Bivalent COVID Booster Eligibility Extended to Children Aged 5 and Older

State officials have announced eligibility for the updated Moderna COVID-19 booster and the PfizerBioNTech booster has been expanded.

Now children 6 years old and older who have received their initial series of vaccinations can receive the updated Moderna bivalent booster. Children 5 years old and older are approved to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech bivalent booster two months after their most recent injection.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these reformulated single dose boosters are referred to as “bivalent” because they are meant to defend against both the original virus that causes COVID-19 and the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants which currently make up about 80% of the cases in the United States.

California Health and Human Services Agency Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly, and Director of the California Department of Public Health and State Public Health Officer Dr. Tomás

J. Aragón made this announcement on Thursday Oct. 13 as experts are predicting that there will be an uptick in COVID-19 cases during the upcoming holiday season.

The decision to approve the use

of bivalent boosters is in line with recommendations the CDC has made to the public and it is supported by the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup.

“Given the anticipated burden of

COVID-19 infections and related illnesses this fall/winter season, the Workgroup believes that the benefits

L.A. City Council Shutdown Because Council Members

Caught on a Tape Exposing Racist Comments Won’t Resign

Last week, a recording anonymously posted on the social media site Reddit rocked the Los Angeles City Council. On the recording, Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Hererra, City Council President Nury Martinez (District 6), and City Council members Kevin de León (District 14) and Gilbert Cedillo (District 1) can be heard discussing redistricting using crass terms and divisive, racist language.

Martinez, speaking about Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon, said “F*** that guy, he’s with the Blacks.” She also used derogatory language to describe the 2-year-old Black adopted son of Councilmember Mike Bonin, who is White.

“This kid needs a beatdown. Let me take him around the corner, I’ll bring him right back,” Martinez said in the

recording.

Since the recording of the October 2021 closed door meeting was leaked,

leaders across the political and social spectrum, including Pres. Joe Biden and Sen. Alex Padilla have called for

the resignation of all four people heard on the tape.

Herrera resigned on Monday. Martinez took a leave of absence on Tuesday, Oct. 11, before the regular scheduled City Council meeting, then resigned on Wednesday. De Leon and Cedillo appeared at the Tuesday meeting, but after drawing the ire of the agitated public, they withdrew from the chamber.

When the meeting finally started, one by one, members of the public, including Assemblymember Isaac Bryan (D-Los Angeles), who was adopted, delivered impassioned speeches demanding the resignation of the three councilmembers.

The Council meetings scheduled for Wednesday and Friday were cancelled because protesters have promised to return to disrupt proceedings until

A Message from Interim County Administrator Mr. Arturo Valdez

Dear Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) Staff, Students, Families and Community,

In our continued commitment to serving our community and providing current information, we have some important updates in this week’s message.

Welcome Message

My name is Arturo Valdez and I am excited to join the IUSD family to support all of you in the upcoming months, as the County Administrator of Inglewood Unified School District on behalf of Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Debra Duardo. Thank you to the many of you who gave me such a warm welcome this week. Over the coming days, I hope to meet more of you as I visit our various school sites and District divisions. My goal is to listen to ensure you have what you need to be successful. Our goal is to have a new County Administrator appointed by January 2, 2023. In the coming weeks, we will work with the Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) on the selection process as the Education Code stipulates. This selection process will include opportunities for community and partner feedback. I look forward to working alongside the IUSD team and supporting the ongoing work that has been done to place Inglewood Unified, as a District on the rise. COVID-19 Face Masking Update

In our efforts to keep our community informed, we would like to provide

an update on the revised Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) COVID-19 face masking requirements. In accordance with LACDPH COVID protocols for K-12 Schools, the requirement for wearing a face mask has shifted to individual preference as of October 4, 2022. Any individual in a K-12 and childcare setting can wear a mask if they desire to, as masking is now based on individual preference. The new LACDPH face masking policy will be in effect in IUSD schools and facilities, as of Monday, October 17, 2022. To learn more about our COVID-19 face masking update, click here.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness month. As part of our wellness initiative, the District passed a resolution raising awareness regarding one of the leading causes of death in women in the United States, Breast Cancer. Throughout the month, we will be launching a series of activities to honor survivors of breast cancer, those being treated, and those who have lost their lives as a result of this disease. For the week of October 17-21, we are encouraging students and staff to decorate a pumpkin to display your support for Pinktober and on every Friday to wear Pink to honor survivors of Breast Cancer. Please take a picture of yourself participating in these activities and share on social media using hashtag: #IUSDPinktober

