Clippers owner Steve Ballmer needed only to look a few seats down from where Rivers was sitting to find his successor in Tyronn Lue, a brilliant basketball mind who led the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first and only NBA title in 2016.

Lue, a disciple of Phil Jackson, essentially turned down the Lakers job when the front office tried to force a staff on him. He was hired by the Clippers to work with Rivers as they did previously in Boston.

This time it didn’t work out, but for Lue things turned out well. He was named the Clippers coach amid the four year transition before they come to Inglewood.

Critical Race Theory and the Whitewashing of America

It was not enough that 47 states have introduced over 500 bills that will limit the time, places and rights to vote in America, as well as allow states to change voter results in those elections that Republican legislatures “feel” had fraud. Without the recent attack on “Critical Race Theory”, it would be possible, for years to come, to show how a racist right wing White America abolished the voting rights of millions of Americans, many of whom happened to be people of color.

What is now being called “critical race theory” is not new. It is the very fabric of a legal system which has passed laws for over 100 years, based on limiting the rights of people based on race. It was the essence of the effort in the framing of the U.S. Constitution to count slaves as a fraction of a person rather than as a total human being. Race theory was behind the passage of the 13th,14th, and 15th amendments to the U.S. Constitution in order to ensure that “all people are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights.” It took those amendments to include all people, regardless of race, just as it did with the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Acts of 1965. These legislative and legal

acts certainly had race as the basis of the push for equality.

The present attack on the concept of critical race theory is another attempt by the same people who brought us Juneteenth as a Federal holiday: to wipe out future discussion of race in our educational institutions. Such an effort in just a short period of time would mean, for example, there could be no discussion of the Tulsa, Oklahoma massacre which many are just learning about 100 years after the fact. There would be no discussion in our schools about Sand Creek or Wounded Knee and the slaughter of countless Native Americans, or the imprisonment of thousands of Japanese Americans during World War II after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and we dropped the atomic bomb on the Japanese - but not on the Germans.

If legislatures and school boards can be successful with the abolishment of discussions of race by placing all such discussions under the label “critical race theory”, then we move closer to returning to the America of Jim Crow racism and possibly the apartheid that

gripped South Africa with all the horror that came with it.

We as people of color must come off of recess. We must now sleep at attention and prepare to fight on a daily basis with all our thought processes and collective numbers. We must read, watch, prepare to march, speak up and stand; as we did during the civil rights movement which brought us to the limited freedoms of today, but not full equality, yet.

Take a look at where you live. Take a look at what is being done to people who look like you and those who agree with you, regardless of their color. Register to vote and get others registered. Check the voting records that are being purged and re-register those who are still living. Look at how you are spending your dollars and learn from the Atlanta, Georgia example of going after those corporate entities that support elected officials, corporations who finance the very people pushing voter suppression and the abolishment of critical race theory. This must be a daily battle with no time outs.

Inglewood City Council Summary

The weekly Inglewood City Council Meetings have been very brief over the last several weeks as the council members swiftly discharge the business on the agenda. At the same time, Inglewood residents have not been permitted to attend the council meetings because of the restrictions imposed

by COVID-19, but have been allowed to call in to participate in the meeting by telephone or by submitting their questions and concerns in advance to the City Clerk. Interested persons are also able to view the actual meetings on

cable television.

This week the council approved Amendment Five of the Elderly Nutrition Program Services Subaward Number ENP202107 with County of Los Angeles Workforce Development Aging and Community Services (WDACS) to reallocate baseline grant funding for provision of the Elderly Nutrition Program (ENP), with payment provided by the Grants Fund.

The council set a public hearing be set to consider an ordinance to amend Inglewood Municipal Code Chapters 10 (Public Works) and 12 (Planning and Zoning) including Zoning Code Amendment (ZCA-2021-002) to modify signage regulations for Banners in the Public Right of Way, citywide.

City of Inglewood Juneteenth

Juneteenth Celebrations took on a special meaning this year because it was announced that beginning in 2022, Juneteenth will become a National Holiday. Wondaland celebrated bo concucting a contact-free food and supplies giveaway on June 19, at Middle School, across from the Inglewood City Hall building.

The drive-thru event, manned by a bevy of volunteers, featured contactfree prepared meals, fresh fruit and vegetables, canned meat, vegetables and fruit, hand sanitizer, grocery boxes, and toys for young boys and girls.

