The superstar’s family confirmed her death in a statement on Wednesday, May 24, noting that Turner died “peacefully” at her home near Zurich, Switzerland.

Tina Turner, the “Queen of Rock ‘n Roll’ whose legend grew after she overcame a bitter divorce to musician Ike Turner that was filled with violence, has died at the age of 83.

The superstar’s family confirmed her death in a statement on Wednesday, May 24, noting that Turner died “peacefully” at her home near Zurich, Switzerland.

“Starting with her performances with her ex-husband Ike, Turner injected an uninhibited, volcanic stage presence into pop,” Rolling Stone’s Brittany Spanos declared in a tribute.

“Even with choreographed backup singers — both with Ike and during her own career — Turner never seemed to reign in,” Spanos, who co-authored the tribute with David Browne, asserted.

“Her influence on rock, R&B and soul singing and performance was also immeasurable.

“Her delivery influenced everyone from Mick Jagger to Mary J. Blige, and her high-energy stage presence (topped with an array of gravity-defying wigs) was passed down to Janet Jackson and Beyoncé.

“Turner’s message — one that resounded with generations of women — was that she could hold her own onstage against any man.”

Born Anna Mae Bullock in Tennessee in 1939, Turner started her career in 1958 as the lead singer for Ike Turner

and his Kings of Rhythm band.

Later, the couple changed the name to the Ike & Tina Revue and spun out hit after hit with songs like “Nutbush City Limits,” “River Deep,” and the seminal “Proud Mary.”

Following a tumultuous and abusive relationship, Tina escaped from Ike’s clutches in 1976 with no money and just the clothes on her back that reportedly were bloodied following Ike’s latest assault.

During divorce proceedings, Tina simply demanded that she keep her stage name which the judge granted.

With assistance from rock stars like Mick Jagger and David Bowie, Turner rebounded several years later and topped the pop music charts with her

1984 solo album, Private Dancer.

The album included a bevy of hit singles, including a remake of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together,” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” which became the title of her successful 1993 biopic starring Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne.

She then enjoyed the starring role alongside Mel Gibson in the 1995 movie, “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.” In 1986, Tina wrote her memoir, “I, Tina,” which writers used to create the film, What’s Love Got to Do With It.”

Over her career, Turner earned 11 Grammy Awards, and sold an estimated 180 million records globally.

In 2001, Turner earned induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and, in

2008, after having taken a hiatus from performing, toured the world for her 50th anniversary in show business.

“Heaven has gained an angel,” singer Ciara tweeted.

“Thank you for the inspiration you gave us all.”

The Defender Network’s Twitter account praised Turner as “an unstoppable musical force who exuded grace and resilience. “

And hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash said Turner would be missed.

“My condolences to the Turner family,” Flash said. “Rest in peace Tina Turner you will be missed.”

Centinela Hospital Medical Center Enhances Emergency Room Experience

GetCareNow, a new program offered by Centinela Hospital Medical Center, is offering members of the community an enhanced emergency room experience, furthering its mission to provide the very best care to communities where and when they need it.

The Centinela Hospital Emergency Department now offers GetCareNow, which is technology that allows patients to reserve an appointment via the hospital’s main webpage to be seen in the Emergency Room, ER. Patients fill out a brief, secure form, and no username or password is required. The tool can notify the patient if there is a change that may extend the wait time, and a notification can even be sent if there has been a reduction in surge to encourage an earlier arrival time. Importantly, GetCareNow is intended only for non-life or limb-threatening emergencies. In a life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately.

The easy-to-use tool provides added convenience for those with non-lifethreatening emergent needs. While appointments cannot be explicitly guaranteed due to the variable nature of an emergency department, the tool still allows patients insight into current wait times and increases communication through the notification features.

“Our priority is to ensure patients receive high-quality, safe care where and when they need it,” said Mohammad A. Naser, CEO of Centinela Hospital Medical Center. “I am thrilled to bring a resource to our region that enhances communication, improves transparency, and gives our clinical team additional insight along critical stages of the prehospital care continuum.”

GetCareNow is one of many exciting features on the newly designed Centinela Hospital website. The updated website offers a modernized presence and supports the digital

patient journey across all care settings. With “Action Buttons” featured on every page, patients can easily find a doctor, schedule appointments, contact us, and get directions. In addition, there are customized menus for patients, providers, job seekers, and visitors. Platform capabilities include a 24/7 chatbot, patient prep instructions, patient e-registration, secure messaging, post-visit virtual check-ins, and patient feedback and reviews. Collectively, these serve to improve communication, care coordination, and the experience for patients, physicians, and staff.