Hispanic Heritage Month (Puerto Rico)

IUSD celebrates Indigenous People’s Day. Indigenous Peoples’ Day is celebrated annually on the second Monday in October. Our District honors the sovereignty, resilience, and immense contributions that Native Americans have made to the world. Together we recognize and appreciate the history, culture, and perspectives of Indigenous peoples and their ancestors who lived on the land now known as North America.

Alternate Income Form – Deadline Extended!

Our deadline to submit alternate income forms has been extended to October 31, 2022! Don’t delay and complete the alternate income form today. In order to continue receiving additional District funding, families are required to complete the “Alternate Income Form”. The income form will not only provide free meals, it may also assist with after school academic and enrichment programs, state and federal funding for school budgets, resources for classrooms and much more! As a way to ensure our parents/guardians submit their form, our District is having a competition between elementary and secondary schools where the two winning schools will have a special treat for lunch. sponsors, IUSD Board Members and staff, leaders, community members, and families. Ms. Smith’s story was heartfelt, as she shared the many obstacles she has overcome as a young child and into adulthood. Despite Ms. Smith’s challenges connected to domestic violence, she did not allow herself to fall short, continued to fuel her passion for football, her aspiration to play professional football, and to become the first African-American female football coach. We are thankful for our sponsors, the Inglewood Educational Foundation and President Carliss McGhee, and the many sponsors who made this event possible.

Please join us as we share a series spotlighting different Latin American countries where we highlight their beauty, diversity, and rich history.

This week we would like to highlight Puerto Rico’s rich, unique, and diverse history. Puerto Rico’s cultural heritage and history, stems from a mix of indigenous Taino and Carib Indian, Spanish, and African people. According to the Smithsonian Magazine, Puerto Rican bloodlines and culture has influenced the island’s music, arts, food, and transitions. When Christopher Columbus arrived in Puerto Rico in 1493, the island was named San Juan Bautista, but as a result of the gold in the river, it was soon known as Puerto Rico, or “rich port” leading the capital to be named San Juan. In Puerto Rico, Spanish is the primary language, however English is the second most spoken language on the island. Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island and unincorporated U.S. territory where it received U.S. citizenship in 1917 and officially became a U.S. Commonwealth in 1952. Lastly, Puerto Rico has many renowned global artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Daddy Yankee, Luis Fonsi, Olga Tañón and Ricky Martin to name a few who have impacted and inspired many new artists and fans across the globe.

Vote NO on Inglewood Measure HC

Deeply Flawed, Unfair and Dangerous for Disadvantaged Patients

Unequal and Unfair for Health Care Workers

Only certain health care workers at private hospitals would get a pay raise, while workers at 73% of health care facilities would get nothing –including workers at community clinics, nursing homes, urgent care clinic and public hospitals and clinics.

Hurts Inglewood Patients

Measure HC excludes workers at community clinics, county hospitals, Planned Parenthood and other providers that serve uninsured, low-income and undocumented communities. Measure HC will create staffing shortages and jeopardize access to quality health care for our most disadvantaged patients.

• Workers, Patients and Inglewood Deserve Better

We should vote no on this measure and push for fair wages that treat ALL workers equally and don’t disrupt care for disadvantaged patients.

Sports & Entertainment

AfricaTown is considered a dying municipality in Alabama that sits along the Gulf Coast and next to Mobile.

At its peak, Africatown had about 12,000 residents. Now, about 1,800 call it home. It is famous – or infamous –for the Clotilda, the last slave ship that landed in the United States in 1860.

It is the home of some of the last survivors of the transatlantic slave trade and the birthplace of legendary New York Mets outfielder Cleon Jones, who caught the final out in the 1969 World Series that clinched victory for the Miracle Mets.

