By Francis Taylor, Asst. Publisher

Independence Day (Día de la Independencia) is a Mexican holiday to celebrate the “cry of independence” on September 16, 1810, which started a revolt against the Spaniards. It follows from the day of the Cry of Dolores (El Grito de Dolores), on September 15. Independence Day is a public holiday in Mexico. It is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed. Mexicans celebrate their country’s Independence Day with fireworks, parties (fiestas), food, dance and music on September 16. Flags, flowers and decorations in the colors of the Mexican flag – red, white and green – are seen in public areas in cities and towns in Mexico. Whistles and horns are blown and confetti is thrown to celebrate this festive occasion. “Viva Mexico” or “Viva la independencia” are shouted amidst the crowds on this day. Independence Day is a national public holiday in Mexico. Banks, schools, government offices and many businesses are closed. Some streets and roads may be closed or restricted in major cities to make way for large celebrations. People intending on travelling via public transport in Mexico should check with public transit authorities on any timetable or route changes. 2

The under-construction future home of the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers in Inglewood is slated to open next summer, but already has a name. “In less than a year, the Rams will be running out of the tunnel into SoFi Stadium,” said Los Angeles Rams COO Kevin Demoff in a statement from the LA Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park, which owns the stadium. Renderings show the new name in enormous, glowing letters that appear on the transparent roof of the building. The multi-billion sports venue named

As for the stadium, it was originally expected to open in 2019, but a few rainy months pushed the date back. It is slated to open in the summer of 2020. As of April, the stadium was two-thirds complete. The stadium’s first events will be two Taylor Swift shows in July 2020. Swift will be the first female performer to open an NFL stadium, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The price tag for the agreement will not be released publicly, but these deals are usually big-ticket items. Last year United Airlines paid $69 million for naming rights to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum—the temporary home of the Rams—for a 16-year period. The SoFi Stadium is part of a 298-acre redevelopment of land that once housed the Hollywood Park racetrack. A whole new neighborhood is also planned for the expansive property, one that will

Hollywood Park, the 298-acre development being built by Los Angeles Rams Owner/Chairman E. Stanley Kroenke, recently announced its first three tenants in the retail section of the district and announced the name of the NFL stadium. Food, fitness and film will come together as a new concept from the founder of Inglewood’s own Three Weavers Brewing Company, Long Beach’s Olympix Fitness, and global cinema company Cinépolis, which will all call Hollywood Park home. Hollywood Park will feature world-

class sports and performance venues, office, retail and residential spaces, and more than 20 acres of parkland. Located in Inglewood, CA, one end of the development will be anchored by a 500,000 square-foot retail and entertainment district that will offer local and global fashions and flavors to deliver an unprecedented combination of shopping, dining, recreation, entertainment and nightlife. This retail district is complemented by luxury apartments and best-in-class office campuses that offer unique design and cutting-edge technology while prioritizing opportunities for social interac-

tion. Hollywood Park also will be home to SoFi Stadium, the future home of the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams, set to open in 2020. “At Hollywood Park, we are developing a new city in the heart of the greater Los Angeles region where people from all across the world will come together,” said Jason Gannon, Managing Director, SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park. “We are thrilled to welcome Lynne Weaver, Olympix Fitness and Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas, and all of their employees, patrons, members and fans, 2 to Hollywood Park.
