football League’s Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers.

The stadium is part of the LA Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park, a massive development spearheaded by Rams owner Stan Kroenke. The development features a performing arts venue; 2,500 units of housing; and 890,000 square

feet of retail space. It will also have a 300-room hotel; 780,000 square feet of office space; 25 acres of parks; and a performance venue.

It will open in stages starting in 2020.

“History is being made,” Inglewood Mayor James Butts said.

The construction of multiple aspects of the project is ongoing and is reshaping the landscape of Inglewood, with hotels as a key aspect.

In addition to the hotel in the LA Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park, a 120-room Tru

NFL Media is developing a 200,000-square-foot complex at Hollywood Park, expected to open in 2021.

Healey said the area is unique in that it is one of the few areas in Los Angeles that can accommodate large tenants.

“We have the ability to customize buildings for them. There is a good amount of land and entitlements for them,” he said.

Other entertainment sources are betting big on Inglewood. The Los Angeles Philharmonic will relocate its youth orchestra to a Frank Gehry-designed project in the city. The Los Angeles Clippers are also looking to build a stadium in Inglewood although the project has yet to be approved.

Housing push the construction boom is not limited to commercial space around the stadium. Several large residential projects are in the works as well, including a 228-unit detached condominium complex at 333 N. Prairie Ave. being developed

The Los Angeles Rams are one game away from the Super Bowl after they beat the Dallas Cowboys 30-22 last Saturday in the NFC divisional playoff game at the Coliseum in front of 77,187 fans. Three years ago the Rams were one of the worst teams in the NFL and now they are one of the best.

How did that happen? If you had point to the main reason for such a tremendous turn around it’s the Rams head coach Sean McVay. In two years McVay has changed the culture and the mind set of this team. He has assembled an outstanding coaching staff and he has brought in players that believe in his system. “Coach McVay is a great coach,” said Rams running back Todd Gurley II after their win over the Cowboys. “It all starts with the coaches.”

One of McVay’s special projects has been developing the Rams young quarterback, Jared Goff. In 2016 Goff was a green rookie who

appeared to be headed in the wrong direction. Now he is one of the best signal callers in the league.

On Sunday at 12 p.m. the Rams will face the Saints for a chance to play in the Super Bowl. The Rams lost to the Saints during the regular season 45-35 on November 4, at New Orleans. Now they return to New Orleans and try to win in one of the hardest stadiums to play in.

To beat the Saints they will need to duplicate their effort against the Cowboys. Their one, two running back combination of Todd Gurley II inside and outside and C.J. Anderson inside will have to be running on all cylinders to beat the Saints. They combined for 238 yards running the ball against the Cowboys. “They are a great compliment to each other,” said McVay after their win over Dallas.

The running game also helps the passing game. Ram quarterback Goff threw for 186 yards against the Cowboys, completing 15 of 28 passes with no interceptions. The last few games everyone is talking about their running game but to beat New Orleans the Rams will also need to successfully pass the ball.

“It feels great to have two 100 yard rushers,” said Goff. “Whenever you run the ball like that it takes a lot of pressure off of the passing game.

Gurley was also happy with the results on Saturday. “When we dominate the line of scrimmage we will probably win the game. We have been doing that all season.

I could not run for all of those yards without our offensive line.

It starts with controlling the line of scrimmage and that balance between passing and running.”

The Rams were built for this moment. Whether they seize the moment, we will find out on Sunday.

During the public comments, an Inglewood resident applauded the Inglewood Police Department, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Red Cross for their response to an apartment fire that destroyed one apartment unit and two vehicles on West Queen Street on Saturday night. Firefighters evacuated the affected building and the adjacent buildings and swiftly extinguished the fire. Police officials summoned Red Cross volunteers who provided emergency resources for the families who were not able to re-enter their apartments.

Several council members acknowledged the fine work of the public safety officials and commented that the work that fire and police representatives complete 24/7 frequently goes without recognition.

CALLS FOR AN END TO THE TRUMP SHUTDOWN Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee, entered the following statement into the Congressional Record yesterday on the Trump Shutdown and its harmful impacts on federal workers and airport safety and security in her district and throughout the country.

“Today is day 26 of the Trump Shutdown.

“Federal workers missed their first paycheck last Friday, and still there is no end in sight to this cruel and senseless shutdown. It is truly shameful that President Trump and Congressional Republicans are so desperate to secure taxpayer funding for an irrational border wall that they’re willing to harm hardworking Americans and jeopardize national security by shutting down the federal government.

“This outrageous shutdown has furloughed 400,000 federal workers, and it’s forcing another 400,000 federal workers to work without pay. Among those working without pay are 53,000 Transportation Security Administration employees, more than 24,000 air traffic controllers and other Federal Aviation Administration employees, 54,000 Customs and Border Protection agents and customs officers, 42,000 service members in the United States Coast Guard, 17,000 Bureau of Prisons correctional officers, 14,000 FBI agents, and 6,000 Forest Service firefighters.

“These dedicated public servants go to work every day for the American people. These hardworking people keep us safe. They should not have to worry about how they will keep a roof over their heads and feed their families.

“My congressional district is home to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the sixth busiest airport in the world and the third busiest in the United States. In 2017, more than 84 million passengers used LAX. All of these passengers depend upon the TSA’s airport security screeners and the FAA’s air traffic controllers to get them to their destinations safely.

“The Trump Shutdown doesn’t just affect government employees.

An economic study in 2011 reported that operations at LAX generated 294,400 jobs in Los Angeles County with labor income of $13.6 billion and economic output of more than $39.7 billion. The economic vitality of Los Angeles County depends upon the safety and security of LAX and the TSA and FAA employees who work there.

“TSA employees are dedicated public servants who risk their lives every day to keep our nation’s airports and travelers safe. On November 1, 2013, a Transportation Security Officer named Gerardo Hernandez was tragically killed in the line of duty during an active shooter incident at LAX. He was the first TSA employee to be killed in the line of duty, and my colleagues and I passed the bipartisan Gerardo Hernandez Airport Security Act of 2015 in his honor. Our President has forgotten the critical role these American patriots serve in our national security.

“Today, at LAX and airports throughout the country, Transportation Security Officers like Gerardo Hernandez are working without pay!

“The Trump Shutdown is endangering public safety, national security, and the livelihoods of the people whose job it is to protect us.

“Democrats want to end this shutdown now. On Day One, the new Democratic House of Representatives passed Senate Republican legislation to end the Trump Shutdown and re-open government. Despite the Republicans’ relentless obstruction, Democrats have continued to take further action to re-open government, passing individual Senate Republican appropriations bills to re-open all government agencies.

“American families and workers should not be punished because of a policy disagreement in Washington, D.C. Donald Trump should stop holding the safety, security, and paychecks of workers in my district, and throughout the country, hostage. He must re-open the government immediately.”