Through their charitable “Last Out Community Foundation,” Jones and his wife of more than 50 years, Angela, help repair storm-damaged homes in Africatown and assist the small community in rebuilding efforts.

Jones, 78, actively participates in the efforts.

“Like I tell my wife, I’m old, but I’m not dead. I can walk up the ladder and do what needs to be done,” Jones remarked. “In my younger days, I could

walk up the ladder, but I could jump off the house getting down. I can’t jump off the house anymore. Now I walk down the ladder. I have to be careful.”

The “Last Out Community Foundation” was formed to raise funds to refurbish and build affordable homes, combat blight, and provide positive

youth programs in Africatown.

Growing up in the small community during the 1940s and 1950s left a mark on him, stated Jones, who credits greats like Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, and Billy Williams for helping to shape the person he became – one who, despite his success, never forgot his roots.

“We service the community by painting houses and restoring houses,” Jones told the New York Post.

“And since the storms (Hurricanes Sally and Zeta), we’ve had a lot of roof problems in which the storms blew the roof off.

“When I grew up in this community, we had 12- to 14,000 people. Now we are looking at 1,800. That says we are a dying community. I know I can’t replicate the community, but we can still fight to restore it as best we can and preserve the history of the community.”

Jones is best remembered as a vital member of the 1969 Mets.

During the 1960s, the Mets had a reputation for frequent losses, suffering a record 120 defeats in their debut year of 1962.

In their first six years, the Mets lost an

average of 108 games. But, in 1969, the underdog Mets launched themselves into the 1969 World Series and the history books when against all odds, they miraculously defeated the mighty Baltimore Orioles.

Jones closed his glove on the final out, a flyball by the Orioles’ Davey Johnson that sent all of New York into a celebration.

Now, Jones wants to celebrate giving others in his beloved community a second chance.

“It takes money and manpower and materials, all of those things,” Jones said.

“What I’ve been doing is reaching out to businesses in the area seeking materials and help to do certain things. The people, they reach out to you — maybe not as much as you would like or hope, but they hear you. With the pandemic, it just adds fuel to the fire. You don’t get a chance to shake hands with people and reach out to them where you can make things happen.”

Baseball Legend Helping to Rebuild Africatown Dodgers Devastation and McVay’s Genius

is like lighting in a bottle and can turn into a beast when a team captures it. The Padres were coming off a wildcard series win and brought those winning ways into the 1st round playoff series against the Dodgers. From game one, you could feel the rumblings of momentum generating after the 3rd inning. The Dodgers were stunned by the Padre bullpen for the last 6 innings of game 1. In fact, the Padres were a hit away from stealing game 1.

As the defending champs, the Rams have expectations to compete at a high level and repeat as champions. They are showing signs of life at times, but those signs are few and far between. McVay is a genius, but the mastermind has become exposed while defenses have been teeing off on his offensive game plans. Rams refuel this week as they have a much-needed Bye.

make decisions, go get Desean Jackson off the couch and let him take the top of the defense. Oh, and run the doggone football. Justin Herbert is one of the best in the league but looks timid and very conservative checking down for 4–5yard passes on the regular. This isn’t the formula for success and drives Bolts fans crazy!

What a weekend in sports for LA teams! The devastation I feel from the Dodgers first round series loss to the San Diego Padres remains a tough pill to swallow. The beauty of sports is the game must be played to determine a winner. There is no politics, no favoritism, and no significant advantage other than the availability of players. Everyone plays in the same heat, wind, rain, or cold. The playing field is leveled and teams with the energy, desire, and momentum will rise to a level that produces a victory. On any given day, any team can win and that is why you play the game.

In the case of the Los Angeles Dodgers, they hadn’t played a meaningful game in over a month due to their early and often regular season success winning 111 games. Including 14 wins out of 19 games against the Padres. Momentum

When the Friars took game two heading home to San Diego, the momentum officially turned into a force the Dodgers could not overcome. Truth be told, the Dodgers were never really in the series. It’s the part of sports that most can’t understand. The boys in blue had proven to be the best team in baseball all regular season long. Regardless of the high payroll and superstar lineup, momentum and complacency took over and ultimately ripped the hearts out of the Los Angeles fan base. This one is going to sting for quite sometime and don’t even mention next year. It’s too soon! Way too soon!