Many Los Angeles Black-owned bookstores stayed afloat through the worst of the pandemic– intentional community support is a huge reason why

For the past 15 months in the trenches of a pandemic, most nonessential businesses have been in for a tough fight of survival. But as people all over the world were forced to remain still– and at home– two things remained to fill the empty void: television and books.

During the extended period at home, many people dove into novels and even nonfiction, historic texts– especially during the world-wide racial reckoning that took place in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. After May 25, the day of the senseless murder, books about race were flying off of shelves everywhere.

This eagerness for education, understanding, and allyship during one of the toughest and most unfortunate events in modern American times certainly played a part in keeping many bookstores afloat while so many other retail businesses were folding.

Malik Muhammad is the owner of ‘Malik Books’ in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw mall. He shifted his business model during those times to cater to home deliveries. After targeting customers to the company website via social media, Muhammad made it easy to place orders online. And once the orders began flowing in, he turned the experience into a family-affair with his spouse and children. “We made the deliveries as a family, that was the way

we got out of the house during the pandemic.

We went around and did contact deliveries to people if they were local,” says Muhammad.

But even aside from the online book orders, Muhammad also credits the influx of cash donations that came in from community members.

“Between the website and the community’s donations, that’s how we survived the pandemic. If it wasn’t for the people who helped support Malik’s during this time, I don’t even know if Malik’s would be here.”

As grateful and excited as Muhammad is for his bookstore to have made it through to the other end of the pandemic, as restrictions are now lifting in Southern California it’s hard not to notice the slow pace of the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw mall, where the store is located. Foot traffic is low as of now, but his fingers are crossed that things pick up as more and more people return to their leisurely activities of day-to-day life.

Jazzi McGilbert, Owner of ‘Reparations Club’ near the corner of Crenshaw Boulevard and Jefferson Boulevard, did not have an online store at all before March 2020. “We flipped the switch on pretty quickly and let our community know that we were closed,

and people really rallied behind us.”

McGilbert also implemented a home delivery service to those who lived within a certain mile radius.

But for Reparations Club, things are quickly headed toward business as usual. McGilbert was then preparing for the first event at her bookstore since the pandemic began. In a matter of hours, a bright-eyed, zealous crowd would soon fill the store as writer, producer and comedian Quinta Brunson would be holding an author talk and book signing.

McGilbert knows that even though most people are thrilled to live full lives again, it will still be a step-by-step climb back to the old times of events and gatherings. She considered this night as an opportunity to test the waters. “We’re expecting a good turn out, but we’re going to wait and see how this one goes before we plan some more. But we are planning more!” says McGilbert.

Not only did Black-owned bookstores survive the pandemic, but also a new one is being born. In downtown Inglewood on Queen Street, Asha Grant will be opening ‘The Salt Eaters Bookshop’ after a successful GoFundMe campaign in 2020. Grant received an outpour of financial contributions from people all over the world, catapulting her dream into reality.

The Salt Eaters is expected to open this year.

Each bookstore success story has the common denominator of community support– customers and readers making it a priority to uplift these businesses and not allow them to fall through the cracks. When it comes to books and storytelling, Black stories that are told

by Black people are imperative, and it seems as though most people agree.

Exercise can be therapeutic, ‘RideWitUs LA’ Founder Kellie Hart proves it

Kellie Hart’s bicycle shop on Slauson Avenue is actually much more than simply a store where one would walk in, buy a bike, and leave. While that is certainly an option, Hart’s vision and purpose is much more.

In 2020, while gyms closed in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Kellie Hart found a healthy outlet to where she could channel her energy: pandemic-safe, outdoor bike rides. It began with her calling up friends on the phone– “Hey, get up, let’s go ride,” – is all the convincing she needed to do.

Like clockwork, the then-small group would meet up and ride their bikes.

“Honestly, I was following a calling. We just kept riding. It was the consistency and just being in tune with the people who were coming to ride with us, and why they wanted to come.”

It turns out Kellie Hart, Los Angeles native and Westchester High School graduate, wasn’t the only one who needed an outlet during the turbulent times of a pandemic. As a former Continued on page 6

Sports & Entertainment Carl Nassib makes history this Pride Month

The timing was crucial as Carl Nassib, a defensive lineman for the Las Vegas Raiders, made history as the first active openly gay NFL player. On June 21, Nassib posted a video accompanied with a statement, a culmination of only the warmth and acceptance of June, the month of Pride.

