A Handful of 99 Cent Only Stores Finds a Buyer
Dailymail.com reports that almost a dozen 99 Cents Only stores have been saved from closure by a rival.
Ollie’s Bargain Outlet has stepped in to buy 11 shops from the now-bankrupt company, and they will open under new branding after the old stores finally shut in early June. The US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware approved the purchase for $14.6 million in cash last week.
The 99 Cents Only Stores announced on April 4 that it would shutter all 371 locations, blaming inflation and rising theft as the chief culprits.
So far, the only stores to be spared are in Texas.
The popular discount chain had stores in California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Ninety-nine Cents Only Stores are due to close officially next month.
Meanwhile, Mark Miller,
former president of Big Lots, is hoping to acquire 143 stores in California. Miller has reportedly put together a group of investors, and said he has a bankruptcy attorney in “constant communication” with all parties.
“I think we’re in as good a position as anybody to take a piece of these 143 stores,” Miller said.
The 99 Cents Only franchise is one of several retailers facing massive closures in 2024.
Dollar and budget stores have had a rough year. While all shops are struggling to keep up with inflation, it affects value retailers worst due to their already-tight margins.
Dollar Tree said last month it was
raising the maximum price cap on its goods to $7.
The company also owns Family Dollar, and plans to shutter nearly 1,000 of those—600 this year and the rest when leases end.

House Bill Passes to Rename Federal Courthouse After Latino Family
Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed U.S. Rep. Jimmy Gomez’s (CA-34) bipartisan legislation to name the Los Angeles U.S. Courthouse after Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez, American civil rights icons.
The Mendez family helped change the course of U.S. history almost eight decades ago after their daughter wasn’t allowed to enroll in her neighborhood school that was only for white children. They brought a lawsuit that ended
unconstitutional.
Gomez’s bill would be a historic first, as the Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez United States Courthouse would be the first federal courthouse named after a Latina out of over 200 named federal courthouses in the U.S. The courthouse sits just blocks from where the historic Mendez case was originally decided.
on their vision for a more equal society for their children, where the color of someone’s skin doesn’t determine their access to education. I am eager to see Congressman Gomez’s bill pass the Senate to preserve this important piece of history.”
by the federal government, was willing to lease farmland to them.
school segregation in California in 1947.
The Mendez’s activism, alongside the Ramirez, Estrada, Guzman and Palomino families, culminated in the landmark case that led to the end of segregation in California schools. Thurgood Marshall wrote the NAACP’s amicus brief in the case, and just years later used the Mendez case as a blueprint for the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education landmark ruling, which found segregation in public schools
“Today we took a historic step in honoring the history of civil rights in Los Angeles and across the nation by passing legislation to name the Los Angeles U.S. Courthouse after civil rights icons Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez,” said Rep. Gomez.
The Mendez family’s legal plight began after Sylvia was denied enrollment at her Westminster neighborhood school.
As a 9-year-old third grader at the time, she wanted to attend the “beautiful school” with the “nice playground,” not
“I thank CAPAC Executive Member Rep. Gomez for his leadership to have Congress highlight how intertwined our stories and fights for justice and equality are and recognize the significance of the Mendez v. Westminster case to California’s and America’s civil rights history,” said Rep. Judy Chu (CA28), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.
“What an immense honor that the House passed Congressman Jimmy Gomez’s bill to memorialize the work of my parents and all the families involved in this case by naming the Los Angeles US courthouse after them,” said Sylvia Mendez, whose education was at the heart of the landmark Mendez v. Westminster case.
“My parents and the four other families in this case refused to give up
understanding that she couldn’t because it was reserved for white children only. Instead, Latino children like her were forced to attend the “Mexican school” in a rundown building next to a cow pasture. The conditions there were terrible, she recalled in an interview with NBC News in 2021.
The Mendez family relocated to Westminster because the Japanese American Munemitsu family, who were themselves tragically experiencing the injustice of World War II incarceration
“Decades after Brown v. Board of Education and Mendez v. Westminster, the fight for equality in education continues,” said Rep. Steven Horsford (NV-04), Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. “Honoring Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez by naming the Los Angeles US Courthouse after them takes a step to rectify past injustices and will serve as a reminder of their advocacy. This legislation will reinforce our continued commitment to work toward justice and equality.”