The NFL teams in the city both came away with victories this week. The Rams beat the lowly Carolina Panthers while the Chargers took down the Denver Broncos in overtime on Monday Night Football. Neither team is clicking or finding a specific strength to build upon. Injuries are a part of the game and both teams have significant concerns on the offensive line. Nobody cares and is going to give you a pass because you have injuries. It’s a “next man up” world.

Brandon Staley, head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers either has a rabbit’s foot in his pocket or is the luckiest poker player in history. In Monday night’s game he once again decided to go for it on for 4th and 2 to begin the 4th quarter instead kicking a field goal and taking the lead for good. Those three points would have proven to be the deciding factor in winning the game in regulation. Charger fans are done with Staley’s 4th down decisions. His antics are only creating an outcry to welcome Sean Peyton in the coming months. Wins are hard to come by in the NFL and Bolt fans will take it. Staley sure makes it difficult to feel good about being 4-2 after six weeks.

The Chargers injuries are mounting but nobody cares. The glaring concerns with this team is on offense. The absence of Keenan Allen is paramount and the lack of a wide receiver that can fly down the field is obvious. Offensive Coordinator, Joe Lombardi is relying way too much on Justin Herbert and completely abandoning the running game. Throwing the ball 57 times a game is not the blueprint to the playoffs. Message to the Bolts management who

The Chargers defense is the saving grace. Even with a one-sided pass rush. Khalil Mack is producing at a consistent rate but has no help from the other side with Bosa out for significant time again. The secondary is much improved and linebacker Drue Tranquil has been a pleasant surprise thus far.

Derwin James continues to be the best defender on the field and leads the charge for the bolts. The Seahawks are coming to town, and this could be a trap game for the Chargers. Don’t sleep on Geno Smith and the Hawks. They have looked good this season and will be up for the challenge. Although I don’t like it, my pick #2 and upset of the week is Seahawks 27 – Chargers 21.

The Trojans were brought down to earth by Utah over the weekend.

Lincoln Riley made some questionable calls down the stretch and the Ute fans celebrated Saturday night by storming the field after a 43-42 win over USC at home. All the Lincoln Riley hype and transfer portal chatter can finally come to a halt. Now that reality has set in, the Trojans can get back to work on building

BUPPIE | BUSINESS LA Lounge Organizes Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon

The LA Lounge, which continues to impact Inglewood communities by hosting events with high impact has done it again with a luncheon that brought awareness to Breast Cancer and survivors.

Recently, the members only cigar establishment located in Inglewood hosted breast cancer survivor Sharon Robinson during its luncheon.

“This is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so what would it mean if we didn’t actually engage ourselves in to helping in any way that we could?,” asked LA Lounge owner Aaron Moore.

The event was organized by Lounge women members Temecia Citizen and Shynella LaBostrie, Tony Wafford and with the help of support staff.

Organizers decorated the lounge in pink and also had members wear T-shirts highlighted with pink writing.

“This is what we do,” Moore declared. “We want to help as many people as we can, but if we can just impact a few,

it is much better than not impacting none.”

Robinson spoke to an audience of women on how to be aware of the early signs and her personal experience on how she became one of the fortunate one to survive.

Next on the LA Lounge agenda is Thanksgiving when they play on providing fully cooked meals for free to many community members and those less fortunate.

of bivalent booster doses that more closely match currently circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants will sustain protection against COVID-19-related hospitalizations and deaths in young children and substantially outweigh any potential risks,” Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup Chair Arthur Reingold, MD, said in a statement addressed to the governors of California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington State.

Medical experts warn that cooler weather will bring a surge of COVID-19 cases at the same time that cases of the flu could make a return this fall and winter. Doctors are promoting flu shots to keep hospital admissions down as health systems grapple with surging COVID cases.