“I just want to take a quick moment to say that I’m gay,” Nassib announced on a post made from his Instagram.

“I just think that representation and visibility are so important. I actually hope that one day videos like this and the whole coming-out process are just not necessary, but until then I’m going

to do my best and my part to cultivate a culture that’s accepting, that’s compassionate.”

After Nassib publicly came out, he was met with waves of support ranging from his current team to the top of the NFL franchise. The following day NFL made its own Instagram post declaring its support of Nassib and matching his $100,000 donation to The Trevor Project, an organization that focuses on LGBTQ youth. To be greeted so warmly and with open arms is something most professional athletes are unsure they will receive if they took the same step as Nassib. Living under the public eye is one of the side effects of being

on a professional level in sports. With that comes an overwhelming sense of intrusion into private lives and leads to speculations of private things such as sexual orientation.

As Nassib enters into his sixth season in the NFL and second with the Raiders, his role as a difference-maker in the sports world still ultimately boils down to time. Today’s social climate and even sports climate are constantly transitioning and pushing the boundaries of what is deemed the “normal.” If you look back to 2013, a huge year for the LGBTQ community in regards to sports. All in the same year months apart, Michael Sam, Jason

Collins and Robbie Rogers publicly came out as gay. While all three athletes received support, none came close to the feeling of coming out in a much more progressed time as Nassib did. Despite having trailblazers who have come before him and the coming out process- yes it is a process - is one that never gets any easier, especially in an environment like sports where being gay is taboo.

“Sadly, I have agonized over this moment for the last 15 years,” Nassib continued in his post. “I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now but, I finally feel comfortable enough to get it off of my chest.”

The sports environment has begun to step by step tackle social issues, taboos, and things many people think might have nothing to do with sports. From racism to gender equality to sexual orientation, if you thought that turning the channel to ESPN meant escaping those things think again. Nassib’s push for awareness and acceptance has been long overdue not only in the NFL but in the sports world in general.

Pride months are usually filled with courageous acts and this June Nassib etched his name in history. He is the first of hopefully more professional football players to decide to open up this part of their lives to the world as there is strength in numbers.

“Lastly, I hope everyone can understand that I am just one person,” Nassib said in the final slide of his post.

“I am a lanky walk-on who is living his dream. I only have a small window to achieve greatness in my sport and I owe it to my team, coaches, and Raider fans to be completely locked in and at my best for the upcoming season.”

Inglewood’s ‘La Create Space’ is connecting Black creators creatives– can find inspiration and an outlet for networking.

Terrell and Marisa Johnson, both San Jose State graduates and co-founders of La Create Space, have been navigating the tech industry for years.

Mr. Johnson currently works for Facebook as a Video Infrastructure and Collaboration Engineer. He also has experience in the engineering departments of Snapchat, Cisco Systems, and Applied Materials.

basketball player in both high school and college, she was no stranger to the many benefits of physical activity. But after just a few rides, others were also taking note of the positive impact the rides were making in their own lives.

Riders began to express how beneficial the meet-ups had grown to be, and demanded more.

While bicycling through the streets of Los Angeles with this core group, riders found peace of mind, relief of PTSD, and it even helped some cope with abusive relationships and other hardships.

What began as a small group of about six friends and acquaintances meeting for bike rides, has now grown to average about 90 riders each meetup. On some occasions, 150 riders.

And not only that, but ‘RideWitUs LA’ now has a storefront location, which is the starting point of each ride. Rides take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and routes can vary depending on traffic, generally lasting anywhere between 3-5 hours with social stops throughout, such as restaurants and parking lot hangouts.

Hart’s storefront seems to be the ideal location for a bike club. It’s conveniently in the middle of a large, spacious parking lot– perfect for the rapidly-growing club.

“This space– I call this my blessing from God.” Hart recalls that two years ago she tried to purchase this exact space, but for a car wash business that she was considering starting. Real

estate pricing was higher than she was hoping for at the time, leaving her unable to buy. But two years later, in a full-circle moment, the opportunity arose for her to sign a lease agreement.