Additionally, Centinela Hospital recently earned accreditation as a Geriatric Emergency Department by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). This accreditation recognizes that Centinela Hospital is focused on the highest standards of emergency care for older adults. The Centinela Emergency Department offers seniors a more

comfortable physical environment and clinical best practices that address their unique needs. Centinela Hospital is one of the highest rated hospitals for clinical excellence in the Los Angeles region. The hospital recently received an “A” rating in hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group.

This achievement marks the 10th straight ‘A’ that Centinela Hospital has earned since 2018.

Centinela Hospital was also recognized on the 2022 Fortune/ Merative Top 100 Hospitals® list for the sixth time as one of the top-performing community hospitals in the nation. Earlier this year, Centinela Hospital was recognized by Healthgrades as a 2023 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient. This distinction places Centinela Hospital among the top five percent of all short-term acute care hospitals as evaluated by Healthgrades. This is the ninth year that Centinela Hospital has achieved this prestigious recognition.

A recent survey of likely March 2024 primary voters in California’s 35th State Senate District conducted

by Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates (FM3 Research) shows former Congresswoman Laura Richardson to be a strong contender for this open seat.

“The survey found Richardson’s favorability rating to be similar to or better than most current and former elected officials with experience representing communities within the 35th Senate District and better than candidates expressing interest but have not served higher than the local office,” said John Fairbanks.

Richardson was born in Los Angeles and lives in San Pedro. She was raised by a single mother after her parents divorced when she was two. Her mother was a member of the Teamsters and remains a retiree today. Laura graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles, and earned her MBA from the University of Southern

California’s Marshall School of Business.

Richardson served on the Long Beach City Council from 2000 to 2006, and while serving in the Assembly in 2007 after the untimely passing of Congresswoman Juanita Millender McDonald, she was elected to the House of Representatives, representing District 37, where she served three terms before redistricting significantly altered California’s congressional map, resulting in the loss of African American representation for the first time in decades.

“In our hypothetical ballot tests, Laura Richardson led initially and after voters were provided information about the backgrounds of several candidates,” added Fairbanks. “Richardson’s commitment to addressing local residents’ concerns on a range of issues, including jobs, wages and benefits, the economy,

affordable housing, access to quality healthcare, public safety, and criminal justice reform, resonates strongly with voters. Furthermore, her background with communitybased organizations, her experience as a business leader, and her public service record are very appealing to voters.”

Senate District 35 includes the Los Angeles County communities of LAX, Inglewood, Compton, Carson, Hawthorne, Lawndale, Gardena, Harbor Gateway, Wilmington, San Pedro, and unincorporated communities of East and West Rancho Dominguez, Lennox, West Athens, Westmont, and Willowbrook. The election will take place on March 5, 2024.

Dulan’s Rules Soul Food Family-owned restaurant chain is Inglewood favorite

The original Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen in Inglewood was launched by the patriarch of the Dulan brothers, Terry and Craig, in 2001, at the age of 40, when he took a leap of faith into the restaurant business. He opened the second location in Los Angeles on Century Boulevard in 2012, and the Los Angeles Century Blvd. location in 2012. 45 years later they are still going strong with three restaurants in what they describe as a family-owned restaurant chain.

All three Dulan’s restaurants are essentially the same, offering the same menu. One difference is in their catering offerings with the Manchester and Century locations providing catering for up to 300 to 400 people.

Brother Greg’s restaurant on Crenshaw Boulevard, slated to officially open in August following a major beautiful renovation, will feature a wider range of catering offerings to numbers in the thousands. For example, they fed 3,800 and 1,500 construction workers at the SoFi Stadium and Intuit Dome, respectively. When and if necessary, all restaurants collaborate to help each other.

The Manchester location has hosted several private events offering beer and wine with small plates and buffet options in their newly acquired dining area and event space, adjacent to the food preparation area. They recently hosted a fundraiser for Heather Hutt with local VIP’s and several government and elected officials in attendance.

