Centinela Hospital Medical Center today announced that it has been named one of America’s 100 Great Community Hospitals in 2019, according to a study released by Becker’s Hospital Review. With its inclusion for the fifth consecutive year, Centinela Hospital is one of two Los Angeles-based hospitals and one of six California hospitals to make the list.

This week has been a busy and exciting one for the City of Inglewood.

The Chamber hosted an enormously successful Police and Fire Appreciation Luncheon honoring 14 local heroes. The city hosted the grand reopening of the Tennis Courts at Ed Vincent Park, as well as the grand opening of the newly established electric vehicle charging station, adjacent to the Los Angeles Philharmonic Youth Orchestra facility currently under construction adjacent to City Hall.

At the same time, the city council meeting was probably one of the shortest in recent memory.

The council approved Amendment Two to Agreement No. 19-077 for Welfare-to-Work Vocational, Intermediary and Direct Services by and between the County of Los Angeles and the City of Inglewood serving as the administrative entity for the South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB) and an amendment to Agreement No. 18-204 with CSG Consultants, Inc., increasing the contract by an additional $140,000 for professional Building Safety plan check services.

The council approved the payment of invoices for the installation of a new video wall at the Inglewood Senior Center; an invoice from Enterprise Security, Inc., for the installation of several access card readers and other access control features for the Inglewood Police Department; an invoice from Meridian Rapid Defense Group for barrier packages provided for the Taste of Inglewood event.

The council adopted a resolution amending the Fiscal Year 2018-2019 Annual Capital Improvements Program Budget for the Imperial Highway Improvement Project and another resolution revising the effective date for the Amended Funding Agreement No. 17-274, between the City of Inglewood and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Authority.

The council approved a four-year agreement with Enterprise Fleet Management to lease a total of twenty-one (21) vehicles (with the option to buy).

The council adopted a resolution amending the Fiscal Year 2018-2019 Capital Improvement Program Budget by $306,520 for the Signal Synchronization & Timing Program for a total of $352,520 and authori9zed the payment of invoices from TOT Housing Solutions for subsidized housing costs for senior citizens.

City Clerk Horton announced the county of Los Angeles is conducting mock elections on September 28th to educate voters on the proper use of voting equipment. Anyone interested in participating in the mock election should call her office at 310-412-5280 for detailed instructions.

During the public comments an Inglewood resident appealed to the council members to assist in securing a grassy location to conduct a Lacrosse demonstration, sponsored by the US Lacrosse and US Olympic Team, to introduce the sport to Inglewood youth.

Another resident announced a Lucia Bella performance at the Miracle Theater in Inglewood that travels next to the Kennedy Center. Complimentary tickets were offered for anyone who wanted to attend.

A representative from the NAACP announced a Human Trafficking Event on Saturday and an Inglewood Chamber representative thanked everyone who made their recent Fire and Police Appreciation event a successful one.

An Inglewood Commissioner urged the owners of the Forum to plant palm trees to adorn their property, while an Inglewood resident announced the upcoming document shredding event and 5K Run and Walk event this weekend.

Council Member Dotson thanked everyone who was involved in the renovation of the tennis courts at Ed Vincent Park and thanked the community who came out for the grand reopening. He also announced that there is still time to sign-up for the City of Champions 5K Walk and Run on September 28, starting at 7:00 am at 700 Warren Lane.

Member Franklin acknowledged the very successful fire and police appreciation event and recalled their earlier moniker which was Guns and Hoses, indicating that they deserve our deepest appreciation. He also named to of Inglewood’s latest heroes, Officers John Osmos and Eric Quintana who recently saved the life of an individual threatening to jump of the bridge overpass onto the 405 Freeway.

He acknowledged longtime Inglewood resident, volunteer and mentor, Donald Bly, who introduced tennis to Inglewood Youth and indicated that naming the new tennis complex in his honor was a fitting tribute. He thanked Kaiser Permanente for his recent flu shot.