The courthouse naming bill now heads to the Senate.
Sports & Entertainment Willow Heals Herself and the World
By Maya MackeyWillow Smith’s new album, Empathogen, is a breath of fresh air. A palate cleanse following rap beefs and Celebrity sexual abuse allegations. A jazz album with a dollop of rock, “Empathogen” feels like yellow and sounds like Spring.
The album opens up with “Home”, a feature with John Batiste who declares “love eveything!” Shortly after, Willow lets us in on her life philosophy. “I live my life in a river of grace. I trust this river to carry me home. “ She lives her life in surrender to the What Is. But she wants her audience to know arriving to this place has been a journey.
“Symptom of Life,” the lead single of “Empathogen,” serves almost like a mission statement. It holds a magnifying glass to today’s society, asking how we’re going to move against the darkness we see. The song serves as both an encouragement: “Magic is real, when you see it inside, you ecide,” and a call to action:
Feast my eyes on lower things
While beauty is a symptom of life
Gotta decide if I’m gonna see it, why?
Feast our eyes on lower things
When suffering is craving the light Gotta decide how we’re gonna heal it.
Pairing the me with we almost feels like a call and response, a common format in gospel music and it’s a nice cultural touch to such a soulful album.
But I digress.
Beyond moral calls to action and reminders to practice good mental health, this album is Willow’s deeply reflective journey on a search for her identity. She questions who she is multiple times, shares stories of trying and failing to run from herself and
ultimately in the album finale, “Big Feelings,” comes to understand that, “ [self] acceptance is the key. Acceptance gives [her] wings.”
With affirmations like, “The fear isn’t real, the battle’s not mine,” Willow really tries to manage her big feelings and anxiety. She explains the struggle of wanting to live free, happy and unbothered but knowing sometimes you have fall apart in order to reach that state of emotional nirvana. She admits:
“Don’t really wanna,
But I think I need to fall to pieces
Don’t really wanna, But it’s funny ‘cause I think I need it.”
She ultimately chooses to surrender and cultivate a practice of solitude. A disciplined one at that and that discipline is no doubt a trait instilled by both of her parents. While she lets us
know intentional solitude is not always fun, she chooses to cling to the benefits at the end of the day.
In “The Fear is Not Real”:
“In the silence, I can hear inside my mind
In the silence, I can’t wear my disguise.”
If you still see Willow Smith as the 10 year old girl whipping her braids back’ n’ forth, Empathogen is your wake up call. She’s a woman now. And a brave one at that–willing to stare her anxiety in the face and wrestle with her fears of existentialism.
“I tried to fight it
The truth came back to bite me
But I wanna feel it, wanna see it
Even though it eats me whole.”
Her truth seems to be that life is more beautiful than we give it credit for. And
that if we can just learn to fight through our anxieties and mental distortions, we could all feel OK. Her truth is that she’d rather experience the real and raw, even if it sucks than live under a pretense of, “I’m fine.”
This album cycles through the emotional extremities of life. Starting off with hope and innocence, ending with confusion and angst and then starting all over again.
That’s life. Fighting to hold the balance of wonder and doubt, fear and courage, passion and apathy.
Willow asks us all to choose the good and to accept ourselves in the moments that we can’t.

NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton Dies at 71
Bill Walton, a basketball legend known for his success as a player and as a broadcaster, has passed away after a long bout with cancer. He was 71. Walton had an illustrious career, starting with his time at UCLA where he won two national championships and was a three-time national player of the year. His impact on the game continued into the NBA, where he was named MVP in the 1977-78 season and was a two-time champion.
Born on Nov. 5, 1952 in La Mesa, California, Walton’s basketball career began in grade school at Blessed Sacrament in San Diego.
In 1972, Walton joined the UCLA Bruins, where his college basketball
State in 1973 remains a national championship game record.
Walton, who entered the Hall of Fame in 1993, was one of the game’s most
celebrated figures. His NBA career — although disrupted by chronic foot injuries — included the Portland Trail Blazers, the San Diego/Los Angeles Clippers and the Boston Celtics.
“Bill Walton was truly one of a kind. As a Hall of Fame player, he redefined the center position,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a press release. “... But what I will remember most about him was his zest for life. He was a regular presence at league events -- always upbeat, smiling ear to ear and looking to share his wisdom and warmth. I treasured our close friendship, envied his boundless energy and admired the time he took with every person he encountered.”
