In South Africa, the Nelson Mandela Foundation is focusing its 2024 Mandela Day work on its priority social justice areas – early childhood development, food security and just cities. We may not be able to do everything but everyone one of us can do something. Have you given thought to what this something is? For me it’s always the things that I cannot turn a blind eye to, it’s the things that I question why would God allow that kind of suffering, it’s the things I know I don’t need and someone is praying for, for me it’s a simple act of sharing.
At Ingwe, every year we stretch out our hands to a meet a need. As I think back, I recall the sandwich runs to the local government clinics, where people gather from the early hours waiting in long queues, I recall the smiles of those receiving our love notes with loaves of bread, I remember the pots of hot soup and bread and the most delightful recollection is our morning spent at baby homes across Durban.
To extend your hand of generosity is an extension of love. We all know love wins but truthfully the sense of fulfillment and purpose in these 67 minutes fuels the rush of dopamine and leaves us feeling like winners. This feeling can be familiar and longer lasting if we choose to keep our eyes open and ears attentive to the needs around us. It’s in our hands to change the narrative of poverty, to one of unity and empathy. To be driven by compassion means, I see you and I’m going to give you a hand up. Lean in to others and their desperate situation. We may not be able to remove their load but we can make it lighter.
This Mandela day as a team we will be helping to rebuild Tongaat. No matter where you find yourself, share your 67 minutes without reservation and perhaps those life changing moments will challenge you to do what you consider to be your duty to your people and your country, then you can rest in peace.

There’s many times I’ve considered the comrades marathon! My mind lets me believe I can do it until reality hits! The endurance fortified by daily disciplines, uninterrupted training and the choice to show up diligently is for the resolute. True athletes are an example of what discipline versus talent looks like. The hard D word is not optional instead it’s a lifestyle.
Every year we stand on the sidelines cheering these determined, strong willed individuals. Some push through the pain whilst others find the fun and spur each other on. The comrades marathon is a display of strength, mental agility and camaraderie. The linked arms to get over the hills and plateaus with the shouts of supporters cheering the brave is an array of unity.
Our lives story is about endurance, maybe if we all linked arms and cheered each other on, we’d get across the finish line.