And there you have it: RideWitUs LA! With the group continuously growing, when it comes to leadership out on the road, Hart is fortunate enough to have plenty of help: The ‘Supa 7’.

Made up of Darrnell, Derrick, Kam, Kellie, Mike, Rich, and Tone, The Supa 7 are the crowned leaders of the rides.

Operating like a well-oiled machine, each leader knows and is committed to their role out on the road. They’re the core seven who have been there since the beginning of the RideWitUs LA journey.

Curious as to how seven people are able to smoothly be in charge without personality clashes, drama, or just petty disagreements, I asked Hart to elaborate on how it manages to work with seven people in a leadership position, the answer was admirably simple: “It’s not about the role, always about the goal.”

Having already dispatched the Dallas Mavericks and the top seed Utah Jazz, the Clips are taking aim at the Suns without the services of arguably their best player Kawhi Leonard who is nursing a suspicious knee injury.

I say suspicious because no one is giving a timeline on his return signaling it could be more serious than indicated.

Leonard has not play at all in this series first two games which the Clips lost and trail 0-2 in the best of seven series.

They will come home on June 24 for game three in a must win situation.

Paul George stepped up in Leonard absence in the Utah series and has been a rock against the Suns which is without star guard Chris Paul (COVID protocol), but his two missed free throws in the waning seconds of game two were a killer in a game the Clippers lost by a point with less than a second remaining.

This team is like a box of Cracker Jacks you don’t know what you’re going to get from one night to the next, or for that matter who your star will be. It could be sharpshooting Reggie Jackson, or fresh faced 2019 second round draft pick Terance Mann, perhaps lefty dead eye marksman Luke Kennard, steely veteran Marcus Morris or George.

The one sure bet is Tyronn Lue will match schemes with Suns pilot Monty Williams and make every necessary adjustment he can to put the Clippers in position to win and advance to their first NBA Finals.

and rescues often have two adult cats who have grown up together and would be happy to go home together. It’s heartwarming to see a pair of cats who are already friends get to stay together.

And while you’re away, they’ll have each other for company and security.

Extroverts need love, too: If you are home quite often, then you’ll have more time to play with an active kitty who needs lots of wand toy play time.

Some cats can even be trained to walk on a leash or go for stroller rides.

Consider a solo artist: There are many cats who are great with people but terrified of other cats. They don’t always make a great first impression on potential adopters, especially if they’re in a shelter surrounded by other cats.

But once they’re in a home with you, they’ll flourish.

Involve the whole family: It’s important to take everyone in the home, especially children, to meet all prospective cats so you can observe how they interact with the cat. Every child has their own unique energy, and every pet reacts differently to every child.

Keep an open mind: Don’t get hung up on color, sex or age. Not all cats’ personalities fit into stereotypes. Every cat is an individual, so don’t discount a cat because they aren’t male or female or orange or fluffy. By doing so, you’ll have the best odds of finding a great match.

“Talk to the staff and volunteers at the shelter about your lifestyle. Let them know if you live with others, including any pets, as well as who/ what you come in contact with on a regular basis, and let them guide you to the cats that they think would mesh well with your life,” Bell said.

With kitten season in full swing, many people will be tempted to adopt one (and let’s be honest, it’s hard not to succumb to that level of cuteness). But as Bell noted, kittens require an extra

level of care.

“Kittens are adorable but be aware that they are more work than an adult cat. Kittens need to be fed more often and use the litter box much more often,” she said. “Single kittens need lots of positive reinforcement training so that they don’t end up being bitey or scratchy adults.”

That is why Best Friends encourages adopters to open their home to a pair of kittens, if possible. Bell explained why. “All cats have to bite and scratch; it’s feline instinct,” she said. “A pair of kittens learns that biting and scratching is something they should do to each other during playtime, and not to their humans.”

“I’m proud to chair this organization,” she told NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., during an extensive discussion inside the trade association’s new state-of-theart television studio and headquarters at the Thurgood Marshall Center in Washington, D.C. “We’ve always known that we are a resilient people, but the pandemic forced a lot of us to take a deep breath because it was new,” Carter Richards continued.

“A lot of us were print publications, but we had to change the game. We took a breath and started doing what we do.

Some of us were already making digital strides, but it was gradual. The pandemic forced us to step it up, and we had a lot of help from the NNPA office, and the publishers helped each other.”

