Working 9 to 5 Just to Stay Alive: Graduate Jobs Name: Ross Paul McNaughton Age: 22 Location: Columbus, Ohio, United States Job title and description in a sentence: Assistant designer: I’m currently working closely with a senior designer who is head of Abercrombie & Fitch Boys, we mainly design fleece tops, bottoms, graphic tees and active wear. What are the greatest perks of the job? Being thrown into the deep end, and learning as I go along. The work is hard and forever changing but offers a ridiculous amount of hands-on experience. I’m looked to as an experienced designer, a part of a cross functional team. So, It’s great to be doing what I love, perks being that I can design and influence the brand so early in. Best achievement to date? My greatest achievement to date was definitely getting the opportunity to come to the US. I remember being stuck in the empty studios working till late after hand-in to finish my Abercrombie project. I didn’t think I had any chance but it paid off. What was the most important thing university taught you? University has this amazing ability to raise someone to a professional standard so quickly. I remember being so quiet and unconfident about my work in first year. You have to balance so much positive and negative feedback that it’s easy to get lost and confused about what you want to do. University taught me to be precise, to know what I’m looking for but keeping the creativity you learn in the beginning. Who is your biggest inspiration and why? Like any fashion student, I have religiously followed the works of the big fashion houses such as McQueen, Dior and Burberry. Then at University my sources of influence became more refined and personal. But my biggest inspiration (trying my best to not sound cheesy) was the people that pushed and believed when I often didn’t. Dream Project: A dream project would be to either work with some of my favourite brands, including Neil Barrett and Dior Homme, or to showcase as an independent designer at LCM. But who knows what will happen? APPENDICES

ARTS UNIVERSITY BOURNEMOUTH

Learning Agreement Name: Paulina Kleparska Course: BA (HONS) Fashion Level: 5 Unit: Design Enterprise & Innovation Unit Code: FAC556 Credit points: 40 Study hours: 400 Tutor(s): Esther Yarnold Synopsis of study

For my Design Enterprise & Innovation Live Project I will work on a brief for event management project, I will work with a group of dedicated and passionate people who are willing to represent Fashion at AUB at a general level, treated very professionally with the opportunity to showcase my marketing skills in front of some of the Fashion Industry’s leading professionals. My team and I will be responsible for the co-design and co-production of the three Fashion Events showcasing final year BA (Hons) Fashion students’ work which will be presented to an extremely high standard at a local Bournemouth Show, Graduate Fashion Week, and the AUB HE Summer Show. I want to show off my marketing and publication skills within the group work and have the opportunity to develop my marketing and publication abilities from my past units and learn more on the way. To achieve this I will work at industry standards, doing all set tasks and engaging in all of the sessions as well as working outside of them. I want to achieve this because this is a great opportunity to gain more industrial knowledge towards marketing and publication which might lead me to have a great future based around these areas. I feel like I am going to improve on my weaknesses a lot, I will have to show a lot of confidence and understanding towards the project, the fact that I will have to speak in front of my group and present my ideas will give me better self-esteem and make me a better person. At some point I will have to take on leadership which will expand my communication skills and making decisions, contacting people to get sponsorship or resources, this will show me how it feels to be a part of the industry. I am hoping to approach this project with in-depth study as well as research, as an event management group, towards our outcome for the Graduate Fashion Show by a consultation with our Client, Manager and Coordinators I will join the Publication team for Fashion at AUB’s new magazine which will be launched at the actual show in London. Not only that, I will be a part of Marketing/PR group which will lead to; creation of goody bags as in finding a good provider of the actual bag, taking care of the size, colour and material. Sourcing a good sponsorship’s whose products will be put in our goody bags, designing tickets for all of our shows as well as posters that could be put up around town to make local people aware of the Graduate Fashion Show, and lastly the coordination with the press. All the evidence of our body of work will be presented and showed in our individual blogs and final report. The importance of research in depth of each event is very important, defining Product, Price, Place, Promotion, People, Persuasion for clearly defining clients, audiences and investor’s needs, this will go towards my final report with SWOT analysis on a side. Aims;

A1 To further develop the creative, intellectual and practical applications of specialist study to the appropriate level. A2 To demonstrate an understanding of the historical, cultural, professional and contextual frameworks, which inform my work. A3 To introduce myself to the career and future study possibilities relevant to my subject interest through the promotion of self-evaluation and review as an essential part of my personal and professional development. Learning outcomes:

LO1 Develop existing skills and acquire new competences evidenced through a comprehensive body of work that will enable me to assume significant responsibility within organisations. LO2 Demonstrate the ability to apply underlying concepts and principles in relation to my specialist practice. LO3 Demonstrate the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making.

28

Assessment Requirements: For this assessment I will have responsibility to produce a Publication within my team that will be launched at the Graduate Fashion Shows, as well as taking care of Marketing/PR realization and connections, including research into fashion industry of advertising/PR and creation of magazines with a final report that will be presented on my personal blog as well as creation of professional CV.