The brothers ascribe the success upon which they continue to grow and flourish to their father. “My father’s secret first and foremost was to make delicious fresh soul food served in abundance.” Terry said. Every morning they cut mountains of collard greens and peel boxes of yams in the old school way for our customers. Their father was able to draw upon his 30 plus years of experience with one of the original soul food restaurants in Los Angeles, the famous Aunt Kizzy’s Back Porch in Marina Del Rey.

That experience provided a strong foundation in making delicious food. The family grew up as a restaurant family and the brothers started working in the family business at an early age. Another lesson the brothers gleaned from their father was the idea of giving back to the communities they serve by making donations to churches, schools, and individuals. They continue this tradition, often giving back to the community to keep the legacy their father established. “We believe that in some way. giving will always come back to you somehow.” he said.

Dulan’s has earned numerous awards

and are currently nominated for the prestigious James Beard award which will be announced on June 5th for

outstanding restauranteur. They have also received the: The Los Angeles Times Top 100 restaurants two years in

a row, Thrillist Magazine top 10 in the USA, Eater Magazine top Soul Food, and Conde Naste Traveler, top places near SoFi Stadium, to name only a few. The family-owned restaurant chain is also frequently featured on local news programs and was proud to garner a spot on, Good Morning America during the Superbowl.

“The economic development in the City of Inglewood has helped for sure,” Terry said. “We see an influx of new customers from the Forum and SoFi Stadium during the various events, but it is our loyal customer base that continues to sustain the business. Hopefully, the future events, like the Olympics, will ensure local businesses get more representation.”

The brothers enjoy ongoing relationships with SoFi Stadium and the Intuit Dome. They fed 3,800 workers during the construction of SoFi stadium, and they are a Rams House restaurant, a program the Rams launched to help support minority-owned restaurants in the area. The Rams came to the restaurant and presented the owners with a signed jersey and handed out T-shirts for the staff. Similarly, they fed 1500 workers during the Intuit Dome Topping Off Ceremony. attended by the Los Angeles Clippers owner, Steve Balmer, Clippers players and Inglewood Dignitaries. In addition, the Clippers brought Bones Hyland to the restaurant for a promotional video which was displayed at several games, and the brothers were recognized at halftime of a game during Black History Month.

The restaurants offer specials that keep new and repeat clients coming back for more. Every day the restaurants offer lunch specials at a lower price which ends at 4 p.m. For the price of an omelet at many breakfast establishments they offer you get an entrée with freshly made greens, yams, mac n cheese, and cornbread, all made from scratch.

Jim Brown was Our most Consequential Athlete Rudolph “Rockhead” Johnson is living proof

Kareem Abdul Jabbar remains from that revolutionary meeting on June 4 1967 in Cleveland, Ohio when Jim Brown organized The Cleveland Summit in support of Muhammad Ali’s refusal to accept being drafted for the Vietnam War.

We lost Bill Russell, the Celtic great in 2022 and Ali died in 2016.

It was moment indelibly chronicled in the history of America, where a group of Black star athletes used their platform to challenge a system of white superiority and injustice towards Blacks.

When James Nathaniel Brown decided to lead that meeting in a town where he became the greatest football player in the history of the game, at the height of his post career popularity and just when launching his next chapter as an actor, it was most indicative of how this man would live the rest of his life.

Never again would he be just one singular thing, confined to one ideal box. No longer would he be just the All American football and Lacrosse phenom at Syracuse University, or the just most enduring running back in the NFL where after just 9 seasons, 3 MVPs, 9 Pro Bowls, 12,312 yards and 106 touchdowns later they still debate how much greater he could have been had he played longer.

No…No…No… Jim Brown would not be confined to Hollywood where he was among the first real Black leading men in the industry, considered as the Black Superman, Black folks John Wayne.

This native of St. Simons Island, Georgia, which became the center of cotton production during that era, would go on to become the most respected athlete, noble activist and advocate for the culture of Blackness we would ever know.

He would go from cotton picking Georgia to the city that never sleeps, New York where he starred at Manhasset High School before Syracuse (19541956) and then being drafted by the Cleveland Browns at No. 6 in the first round of the 1957 draft, a class that is steep with Hall of Fame inductees.

Brown even co promoted a boxing event with legendary promoter and fellow Clevelander Don King during his life.

“Jim Brown was a dear friend not only was he great, par excellent in the game of football but also in the game of life. He was one of my co-promoters on one of my events, and I love the man. My sympathy and deepest condolences to all the family,” King said.