The NNPA represents the hundreds of newspapers and media companies in the Black Press of America family.

From June 23 to June 26, the NNPA will host its national convention.

The convention will feature a special performance by the legendary Grammy winner Chaka Khan and Nu-Soul and Jazz artist Candice Hoyes.

The NNPA will also hand out its prestigious Legacy Awards, including to: •Darnella Frazier, the African American teenager who courageously filmed the police officer kneeling on George Floyd’s neck, will receive the Ida B. Wells National Photojournalism Award.

•The Rev. John P. Kee will receive the 2021 National Gospel Transformative Award

June 24-30 2021 •Earth, Wind & Fire Lead Singer Philip Bailey will be presented with the 2021 National Lifetime Achievement Legacy Award for Outstanding Achievement, Impact, and Creative Genius.

•Scotty Barnhart, the legendary Count Basie Orchestra leader, will receive the 2021 National Performance and Outstanding Leadership Award.

•The Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson will receive the 2021 National Achievement and Outstanding Leadership Award for his work as President and CEO of the Children’s Defense Fund.

•Congresswoman Joyce L. Beatty (D-Ohio) will receive the 2021 National Congressional Leadership Award, and the NNPA will present Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison with the Outstanding and Courageous Leadership Award.

•Chaka Khan will receive the 2021 National Lifetime Achievement Legacy Award for Decades of Creative Genius and Outstanding Leadership for Freedom, Justice, and Equality in American and Throughout the World.

This year marks the second consecutive virtual convention.

During the convention, Carter Richards will seek election to a second successive term as national chair.

While any potential challengers for the position have yet to identify themselves, Carter Richards’ run as chair has proved impressive.

“We are doing better than we’ve done in the history of the NNPA,” she declared.

Despite the pandemic that forced many out of jobs and a topsy-turvy economy where government stimulus served to rescue most, Dr. Chavis said advertising and other revenue skyrocketed for the

Black Press.

Carter Richards credited the national office led by Dr. Chavis, Claudette Perry, the NNPA’s executive administrator, and the staff.

“It feels wonderful to have a great team,” Carter Richards exclaimed.

“I have to give [Dr. Chavis] your due.

You’ve done a great job, and we have a great team at NNPA. We can’t do it without the team.”

She also praised the NNPA’s allwomen executive committee, Janis Ware (The Atlanta Voice), the First Vice-Chair, Fran Farrer (The County News in North Carolina), Second ViceChair, Brenda H. Edwards (New Journal and Guide in Virginia), Treasurer and Jackie Hampton (The Mississippi Link) Secretary.

“I’m loving being with the ladies,” Carter Richards announced. “Black women do what Black women do. We are going to continue to do great things.”

Carter Richards recalled her father’s vision for the Houston Forward Times.

She noted that he began planning for the newspaper five years before its 1955 launch when he returned from serving in the U.S. military.

Julius Carter taught his daughter and her sister the value of community and the Black Press.

His steadfastness for bringing forward hard facts led to the Forward Times building bombing in 1971, just days after he published an article critical of the local police department.

Julius Carter died of a heart attack days later, and his wife, Lenora “Doll” Carter, immediately sprang into action to keep the paper alive.

“They were taking bets that my mom wouldn’t last six months at

the newspaper,” Carter Richards remembered.

“She was 29 years old, with two little girls. But she took the paper to its 50th year. I was terrified because she had a massive heart attack, and she wasn’t even sick. I was next in line, but I was ready because I had shadowed my mother for years.”

“My mother prepared me for a lot of things that have helped me to do what I’m doing now,” Carter Richards said, noting that both her parents once served on the NNPA’s executive committee.

The upcoming convention theme – “Black Press Matters: Trusted Voice, Resilient Vitality, and Transformative Vision” – could not be more appropriate.

“I think we have hit on all of those points. We know we are the trusted voice in the Black community, and ‘resilient vitality’ is who we are,” Carter Richards determined.

“Our Black newspapers have thrived, and so many more are getting to the level that we want them to be. I’m so proud of the Black Press for all the work they are doing in the community and for the work they are doing to help each other.”

She continued: “When I stepped inside this new studio, I was taken aback. It is remarkable. We are on the move, and the Black Press has for 194 years been the trusted voice, and you can say that to the Black community, we are mainstream media. And we are going to continue to give the world information without fear or favor.”