Member Morales echoed the favorable comments of his colleagues regarding the Electric Vehicle Charging station and the Police and Fire Appreciation Luncheon.

Mayor Butts reminded everyone that Inglewood pays its fire and police officers well, affirming our appreciation for their service. He commented that the 269 attendees at the recent event is a testament to the brand and stature the City of Inglewood has achieved and it was on full display at the luncheon. He thanked our public safety personnel for their service and adjourned the meeting.

As California struggles to contain the largest fire in state history, more than 2,000 inmates have volunteered to fight the flames. Offering just $1

Huge Gains In Test Scores LeBron James says he’s INCREDIBLY PROUD of stats showing the students at his “I Promise” school in Akron are making tremendous gains in statewide testing ... just 1 year after it opened.

There are only 240 students in the inaugural 3rd and 4th grade classes at the Akron school -- but numbers obtained by the NY Times show test

scores in math and reading were up BIG after the first year.

In reading, the 3rd and 4th graders had initially scored in the lowest percentile -- the 1%.

But, after a year, when the students took the district-wide exams, the 3rd graders JUMPED to the 9th percentile and the 4th graders moved to the 16th!

er), with sons William and James R. Lee, moved to California, first to San Francisco and then to Sacramento, in the early 1940s. Dr. Lee attended Sacramento State University (1953-1955) and went on to earn a B.A. degree (Accounting) from UC Berkeley in 1957.

He was awarded an Honorary Ph.D. from Southeastern University in 1970.

After graduating from UC Berkeley, Lee had short, but fruitful, employment stays with both Aerojet and IBM Corporations. His dream to establish his own firm, however, led him to open his own real estate and land development company in 1960. The success he had in real estate allowed him to invest in the much-needed community newspaper publishing business.

He along with local radio connoisseur Geno Gladden and businessman John W. Cole, launched The Sacramento Observer on November 22, 1962.

A short time after starting the paper, Gladden passed away. And, in 1965, Lee and his wife, Kathryn, became sole owners of the paper, also starting at the time the Lee Publishing Company. The publishing company grew during the 1970s and 80s, to publishing at one point, six distinct publications in California and Nevada — including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Stockton, Solano County, Reno, Nevada and Sacramento.

Dr. Lee took on local, state and national leadership roles. From 1970 to 1989, he served on the board of directors and as an officer of the National Newspapers Publisher’s Association (NNPA), the Black Press of America.

He was co-founder and a long-time president of the West Coast Black Publisher’s Association (WCBPA). Lee was named “Publisher of the Year” by the WCBPA in 1985.

Active in the field of journalism and the newspaper industry, Lee’s publications, along with his call for quality and excellence in the industry, gave him a national reputation. He was a member of the jury, judging for Pulitzer Prize winners in Journalism in 1987.

Lee’s newspaper, The Sacramento Observer, has been named the nation’s No. 1 Black newspaper six times; being awarded the coveted John B. Russwurm trophy, the nation’s top newspaper publishing honor given by the National Newspaper Publisher’s Association.

A recognized business leader, Lee served on the board of directors of a number of national and local companies, including Blue Cross of California; Methodist Hospital (Sacramento); -- those are HUGE gains.

And that’s not all ... when it came to math, the 3rd graders jumped from the 1% to the 18th percentile -- and 4th graders moved from the 2% to the 30th!!!!

When asked about the incredible improvements, LeBron told the Times, “These kids are doing an unbelievable

Dr. Lee’s commitment to serve others kept him active in civic and educational circles. He was named Alumnus of the Year (1993), by UC Berkeley’s Black Alumni Association. He was appointed by California Governor George Deukmejain to chair the statewide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday committee, leading to the state’s observance of the MLK holiday. Years later, in January 2014, Dr. Lee would serve as the Grand Marshal of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday March in Sacramento.