When Brown died of natural causes at the age of 87 on May 18, 2023, at his home in Los Angeles, the pulsating world of sports held their collective breaths.

Tributes poured in, with former NFL running back Barry Sanders posting on Twitter that “You can’t underestimate the impact Jim Brown had on the NFL.” Emmitt Smith, the NFL’s alltime leader in rushing yards, wrote “He

is and was a true legend in sports and in the community using his platform to help others.” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said “Jim Brown was a gifted athlete — one of the most dominant players to ever step on any athletic field — but also a cultural figure who helped promote change.” LeBron James, an NBA star, wrote in tribute that “We lost a hero today. Rest in Paradise to the legend Jim Brown. I hope every Black athlete takes the time to educate themselves about this incredible man and what he did to change all of our lives. We all stand on your shoulders Jim Brown.” Barack Obama, the 44th president and the first Black president of the United States, wrote, “I was too young to remember Jim Brown’s playing days, but I knew his legacy. One of the greatest football players ever, he was also an actor and activist – speaking out on civil rights, and pushing other black athletes to do the same.

Here in Southern California, there was no one who knew Jim Brown as well and was impacted by him so

immensely as Rockhead.

That is Rudolph (Rockhead) Johnson, a former gang member who became like a son to Brown and serves as the founder of I-Can All Stars, a non-profit organization.

The organization was born out of Brown’s own Ameri-I-Can Foundation, the gang-intervention program that has rescued thousands of young men and women from the streets.

“Jim Brown saved my life,” said Johnson.

After Brown’s death, Johnson posted a solemn message on his Facebook page.

“The man who gave me the strength to become the man I am today. My pops My mentor my friend. I’m going to miss you big fella !! And I’m gonna do everything I possibly can to keep your vision going.!! There is so much more I can say but I’m going to keep it short. I miss you already and there is no love grater then the Love I have for you Thank you for saving and giving me life your son.”

That was Jim Brown.

No without his flaws. Raw and unapologetically Black.

What’s Up with Anuolu

Slow Down

Welcome back to “What’s Up with Anuolu.” This week’s column is about taking everything day by day. Sometimes, we can get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that we forget to slow down and enjoy all the beauty that surrounds us. Slowing down may seem so counterproductive in a hustle culture, but it’s so important to take the time to relax, sleep, and get some rest. The older I get; I understand that rest is just as important as the work I do every day. Life can get overwhelming. I can begin to feel overworked; my limbs can begin to feel run down. I know we have goals and dreams that we are all pursuing, but how can we enjoy it if we continue to neglect our health?

That’s what I’ve been dealing with these past couple of weeks. Feeling forced to relax and sit down even though I had so many plans, and so many things to get done off my todo list, I was fortunate to be able to sit and just do nothing besides enjoy the present. I usually am so worried about tomorrow and how I must get ready and prepare. However, just living in the moment and enjoying the present really does put into perspective what is truly important in life. All we really have are these moments. It would be heartbreaking to get to a place in life where I am regretful and resentful for all the things I didn’t do, and all the time I didn’t waste.

So, after taking a couple of weeks to figure out my new normal, and adjust to the present, and stop harping over the future, I see the importance and beauty of rest. I thought it was important to share because rest has become a thing that I feel society has made us believe

makes us weak. We are taught that rest is for the rich and those that are successful. When in fact rest is for us all, there is no way to truly be at 100 percent capacity when you are tired, sluggish, and overworked.

In addition, I can get caught up in wanting to see instant results for the work I put in. But I’m learning that the best rewards usually come with time and patience. I’ve been putting in a lot of work behind the scenes and doing a lot of things to build myself and my resume. So, sometimes, I feel like I want to see the results now, but

I remember that I’m getting practice and building myself. I now have more and better products to show for it. Failures mean another opportunity to approach or do something better than before. Realizing that a lot of what I want is in changing my mentality and attitude toward the way I feel about them. Because to be honest I am a way better writer now than I ever was, and the exciting part about it is that I can only get better. So, I wanted to use this week’s column to remind everybody to calm down, take a walk, take a deep

breath and know that we are exactly where we are supposed to be. We are only getting better and preparing for those moments that we have always dreamed of. There is no need to overwork ourselves to prove to anyone our worth or why we deserve what we dream. You cannot enjoy life, your success, and your money if you are dead. So slow down and enjoy these moments that remind us to be grateful that we are alive.
