WHY? WHY? WHY? termination, daring devotion, steadfast commitment to his wife and children and his privacy.

My son reminded me on that fateful Sunday, that I bought him a No. 8 Kobe jersey many years ago. He Facetime me wearing it to refresh my memory.

It was ironic, in that he asked more about Kobe’s daughter Gianna than he did Kobe. He insisted on speaking to his 10-year old girl cousin Carlie, and we talked much longer than usual because of Kobe.

During moments such as these, as a writer you want to dig down deep, but I can’t. I thought I wouldn’t shed a damn tear, but while watching the Grammys and listening to Alicia Keys and Boyz II Men sing, “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye” I freaking lost it.

Damn!!!Why? Why Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna? Why the other seven souls who perished on the plane with him?

Why? Why? Why? One can contemplate all they want, just as I am. We always want to know why. Pending investigations will reveal more and offer clues as to why that helicopter went down.

However, that will not fill this monumental void.

We lost Kobe Bryant! Why???

I had just returned from the National Newspapers Publishers Association Mid Winter Conference, and I was exhausted.

All I wanted to do was lay down and fall asleep. Between channel surfing from Lifetime, CNN, ESPN, the nationally televised basketball game on CBS featuring Maryland at Indiana, I then landed on ABC7 where the NFL Pro Bowl was on.

I finished watching the end of the Indiana game, and was snoozing at the Pro Bowl. I slowly awoke and heard the announcers say something to the effect that “we mourn the loss of Kobe Bryant.”

Sickeningly, I sat up and popped open my computer and went directly to the Los Angeles Times website and it was there I saw the red breaking news banner revealing the terrible news.

NO! HELL NO!! WHY? I went back to the television, switching from channel to channel. KCAL, KTLA all of them reporting the same.

KOBE BRYANT IS DEAD!!!

I went to my computer again, immediately posted on Facebook; NO. NOT KOBE…NOT NOW!!

King Jr. assassination, the phone call from my sister telling me my mother had died, the other one when my niece told me my sister died.

Indelible moments that gut your soul, pierce your heart, send your mind racing for answers you will seldom if ever find. Sunday January 26, 2020 was one of those moments.

WHY? Grounded in a belief greater than I, do not offer any immediate solace in these moments. You’re sad, mad, speechless and devastated.

A couple of days have past as of this writing and I still ponder…WHY? Sunday continued to unfold like a fog. I was going to stay in bed all day, but the death of Kobe ruined those plans.

I wasn’t going to join the family for the traditional Sunday dinner, I’d blame it on jet lag, but Kobe made me get up and go.

While at the Sizzler in Carson, every television station in the restaurant displayed images of the tragedy.

The patrons solemnly ordered their meals; it’s moments after church let out for many of them. Few if any words were spoken. You could hear forks cling from plates, perhaps a child voice would elevate above that.

The hostess was bit off their bouncy routine.

Was it because of Kobe?

I’ve been rather fortunate to work

in a profession for more than 40 years where I get to see transcendent athletes perform in person. If I’m lucky, I get to ask a question or two.

Often I take for granted that theses iconic superstars such as Kobe are far from being like me, a mere mortal.

That is until something like this happens.

I was once bold enough to walk up to Kobe after a game and ask for his phone number, thinking he’d curse me out or look at me like some kind of fool. But instead he gave his cell number and on a couple of occasions I called and he answered.

It wasn’t a long conversation at all, once he told me he was boarding the bus during a road trip. Another time I asked why don’t the Lakers trade for Baron Davis and get him some help; he agreed it wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Even as reporters we become in awe of the subjects we cover, some reporters have much greater access than I did because their platforms are as such they command a different level of respect from the athletes they cover, so thus their relationships are much closer.

Nonetheless, like many I was a fan of Kobe Bryant, but not in the traditional sense where I went out and bought jerseys and other memorabilia.

Shocking news of the crash of Kobe Bryant’s helicopter has caused reverberations around the world and individuals in the City of Inglewood, where Kobe began his celebrated NBA career at the Forum, have joined the chorus of condolences that extend across the globe. Kobe, his daughter and seven additional persons were killed when the helicopter in which they were travelling crashed into a hillside in Calabasas on Sunday, January 26.

Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts said, “I have known Kobe Bryant since he came into the league at the age of 17. He was a transformational player and one who made the residents of Inglewood proud. He will be missed.”

Kareem Abdul Jabar said Bryant was one of the greatest of all time and his tragic death shocked the world. He was a household name, his jersey sales were number one in China for years and he made Forbes’ list of “Highest Paid Athletes of All Time.” He had an estimated net worth of $770 million, according to Forbes.

In August Bryant and a partner officially set up a $100 million venturecapital fund, to invest in technology, media and data companies. They have already invested in 15 companies together since 2013 including sports media website The Players Tribune, legal-services company Legal Zoom, mobile game designer Scopely, Alibaba Group and others.

Inglewood Council Member Ralph Franklin shared his reaction to Bryant’s death. “Yesterday we experienced another tragedy of death. Nine individuals passed away in a routine helicopter ride and the results became known around the world. They will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved them. Kobe Bryant and his lovely daughter, Gianna were among them. He is an international icon, the epitome of a strong business man, a warrior that seeks perfection, a cheerful giver and a strong provider for his family. Life is so fragile! May they all

R.I.P.” Bryant had a collection of luxury cars that included several Italian exotic cars, a Bentley, and a Range Rover.

He also owned three houses in Orange County, California, which were worth a combined total of $18.8 million in 2012, according to Business Insider Bryant’s love of Italian cars may have something to do with his personal history. He was born August 23, 1978. in Philadelphia and his father, Joe Bryant, was a former Philadelphia 76ers player who moved his family to Rieti, Italy when he left the NBA. Bryant became accustomed to his new lifestyle and was fluent in Italian. During summers, he returned to the states to play summer league basketball.

