INGLEWOOD P.D. ANNOUNCES

MEMORIAL DAY DUI INGLEWOOD AND MORNINGSIDE SENIORS;

ENFORCEMENT CRACKDOWN Additional Officers to look for alcohol and drug impaired drivers INGLEWOOD TODAY Newswire

If you plan to spend time outdoors for backyard barbeques or recreational activities at local parks this Memorial Day Weekend, remember to do so responsibly. Alcohol and marijuana may be included in these gatherings. Tragically, Memorial Day marks the start of California’s 100 dangerous days of summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. In 2016, 16 people were killed and another 385 injured in alcohol involved collisions over the Memorial Day weekend. Sixteen people were killed and 377 injured over the 2016 Labor Day weekend. To reduce DUI-related collisions resulting in injuries or deaths, the Inglewood Police Department will deploy additional officers for a DUI / Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday May 25, 2018 between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. The goal of the checkpoint is to stop and arrest drivers showing signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. The checkpoint will be at an undisclosed location within the city limits and in an area with a history of DUI crashes and arrests. The Inglewood Police Department joins the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to drive awareness on the best ways to get from point A to point B safely. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, many police and sheriff departments in addition to the CHP will use OTS grant funds for overtime to deploy officers across the state to aggressively ticket or arrest traffic violators. High visibly enforcement operations will be in place all summer. In recent years, California has seen an increase in drug-impaired driving crashes. Inglewood PD reminds drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana use can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI. In addition to stopping and arresting impaired drivers, officers will watch for aggressive drivers. Those who speed, tailgate, fail to obey traffic signs and signals, and those driving distracted, will be cited.

DON’T ‘WANNA’ GO TO COLLEGE? INGLEWOOD TODAY Newswire

A college education is not in the cards for everyone, for a variety of reasons. In fact, a college degree may not be needed to be prepared for the jobs of the future. Udemy for Business, and other online firms, offer an alternative learning approach for some students who cannot or do not want to continue their learning in a traditional fashion. See below. Algorithms are coming for their jobs, so workers are teaching themselves algorithms When cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes started automating its quality assurance testing last year, it knew that the move could put more than four dozen employees out of work. Rather than simply replacing them with technology though, the Santa Clara, Calif., firm turned to tech to save their jobs. The company signed up with Udemy for Business, an online learning

platform that teaches courses ranging from data science to sourdough breadmaking. Malwarebytes identified the skills its quality assurance testers would need to stay relevant in the rapidly changing cybersecurity industry. As automation becomes ubiquitous, education start-ups such as Udemy, Coursera and General Assembly are positioning themselves as the nexus between today’s workforce and tomorrow’s jobs. Unlike traditional college programs that can take anywhere from two to four years and tens of thousands of dollars to complete, the online schools frame themselves like vocational programs for the Silicon Valley set. They offer training in a specific skill — say, learning a programming language — in months, rather than years. Coursera offers some of its courses for free but also has programs where it charges up-

ward of a few hundred dollars. Udemy’s courses for individuals start at $10.99, while its enterprise-facing arm, Udemy for Business, offers group rates for companies that want to sign up entire teams. Online learning and micro-certification are increasingly appealing to individuals and businesses seeking to future-proof themselves against automation, or introduce automation without having to fire and rehire a more highly skilled workforce. With automation predicted to displace as many as 73 million, or a third, of U.S. workers by 2030, futurists and automation experts say that retraining at every stage of a person’s career will probably be the most viable path for those who intend to keep working. The quality assurance testers at Malwarebytes, for example, previously

NETFLIX HAS SIGNED

BARACK AND MICHELLE OBAMA; LAUNCHING HIGHER GROUND PRODUCTIONS

Barack and Michelle Obama are getting into the television business with Monday’s announcement that they had signed a multi-year deal with Netflix. The former president and first lady have formed their own production company, Higher Ground Productions, for the material. In announcing a deal that had been rumored since March, Netflix offered no specifics on what shows they

would make. Netflix said the Obamas would make “a diverse mix of content,” potentially including scripted and unscripted series, documentaries or features. “We hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the

wider world,” Barack Obama said in Netflix’s announcement. The Obamas can be expected to participate in some of the programming onscreen, said a person familiar with the deal, not authorized to talk publicly about it, on condition of anonymity. The programming itself is not expected to be partisan in nature; a president who often derided the way things were covered on cable news won’t be joining in. The type of people that Obama — like other presidents — brought forward as guests at his State of the Union addresses would likely provide fodder for the kinds of stories they want to tell. “Barack and I have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others,” Michelle Obama said.