In Sacramento, the prestigious Sacramento Magazine named Dr. Lee as one of the “50 Most Powerful Leaders” in the City (2006). He was a cofounder and former President of the Men’s Civic League; co-founder of the Sacramento Urban League; as well as co-founder of the Sacramento Area Black Caucus.

Dr. Lee has been honored by a large number of groups and organizations for his long and dedicated community service and leadership. He received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the California Black Chamber of Commerce and the Sacramento Chapter of the Links and the OBSERVER was inducted into the Sacramento Metro Chamber of Commerce’s Hall of Fame in 2012.

Dr. Lee has also been saluted by Sacramento 100 Black Men, Inc; the Sacramento Branch of the NAACP (D.D. Mattocks Award); the American Leadership Forum (Exemplary Leader Award) and was a recipient of the Congressman Bob Matsui Award (for Distinguished Community Service); The Greater Sacramento Urban League’s Co-Founder Award; the California State University, Sacramento Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award; and many others.

In 2012, Fortune School of Education named an elementary school, William H. Lee College Prep, in honor of Dr. Lee. The school’s computer lab is named after Dr. Lee’s late wife.

In January 2015, Kevin Johnson, Sacramento’s first African American mayor, awarded Dr. Lee with the Mort Friedman Legacy Award, which honors an outstanding individual who has made notable civic and community contributions within the Sacramento city and region.

A memorial service has been tentatively set for Sacramento on Tuesday, October 1. Details to follow. job, better than we all expected.”

He added, “When we first started, people knew I was opening a school for kids. Now people are going to really understand the lack of education they had before they came to our school.”

“People are going to finally understand what goes on behind our doors.”

So, what does go on behind their doors?

JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I SAW IT ALL, TRUMP MOCKS GRETA THUNBERG, A CHILD! Our president’s actions have been alarming from the very beginning.

From his campaign announcement where he mischaracterized Mexicans to his inauguration when he forced his press spokesperson to declare the largest inauguration crowd ever, I did not believe that we were in store for a president like no other.

Trump has given numerous indications that he wishes to trash our Constitution and has no desire to follow the rule of law. We remember that he announced that he could shoot someone in public and his supporters would continue to support him. Many have said that among his most recent machinations – denying a review of the whistle

base of supporters and a large group of Republicans who feel that he can say, tweet or do no wrong.

Here is s short snippet of what Greta Thunberg delivered Monday, in a powerful and passionate message, to the United Nations General Assembly climate summit. ”People are suffering, people are dying, entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth.”

Here is the sarcastic, demeaning and mocking comment Trump tweeted in response to Greta’s plea for the world to take responsible, long-term steps to save our planet.

And his deeds continue to pile up in the questionably legal category.

He defies the constitution by denying Congressional oversight and promises pardons for breaking the law to help keep him in power. Let’s also not forget where he said he likes to grab women’s private parts or when he mocked the disabled reporter.

But Trump, mocking a teenage girl who has established a worldwide following of environmental followers, suggests that there is no bottom limit to where Trump will grovel to appeal to a

Trump has called climate change a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese, and was expected to skip the climate summit at the U.N. on Monday but instead he made a surprise visit for about 15 minutes. Many world leaders gathered here are angry that the president is working to pull the U.S. out of the 2016 Paris climate agreement, but Trump has argued that it puts the country at a competitive disadvantage.

I was angry, most recently, when Trump mocked Greta, the teenage climate activist, just as most of our allies are angry that he wants to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement signed by President Obama.

I can’t wait to see how angry Trump is going to be when he learns that Greta has already been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, the coveted award he so unabashedly sought, but that is completely out of reach of his tiny hands.

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.

A fire erupted on a jet fuel tanker on the 405 Freeway near Los Angeles International Airport, prompting the closure of three northbound lanes in Inglewood Monday afternoon, California Highway Patrol said.

The fire erupted at the rear of the tanker near the brake area, and was quickly extinguished, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Video from the scene showed thick

gray smoke billowing from a white tanker stopped on the highway as cars drove past.