When to Pivot Your Small Business (And How to Do It)
By Aden FergusonFor small business owners, recognizing the right time to make a major pivot in your company’s products, services or operations can mean the difference between success and failure. Being stuck in the status quo while market conditions change can doom even the most promising startups. On the other hand, pivoting recklessly or too frequently can squander resources and erode your brand.
So how can you tell when it’s really time to pivot? And what’s the best way to successfully implement a pivot? Here are some key strategies from entrepreneurship experts:
Signs It’s Time to Pivot
- Stagnant or declining sales/revenue despite your marketing efforts
- Negative customer feedback revealing your offerings are missing the mark
- Arrival of better, cheaper competitors that are taking market share
- Regulatory, technological, or cultural shifts that threaten your business model
- You’ve maxed out the potential of your current target market
If you’ve genuinely tried to make the numbers work but they still aren’t adding up after giving it your full
effort, that’s one of the clearest signs a pivot is needed.
How to Successfully Pivot
1. Get feedback from customers to identify their unmet needs you could
fill through a pivot. This customer insight is invaluable.
2. Explore multiple pivot options and run the numbers on each one. Can you achieve profitability through
reasonable projections?
3. Once you pick a pivot strategy, craft a detailed pivot plan with specifics on the new products/services, required resources, marketing, financials, etc.
4. Communicate the pivot clearly to your employees, customers, and partners. Radical pivots may require rebranding.
5. Don’t quit your current operations cold turkey if possible. Pivot step-by-step while still generating revenue from existing streams.
6. Remain nimble and datadriven. Continually evaluate whether the pivot is working or needs modifying.
Pivots are often essential for small businesses, but they carry big risks if not planned and executed extremely well. Your ability to pivot could make or break your company’s trajectory.
Small businesses must read the tea leaves when changing circumstances put pressure on their original business model. With a thoughtful pivot pursued strategically, small businesses can unlock new potential and success.

The Trailblazers Hall of Fame Awards is the first program that highlights Black Women leaders from various parts of California. Honorees will receive an award and a bejeweled crown to represent their royalty and authority, said Todd Griffin.
Cedric “The Entertainer” and his wife Lorna Kyles, event cochairs, will kick off the show. In addition, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, and other dignitaries will attend the ceremony.

This year’s event will combine both regions.
The California Trailblazers Hall of Fame Awards Celebration supports the work of the California Black Women’s Collective Empowerment Institute which focuses on improving the lives of Black Women and Girls by uplifting their voices and the issues that impact them. Aging in California Your Connection to Resources
California’s Aging Services Offer Valuable Resources for Older Adults Everyone can use some help from time to time. If you’re 60 or older, you may find that your needs are specific to your time in life. California’s aging services network offers a variety of programs, services, and supports for older adults, adults with disabilities, and family caregivers.
For example, you may prefer to age in place, staying in your own home and community. Two programs can make this easier: One offers help with home repairs, transportation, and extra in-home care; the other can arrange health and social care programs, including day centers with activities like arts and exercise. These can help you remain independent and less likely to need a care facility.
Food and Health Many Californians enjoy home-delivered meals, and many gather for group meals at senior centers, community centers, and other dining venues. If you have limited income, you might get fresh produce, herbs, and honey at participating farmers markets, as well as regular food benefits through the CalFresh Expansion program. Are you confused by all the health insurance options? Volunteers with a special counseling program can guide you and your family through the many choices in Medicare and long-term care insurance.
Care If you care for an older adult or someone with disabilities, you can find support in two programs that offer temporary in-home relief to caregivers, one-on-one and group counseling, and help with paperwork. There’s also help for families to develop action plans for people with dementia and referrals to ease caregiver stress. Have you run into consumer fraud, elder abuse, or age discrimination? Legal Services can help with these issues, including questions about Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, health insurance, pensions, and conservatorships.
Jobs More older Californians these days are looking for jobs. If you’re looking for work, you might qualify for free training in a variety of industries. You may even be placed in a job with a participating employer.
All these services — and many more — are coordinated locally through Area Agencies on Aging. Find yours by calling the California Aging and Adult Information Line at 800-510-2020. You can also visit aging.ca.gov to learn more.
