Exploring Interaction Sustainable Design & Eating experience in Conscious Kitchen Den Haag Wenying Chang 4 months (2018)

FOC O

Context

The Haag Open Market A lot of food are thrown away if the food cannot be sold out and then it will become unfresh or rotten.

Conscious Kitchen To against food waste, the volunteers from conscious kitchen pick up bulks of fruits and veggies that would otherwise be thrown away. They then sort, cut and cook the food to create filling, creative and vegan dishes for around 70 people.

Research Observations

There are a lot of packaging of food, including wood, cardboard and plastic.

After cooking, a great amount of foodwaste are left such as peels or removed parts of veggies.

Some people feel bored and do not connect to the vibe of conscious kitchen during waiting.

Ideation, prototype and test

01. Writting down the sustainable activities they did helped them reflect their behaviors. 02. Seeing what others did inspired them to do more sustainable activities. 03. The construction of trees encourge them to do more.

01. They felft excited and challenged to try special painting tool such as rubber band. 02. While cutting down the hexagonal shape, they got unexpected results of image. 03. They liked the fading color 04. It’s bored to wait for drying color.

01. They were curious on the ingredients of color. But it didn’t respond to their curiousity. 02. They didn’t know how to use tools until I show them. 03. Imitation happended while people saw something cool.

Ideation, prototype and test

It didn’t trigger people to talk about sustainability and interest on reusing waste.

It took time to wait for dry color and then cut.

It triggered more interactions on canvas such as play with tool and immitation effect.

Burnout

Burnout especially happens to people who are 20-35 age. All factors come acoss together and form a complexity net of problems.

Burnout is a prolonged response to chronic emotional and interpersonal stressors on the job. Burnout impairs both personal and social functioning. This decline in the quality of work and in both physical and psychological health can be costly—not just for the individual worker, but for everyone affected by that person.

Design Challenge How to break down negative loop and formulate a positive loop?

Negative Loop

Positive Loop

It’s hard to tackle each factor, but one of the most significant factor is inefficient rest. People often browse on social media in a break, or keep thinking works during break. Thus, our design goal is to help people achieve focus, resilience and calm via connecting people to body and mind. How to run a positive loop circularly? Achieve

Ideation, prototype and test EEG sensors Visual stimulus

+ Like hug interaction - Not suitable in public space - Feel like child stuff The interactive hug pillow is hanging in a public space.

Audio stimulus

The pillow detects the heartbeat and responds with same rhythm vibration.

+ Like touch experience - Too much stuff happens together

EEG sensors pick up brain wave

The audio and visual experience were presented by touching different textures.

+ Brain is washed by light experience + Light recalls memory - Hands cannot relax by touching press sensor Go to a spot and have brain reset.

At first the experience can be stressful or tense, but be relaxed in the end..

EEG sensors extract

Reset experience Alpha wave

Relaxtion

Neuroscience literature suggests that alpha waves are associated with selective inhibition - the brain’s ability to filter incoming information and achieve focus. Inducing a state where alpha waves are dominant can help individuals to achieve greater focus in their personal and professional lives.

Phase 01 Entrainment

Phase 02 Reflection

In this concept, raw EEG data is processed to extract people’s most prominent alpha frequency. The frequency is then played back to people in the form of an LED pattern. This is known as entrainment stimulating people’s brain to match the frequency of the pattern, thus increasing the dominance of alpha wave.

The entrainment phase encourages focus and awareness of both body and mind. This is followed by a reflection phase, where light and sound encourage calm meditation, strengthened by the preceding entrainment. These phases combine to produce an experience that builds focus, resilience and mindful practices in everyday life.

User Research

Using Context When Where

The device differs in different contexts. Speeddating will be conducted to get feedback on which context is best suited for this device.

Before Sleep People use the device to reset the mind and body.

Why

After work People lie down on sofa and use the device.

I only know I have time before I don't want to do anything after sleep. It can get stress down, a long working day and I just lie help me sleep well afterwards down on sofa. and start a new day tommorrow.

During the work day The device is used in a private room at working place.

The device is prescribed by medical profession. Doctors can analyze data and users can track personal health.

When I get tired, Ijust go to this private space to take a break. After I get enough energy, I can continue my work.

I can access the analyzed data on phone. It's much more better that expertise can interpret the data. I can have personalized healthcare.

Form of concept The purpose of these concepts is to let people experience the whole body sensation without keeping attention on particular part of body such as head.

- People feel that it looks like a medical device.

+ Very flexible, adaptable and practical - Not aesthetically pleasant

Evaluation Before and After Reset

Refresh

Become better

Less better

Let people draw down how do they feel before and after reset experience.

Before After

In the beginning, users do not like the high frequency part because it last long and users felt uncomfortable/disturbed/annoyed/dizzy.

During reset experience, the experience assisted people to breathe well, relax and calm down, especially the fading light and audio experience.

Some people had eye movements during reset experience, their eyes followed the light motion. That enabled them to focus on the movement and shut down brain.

After reset experience, people felt renew and fresh. Besides, several people felt sleepy and less energetic.

Evaluation Moodboard Let people explain their experience by choosing a representative photo.

In the beginning During / After

In the beginning, users thought that the experience was intense like the light during concert.

During and after the reset, users felt balanced like the stone, relaxed in sunset and calm near lake. Several people thought the technology and experience is futuristic.

Insigts The height and shape of the led cover are important elements, which influence the reflection, light path, diffusion and motion of light.

The previous feelings of people would influence the experience. The negative feelings would become positive and the positive feelings become less positive.

We took circular electricity, interaction, sensual experience and entertainment as developing element. It was impermitive to integrate these four key elements on developing micro playground. The topic of product design workshop was Off the Grid which explored the ways to become independent, handle power supply self-sufficiently and live off the grid as easy, sustainable and smart as possible. It was about sharing the solutions, so that everyone can benefit from our experience.