Flames could be seen at the back of the truck.

CHP issued a SigAlert for all northbound lanes of the freeway near La Cienega Boulevard at about 1:25 p.m.

All lanes were reopened by about 10 p.m.

Two lanes remained closed Monday

night, the agency said.

Responding officers found a person outside the truck with a fire extinguisher, according to CHP incident reports.

No injuries have been reported. No further details were immediately available.

Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson to Dedicate Jewel ThaisWilliams Square at the Corner of Pico and Norton Forever Commemorating the Owner of the Legendary ‘Jewel’s Catch One’ Club Thais-Williams Becomes Second Black Woman and First Black Lesbian to Receive Honors Los Angeles- On Saturday, October 5 at 3 p.m., Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson will designate of the intersection of Pico Blvd. and Norton Ave. as “JEWEL THAIS-WILLIAMS SQUARE” for the legendary human rights activist and owner of Jewel’s Catch One, the oldest Black owned disco in America that became a safe haven for the Black lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgenders community.

With the designation Thais-Williams becomes the second Black woman in the history of City of Los Angeles to have a square named after her and the first Black lesbian to receive the honor.

“Everybody deserves to be able to enjoy a night out where they can feel safe and welcomed, but before Jewel Thais-Williams that was not the reality for Los Angeles’ Black LGBTQ+ community,” said Wesson. “With Jewel’s Catch One, she built a home for young, Black queer people who were often isolated and shut out at their own homes, and in doing so changed the lives of so many. Jewel is more than deserving to be the first Black lesbian woman with a dedicated square in the City of Los Angeles for this and so many other reasons.”

For over four decades, Thais-Williams helped change the course of our

country by breaking down racial, social, and cultural barriers. One of the original safe spaces for the Black LGBT community, The Catch also served as a refuge for many during the AIDS crisis.

As Thais-Williams’ club grew to become known as the “unofficial Studio 54 of the West Coast,” Jewel became a national role model for how to fight discrimination and serve the less fortunate.

Thais-Williams graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in History, and during her college years, she wanted to be self-employed. Her first business was a boutique, but it went out of business, so she bought a bar. She opened the club

after she experienced discrimination in different clubs around West Hollywood, because she was Black and female.

Women at the time were not allowed to tend bar, but Jewel saved enough money and bought the bar despite the limitations. When the club opened, it became a hub for a diverse population of performers, including Sylvester, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Janet Jackson, Donna Summer, Whoopi Goldberg, Rick James, and Madonna.

While she was still the owner of the nightclub, Jewel went back to school and got her Master of Science degree in Oriental Medicine from Samra University in 1998. Due to the high rate of preventable diseases, such as diabetes and obesity, in minority populations, Jewel decided to open a non-profit called the Village Health Population next door to The Catch. It was created with the purpose of educating lower-income communities on nutrition and living a more healthy lifestyle and continues to serve the community.

As profiled by journalist Karen Ocamb, “Thais-Williams became a mother figure to many, helping her ‘kids’ get clean and sober and providing comfort to Black gay men rejected by their families and church during the AIDS crisis.

But Thais-Williams took the extra step, co-founding the Minority AIDS Project and the Imani Unidos Food Pantry in South L.A. and joining the Board of AIDS Project Los Angeles to bring their HIV/AIDS services ‘down to the hood.’”

Ocamb continued, “additionally, with her wife Rue, Thais-Williams founded Rue’s House, the nation’s first housing facility for women with AIDS and their children, most of whom were poor and Black.” Thais-Williams fund-

ed Rue’s house from revenue made at Jewel’s Catch One. A number of the women living with AIDS staying at Rue’s House publicly raised the issue of what would happen to their children after they died. After the women gained access to life-saving HIV medications, Rue’s House transition into a sober living facility.

After nearly closing in 2015, it was purchased by Mitch Edelson and reopened under new management. Briefly called The Union after the change in management, it has since reverted to the Catch One moniker.