Inglewood Council Member George Dotson shared his reaction to Bryant’s death. “My condolences to the Bryant family and the other families who lost loved ones. When I heard the news it was like a very hard gutpunch. I remember meeting Kobe as a rookie with my son at the Forum.

His impact on the Lakers and the entire Los Angeles community was immense and he will be greatly missed by fans around the world. I would like to salute the Life and Legacy of a true champion. Rest in Peace Kobe Bryant and blessings to your family.”

Council Member Eloy Morales shared his reaction. “My family sends our thoughts and prayers to Kobe’s family; we cannot begin to imagine their loss. We hope they find some peace with knowing we grieve with them. Our boys grew up idolizing Kobe, we are grateful for the many lessons he leaves for them. Kobe was an example to us all. Viva Kobe!”

“Words cannot express how I’m feeling today,” Allen Iverson, one of Bryant’s fiercest competitors said.

“The only two words that ring in my head — devastated and heartbroken.

I cannot seem to shake this feeling no matter what I’ve tried to do since hearing this yesterday.

UNSPEAKABLE Joe and Pam have lost their only son forever

BETTER DAYS- Kobe, Joe and Pam once shared an unyielding bond during the beginning of his iconic career, but when the Laker legend was killed in a tragic helicopter crash on Sunday Jan. 26, they were not on speaking terms with their only son.

Lakers legend Kobe Bryant everlasting legacy will be decorated with historical basketball achievements, devoted husband and father, Academy Award winner, eloquent storyteller and much more, but he will also leave us with the memory of being an estranged son to biological parents Pamela and Joe Bryant.

As the world continued to mourn the greatest Lakers player of all time, reporters were lurking around the Las Vegas condominium where Bryant’s parents Joe and Pamela reportedly reside.

Bryant’s glorious career had been shaped and honed by doting father Joe who toiled in the NBA for 8 seasons for his hometown Philadelphia 76ers, the then San Diego Clippers and the Houston Rockets from 1975-1983.

In fact Kobe nickname of “Bean” is derived from that of his father who was known as “Jellybean” because of his tremendous jumping ability.

Mambas’ Memorable Majestic Legacy

On January 26, 2020, Kobe “Bean” Bryant shook the world to the core when reports began to surface that Bryant was involved in a fatal helicopter crash alongside nine other passengers; including his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant.

TMZ news outlet was the first to report the tragic news on Instagram in a post that read “Bryant dead from a helicopter crash.”

I immediately closed the app, jumped off the couch and paced around my apartment until I caught my breath.

I then proceeded to open up my twitter account and the first tweet I laid eyes on was from Clippers superstar Paul George that read “stop playing!”

Those were my exact thoughts at the time.

But unfortunately- no gimmick games were being played and the news began to spread very quickly on several news outlets; that one of the world’s biggest icons had gained his wings.

The feeling was gut wrenching, painful, unbelievable, devastating, shocking and horrific.

Until this day, the world is still trying to process the unexpected death of basketball legend Kobe Bryant. As days continue to move forward, there are no words to describe the pain that 85 percent of the world is experiencing right now.

Bryant was more than athlete. He was someone the entire world connected to for inspiration, drive, motivation, confidence, advice and more importantly, the advice on basketball. It’s hard to fathom the death of the retired shooting guard who was passionately beloved by so many people globally.

As I begin to go down memory lane, tears are falling from my eyes and my body feels numb. If you are a Los Angeles native- you can definitely relate to the indescribable agony flowing through my mind.

Bryant entered the league at the age of eighteen and was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets who agreed to trade him to the Lakers in exchange for veteran Vlade Divac. Ironically his first points were scored in Charlotte. His first Lakers home game in Inglewood at the Forum.

Fans wasted no time welcoming the basketball God with opening hands.

He quickly emerged from a player to superstar within two years.

Over the next 20 years, Bryant displayed his jaw dropping moves and plays on court. During those two decades, Bryant racked up some unforgettable accolades. He made 18 All-Star appearances, a regular season Most Valuable Player award, five championship rings, two finals MVP awards and two Olympic gold medals.

In fact, life was equally even as a full-time dad and coach. Bryant took pride in coaching his daughter basketball team. He recently shared a touching story on his Instagram. The team he coached (the Mambas) lost the championship game 22-21 in 2017.

Fast forward, the Mambas played that same team in 2019, winning 115-27.

The coach, dad and basketball mentor left a motivational speech on his social media after the victory.

“Here’s our fourth place “winners” picture lol six of the kids in the picture stayed with me and worked every single day to get better and continue to work this day, said Bryant. The 7th player (not in pic) missed the game for a dance recital so that should tell you where her focus was at this time, meaning she enjoyed dance more than ball which is fine. Now? She eats sleeps and breaths the game. So, from the original group of 7 we have added a player TWO years YOUNGER (6th grade now), a player whose team in our area folded and a player whose family moved here from Tennessee.

The beauty of coaching is growing the players from the ground up. That journey continues.”

His message prompted the Orlando Magic guard Isaiah Thomas and nearly 3,000 users to leave a message under the post. Thomas wrote “the goat!!!! In every possible killa.”

With that said, the 41-year-old was enjoying life after basketball and had so much more to give before departing from this earth. The good thing is, he left the blueprint to the Mamba Mentality and it won’t cost you a penny.

The only thing you need to do is implement it in your work ethic and you are destined to become a better version of yourself.

I can go on and on about Bryant’s legacy and life but it is too enormous to fit in one newspaper.

Mamba out. . . Rest in paradise Kobe. You will truly be missed.