According to the CDC and official California state estimates, the national 14-day-average for COVID-19 hospitalizations is currently 6,496 while the state average is about 1,818.

According to the state, the number of COVID-19 deaths averaged about 19 per day.

About 72.3% of Californians have received the primary series of vaccinations. 58.6% the state’s population have received the primary series and the booster. Only 37.5% of children 5-11 have received the primary series of vaccinations.

Eligible Californians can speak with their doctor, visit MyTurn.ca.gov or call 833-422-4255 for more information to make a vaccine or booster appointment.

DeLeon and Cedillo resign.

On Friday, Assemblymember Bryan told California Black Media (CBM) “I’m inspired by the solidarity we’ve seen across communities, across race, class, geography and even political boundaries. We’ve got city elected officials, state elected officials, county elected officials all the way up to the Senator for California, Sen. Padilla and the President of the United States have not only chosen to engage in this conversation, but to call for justice in these resignations, call for accountability in his resignation.

“I’m inspired by that, and I think it shows a lot of potential for the future,” he continued. “But I’m also a little bit frustrated and still kind of healing from the fact that de Leon and Cedillo have refused to accept accountability, and the idea that they would show up to that council meeting [Tuesday] I think was a display of complete disregard for the people and a bit of arrogance quite frankly.”

Council member Bonin tested positive for COVID, so next week’s Tuesday and Wednesday meetings will be held in an online format.

Acting Council President Mitch O’Farrell’s (District 13) office said in a statement to CBM, “It would not be appropriate for Council members De León and Cedillo to attend regardless of the meeting format. Their failure to resign cannot indefinitely interfere with the council’s ability to conduct the people’s business. They need to do the right thing and resign.”

In addition to the outrage about the racist comments in the conversation, the release of the tapes has drawn scrutiny to the redistricting process itself. California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on Wednesday that the California Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the Los Angeles City Council Redistricting Process.

“It seems like it’s way too political process here in the city of Los Angeles and it should be more independent and as Chair of the Assembly Elections Committee, it’s something that I want to look at, to see if there’s a role for the state to increase the fairness and the efficacy and the impartiality of this process,” Bryan told CBM.

A spokesperson for O’Farrell told CBM, “Councilmember O’Farrell has introduced a major charter reform measure, that would go before the voters, with the intention of expanding the number of city council districts, thereby increasing representation. If that were to pass, there would be an associated special redistricting that would need to take place.

On Tuesday’s Council agenda is an item about forming an independent redistricting commission for the city. O’Farrell is very eager to discuss and vote on this item.”

“De León’s and Cedillo’s refusal to resign is another deep wound they’re inflicting on us all. Let Los Angeles heal. Resign today,” Bonin tweeted.

City Councilmembers De León and Cedilla did not respond to CBM’s requests for comments.

a winning program again. There is no doubt the Trojans have some serious weapons on offense and can score with the best in the country. Defensively is where they are vulnerable, and it has showed since week two when Stanford put up 441 yards of total offense. The Trojans have a Bye week to rally and get ready to wax up on a weak Arizona Wildcat team on October 29th.

Although the UCLA Bruins didn’t play this week, they rose in the rankings to #9. It been 7 years since the Bruins have cracked the top 10. Congrats but not the target on their back grows. It’s going to take a colossal effort this week as the 6-0 Bruins travel to Eugene to take on #10 Oregon who are currently 5-1 with their only loss being to #2 Ohio State in week 1.

Finally, the NBA season begins tonight, and the Lakers travel to the bay area to take on the defending champion Golden State Warriors. I’ll take the Warriors in a lopsided victory. The Lakers showed absolutely nothing in the pre-season and all signs point toward mystery with new Coach Darvin Ham and this 2022-23 team. The LA fans are starving for a competitive Laker team this year and missing the playoffs for two straight seasons will not be acceptable. I cross my fingers and toes while praying this group can develop some chemistry and stand clear of the injury bug. They have a solid mix of talent and have gotten younger. As the season embarks this evening, LA fans will need to stay patient and pray that Coach Ham creates a culture built on unity, toughness, and total execution.
